00:03History preserved.
00:04The archaeologists came straight in to start carefully excavating
00:08around the timbers we'd found and you know it turned into a kind of two to three month
00:11sensitive archaeological piece of work. This boat dating
00:15back to 1790 was uncovered by Metro workers at
00:19Barangaroo in 2018. It's all Australian hardwood
00:23and it was all coated in pitch so once that was in the ground as well it
00:27really created a good environment for it to be stable.
00:31The site was littered with the trash and treasure of the
00:35time. We've got glass bottle fragments, we've got lots of decorated
00:39ceramics, we've got bones that were remnants of
00:43things people ate. It was likely used for a new era of trade
00:47in the colony between 1790 and 1830.
00:52Anywhere from Newcastle down to Shoalhaven, some
00:55vessels of this size even went out to Norfolk Island and down to Tasmania.
00:59Careful excavation means the boat
01:01will soon be on display to the public.
01:04Some pieces as soon as you
01:06pick them up they are, bits
01:07are breaking off. Some pieces
01:10are quite stable surprisingly.
01:12Archaeologists and conservators
01:14are still trying to piece together
01:15who built and used this boat.
01:17But it's clear this significant find
01:19will shed more light on Sydney
01:21and Australia's history.
01:23Because there's not many records from the time
01:25so we have to just kind of
01:27put together newspaper reports
01:29writings of the period
01:31from diaries and government records.
01:34We're looking at hopefully
01:35having it reconstructed by about
01:37mid next year.

01:44a delicate puzzle.
