Discover the fine line writers had to walk when creating Verso for 'Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.' A suspicious stranger and a replacement for a fan-favorite, Verso's acceptance by players was a major hurdle, overcome by the 'masterclass' performance of actor Ben Starr.

00:00With Verso it was tricky, right, because on the one hand, from a story perspective, they need to be a
00:07bit suspicious of him, right, and he is by nature of the character, he's morally gray, he's got a lot
00:13of like different things that he can't tell them, right, and at the same time, he's replacing a beloved character,
00:21it's a fine line because you want players to embrace him because now he's part of your team and you
00:25have to fight with him, and also now it's like this stranger just came in, right.
00:30And so what is really magical, Ben just has this charisma, right, he's so charismatic, and he's able to deliver
00:37this very layered nuanced performance where you feel the charisma, where you feel that like, oh, that attractive element where
00:44you want to like him, you want to be his friend, and also you're like, hmm, can I trust him,
00:49I don't know, there's definitely more layers to him, there's things that he's not telling me.
00:53You can feel all those layers, all that complexity, and also you can sense there is a deeper pain underneath
01:00all of that, and I feel like that was just a masterclass in delivering layers and allowing the player to
01:08connect with them so quickly after they feel betrayed by Gustav's death.
01:14So I think Ben definitely did some heavy lifting and helping us get the players over the hurdle of accepting
01:21Verso.
