Believe Me S01E01
Transcript
00:00Young white woman with cropped auburn hair is holding up a young child with light brown skin to the window
00:06of the bus they're on.
00:07It glides past the London Eye.
00:11Bouncing him on her knee tenderly, she smiles.
00:14Amy Fionn Edwards.
00:16Now a man's helping her off the bus with their pram.
00:21Say thank you to the nice man.
00:23Say thank you.
00:25Jordan Bolger, Laurie Kiniston with Daniel Mays.
00:30Believe me.
00:31Now they're strolling through a sunny park as she pushes the boy in the pram.
00:36Here up or here down?
00:38Tonight I'm here.
00:40Can't decide.
00:42Look, I like it up, but I'm worried it makes me look fierce.
00:45She crouches, turning his pram so they're face to face.
00:48What do you think?
00:50Too fierce.
00:53She's tugged the hair back from her face.
00:55So this is where you were born?
00:57Nice enough, wrong dear, but I bet you'd want some fresh air and trees.
01:02Now as I sit there, number 17, do you remember?
01:04Now she's pointed out second and third floor windows on a building on a street, then stopping a few doors
01:10down.
01:10And this is where Daddy still lives.
01:14I can never remember what number he is.
01:1723, eh?
01:196th of May, 2003.
01:2257?
01:23Anyway, he is going to be so excited to see you.
01:28Can we just get together properly?
01:29Meet him?
01:31Hmm?
01:31Have him live with us?
01:33He says he'd like to.
01:34Well, I suppose I do love him, but you argue a lot.
01:39Hmm?
01:40What do you think?
01:42Hmm?
01:42Are you still having something to do with my hair?
01:46So who else is going to that?
01:47Uh, Frankie just had a few friends.
01:49Guys and girls, or?
01:51No, just guys.
01:52Now inside the flat.
01:54Not feeling jealous of you?
01:56No.
01:57Connor, this is my first fucking night out as a mother.
02:00Do you have to swear?
02:00I'm not going to just jump into bed with anyone.
02:02Probably you'd care.
02:04Who says I wouldn't care?
02:08Yeah, well, they wouldn't be interested in me.
02:10Why?
02:10Why wouldn't they be interested in you?
02:13I mean, yes, they're all guys, but they're also all gays.
02:17Now she's dressed up and Connor's still holding their son, Jack,
02:20having given him a bottle of milk.
02:22There's more milk in the fridge if you need it.
02:25But that was formula.
02:27Started him on that now because I'm not producing enough anymore.
02:31She smiles at Jack.
02:33Worked for down.
02:34Bit more me, isn't it?
02:35Yeah.
02:38So, that one earlier, that was your milk?
02:40Yeah, I expressed it earlier today.
02:43You put this thing on your tit and it sucks away at me like I'm a cow on a milking
02:46machine.
02:47But it took ages, didn't it?
02:49Because I pretty much went dry now.
02:51She kisses Connor on the lips.
02:53Should be too late.
02:55Actually, it's hard if I'm going to fall asleep at nine o'clock.
02:58Have you got some money for a cab?
02:59I don't want you messing around with the bus.
03:01Twenty quid in the secret compartment?
03:03Yeah, you got your kid.
03:04She holds them up.
03:06And a black cab, please.
03:08And also, also, also.
03:10You look lovely.
03:11Sarah smiles at Connor, who is biracial with light brown skin, then goes.
03:16Yeah, I want a milking machine.
03:18She's left her phone behind on the table.
03:20Now in a lively club surrounded by her male friends.
03:24Very nice.
03:25The big boy.
03:26Beautiful.
03:36Sarah grimaces as she necks her shot.
03:38Her brown-haired, pale-skinned friend Frankie smiles bashfully as the others begin singing.
03:53Now Frankie and Sarah are at the bar.
03:56Hiya, can I have one vodka and coke and...
03:59No, just a coke, please.
04:00Rowan, two vodka and coke, thank you.
04:02Okay, but I'm not getting battered on my first night at all.
04:04Yes, you are.
04:04Anyway, I've got some magical marching powder for later to keep you awake.
04:08Come on.
04:08You said you were having fun with me tonight.
04:10It's my birthday.
04:11You're having fun with me.
04:12Absolutely fucking not.
04:13You fucking are.
04:14Anyway, right, so.
04:15Dominic.
04:16Who?
04:17I'm making myself all vulnerable.
04:18I'm giving him everything.
04:19I'm giving...
04:20I love you.
04:21I'm giving...
04:21I want to have your babies.
04:22Yeah, what did he say?
04:23He wants to be friends with benefits.
04:24He's an arsehole.
04:26I was devastated, though.
04:27Have I worked without him?
04:28I know, but he's so fit.
04:30Cheers.
04:31Happy birthday.
04:32Happy birthday.
04:33Now she's chatting to friend Finn by the dance floor.
04:36Can we exchange rings?
04:38I even took him to meet my mum and dad.
04:40What happened?
04:41I looked through his phone when he was asleep.
04:42I know.
04:43He's been cheating on me with at least five other guys.
04:46He's an arsehole.
04:47Yeah.
04:49This is my ride.
04:50Frankie's missed you so much.
04:52You're allowed.
04:54Shit.
04:55What?
04:56You have a phone at home.
04:57In the toilets.
04:59And I'll be honest, I broke it off.
05:01He just got too clingy.
05:02Do you think that makes me an arsehole?
05:04No, he is.
05:06I mean, I don't know what for, but I'm going to go with him.
05:08They'll be awesome.
05:09Thank you, honey.
05:10From a cubicle.
05:12Left a line in there.
05:13Oh, thank you.
05:14There you go.
05:15Why did you have to come to the ladies' toilets, I have interest?
05:18Because your toilets are so much nicer than ours.
05:20I'll stink piss.
05:23Right.
05:24Now, are you sure we need to...
05:25No, I already said no, thank you.
05:27Come on.
05:27Don't be a party peeper.
05:28No, I need to.
05:29Don't move the fuck off, will you?
05:31OK, we're not going to let you leave until you do.
05:33I don't like it.
05:34Please, Sarah.
05:35It's my birthday.
05:36I'll be very sad.
05:37Don't ruin his birthday.
05:37You don't look very sad.
05:40Sarah reluctantly takes a dab from Frankie's paper wrap.
05:43Yay!
05:45I've got it.
05:46There.
05:47Now, let me out, please.
05:48I want to spend all night in the bog with you two.
05:49That's our girl.
05:50Now, hazel-eyed Sarah, in her halterneck green top,
05:53is dancing enthusiastically under disco lights,
05:56with Mike, who she and Frankie had been in the loos with,
05:59Finn and Frankie.
06:00Now, she's sitting glumly in a booth,
06:02her handbag that's missing her phone on the table before her.
06:05Frankie, now minus his pink feather boa,
06:07approaches.
06:09There you are.
06:10Hi.
06:10No, I don't want another drink.
06:12I definitely don't want a more coke,
06:13and I'm all out of advice.
06:14They're all arse-polling looking.
06:18I was actually just going to ask you
06:19whether you wanted me to get you a cab.
06:21Yes, it's just me.
06:23Come on, Mama.
06:24Let's go.
06:26Now, Frankie and Mike are talking
06:27to a black cab driver outside the club.
06:30All right.
06:32Is that all right?
06:33Sarah!
06:34He's going to take you.
06:36All right.
06:36Thank you, mate.
06:36She hugs Finn.
06:38I'm safe.
06:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:40Bye-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye.
06:41Frankie kisses her, getting the passenger door.
06:44Thanks, mate.
06:45Love you.
06:45See you later.
06:46Chat in a bit, babe.
06:47Her friends all wave to her
06:49in the back of the black cab
06:51as it heads down the bustling London street.
06:54Now she's dozing as the cab trundles along,
06:57city lights casting orbs of colour across the window.
07:00The driver talks to her.
07:02You're very popular.
07:04She wearily opens her eyes.
07:06Good night.
07:07Certainly look like it.
07:09All them blokes are like bees when honey pot.
07:13It was a friend's birthday party.
07:15They were all over here.
07:17Actually, they were all gay,
07:18so it wasn't quite pretty.
07:19Really?
07:20Look, they don't know what they're missing.
07:22If you don't mind me saying,
07:23I think you look absolutely gorgeous tonight.
07:28I reckon you could probably have turned one on to them
07:30if you wanted to.
07:32Well, I'm not sure about that.
07:34It's just nice to have a night out.
07:37Why's that then?
07:38Just got out of prison or something?
07:39Yeah, not far off.
07:41I've got a nine-month-old baby.
07:43I'm a single mum.
07:44This is the first time I've been out
07:45since he was born.
07:46Sorry, look, before we go any further,
07:48what number Walgate Road was it?
07:50Oh, just, um...
07:51Just take me to number 17.
07:53They'll be fine.
07:5317?
07:55Right.
07:56She watches him appear to write that down in a notebook.
07:59And you live on your own, do you?
08:01Yeah.
08:03Right, yo.
08:05She's given him a nod,
08:06looking vaguely disinterested,
08:08then attempts to doze off again.
08:10So what's that like, then?
08:12You know, spending the night with a load of gay guys.
08:16Oh, they're lovely.
08:17But you do end up just being an agony aunt.
08:20Oh, I bet.
08:22It would have been nice if someone at some point
08:24knows how I was doing.
08:27OK, well, I'll ask.
08:29The driver glances through the rear-view mirror at her.
08:32How are you doing?
08:34Oh.
08:36You know, getting on, I suppose.
08:39But it's hard being on your own.
08:41Why your single mum, then?
08:44Well, it's my choice as much as his.
08:46I want us to be together because we want to be together,
08:48not because we have to be.
08:51Yeah, I get that.
08:53Beads of rain have formed on the windows
08:55as the wipers sweep rhythmically across the windscreen.
08:58Well, I've had a great night tonight.
09:01I had a big win at the casino earlier,
09:03would you believe?
09:04All right, good for you.
09:05Here.
09:06Remember this lot.
09:0940 grand.
09:10Can you believe it?
09:11Oh, wow.
09:11Yeah, I've been wanting to celebrate,
09:13but I've got to finish my shift first, don't I?
09:16Can't drink and drive.
09:17I'll lose my licence and be back to square one.
09:20I was wondering if you'd have a drink for me.
09:23Oh, no.
09:24I'd celebrate for me, like.
09:25No, I...
09:26I've got some champagne here.
09:28No, I've already had to wash your drink tonight.
09:30Raise a glass for me.
09:31I've been stuck here behind this wheel
09:32desperate to wear someone to say cheers.
09:34No, thanks.
09:35Come on.
09:37Do me a favour and have a drink on me.
09:39Why don't you give me a bottle of bubbly at the casino
09:41with me winnings, you know?
09:42At least let me see someone enjoying my good luck.
09:44The lights have changed from red to green
09:46as he offers her a plastic glass full of liquid.
09:52Hey.
09:53Reluctantly easing her belt, she takes it.
09:55All right, girl.
09:57She takes a chaste sip of the drink,
10:00frowning slightly at the contents,
10:01as the cab starts moving again.
10:05So what are you going to do with all that money?
10:08To start with,
10:09your journey home is on me tonight, all right?
10:11Oh, thanks.
10:13Oh, I don't know.
10:14Take some time off.
10:15Go on a holiday.
10:16I'll find someone to go with me.
10:20And will you keep being a cabbie?
10:21Probably.
10:22I like meeting people.
10:24I like talking to them.
10:25The cab grinds to a halt.
10:27Oh, sorry.
10:28I spilt the drink.
10:30No, no.
10:30No problem.
10:32You can knock this one back.
10:34There, go on.
10:35He offers another glass back through the dividing screen.
10:39Oh, come on.
10:40You've got to drink it now.
10:41You're going to give me bad luck.
10:43But go on.
10:44Knock it back.
10:46Looking uncomfortable, she accepts it.
10:49You got it?
10:50She drains the glass and holds it up.
10:54Cheers.
10:55Cheers.
10:58Looking increasingly more like she just wants to be back at the flat and the journey over,
11:03Sarah gives a fatigued sigh with her elbow propped up on the windowpane.
11:07Resting her head against her hand, she once more closes her eyes.
11:13You okay?
11:14Want anything else?
11:16Um, no, nothing, thanks.
11:19Her head gently shakes with the movement of the cab.
11:24Have a drink.
11:26No, thanks.
11:28You smoke?
11:31Trying to give her.
11:33Her eyes are still closed.
11:37Now the cab's headlights pierce the gloom as it drives into what looks like the rear service area of a
11:44building complex.
11:44It has several external air conditioning condenser units and large waste bins.
11:49Sarah rouses woozily as overhead industrial-style lights from a covered walkway blur past her window.
11:56A multi-storey building looms beyond.
11:59What's going on?
12:02Thought we'd stop for a little city break.
12:06Yeah.
12:08The cab now stopped, Sarah groggily leans forward.
12:13Come on.
12:15She reaches for the cigarette poking out of its packet.
12:18Take it.
12:20Thanks, sir.
12:22Where are we?
12:23Barely able to keep her eyes open, Sarah sinks back onto the seat as her head drops to her chest.
12:29The pale-skinned, dark-haired driver gets out and peers through the passenger window.
12:37She lifts her head and opens her eyes as he gets in.
12:41I'll have one with you.
12:44He sits beside her as she struggles to sit up, then unsteadily leans forward, allowing him to light a cigarette.
12:54Inhaling it weakly, she slumps back as he lights his own, rolling her head across the headrest.
13:01Lovely man.
13:04All part of service.
13:06She looks up at him as his face blurs into focus, his hazel eyes hooded by thick brows boring into
13:12her.
13:13Her world flickers as she sinks into sleep.
13:16End of part one.
13:23Sarah rouses on a white-sheeted bed in a hospital ward.
13:26Her brow creased.
13:28She looks pained as she takes in the sun, seeping through the blinds of a window nearby,
13:33a pink balloon hovering at the top of the frame.
13:36Briefly dashing her hand across her brow and eye, she looks round as staff busy themselves about her.
13:44As she sits up with effort in the same clothes she'd been wearing in the cab,
13:49she tugs an IV cannula from her arm and gets out of the bed, looking troubled.
13:54She has bruises over her left shoulder and upper arm.
14:01Making her way unsteadily into the hospital's stark corridor, she has no shoes.
14:07Her socks and boot-cut jeans brushing the dark red floor, which is illuminated by overhead lighting.
14:15Having located a toilet, she goes in and starts unbuttoning her jeans.
14:19She's wearing black tights beneath them, and as she pulls them down, she finds them ripped.
14:25Looking confused, she sits down on the bowl.
14:32She winces slightly, gripping her bare thighs with her fingers, the harsh light accentuating the redness of her bruising.
14:40She goes to wipe herself with some tissue, then draws back her fingers, seeing thick, moist liquid on them.
14:48She leans forward, looking pained, as she lets out a gasp.
14:56She looks down, then her eyes slowly widen with a horrified realisation.
15:07Now she's wandering back into the ward, looking tearful and distressed.
15:12As she paces anxiously, a nurse approaches her.
15:16Oh, are you okay?
15:17Police can help me.
15:19I've left my phone at home, and I need to call my boyfriend.
15:21It's right here.
15:21Just calm down for me.
15:22You seemed a bit drunk when you came in last night, so when you just take a seat, I'll be
15:25with you.
15:25I was drunk.
15:26I wasn't drunk.
15:27The nurse tends to the patient opposite, leaving Sarah looking bewildered.
15:31Now Connor meets her on a bench outside with Jack in the prowl.
15:35Hey.
15:36What's going on?
15:37Where have you been?
15:38He hugs her.
15:40Oh, don't touch me.
15:40I'm dirty.
15:41You're disgusting.
15:41Alex, Alex.
15:43What's going on?
15:44What happened?
15:46I think I was raped last night.
15:48Rape?
15:48What do you mean, think?
15:49But why who?
15:50I was drugged and raped.
15:53Why who?
15:53By the cab driver.
15:54He must have put something in my drink.
15:57Oh, he's got my handbag.
15:58I haven't got my purse or my glasses.
16:00He raped you?
16:01Yeah, but I can't remember any of it because he must have drugged me.
16:04Now in a room inside.
16:06He said he'd won some money at a casino and he wanted to celebrate and then he gave me this
16:11drink.
16:13He said it was champagne but I remember it tasted funny.
16:17I smelt the one glass and then he gave me another and in the end I just drank it to
16:24shut him up.
16:26Toxicology tests will establish if there was anything in the drink.
16:29Can you describe him, please?
16:33She recalls a blurry image of the driver smoking.
16:37It's he was 40 to 50 years old.
16:41A medium build.
16:44His hair was neat at the back.
16:46He looked like he'd just been cut.
16:48A suited woman makes a note.
16:51Can you tell us what he did to you?
16:54Well, no, I can't because I don't remember any of it.
16:58Well, I'm certain he drugged me.
17:02And this morning my vagina felt sore.
17:09And there was what felt like lubricant around it.
17:13And my tights were all torn around my crotch area.
17:17Is there a chance you might have had sex with someone earlier in the night and maybe forgotten about it?
17:21No, definitely not.
17:24A suited man.
17:26No, I can tell you, Sarah, you were brought to a police station last night by a young man who
17:30lives at 17 Walgate Road.
17:33The driver and a young man.
17:34He said number seven ring.
17:38That's where I used to live.
17:39Yeah, but why did you go to 17, though?
17:41Because...
17:42Well, I can never remember what number you were, so I must have said 17 and then I knew you
17:46were a couple of doors down.
17:47So before I was brought to the hospital, he took me to the police station.
17:51Him and the taxi driver.
17:52The taxi driver?
17:54That's the guy that raped her.
17:55Does he have to have his name?
17:57We should do.
17:58Yeah?
17:59We're going to need a urine sample and a mouth swab.
18:02Okay.
18:03Did you bring her a change of clothes?
18:05Yeah.
18:06PC Belitha will be taking you to a specialist rape centre for an examination.
18:10You've not had a bath or shower since last night, have you?
18:14Sitting opposite the man and woman interviewing her, who are both white and brown haired, Sarah shakes her head.
18:24Now she's gripping the side of an examination bed that she's lying on.
18:28She's in a hospital gown with her legs slightly parted, as a grey-haired doctor sitting at the base of
18:34the bed is looking closely between them, wearing clinical gloves.
18:41She has more bruises on her inner thigh and just above her eyebrow.
18:45As the bearded doctor, now on his feet, examines them and the ones on her arm, she flinches.
18:51Could you turn over, please?
18:53I need to accept your back passage.
18:56Your anus.
18:57In case he penetrated you there?
18:59No, I don't know.
19:00If someone had anal sex with me, I'd feel it.
19:02I'm sorry.
19:03I have to.
19:04As tears well up in her eyes, Sarah forlornly obeys, slowly turning on her side so she's facing away from
19:12the doctor.
19:14She tenses her lips and squeezes her eyes shut, her face contorting with quiet agony.
19:20Now with the suited woman, Bolitho, in another room in the hospital.
19:25We'll be arranging what's called an Achieving Best Evidence interview with you, where you come into the station while it's
19:30all fresh in your mind.
19:31Haven't I already done that?
19:33Sorry, but it needs to be done.
19:34And should you wish, we can arrange an appointment for you at the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Clinic.
19:41Yeah, I do wish.
19:42Okay.
19:43There are also victim support services that we can connect you with.
19:48Now, your bag, glasses and purse are not missing.
19:50I've been told they were taken for forensic examination.
19:52Okay, because I need my glasses to read.
19:55Now, is there anything else you want to tell us?
19:58Anything you want to tell us about now, Sarah, that might be relevant?
20:01If you mean, did I have sex with anyone else last night, I've already told you no, I didn't.
20:05But I do want to tell you one thing.
20:09I really regret it, but I did have a little bit of cocaine last night.
20:13Okay.
20:13My friends just kept on at me and I gave in and just had a little dab to shut them
20:18up.
20:18But it was only a tiny amount.
20:19You're better off telling us now rather than us not knowing and finding it in your samples.
20:24I'm so embarrassed.
20:26Now, Belitho and Sarah arrive back at the flat.
20:29Hey.
20:31Can I tell you?
20:32Yeah.
20:32No, I still have another shower.
20:34Mr O'Carroll, would you be able to come back to the station with me now to make a statement?
20:38Why?
20:39We just want to be as thorough as possible.
20:41He can confirm certain timings and details and so on.
20:43Okay, yeah.
20:45That makes sense.
20:47All right, I won't be long.
20:49Her eye makeup smudged, Sarah offers brown-eyed Connor a weak smile as he follows Belitho out.
20:56Now at the station.
20:57She came to London for college, was in digs in the area.
21:01Initially, we were just neighbours.
21:03And what about family?
21:04Did she have family down here with her?
21:07They're all still living in Newport, so she hardly ever sees them.
21:11How would you describe Sarah's alcohol intake?
21:13I mean, she likes to drink, but in a fun way, I'd say it's normal.
21:18Does she binge drink?
21:20Nah, I mean, like I said, she likes to have a laugh on a night out.
21:24And she actually hadn't been on a night out quite a while before that because of the baby.
21:30So, maybe she got drunk quicker.
21:32And what about drugs?
21:35What kind of drugs?
21:36Marijuana.
21:37Cocaine.
21:37No, no, no.
21:38I've never seen her take any kind of drug.
21:41Not cocaine?
21:44No, not that I know of.
21:47Meanwhile, back at the flat, Sarah's emerged from the bathroom in a towel and checks herself in a mirror.
21:53We have to ask this, Connor.
21:55Would you say that Sarah's a sexually promiscuous person?
22:00No, I wouldn't say promiscuous.
22:03But what do you mean?
22:05Again, we have to ask, is she the type of person who, for example, might meet up with someone on
22:10a night out and have sex with them?
22:11Sarah's looking at her bruises.
22:15I don't know.
22:17I made me feel bad about that afterwards.
22:19I don't know.
22:20Um, no, no, no, no, no, um, no, she's in a relationship.
22:26Now, he arrives back to his living room where Sarah's sitting in a dressing gown.
22:31How are you feeling?
22:33If he drove me to the station in a taxi, then they must have his name.
22:36Or his badge number, or his license number.
22:39I mean, yeah, I suppose so.
22:41Yeah, they must do.
22:43They should be going around his house now and arresting him.
22:46He gives her an uncertain smile.
22:50I'm going to get a beer.
22:51Do you, um, do you want something?
22:52Uh, glass of wine.
22:55Connor, who has a toned physique, no hair on his head and a goatee beard and moustache,
23:00fishes a beer from the kitchen fridge, then a bottle from nearby.
23:05It's a bit odd though, ain't it?
23:08You know, if he raped you, they'd then take you to a police station.
23:15What do you mean, if?
23:17No, I don't mean anything like that.
23:19It's just a figure of speech.
23:22He hands her a red wine as she stares up at him.
23:26What did the police ask you?
23:28Just general stuff, really, about last night.
23:32Times and stuff.
23:33He watches her as she knocks back her wine.
23:40You see, when you're feeding Jack,
23:42it doesn't matter if you've been drinking alcohol.
23:46A little bit, doesn't matter.
23:49Connor nods, taking a swig of his beer.
23:53Anyway, I pretty much stopped feeding him now.
23:55Yeah.
23:59Why'd you just ask me that?
24:00Just one gin.
24:01Just rape, for fuck's sake!
24:03No, no, no, I'm sorry.
24:04I'm all over the fucking place!
24:05I just...
24:06He's followed her into the kitchen.
24:08I'm sorry.
24:09I'm sorry.
24:09Good morning.
24:10He hugs her.
24:12The taxi driver drove to the station.
24:15They must be able to find out who he is.
24:19End of part two.
24:26The urine sample, we test for chlamydia and gonorrhea.
24:30And with the blood sample, we can check for syphilis, hepatitis B or C and HIV.
24:36HIV?
24:37HIV?
24:38You can fucking die from that.
24:40If necessary, we can provide you with PEP, which is a medication that can help prevent HIV infection if commenced
24:48soon after exposure.
24:51The nurse will also be providing you with emergency contraception and morning after pill.
24:58Sarah is sitting opposite the doctor, who's talking to her in a consultation room at the hospital.
25:03Now at the flat, she's on the phone.
25:06Hello?
25:07Oh, hello.
25:07Is this PC Belitho?
25:09Yes, that's me.
25:11Hi, yeah.
25:12This is Sarah Adams.
25:13Hello, Sarah.
25:14How are you feeling this morning?
25:15Yeah, I just wanted to ask if you managed to trace the black cab driver that dropped me at the
25:19police station.
25:20I actually don't have that information, but in any case, I'm actually not handling this investigation.
25:25It's been passed on to my colleague, D.C. Stevens, and he'll be in touch with you in due course.
25:31Right, but this man's still out there.
25:33I just want to know that he's been arrested.
25:36D.C. Stevens is the man to ask.
25:39Now Sarah's outside a building a few doors down with Jack in his pram.
25:43The young man the driver was speaking to emerges.
25:47Hello.
25:47Hi.
25:48I was looking for a guy who helped me the other night.
25:50I was in a bit of a state.
25:52Oh, don't mind me knocking on your door like this.
25:53No, no, it's fine.
25:54Yeah, that was me.
25:56You look a bit different in the arts, what you did there.
25:58Oh, God, I can only imagine.
26:00Have you got a couple of minutes to talk about it?
26:03Now inside, they're provided hot drinks by a young woman.
26:06There you go.
26:06Thanks, Pete.
26:08Okay.
26:09She leaves them to it.
26:11It's so funny.
26:12I used to live here.
26:13Really?
26:14So you're all students, Sharon?
26:16Yeah.
26:17And you've got the short straw when you open the door?
26:20I thought someone was trying to break in.
26:23In a flashback, the young man, Billy, is heading downstairs where the driver's at the door.
26:28What are you doing, man?
26:29There's a girl with my taxi who lives here.
26:32She says this is her front door key.
26:34No, look.
26:35But she said number 17.
26:38No, she don't live here.
26:40Billy sees Sarah on the floor of the back of the cab by what looks like a puddle of vomit.
26:45She was like that when I picked her up.
26:47A roaring drug.
26:49You need to go to the police station now.
26:54I could see it was more than just drink.
26:56So I immediately wondered if you were drugged.
26:59I was.
27:00By him, I'm sure of it.
27:02Brown-eyed Billy leans back in his chair.
27:05I'm pretty sure he assaulted me on the way home.
27:09Fuck.
27:10I can sense something was not right about him.
27:13Listen, the woman's outside there in his taxi.
27:14She's basically unconscious.
27:16Let's have it right.
27:17She's thrown up all over the back of my cab.
27:19I can't pick up any more jobs till I get it cleaned up.
27:22A flashback of Sarah being helped by officers into the station as Billy watches,
27:27then turns seeing the driver head off in his cab.
27:31I didn't see them take his name.
27:34They didn't even get my name.
27:35What?
27:36When they got you inside, hung around for a bit.
27:39She's not drunk, OK?
27:40You can tell by looking at her, she's been drugged.
27:43So why aren't you checking out the cab driver?
27:45There's no way a cab would pick someone up in that state.
27:47Something's not right.
27:48An ambulance has been called.
27:49We'll take you from here.
27:50They weren't interested in anything I had to say.
27:53Eventually, the ambulance turns up and he asks me to go home.
27:57I think they thought that you were off your head on drink or you were a junkie.
28:01I've got to go and look at him.
28:03If you showed me a picture, I'd be able to identify him.
28:07Thank you so much for helping me.
28:10Is it OK if I give the police your name?
28:12Of course.
28:13Anything I can do to help.
28:14OK.
28:16Now on the phone as she's crouched by Jack in a park.
28:20Hello, can I help?
28:21Yeah, DC Paul Stevens, please.
28:24This is Sarah Adams.
28:25He's investigating my case.
28:26He's not available right now.
28:27OK, well, I have some information that might be helpful.
28:30So if someone could call me back as soon as possible, please.
28:32Righto, we've got your number.
28:33Someone will be in touch.
28:37They won't.
28:39I know they won't.
28:41She's hung up and now talking to Jack on the bandstand of the leafy sun-dappled park.
28:4712th of May, 2003.
28:49It's daytime and Sarah's coming down the main staircase of the flat to answer the door to a man and
28:54woman, both white and smartly dressed, waiting outside.
28:58Mrs. Stevens, this is DC King.
29:00I've been trying to speak to someone for a couple of days.
29:02Yeah, sorry.
29:03Things have been extremely busy.
29:05Now in a car.
29:06Did anyone get the taxi driver's name when he took me to the police station?
29:10There's this guy at number 17, Billy, who helped me on the night it happened.
29:14Billy says that he thinks that you didn't, but I'm hoping that you did, or you have something on CCTV.
29:19I don't know, I'm afraid, but we can certainly look into that.
29:22Well, there must be something.
29:23All right, well, you leave that with us.
29:26If you take a left out of the lights, we can avoid the road.
29:29Sarah spots the multi-storey building.
29:32Oh my God, that's it.
29:34It was round the back of the flat to the road he took me down.
29:37Well, we should go down there.
29:38All right, we'll make a note and we'll send someone down.
29:42Yeah, there might be DNA there or something.
29:44I can tell you exactly where he parked.
29:46Okay, okay, we'll look into it.
29:48Sitting in the back of the car as DC King drives, Sarah shifts restlessly.
29:53Oh, I went to a GP and he made a note of all the bruises they've got all over my
29:57body.
29:57Though you might want to take some photos of them.
30:00Well, they could have been caused at the hospital, of course, as you were unconscious when they were moving you.
30:04But about today, it's called Achieving Best Evidence Interview.
30:07Yeah, they told me what it was.
30:09Right, well, there'll be other officers doing the interview, but if you like, I can give you a heads up
30:13on what to expect when they question you.
30:14Oh, yeah, okay, thanks.
30:16Now being interviewed on camera.
30:19Had you already had a lot to drink that night?
30:22I had a few drinks, yes, but I wouldn't say that I was drunk when I got in the cab.
30:28You had some cocaine too?
30:33Yes, like I say, I was pressured into it by my friends and I regret it.
30:39She's in a room with Stevens and another man, PC Wright, who's asking the questions.
30:44You drank the champagne that he offered you?
30:48Yes, it tasted sort of funny.
30:53Sort of bitter, but after that it's fragments.
30:57Where did you wake up?
31:01In the hospital.
31:03I went to the toilet and I could see that my tights were torn around the crotch.
31:08I had lubricant around my vagina and on my thighs and my vagina felt sore.
31:16Why do you think you were raped?
31:20Because of how my vagina felt.
31:22Now consulting with King and Stevens in another interview room.
31:26I've never seen a rape victim behave like that before.
31:28She's not crying, there's no emotion.
31:30Was she like that when you picked her up?
31:31Then back to Sarah.
31:34Okay.
31:35They're happy we haven't missed anything.
31:38How do you think it went?
31:40Well, if I'm honest, it was unusual.
31:44What do you mean?
31:45Most women in your situation, they get angry.
31:48They get upset.
31:50I was told not to show any emotion.
31:52There's no right or wrong.
31:53It's just what it is.
31:55That's how you reacted?
31:57He said you wanted facts, not tears.
31:59That's what he said to me, his exact words.
32:02I wouldn't worry about it.
32:03It's done now.
32:04I'll organise a lift for you.
32:07No, thank you.
32:08I'll find my own way home.
32:11Now, over dinner at the flat,
32:13Connor watches Sarah take a swig of her red wine.
32:16Then she briefly leaves the table to grab her handbag.
32:19How are you feeling now?
32:22Shit.
32:24Presenting a packet of cigarettes,
32:26she removes one, readying a lighter.
32:31Probably shouldn't be smoking.
32:32Fuck off!
32:34Sarah's gone down.
32:36She runs her hand over her face, looking flustered.
32:43I do want to ask you something.
32:46Tensing her lips, she turns to him.
32:52How come you stayed out so late that night?
32:56I don't know.
32:58It's just how the night went.
33:00You could have texted me.
33:01I was worried about it.
33:01Because I left my phone at home.
33:03What is this, Connor?
33:04I'm just, I'm trying to understand what happened.
33:08She stares at him, open-mouthed,
33:10her eyes betraying a look of hurt and disbelief.
33:13Their meal turned sour.
33:14They sit awkwardly at the dinner table.
33:16End of part three.
33:23Sarah's trudging down a street lined with boarded up or graffitied buildings.
33:27Taxi!
33:29Looking slightly shaken by a young woman hailing a black cab nearby,
33:33she quickens her pace as she walks past it, pulling up.
33:36She remembers the hazy image of the driver peering through her passenger window.
33:41Then she spots something, staring up at it.
33:48She's in the rear service area where the driver had taken them, now under a blue sky.
33:54She surveys her surroundings with a frown,
33:56taking in the bins, the air conditioning units,
33:59and the heavy concrete elevated walkways with metal railings.
34:07She goes to light a cigarette,
34:09then recoils slightly at the memory of the driver lighting her cigarette in the cab.
34:19Lovely man.
34:21She removes the unlit cigarette from her mouth, looking troubled.
34:26Now with Connor at the flat.
34:29Maybe they can show me pictures of all the black cab drivers in London.
34:32Babe, there's thousands of them.
34:33I don't care, I'm sure I'd recognise him.
34:36On my jeans, when I dropped the drink that he gave me,
34:39there'll be some of that on them.
34:40On my top, they were sick on it,
34:41so if they test that, they can find a way to drug me with.
34:43I think we just need to leave it to the police now.
34:45They're going to know the best way to go about things.
34:47Yeah, they don't seem to have much urgency about them.
34:49Well, I mean, is there any chance you've got things mixed up in your head because you...
34:55What?
34:57Because of what?
34:59Because you took coke.
35:02How do you know I took coke?
35:04I just put two and two together.
35:06I mean, the police didn't say it in that many words,
35:08but I just assumed from how they spoke...
35:10Fucking bastards!
35:11I can't believe they talked to you about that!
35:12It was just a little bit because Frankie had fucking on and on at me!
35:15Look, I told them I've never seen you do coke.
35:17That was private information!
35:18Well, hang on.
35:19Jack's my son too.
35:22Meaning what?
35:22You're breastfeeding, so...
35:24Why would you do coke?
35:25Because I'm a shit mum, obviously.
35:27I'm not saying that.
35:27Look, I told you, I pretty much stopped breastfeeding, but okay, I shouldn't have had any.
35:31I don't know why I did.
35:32I fucking hate myself.
35:33I'm a shit mum!
35:34No, that's not what I'm saying.
35:35I'm just saying, maybe that made you go a little bit weird.
35:41Do you know what made me go weird?
35:44Test and see if I had HIV.
35:46Or fucking syphilis.
35:48Or worrying if I'm fucking pregnant.
35:51Wait, and what are you?
35:54I mean, he gave me something.
35:56She looks at him miserably.
35:59All the tests were negative.
36:02That's good.
36:03Yeah, I could say that.
36:04No, I mean, I mean like...
36:06Because there may be...
36:08And I'm only saying maybe, but maybe that means that you weren't assaulted by it.
36:12But I was.
36:13Yeah, but I just keep thinking, if he did do something, why would he drive you to a police station?
36:17Stop fucking saying if!
36:19Now she's standing outside the flat with Jack and Connor.
36:22Please, Sarah, look, just stay a couple more nights until it calms down a bit.
36:26It's not going to calm down in a couple of nights.
36:28Sarah.
36:30It's daytime, and she storms off down the street, pushing Jack in his pram, as Connor watches helplessly.
36:37Sarah.
36:39Now she's hanging washing up on a line in a garden bathed in sunshine.
36:43She looks utterly deflated and tearful.
36:47Jack's in his pram nearby.
36:53Sorry, love.
36:56Got to be quiet, haven't I?
36:58She goes over to him.
37:00She's got lots of my mind.
37:02Grown-up stuff.
37:05Sorry I'm such a misery.
37:08I tell you what.
37:10How about this?
37:11Ready?
37:12She does a forward roll over a blanket on the grass.
37:15Sarah.
37:16How's that?
37:18Okay, what about this?
37:20Then she does a cartwheel.
37:23Sarah.
37:24Is that better?
37:25Yes.
37:27More?
37:28Okay.
37:29She's about to launch into another cartwheel.
37:34Who's that?
37:36That doesn't count, by the way.
37:39Leaving brown-eyed Jack in his pram outside, Sarah heads to the door.
37:44She opens it, spying an awkward-looking Frankie waiting there.
37:48He smiles sympathetically, then pulls her in for a hug.
37:54She closes her eyes, looking emotional, as he holds her.
37:58Now in the garden with Jack.
37:59You know, they told me they did have the taxi driver's name.
38:03And then they said he gave them a false name and address.
38:05And they finally told me last week that nobody took his details at the station that night.
38:11I can't believe how crap they are.
38:13Well, I'd recognise him.
38:15And Mike would.
38:16We had a big chat with him before you got in.
38:18We were paying him.
38:19Paying him?
38:20Yeah, I gave him 20 quid.
38:23What?
38:25He told me he was taking me home for free because he'd won some money that night.
38:28He'd even lied about that.
38:31Surely there must be some CCTV of his cab from the police station.
38:35That's why I keep asking, but they just don't seem interested.
38:38Whereas they've mentioned about 50 times what they've been called Keane in my system.
38:43I'm so sorry about that. I'm such a twat.
38:45It's my fault.
38:47I should have said no one's stuck to it.
38:50Yeah, DC Stevens.
38:51It's Sarah Adams.
38:52Hi.
38:53Yeah, I do need to talk to you quickly.
38:54I was with my friend Francis Peacock, who was with me the night it happened.
38:57And him and another friend, Mike Rafter, spoke to the taxi driver.
39:00And Francis Frankie says that they would both be able to identify him.
39:04Look, Sarah, you've got to let us do our job.
39:06I know it's frustrating, but we are doing everything we can.
39:09Did you talk to Billy Houghton, the young guy that lives at 17 Wargate Road, who also got a good
39:12look at him?
39:13I'm sure we will get to all of them in due course, but for the time being...
39:15Will you? Because it just feels like you've lost interest in everything.
39:19I can assure you that's not the case.
39:21It just feels like you don't believe me.
39:24I'm really sorry that it feels like that.
39:27Hi. Yeah, it's Francis Peacock, the guy she just mentioned.
39:30I'm more than happy to come in and talk with you about the conversation I had with the taxi driver.
39:34But what's the fucking point?
39:36Right. Yeah, I'm going to have to go because she's really upset.
39:42What's the point?
39:44Sitting with Frankie on a riverbank scattered with autumnal leaves, she rests her head on his shoulder as he comforts
39:50her.
39:513rd of June, 2003.
39:53At the station.
39:54All right, Spencer, what have we got?
39:56No DNA from her swabs and nothing on her clothing.
39:58It's not unusual, it just means he probably wore a condom.
40:01Toxicology?
40:02Trace cocaine, blood alcohol, 260 over 100, which is pretty high.
40:07Any other drugs, sedatives, anything we've seen before in cases of date, right?
40:11That all came back negative.
40:12I mean, we did find citalopram, which is actually an antidepressant,
40:15and a little bit of codeine and morphine,
40:17but all the levels you'd expect from over-the-counter medications.
40:20Right.
40:22Thanks, mate.
40:243rd of September, 2003.
40:27Sarah's sitting alone on a bench in the dim light of day, looking thoughtful.
40:31She hears her phone buzzing.
40:36Hello?
40:36Hello, it's DC Paul Stevens.
40:38Yeah, hello.
40:39Sorry for the delay in calling you, it's been very busy.
40:41Right, so, the first thing to say is that all avenues were explored.
40:47But did you speak to Billy Houghton and Frankie Peacock and my grafter?
40:51Well, I did visit the nightclub you attended, and I established that the area outside is covered by CCTV,
40:57but when I reviewed it from the camera angle, it wasn't possible to identify the cab picking you up.
41:02Right, what about when it dropped me off the police station?
41:05Uh, the forensic samples taken from you came up negative except for the presence of alcohol and cocaine,
41:11and the medical examination conducted upon you found no evidence to cooperate your assertion that you were sexually assaulted or
41:18raped.
41:19Therefore, in light of all of this, I do have to tell you that our investigation is being closed down.
41:26You know, it feels like you're calling me a liar.
41:28Like, what about the bruises on me? I asked her to come in so you could take proper pictures of
41:31them.
41:32I believe something may have happened to you that night, but I do not believe that you were right.
41:36Is it possible you had sex with one of the men you were out with?
41:39They were all gay.
41:41You must bear in mind that you were over the drink drive limit, and this will affect your recollection of
41:45events.
41:47You didn't even find out where he was, did you?
41:49I can tell you that the details of your case will be kept on file at central office.
41:53If you would like to come and collect your clothing and positions, I can arrange for somebody to hand them
41:57over to you.
41:58No.
41:59No?
41:59No.
42:01You're going to need to hang on to them, because one day you're going to need them as evidence when
42:04you realise you were wrong about me.
42:07She slams her flip phone shut and rests her chin defeatedly on her hand before shaking her head incredulously.
42:16Still perched on the bench in the leafy park where she's been with Jack, she looks close to tears.
42:27Daylight seeps in through a kitchen window above a sink, where a tall man is hunched over a black laminate
42:33worktop nearby.
42:35Packets of various pharmaceutical drugs are by a blue plastic bag full of bottles, and he's crushing up pills in
42:42an ashtray using a metal spoon.
42:47Having mixed them together, he scoops out the powder onto the worktop.
42:53Now it's night time, and scenes of revelers, some a little worse for wear, drift past a blurry car window.
43:00Colourful neon lights illuminate the street.
43:02The driver's in his black cab.
43:05DC Stevens' voice echoes.
43:08If a licensed black cab driver is involved in sexual attacks on women, then this represents a real risk to
43:14the community.
43:15However, the facts of the case do not support this.
43:18The actions of the cab driver, witnessed by police, appear to be those of a responsible, law-abiding individual.
43:25In addition, the woman's loss of consciousness is consistent with the alcohol and cocaine she consumed, given her recent absence.
43:33The risk is therefore low.
43:36Now a young white woman with long curly copper hair is in the driver's cab.
43:41Good night.
43:43She looks up from her phone.
43:45You look like you've enjoyed yourself.
43:47Oh yeah, it was just to catch up with friends.
43:51Male or female?
43:52Female.
43:53I was going to say, if it was a fella.
43:54What a lucky guy he is.
43:56The blue bag full of bottles is by his feet.
44:00I've had a great night tonight meself.
44:03Male.
