00:00Hello Backpackers, I'm Tyler West and welcome to Race Across the World, The Detour.
00:04The show that's got us all perfecting those makeup tutorials.
00:07You look like a Victorian school child.
00:09I look like a chimney sweep.
00:12Taking in the stunning views.
00:13I can't see you over the car.
00:16And writing our dating app profiles.
00:18Young, single, available, full of dumplings.
00:20What more could you want?
00:23Yes, it's the show where you'll hear the latest chat on Series 6 of Race Across the World,
00:27plus some travel tales, fails and tips from our special guests.
00:31And at the end, we have an exclusive from the next episode of Race.
00:35We are so excited for that.
00:36It's almost going to be as exhilarating as hitting the dance floor at a Mongolian disco, right?
00:41Once that's all over, there's still more for you to enjoy.
00:44Just search The Detour on BBC Sounds to hear our bonus show, Travel Buddies.
00:48So put your dancing shoes on, clear your singing throat and join us for Race Across the World, The Detour.
00:57Now, I can't wait to meet our guests.
00:59So who has signed the book this week?
01:02It's none other than presenters and co-hosts of the Jack and Ash podcast, Jack Remington and Ash Holm.
01:08And from Race Across the World, Series 4, we've got Betty in the studio.
01:14Now, I think it's time to say hello again to our resident travel expert.
01:17He might have been born on the wrong side of the millennium,
01:19but he can get you to the Big Apple and back in a day.
01:22It's Alfie Watts.
01:25Come on, bro. You've got a fresh trim as well.
01:26I do. It's from Peru this time.
01:29I don't really have a barber. I just...
01:31You're going to Peru.
01:33I wouldn't say that was my commute, but I was there and it was eight quid.
01:37It actually looks decent.
01:38I'm quite happy with it.
01:40And towards the end of this episode, I'll be revealing my optimal route for this leg of the race.
01:44It'll be nice and quick, but we'll also have a few stops for some eye-popping detours.
01:47Wicked. Now, before I go any further,
01:49if you're still in Olgi and you haven't yet made it to Ha-Horin, then stop.
01:53Go and watch the seventh leg of Race Across the World Series 6 an eye player
01:56and then just come straight back here.
01:57Now, what a leg that was.
01:59It challenged our racers in ways that they'd never been challenged before.
02:04Ash, Mark and Margot, I'm devastated for them.
02:07Yeah, me too.
02:08Absolutely devastated.
02:09I think, like, now we're just hoping that they get to the finish line.
02:12Yeah, it feels like... I love them too, first of all.
02:15And I think the fact that the common bond that joins them both is their loved one that's passed
02:20and it's brought them on this journey together.
02:22Yeah. And I kind of love their attitude towards everything.
02:24It's like, whatever happens, we just need to make it to the finish line,
02:28which I think this is why this episode we're, like, on our hands.
02:32We're like, wait, they might not actually make it to the finish line.
02:35I think Margot's got one more party left in her.
02:36When she just got on the train and was just like, everyone, let's just wire out.
02:40Like, she is brilliant. And poor Mark just goes, she's full of energy, Margot.
02:45Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. For real. For real.
02:47Like, it's so great.
02:48Right, let's talk about Katie and Harrison now.
02:50Because, Betty, I think more than ever in this leg,
02:52they were just kind of, like, enjoying themselves and really sort of embracing the race.
02:56But then the travel aspect was really hard for them, right?
02:59Yeah.
02:59I think Harrison said they've been Mongolia-ed.
03:01That's it.
03:01Yeah, I love that. And do you know what?
03:04Mongolia seems, like, so hard for transport.
03:06There's nothing there.
03:07No. I mean, bless the couples when the vehicles broke down.
03:12Like, there's literally nothing else they can do.
03:14No.
03:14But yeah, Katie and Harrison, I love their bond.
03:17And I mean, I can totally relate doing it with my brother.
03:19With your sibling.
03:20Yeah. So, I just absolutely love watching them on the screen.
03:24Yeah. Andrew and Molly, they're now in second place.
03:26They've had a wicked race this leg,
03:29but talk us through their tactics and choices.
03:31Like, they chose to spend big going on taxis, didn't they?
03:34Yeah.
03:34I feel like it always...
03:37You learn a lot watching it because you think, as a viewer,
03:41that what you would do is the right situation.
03:43You know, it's the same when you watch a lot of different shows
03:44and you're like, well, I've done that better.
03:46I know that I would.
03:46And then, actually, I'm like,
03:47no, maybe the best thing in certain situations is
03:49you say before you want to start or, you know.
03:52And also, I mean, it's when you're on a budget.
03:53I mean, say, for example, you're on a night out
03:54and you're like, oh, we need to get over to point A.
03:57And we're like, I'm just going to get a cab.
03:59It's not just that easy to roll off the tongue
04:01when you're on a very limited budget.
04:02You just see that percentage going down and down and down
04:04of what they've got left.
04:05No, I'd be trying to book Ubers in Mongolia.
04:09I'd be the opposite.
04:10I'd be like, get on my back.
04:11We're fine.
04:11We're going to walk this one and save loads of money
04:13for 120 kilometers.
04:14I think the issue is as well, though,
04:15you don't see your budget going down.
04:17You've got a little notebook
04:18and you're just hoping for the best
04:19that you have actually budgeted.
04:21It's so helpful when you see the percentage go down.
04:24But I was like, they're not seeing that.
04:25They're not seeing that.
04:26They're not seeing that.
04:27You've got to do, obviously,
04:27the currency calculations in your head.
04:29Yeah, that's what I was going to say.
04:30So if you did the numbers wrong,
04:31you did the numbers wrong.
04:31And that's that.
04:32The one thing that also gets me
04:33is that every single taxi driver over there
04:35had so much vim and confidence
04:37to drive a Prius into the desert.
04:39And it wasn't going to break down.
04:41It wasn't this episode where they were like,
04:42at one point, we were airborne.
04:45I'm like, check your tires.
04:47No wonder why you're breaking down.
04:49I mean, that's a big thing, though, going off-roading.
04:51Yeah, I mean, this is just Mongolia.
04:53This is just what the country is.
04:54I mean, it's enormous.
04:56As we've seen,
04:57it's not like hitchhiking in other countries.
04:59Like, these guys expect money.
05:00And the level of money is quite an expensive country.
05:04Yeah, for real.
05:05I mean, two people that did have a touch
05:07throughout this episode were Joe and Kush.
05:09Obviously, they've held on to their position
05:11at the top of the leaderboard.
05:12Ash, after some wobbles that they've had, like,
05:14early on in the race,
05:15I feel like, on this one,
05:17Kush's confidence is at an all-time high.
05:19He's living his best life.
05:21We even then got to that remote Mongolian party
05:24where then it turned out
05:25that the Mongolian throat song
05:26was Kush's favourite song.
05:27Who would have known?
05:28With his dad as well.
05:30With his dad, yeah.
05:32I love those boys so much.
05:35Like, give them both a crown and knight them.
05:38I just think they are.
05:40And they're like,
05:41their dynamic together is so great to watch as well
05:45because Kush has mentioned loads of times
05:47that he gets really anxious,
05:48you know, when he was up all night,
05:50but then Joe will stay up with him.
05:52They are just so wise beyond their years
05:55and, like, watching them grow together is so,
05:57it's actually joyous.
05:59Like, I've really enjoyed watching them.
06:00Makes you want to text your mates
06:01and say thank you for being my friend.
06:02Yeah.
06:02I always am just flabbergasted at how young they are as well
06:05because, like, the way that they interact with each other,
06:06I'm like, it feels like they're quips between each other.
06:09They've got the life experience of 40-year-olds
06:11and then you're like, no, they're actually just young lads
06:13who are smashing it.
06:14Yeah.
06:15But, I mean, Alfie, in Mongolia,
06:17it was hard when it came to travel, right?
06:19Yeah, and it's like you said about going off road,
06:21that is basically their only option is to get between towns
06:24because there are very, very few paved roads in Mongolia.
06:28Every car is a taxi, if you're polite enough, basically,
06:31because the hospitality is deeply ingrained in Mongolian culture.
06:34At this time of year, it can get down to minus 20 at night
06:37in some places, so they are so used to welcoming...
06:39So they just need people coming over for body heat?
06:41Yeah.
06:43And they just love the stories,
06:45but ultimately, you know, these are huge distances,
06:47so if you do hitchhike, then it will cost,
06:49unlike in other countries because gas stations are sparse
06:52and, as we've seen, breakdowns happen.
06:54Yeah.
06:55This is what the country is, which is what makes it so amazing.
06:58I don't know, I think that's the only exception, though,
06:59because if my pals were, like, dropping me to the station
07:01and then they said, yeah, can you give me a fiver for petrol money,
07:03I'd be like, that's a bit tight, come on.
07:05Yeah, but what if they had to, like, ground hop over...
07:08Yeah, then that's a bit crazy, it's a bit different.
07:10Yeah.
07:10You're airborne, Tana, come on.
07:11You're ready to fly, you know.
07:13And also, it's like a three-hour journey to the club
07:15rather than, like, five minutes.
07:17It's just like, I think it's fair you give me petrol money,
07:19I've just driven you for half a day to bring you to our little dance.
07:22Believe how many people are willing to be like,
07:24I'll take you, it's two hours.
07:26Yeah.
07:26Fat chance, I'd never...
07:27I wouldn't do that for you, Jack.
07:29I'd never do it.
07:29That's mental.
07:30I'd never do it.
07:31Betty, how would you say that you and James
07:33would have approached this leg?
07:35Bearing in mind that maps are very unreliable.
07:37James would have hated this leg so much.
07:40Like, he, you know, in our route when we got to...
07:44Book-a-tingi.
07:45Book-a-tingi, yeah, but what was...
07:48Why did you know everything?
07:49Because there's this running joke from our series
07:51and you were staring me in the eye
07:52where Book-a-tingi was like,
07:54where the hell is that?
07:55Book-a-tingi.
07:56Book-a-tingi is so funny.
07:57If you forget to book a taxi...
07:59Did you Book-a-tingi or not?
08:03Book-a-tingi, sorry.
08:04But James hated it.
08:06There wasn't, like, toilet roll.
08:07He missed carpets on his feet.
08:09Like, so Mongolia for him would have been a nightmare.
08:11Yeah.
08:12The travel, stressful.
08:14Like, you've only literally got this map that by leg seven,
08:17it is falling to bits.
08:18Yeah, it's planted.
08:19You know, they've been through all weather and whatever
08:21and then you can't even follow it anyway.
08:23Like, he would have really struggled.
08:24I think I would have enjoyed it.
08:26Yeah, just embracing the most...
08:27I wouldn't mind milking a cow, you know?
08:28You're a bit of the free spirit, yeah.
08:29Milking a cow.
08:30Just because we lost.
08:31Milking a cow, you know?
08:32Now, let's unpack the route from tonight's episode.
08:34The seventh leg saw our racers travel to Hohoran in Mongolia.
08:39Teams could head north via the city of Wulangong
08:42to pick up the paved road east
08:46or go south,
08:48following an established route skirting the Gobi Desert.
08:53Whichever path they choose,
08:55parts of the journey will take them off-road
08:57across unmapped trails
08:59and landscapes few tourists travel.
09:03Alfie, my bro, give us the knowledge.
09:05One of the most impressive legs of race across the world probably ever,
09:09going into Mongolia,
09:10which is an enormous country.
09:12It's six times the size of the UK in area.
09:15Crazy.
09:15But the UK has a population of 20 times more than Mongolia.
09:20We're a bit claustrophobic over here.
09:22So you think about how sparse it populated.
09:24It's got a population of three and a half million,
09:26half of which just live in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar.
09:28And we got to see it from the comfort of our own sofa.
09:30And we did.
09:31I mean, Betty, Andrew and Molly,
09:32they were in a great place at the start of this leg.
09:36They had a big sort of budget where they could splash the cash.
09:38And Andrew said he was like,
09:40there's no point being a rich loser, right?
09:41And just started splashing it.
09:42Is that a good mentality?
09:43Do you know what?
09:44I think so.
09:45Because, like, they have sacrificed in other legs.
09:49And when better to spend your cash than in the last two.
09:52Just, I mean, I suppose it's that thing of like,
09:55you've still got one more leg to go and it's the most important leg.
09:58But I think so far so good,
09:59they've definitely got the right tactic.
10:01How much money did you finish on?
10:03£1.40.
10:04£1.40.
10:05This question actually,
10:06is that good budgeting or bad budgeting?
10:08I think that's the best.
10:09I think it's good.
10:10It's the best budget.
10:10I think it was as close to zero as possible.
10:12That was perfect.
10:13Exactly.
10:13Yeah.
10:14I could have had a pack of cookies on that boat over
10:16and still made it, I reckon.
10:18Do you know what?
10:19Exactly.
10:20That's the only regret of the whole show.
10:21Yeah.
10:22That would have been so good if you had literally had zero left
10:24and just been eating the rest of my foot.
10:26And she caught over the finish line.
10:28That's amazing.
10:29You with a pecorret.
10:29Yeah.
10:30Exactly.
10:31Alfie, do you think that Mark and Margot can survive the rest of the race
10:36with less than, what, they only had like around 12% of their budget left?
10:39Look, if there's someone who can talk her way to the finish line,
10:43it's going to be Margot.
10:44Yeah.
10:45100%.
10:46So they just want to get there now.
10:48I really hope they do because it will be such a rewarding thing.
10:51And you know, when you get so close.
10:53Yeah, of course.
10:54So I think they will get there, but it's going to be tough.
10:56Fingers crossed.
10:57Ash, there was a moment like with Andrew and Molly,
10:59they were also getting stuck into the local cuisine, right?
11:02And it actually almost gave Andrew a moment to sort of chill out
11:06and put at ease some of his anxieties where he opened up about his heart attack, right?
11:10What is it about being so far away and outside of your comfort zone
11:15that makes you feel comfortable enough to talk about those things?
11:18I think it just puts everything into perspective, doesn't it?
11:21Like it's such a like trial and tribulation situation to be in.
11:26And for that amount of time, I can't even imagine how it is to do that actually.
11:31And I think especially by this leg, they have been going and going and going.
11:35I think all you do is think about what are you grateful for?
11:38You know, like, why am I here?
11:39I guess like, what is your reason for doing this?
11:42And I guess knowing that he overcame this massive health scare,
11:47it's kind of like just an appreciation, isn't it?
11:49Like, wow, I can't believe I get to do this and do it with my daughter.
11:52How amazing is that?
11:53I think it's so nice.
11:54It's a really special space to do it.
11:56I think you spoke about your health before with MRKH.
12:00How do you think it is opening up about something on a show like this?
12:04It's something that like you can't prepare yourself for,
12:07because actually when you're in that moment,
12:09you are sharing that with you and the person that you're doing the race with.
12:12Right.
12:12So, you know, at the time that I shared my condition of MRKH,
12:15I was sat with my brother on a bench in the middle of nowhere.
12:19And then suddenly you've got millions of viewers that are about to watch it.
12:22And that opens up like a completely different world.
12:24So it's like, yes, you've come to terms with it.
12:27And you're, you know, you're speaking to that other person about it.
12:30But then the ripple effect that that has once the show goes out is like phenomenal,
12:34because it's like the viewers are watching that and going,
12:37Oh, I have that too.
12:38Or I can relate to that.
12:39And I've always said like race across the world.
12:41Yes, you are showing different parts of the world,
12:44but you are sharing pockets of lives that people can share with you.
12:47And it's so magical because you can't do that any other time.
12:50Yeah.
12:51So, yeah, I think, you know, big respect for anyone that can go on a show like that and speak
12:54about it.
12:55But I think it will have done worlds of good for Andrew himself.
12:59Jack, Ash, so Joe and Kush really enjoyed themselves on this leg.
13:03How do you think the Scouse boys have changed?
13:05I just think even though I was saying about them, you know,
13:07it feels like they've got the spirit of these 40 year old men who've lived a life.
13:11You have to remember that I think they've come a long way since the start with that.
13:14And it was just very much like, mate, we're doing this thing, how fun, whatever.
13:17And then they've really turned into quite formidable competitors.
13:21I feel like we've watched them, not to sound like some old patronising man,
13:24but I feel like we've watched them grow up in the space of, you know, 43, 45 days, whatever it
13:28is so far.
13:30And they're just a joy to watch, aren't they?
13:32But at the same time, the essence of them hasn't changed at all.
13:35It's like they really started with this raw open mindedness to everything.
13:40I think when you're younger, you have a susceptibility to be a little bit like,
13:44oh, I don't know other cultures, because you don't know it.
13:47And those boys, they just get stuck into anything.
13:50Like, it's so great.
13:51And when you're saying like, oh, I'd love to, my mum would go crazy about this.
13:54Yeah, yeah, yeah.
13:54I wish I could tell everyone back at home.
13:55It's just, it's so infectious to watch someone enjoying that kind of thing.
13:59And then the little, like, Scousisms of him being like, this is boss.
14:01And I'm like, yeah, yeah, it's boss, this is boss.
14:04Yeah, when they're looking at the outfits and they're like, they drip hard, man.
14:08They're the drippiest out there, man.
14:10I was like, yeah, they just love it.
14:12Also, who knew that they were so musically talented?
14:14Right.
14:15Right, yeah.
14:17It wasn't even drumsticks, was it?
14:18It was just like two twigs.
14:19Yeah, and all of a sudden, Joe was like, so I play the trombone.
14:23And I was like, wait, what?
14:24And all the twigs we've got.
14:27Man, that is crazy.
14:28Crazy, crazy.
14:29The throat singing is a proper ancient practice, isn't it?
14:32Yeah, and they use it for a wide variety of things.
14:36They use it for luring animals, that's the first thing.
14:39They try and get animals using it.
14:41And they use it to try and get babies to sleep.
14:43Yeah, ain't no baby sleeping.
14:46And listen, yeah, like you said, it's an ancient practice,
14:48but it does take years and years to master it.
14:51It's something that they're really, really proud of.
14:52Put that...
14:53I'm like, Britain's got talent.
14:54Isn't it?
14:55Two notes at once is crazy, by the way.
14:57Like, that is so impressive.
14:59Betty, Katie and Harrison also had some heart-to-hearts
15:02in this episode as well, right?
15:03Yeah.
15:04And what is it like doing the race with a sibling?
15:08Challenging.
15:10Yeah, no, go on, it's challenging.
15:12It's definitely challenging because, I mean,
15:14the thing is with Katie and Harrison,
15:16they said they came into it like the 1%,
15:19top 1% of being siblings.
15:20Me and James were like the top 75%.
15:23Like, we didn't speak.
15:24We didn't...
15:25You know, it was just kind of like,
15:26oh, my older brother's not here.
15:28Oh, I have a younger brother.
15:28Let's do the race together.
15:30Do you know?
15:30Fine.
15:30Whereas it's like these two, like the bond that they have,
15:33and the fact that their bond has got stronger.
15:35Yeah.
15:36Like, big respect for...
15:37I mean, when she introduced and she was like,
15:38yeah, we go singing and dancing together.
15:40If me and James saw each other out in town,
15:42we'd be like, avoid eye contact, leave.
15:44Don't come near me.
15:45Yeah.
15:45Who are you?
15:46So, even though I can relate that they've done it with a sibling,
15:49like, can't relate that they're that close,
15:50but I just absolutely love their bond and, yeah,
15:52I just think race does give you that, you know,
15:55extra level of your relationship, no matter who you do it with.
15:58Now it's time for the return of one-star reviews.
16:01It's quite simply, I'm just going to read some genuine one-star reviews
16:05and then you guys just have to basically decipher
16:08where this location they're talking about is, okay?
16:11So, let's go in with the first one.
16:12It's an easy one to tick off with a boring,
16:16it's a lump of metal in the ground next to the motorway.
16:19Where's that?
16:20Angel of the North.
16:21You're going...
16:21Eiffel Tower.
16:22Jack, you're saying...
16:23Angel of the North.
16:24Oh, yeah.
16:25That's a good one.
16:26The next clue there is,
16:27keep going and check out the Penshaw Monument in Sunderland.
16:30Angel of the North.
16:31We're sticking with it.
16:32Eiffel Tower.
16:34That is the boring,
16:35it's the boring lump of metal.
16:39Scarlet Moffat's contender for the eighth wonder of the world,
16:41as she said.
16:42The Angel of the North.
16:42That is the correct answer.
16:43That's one from one.
16:44That's very good.
16:45Very good.
16:45Right, next one.
16:46I risked my life for a stupid picture.
16:50That could be funny.
16:50Think about anything like Instagramable,
16:52like something that way you've gone...
16:53Yeah, like that swing that people go on
16:54that looks like you've flung off the end of the world,
16:56whatever that is.
16:57Farley.
16:57Is it?
16:58I don't think it's a famous wonder.
17:00Instagramable thing.
17:01Or that crazy zip line, yeah,
17:02that's like the biggest one in the world that you do.
17:05Oh, nice.
17:05Where's that one?
17:06Who knows?
17:07But I feel like anywhere's risking your life.
17:09Like if you take a photo with the Lenin Tara Pisa,
17:11if someone barges into you, you've risked your life,
17:13haven't you?
17:14Do you know what I mean?
17:16Anywhere's unsafe for those with the eyes to see.
17:18Anywhere can be a hazard.
17:18All right, the other clue is,
17:19I need to ask another person to risk their life
17:21to take a picture of me and my family.
17:23So somebody else is also, whoever's taking the picture
17:27is also risking their life.
17:30Can you give us a third clue?
17:31Zebra.
17:33Crossing.
17:33Crossing.
17:35A safari.
17:37It's the most lethal zebra crossing ever created.
17:40Oh, it's a zebra crossing.
17:41Yeah.
17:41Abbey Road in London.
17:42Oh, for crying out loud.
17:44That's what I'm saying.
17:45Of the Beatles cover.
17:45I would leave a one-star review of that place.
17:47That was my review.
17:49What a load of old rubbish.
17:51You'd leave a one-star review about that one-star review.
17:55I'm so glad you're triggered.
17:58I hate failing.
17:58You didn't get the point.
17:59I'm not very good at it.
18:00Right, here's the next one.
18:01Once you've seen one room,
18:02you've seen them all,
18:03they are overdone and gaudy.
18:05Sounds like my house.
18:08Ash's house renovation.
18:11Ikea?
18:14Who's leaving a one-star review about Ikea?
18:16Yeah, you're right, actually.
18:17He's reviewing Ikea.
18:17Five-star for the meatballs.
18:19Actually, I would.
18:19There are enough pictures of Louis to make you gag.
18:22So, the big fancy French house,
18:24Louis the however many 16th, 14th or something, is it?
18:27What?
18:28Louis the 14th.
18:29Louis the something or other.
18:30We're onto something.
18:31Go on.
18:31Yeah.
18:32The Palace of Versailles.
18:34Yay!
18:35Come on, Ze.
18:37Redemption.
18:38Thank God.
18:39Okay, the final one, right?
18:41This is a tough one.
18:43Nature is crap.
18:45That's it.
18:46Good.
18:46That's it.
18:47The Amazon rainforest.
18:49No.
18:50No.
18:50Can you leave a review for that?
18:51Yeah.
18:52I don't think so.
18:52I thought you could try.
18:54Maybe someone else thought it was Amazon.
18:55That's probably just...
18:57That's someone with hay fever
18:58that's just stuck inside really, really annoying right now.
19:01That's just like, nature's crap.
19:03Someone who hates the sun.
19:05Nature is crap.
19:06Nature is crap.
19:09Oh!
19:09Grand Canyon.
19:10Pow!
19:11Boom!
19:12We've got it.
19:13See, teamwork.
19:14Teamwork.
19:15That's it.
19:16277 miles long, one mile deep.
19:18Nature is crap.
19:19Nature is crap.
19:20Nature is crap.
19:21That is crazy.
19:22Well done guys.
19:23Three out of four.
19:23Yeah?
19:24Congrats.
19:25Congrats.
19:26You're not very happy with that.
19:27Quite a few minutes.
19:28You cut that one out.
19:29We've got three out of three.
19:30Woohoo!
19:32This is not changing.
19:33Alright.
19:33Thank you guys for playing.
19:34And for all of you at home as well,
19:36if you have visited a famous landmark abroad
19:38and it just doesn't quite live up to expectations
19:40and you want to rant about it,
19:41tell us on WhatsApp.
19:42Just message us on 08000 487 387.
19:45Now it's time to return to episode seven.
19:48It is only fair that I think that we revisit the moment
19:51that Katie and Harrison take in the local festivities.
19:53How was that?
19:54That was the best experience ever.
19:57Yeah?
19:57I am an absolute disaster on the dance floor.
20:00Your turn.
20:02That's not afternoon.
20:03I can't dance.
20:04Harrison.
20:04No.
20:05Harrison, you have to.
20:06Katie, Katie, on this trip I've had to speak to random people,
20:09stay in people's houses.
20:10Yes.
20:10I have not felt anxiety in my chest like this once.
20:14This is your song?
20:15It's not my song.
20:16Let's go.
20:17Let's go.
20:18Let's go.
20:19Oh.
20:19Me.
20:20Yes.
20:22Okay.
20:22Okay, where's this go?
20:23Same one.
20:26Oh, where are we going?
20:29It's like he's being held against his will.
20:31I know.
20:32I know.
20:32Bless it.
20:33We need some WD40 on them here.
20:35It's a big time.
20:37Those jokes.
20:38I mean, fair play to them both for like getting stuck in though.
20:41Like going on that dance floor.
20:42Betty, if that was you and James, like who do you reckon would be on the dance floor first?
20:45James, 100%.
20:46Yeah.
20:47Especially if he's had a beer, but he loves a good boogie on a dance floor.
20:49So yeah, he would be up there.
20:50That's wicked.
20:51I'm getting flashbacks as well to like the school disco.
20:53Yeah.
20:53That's what it would be.
20:54Jack, Ash, who do you reckon would be the most adventurous out of you two?
20:58Who would be the Katie, who would be the Harrison?
21:00So, Ash has that gene where she thinks anything that she puts her mind to, she can do.
21:05You know, like she'll watch the Olympics and be like,
21:07Oh yeah, fine, 100 metre sprint, like give me a week and I could beat Usain Bolt.
21:10Like that's how her brain works.
21:11I'm the opposite.
21:13I watch stuff and I'm like, that is such a feat of like human endurance.
21:17So there's no way I could ever achieve that.
21:19Right.
21:19You definitely throw caution to the wind more than I do.
21:22Yeah, but then you do, you try everything.
21:24That's why we're bad when we travel together because we just end up in all sorts of scenarios.
21:29I like rules and regulations, Ash doesn't.
21:31So we were in Brazil for New Year and they were like,
21:33the waves are really bad, don't go in the water at the moment.
21:35She's like, how bad can it be?
21:36I'm just going to go in the water.
21:37I was like, you're going to die, like get out of the water.
21:39Yeah, me.
21:40Woo!
21:40How tall are you?
21:424'11".
21:42Yeah, that's wild confidence.
21:44Wild confidence diving into those waves.
21:46In my head I'm Moana.
21:47Yeah.
21:47So I'm like, obviously I'll grow gills and just be fine.
21:51Don't be weird.
21:51I don't think Moana grows gills.
21:53Have you not seen it?
21:55Hybrid.
21:55Hybrid Moana.
21:56Moana 3 that I've not seen yet.
21:58Yes, Moana 3.
21:58You don't know about it yet.
22:00Soon to come.
22:01Sorry.
22:03I mean, right.
22:04So as well as obviously the dancing and getting stuck into that culture,
22:07there was a lot of memorable cuisine throughout this episode as well.
22:10What's been your most out there culinary experience, would you say,
22:14like when you've been on your travels and where are you?
22:15Oh God.
22:17Oh, Morocco tagines.
22:19Oh, tagines are crazy.
22:20I just came back from now.
22:21Well.
22:21I don't eat meat.
22:22They just kept giving more jagmeat.
22:24So then they'd be like, yes, this is vegetarian.
22:26And it just wasn't.
22:27And I'd be like, hmm, this sausage is delicious.
22:31But also like the good thing with the tagine is obviously it's been cooking for hours
22:35and you slow, that falls off the bone with the meat.
22:37You don't want a slow cooked pea for 12 hours.
22:40It just goes like, because you eat it and it's just like this in your mouth.
22:43That's funny.
22:43I mean, horses played a big part in the culture out there in Mongolia.
22:48You guys have had an experience with a horse, right?
22:50Oh God.
22:51Jack and Ash.
22:52Yeah.
22:52We were in Mexico.
22:54We went on a night out, which is how every story of Oscar.
22:57Yeah.
22:57Right.
22:58We were in Mexico and we met this really nice bloke in a club and became good friends with
23:03him.
23:03And then as the sun was coming, he was like, oh, I've got horses.
23:06Do you want to go up to like our family ranch up in the hills?
23:08Of course we do.
23:08We were like, yeah, cool.
23:09You could only get there by horseback.
23:11So straight after the club.
23:12On the night out?
23:13Yeah.
23:13It was 6am.
23:14We got on these horses and went up to his family house up in the mountains
23:19and it was the most beautiful.
23:20Yeah.
23:21It was just one of those things where, you know where you were saying about you've got
23:24to get involved with whatever they offer you?
23:26Yeah.
23:26It was the epitome of that.
23:27Like there's no negative to the story.
23:28We were just like, wow.
23:29Of course we're like, I mean, we were a bit tipsy.
23:31So it wasn't ideal being on the back of a horse.
23:33Don't recommend.
23:34Tell me safety.
23:35But we did have a great time.
23:37And it was just like sick.
23:38That's just such a nice thing to show like the human condition of people just being kind
23:43and nice and us just getting on.
23:44We still chat to him.
23:44And he took the whole day off.
23:46Rodrigo.
23:47We love Rodrigo.
23:48We love Rodrigo.
23:48He took the whole day off work.
23:50And it was my birthday as well.
23:51So he was like, this is my birthday present to you.
23:53And we're looking at each other.
23:54I'm turning around.
23:55Jack's on this stallion.
23:56And I'm thinking, what's going on?
23:58We went out for a margarita.
24:00I don't know how this happened.
24:00I was doing my duolingo as well because it had nearly run out.
24:03I was on horseback just doing duolingo.
24:06It was crazy.
24:07And he bought you a little toy tortoise.
24:09Yeah.
24:09I've still got it.
24:10I know.
24:11Friends all over the world.
24:12Betty, what was your most memorable homestay?
24:14I mean, it probably has to be the infamous Passport Gate homestay where we were staying
24:20in a lovely house.
24:21I realised we'd left the passports on the bus.
24:23Didn't think we were going to get any further.
24:25We.
24:26I left the passports on the bus.
24:28Where did you put them?
24:29Like, how does everybody lose their passports?
24:31Yeah.
24:31It was in my bum bag.
24:32It had everything.
24:33I mean, I've done it since off the race as well.
24:35I said she.
24:35CEO of losing passports.
24:37It had my camera in.
24:37Everything in.
24:38And I left the whole bum bag on the bus.
24:40So, I mean, that poor lady, she got it back for us and we could continue the race.
24:44And then Alfie knowing got her 24 hours.
24:47You know, we would have been in front.
24:48Since then it's just all history.
24:50But yeah.
24:52That's not the saying, is it?
24:53That's not the saying.
24:54Well, since then it's just all history.
24:57That sounds like a true winner.
24:59Yeah, innit?
24:59That's just history and history.
25:02I meant to say the rest is history and forgot the saying.
25:05Jack, Ash, there seems to be a lot of negotiating to help the teams get that little bit further throughout
25:11this race.
25:12How would you say that your negotiating skills are when you're travelling?
25:16Bartering.
25:17Getting it down.
25:18Getting lifts.
25:19Getting on horses.
25:20You do everything with an air of cheekiness.
25:22This is like my mantra to life.
25:24Okay.
25:25Smile on your face.
25:26Smile and wave.
25:27Yeah.
25:27And you just find whatever the local translation version of it is.
25:30Can I be a little bit cheeky here?
25:32Yeah.
25:33So you find out what that translation is and it opens so many doors because they're like,
25:38okay, okay, yeah, fine.
25:40I think you do like to bat your eyelashes.
25:44Yes.
25:45That works quite well, I think, with the right kinds of people.
25:48Fine.
25:48It doesn't work so well on abuelas.
25:50I rarely clock in when it's like an older woman.
25:53You can read the room.
25:54So we kind of actually can tick off quite a lot of demographics between us being like,
25:58hang on, I'll take this one.
25:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:00And then it's some bloke who owns a club and I'm like, I'll stay outside.
26:04Or if it's like we lead a lift somewhere, I am just a tiny girl.
26:07She goes, I'm just a damsel.
26:10I'm just a damsel.
26:11I'm just a damsel.
26:11Yeah.
26:13Now, sometimes on this show, we hear some travel tales, fails and hacks from you.
26:18And sometimes we hear from the former racers.
26:20And today we have got the wonderful Sean Ed and Finn.
26:22Hello, Detour.
26:23I'm Finn.
26:24And I'm Sean Ed.
26:25And we were on series five of Race Across the World.
26:27And in our series, we actually went to India, which was very overwhelming for me,
26:31as you probably saw.
26:32But we have actually since been back and we've seen the Taj Mahal.
26:36And we have a question for you.
26:37If you could go back to any country from previous series, what country would it be?
26:42That's crazy.
26:43That's a good question.
26:44Where would you go to if you had to go to any other country if you were doing Race Across
26:48the World?
26:49Well, I loved the South America route.
26:52I just think that was, I mean, I've done Central America, Mexico, but South America,
26:56yeah, 100% is top of my list.
26:58What about you guys?
26:58I think South America.
27:00I'm so keen.
27:00Anywhere that takes us, like to Brazil.
27:03Anywhere that will take us.
27:04Anywhere.
27:05True.
27:05Full stop.
27:06Because we've actually had quite a lot of visas.
27:07Any plane that will give us the right route at this stage.
27:10I travelled around South America for a few months at the Olympics in 2016 and just fell
27:15in love with it.
27:16So I keep trying to take her to different countries in South America.
27:20So I totally agree.
27:20I just think South American people are just the most gorgeous, welcoming.
27:25Spanish is such a beautiful language.
27:27It just, yeah, it's just great.
27:29And they've got a better angel than Arthur, haven't they?
27:31Yeah.
27:33That's how you're going to describe it, though.
27:36Betty said that, not me.
27:37I did not say that.
27:39What about you?
27:40You've travelled to so many, 92?
27:4293 now, because of Peru.
27:44Because you went to go get a haircut in Peru.
27:46Get a pound haircut, yeah.
27:4793, go on.
27:48Mongolia.
27:49Mongolia?
27:50Have you been there before?
27:51No.
27:51Okay, so you would love to go there?
27:52Yeah.
27:53What they're doing is my dream.
27:54I love it.
27:55So you're sitting there at home going, oh.
27:56Oh, I'm sorry.
27:57When the route came out, I had a tantrum.
28:01Right.
28:02Now remember, if you've got a travel tale, fail, or a hack that you'd love to share with us,
28:06then please do just WhatsApp us on 08000 487 387.
28:10Alf, I can see your jacket.
28:12It's locked and loaded.
28:13You're ready to go, and it's now time for your penultimate optimal route.
28:17Augie Taharhorn, your race starts now.
28:20Right.
28:21For this leg, I'm going to go south.
28:22Although there is a paved highway that stretches along the northern part
28:26of the country between Ulangom and Hahhorin, the south of the country offers a lot more
28:29in terms of detours.
28:31First, you need to get down from Augie down to Altai.
28:34Now that's a 660km route that will take you along the southern part of the country
28:37and should largely be paved, allowing for a much smoother start to your trip.
28:41Now you are going to have to rely on your own charm to get you between these points,
28:45but the good news is that this route is one of the busiest in Western Mongolia.
28:49Now, as you've seen in this episode, prices for these trips can vary wildly,
28:52so make sure you know what price you're comfortable paying
28:55and be prepared to do a bit of haggling.
28:57Who would take the reign in Mongolia?
28:59Me.
29:00Oh, see, I think the opposite.
29:02Or are you?
29:03No.
29:04A 50-50 chance I'd get it right, wasn't it?
29:06I think the minute they said, I think the minute they showed you a map and they said,
29:10here's the map, but honestly, who knows?
29:12It doesn't work.
29:12I would have had to go, right, we're doing this with whimsy.
29:15I'd whimsy, yeah.
29:16Yeah, I would.
29:17Yeah, let's pause that, just think about ever doing the show, all right?
29:20Just take a second.
29:21Continue, Alf, sorry.
29:22So also, if you do end up hitchhiking with a local, remember to ask them what sort of price they're
29:26expecting for the trip right at the start.
29:29Now, along that southern route, you'll be driving through small towns and sparse but beautiful landscapes.
29:33In addition to the camels who brought Mark and Margot so much joy, see if you can spot the endangered
29:37saiga antelope,
29:38which is recognisable by their round, bulbous nose.
29:41Now, hunting has put these species on the brink of extinction, but conservation efforts have increased their numbers to over
29:4650,000.
29:47Once you get to Altai, you'll have a chance to rest and recuperate, so explore the town,
29:51because there's a beautiful monastery, plus they have a local cinema, which is cool.
29:55That's it, that's what you need.
29:56Are you showing Project Hail Mary?
29:57Yeah.
30:00That's where you're going.
30:02Utilising local cabs, minivans, and helpful locals, continue your road trip along the highway until you get to Bayern Hongor.
30:08It's a lively, bustling town filled with cafes and local markets,
30:11so it's the perfect place to immerse yourself in the local culture and try some of those native cuisines.
30:16And whilst you're in the area, there's a detour that's well worth making.
30:18In 16 micronometres south of town, you'll find the Chargol Jute Hot Springs,
30:22which is a small spa resort where you can soak in the naturally-heated mineral waters that Mongolians have been
30:26using for thousands of years.
30:27You can even stay there and spend some time enjoying the on-site activities, including sports fireworks and karaoke.
30:33Get your Mongolian throat singing voices ready.
30:35Yeah, we're ready for it.
30:37Once you're done, make your way back to the town and continue along the highway to Avakir.
30:42From this settlement, you'll have to come off the highway and take dirt roads all the way up to Harhorin,
30:47a journey of around 150 kilometres, but you'll see scenery that you're not going to be able to see anywhere
30:51else on the planet.
30:52That was easy, wasn't it?
30:53Now make sure you rest up because the final leg could be the most challenging in race across the world
30:59history.
30:59Alfie Watts, everyone. I just can't.
31:03Well done, man.
31:04And finally, it is that time where I get to reveal to you a super-exclusive, not-seen-anywhere-else
31:09sneak peek from the final episode of Race Across the World.
31:12Are you guys excited?
31:13Yes.
31:13You should be.
31:14As we're getting so close to the end, Andrew and Molly reflect on how the race has changed their relationship.
31:20Enjoy.
31:24This whole race taught me so much about myself, about daddy, about our relationship.
31:31I'm so proud of you.
31:32I am.
31:33You've achieved at everything you've done.
31:37I can be independent, I can make decisions, but I think this is the first time he's seen me in
31:42those kind of moments.
31:44I'm not expecting you now to be the little child. I'm also expecting you to kind of come back with
31:50a retort.
31:51Yeah.
31:51If I'm talking nonsense.
31:52And I think also I'm more confident in turning around to you and being a daddy your own.
31:56I would have held you the wee baby. You were so helpless. Now you are fit for the world.
32:03Someone's chopping onions, man.
32:04Oh, wow.
32:05That's really sweet.
32:06I love them too.
32:07Yeah.
32:08This is the beauty of race across the world though, because you get to witness beautiful, pure moments like that.
32:13It's such a lovable cast, isn't it?
32:15It is.
32:15It really is.
32:16You're just going to see Margot potting in the background.
32:19That's what's going to happen.
32:20She's just going to snot in like, hey, girl.
32:21Drinking tea.
