00:00The trial was South Carolina's equivalent of the O.J. Simpson trial.
00:04This thing caught the attention of the entire state, and there were more plot twists and turn
00:10than Game of Thrones. This simply seems to be the latest twist and turn for Mr. Murdoch.
00:16Alex Murdoch, the disgraced legal scion who was found guilty in 2023 of brutally killing his wife
00:22and son, had his murder convictions overturned on May 13th by the South Carolina Supreme Court.
00:28The shocking twist came after the court claimed that Colleton County court clerk, Rebecca Hill,
00:34once viewed as sweet homespun Miss Becky, had quote, placed her fingers on the scales of justice.
00:4157-year-old Murdoch was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences without parole for the grisly
00:462021 murders of his wife Maggie and their 22-year-old son Paul, following a dramatic
00:52six-week trial that gripped the nation. The Supreme Court's ruling is the latest twist for Murdoch,
00:57whose trial was widely publicized and featured in crime documentaries and podcasts.
01:02On top of his now-overturned two life terms for the double murders, the disgraced lawyer also
01:08separately pleaded guilty to dozens of financial crimes, where he is serving 27-year and 40-year
01:14sentences. Prosecutors in both financial crime cases said Murdoch brazenly billed clients at his
01:19personal injury law firm out of millions of dollars, burying him in conspiracy, fraud,
01:24and money laundering wraps. In the 5-0 ruling to overturn his murder convictions, the justices
01:30wrote that although there was significant time, money, and effort expended for the trial,
01:35they had quote, no choice and had to reverse the convictions since the clerk imposed quote,
01:40improper external influences on the jury. In 2024, lawyers for Murdoch alleged in an appeal that Hill
01:46tampered with the jury, steering them toward a belief that Murdoch was guilty during the publicized
01:51six-week trial. During an evidentiary hearing, a juror said Hill told the jurors to observe Murdoch's
01:57actions and to quote, watch him closely. Another juror said he heard Hill advise the panel to quote,
02:03watch his body language, before Murdoch took the stand. A South Carolina judge denied Murdoch a new
02:09trial at the time, ruling that his lawyers didn't prove that the comments influenced whether they found
02:14him guilty of killing his wife and one of his sons. She did some things that, honestly, in 25 years
02:20of
02:20practicing law, I've never seen done before. This was an officer of the court, and some of the
02:26allegations with respect to what she specifically was doing were really, really troubling. Hill pleaded
02:33guilty in December 2025 to obstruction of justice, perjury, and two counts of misconduct in office,
02:39after admitting she showed sealed crime scene photos to a reporter and lied about it. She also
02:44admitted to promoting her book about the trial through her public office. Hill was sentenced to
02:49probation, but prosecutors said they found insufficient evidence to prove jury tampering. At the time,
02:54attorneys for Murdoch argued that Hill's conduct tainted the trial, and jurors should not have heard
02:58extensive testimony about his financial crimes. The South Carolina Supreme Court said that
03:03prosecutors' efforts to get a conviction for Murdoch were quote, in vain, because Colleton County
03:08clerk of court Rebecca Hill placed her fingers on the scales of justice, thereby denying Murdoch his
03:14right to a fair trial by an impartial jury. Prosecutors maintained that the jury's unanimous
03:19verdict was sound due to the overwhelming evidence connecting Murdoch to the killings.
03:24South Carolina Attorney General Allen Wilson said his office disagrees with the Supreme Court's
03:29decision and will retry Murdoch quote, as soon as possible. Prosecutors argued that Murdoch,
03:35the heir to a storied legal dynasty, had killed his wife and son to cover up his extensive financial
03:40crimes. At the time of the murders, the family was facing a lawsuit from the family of 19-year-old
03:45Mallory Beach, who died after Paul drunkenly crashed a boat into a bridge in December 2019.
03:52Prosecutors said that a pre-trial hearing in the boat crash case, which had been scheduled to take
03:57place just three days after the murders, would have exposed Murdoch's criminal financial dealings.
04:02Despite the jury's verdict, Murdoch has denied killing Maggie and Paul.
04:06Mr. Murdoch had pled guilty to financial crimes in federal court, and he agreed to a 40-year
04:13sentence. Now, Murdoch, I think, is 57 years old. In federal court, unlike state court, you have to
04:20serve 85 percent of your sentence. So it's kind of a good belt and suspenders approach for prosecutors.
04:26Even if he's found not guilty in this case, he's not going to be walking free for a very,
04:33very long time, probably until he's 90 years old. But it's still important because then at least he
04:37does have a chance, if found not guilty, to one day get out of prison.
