02:37The Royal Naval Air Station in Somerset is one of the busiest military aviation bases in the UK.
02:44It's a hub for helicopter operations and training the naval aircrew.
02:51Off-duty, they spend their time in Messdex, a communal space for socialising, eating and relaxing.
02:59Each designer will get their very own Messdex to transform for the latest recruits.

05:25While they're on base, the sailors stay in mess blocks, sleeping upstairs in dormitories and hanging out together downstairs in
05:32their Messdex.

05:37There's an on-site canteen, but for after-hours snacks.
05:41I've never been able to do that in a room in my life.

06:37To help achieve their vision, each designer will have a carpenter and a decorator.

06:45So the inspiration for the room is, like, Scandinavian design.
06:49My idea of, like, the navy is quite rigid, and so I wanted to create a lot of softness.
06:53Like, we've got a lot of curvature going on, a lot of circles.
06:57We're extending the kitchen out to here, and there'll be a partition wall here.
07:02I'm sectioning off the kitchen with my plywood screens, which I'll have holes drilled out of.
07:08So having the holes in there adds to this kind of circle curvature thing that I wanted to bring into
07:12the space.
07:13Right, so you've got two full sheets of ply, and that one's five across.

07:19For me, the partition is the most important parts of the design.
07:22I reckon about 250 holes is going to take him quite a bit of time.

07:42We are going to start with moving the kitchen out of its current location and make a really large kitchen

07:50My design inspiration is going back to my Italian roots.
07:53It's really important that the kitchen is such a big part of the house.
07:57So kind of a country kitchen coming into this main section with some really nice florals and bright colours to
08:03make this space much more vibrant.
08:05It's kind of like home from home.
08:06When I was looking for my own house, the one thing for me which was no compromise is the kitchen.
08:12We have this big island, we host loads of parties, and everyone just socialises around the island.
08:18Leah's placing her bespoke kitchen island in the centre of her mess deck.
08:22Her second-hand kitchen will be upcycled with a lick of rich red paint,
08:27and brass light pendants will hang from the ceiling to create a cosy kitchen vibe.
08:33She'll convert the old kitchenette into a pantry, swapping the wall-hung cabinets for open shelving.
08:39The space will be colour-drenched in a bright green, and a feature wall will express Leah's botanical maximalist style.
08:48Beyond the kitchen, she's creating a cosy cinema snug, adding a new projector, screen, and an ingenious additional seating solution.

09:01Yeah, so basically slot under there is when it's not in use, doesn't take up too much space in the

09:06The bench underneath will be on cast-outs, so that part they can move to the other section of the

09:25Sophie's colour palette has been inspired by a naval tradition.

09:30The goal is to get your colours all the way around the board and then back into the hole.
09:34The concept I had for the room was based on the board game Ockers, which is a traditional navy game,
09:40so I wanted to bring that into the aesthetic.

09:49We'd probably quite like four of us to come down in an evening and having the space to do it

09:55This wall, we're going to do basically a box.

10:01Essentially, the idea has come from the Ockers board, from the arrows and blocks of colour,
10:05to take, like, this arrow motif around the room, wrapping the walls, going over the ceiling,
10:11just to tie that concept together.

10:27I've been inspired by the era that the Airbase was founded in, which is the Art Deco era transitioning into
10:35streamline modern,
10:36which mimics the lines of transport, like ships and trains, and the mural will take your eye kind of around
10:42the room and into the kitchen.
10:43It's a really nice technique to get it kind of irregular and organic is to, like, shake and turn the
10:51brush.
10:51I think it's always a bit nerve-wracking when you first put the paint on, because, you know, you have
10:57to trust your instincts the whole way.

11:33I just sort of worked through what he'd want in a space away from home.
11:38I think it just needs to be a bit more cooler in here.
11:40I'm like, well, I'm just gonna give you sci-fi, which is timelessly cool.
11:44I love, like, the sci-fi aesthetic.
11:47And when I was researching, like, what the sailors do,
11:50it's so, like-
11:52out of this world.
11:53And it's, like, the ships and the helicopters and things like that.
11:56and I just sort of wanted to do, like, little winks of sci-fi.

12:02I think it'll go darker, though, right?

12:07On the other end of the colour spectrum, it's Ajit.
12:10So as part of my research, I looked into some of the elements of colour theory
12:14and saw that orange is a really significant colour
12:16to symbolise friendship and social interaction.
12:19So that being a key aspect to address for the space,
12:22I've incorporated that in my design.
12:23It already feels like you're, like, really friendly to me at the moment.

12:42So the existing kitchen is right at the back
12:45and it's a bit dark, it's a bit dingy.
12:48So I've decided to turn that actually into a pantry.
12:52For the tiles in the kitchen, we don't have time to take them off and change them.
12:57So I'm just using a tile grout pen, which is black.
13:01So I'm just going round, basically, the current grout, which is white.
13:05It's super quick, super cheap and super easy.
13:07So it gives it a new kind of facelift.
13:12Sophie's also creating a pantry, complete with some wild walls.
13:17This space is HMS Heron.
13:19So I've got some Heron wallpaper to go in the pantry.
13:22Because it's such a tiny space, I think it'll make it a lot more interesting,
13:25especially against the open shelving that's going to be made from reclaimed wood.

13:34Ajit's adding the traditional British colours of red, white and blue.
13:39Because we're on a Royal Navy base,
13:41I really wanted to kind of take that thread
13:44and integrate a little bit of that into my design.

34:36I think design-wise, what attracted me to this at first
34:39was the chrome legs.
34:40That really fits really well with streamlined modern design,
34:42and the glass top was the perfect cherry on the top.

36:23Michelle and Dame Kelly Holmes have rendezvoused to inspect the mess decks.
36:27So, Kelly, how does it feel?
36:29I mean, you're back on a military establishment.
36:31I know.
36:32As soon as I come into a military barrack, I look around and I feel, yeah, it's partly my home.
36:38Dame Kelly Holmes is a British sporting legend, winning two gold medals in the 2004 Olympics.
36:46But she started her career serving 10 years in the British Army.
36:50Having been in the military, I want to walk into that room and say, yes, if I were still serving,
36:55this would be the room that I'd love to spend my time in.
36:57Our designers have been presented with a blank canvas.
37:01So this is where design can really play a big part.
37:05It can boost morale.
37:06It can make a space that you want to hang out in.
37:13The mess deck now has a purpose.
37:15My biggest achievement is really extending that kitchen space and providing more functionality and space for more than one person
37:21to actually cook their food.
37:22So I'm really, really proud of what I've done.
37:26There's a very strong colour theme here.
37:29I feel kind of, it's quite sort of nautical, the stripes going all the way around.
37:33What do you think about the orange ceiling?
37:35I've never seen an orange ceiling before.
37:38It's quite tangoed, isn't it?
37:40I find it very bright, especially with the fluorescents.
37:43So the kitchen has been pretty well left as it was.
37:46I mean, he's painted the tiles, but he's really inviting you to do most of your cooking and prep out
37:52here.
37:52I like his introduction of the OSB board for the sort of texture.
37:57I do love a bit of texture.
37:59I like the way that Ajit is hidden in the fridges.
38:02They're sort of out of your mind.

38:06I find myself imagining how I would use it.

38:53And I am really proud of what I've achieved.

39:05I'm literally expecting the floor to be sticky.
39:08I see she's made a very sort of clever colour scheme.
39:12I kind of love the idea that we're inspired by a traditional Navy game.
39:16And I can see that she's sort of brought in this very fancy pants wallpaper in the kitchen,
39:20which I find that very odd.
39:22That wallpaper, even though whether people like it or don't,
39:25should have been brought into the pub from the wall
39:28because that's what you would see in an old pub.
39:30And this feels like an old man's pub, doesn't it?
39:32Yeah.
39:32And yet there's other details in there that actually look quite interesting.
39:35So let's go have a look.
39:36I really like how she sort of added these raw wood shelves in there.
39:40But those lovely wooden shelves, if she'd even extended those out here,
39:44then these spaces start to talk to each other.
39:46Yeah.
39:47I think it's going to be a space where the sailors live in here,
39:50will find it quite quirky.
39:52They'll go, oh, wow, this is cool, right, pub, you know, kind of that vibe.
39:56But I don't think the sailors are actually even allowed to drink in their accommodation.
40:00So Sophie's actually dangling something that they cannot indulge in.
40:04Yeah.
40:04If it was designed better based on this look, then it could have worked well.
40:16I just really thought about, you know, the age of the people that are using it
40:19and I'm really excited to see what they're going to say,
40:24but I'd like to probably not hear it via the sofa.
40:34Oh, wow.
40:35The black is going across the ceiling and then down the other side.
40:39I wouldn't normally go with that, but I think with the strip lighting,
40:42it probably helps, right?
40:43Well, black's an unusual colour because you've got that light coming through.
40:46All that light reflects off the black,
40:48so it doesn't make a space necessarily feel really dark.
40:51I like the archway.
40:53The archway is quite a sort of soft way to tell me that this is one zone
40:57and that's a different zone over here.
40:59It does make the room work more as a whole room.
41:02I think I like this area quite a lot
41:04because it's got what I would expect a mess deck to have.
41:09Everyone loves a pool table in the military.
41:11I do remember doing this a lot.
41:12So I like it, yeah, dark boards and then a projector.

44:04I veer on the side of it's really not necessary
44:08because there's so much else here that is working quite well.
44:12But I think the issue here is that Duran has gone down the path
44:17of a kind of 30s theme that she's justified to herself
44:20because there was a base here from the 1930s.
44:23And so we see the Art Deco round, glass table, the lounger chair.
44:28Is that the most appropriate chair to use here?
44:30Because only one person can sit on that.
44:32You've got your little play area.
44:34I'm not sure about glass.
44:36That's going to get broken at some stage.
44:37That causes a hazard.
44:39And military banks don't like hazards.
44:42In many ways, this is a bit of a confusing room
44:45because there is a lot about it that is really clever.
44:48I love boxing in all the refrigerators.
44:51I love the way that she's laid out the room
44:53with this sort of very clear lounging area,
44:55very clear seating and dining area.
44:58What trips it up is then some of the material she's used.
45:01We can't use glass.
45:02It's dangerous.
45:10I think that the choices I made,
45:13the curation of things that I had,
45:14all worked together within my style
45:16and the vibe of the room.
45:18So, yeah, no, I'm really happy with them.
45:21I'm really proud of what I've achieved.
45:25So different.
45:26Wow.
45:27Totally different feel.
45:28There's a very strong design statement,
45:31so I'm seeing that in the furniture.
45:32I'm seeing it in the colours.
45:34But somehow I don't feel comfortable.
45:37I don't know whether it's because
45:38it's not common roomy enough.
45:40I don't feel like I could actually
45:41just throw myself down on that sofa somehow.
45:44Or maybe it's because I personally can't bear a bean bag.
45:47What's your kind of gut feeling?
45:50I mean, I quite like a bean bag
45:51and I think the sailors will like a bean bag.
45:54However, even though this looks incredible,
45:58this area here is too luxurious.
46:01This is no disrespect to the sailors,
46:03but it's too fancy.
46:05They're not going to keep this nice.
46:07In the way that other rooms extended the kitchen,
46:11actually, here we've somehow lost space
46:15because although I can be behind here
46:17chopping and prepping,
46:19I am cut off from the rest of the room,
46:21even though the screen is see-through.
46:24I love this.

46:26I do love this.
46:28And I love the fact that he's brought that into the room.
46:31And then this huge table,
46:32which I can see the emphasis of playing.
46:34It's a great idea, isn't it?
46:36But the reality of it is,
46:38if two of you are playing table tennis,
46:40it is really annoying because of that ping-pong-ping.

46:44You know, and also if I just want to eat my food here.
46:47And you can't actually play table tennis
46:48because there's a wall right behind you.

52:14delicious room to walk into with that you know designer sofa the pale blue or
52:20the circles and everything I mean we walked in and we're like oh my goodness
52:23look but yes what was your inspiration behind this I was inspired by circles
52:32weirdly and this kind of idea of roundness bringing that kind of enveloping
52:37feeling and calm and I found this really cool sofa that was also round and then
52:41the the beanbags and on the way was like ah this actually works really well with
52:45things that I you know enjoy and things that I would want so all the thinking
52:51the concept the ideas loving it the bit where I start to get a bit nervous is
52:55when it comes a little bit too much about you yeah what you like as I got the sense
53:01that you found that sofa which was absolutely beautiful and then
53:05everything sort of rippled out from that and you didn't maybe stop enough to go
53:08is this sofa the right sofa for a load of 18 to 25 year old trainee sailors yeah when I
53:15first walked on I thought wow I mean it looked fantastic it really did it was a
53:20lovely design if I had an apartment I would have been oh yeah just come and
53:23design that for me you know lovely sofa but it was maybe not practical for the
53:28type of young people that are going to use that on a day-to-day basis perfect
53:33segue to Jan there was so much that worked in your room the issue though it was again
53:39you had this beautiful 30s theme which then I feel dictated your choice of
53:45furniture and they dictated the round coffee tables but also we have that
53:52beautiful glass-topped games table yeah which neither of us we're going to go
53:57anywhere near to try and lift the glass up to get the games out it's just going to
54:01get broken I took some inspiration from products that were you know being made
54:06around that time but I didn't feel that it held me hostage at least I maybe it
54:11seemed like that but just from a very practical level thinking about the
54:15materials they weren't appropriate for the people that would be using it I was
54:2018 well a month before I was 18 before I joined and I looked at it from that
54:23point of view if I was in that space would I go in and say I think you did what
54:41you had
54:41to do and you did follow the brief it's the materials that let you down on my side so Sophie
54:47I think you started with what could have been a really strong concept but allowed yourself to get
54:52distracted Duran I think your space and she did work everything was in the right place but your
55:01theme meant that some of the pieces were just inappropriate they weren't right for
55:05the people that were using it Johnny I think again it's a question of distraction you got
