00:00The Pacific Island nation, currently known as Nauru, is planning a referendum to change its official name.
00:08The tiny country's native language is Dororin, Na'o'ero.
00:13Nauru emerged because Na'o'ero could not be properly pronounced by foreign tongues
00:19and was changed not by our choice, but for convenience, the government said in a statement on Tuesday.
00:26Now, authorities are proposing to return to Na'o'ero, a name that more faithfully honours our nation's heritage,
00:34our language and our identity, the statement said.
00:38The change has to be done through referendum, as it requires an alteration of the country's constitution.
00:45Germany claimed Na'o'ero as a protectorate from the end of the 19th century until World War I,
00:51when the island was captured by Australian troops.
00:55It was jointly administered by Australia, the UK and New Zealand before gaining independence in 1968.
