00:20A former American mayor accused of secretly working for the Chinese government.
00:27A political bombshell is shaking California and reigniting fears about foreign influence inside the United States.
00:36Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, has admitted to acting as an illegal agent of China.
00:44According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Wang secretly promoted pro-Beijing propaganda inside the United States
00:52while allegedly operating under the direction of officials linked to the People's Republic of China.
00:59And prosecutors say she never informed the U.S. government about those activities.
01:04The revelation is sending shockwaves through American political circles.
01:09According to court filings, the 58-year-old former mayor worked alongside California resident Yao Ning Mike Sun to run
01:19a media platform called U.S. News Center.
01:23The website presented itself as a news source for Chinese Americans, but prosecutors say it was actually publishing Chinese government
01:32-approved narratives and propaganda,
01:34including articles defending Beijing against accusations of abuses against Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang.
01:42Investigators say the content was not independent journalism.
01:47It allegedly came directly from Chinese officials through encrypted WeChat communications.
01:53Federal authorities claim Wang and her associate received instructions from PRC-linked contacts
02:00and then distributed that messaging inside the United States.
02:04And the case gets even more dramatic.
02:07Her alleged co-operator, Yao Ning Sun, already pleaded guilty in 2025 to acting as an illegal foreign agent and
02:16is currently serving a four-year prison sentence.
02:20Now, Wang herself has agreed to plead guilty to one felony count.
02:25She faces up to ten years in federal prison.
02:28On Monday, she officially resigned from her position as mayor.
02:33Her attorneys insist the conduct related only to her personal life and not her official duties as an elected leader.
02:41But federal officials are not downplaying the implications.
02:45U.S. Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg called the situation deeply concerning, saying,
02:53Individuals elected to public office in the United States should act only for the people of the United States that
03:00they represent.
03:01The FBI says the case reflects broader concerns about Chinese influence operations inside American institutions.
03:10Especially in diaspora communities, where Beijing is accused of trying to shape narratives, build influence, and cultivate political proxies.
03:19And the timing could hardly be more explosive, because the case emerges just as President Donald Trump prepares to meet
03:28Chinese President Xi Jinping in a high-stakes Beijing summit.
03:32A meeting expected to focus on trade, Taiwan, Iran, and growing geopolitical rivalry.
03:39The Wang case is adding yet another layer to an already tense U.S.-China relationship, and raising a troubling question
03:49that now stretches far beyond California.
