00:00I think 95% of sushi is terrible and over Christ and most people have never actually had good sushi.
00:10This is a special Asian food themed stream for Asian Pacific American heritage month.
00:16Now we're getting to a little bit of fun where you pick two iconic dishes from eight different
00:21cultures. And as a group, we're going to talk it out, debate, maybe share some memories and
00:25try to rank them from top tier to less than top tier. I don't want to say bottom tier,
00:29but just less than. And so we have our 16 dishes here. So we're going to kick things off with
00:36adobo,
00:37which is a Filipino dish. You want to try to explain what adobo is if anybody doesn't know?
00:42It's the nectar of the gods. It feels like what it means to be Filipina, just like warm, comforting.
00:49Definitely. I like above the middle, above the middle for sure. It's like one of those things
00:54where like it's a good struggle meal if you need it to be. ProBaddy actually has some really good
00:58like criteria. Ease of making, versatility, high leftover quality. What if we put it at like a four?
01:04Let's put out a four for now. Yeah. Yeah. Up next from Vietnam, we got the banh mi.
01:11If it were me, banh mi would be like so high up there because it's so convenient. It's always
01:15refreshing. It has all the food groups. I'm biased though. I love a good sandwich. You know what I
01:20mean? And I think of all the Asian cuisines, this is probably the best Asian sandwich you could get.
01:26Nothing is easier to sneak in, in your purse to the movie theater. I'm going to put a banh mi
01:31at like
01:32a six or seven only because I think banh mi is incredible. But when I'm thinking about what I'm
01:38craving to comfort, I don't know if banh mi does it. I might move banh mi like towards like an
01:43eight or nine.
01:44Cause we do have a lot of business. I accept that. I accept that. Yeah. But since we mentioned it,
01:50I think we got to bring in pho cause this is a heavy hitter, I think on our list.
01:54It's so good. This is a heavy hitter.
01:57It's usually number one for me.
01:58Are you sick? Heartbreak. Yep.
02:02Heartbreak is crazy. Yeah. Happy. It's that combination of the basil and the mint.
02:08Uh, jalapeno. Malaria. Uh, girl. She said, let me live in D.
02:17Is anyone that's getting malaria in their pho or just AV?
02:22Oh, okay. Wait, that makes sense. Sorry. I thought you meant that you were getting malaria from the pho.
02:28No, no. Like it's to cure the malaria. Yeah. We can keep it at two and see what happens.
02:33The other, um, Filipino dish that we have is sinigang. For people who don't know what sinigang is,
02:40how would you describe it, Emily? I didn't see her on here.
02:46How would I describe her? Perfection. Cleansing. So I don't get to eat it as much because I have a
02:52shrimp allergy. However, if I pop a Benadryl and just know that I'm going to be living for a few
02:58days,
02:59it's like, it'll be fine. It's a solid like seven for me. Just have the EpiPen ready.
03:04Not the EpiPen. Let me just, let me just.
03:08I feel like we could chop sinigang from this list. Pudding. I want sinigang more than banh mi.
03:17That's fair. All right. I want to hear it. I want to hear it. You're a soup person. That makes
03:21sense.
03:22I am kind of a soup person, but I think it's because my favorite banh mi shop closed down
03:28in COVID, like in the 2020 years. She's been betrayed by now.
03:33Maybe let's bump banh mi to like a nine and then sinigang. I just have fond memories of sinigang.
03:39Maybe I'm like too emotional. Actually, let's just leave this. We still need to fill in the rest of this.
03:47We need to fill in. I feel like we could just like pause her for now. I don't know.
03:51Let's put sinigang to the side. We'll put her, we'll put her to the side for a little bit.
03:54So the two Korean dishes that we have here is Pipimbap, which is like the mixed rice bowl.
04:01And then we also have Korean barbecue. Pipimbap, I feel like it's a good like entry point into Korean
04:07cuisine. And then of course you got Korean barbecue, which is like classic, quintessential family,
04:13friends, everything gathering. Korean barbecue kind of clears for me though.
04:17Cause you can get Pipimbap there too. I kind of like a Pipimbap because it's like
04:22a Korean barbecue dish in your stone pot. Meow's got a hot take. Let's hear it.
04:26Yeah, give us a hot take. Pipimbap is one of those things that you eat to clear out your fridge.
04:32So I don't crave it because that's its purpose in some ways. Cause you always have rice, right?
04:41Rice is just, that's where it originates from. But like, you just, it's like, oh,
04:46we got to use all the veggies. I think we have to throw away Pipimbap because if we all
04:51is hot today. I do think that Korean barbecue deserves that number one spot. Y'all can fight
04:56me about it later. I love hot pot more than KBBQ. I think hot pot and Korean barbecue
05:04have to be on the same level, but the same experience. Same word, different font. I love
05:11hot pot. Don't get me wrong, but everything is in a pot, which is what's great about it,
05:16but you don't get like, Are you anti-pot? Yeah. Say you get like a tomato-based soup or
05:26you just get like a pork-based soup. That is, that is your base for everything that you're
05:31making. I like the split pot. Just get a split pot. Let's do Korean barbecue hot pot. Let's
05:38put that at number one, push pho to number two and we'll return to this once we get a little
05:45bit more of our ranking filled out i hear you normally on the sushi i think 95 of sushi is
05:53terrible and over christ and most people don't actually have never actually had good sushi
06:02no no they're being gaslit yes that being said when it comes to actual michelin sushi omakase
06:11oh i was gonna say if it's a michelin experience you know you're getting good food but if you have
06:15to go to a michelin to get food that's worth it's not good to me like a lot of lids
06:20yes i agree i
06:22agree like that's common enough it's not realistic not accessible enough no yeah i think sushi in
06:28japan is actually fine yeah i think it's fine so i don't know for me personally i really do love
06:35sushi having fresh fish is just such a nice meal for me versus like ramen which i think is
06:40really heavy i feel like a big beach ball afterwards okay let's call ramen on this here too
06:48just do the noodle soups right now and just rank these because there's several i feel like a boba
06:53should have its own category because it's just like so universal just put it in melissa there boba
06:59that's rich exactly amy you can flame me for this i actually don't love beef noodle soup it's actually
07:08not something let me cook you mine girl i'm on my way right now for me personally my house to
07:15my
07:15dinner table for me to cook you want my personal beef noodle soup is better than any restaurant i have
07:21ever had it at but um i i love dim sum so much i love it i know i think
07:25what we gotta do i think we
07:27gotta move adobo down a little bit yes to make some room because i think oh yeah we still need
07:32to
07:32decide ramen they can stay where they are i think the average person would put sushi probably in like
07:41their top three asian foods seven and salad i think after yeah yeah ramen is still she can stay
07:48honestly i think beef noodle soup and ramen could be even i think they both could be 10. they're both
07:5310. okay yeah like you could even throw beef noodle soup i think the only beef noodle soup that matters
07:59is mine yeah i'm so serious right now thai food yes so we have our pad thai and our tom
08:06yum yeah if you
08:07have sinus congestion tom yum soup pulls through now who put pad thai in number nine you know she's
08:16in the top five i think i think i think pad thai is above adobo but it's definitely not higher
08:23than dim sum
08:23what's that it's like in and out burger of noodles it is dependable we like in and out burgers yes
08:33always gonna taste exactly the same across the board at every thai restaurant you can always
08:39expect it to slap oh hi meow welcome back katie's i would i would love to kick ramen off but
08:47please yes they honestly we're we're there too bring in let's bring in this is for samosas
08:54this is for india justice oh yeah it's good absolute in my opinion like
09:01yeah we can leave it's a lot of this i'm sorry like if we're talking about stuff being very non
09:07-asian
09:07palate friendly tikka masala is up is up there i will eat samosa just with chutney alone because you can't
09:13just like eat the jam it's like a spicy fruit like jam it's so dang good i can recognize i
09:18think a
09:19peeping pop's off this list i think a sinegong's off this list right i think ramen and sinegong are
09:24gone take them both out which one's going i think ramen getting off this very hot take i'm just gonna
09:32say i it is a hot take but i think i think masala is gone i don't know if samosa's
09:39like top five guys
09:41i could put it lower i guess it's a snack i think beef noodle soup's gone that's just only only
09:46works yeah only amy's worth it that's the only beef noodle soup you want so this is where we're at
09:52right now is this are we feeling good about this i'm a sushi lover but i don't love sushi more
09:59than
09:59like a lot of things on this list yes this looks good i feel comfortable with this which i think
10:06is
10:06like a good space yeah that is our top 10 goaded asian dishes that we are all happy with and
10:13content
10:13with this list and now i'm very hungry one thing that's been really great to me is like a mixed
10:18race
10:19like asian person is i feel like this is the most connected to my culture i've been and not even
10:23just
10:23being filipino like being like an asian woman because everybody is just so welcoming and i was really
10:30looking forward to this so thank you all so much for being such wonderful company and i learned a lot
10:35to be
10:35honest i professionally sort of took a break from engaging with a lot of these stories because it
10:40kind of felt difficult navigating that and feeling responsible to tell these stories but also not
10:45wanting to be pigeonholed to tell these stories as a journalist so being able to have these conversations
10:49streams like this just be able to tell these stories again and feeling really passionate about
10:52it has meant a lot to me so the fact that all three of you are here and i'm just
10:56really grateful for
10:57all of you really it falls down so hard on minorities to make it our burden to be the ones
11:05to
11:05tell our stories and to be the forefront of the ones always representing and pushing and it's exhausting
11:12you burn out so fast i i feel like it's so important that we as women and we as a
11:17minority
11:18like uplift one another and don't try to like like suffocate each other out of these spaces i feel
11:24like so exciting to see more and more welcoming spaces and more people who are like just blooming
11:29into their identities because you absolutely belong in these spaces like these are places for you to
11:34take up that space that is yours this is so sweet i'm like tearing up y'all are the best
11:38yes thank you meow amy nimligan and um yeah we'll see you next time bye everyone bye
