00:00The presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at widely attended football
00:05matches had sparked controversy earlier this year, with some concerned they may be at the
00:10FIFA World Cup.
00:12But the Trump administration has reportedly decided that ICE will not operate inside or
00:17around FIFA World Cup stadiums during next year's tournament.
00:21Acting ICE director Todd Lyons had said previously that ICE would play a, quote,
00:26key part in security operations surrounding the tournament, focusing mainly on homeland
00:31security investigations.
00:33But members of the U.S. Congress and labor unions later voiced fears that immigration enforcement
00:39raids could occur near stadiums or fan zones during the tournament.
00:45The event will jointly be hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico next summer, with more than
00:50a dozen host cities across North America.
00:54According to the co-chair of the Miami host committee, guarantees have now been given that
