00:00South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said he will not resign despite the decision to set up an impeachment committee to
00:08re-examine allegations linked to the theft of more than half a million dollars in cash from his game ranch.
00:14In a televised address, Ramaphosa said he plans to challenge the decision in court.
00:18The constitutional court judgment reinforces the principles, the rights and processes underpinning our constitutional order. This explicitly includes the right
00:29to take the report of the independent panel on review. I therefore respectfully want to make it clear that I
00:38will not resign.
00:39His comments came just hours after Parliament said it will establish the impeachment committee following a ruling by South Africa's
00:46highest court that the report should be sent for further investigation.
00:50Since a criminal complaint was laid against me in June 2022, I have consistently maintained that I have not stolen
01:01public money, committed any crime, nor violated my oath of office.
01:09From the beginning, I said that I would cooperate with all institutions that are mandated to deal with these types
01:18of matters.
01:19The constitutional court last week said that according to procedure, the 2022 independent report should have been referred to an
01:25impeachment committee for further investigation.
01:28Impeaching the leader of Africa's top economy will require the support of at least two-thirds of lawmakers in the
01:34400-member parliament, according to the constitution.
