00:01I guess the driver must have cut off the road into that gas station by Beekman's diner.
00:08It went right through the billboard, ripped over a gas pump, and never stopped moving.
00:13By now it's like a moving bonfire.
00:19Didn't know if the truck was going to explode or what.
00:25Still, you're the man screaming.
00:33This thing is just backing away from it.
00:39I looked back at the diner to see if there was anyone there who could help me.
00:46That was when I noticed that the entire place had been encircled.
00:53There wasn't a sign of life left except...
01:00By now there were no more screams.
01:04I realized that...
01:07I was alone with 50 or 60 of those things, just standing there, staring at me.
01:19I started to drive.
01:21I just plowed right through them.
01:26They didn't move.
01:27They didn't run or...
01:30Just stood there, staring at me.
01:35Just wanted to crush them.
01:42They scattered through the air like bugs.
01:48We were riding in the cemetery.
01:51Johnny and me.
01:54Johnny.
02:00We came to put a wreath on my father's grave.
02:08Johnny and...
02:11And he said...
02:13Can I have some candy?
02:15Barbara.
02:19And we didn't have any.
02:25And...
02:28Oh.
02:30It's hot in here.
02:32Hot.
02:39And he said...
02:41Oh, it's late.
02:43Why did we start so late?
02:46And I said...
02:48Johnny...
02:48If you'd gotten up earlier...
02:51We wouldn't be late.
02:54Johnny asked me if I were afraid.
02:57And I said...
02:59I'm not afraid, Johnny.
03:02And then...
03:03This man started walking up the road.
03:07He came slowly...
03:10And Johnny kept teasing me and saying...
03:12He's coming to get you, Barbara.
03:14And I laughed at him and said...
03:17Johnny, stop it.
03:19And then...
03:20Johnny ran away.
03:22And I...
03:23I went up to this man...
03:25And I was going to apologize.
03:28Why don't you just keep calm?
03:31And I looked up...
03:33And I said...
03:36And he grabbed me.
03:38And he grabbed me.
03:39He grabbed me.
03:41And he ripped at me.
03:43And he ripped at me.
03:44He held me.
03:44And he ripped at my clothes.
03:46I think you should just calm down.
03:48Oh!
03:49Oh!
03:49I screamed...
03:51Johnny!
03:52Johnny, help me!
03:53Oh, help me!
03:55And he wouldn't let me go.
03:58He ripped...
04:00And then Johnny came and he ran.
04:03And he...
04:03He fought this man.
04:05And...
04:06And...
04:07I got so afraid.
04:08I ran.
04:09I ran.
04:11I ran.
04:12I ran.
04:15And...
04:15And Johnny didn't come.
04:19We've got...
04:20We have to wait for Johnny.
04:28Nick, we better go out and get him.
04:32We have to go out and get Johnny.
04:35He's out there.
04:37Please, don't you hear me?
04:39We've got to go out and get him.
04:43Please!
04:44We have got to go get Johnny!
04:47Please help me!
04:49Please!
04:51Don't you know what's going on out there?
04:52This is no Sunday school picnic.
04:54Don't you understand?
04:55My brother is alone!
04:56Your brother is dead.
04:58No!
04:59My brother is not dead!
05:19No!
05:23No!
05:49My brother is so
06:22The murders are taking place in villages, cities, rural homes, and suburbs with no apparent pattern or reason for the
06:29slayings. It seems to be a sudden general explosion of mass homicide. We have some descriptions of the assassins. Eyewitnesses
06:36say they are ordinary-looking people. Some say they appear to be in a kind of trance. Others describe them
06:42as being...
06:52So, at this point, there is no really authentic way for us to say who or what to look for
06:57and guard yourself against. Miss-shapen monsters.
07:01The reaction of law enforcement officials is one of complete bewilderment at this hour. So far, we have been unable
07:07to determine that any kind of organized investigation is yet underway. Police, sheriff deputies, and emergency ambulances are literally deadlocked
07:15with calls for help.
07:16The scene can best be described as mayhem. Mayors of Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Miami, along with the governors of several
07:23eastern and midwestern states, have indicated the National Guard may be mobilized at any moment, but that has not happened
07:29as yet.
07:29The only advice our reporters have been able to get from official sources is for private citizens to stay in
07:36their homes behind locked doors. Do not venture outside for any reason until the nature of this crisis has been
07:42determined, and until we can advise what course of action to take.
07:45Keep listening to radio and TV for any special instructions as this crisis develops further. Thousands of office and factory
07:54workers are being urged to stay at their places of employment, not to make any attempt to get to their
07:59homes.
08:00However, in spite of this urging and warning, streets and highways are packed with frantic people trying to raise their
08:05families or apparently to flee just anywhere. To repeat, the safest course of action at this time is simply to
08:12stay where you will be.
08:32Ladies and gentlemen, we've just received word that the president has called a meeting of his cabinet to deal with
08:38the sudden epidemic of murder which has seized the eastern third of this nation.
08:41The meeting is scheduled to convene within the hour. Members of the presidential cabinet will be joined by officials of
08:47the FBI and will join chiefs behind closed doors.
08:51The White House spokesman in announcing this conference says there will be an official announcement as soon as possible following
08:57that meeting.
08:58This is the latest dispatch just received in our newsroom.
09:01Latest word also from national press services in Washington, D.C. now tells us that the emergency presidential conference, which
09:07we've just mentioned, will include high-ranking scientists from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
09:13That's the extent of this latest little topic of meeting with the president and the members of his cabinet, FBI,
09:20the joint chiefs of staff and scientists from NASA, with L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A.
09:25L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A.
09:41Reports reaching this newsroom tell of frightened people seeking refuge in churches, schools, and government buildings, demanding shelter and protection
09:49from the wholesale murder which apparently is engulfing much of the nation.
09:52Law enforcement officials are at a block to explain or even at this hour, even to theorize about the reasons
09:58for this wave of murder.
09:59So far, Mr. Price is very able to give the public his summary statements.
10:04Chief T.K. Dunmore of Camden, North Carolina, is quoted by saying, quote,
10:09Tell the people, for God's sake, to get off the streets.
10:11Tell them to go home and lock their doors and windows uptight.
10:15We don't know what kind of murder-heavy characters we have here.
10:19And, quote, he's Chief Dunmore of Camden, North Carolina.
10:23So far, the only descriptions, the only clues anyone has of the killers come from frightened witnesses of some of
10:29the slayers.
10:30These eyewitness accounts of various who describe the murderers as ordinary-looking people,
10:35misshapen monsters, people who look like they're in a trance,
10:38and things that look like people but act like animals.
10:42Some eyewitnesses tell of seeing victims who look as though they had been torn apart.
10:47This whole ghastly story began developing two days ago
10:51with a report of the slaying of a family of seven in their rural home near Gulf Park.
10:55Since then, reports of some senseless killings began snowballing in a reign of terror
11:00which has hopscotch in a dramatic, disconnected murder
11:03throughout much of the eastern and midwestern United States.
11:06Efforts to keep track of the murder reports for the placing of markers on a map
11:10seem to indicate a general spreading from the extreme southeastern United States from the north and west.
11:16Our newsmen have been on the telephone talking with officials in other cities
11:20and have determined that none of this kind of mass murder
11:23has yet been reported blasted the Mississippi River
11:25except in the extreme southeastern portion of Texas.
11:30Similar killings have been reported around the Houston and Galveston areas
11:33but nothing like...
11:34I found the gun and some bullets out there.
11:37It was only late yesterday...
11:39Oh, and these?
11:40It became clear we were facing some kind of national emergency.
11:43When first reports began filtering in, newsmen and law enforcement agencies were of the opinion...
11:48This place is boarded up pretty solid now.
11:51We ought to be all right here for a while.
11:53It was soon apparent that this was receiving more than the usual run of lawlessness.
11:57Food and the radio.
11:59...began to suspect an obscure kind of conspiracy.
12:01Sooner or later, someone's bound to come and get us out.
12:05...creatures from outer space.
12:06So again, we join with law enforcement agencies encouraging you to seek shelter in a building.
12:11Lock the doors and windows securely.
12:13Hey, that's us. We're doing all right.
12:15...cautions of any suspicious strangers.
12:17And keep tuned to your radio and television for survival instructions
12:20and further details of this continuing story.
12:23Look, I don't know if you're hearing me.
12:24...goes on in the absence of any law...
12:26But I'm going upstairs now.
12:27...it's almost as though some critical balance...
12:29If anything should try to break in here, I can hear it from up there.
12:32I'll be down to take care of it.
12:33...savage killers.
12:36Everything is all right for now.
12:38I'll be back to reinforce the windows and doors later.
12:41But you'll be all right for now, okay?
12:45Okay.
12:50Civil defense officials in Cumberland have told newsmen that murder victims
12:54show evidence of having been partially devoured by their murderers.
13:06I'll be right back to another one.
13:09...
13:20...
13:37Consistent reports from witnesses to the effect that people who acted as though they were in a kind of trance
13:42were killing and eating their victims prompted authorities to examine the bodies of some of the victims.
13:48Medical authorities in Cumberland have concluded that in all cases the killers are...
