00:00You've been involved with a lot of prestige TV over the years, but what drew you to MIA?
00:05Well, the creator, Bill Dubuque, who fans may know from Ozark, he's the guy who was behind Ozark,
00:14and my wife and I, when that show came out, we binged it,
00:18and I just think he's one of the great writers and creators in television today.
00:23And he writes great drama, he writes great action, and he writes very nuanced characters.
00:30And so they sent me the pilot, and I was in.
00:35I just thought, this is going to be a fantastic show.
00:38Right. And you got to shoot on location in Miami.
00:41What was that experience like?
00:43It was great.
00:44Miami's really a character in the show.
00:47You can't really avoid that.
00:49When you put a camera up in Miami, you're going to catch part of the city's characteristics,
00:55and we took full advantage of that.
00:58And, yeah, we were there for a couple of months and shot all over town.
01:03And Kincaid is an investigator who had to leave the Miami PD in order to make his alimony payment.
01:10Yeah.
01:10What can you tell me about his past?
01:11So, yeah, so Kincaid is an ex-Police Department homicide detective,
01:19and he basically decided to retire and become a private investigator.
01:27And when we meet him, he's basically an investigator for hire.
01:32He's hired by this woman, Caroline, to look into finding out who the murderers are of this young girl's family.
01:41And he starts out taking the job because he needs the money.
01:48But as the season progresses, we realize he's a guy who's really going to reevaluate his moral compass.
01:54What did you bring to the role of Kincaid to make it your own?
01:57How did you find his voice?
01:59So I interviewed a lot of private investigators while I was in Miami, and they were really helpful.
02:09They gave me a ton of research to work with.
02:11And I noticed the two main ones who I met with were dressed very casually, and I asked them about
02:18that.
02:19And most of them are ex-Police Department or ex-Military.
02:24And they said, Carrie, you know, we've been wearing uniforms for so long.
02:30It's so nice to have a job where we can show up dressed casually.
02:34So myself and the showrunner, Karen Campbell, decided we wanted to make Kincaid somebody who was more of a sort
02:44of a very casual, very casual look.
02:47Somebody who wore, you know, Hawaiian shirts and shorts and flip-flops.
02:52And that gave him an energy that contrasted with all the other characters in the show.
02:58One of the first juicy reveals of the season is that Kincaid is Caroline Carver's P.I.
03:03Yeah.
03:03Stay close to the investigation.
03:05Give me a price of developments, please.
03:06Is there anything in particular you want me to look into?
03:08Knowing why this case is important to you would help target my search.
03:12Clearly, this woman is not running a clean business.
03:15Yeah.
03:15How does Kincaid justify working within the gray?
03:18Um, you know, that's sort of something you're going to have to watch to find out.
03:25Yeah, he's a guy who, as I say, he starts out being a coin-operated investigator for hire.
03:32And throughout the season, he really has to rediscover his moral compass.
03:37So, yeah.
03:39And I spoke with your co-star, Marta Milans, who sang your praises.
03:43Ah, Marta.
03:44We love Marta.
03:45She also said, you like props.
03:48I love the fact that I got to work with him because he's such a prop-obsessed actor, and
03:54he makes his character so funny.
03:55What did you mean by that?
03:57Um, yeah, I do like props.
04:00It's a good point.
04:01Um, I, that's part of my studying when I went to the Lee Strasberg Institute, is one of
04:06the things they teach you is to make sure that you find some kind of grounding for your
04:11character by working within the surroundings with the props, with the set.
04:17And so that's just something I like to do.
04:19Throughout the series, it seems like Kincaid is the only person searching for the truth about
04:24Etta.
04:25What is it?
04:30I know what she's alive is.
04:34Who?
04:38Etta Tiger Jones.
04:40Is he moved by what happened with her family?
04:42I think so.
04:43I think he's very moved by what happened to her, and he had a case in the past where he
04:50was trying to help a young woman who suffered something very similar, and she ended up getting
04:58killed.
04:59So, yeah, so he's definitely feeling like he wants to redeem himself by having a case that's
05:07very similar and helping to make sure he doesn't make the same mistake again.
05:10And if there is a season two, what would you like to see for Kincaid?
05:16Well, I think that, like I said, I think the fact that we find out that he's got a moral
05:23compass, that he has redemption, that he has to follow the law and basically go back to
05:31his roots.
05:33Would you like to see him team up with Etta to take down the Rojas cartel?
05:38Oh, my gosh, well, who doesn't want to take down a cartel, right?
05:42And switching gears, you recently did a live Q&A at Netflix is a joke for The Princess Bride.
05:47Yeah.
05:48You know, what's the best part about doing these events in support of a project you
05:51care so deeply about?
05:52I'm very blessed.
05:53You know, that film is, I call it the gift that keeps on giving, Karen.
05:57You know, it's almost 40 years since we made it, if you can believe that.
06:04And, yeah, you know, I did a sold-out show for Netflix and people just love it.
06:11So I really used that opportunity to celebrate Rob Reiner, of course, and celebrate the gift
06:20of being a part of something that's much bigger than me, you know.
06:23And, of course, Robin Hood, Men in Tights is one of the greatest Mel Brooks comedies.
06:29Is it true that Kevin Costner visited the set?
06:32No.
06:33No, he didn't visit the set.
06:35Well, have your paths ever crossed during your long careers?
06:39Yeah.
06:40I met him after making the picture, and he saw it.
06:42And we met at a party, and he actually had a great sense of humor about it, actually.
06:47Yeah, yeah.
06:48And, you know, you've played such a wide array of memorable characters, good guys, bad guys,
06:54everything in between.
06:55Who has been your favorite role?
06:58My favorite role is being a dad.
07:00Yeah.
07:02Our daughter, my wife and I, our daughter is the best, best production we'll ever do.
