00:01This program documents actual homicide investigations.
00:05Criminal charges are often dropped or reduced,
00:07and all suspects shown are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
00:23We have been screaming justice for Rob Cobain.
00:28Screaming it. I'm screaming it. Justice.
00:32He was an artist. He worked, supported his kids.
00:36No criminal history whatsoever.
00:39And he's found shot and killed in his own apartment
00:42for no reason that we have been able to find.
00:45It's not just a homicide case anymore.
00:48I take it personal that this is sitting unsolved on my name.
00:54Detective Schaefer, he was passionate about this case,
00:57but he got promoted to put back on the road.
01:00So, I'm gonna pick up where he left off.
01:05He was the people of life.
01:07No matter where you saw him, he was smiling.
01:09He was always encouraging.
01:11And his biggest thing was unity.
01:14He loved music and he loved his kids.
01:17That was his life.
01:18He was a fan of all music.
01:21Kurt Cobain, that was one of his idols.
01:25And he took that moniker and thus Rob Cobain was born.
01:29He was just a phenomenal artist.
01:31But as a father and an artist, this story got cut short.
01:36He definitely did not deserve this.
01:39We're all just so heartbroken.
01:41I must be Captain Planet.
01:43I feel the Earth's pain.
01:45My little heart is damaged.
01:46Heartbroken.
01:47Heartbroken.
01:48Woo!
01:49I'm heartbroken.
01:50Heartbroken.
01:51Woo!
02:05Heartbroken.
02:09In North Charleston's Forest Hills neighborhood,
02:12the property manager of an apartment complex calls 9-1-1.
02:199-1-1, what's the address of the emergency?
02:22Lowell Drive.
02:23Somebody reported that the sliding door was shattered
02:27and I'm right outside of the window or the door.
02:31And I can see somebody's inside sitting up on the couch.
02:36His head is back and there's blood all over the place.
02:40Okay, I'm getting help on the way.
02:51Is that your apartment?
02:53No, it's the apartment.
02:54Do we know who his apartment that is?
02:55I don't believe it's the person that's in the apartment.
03:021-15 dispatchers.
03:04Fears to be a shooting.
03:05I'm clearing the apartment.
03:07North Charleston Police Department!
03:14AEMS, you guys are clear.
03:18Check on him.
03:23I got a pulse.
03:25Sorry.
03:26Okay.
03:271-15 dispatch.
03:29This is going to be confirmed.
03:2910-7.
03:31All right, copy.
03:32Detectives are en route.
03:442-30.
03:452-30.
03:452-30.
03:45All right.
03:462-30.
03:472-30.
03:47The tape's off here.
03:532-30.
03:582-30.
03:592-30.
04:01This next door neighbor at 5 a.m. heard two bangs.
04:06Two loud bangs.
04:06She thought it was a car accident or whatever.
04:09Around 10-ish.
04:10She noticed the glass was shattered.
04:13And then at that point, she called for the maintenance.
04:16When the maintenance man spotted the victim, he contacted the property manager, who called 9-1-1.
04:22Robert Brown.
04:23That's what the mail on the floor in there says.
04:26And that looks like.
04:3140-year-old Robert Brown III, known by his stage name, Rob Cobain, was a local hip-hop artist who
04:38also worked at a jewelry store.
04:41Recently divorced, he had a 9-year-old son with his ex-wife and a 13-year-old daughter from
04:46a previous relationship.
04:54The front door was locked when I got here, dead bolting.
04:56I made entry through this hole right here.
04:58If the wares were open on the side, that was like that when we got here.
05:14Rob was shot four times.
05:17In the back, legs, and ankle.
05:22He's using his underwear.
05:25Was this a PS4?
05:29They were maybe playing the game.
05:33Oh, there you go right there.
05:35So, one shell casing.
05:37The team finds a shell casing on the living room floor.
05:42There's everyone back there, too.
05:45Another one behind the couch.
05:47Facing.
05:49And one in the front hallway.
05:56Whoever it was, he was very close when they started shooting him.
06:00There's blood all over there.
06:02There clearly was a scuffle at the door.
06:05Guesses that him and someone else were fighting, and that's when the shots started going off.
06:09Maybe he's trying to flee.
06:11Could have been shooting at him and put one through the glass.
06:14And then from there, he had collapsed right in front of the couch.
06:20There's a bag of weed.
06:24His phone is in his back bedroom.
06:29The original responding officer said he noticed that the front door was bolt locked.
06:34The window was open.
06:35I'm thinking that's how they went in.
06:37Could be.
06:38Not impossible.
06:40There's a possibility this was just a random burglary gone wrong.
06:45My personal opinion, somebody else was let in the house.
06:49Maybe a possible girlfriend involved or something, because he's in his underwear in there.
06:56And I don't think he would have been, like, hanging out with one of his buddies or another dude in
06:59there, like, half-naked or whatever.
07:03Right now, we have to canvas for video.
07:06Hopefully get lucky, because right now we don't have a lot to go off of.
07:11It's gonna be a tough one.
07:19Can I ask you a question real quick?
07:21Did you hear anything earlier this morning?
07:22Any shouting, arguing, or anything like that?
07:24Mm-hmm.
07:25Okay.
07:26All right, well, I appreciate you guys.
07:29Has anybody already talked to you?
07:31Okay.
07:36Everybody must be at work.
07:41Then...
07:42Okay.
07:44One of Rob's neighbors comes forward.
07:46His ex-wife know that they just got recently divorced.
07:50He has two kids from Germany, and then he has an autistic son.
07:55Okay.
07:56Did they live there?
07:57Sometimes.
07:58Rob's car was broken down, so his daughter has been staying with his ex-wife so she could get a
08:03ride to school.
08:05And you don't know him to have any drama or beef with anybody like that?
08:08Mm-mm.
08:09He did live with these two individuals.
08:11They lived in his daughter's room.
08:13What did those two people name that he would live with before?
08:17I have nothing.
08:18They're just a girl and then a man.
08:20Black, most black.
08:21Okay.
08:22He did kick him out.
08:24When was that that he kicked him out?
08:26Two and a half of my son.
08:28Okay.
08:38Two hours in.
08:40A neighbor's next door.
08:41Made a call to her, so she came over here to give us a little bit more information.
08:46Okay.
08:47Another friend of Rob's arrives on scene.
08:49Hello.
08:50I'm Detective Shaffer.
08:51My name is Shaginish.
08:53So what's your relationship to Robert?
08:56We're friends.
08:57Okay.
08:58Has there been any drama recently in the house over there?
09:01Like arguments between people, fights, anything like that?
09:04No.
09:04That's why we were trying to figure out because he honestly, he's not that type of person.
09:08Right.
09:08He's really a happy-go-lucky guy.
09:10Mm.
09:11So...
09:12How's the relationship with the ex-wife?
09:13Is everything good?
09:14Yeah, they're fine.
09:15They recently just signed their papers.
09:17Okay.
09:18But it wasn't a heated divorce.
09:19It wasn't bad.
09:20Do you know him to be involved in anything bad like drug dealing or anything like that?
09:24Narcotics?
09:25Anything to that extent?
09:26No.
09:27He smoked a little weed.
09:28Okay.
09:31What about friend-wise?
09:32Who else would Rob hang out with?
09:34He was a ladies man.
09:35He hung out with different girls.
09:38He just had been going through some things, you know?
09:41Going through a new divorce.
09:42Yeah.
09:42Trying to figure it out.
09:44Okay.
09:45This summer, he allowed people to live with him.
09:48She gives to Schaefer the names of Rob's former roommates.
09:51Did everything work out when they got moved out or was it like a bad move out?
09:55It wasn't that good.
09:57It wasn't that good?
09:57No.
09:58Okay.
10:01This is wild.
10:02No.
10:02No.
10:02I know it's a lot for everybody.
10:05Thank you, man.
10:15As word of Rob's murder continues to spread.
10:18He works here.
10:19He's my watchmaker.
10:20He fixed his watches for me.
10:23The manager of the jewelry store where he worked shows up on scene.
10:36She says, last night, a woman picked Rob up from work.
10:44What kind of car they left in?
10:47I don't know.
10:50So he left last night from work for the girl.
10:55But that's the last time she saw him.
10:59Then...
10:59You see that camera that's in the living room?
11:01Another possible break.
11:05Rob's neighbors remember that he has a security camera in his living room.
11:09Okay, let me go check that out.
11:11Give me one second.
11:17If that ring camera was on during the whole incident and just recording things,
11:21which would tell us exactly what happened and who did it, that would be huge.
11:35The camera's on because he's getting ring notifications on his phone.
11:40So we have high hopes for that.
11:48We're hoping it's been on since this morning, which means that it just would have been activating whatever happened inside.
11:53That's where the man needed to be a quarterback.
11:58It's going to be a Mahatman.
12:00It's going to be a helping user.
12:03It should be a problem.
12:04George Robert Vantine Jr.
12:05My name is George Robert Vantine Jr.
12:07I have been with the North Charleston Police Department for 23 years.
12:12I spent just shy of five years in the person's unit working violent crime and homicides
12:20I'm honored with working in cold cases now the department set up this unit to help bring justice
12:26to the victims and the families where the case agent has moved on they've either been transferred
12:31out or they retired and the case still isn't solved detective Schaefer is transferred back
12:38to the road so we're gonna continue looking into Lowell Drive and pick up where he left off it looks
12:44like in the report when Schaefer left the crime scene that night his head was spinning probably
12:53had half a dozen potential motives it could be a burglary gone bad because there is a window
13:00partially opened there's been indications that he is a ladies man he's in his underwear so it could
13:09be something with a lover's quarrel the ex-roommate may have been involved there was some type of
13:16argument and then there is a female that picked him up from work and it was the last person to
13:23see
13:23him once Schaefer's goes home even the ship starts running with it trying to get into the victim's
13:30phone maybe there's some indication of who that female that picked him up from work may be
13:57and found a text conversation between Rob and the woman who picked him up from work last night Amanda
14:03who picked him up get her in here see what she knows two hours later Amanda agrees to talk
14:35I sent my husband over there after he cut off work okay all right so you saw him yesterday correct
14:43yeah I picked him up from work yesterday it was about 10 till 6 and we went to the public's
14:50to get a
14:57sandwich and once you guys were there what happened uh we smoked for a little bit and we watched you
15:04on TV raps and we ate our sandwich then we smoked some more I don't know like why her husband
15:12would
15:12think it'd be cool if she goes to some other dude's house and smokes weed with him is he like
15:17jealous of
15:18their relationship it's weird and I took off about 9 30 he walked me outside we didn't spend too much
15:29time outside because it was cool he said I love you the last that I heard from him was last
15:36night when
15:36I told him I'm home and he responded the little hard thing and roughly how long is the drive about
15:42an
15:42hour okay and did he mention having any plans afterwards no I think he was gonna go to bed we
15:51had
15:51to work today how did the two of you meet and how long have you known him since April of
15:582016 in
15:59Northwood small she says she and Rob have been friends for eight years we had a conversation about
16:05friends the singer and uh we've just been friends ever since
16:17have you and Rob ever had like a sexual relationship
16:22so it's just friends okay is he um he's pretty cool with your husband oh yeah absolutely
16:36what was Rob wearing when you saw him last night um I think it was a black long sleeve just
16:44shirt that
16:45he had on jeans and do you know what his relationship was like with the guy that used to live
17:10with him
17:12no but he was there for quite a while with his girlfriend so what happened I don't know honestly
17:19Rob just referred to them as house guests and I didn't ask too many questions the only thing that
17:26Rob seemed to be stressed out about is his neighbor smelling the weed and we did talk about that because
17:34he
17:34had his uh he propped his sliding glass door open a little bit so it would air out do you
17:40know if Rob
17:40kept that door open after you left probably it made me nervous because he didn't lock things that being
17:47one of them mm-hmm you tell me that this isn't true right I'm sorry for your loss one more
18:00second
18:07does sound like her and the victim had a good friendship I think she says that her husband was cool
18:15with it um we do plan on following up with the husband just to make sure that there wasn't any
18:20type of jealousy on his end
18:30from glancing at this Schaefer did talk to Amanda's husband and it seemed like he was okay with his wife
18:38going over there that he knew the victim and he didn't have any issues with him he did not feel
18:44the
18:44husband was involved so after the shift ended they were no closer to a motive behind this
18:51according to witnesses Rob was a ladies man so Schaefer's plan was to track down the women he was
18:57seeing and track down the couple that used to live with the victim and he also wanted access to the
19:06footage on the phone a ring camera that was inside the victim's home that may have the possible suspect
19:11which would have been huge the next morning detective Parker Bush and Schaefer head out to try to find some
19:32of the women that Rob had been seeing could still be a chick sleep around with different women some chick
19:38could not like it well that and then one of their significant other parts yeah and shows up there at
19:44the door going hey can I talk to you and things go south then hey sir how are you the
19:57team gets a tip
20:01from Robert Brown's female ex-roommate she says she suspects her ex-boyfriend was Rob's other ex-roommate
20:15maybe he's a killer okay all right well I appreciate it all right take it easy
20:27same boyfriend did it
20:38this chick has to say
20:50hey how are you what happened I was introduced to Rob in July of this year me and my boyfriend
20:58were homeless together and we stayed at his apartment they knew each other from being rappers
21:03okay um while we were there she says while they were living with Rob she and her boyfriend weren't
21:11getting along how did it end with y'all and Rob and staying at his apartment Rob texted me and
21:20said
21:20hey y'all journey will be back Rob asked them to leave because his daughter was coming back to live
21:26with him I left him and shortly after they moved out she and her boyfriend broke up what makes you
21:34think he was be the one involved was there bad things between him and Rob when they were living
21:37there or we were homeless at the point that I left him he had nowhere else to go so I'm
21:42assuming he did
21:43go to Rob's house at some point I can't confirm that okay my woman's intuition is telling me
21:51if he didn't do this he knows who did right right okay what my intuition is telling me okay
21:58he's been contacting me off of crazy different numbers the first number was 472
22:10okay we're gonna continue investigating and go from there we have to go based off where the evidence
22:14takes us I know you said your intuition but I know I know yeah
22:20Rob did not deserve that he was a sweet guy he did not deserve that now 100%
22:28thank you for your time ma'am
22:38it was basically woman's intuition that the ex-roommate may have been involved but detective
22:45Schaefer did a search warrant on the ex-roommate's phone and during the time frame of the murder that
22:53person's device was in Florence South Carolina and I believe Schaefer spoke to that person on the phone
22:59he was very cooperative so I think he ruled him out
23:06detective Schaefer in his notes and what he told me seems like everyone he talked to whether it be
23:11girlfriends maybe I spoke very highly of the victim and he got the sense that no one in the victim's
23:19social circle wanted to harm the victim and everyone was baffled as to who would do this
23:28Schaefer hit a dead end and so they had the hell mary of the ring camera that was inside the
23:34victim's
23:34home that would potentially give us some glimpse of who did it
23:47as the first 48 slips away camera covers the living room Schaefer gets an update on
23:55the security camera in Rob's living room but the ring camera that was in there the plan is unactive
24:02which means it'll give you notifications and alerts but it doesn't record any of it there's live view
24:09only so there's no video of the actual shooting nope oh can't get freaking lucky on none of it
24:18hmm maybe square one on that felt too good to be true so yeah things are going well everything's
24:28coming together nicely and I mean that with the most sarcastic possible
24:45six days later number one I'm so sorry this is the worst way to meet someone like I said in
24:51such a
24:51situation Schaefer speaks to Rob's mother he didn't deserve what he got because the type of person
25:00that he was before I leave South Carolina yes to go home with some kind of closure yes just leaving
25:08my
25:08child I want to help and tell you as much as I can but it is ongoing so there's a
25:13lot I can't tell
25:14you right now what I can tell you is this there's two possibilities it was either a random burglary gone
25:20wrong or it was someone he knew the team turns to Rob's ex-wife and daughter
25:45what's your name are you in your system did your dad ever um mention that his house got broken into
25:54previously so tell me about that he told me someone had to give like his pocket money because he could
26:02keep like fifty dollars in his pocket and he said it like on the tv stand okay and did he
26:09tell you how
26:10he thought the person was able to get inside
26:27that shit like what time of day did it happen when you just leave so nighttime yeah like close to
26:35like
26:35three or four he did get his stuff broken into a couple weeks ago
26:56and then I don't really see there's no calls for service over there so if he did he never reported
27:03it to us that's interesting we'll have to chase that down too they're just going to keep talking
27:08to more and more people we're hoping to get a bunch of video from the surrounding streets and
27:13surrounding areas hoping that somebody's camera somewhere caught someone running from the scene
27:19that we could track or someone jumping in a car right afterwards yeah we just need to get something
27:35four days later that food line has left the parking lot the team watches surveillance video from the
27:42grocery store next to rob's apartment complex the victim's building is right here
27:49and right there is like right by where the window's at when you like some video of somebody running from
27:54the scene or some
27:56otherwise that's like a date line special
28:01so far not a lot of luck
28:05then
28:09where the green thing is at a thermal image of somebody coming around from the back side of the
28:14victim's building at 4 15 in the morning right before the shooting we think the murder time is around like
28:215 a.m but this is about 55 minutes before that this figure is just wandering around
28:31very suspicious to me because he's not going into an apartment he's not walking a dog
28:38he's just wandering around behind buildings in the middle of the night
28:41i think the temperature that night was like 40 degrees or less so it was cold as hell out
28:46and you're wandering around at four o'clock in the morning so my curiosity is why are you doing that
28:55you're looking to break into somewhere that's what i was kind of getting a feel for like are they
29:00looking for open windows and the homicide he did have his window left open and his mother said that
29:07he did get broken into a couple weeks ago
29:20i don't see him again
29:29and then
29:31this video we're getting is from right about here
29:34shafer pulls up doorbell footage they got from a neighbor down the street from rob's apartment
29:40this is at 5 12 a.m minutes after we believe the homicide occurred of an individual walking down the
29:47street
29:53lull drive which is where the homicide occurred this could potentially be the same person
29:59from the video walking behind the apartment building
30:03this guy is a potential suspect
30:06i wish we had a post-mortem up at him but he's our best lead so far you could say
30:18it's possible that it was a burglar gone wrong just laying down if someone was trying to break in
30:22yeah
30:30three weeks later
30:31hey casein yes sir detectives casein alex and carlos ochoja are working a case that they believe
30:39could be connected to rob's so i have a rash of burglaries in the forest hills area um and
30:48that's the same area where the homicide was the most recent burglary occurred around 10 o'clock last
30:54night he went into the window of their house by everybody inside out and just stole all their stuff
31:00um the emma was that the same for this kid i dealt with him before
31:04um where he likes to break into people's houses while people are home alex realized the mo of
31:10last night's robbery matched that of a juvenile burglar that he arrested three months ago
31:15he's a 15 year old on locked doors and windows that's where he goes to the case i arrested him
31:21for back in september he broke in the house one of the roommates came home for front of him he
31:26pulled
31:26a gun out on them when me and uh other detectives wanted to go pick him up he tried to
31:30pull a gun out
31:31on us but we were able to stop him before he was able to do it charges against the juvenile
31:36for the
31:36burglary three months ago were dismissed so he may be committed into the homicide because of the mo is
31:43just the same the juvenile suspect was definitely on the tree at the time rob's murder happened
32:00so did she see the guy who broke it no the victim of last night's burglary was in her bedroom
32:06when
32:06it happened so then this morning a neighbor gives her a video footage you see two black males
32:22i'm pretty sure it's taken out where they can break in out of that video that she sees she identifies
32:28the
32:28juvenile the burglary victim recognized one of the suspects in the video from the neighborhood
32:34he's the same juvenile that detective alex arrested for the previous burglary so we think this may be
32:41our suspect from the homicide it's possible the fact that he was willing to pull a gun out on three
32:48officers in uniform the fact that he actually did pull a gun out on my other victim and threaten her
32:55i feel he could he could escalate that point especially if he's inside my house breaking in there
33:00and they catch him i wouldn't be surprised he'll do something like that unfortunately we don't have
33:07enough to arrest him for this burglary so the goal right now is to work on building the burglary case
33:16for those two we're gonna follow the victim we're gonna go out to her house we'll start going around
33:20the neighborhood canvassing for video and then when we can get enough to charge them with the burglary we
33:25can pick them up and while they're up here talk to them about the homicide
33:33detective schaefer in his notes and what he told me he wasn't able to develop enough probable cause
33:40or enough evidence for that one particular burglar to charge him and then schaefer was beginning the
33:47process of being promoted out of the unit six months after schaefer left the unit the property
33:55detectives detective case and ended up charging that juvenile suspect with yet another burglary
34:04when detective case and went to apprehend that juvenile suspect he had a backpack just like the
34:12suspect that is on camera walking back towards his residence minutes after the homicide so it that
34:20is a strong person of interest so we needed to somehow find some way to convince him to come to
34:27city hall
34:28to put him in a room then interview him
34:53so i'm gonna try to interview him and see what he says see if we can get him to admit
34:56to this
34:58hey how's it going i'm detective vantine so you're looking to get some items back you're talking about
35:05like a backpack you're talking about a phone it's an iphone 14. okay apple iphone was seized and then
35:12you said you're it's a black backpack i got you do is that how long you had that backpack for
35:17uh we had some burglaries in the area and i'm wondering if um hey i'll show you a picture if
35:27you
35:27ever hit this place or remember it
35:35i know what is that yeah december 3rd early in the morning 2024 this place was broken into
35:47this window is open this was shattered
35:56the thing is i think you do you would go into like different places right and so i'm asking about
36:06this particular one get it off your chest what happened
36:09nothing i'm being so honest i don't have no idea about this let me ask you this when you did
36:16these
36:16break-ins did you have someone with you yeah i always have my friends i don't steal we don't steal
36:22what do you do we just go in the chair how do you get in usually though from the bed
36:27or the window
36:29you always go through like a window yeah but you have me in law or something like that
36:36this window is open you ever go through this window and chill
36:49oh you know who house this is
36:53have you ever gone to a place where somebody lives while they're in there no
36:58that's dumb yeah well not not knowing they're in there no i'm not that slow nor stupid when you go
37:08and to chill in these houses you usually have a weapon on you no i don't carry weapons
37:13you were arrested with guns in the past that was only because i found it and i just started to
37:19use it
37:20for protection right i was doing it for the funny for the looks well i wouldn't do no with it
37:26put my
37:27right hand on the bobber right now i'm on my on my like i don't know nothing about that
37:33with me i just came here to get my stuff
37:36the phone do you know the passcode to that phone yeah i think it's he gives vantine the passcode
37:43i'm going to be honest with you i won't be able to release it today that's for sure
37:46i just came here to get my stuff and i need to get my stuff and i'm like well i
37:51got you i feel you
37:54yeah you're good
38:04just denying denying he mentioned that he did usually go through the windows and this is entry through a
38:11window unsecured but i just don't have enough to say i don't have any dna
38:16putting him there i don't have any video putting him there i got the passcode to his phone so we
38:21can do the phone dump so maybe there's something in the text message that will either rule him out or
38:26rule him in
38:33the burglary suspect that we just interviewed we didn't dump his phone unfortunately there's nothing
38:38to prove that he committed this crime but he is still a strong person of interest as far as the
38:45community maybe somebody knows something and they he confided in somebody maybe someone has some crucial
38:50information that will help solve it i know this suspect commits burglaries with other juveniles maybe
38:58they will cooperate and they'll be able to come forward i think the thing is trying to never never
39:05giving up and just hoping that something will break
39:17unsolved cases are never close
39:23i'm gonna do everything in my power to figure out who did this rob's life was taken thank you
39:30and so i feel it's important to let the family know we are still actively trying to solve it
39:37i remember him he was a nice guy to me yeah if it's been over a year or two years
39:44or three or
39:4510 or whatever the case is we're never going to give up hope we're never going to stop trying
39:49i'm never going to quit on it never
40:01he made people laugh just by stepping in the room
40:05he was just that silly
40:09just proud of him you know never had nothing bad to say about my nephew
40:14i just can't wrap my mind around why somebody do that yeah
40:20whoever did it they took something away from me that could never be replaced they took a daddy away
40:27from his kids it's been a struggle
40:38with kingston he doesn't understand
40:42so he asked for him and i can't really explain why he's not there
40:49with journey it's a different type of difficulty because she knows
40:54she's angry and upset because somebody took something so valuable away from her from all of us
41:04and i want to be able to look at the person in their eyes and ask them why
41:16father god we gather today in honor of robert hoping that this will bring justice
41:24somebody knows exactly what happened and i pray that their conscience will allow them to tell somebody
41:33so that we'll know who did it and why put yourself in our shoes what if it was your family
41:39member
41:40and you know somebody know wouldn't you want them to say it
41:45it will help a lot please and thank you whoever you are i know you know something
