01:56He was quick in practice, he was disappointed with qualifying
02:00And he starts in the fast six
02:03Pata Award is searching for momentum before the Indy 500 begins in earnest

02:13Still looking for their first victory of the season
02:16At the place where expectations are always sky high

17:18Motor Speedway, but before the Indy 500, the greatest spectacle in racing, first, the Sancio Grand Prix on the Indy
17:27Road Course, and that is what we are here this afternoon to enjoy.
17:31Welcome, folks, welcome to Indianapolis. Welcome to Indianapolis with me, Will Bucks and James Hinchcliffe and James Hinchcliffe and Alex
17:35Pillow, the championship leader and four-time champion, will be starting this race from pole as he has the previous
17:41two seasons. Now, in the previous two seasons, he won this race from pole, and if he's to do so
17:45again today, he would be the first man in history to achieve that at the same circuit three years in
17:52a row. Quite the record it would be. Townsend, some drivers out there, though, have it all to do today.
17:57Yeah, listen, if you want to know how challenging this sport is right now, look no further than the fastest
18:02man in the history of IndyCar. I'm talking about Will Power, a 71-time pole sitter, a winner here on
18:08the road course and the Indy 500. Those crazy eyes lead to so much speed, but today he starts 25th.
18:17That is dead last. Are you kidding me? Will Power laughed. I talked to him about an hour ago. He
18:23said, guys, it's just that hard.
18:24I don't know exactly what to blame it on. I'm just the slowest guy in qualifying. Hinch, a lot of
18:29competition through the field today.
18:30A lot of competition and a lot of reasons to want to be quick here today because momentum in May
18:35is a real thing. A few drivers have swept the month of May, starting with Will Power. That was back
18:40in 2018.
18:41Took the GP before that Indy 500 win in those famous eyes. Next year, his teammate, he did the hat
18:46trick. Simon Pagina won the GP, the pole for the 500, and then the race.
18:50And then we've got Alex Pillow, who did it last year. Guys, I've got experience doing this. My best GP
18:55led to my best qualifying in the 500, led to my best race.
18:59Momentum is real, but it's got to start here today.
19:01And there is the car of Alex Pillow, our four-time champion for Chip Ganassi Racing.
19:07And let me tell you, folks, Chip Ganassi knows how to pick racers, knows how to pick champions.

24:59Guys, what's fascinating for me are that the drivers starting immediately behind him.
25:03Pato Award and Felix Rosenquist are going on the offensive earlier.
25:06They are starting this race on the soft tire, which could be a huge advantage with that increase in grip
25:12and pace in the early laps.
25:15Why don't we take a look, though, at this Indy road circuit.
25:18So complex, tight, twisting, and very challenging.
25:22Undeniably the smoothest road course on the schedule.
25:25This place is billiard top smooth, and it is fast.
25:29Down the long front straightaway.
25:30They'll hit 185 miles an hour in the draft.
25:33On push to pass and hard onto the brakes into turn one.
25:36All the way down to first gear as you wind through to the backside.
25:39Turn four.
25:40Very tricky on the brakes to keep the car balanced.
25:43And then through the fast chicane of five and six.
25:45And a great passing opportunity here, James.
25:47Great passing opportunity into 780 mile an hour maximum speed when you head into the S's.
25:52Seven through ten.
25:54You're going to see all sorts of curb riding, some side-by-side action.
25:56But it's important to get a good run out of ten because you're flat out through eleven
26:00as you briefly go back up onto the short shoot of the oval for another passing opportunity.
26:04Hard on the brakes into twelve.
26:06Cut back in.
26:07Low speed.
26:08Minimum sixty-six out of thirteen.
26:10And then it's all on the throttle, Townsend, through fourteen and down.
26:13That famous front straight going the wrong direction if you're used to seeing the Indy 500.

26:53Remember his famous father, Bobby, won here on the Oval in the Indy 500 40 years ago.
26:58It's been nine years since Graham won for the last time.
27:01One of his six IndyCar wins.
27:02But he has nine podiums since then.
27:04Might get another one here today.

27:06It has been a huge couple weeks for Felix Rosenquist.
27:09A pole position and a podium finish for that team in Long Beach.
27:13And then just a few days ago they welcomed their beautiful baby girl Stella on May 4th to the world.
27:19He said it's back to work pretty early and they have found their flow.
27:23He's going to start off third today.
27:25But guys, I'm thinking that an early Mother's Day present for a win of Felix Rosenquist would be a pretty
27:30good present to me.

27:31Thanks, G. My driver to watch today, the 26th of willpower.
27:36Just to put into context how out of position he is right now in his starting place.
27:41Six pole positions here, five wins, nine podiums.
27:45And honestly, two of those podiums were in the last two races that were at this track.
27:49If there's a hard charger in this series, it's willpower.
27:53Expect him to go forward today.
27:54I like the look of Patel Award in second.
27:57I like the look of Christian Lundgaard in fourth.
28:00So many overtaking moves for Christian Lundgaard this season.
28:03I like the look of David Lucus in fifth as well.
28:06Yet to win a race in IndyCar.
28:07The highest starting and highest placed Penske driver in the championship this year.
28:11He had personally made a decision in qualifying in that third segment.
28:15The Firestone Fast 6 didn't go to a new set of those soft red sidewall alternate Firestone tires.
28:21That's going to give him more strategy options as we get further into this race.
28:24But critically, no warm up.
28:26None of these drivers know exactly where the tires are going to be because of that rain yesterday.
28:31Qualifying pushed to today.
28:32So huge mystery for the entire field.
28:36Rem Rahal told us, I don't think the rears are going to last for anybody.
28:39So he thinks he's with an advantage having that extra set of soft tires.
28:44If you ride on board the fifth third car right there.
28:46We are expecting a three stop race for fuel today.
28:50How will the tire strategy play out?
28:52Could it all come down to the start?

32:39I think he clattered into the back of Rasmussen.
32:42A bit of damage to Rasmussen's nose as well.

32:52You could just see something stuck underneath the front of that car.

33:01And it's not the whole front wing.
33:03Because you do look and hold your hands over your eyes.
33:07When you see front wings dislodged and loose.
33:09And cars running at speed.
33:11Because the last thing you want is it to come off and get underneath the front of the car.
33:16You eventually have no steering.
33:19But they're desperate to try and not lose too much time here.
33:25But they're going to have to come back into pit lane.
33:28Or come into pit lane I should say.
33:30Because that bit of body work is dangerous.
33:33Will not be allowed by race control to continue.
33:37So expect the PNC bank machine of Scott Dixon to get into pit lane this time around.

38:45Well used to be in the IndyCar series.
38:47That push to pass was inactive for the first lap of the start.
38:50Initially and also of restarts.

38:55It is active as soon as they come to the green flag.
38:58That's going to make it much harder.
39:00Townsend for the drivers to kind of manage that push to pass over a stint.
39:03Because you know that every driver is going to be on the button trying to make moves on this start.
39:07It's also going to make the cars faster than they've been over the last several years here.
39:12You might see three or four miles an hour.
