00:00Trusting in God is not just about believing He can do something.
00:05It's about resting on the fact that God is in control
00:10even when everything else feels out of control.
00:17Holding your peace is the outward evidence of an inward trust.
00:24Remaining calm is to recognize that whilst the battle is real,
00:31the victory belongs to the Lord.
00:39Greetings to the Church of God all around the world.
00:43Greetings to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus.
00:49Grace and peace to you all in the name of Jesus.
00:53The time for the living Word of God has come.
00:59I want you to tell your neighbor, if you are there with someone,
01:05it is the time for God's Word, so don't distract me.
01:11And if you are alone, say it to yourself.
01:14The time for the Word of God has come, so don't be distracted.
01:20Remember, your full attention is required.
01:27Because as we study the Word of God,
01:31as we take it into our hearts,
01:34and we act on it,
01:37our minds are being renewed.
01:40And we are being transformed.
01:43Thank you, Jesus Christ.
01:46Recently, people of God,
01:49I was reflecting about some critical moments
01:54in my journey of faith with the Lord.
01:58I was recalling some of these moments
02:02where I found myself at a point
02:06where I could not see anything on my horizon
02:11regarding what would come next.
02:15Those moments where there was so much difficulty
02:19that it seemed as if there was no solution,
02:25no future.
02:26And, of course, I was very, very thankful
02:31and amazed at how God has seen me through,
02:37how His mercy rescued me
02:40from those dark moments
02:43as I trusted in Him.
02:46Yes, as I trusted in Him,
02:49because it was that trust in the Lord,
02:53in who He is,
02:55in His faithfulness,
02:57in His providence,
02:59that enabled me to persevere,
03:02because without Him,
03:04I would have not made it this far.
03:07So all glory be to God.
03:10And in the midst of this reflection,
03:14a question arose.
03:17What does trust in the Lord really look like?
03:22What does trust in God practically look like?
03:28In other words,
03:31how do I know that I truly trust in God?
03:36We cannot deny people of God
03:41that in this life
03:43there are distressing
03:45and overwhelming situations.
03:48But we should not allow these situations
03:51to distress or overwhelm our hearts.
03:56As Christians,
03:58we must be aware
04:00that challenges are part of life
04:04and although we have trusted in God
04:09in the past,
04:12that does not exempt us
04:14from having to trust totally in Him
04:19in the present
04:20and in the challenges that lie ahead.
04:26So with today's reflection,
04:29I would like to give a practical answer
04:32to that question.
04:34What does trust in God really look like?
04:38And to do so, people of God,
04:41we are going to take our proof text
04:46from a very well-known story in the Bible
04:51in the book of Exodus chapter 14.
04:57Here, the people of Israel
05:00had just left Egypt
05:02and they found themselves trapped
05:05between the Red Sea in front of them
05:09and the Egyptians behind.
05:12This was a situation in which,
05:15naturally speaking,
05:17there was no way out.
05:19So we are going to read Exodus 14
05:23from verse 9 to 15.
05:27And the Bible says,
05:29So the Egyptians pursued them,
05:33all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh,
05:37his horsemen and his army,
05:40and overtook them camping by the sea
05:44beside Pi-ha-hiroth before Baal-Sephon.
05:50Verse 10.
05:51And when Pharaoh drew near,
05:54the children of Israel lifted their eyes,
05:57and behold,
05:58the Egyptians marched after them.
06:02So they were very afraid,
06:04and the children of Israel
06:06cried out to the Lord.
06:08Then they said to Moses,
06:11Because there were no graves in Egypt,
06:15have you taken us away to die
06:18in the wilderness?
06:20Why have you so dealt with us
06:23to bring us up out of Egypt?
06:27Is this not the word
06:29that we told you in Egypt,
06:31saying,
06:32Let us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?
06:36For it would have been better for us
06:39to serve the Egyptians
06:40than that we should die in the wilderness.
06:44Verse 13.
06:47And Moses said to the people,
06:49Do not be afraid.
06:51Stand still and see the salvation of the Lord,
06:55which he will accomplish for you today.
06:59For the Egyptians whom you see today,
07:03you shall see again no more forever.
07:07Verse 14.
07:09The Lord will fight for you,
07:11and you shall hold your peace.
07:14And the Lord said to Moses,
07:17Why do you cry to me?
07:19Tell the children of Israel to go forward.
07:25And we all know
07:27the miraculous end of this account.
07:30The people of Israel crossed the Red Sea
07:35on dry ground,
07:36and the Lord manifested himself
07:39in such a powerful and amazing way
07:43as he defeated the Egyptian army.
07:47This Bible story provides us
07:51with so many practical lessons
07:54for our life as Christians.
07:57But today I want us to focus
08:00on the divine instruction
08:03given in verse 14.
08:06And I read it again.
08:08The Lord will fight for you,
08:12The Lord will fight for you,
08:12and you shall hold your peace.
08:16In the New International Version says,
08:20The Lord will fight for you,
08:23you need only to be still.
08:26And the Amplified Bible says it
08:30even clearer.
08:43Why were they instructed
08:46to hold their peace?
08:49To keep silent and remain calm?
08:54If we go back to verse 10,
08:57we read that
09:00when the people of Israel
09:02lifted their eyes,
09:04they saw the Egyptians
09:06marching after them.
09:09And the Bible says
09:11that they were very afraid.
09:13And then they cry out to the Lord.
09:17However,
09:18in the following verses,
09:20we read
09:21that they started
09:24to complain to Moses.
09:27They began
09:28to blame Moses.
09:31They began to doubt
09:33whether or not
09:35they had done
09:37the right thing
09:38in leaving Egypt,
09:41forgetting
09:42that they were there
09:44as part of God's
09:46sovereign plan.
09:48They began
09:49to recall their past
09:52and even thought
09:55that the slavery
09:57they had lived in
09:59might have been better
10:01than the calamity
10:03they were facing.
10:05Unfortunately,
10:07their attitude,
10:09though they cried out
10:11to the Lord,
10:12was driven by fear
10:16and the confusion
10:18of the turmoil
10:20of the moment.
10:22When the Bible says
10:24that they were very afraid
10:26and they cried out
10:28to the Lord,
10:31at that point,
10:33it suggests
10:34that they were doing
10:36the right thing.
10:40although the immediate
10:42answer
10:42or reaction
10:43was panic,
10:45which is a
10:46natural
10:47human response
10:49to
10:49seemingly
10:51impossible
10:51situations,
10:53they cried out
10:54to the Lord.
10:56But as we read,
10:58they started
11:00to complain.
11:02So brothers
11:03and sisters,
11:06how many of us
11:08have behaved
11:10like the Israelites
11:11when we found
11:14ourselves
11:14in difficult
11:16and overwhelming
11:18situations?
11:20We may cry out
11:22to the Lord,
11:23but it's common
11:24to do so
11:26with a cry
11:28born out of fear
11:30and despair,
11:32not trust
11:33and faith.
11:36And this
11:37is also revealed
11:39by our attitude
11:41after we pray,
11:44after we cried
11:45out to the Lord.
11:47We look
11:48for someone
11:48to blame.
11:50We start
11:51to complain,
11:54to lament,
11:55to grumble.
11:57We start
11:58to take offense
12:00and become
12:01bitter.
12:04We start
12:06to dwell
12:07in the pain
12:08of the past
12:10and even long
12:12to return
12:13to our old
12:14bad habits.
12:18When we give
12:20in to panic
12:21and give voice
12:24and give voice
12:24to fear,
12:25desperation
12:26can easily
12:28take over.
12:31And fear-driven
12:33decisions,
12:34distorted perspectives
12:36and hasty
12:38actions
12:39often follow.
12:42Holding
12:44your peace
12:45simply means
12:47refusing to give
12:50voice
12:51to fear,
12:52to doubt,
12:53to desperation.
12:57It means
12:59that no matter
13:02how unsteady
13:04the situation
13:05appears,
13:07your heart
13:08is steady
13:10enough
13:10to recognize
13:12that God
13:13is in charge.
13:15trusting
13:17in God
13:17is not just
13:18about believing
13:19He can do
13:20something.
13:21It's about
13:22resting on
13:23the fact
13:24that God
13:25is in control
13:26even when
13:29everything else
13:30feels out
13:31of control.
13:33Holding
13:33your peace
13:34is the
13:36outward
13:36evidence
13:37of an
13:38inward
13:39trust.
13:41Remaining
13:41calm
13:42is to
13:43recognize
13:44that
13:44whilst
13:45the battle
13:46is real
13:47the victory
13:48belongs
13:48to the
13:49Lord.
13:51In this
13:52account
13:53people of
13:53God
13:54we also
13:56can see
13:57that the
13:58people of
13:59Israel
13:59could not
14:01see the
14:01bigger picture.
14:03If we
14:04go to
14:05Exodus
14:05chapter
14:0613
14:07verse
14:0817
14:09and 18
14:10we read
14:12that God
14:14was
14:15actually
14:16preserving
14:17them
14:17from
14:18something
14:19worse.
14:21The Bible
14:22says that
14:23God
14:23did not
14:24take them
14:25through the
14:26nearest path
14:27the path
14:28of the
14:29Philistines
14:30because
14:31He was
14:32preserving
14:33them
14:33from
14:34witnessing
14:35war
14:35and
14:36the
14:36company
14:37in
14:37temptation
14:38to
14:39return
14:40to
14:40Egypt.
14:43That is
14:44why we
14:45should avoid
14:46the trap
14:47of lamenting
14:49and murmuring
14:50by saying
14:51why is it
14:54if I pray
14:56to God
14:56if I cry
14:57to God
14:58my situation
14:59seems
15:00worse.
