00:00:01Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:43Good evening. Five games on the way this evening and only three weekends remain in the Premier League season.
00:00:48It's the final sprint towards the finish line. Always up to speed, of course, Wayne Rooney and Ashley Williams.
00:00:54League leaders Arsenal play tomorrow. They began the day with a five point advantage at the top, having played a
00:01:00game more than second place Manchester City.
00:01:03Pep Guardiola's side faced Europe chasing Brentford this evening on the back of something of an epic at Everton on
00:01:09Monday.
00:01:11Pep Guardiola's team hoping to narrow the gap at the top to three points.
00:01:16This could be a big night in the title race.
00:01:19Ducco. That's the call for Manchester City.
00:01:25What are you?
00:01:28Oh, Gay completely switches off.
00:01:32Gina Barry does his bit.
00:01:34Jake O'Brien! Everton have turned it around!
00:01:42And Erling Haaland gets one back!
00:01:48Jeremy Ducco rescues a point from Manchester City!
00:01:55Your commentator at the Etihad is Guy Mowry.
00:02:00A late equaliser usually feels like a point gain but not in Manchester City's case on Monday, having lost the
00:02:07lead and any notion of having an advantage in the title race.
00:02:12It feels now like only a mistake-free run to the finish will keep them in with a shout.
00:02:17And the team setting out to start that run today shows two changes from the draw at Everton, with Dutch
00:02:23duo Nathan Ake and Tijani Reinders coming in, replacing Kusanov, who's got a knock, and Nico Gonzalez back to the
00:02:30bench.
00:02:31Two changes to the Brentford team as well, as they chase a European place for the first time ever, and
00:02:37maybe even a spot in the Champions League.
00:02:40Aaron Hickey and Christopher Ayer come in for Seb Vandenberghe and Dango Watara.
00:02:47Five minutes played, and Andy Morrison's name is being sung by Manchester City fans.
00:02:55Their former captain has been diagnosed with Ramsey-Hunt syndrome, it's a virus in the facial nerve.
00:03:01He was the man who wore number five in that famous 1999 playoff final against Gillingham.
00:03:07All that Wembley drama, fondly remembered and still loved here.
00:03:13Ake, had to stretch for it, stretched enough to make it a throw-in rather than a corner.
00:03:25Donnarumma doesn't get there, he's struggling, and it's cleared away by Mateus Nunes.
00:03:31Donnarumma appealing for a foul, nobody listening to him.
00:03:38Is there any sort of foul on Donnarumma there?
00:03:41Igor Thiago is just a big presence in front of him.
00:03:46Doesn't have to get out of the way, just because the goalkeeper wants him to.
00:03:56Igor Thiago with a touch on for Shada.
00:03:58Now there's a race on, and Mateus Nunes takes the ball.
00:04:02Brentford are adamant that he took the ball by foul means.
00:04:06And VAR are in operation.
00:04:09They took the ball.
00:04:11That's the VAR's opinion.
00:04:13The collision with Shada happened afterwards.
00:04:21I hope he senses his chance here, and he has forced Doku off balance.
00:04:26I think it was just a slip there.
00:04:27It is going to be a corner.
00:04:30And the corner will be taken quick and short.
00:04:36Doku, with a shimmy past Jensen, and a touch towards Haaland, it's blocked, it's Gehi trying to get to it.
00:04:43But Kelleher then gathers the ball.
00:04:45The city threat is rising.
00:04:48Doku's in the midst of most of it.
00:04:50Haaland is starting to get more and more involved by the minute.
00:04:56Doku, with a lift through to Bernardo Silva.
00:04:59Jensen back to challenge him.
00:05:01And this one rolls behind four.
00:05:03Once given this time the referee's frantically blowing away on his whistle.
00:05:08Bernardo Silva trying to get to the ball.
00:05:10Stopped from doing so.
00:05:12And a little bit of afters between Bernardo Silva and Nathan Collins.
00:05:17Bernardo Silva gets the yellow card, which is his tenth of the season.
00:05:22He's past the threshold, isn't he?
00:05:29Well, Manchester City have to hit the ground running.
00:05:32This is a big 45 minutes.
00:05:36Coyote.
00:05:38Through for Igor Thiago.
00:05:40Igor Thiago through on goal.
00:05:42Gehi now gets in his way and Donnarumma gets in the way of the shot.
00:05:47Important save.
00:05:49The Premier League's second most lethal marksman was in for Brentford.
00:05:54And Brentford got in really simply.
00:05:58Donnarumma sharply down and Gehi regained his composure to put it behind.
00:06:11It's not rocking and rolling, is it?
00:06:13Not at all.
00:06:15Too used to it?
00:06:18Expecting it?
00:06:19Don't know.
00:06:21Grinders.
00:06:22Doku.
00:06:28Doku.
00:06:30Just invited Buki to get there first for Brentford.
00:06:33And he did.
00:06:34It's gonna be a corner.
00:06:37Dajani Rinders is going off.
00:06:39And I think Ryan Scherke, he's gonna see his number on the board as well.
00:06:42and on will come Omar Mahmouche
00:06:45and Phil Foden
00:06:54Foden has scored seven goals
00:06:56in nine previous games against Brentford
00:06:58here's Doku
00:06:59he's gone for it again
00:07:01and he's done it again
00:07:04it's a repeat show
00:07:06from Jeremy Doku
00:07:08all eyes were on the
00:07:09touchline with the substitutions being made
00:07:12as soon as they're on the field
00:07:14the corner was taken
00:07:15called Brentford
00:07:16and Doku hasn't half
00:07:18relieved the atmosphere in here
00:07:22and that's the sort of view
00:07:23he's been looking for all game
00:07:25he loves that view
00:07:26he loves that goal
00:07:28we've seen it a few times now
00:07:30more than once in the last few weeks
00:07:35they needed that
00:07:37goodness they needed that
00:07:42Otara
00:07:46played through beautifully to Igor Thiago
00:07:48Igor Thiago's touch
00:07:50down goes Shada in the box
00:07:51he's at him and he was pushed
00:07:55Mateus Nunes
00:07:56plays it against Jamal Juk
00:07:58but there will be a VAR check
00:08:00and this is a really important one
00:08:02for Manchester City
00:08:04for Brentford
00:08:04for Arsenal
00:08:05the first thing to be looked at will be
00:08:08the offside potentially
00:08:09Igor Thiago
00:08:10and then was there a push on Shada
00:08:13that's what this is about ultimately
00:08:15well the check's over
00:08:16there will be no breath for penalty
00:08:18just a bit of jostling between the two
00:08:21and not enough to constitute
00:08:22a push on the back of Kevin Shada
00:08:24that's how the ref saw it in real time
00:08:26and that's how VAR has seen it
00:08:28having another look
00:08:33Bernardo Silva
00:08:38Semenya
00:08:43Semenya
00:08:44builds up ahead of steam here
00:08:45called the cross for Haaland
00:08:47he can't finish first time he can second
00:08:51a different sort of earning Haaland goal
00:08:57and a different sort of feeling of relief
00:08:59from the first goal
00:09:01and City do now seem to be on their way
00:09:03to the three points
00:09:05that were an absolute
00:09:06cast iron must
00:09:09Erling Haaland has now scored
00:09:11in four successive Premier League games
00:09:14can't recall him
00:09:15netting too many times like this before
00:09:19Manchester City 2 Brentford 0
00:09:23Brentford
00:09:25another Silva
00:09:25Mamouche
00:09:28Foden
00:09:28nicely shifted from boot to boot
00:09:35Doku
00:09:37Doku across to Foden
00:09:39what a save that is from Kelleher
00:09:43razor sharp
00:09:44Phil Foden
00:09:46thought his long wait for his next goal was over
00:09:48he was sharp too with the attempt to score
00:09:51what about that strong arm from Kelleher
00:09:55Manchester City have played their best football since going 1-0 up
00:09:59just seem to shake all the cobwebs from them
00:10:02calm everything down
00:10:03he started to actually play rather than be swapped by what it all meant today
00:10:10Bernardo Silva
00:10:11he's trying to prompt City to push forward to the end
00:10:14knowing that gold could be a factor right at the end of the season
00:10:18here's Haaland
00:10:20Haaland through to Mamouche
00:10:22and Mamouche has taken that beautifully
00:10:26and that's what Bernardo Silva's been insisting upon
00:10:29for the last few minutes
00:10:31revving them up for more
00:10:33you never know
00:10:35one more at the end of the season could make all the difference
00:10:39Mamouche has found game time
00:10:41really difficult to come by in the last few weeks and months
00:10:44but you wouldn't know it by the way he puts this in
00:10:47that's clinical
00:10:49and another assist for Erling Haaland
00:10:51we talk a lot about his goals
00:10:53well that's eight that he's made in the Premier League this season as well
00:10:58Semenyo's poke
00:10:59only to Lewis Potter
00:11:00Henderson
00:11:10loaded by Watara
00:11:11he got Thiago
00:11:12it's saved by Donnarumma
00:11:16again
00:11:17academic in terms of today's points
00:11:19could mean something at the end of the season in terms of goal difference
00:11:26Manchester City get the result that they absolutely had to this evening
00:11:30for Brentford a real blow
00:11:32to their hopes of getting into Europe for the first time in the club's history
00:11:36they'll go again next week with two to play
00:11:39City play Palace on Wednesday night
00:11:43the first of three that they've got left as the chase of Arsenal goes on
00:11:49in the first half we arrived a lot in the final third like what happened against Everton
00:11:54but we didn't have enough players there in the second half we have enough players there
00:11:58to score a goal is not to be a genius
00:11:59it has to bring players close to Erling
00:12:02you know and Omar scored because Erling and Phil Foden was close to Erling in the second half
00:12:07that's why we create the sense of more goals
00:12:09so Erling is there, Omar is there and create a little bit doubts for the defenders
00:12:14otherwise as Erling alone against three central defenders it's impossible to score a goal
00:12:18we know that we had to score
00:12:20and when we scored a goal obviously then there are more space
00:12:23and then we scored a second goal and we were a bit relieved, happy
00:12:28could have, should have had a penalty, key moment
00:12:30I've looked at it three or four times, there's no way Kevin would go down
00:12:35and the comment that was made was there wasn't enough contact
00:12:39but when he's, Kevin's one of the quickest players in the league
00:12:42and when he's moving at such speed
00:12:44it's only going to take a little bit of contact, he's got the goal gaping
00:12:49so for me that one is a penalty
00:12:51and the gap is down to two points again
00:12:53over to Arsenal, what do you do tomorrow, do you watch it, follow it, going golfing?
00:12:57well training, I have my sister here, so we'll see
00:13:00but yeah, you have my home and I'll watch it, yeah
00:13:03we all will Pep, we all will
00:13:04it really was Wayne the Doku show again today wasn't it
00:13:07he's stepped up as good and big players do when their teams need them
00:13:11he has and I think over the last few weeks he's been incredible really
00:13:16and his run of form and his goals he's scored the chances he's created
00:13:19you see this, his first goal against Everton
00:13:21cutting inside on his left foot, whipping the far corner
00:13:25and again here, banging out in the back of the space
00:13:28and then no hesitation, gets the ball cut inside and it's a great finish
00:13:33and today he was an absolute nightmare for the Brentford defenders
00:13:37they couldn't deal with him, he was direct, he was positive
00:13:41but with quality, which sometimes he has lacked at times
00:13:43he makes the goalkeeper make a good save
00:13:46and then he's forming a really good partnership with Nick O'Reilly
00:13:50and this is part of his game which I think he's improved a lot
00:13:53it's a really good ball to O'Reilly and then he pulls the ball back
00:13:56but nothing really comes of it
00:13:57again here, drawing players into him
00:13:59good bit of communication with his eyes with O'Reilly
00:14:03which is important and you need
00:14:04really good touch, flick, ball comes into the box
00:14:07and then Man City get another half decent chance
00:14:09from him being positive and taking the ball
00:14:12here, drawing players into him again
00:14:15stands the defender up, no chance the defender can do anything about it
00:14:19and create a really good chance for Erling Haaland
00:14:21so everything that City done, come from him
00:14:23find the pocket of space in the middle of the pitch
00:14:25being positive again, no hesitation, taking a shot of his left foot
00:14:29and here, Brentford now, they know that he's caused them problems
00:14:32all day, so now what they've done, they've got three players out
00:14:36and they still can't deal with him, they've got three players to try and get close to him
00:14:39to try and tackle him, to try and foul him
00:14:41get to the byline again, another good ball into the box
00:14:44and unlucky not to score
00:14:46and now on the corner, Phil Foden plays it short
00:14:49they try and double up on him
00:14:51Thiago comes out to see if he can help as well
00:14:53and then here, the problem here is Thiago thinks that Brentford have got the ball
00:14:57he goes to run forward, he gambles for the counter-attack
00:15:00and Dockby comes into the space where Thiago was
00:15:03and it's another incredible finish
00:15:06Incredible, and to repeat that goal if you like
00:15:10as he has done a few times is just phenomenal
00:15:12and have a look at this as well
00:15:14Well, I think this shows how reliant today
00:15:17and not just today, over the last few weeks
00:15:18Man City has been on Dockby
00:15:20most of the attacks have come down the left-hand side
00:15:22and when you've got a player that confident and not in form
00:15:25you have to just keep him in the ball
00:15:26and if you keep giving him the ball, you'll cause problems
00:15:28Well, this increase, this flurry of goal-scoring activity
00:15:32is no coincidence, Wayne
00:15:33have a look at this clip
00:15:34you and Micah telling him he needs to shoot more
00:15:37after the FA Cup semi-final
00:15:39and this was his response
00:15:41My first reaction when I dribble is like who is free
00:15:43instead of where is the goal, you know
00:15:45instead of shoot or
00:15:47so I have to be more selfish in those moments
00:15:49and look for the goal first as an attacker
00:15:52And since that FA Cup semi-final
00:15:54I mean, he's literally gone out there and done everything you told him to
00:15:57Yeah, well after the semi-final, I said to him off air
00:15:59I said you need to be more selfish and get more shots off
00:16:01and you see from that, you know, the goals he scored, the shots he's had
00:16:04the chances created, everything about his game since then
00:16:08shows he's an absolute world-class player
00:16:10and this season, but especially over the last month
00:16:13you see it come together
00:16:14Are you claiming an assist?
00:16:16I hope not, because obviously
00:16:17Well, Arsenal fans aren't happy with you
00:16:19No, but what you enjoy is top players being
00:16:22you know, good and creating and causing problems for defenders
00:16:24And speaking of Arsenal, of course for the title race
00:16:27they could not afford to drop any more points, Manchester City
00:16:30They had to get back to winning ways today
00:16:32Let's remind ourselves of the run-in there, Ashley
00:16:34Yeah, they did what they had to do today
00:16:36against a very stubborn Brentford team
00:16:38and then they just put the pressure a little bit
00:16:40back onto Arsenal tomorrow
00:16:42I feel like Arsenal will be confident
00:16:44they'll go into that game with confidence
00:16:46and they know it's in their hands now
00:16:47and if you're Manchester City today
00:16:49you just go out and get the win any way you can do
00:16:52Yeah, I think City have just got a time to win the games
00:16:54but this last week
00:16:56I felt City have dropped points against Everton
00:16:58and I feel like both teams will win every game
00:17:00which makes Arsenal champions
00:17:02And of course there were a couple of decisions
00:17:04you heard Keith Andrews there talking about Kevin Shard
00:17:07that he felt could have gone for them today
00:17:09Did you agree with him?
00:17:11No, I can understand why he's frustrated
00:17:14because in real time
00:17:15both decisions seemed like a foul
00:17:17which weren't given
00:17:17but after watching it back, I have to say
00:17:19I don't think either of them was a foul
00:17:21this was the first one
00:17:22and as you can see
00:17:24Nunes just gets a touch on the ball there
00:17:26and I don't think that's enough contact
00:17:28I can understand
00:17:29I don't think Shard has dived
00:17:30because he's running at pace
00:17:31but I don't think it's enough for a foul
00:17:33watching this one
00:17:34in real time I thought it was a penalty definitely
00:17:36but as we see the replay
00:17:38Shard actually trips himself up
00:17:40that's his own foot against his own heel
00:17:43and because again he's running at such pace
00:17:45he goes down
00:17:46so I can see why Keith Andrews would be frustrated
00:17:49but looking back at them
00:17:50they're not fouls
00:17:51At this stage in a title race
00:17:53when it's tit for tat
00:17:54Wayne, you've been there
00:17:55tell us what it feels like
00:17:57when you're inside that
00:17:59Exciting, nervous
00:18:00you get every emotion
00:18:02and obviously with Man City win today
00:18:04now it's Arsenal's turn to go out
00:18:05and win the game tomorrow against West Ham
00:18:07so every type of emotion you think you can have
00:18:10you go through over this next couple of weeks
00:18:13and it's brilliant when you're in it
00:18:15when you get out of it at the right side
00:18:18then it's incredible, such a good field
00:18:19when you're on the wrong side of it
00:18:21which I've been on as well
00:18:22it's one of the worst fields in the world
00:18:24OK, all to play for
00:18:25Well, if Aston Villa win the Europa League
00:18:28and finish 5th in the Premier League
00:18:29then 6th place would qualify for next season's Champions League
00:18:32Bournemouth currently occupy that spot
00:18:34on a run of 15 games unbeaten
00:18:36ahead of their visit to Fulham
00:18:37and Chris Lacham was at Craven Cottage
00:18:40Anthony Iriola has 3 games left at Bournemouth
00:18:43can he deliver continental football
00:18:45as the perfect parting gift?
00:18:47Marco Silva may also be on the move
00:18:50we don't know if he'll extend his Craven Cottage contract
00:18:53he makes changes from the side
00:18:55folded by Arsenal last week
00:18:57Tom Cairney comes into midfield
00:18:59while Rodrigo Munez starts
00:19:01in place of the injured Raul Jimenez
00:19:04Bournemouth have stood down right back Alex Jimenez
00:19:06while they investigate social media posts
00:19:08so Adam Smith comes in
00:19:1012 goal junior group
00:19:12he has impressed everyone this season
00:19:14including Barcelona
00:19:15said to be tracking his progress
00:19:21it's been a good watch, some terrific football
00:19:23but precious little by way of real chances
00:19:27Traquese now
00:19:29threads one through to Castagna
00:19:31hangs the ball higher
00:19:32with the goal gaping
00:19:35heads the ball wide
00:19:37head in hands for his manager
00:19:40Traquese with disguise on the pass
00:19:42the arc of the run kept him on side
00:19:45and Munez
00:19:46surely should have hit the target
00:19:50Castagna
00:19:51plays the ball inside to Wilson
00:19:54helps it on and now look at this space down the left hand side
00:19:57Robinson
00:19:58galloping forward
00:19:59hill comes across to block him and it's important defensive work
00:20:03by the right back who tucked in Adam Smith
00:20:12and he is the first
00:20:14and Munez with the overhead attempts
00:20:18wonderful technique
00:20:20shout for handball play continues
00:20:28VAR
00:20:28VAR are checking for any whiff of handball from the Munez overhead kick
00:20:32play continues for now
00:20:35that's a wonderful shimmy from Castagna
00:20:38and a foul from Christie
00:20:40will produce the first yellow card of the afternoon
00:20:44really clever
00:20:45body shimmy from Castagna
00:20:48he paid for it
00:20:51here's another look at the Munez overhead kick straight into the ground
00:20:55well Andy Madley is being sent to the screen here
00:20:58for the challenge by Ryan Christie on Castagna
00:21:03that's a bad one
00:21:04that's a bad one
00:21:05when you slow it down
00:21:07and here comes the verdict
00:21:08after review
00:21:10the yellow card for Bournemouth number 10
00:21:12has been upgraded to a red card for serious style play
00:21:15the fine decision is red card
00:21:17but it's not
00:21:18where do you see it?
00:21:20so Ryan Christie is sent from the field
00:21:22in front of the watching Scotland boss Steve Clarke
00:21:26and Bournemouth are down to 10
00:21:31so not yet half time
00:21:32and Fulham are a man up
00:21:37Wilson's cross
00:21:39Anderson's header is looping onto the crossbar
00:21:42well that would have been a 1-2 punishment for Bournemouth
00:21:46really well worked
00:21:47Anderson gets up high
00:21:49I think Petrovic had it covered
00:21:55long range effort from Lukic is a good one
00:21:57and Petrovic punched
00:22:00Castagna helps it back in
00:22:01it's too high for Smith Rowe
00:22:03Fulham surging towards the half time break
00:22:09really good hit from Sasa Lukic
00:22:11denied by the brilliant diving save from Petrovic
00:22:18Tabernier has ridden the challenge of Castagna and
00:22:23the play was initially allowed to continue
00:22:25and then Anderson has gone in really heavily on true fair
00:22:28and all of a sudden Bournemouth are surrounding Andy Madley
00:22:31and asking him about the ferocity of the challenge
00:22:38it is a yellow card for Joachim Anderson
00:22:42they're checking this for a red card for possible serious foul play
00:22:46and now Andy Madley is being sent to the screen again
00:22:52the VAR are showing Andy Madley the incident in full speed first so he can see it
00:22:58and then slowing it down so he can see the top leg
00:23:01and can judge for himself whether it's two feet with dangerous force
00:23:09after review the yellow card for Fulham with a five
00:23:12they've been upgraded to a red card in the same foul play
00:23:14a bad decision is a red card
00:23:19it's ten on ten
00:23:21the yellow card for Anderson deemed insufficient after review
00:23:25and now Marco Silva's Fulham are also down to ten men
00:23:29and Fulham's advantage is removed
00:23:34well the half-time team talks would have been shaken up
00:23:36maybe even torn up by those two late red cards
00:23:40Tavernier
00:23:42did well to keep it in play
00:23:44couldn't keep possession
00:23:48but he's won it back here Tavernier
00:23:50and now Kruppi on the edge never needs too much
00:23:53and he's whipped the ball onto the crossbar
00:23:58barely a yard to work in for the young Frenchman
00:24:01but he's shown all season
00:24:02he doesn't need much more than that
00:24:06first look at goal for the teenager
00:24:08and he's so nearly beat Bernd Leno
00:24:15Trafair with the delivery too high for Ryan
00:24:19Smith recycles the play
00:24:21not yet full for Ryan
00:24:22who got it out of his feet
00:24:24and found the back of the neck
00:24:29a magic moment for Bournemouth in the sunshine
00:24:33their brilliant Brazilian at it again
00:24:37what a season this teenager is having
00:24:40and when Smith laid it off he only had one thought in his mind
00:24:43bang
00:24:45could Bernd Leno have done better
00:24:47slightly unsighted
00:24:48but
00:24:49Anthony Iriola
00:24:50cares not a jot
00:24:511-0 Bournemouth
00:24:53Marco Silva says if Fulham
00:24:55want European football
00:24:56every game really becomes must win
00:24:59Bournemouth get the points today
00:25:00they can almost touch European football
00:25:03Bob
00:25:04lovely disguise on the pass and gets it back
00:25:07gets a yard
00:25:08and fires the ball over the top
00:25:11what an introduction that would have been for the young Norwegian
00:25:18good to see Roy Hodgson
00:25:20one of five former Fulham bosses in the stands today
00:25:24Kruppi to Ryan
00:25:25Kruppi is foul play continues
00:25:27Ryan is advancing on his own
00:25:29but Josh King is the only man to stop him
00:25:32Ryan goes past two and Castaner has done well
00:25:35it's still alive and Truffaire has his shot blocked on the line
00:25:39Josh King who's just come on
00:25:41a teenage attacker
00:25:42is initially beaten
00:25:44but he is the player that recovers
00:25:46to block the certain goal from Truffaire
00:25:51Unal
00:25:53keeps possession
00:25:54and has it in the box now
00:25:56whips it across goal
00:25:57and Amin Adley flosses lines
00:26:03brilliant work by Unal
00:26:05and if not quite an open goal
00:26:07four fifths of an open goal
00:26:11Fulham are into their last minute
00:26:13Robinson sends it into the box
00:26:15it might yet fall for Bob
00:26:17it might yet fall for King
00:26:19off the underside of the bar
00:26:22and still alive
00:26:23Moonies is blocked out
00:26:25and Bournemouth can breathe again
00:26:28what a moment for Fulham and Josh King
00:26:31but he couldn't beat the upright
00:26:34and that's why they're celebrating
00:26:38Bournemouth have held on
00:26:39and now they believe
00:26:41they can almost book their flights
00:26:44full time at Craven Cottage
00:26:46full of nil form at one
00:26:49Today was not decisive
00:26:51because we still need more points
00:26:52but it was a big game
00:26:55considering also the opposition
00:26:58also how the game has gone
00:26:59the two red cards
00:27:00you kind of reset, start a different game
00:27:03and I think especially the players have shown
00:27:05like big spirit
00:27:07completely underserved result for us
00:27:09I think is the first thing that I want to say
00:27:11after of course that real moment from Anderson
00:27:15the red card changed completely the dynamic of the game
00:27:18I didn't see so far an image that showed to me
00:27:21that is a clear red card for Hoa
00:27:23that is true I didn't see
00:27:24I see many replays about the moment
00:27:26you don't think that's a red card?
00:27:27I didn't see an image that showed to me that is a red card
00:27:31The lads are buzzing
00:27:32that was a real shift of a game
00:27:34we believe in ourselves
00:27:36the ability we've got in this group is top
00:27:38it's a special group and
00:27:40you know we've got two big games now to keep our dream alive
00:27:44We'll get on to the dream in a moment
00:27:45but Marco Silva having a bit of a grumble there about Joachim Andersson
00:27:48and that was the second red card of the match
00:27:51so let's do them in order, Ryan Christie first
00:27:53how did you see them both?
00:27:54Yeah I think this one's a nailed on red card
00:27:56I think he's just misjudged it
00:27:58I don't think there was malice in the tackle
00:28:00but you can see clearly here it's high
00:28:02with force and he's out of control
00:28:04so I think Castagne is lucky that he managed to continue playing in that game
00:28:08I think Christie knows straight away he's mistimmed that
00:28:11and it got upgraded and rightly so
00:28:13by Andy Madley who did have a busy afternoon
00:28:16this one at first I didn't think it was a red card
00:28:21and I thought that Anderson was a little bit unlucky
00:28:23but watching it back I think he's left the floor with both feet
00:28:28whereas he has touched the ball a little bit
00:28:31both of his right and his left foot made contact
00:28:34so I can see why it was given
00:28:36and he has tweeted about this
00:28:38and that appears to be genuine his sentiment in there
00:28:41that he's taking full responsibility
00:28:43so he's taking ownership of it
00:28:45Yeah which would suggest that he probably knows as well
00:28:47that it's the right decision
00:28:49and of course that all happened in the first half
00:28:51second half Bournemouth come out
00:28:52and we're used to seeing them playing very attractive attacking football
00:28:55and they kind of reverted to their type didn't they?
00:28:57Yeah absolutely and I think credit to the manager again
00:29:00we often say this but he actually took his striker off
00:29:03and put on Tyler Adams who was excellent
00:29:05and you can see with these three players at the top end of the pitch
00:29:08and the first half near wins the ball back
00:29:09it's a great best goal from Krupa
00:29:11he's so unlucky not to score that that would have been a great goal
00:29:14and that Trufa delivers the ball in
00:29:17they keep it alive it goes out the back
00:29:21Rayan's very clever with where he gets the ball
00:29:23and once he gets in this position you just fancy him
00:29:25and it actually takes a bit of a nick off Calvin Bassey
00:29:28and goes past the goalkeeper
00:29:31Trufa as I said he had a really good game
00:29:33he's added so much to this Bournemouth team this season
00:29:35driving forward they've got pace and power
00:29:38Tavernier is always lively
00:29:40great bit of skill, double step over
00:29:42shifts it, gets his shot off
00:29:43and they're creating chances, they still look dangerous
00:29:45even though Evan Nielsen's not on the pitch
00:29:47you can see here how quickly they get the ball forward
00:29:50little bit of skill from Krupa
00:29:51and then Rayan is just, he's been electric since he's been in the league
00:29:55but look at the support with him, they're up
00:29:58even though they've got ten men, they've still got energy
00:30:00a little bit unlucky, Trufa probably should score
00:30:02a good block from King but
00:30:04having taken his striker off with ten men
00:30:07you wonder what he's doing
00:30:08but when you've got those players up front
00:30:10you've still got a second option
00:30:11that whole passage there actually kind of sums up
00:30:12it was a crazy game in the news, wasn't it?
00:30:14very entertaining
00:30:15they are on the longest unbeaten run at the moment
00:30:19of 16 games
00:30:20that's in Europe's top 5 leagues this season
00:30:23they're the ones that are in the continuous unbeaten run
00:30:26the others have come to an end
00:30:27and that is why they're in the box seat really
00:30:29for that sixth spot
00:30:30and I do really believe it's down to the manager
00:30:33I think he's been so impressive this season
00:30:35they've recruited well but
00:30:37it's almost like whoever he puts on the pitch gets the job done
00:30:40and he plays his style of football
00:30:41and I think they've been a credit to themselves and the league
00:30:43Man City at home, Nottingham Forest away
00:30:46are their two remaining fixtures
00:30:48and Fulham of course could have been up there
00:30:51but they've just tailed off haven't they?
00:30:52just two wins in nine
00:30:54and kind of an opposite situation in a way to Bournemouth
00:30:58who've got real clarity in what's going on with their team
00:31:00their manager for the future
00:31:01Yeah it is and I think for the Fulham players
00:31:04obviously with the uncertainty with Michael Silva's future at the club
00:31:09and you don't know how that affects players
00:31:11and whether that affects them in a negative way
00:31:13but obviously the run of form they've been on hasn't been great
00:31:15and the flip side as you said was
00:31:18Bournemouth, they lose the manager
00:31:20announced the manager's leaving
00:31:21and swiftly announced a new manager
00:31:23which gives them players clarity
00:31:25it gives them the energy and the vision to look forward
00:31:28to know what they want to do
00:31:29and hopefully go and qualify for Europe
00:31:31and of course new manager coming in Marco Rosa
00:31:32delighted that they're sitting there at the moment
00:31:35potentially with Champions League football next season
00:31:36OK well Brighton manager Fabian Hertzner
00:31:39signed a new deal this week to keep him at the club until 2029
00:31:42his side were looking to continue their push for European football
00:31:45when they faced bottom side Wolves at the Amex
00:31:48Jonathan Pearce, watch this one
00:31:50Hurdsker has won 43.5% of his games in charge
00:31:54the highest win percentage of any of their managers
00:31:56since Gus Boyette 13 years ago
00:31:59two wins from the last three should be enough for European qualification
00:32:03Wolves haven't won in 19 away league games
00:32:06and there's seven away goals this season
00:32:08it's the lowest tally in Europe's top 10 leagues
00:32:11two Brighton changes to Koipa for Wifa who's injured
00:32:13Kalioglu switches to right back
00:32:15and Dunk returns after four games for Boscagli
00:32:18if Danny Welbeck scores a 14th Premier League goal this season
00:32:21it'll set a new club record
00:32:23one Wolves change
00:32:24swang for Raccadari up front
00:32:26Kreci is fit enough for the bench
00:32:28they haven't beaten Brighton in the last eight meetings
00:32:30but they've lost here just once in six visits
00:32:37in the old gold and black
00:32:39where we're hunting wonders get us off and underway
00:32:41kicking from right to left
00:32:44if they lose today
00:32:46it means they'll have lost against all other 19 Premier League clubs this season
00:32:50and that would be just the second time that's ever happened
00:32:55Ugo Bueno takes the throw to Andre
00:32:58here's Danny Welbeck to Mitoma
00:33:00Brighton will want to start the game on the front foot
00:33:02and well
00:33:03and it's out wide here for De Kuypers
00:33:05cross into the middle
00:33:06and they've started brilliantly
00:33:09Hinchelwood three goals in three games
00:33:11and Brighton over Albion score
00:33:14in the first minute of play
00:33:16Brighton one Wolves nil
00:33:17what a start
00:33:20it was a towering leap and a fine header
00:33:23but I'll tell you what Mitoma does well here
00:33:26battled hard to play it out wide
00:33:29De Kuyper back in the starting line-up
00:33:31saw the run of Hinchelwood
00:33:32no one in all gold did
00:33:34really appalling defending
00:33:36Brighton over Albion one Wolves nil
00:33:38is the score in the first minute
00:33:43Minty tries the big switch
00:33:46all the way to Mitoma
00:33:47Lima was hesitant
00:33:48Mitoma inside him
00:33:50he'll shoot from here will he?
00:33:51he releases
00:33:52Minty arrives back into the middle
00:33:53and it's cleared away by Santiago Bueno
00:33:58and Brighton cut effortlessly through
00:34:00Wolverhampton Wanderers there
00:34:04Brighton are flying
00:34:06four minutes gone they're ready lead
00:34:08De Kuyper will take the corner kick
00:34:13to the far post
00:34:15dunk makes it two
00:34:19this is a stroll in the sunshine
00:34:21for Brighton and Hove Albion
00:34:23two up inside four minutes
00:34:26it's his first goal since February 24
00:34:29back in the side he's missed four games
00:34:31couple of them through suspension
00:34:33made his run in from beyond that far post
00:34:36too strong too focused too hungry
00:34:38look at the old gold shirts back in there
00:34:40a lot of them are just marking space
00:34:44victory today
00:34:45coupled with other results
00:34:47could take them sixth
00:34:48Boston will win the Europa
00:34:49and finish fifth
00:34:50sixth will be enough
00:34:52to bring Champions League football
00:34:55Welbeck
00:34:56steps away from the challenge
00:34:58into Minty
00:35:00in it comes to Mitoma
00:35:03it's well worked but wide
00:35:07first touch took it wider than he really wanted
00:35:09narrowed the angle
00:35:11he was allowed to get the shot away
00:35:14there's no communication out there
00:35:15for Wolves
00:35:17lack of leadership
00:35:21diagonal switch to Minty
00:35:25there we run Bueno
00:35:26in comes across Welbeck
00:35:28far post
00:35:29needed to be saved
00:35:33and again a ball from the wide position
00:35:35causing damage
00:35:37cross for Welbeck at the far post
00:35:39perhaps got too much on it
00:35:41headed down
00:35:43onto the ground and Bentley pushed it around
00:35:47Wolves have made a change
00:35:48they've taken Hugo Bueno off
00:35:51he hasn't reappeared
00:35:52and
00:35:52David Moula
00:35:54Wolfe has come on
00:35:56Mane
00:35:57looks for the substitute
00:35:58Carioglu got back at him
00:35:59and deflected it away
00:36:01but that's a meaningful Wolves attack
00:36:03for the first time in the game
00:36:04and as a result of it
00:36:05they get their first corner of the game
00:36:09right footed
00:36:10it's dangerous you know
00:36:11towards that far post area
00:36:13Dunk got up well
00:36:15this is Andre
00:36:16flashes it back into the middle
00:36:18Wang with the header on
00:36:20Mane
00:36:20scoops the cross
00:36:22back in
00:36:22off the top of the bar
00:36:25that's the closest we've seen from Wolverhampton Wanderers
00:36:27the header from Yes and Mosquera
00:36:30managers got a reaction from them for the second half
00:36:35the Hinchua goal by the way was his 150th in charge as a manager
00:36:40of Brighton and the 400th goal his teams have scored in his career as a manager
00:36:46Mane
00:36:46crept infield
00:36:49tries to trick his way through
00:36:50still going
00:36:51it's parried away
00:36:52arms run
00:36:53can he finish?
00:36:54checks back to his left
00:36:55and it's scrambled away
00:36:57couldn't clear his feet to get the shot off
00:37:01Mane here was allowed to get through that gap
00:37:04get the shot away
00:37:05keeper didn't cover himself with glory
00:37:09and Brighton fans are getting agitated
00:37:18and Kuba Minto goes out wide
00:37:22don't let's it run on to the Kuiper
00:37:24takes the extra touch
00:37:26it's a backheel by Gross
00:37:31lovely little backheel here
00:37:35Rob Edwards will take some cheer from the fact that they've kept the scoreline to the two
00:37:43oh lovely football Brighton
00:37:45Rute
00:37:47no free kick
00:37:48picks himself up
00:37:49desperate defending back in there
00:37:51Minty's turned away
00:37:52and scores
00:37:54and Brighton have a third
00:37:57oh they finally made the game safe
00:38:0182 minutes after they scored their second goal they get their third
00:38:06it's already deserved one
00:38:10tried to get it away Wolves
00:38:13but it wouldn't go
00:38:14and it wouldn't go
00:38:17and Menti exploded in the third goal
00:38:20his third goal of the season
00:38:23Alfie we're with you
00:38:24Alfie is the son of the kit man
00:38:27who had crucial surgery this week
00:38:30and Brighton have already with three goals and three points
00:38:35move closer to Europe
00:38:36Brighton three Wolves nil
00:38:38me and Maxi we just spoke in the warm-up
00:38:40he said
00:38:41when I've got the ball you know make runs into the box
00:38:43and he obviously got the ball out of his feet and crossed it
00:38:46and yeah I was arriving with good timing
00:38:48and it set us on our way
00:38:51it probably weren't our best performance
00:38:52but it's a 3-0 win
00:38:54and that's all that matters at this stage of the season
00:38:56it's results
00:38:57it was a shocking start
00:38:58I think we were still in our nice hotel for the first five minutes
00:39:02absolutely
00:39:03yes despicable start
00:39:04played backwards
00:39:06still in bed for the second one
00:39:08the corner is shocking defending
00:39:09we know there's going to be a lot of change going forward
00:39:12and for next season
00:39:12so you know that is what it is
00:39:15but the ones that are here right now
00:39:16continue to show some pride
00:39:18two games to go, Leeds then Manchester United
00:39:21how do you approach those games?
00:39:24we have to go all in now
00:39:25and the approach that doesn't change
00:39:28so we will keep going
00:39:29we focus on our jobs
00:39:30we focus on the things we can control
00:39:32we can influence
00:39:33that's only the performance
00:39:34and then we see what happens
00:39:35well they were disappointed with their performance last weekend against Newcastle
00:39:38and they were in a real hurry to get things done and dusted today weren't they?
00:39:42the fastest ever Premier League goal for Brighton
00:39:43they was and they started the game with so much intensity
00:39:47and you look at this from the start
00:39:49getting around the ball, winning the ball back
00:39:51and now they go forward
00:39:53they've got runners going forward
00:39:54and Wolves just could not live with it right from the start
00:39:57and I think this is Brighton's fastest goal in the Premier League history
00:40:0035 seconds
00:40:01but what a header, what a cross
00:40:03and what a header that is
00:40:04and it didn't stop there, Wolves just could not deal
00:40:07with Brighton all day
00:40:09and this, another great switch of play
00:40:11we don't seem to see these switches of play anymore
00:40:14but then the intent again, runners off the ball
00:40:17making Wolves, you know, look very ordinary
00:40:19which, let's be honest, they have been all season
00:40:22and then a good cutback
00:40:23and now they get a corner
00:40:24but look at the bodies in the box
00:40:26and from that resulting corner
00:40:27this defendant is shocking
00:40:29you look at the Wolves players
00:40:31Brighton, the danger for Brighton is at the back post
00:40:33the Wolves players are not even interested, they're not looking
00:40:35they're not opening their bodies, they don't know what's around them
00:40:38and then as the ball comes into play
00:40:40the ball comes to the back post
00:40:42and then, it's a really good header
00:40:44so, I think how they started the game
00:40:47the intensity, the energy
00:40:49which Wolves, Brighton had
00:40:51was incredible
00:40:52and then, this is the 15th minute, so all this
00:40:54is inside the 15th minute
00:40:56a game getting bodies in the box
00:40:59and then nearly killing the game off
00:41:00but, I think the way Brighton
00:41:04set out the stall
00:41:05to win this game from early on
00:41:07was devastating
00:41:08and for the manager, new three year deal
00:41:10three goals and three points
00:41:11and it was a fantastic performance
00:41:13Jack Hinchelwood has caught the eye all season, hasn't he?
00:41:16and he personifies versatility, I think
00:41:19doesn't he? because he's played in these positions here
00:41:22this is the percentage of time that he's played in each of these different positions
00:41:25and that's over 4,311 minutes as well
00:41:28so, you think, well, where is his best position?
00:41:31well, of late, it would seem, actually, to be in the 10 rule
00:41:35Yeah, and he's only 21 years old
00:41:37and sometimes, as a young player, you're asked to play and fill in and do a job for the team
00:41:40which he's obviously done, you see 30% of his games are right back there
00:41:44but he seems to have found a home, as you say, in this attacking midfield position
00:41:47he was brilliant again today, scored a really brave, good header at the start of the game
00:41:52and he seems to be comfortable in that creative position
00:41:55Well, I said that perhaps Bournemouth were in the box seat for that sixth place
00:41:58but these are Brighton's remaining fixtures
00:42:01they've got Leeds away, Manchester United at home, Wayne
00:42:04and let's not forget, European football could go right down to eighth place this season
00:42:09Yeah, I think they're tough fixtures to both Brighton
00:42:12a fantastic team they've shown that all season
00:42:15and I think it's safe to say that they pretty luck
00:42:18sure to be playing European football at some stage next season
00:42:21They have had a season, of course, in Europe before
00:42:23but, you know, having Fabian Herzl's contract secured as well
00:42:26for a few more years, that was announced this week
00:42:29again, you referred to it with Bournemouth
00:42:30that certainty shows what a well-run club it is
00:42:34Yeah, well, exactly, I think Devon Bramford are two of the best-run clubs in the Premier League
00:42:38and it's no surprise, you know, they're doing what they're doing
00:42:41OK, thank you
00:42:43Four games on tomorrow's match of the day with plenty of attention on events at the London Stadium
00:42:49with Jonah
00:42:52It's here to Tommy Abraham
00:42:57And the header in
00:42:59Chino Barry
00:43:02And that would be
00:43:04But he's crossed for it to Soler
00:43:07It's a great chance
00:43:08And Callum Wilson's done it
00:43:11And it's on the end for Jokered
00:43:16There's live commentary of all those games across Five Live and BBC Sounds
00:43:20along with Celtic against Rangers from the Scottish Premiership at midday
00:43:23Kelly Summers, Chester Lucy Bronze in the football interview
00:43:26which is straight after this programme on BBC One
00:43:28Next Saturday afternoon, it's the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City
00:43:32that's live on BBC One
00:43:34And if you missed the start of the show, it's available right now on iPlayer
00:43:37along with edits of every match
00:43:38And watch out for this, it drops first thing on Monday
00:43:44We got labelled like the golden generation
00:43:46We had captains winning Premier League, winning Champions League
00:43:50But in the World Cup, you get a crisis every two or three days
00:43:55Reporters, cameras everywhere
00:43:57This is a bad start for England
00:43:59Everyone was thinking, why is it not quite working?
00:44:04Do you know any of the characters in that one?
00:44:08You don't have to watch it
00:44:10OK, so Anfield, fourth place Liverpool
00:44:12Still work to do, of course, to guarantee Champions League football next season
00:44:16Chelsea have the FA Cup final next week
00:44:18But they've lost six in a row in the Premier League
00:44:20Commentary comes from Simon Brotherton
00:44:23Champions League football could be secured for Liverpool by the end of the day
00:44:27If they win and Bournemouth don't
00:44:29Rio and Gamora starts in place of Florian Beerts, who's ill
00:44:33While fit again, Georgie Mamadash Vidi returns in goal
00:44:36Chelsea make five changes
00:44:38Among them, Philip Jorgensen starts in goal
00:44:40With Robert Sanchez out following his clash of heads on Monday
00:44:44With Morgan Gibbs-White
00:44:45And Levi Colwell makes his first start of the season
00:44:48After recovering from an ACL
00:44:56Bit of space here
00:44:58For Kerkes
00:45:00And he's taking full advantage of it
00:45:02Challenged by Caicedo
00:45:04And it's going to be a Liverpool free kick
00:45:09Clumsy from Caicedo
00:45:16So, five minutes in
00:45:18Sir Bosley strikes it
00:45:20Straight at Colwell
00:45:24And Gamora
00:45:27Up against Parma
00:45:29Here is Gravenberg
00:45:30Oh, it's delightful!
00:45:34What a glorious strike
00:45:37Brian Gravenberg
00:45:39Scores for the first time
00:45:42Since just after Christmas
00:45:43In the league
00:45:45And what a beautiful strike it was too
00:45:49And it's taken Liverpool just over five minutes to score
00:45:54Liverpool one, Chelsea nil
00:45:56And Chelsea's recent woes are quick to continue
00:46:06Given away by Jorgensen collected by Frimpon
00:46:09Red shirt suddenly now
00:46:12Appearing in and around Chelsea's penalty area
00:46:14And it's a corner
00:46:17First one of the game
00:46:22Alexis McAllister to take
00:46:27It's a post line
00:46:29It's a post line
00:46:29Decent ball in
00:46:30It's left for Van Dijk
00:46:31And it was a great chance for number two
00:46:37Completely unmarked
00:46:39Van Dijk
00:46:40Not sure whether he was in an offside position there
00:46:43But he was in plenty of space
00:46:44It's a post line
00:46:49Caicedo
00:46:50This is better
00:46:51Brilliant pass from Moises Caicedo
00:46:54Cucurea
00:46:55Fingertip saved by
00:46:57Mamadashvili
00:46:59Gusto sending it in
00:47:00Trying to pick out Charles Pedro
00:47:02That was better from Chelsea
00:47:06Chelsea suddenly
00:47:08Bursting into life here
00:47:18A free kick there conceded by Cody Gakberg
00:47:25Chelsea
00:47:25Chelsea one assumes a sensing opportunity here
00:47:29Despite the fact they're behind
00:47:33Enzo Fernandes whips it in
00:47:34Oh it barely needed a touch
00:47:36It may not have even got one
00:47:40Chelsea are level
00:47:43It was slow and hard
00:47:45And it went all the way through into the far corner of the net
00:47:51Was there a touch by Fofana here?
00:47:54Swung his right foot at it
00:47:57Chelsea won't worry too much about who it is who claims the goal
00:48:01Because most importantly for them
00:48:03They are level
00:48:09Been a while since Chelsea won a match at Anfield
00:48:12Their last win here
00:48:13Came in front of an empty stadium during Covid
00:48:16Mason Mount scored the only goal of the game that day
00:48:19It was five years ago
00:48:24Caicedo
00:48:24Great movement here by Kukureya
00:48:27Almost an own goal
00:48:28And into the back of the net by Cole Palmer
00:48:31Chelsea get their noses in front in the fourth minute of the second half
00:48:37And Cole Palmer scores for the first time
00:48:41In a couple of months since the 4-1 win away at Aston Villa
00:48:45Early in March
00:48:50The goal is not going to stand
00:48:53Kukureya is adjudged to be in an offside position
00:48:56And it will be offside by a very slender margin
00:49:00Well there's a let off for Liverpool
00:49:06Andre Santos
00:49:09Interception made by Jones and Curtis Jones has it now
00:49:12Advantage played by the referee and Jones has done really well
00:49:18And now it's with Frimpong
00:49:23Soboslai
00:49:252-1 Liverpool
00:49:27Flat goes up
00:49:28Won't count
00:49:29Curtis Jones
00:49:30Curtis Jones celebrates for barely a second or two
00:49:36Both teams then denied a goal
00:49:38A slender offside margin in the opening 13 minutes of the second half
00:49:45Liverpool have won the last two games here
00:49:48Recently against Fulham 2-0
00:49:50And Crystal Palace 3-1
00:49:51The last home match
00:49:54And they're on the front foot
00:49:55Once more with Ryan Gravenberg
00:49:58Jeremy Frimpong
00:49:59Looked like a handball there
00:50:01Cuts back
00:50:03Soboslai brings the best out of Jorgensen
00:50:06They will check for a possible penalty
00:50:11Supporting arm
00:50:13Is the word that comes back to the referee
00:50:19Here comes the change for Liverpool
00:50:20Alexander Isak
00:50:22Is going to come on
00:50:23And the crowd
00:50:24Are very unhappy
00:50:26That Rio Ngomoa is the player being substituted here
00:50:30By Arna Slott
00:50:32And having expressed their displeasure towards their manager
00:50:35At his decision
00:50:36Ngomoa gets a great reception
00:50:48A bit of space here for Soposlai to strike it!
00:50:52Rattling
00:50:54The frame of the goal
00:50:56With a venomous shot
00:50:59It's under a strike
00:51:06Kukareya is challenged by Jones
00:51:08And
00:51:09Caicedo loses it to Isak
00:51:11Kukareya
00:51:17Kukareya
00:51:17Corner
00:51:21What a Liverpool pressure for Chelsea to try to deal with
00:51:29And the header was
00:51:31A brilliant one from Van Dijk
00:51:33They will check the challenge on him inside the penalty area
00:51:38And they've actually looked at the other incident on McAllister
00:51:43But it will not be given as a penalty
00:51:51Nicely done from Ja Pedro
00:51:53Still going here
00:51:55And still
00:51:56And Frimpong challenges
00:51:59He's back up
00:52:00He's back up
00:52:01But it will be looked at
00:52:02It breaks out for Chelsea
00:52:03He's asking the question
00:52:05But Liverpool can't get it away
00:52:07They claim a handball
00:52:08And the referee's going to give a free kick to Liverpool
00:52:14They've completed the check on the challenge in the penalty area
00:52:17And it will not be a penalty
00:52:22That'll do it
00:52:23On is even at Anfield
00:52:26And the noise in the background tells you what many among the home faithful think of it
00:52:31It's finished at Anfield
00:52:32Liverpool 1
00:52:33Chelsea 1
00:52:35It was disappointing to concede that goal
00:52:37We'll have a look at that and look at the reasons why
00:52:39A much better reaction from the early goal we conceded last week
00:52:42So that's a positive
00:52:43And that's what you have to do at this level
00:52:45At any moment, Premier League teams can have a moment, score a goal, a bit of quality
00:52:50So you have to, it's not going to be perfect and I was pleased with the response
00:52:53Because Rio N'Gamoa was given an opportunity today
00:52:55He's quite a handful, isn't he?
00:52:57The crowd clearly wanted to see a bit more of him when he came off
00:53:01I can completely understand that they wanted to see him longer
00:53:03But what they probably didn't notice is that three minutes before that he went to the floor
00:53:08Close to Kramp
00:53:09So I had contact with him
00:53:11Can you go on?
00:53:11And he was really doubting
00:53:14So he gave the signal that he had to come off
00:53:16But I knew when his number went up
00:53:19That wasn't the most popular decision I could make at that moment of time
00:53:23Yeah, there were definitely some rumblings at Anfield of disquiet today
00:53:27Well, then we'll get into that
00:53:28But first of all, Wayne, will you clear up the Chelsea equaliser
00:53:32And who should the goal go to?
00:53:35Yeah, it sends out goal, I think
00:53:38It's a really good free kick actually
00:53:40And it's a poor defender from Liverpool
00:53:43You look at the space here in the middle of the penalty box
00:53:46And the ball goes right through
00:53:48And for Fahna, I think he
00:53:50He says straight away
00:53:52It's not his goal and he points to Enzo
00:53:54So, it's Enzo's goal
00:53:57But the marking from Liverpool was terrible
00:54:00And I initially thought that he actually got a touch on the ball here
00:54:03That's the angle that I think
00:54:04Yeah, it looked like it did
00:54:05But then this clears it up
00:54:06I think, you see here
00:54:07He's nowhere near the ball
00:54:09And it goes straight in
00:54:10But the worrying thing for Liverpool is
00:54:13If you look at the Chelsea players here
00:54:14They're all reacting and all waiting for a rebound or the second ball
00:54:16And there's only one Liverpool player who's actually reacting
00:54:19They're all stood, you know, eight to ten yards out the box
00:54:23And just watching it go on
00:54:25So I think that was a big concern
00:54:27Six defeats in a row before today for Chelsea
00:54:29And there was a little tactical tweak, wasn't there, involving Mark Cucurella
00:54:33Which has made a bit of a difference for you
00:54:35Yeah, absolutely, today
00:54:36I think they played him higher up the pitch
00:54:38They had Fahna just in behind him
00:54:42And this is from kick-off
00:54:43And it shows that most of the attacks today were down Chelsea's left-hand side
00:54:49And that was down to Cucurella
00:54:51We know he's full of energy, full of running, very creative
00:54:55And today he looked like he enjoyed himself in this more advanced position
00:55:00The timing of his run here is brilliant
00:55:03He's looking to run forward, he's looking to run beyond
00:55:05He's creating chances for Chelsea
00:55:07And as you said, where they've struggled up to now
00:55:11But Curtis Jones was playing against him
00:55:14He was a midfielder and you can see he just switches off here
00:55:17Another good run from Cucurella
00:55:20He was really trying to pierce the Liverpool defence with his movement
00:55:24And he's runs in behind
00:55:26Here now that Frimpong's on him
00:55:28Jones is a little bit caught in between
00:55:30Should he go to Fernandes or not?
00:55:32Again, this one, he was just offside on this one
00:55:35But again, it's another great run
00:55:37The timing of it was nearly perfect
00:55:39Nearly sets up the goal for Cole Palmer
00:55:44This is Curtis Jones on the ball, gives it away
00:55:46If we just look at Cucurella
00:55:48He's on his bike straight away
00:55:50He doesn't stop there
00:55:51He continues into the box
00:55:53Two Liverpool players are focused on the ball
00:55:55Nobody's thinking about what's behind them
00:55:58He makes that run
00:55:59And again, nearly gets his shot off
00:56:01If it's not for a really good block from McAllister
00:56:04So, you know, in a team that's struggled to find creativity
00:56:06Just moving Cucurella up the pitch
00:56:09Seem to do the trick for them to then
00:56:11Give them a different dynamic to their attack
00:56:13Getting that point
00:56:14And having a performance like that
00:56:15The week before you've got an FA Cup final
00:56:17Will have done them the world of good
00:56:19But Liverpool, Wayne, could have today
00:56:21All but sealed the deal in terms of Champions League football
00:56:23They had a lot to play for today
00:56:24They did, they could have guaranteed Champions League football next year
00:56:27Which it looks like they'll certainly get that
00:56:30But there was a lot of worrying times
00:56:32Which that's been all season, if I'm being honest
00:56:35I think they don't know
00:56:37They haven't got an identity of how they play
00:56:40Players don't look as if they're interested to play for the team
00:56:43And the fans are realising that
00:56:45The fans are seeing that
00:56:46And obviously we've seen it with Rio going off
00:56:47But the Liverpool fans are normally
00:56:49You know, they give the players time
00:56:51They give the managers time
00:56:52They're patient with them
00:56:53But I think they're starting to lose to patience
00:56:55They've lost nine points from winning positions at Anfield this season
00:56:59Which is the most for a very long time
00:57:02And obviously it's a completely contrasting season, isn't it, to this time last year
00:57:05There's a lot to get right, a lot to put right
00:57:08Yeah, and I think they made a lot of changes in the summer
00:57:11Ones that we all sat here and thought were really good players
00:57:14And it's taken them a long time to integrate into it
00:57:16Going forward, I'm not sure, you know, which of these players
00:57:19That Arna Slott is going to try and build his team around
00:57:22And who are the core players in this team
00:57:25At the minute, they just don't, I don't see really where they're going
00:57:29It's been a really frustrating season for Liverpool
00:57:31OK, third place Manchester United have already sealed their place
00:57:34In next season's Champions League
00:57:36They headed to the Stadium of Light to face a Sunderland side
00:57:38Still with European ambitions of their own
00:57:40Mark Scott is your commentator
00:57:43Sunderland are just three points off eighth
00:57:45Which could be good enough for a place in Europe next season
00:57:49But they've not been too good lately
00:57:51Taking just a point from their past three matches
00:57:55Their appeal against Dan Ballard's red card at Wolves was unsuccessful
00:57:58So Lutzeral here, Trauda comes in for his first minutes in over a month
00:58:03Manchester United have Lissandro Martinez back available after a ban
00:58:07While there are rare starts for Mount and Terksi
00:58:10With Masraoui and former Sunderland favourite Ahmad also coming in
00:58:18Brandi Xhaka
00:58:21Wanted Reynaldo to make the run
00:58:23Almost used him by not using him
00:58:25Reynaldo now shuffles it back to Talbi
00:58:30Sunderland making the brightest start
00:58:31And a bright moment here which nearly ends up in the net from Talbi
00:58:38Sunderland I think knew it was going wide
00:58:45Manchester United yet to have any serious possession in the Sunderland half
00:58:50And it's Sunderland coming forwards again here
00:58:53Siddiqui's through
00:58:55And he's denied by a terrific stop from Senna Lomans
00:59:03Siddiqui started to move but a bit of fancy footwork
00:59:06Continued his run, spotted and picked out by a super pass
00:59:11And then it's a super stop from Lomans to prevent Sunderland taking the early lead
00:59:15And they are making the early running
00:59:18While he secured Champions League qualification last week
00:59:22Michael Carrick says nothing's really changed in terms of whether he'll be staying on as manager next season
00:59:27And that he's not bothered if the club are running the rule over other potential candidates as well
00:59:34Given the job that both these managers have done this season
00:59:37It's a bit strange that there is talk that they might not be in post come the start of the
00:59:41next campaign
00:59:46Amad peeling away and that's important from Rinaldo
00:59:50Kunya back in
00:59:51And Xerxi
00:59:53Best we've seen from Manchester United so far
00:59:57Tricky for Xerxi though as he was going backwards to try and generate some forwards momentum
01:00:05Much changed Manchester United side today and they're yet to really click
01:00:12Lafay
01:00:14Broppi
01:00:15Laid off nicely and sent wide by Xerxi
01:00:18With the aid of a deflection
01:00:22It's another sight of Senel Oman's goal for Sunderland
01:00:26And Xerxi's strike looked on target
01:00:28Until the intervention from Mason Mount
01:00:35The weather is rubbish and the game hasn't been much better
01:00:40Sure's hurried clearance is cut out
01:00:48Lafay
01:00:48Bit of quality there
01:00:50And Broppi denied by a quality stop from Lomans
01:00:55Not the first time today that the Manchester United keeper has stood up
01:01:00And kept Manchester United level in the game
01:01:03Perhaps a bit too close to Lomans
01:01:06But he still had work to do and reacted smartly
01:01:16Hitrauda
01:01:19Broppi
01:01:19Hitrauda
01:01:24Hasn't scored for Sunderland
01:01:26Lutzorel Hitrauda
01:01:28Mightily close to changing that here
01:01:31Nice layoff from Broppi
01:01:33And although he slipped as he hit it
01:01:36It was almost inch perfect
01:01:44Mount to Fernandes
01:01:46And Manchester United have got a man down here
01:01:50It's Bruno Fernandes who's holding his face
01:01:58Oh and I think that Anculo could be in trouble here
01:02:04Certainly an arm in the face of Bruno Fernandes
01:02:07I'd be surprised if VAR didn't want to take a closer look at this
01:02:12Movement of the arm towards Fernandes
01:02:15But not in a violent manner
01:02:18Is the VAR verdict
01:02:20So Bruno's going to be disappointed here
01:02:22That there are no further repercussions
01:02:28Martinez, good strong challenge that
01:02:30Not a bad pass either
01:02:31And here's Mateus Cunha
01:02:33To possibly win it for United
01:02:36Masraoui
01:02:38Fernandes
01:02:39Still searching
01:02:42For that bit of quality this afternoon
01:02:45Manchester United
01:02:51Bruno Fernandes releasing
01:02:52Dorghu, danger here for Sunderland
01:02:55Dorghu's cut back, Cunha
01:02:57The roof's in the way
01:03:03Cunha
01:03:04Cunha with the turn and then the tumble
01:03:06And it's a free kick for simulation
01:03:09And a yellow card
01:03:10For Mateus Cunha
01:03:13Referee had no hesitation here
01:03:14That this was a dive from Cunha
01:03:17Hasn't had much to do today
01:03:20Dropping roofs but ensured that he was in the right spot
01:03:23To repel that strike from Cunha
01:03:28I think a clean sheet away from home
01:03:30Tough place to come here
01:03:31We knew it was going to be tough
01:03:33It was never going to be a perfect game
01:03:34I think it shows probably where we're at
01:03:36In terms of not playing totally at our best
01:03:39And getting a good result
01:03:40So the point's okay
01:03:41Probably we created enough chances to win this game
01:03:44But chances doesn't mean goal
01:03:47And when we got this momentum
01:03:51And the big chances we were not clinical enough
01:03:54And I think the Premier League is really demanding
01:03:56When you don't score
01:03:57You are always on the edge
01:03:58But it shows that our season has been excellent so far
01:04:01And I think we don't know what will happen for the last two games
01:04:05But it's very positive
01:04:07And if we are disappointed at home
01:04:09After a draw against Man United
01:04:11It's a good sign for the club
01:04:13And some people from the outside looking in will say
01:04:15Was there an issue with motivation now that you've got Champions League in the bag?
01:04:19No
01:04:21And that's not something that you need to be concerned about for the remainder of the season either is it?
01:04:25Not at all I think
01:04:26Nothing's done you know
01:04:27The season's not finished so I don't
01:04:30If someone's got that mentality then they're not in our camp
01:04:32So it's not something we spoke about
01:04:34And it's certainly not going into the game today
01:04:36The boys were in a really good place
01:04:37So that's really not something that we're concerned about at all
01:04:40We'll talk about Manchester United's performance and maybe the drop off from last weekend in a moment
01:04:44But first of all the incident on Bruno Fernandes at Nilsson Angulo
01:04:49Was it was he lucky?
01:04:50Yeah very lucky, really lucky boy because
01:04:53I don't know what he's thinking here
01:04:55He's clearly, that's not a running action
01:04:57He's clearly tried to elbow him in the face
01:05:01He's caught him with his forearm
01:05:03We've heard today that because it was the forearm not the elbow or it wasn't enough
01:05:08Contact that it's not a red card
01:05:11That's the naughty challenge
01:05:12He's very lucky not to be sent off
01:05:13And there was a drop off in performance
01:05:15There were a few personnel changes as well
01:05:18And perhaps if we have a little look at Michael Carrick's use of his players since his time in charge
01:05:24He's actually used fewer players in the Premier League than most teams around
01:05:31In fact any other team around him equal there with Leeds and Everton and Bournemouth below
01:05:35And that points to perhaps the fact that he is showing today
01:05:39He needs to strengthen his squad with Champions League football next week
01:05:42Yeah, no, I think it was with Manchester United on the Champions League last season
01:05:45Obviously to get back in the Champions League against Liverpool last week was
01:05:50Was big for the club and today, yeah, they weren't at the best today
01:05:54But in terms of the players' use, I think what it shows is that Manchester United need to invest in
01:05:59players in the summer
01:06:00Because in order for Manchester United to compete in the Premier League next season
01:06:05In the Champions League next season, where do you want to be?
01:06:07Do you have to invest? Do you have to strengthen the squad?
01:06:09And I don't think there's any denying that
01:06:11Now, if I was a player and Manchester United wanted to sign me
01:06:14The first question I would ask is, does the manager want me?
01:06:18Who is the manager? Does the manager want me?
01:06:19So I think for Manchester United to have that clarity on who the manager is
01:06:23And listen, I think everyone knows I've been very supportive of Michael Carrick
01:06:27If Michael Carrick hadn't done the job he'd done, I wouldn't be sitting here saying
01:06:30You should give him the job
01:06:32But I think for what he's done, and he's earned his right to get that manager's job
01:06:36And I think for the club to announce him, I think they need to do it swiftly
01:06:41Because they need to get players in, and they need to get players, you know, they'll be talking
01:06:45I'm sure they will, but they need to get players in for next season to improve that team
01:06:48And the price of those players that they're looking at, if they have a good World Cup
01:06:51It only goes up, doesn't it?
01:06:52So in terms of good business sense, you want to get those players signed up
01:06:56Before they go off and play in the World Cup
01:06:58Absolutely, because they'll have their targets
01:07:00And we've seen now that, you know, he wants the players that he wants to play
01:07:05And when some of those players are out there, a weaker team
01:07:07First and foremost, I agree with you, I don't know what more Michael Carrick can do to get the job
01:07:11It's a bit farcical that he hasn't got the job already
01:07:14Just give him it, he's got the club back into the Champions League
01:07:17So back him, and then he can go on then and choose players that he wants quickly and swiftly before
01:07:21the World Cup
01:07:22But it's not that, it's other, it's players will be looking at Manchester United
01:07:26But they'll also be looking at other teams
01:07:27So what you don't want to do is have your targets and then, and lose them because you haven't got
01:07:31a manager in place
01:07:32And I think he's done everything to get it done
01:07:35And then let's start bringing players in
01:07:37And some people might say, well yeah, they've not played as many players
01:07:39Because they haven't played in as many competitions
01:07:41They've played the fewest games in their history this season, haven't they?
01:07:43But they'll be playing a lot more next season
01:07:45Yeah, they will, and listen, whether it's Michael or someone else
01:07:48They're going to have to bring players in regardless
01:07:50So it should be Michael, and let's hope it is
01:07:53Final word, okay, let's have a look at the table
01:07:55The gap at the top is now two points after Manchester City's win
01:07:58Manchester United and Liverpool stay third and fourth respectively
01:08:02Bournemouth, Brighton and Brentford remain in the race for Europe
01:08:04At the other end, both West Ham and Tottenham are still fighting for survival
01:08:08Arsenal go to the London Stadium on Sunday
01:08:11While Spurs host Leeds on Monday night
01:08:15Thank you so much Ashley and Wayne
01:08:17In a season then of surprises, here's where we stand
01:08:19Pep supporting the Hammers, Spurs might need Arsenal to do them a favour
01:08:23And Bournemouth could be in the Champions League
01:08:25And we're still no closer to knowing who's going to win the title
01:08:27Expect more twists and turns over the next few weeks
01:08:30Good night
01:08:30We'll see you next time
01:08:42We'll see you next time
