00:04:10And tell Charlie we'll drop by as soon as we can, all right?
00:04:12Right.
00:04:13Where's the girl's husband?
00:04:14We're trying to find him.
00:04:16Fine.
00:04:16Now, we'd better send out a call to pick up every 288 and 311
00:04:20we can lay our hands on.
00:04:22Let's go see the manager, huh?
00:05:07We'll see you next time.
00:05:13Let's go.
00:06:02And while the killer slept, the machinery of the law slipped into gear.
00:06:08They checked the fingerprints found at the scene of the crime.
00:06:12If the killer had ever been arrested, his prints would be on file.
00:06:15There was no record of them anywhere.
00:06:19They located the victim's husband and brought him in to identify the body.
00:06:24He'd been working all night and hadn't even known his wife was on the loose.
00:06:29Police details moved throughout the city.
00:06:32They picked up any man who had ever been connected with a crime similar to the murder in the motel.
00:06:37The suspects were taken to the identification room.
00:06:40They were booked, printed and mugged.
00:06:43It was a mixed assortment of the mild and the defiant.
00:06:48That was the routine and it went on all night.
00:06:53Meanwhile, in homicide, they went after the case from another angle.
00:06:59That's the way I see it.
00:07:00The victim was attacked from the back and stabbed repeatedly in the body with a twin-bladed object like that.
00:07:07That's the same man, all right.
00:07:09Are you sure about the type of weapon?
00:07:11Sure, I'm sure. I'll show you.
00:07:15Here are the photographs we took last night.
00:07:17Notice the position and frequency of the wounds.
00:07:20And here are the ones we took of that waitress a month ago.
00:07:23The wounds are identical.
00:07:24In each case, they were made by a thick kind of scissors about five inches long.
00:07:28At least he's consistent.
00:07:29Anything else, Doc?
00:07:31Just what you already know.
00:07:32Both victims were blonde and had alcohol in their systems.
00:07:36Don, let's have a couple of dozen photographs of the Johnson woman made up right away.
00:07:41And see how many men Brownie can lend us to canvas the bars.
00:07:45If they show the pictures to enough bartenders, one of them ought to come up with a lead.
00:07:49Right, I'll see you back here.
00:07:50You better make it to the lab. I want to talk to Charlie.
00:07:53If you get any ideas on the type of scissors, Doc, let me know.
00:07:57I'll do that, Pete.
00:08:00I'll take a couple of days until then.
00:08:03Of course, a square inch of fabric isn't much to go on it.
00:08:06But it may tell us a few things.
00:08:09Manufacturer?
00:08:10Possibly.
00:08:11We can trace the mill, may the material.
00:08:15What makes you so positive it's from the killer's suit in the first place?
00:08:19I'm not positive, but we have to start somewhere.
00:08:22We tried to check everybody that was registered in the motel room in the past week.
00:08:25And?
00:08:27And what do you think?
00:08:28Seventy-five percent of the names were phony.
00:08:30Well, that's par for a motel.
00:08:32You wouldn't say you were playing a long shot, would you?
00:08:35What do you want me to do?
00:08:36Assign a man to every motel in town just to be sure that the guests sign their right names?
00:08:40Relax, you'll put them all out of business.
00:08:43Okay, okay.
00:08:45Where'd you find?
00:08:47It's from his suit, all right.
00:08:48The threads match the traces of wool lint found under the dead girl's fingernails.
00:08:52She must have put up a pretty good fight.
00:08:54All right.
00:08:55Take a look.
00:08:56All right.
00:08:58Now, the main thing is the number of horizontal strands to the weave.
00:09:01I'd say about 80 to the inch and 100 fibers to the strand.
00:09:05For Serge, that's pretty good.
00:09:08Just saw Brownie, it's all set.
00:09:10How many minutes are you going to let us have?
00:09:11Eight tomorrow, more later if we need them.
00:09:13We'll need them, all right.
00:09:15About this material, how much would you say it cost?
00:09:18Well, it isn't cheap.
00:09:20Couldn't touch a suit like that for under 90 or 100 dollars.
00:09:23Anything else?
00:09:24Yeah, it's quite new.
00:09:26Very resilient.
00:09:28The fibers have all the bounce of a new handball.
00:09:31Another thing, there are no signs of cleaning fluid.
00:09:34All right, so the suit's new.
00:09:36It'll take months to track down everybody who's bought a blue-served suit recently.
00:09:40Would you like to borrow my microscope?
00:09:42If you had a brand new 100 dollar suit with a small tear in it, what would you do?
00:09:46Give it to the Salvation Army?
00:09:48No, I'd take it to one of those French weaving places.
00:09:54Don, coffee?
00:09:56Don?
00:09:58Will you have a bulletin sent out to every shop in town that does mending and weaving?
00:10:02Warn them to be on the lookout for a blue-served suit with a tear in it.
00:10:06I'll take care of it right away.
00:10:25Hold on, don.
00:10:27Watch out so feet, have a beautiful holiday for aство.
00:10:28All right, let's go.
00:10:30He's called Caroline Snorton Party.
00:10:34To how you resultados are.
00:10:36I've got the strengths in your cƔmarics.
00:10:36Have the talents?
00:10:39Now God you guys are doing amazing,
00:10:56Oh, my God.
00:11:28Oh, my God.
00:12:07Oh, my God.
00:12:24Oh, my God.
00:12:28Let me see, please.
00:12:37Hey, my dog's broken again.
00:13:11Hello, Carl. How are you?
00:13:12Hi, Fred.
00:13:15Say, listen, do you think you can put a coupling on the end of this for me?
00:13:18Sure. Anything else today?
00:13:20Oh, I need a couple hundred-pound sacks of vigoro.
00:13:22Mm-hmm.
00:13:28And about ten pounds of cloverseed.
00:13:30Okay.
00:13:47Who's the girl?
00:13:48Oh, that's my daughter Jane.
00:13:49She came down from Fresno to live with me.
00:13:52I think I mentioned her to you.
00:13:53Oh. Is she gonna be here long?
00:13:55Only till her husband gets back. He's been sent overseas.
00:14:02Dad?
00:14:06You want it on the phone?
00:14:07Okay, honey. Jane, this is Carl Martin.
00:14:09Hello, Carl.
00:14:10How do you do?
00:14:12Here, let me help you.
00:14:25Here, let me help you.
00:14:32Within six hours of the murder, the killer was back tending flowers as part of his normal daily routine.
00:14:41At the same time, Homicide was working on the one good remaining lead.
00:14:45The torn blue suit.
00:14:49Skilled detectives canvassed every tailor shop in town.
00:14:52On the bulletin they left with each tailor was all the information, plus a central police number.
00:14:57The plan was simple.
00:14:59If the suit were brought in for repair, the trap could be sprung within the quarter hour.
00:15:04The next move was up to the killer.
00:15:24First of all, lady, I can fix it, but it'll show, and this is too good a skirt for that.
00:15:29A friend of mine had a tear in her dress, and she took it someplace, and had it mended, and
00:15:33it didn't even show where the work was done.
00:15:35So why can't you mend my skirt?
00:15:37Look, lady, when material is burned or a piece is ripped out like this, there's nothing you can do.
00:15:43When you ripped it out, you left a piece behind.
00:15:46You see, there's a piece of material missing.
00:15:50Look, you can see for yourself it doesn't fit together.
00:15:54Now, I have to take the rest from your hand to leave in the missing space.
00:15:58That's the only way I've ever done.
00:16:49I have to take the rest from your family to stop your face.
00:16:52Thank you, Mr. Koi.
00:16:57The End
00:16:59Pete, are you busy?
00:17:00No, not really, Captain.
00:17:01I'll talk to you.
00:17:02Don?
00:17:09What's up?
00:17:09Well, I don't have to tell you the spot we're in over the killings of Mrs. Rollins and Mrs. Johnson.
00:17:13I've heard of them.
00:17:15You can't blame them.
00:17:16We haven't turned up anything new in three weeks.
00:17:19We know.
00:17:21Haven't you fellas got a theory, a hodge, something to get us out of this?
00:17:26All right, see what you think of this.
00:17:28We have a kind of a theory based on the pattern in these two cases.
00:17:32A pattern?
00:17:33It's a time pattern, mostly.
00:17:36Mrs. Rollins was killed March the 3rd, approximately 3.30 a.m.
00:17:41Mrs. Johnson at 3 o'clock in the morning on April the 2nd.
00:17:45That's right.
00:17:46Both early in the month.
00:17:48Maybe he likes the position of the moon, then.
00:17:51Or maybe he gets paid at the end of the month,
00:17:52and he likes to wait until he has enough money to go out and style.
00:17:55I don't know.
00:17:56Pete, it's the end of the month now.
00:17:58Yeah, I know.
00:18:00And if our theory is correct,
00:18:02you can tell them that the department is going to have another dead woman on its hands.
00:18:06And soon.
00:18:33Oh, it's you, Carl.
00:18:36Is your father here?
00:18:36No, he isn't.
00:18:37Is he something I can do for you?
00:18:39No.
00:18:40I don't think so.
00:18:41All right, Carl.
00:18:42Excuse me, won't you?
00:18:48What do you think of the way I butted this Hoover under the California?
00:18:53It's not bad for an amateur, is it?
00:18:55Very good.
00:18:56How do you like working here for your dad?
00:18:59Well, it takes my mind off Jerry, and it keeps me from being too lonesome.
00:19:04Say, Carl, do you see a pair of pruning shoes over there someplace?
00:19:26It's a pair of pruning shoes over there.
00:19:29That's the pair of pruning shoes over there.
00:19:39Thanks.
00:19:45That's good.
00:19:47That's good.
00:19:51Is there anything I can tell Dad for you?
00:19:53Well, one of my customers asked me for a rare tropical plant.
00:19:56I thought maybe your father could help me.
00:19:58Want me to give you a good suggestion?
00:19:59Okay.
00:20:00Why not a Kedleia orchid?
00:20:02I understand with proper care they do very well around here.
00:20:05Have you got one in stock?
00:20:06Well, no. Dad sends to Hawaii for them.
00:20:09However, this is the right season.
00:20:11We ought to be able to get one in a couple of weeks. Is that too long?
00:20:14Well, he said there was no rush. Order one for me, will you?
00:20:17All right, Carl.
00:20:18Thanks for the suggestion.
00:20:19Not at all. Goodbye.
00:20:32I probably won't be home until late, honey. Don't wait up for me.
00:20:35If you don't do any better than you did last week, don't come home at all.
00:20:39You sure you don't want to come along?
00:20:41No, Dad. I think I'll stay and finish the books.
00:20:43Okay. Well, I left a sprinkler on. Turn it off in about 15 minutes, huh?
00:20:47All right, Dad. Good night.
00:20:58All right, Dad.
00:21:43All right, Dad.
00:22:15Carl, what are you doing around here this time of night?
00:22:20I was just passing. I saw the light on. I thought I'd pay my bill.
00:22:23Oh. Well, that'll save me having to mail it out to you.
00:22:30How come you're not watching Fred Bowe?
00:22:33This is his regular night, isn't it?
00:22:35Yes, but if I don't get these bills out, he won't have enough money to bowl.
00:22:39Let's see. Here's your account, Carl. You owe us exactly $34.45.
00:22:46Yeah, that's right. Are you going to work very late tonight?
00:22:50Well, I have to get out all these bills.
00:22:52You got a way of getting home?
00:22:54Oh, I usually hop the bus at the corner. It's just a short ride.
00:22:57I'll be glad to wait for you. I have my car.
00:23:01Well, that's very sweet of you, Carl, but I wouldn't want you to waste your evening waiting around for me.
00:23:07I don't mind. We have nothing better to do.
00:23:10We might even stop somewhere and have a drink.
00:23:12Let's see. That's $34.50, $35.
00:23:22I don't know what time I'll be getting off, Carl.
00:23:25It's still early.
00:23:54What time was it?
00:24:03Right now, Carl.
00:24:05Let's look.
00:24:06I nope.
00:24:14Let's go.

00:26:55Do you often have this kind of trouble with your car?
00:26:57No.
00:27:01No.
00:27:02It hasn't happened.
00:27:12Let's go.

00:28:55Let's go.
00:29:01I better go.
00:29:06Oh, my God.
00:29:50Hey, what are you doing down here?
00:29:52Oh, you know how it is, officer.
00:29:54Don't you know you're not allowed to park here?
00:29:57We were just leaving, but I got stuck.
00:30:00All right, I'll give you a hand.
00:30:06What's the matter with her?
00:30:09I'm afraid she had too much to drink.
00:30:10She dozed off.
00:30:12Dozed off?
00:30:14Get out.
00:30:14I'll take a look at her.
00:30:15Sure.
00:30:16Go ahead.
00:30:22Go ahead.
00:30:32Go ahead.
00:30:35Go ahead.

00:35:28About 30, 6 feet tall, 175 pounds, gray flannel suit, no hat.
00:35:35Sorry, Pete, but that's the best I could do. I never really got a good look at him.
00:35:39You said his behavior seemed normal.
00:35:43Well, it did at the end of the day, but that's the best I could do.
00:35:44Okay, we'll call you when we need you at the line-up.
00:35:49I got the report on the fingerprints.
00:35:51Yeah?
00:35:52It's our man, all right.
00:35:54How you doing, Sam?
00:35:55Okay, there's his right foot.
00:35:56Let's have a look at it.
00:35:57Got a good left foot, too.
00:35:59We'll check him with Charlie.
00:36:01We're finished here.
00:36:25Mr. Martin.
00:36:29Mr. Martin.
00:36:39Can I fix it for you later, honey?
00:36:41Don't forget.
00:36:55He wears a nine-and-a-half-piece shoe.
00:36:57Same size I wear.
00:36:59Well, here's something a little more interesting.
00:37:01These are the cigarette butts found at the motel murder site a month ago.
00:37:05And these are the ones found in and around the car this morning.
00:37:09Now, do you notice anything peculiar?
00:37:11They all have lipstick markings, and there are about twice as many short ones as long ones.
00:37:15That's right.
00:37:17Take a look.
00:37:19Notice the lipstick on the long one to your right.
00:37:22It's uneven and spread pretty thin.
00:37:26Now, look at the short one.
00:37:28It's almost twice as thick.
00:37:32In each case, the murdered woman smoked the short one.
00:37:35But she left the long one in her own mouth and then passed it over to him.
00:37:39Excuse me.
00:37:43Hello.
00:37:44Welcome, speaking.
00:37:46Pete?
00:37:47Yeah, he's here.
00:37:50Okay, I'll tell him.
00:37:53I want you down at the Central Produce Market.
00:37:55They have a guy who thinks he saw your man.
00:37:57Let's go, Don.
00:38:05In the turmoil and confusion of the market, the killer's flight had gone unnoticed, except for one man who thought
00:38:12he'd seen him cross the street and hail a taxi.
00:38:17Detectives then checked every cab office in the city.
00:38:20At each one, they received the same reply.
00:38:23No fare picked up in that area.
00:38:25For all his carelessness, the killer had been swallowed up in the trackless jungle of the city.
00:38:32And out of that jungle, as the notoriety increased, came the creatures.
00:38:38Strange, forgotten souls.
00:38:40Eager to confess to crimes they did not commit.
00:38:43In their desire to bask briefly in the spotlight of the headlines, they were willing to admit to anything.
00:38:51Each day brought new confessions and still more versions of how the crime had been committed.
00:39:06And so the admissions of guilt continued.
00:39:09Every cop on the beat had at least one habitual, whom he could count on to confess to any and
00:39:14every crime.
00:39:15It was time-taking, discouraging work.
00:39:18But every story had to be checked.
00:39:20Every letter and phone call investigated.
00:39:23There was always the chance that this one might be it.
00:39:28The only one who enjoyed it was the killer.
00:39:33It became evident they needed more than a physical description to pin him down.
00:39:37They had to get inside his brain to see what made him tick.
00:39:41To try and determine in advance what his moves would be,
00:39:44they consulted Dr. Werner, the police psychiatrist, authority on the criminal mind.
00:39:50Well...
00:39:51I'll say that homicidal maniacs fall pretty much into three categories.
00:39:57There's the sadistic psychopath,
00:40:00the epileptic equivalent,
00:40:02and the paranoic.
00:40:04Now let's consider the sadistic psychopath first.
00:40:09Now you'll recall, no doubt, that the wounds inflicted on all three parties were pretty much alike.
00:40:17According to the coroner's reports,
00:40:19any one of these wounds might have caused death immediately.
00:40:22There was no real attempt to torture him.
00:40:25So I think we can forget about sadistic psychopaths.
00:40:29Good enough.
00:40:30Then let's consider the epileptic equivalent.
00:40:34He kills in frenzied pits and seizures at unpredictable times.
00:40:40His methods are buried and irregular.
00:40:44Now according to the motorcycle officer who saw him, your man was perfectly calm.
00:40:48And the records indicate a possible time pattern in his attacks and regularity in his methods.
00:40:55Which leaves us the paranoic.
00:40:58Which leaves us the paranoic.
00:40:58And I think he's the man you're after.
00:41:01Now to illustrate my point, let's take a briefcase history.
00:41:05Well, I won't say it's his, but it might be.
00:41:09A boy who is emotionally too weak.
00:41:13Maybe without parents or friends or family.
00:41:18He's lost nobody to hold on to.
00:41:22But he finally finds a wife or a girl and becomes entirely dependent on her.
00:41:28Well, she turns out to be no good.
00:41:30Now he still clings to her.
00:41:32But then one day she runs off with another man who shows her a good time.
00:41:37The boy is desperate because he finds himself lost again.
00:41:42He suffers a tremendous shock.
00:41:44And that does it.
00:41:47His world collapses and he has to get even.
00:41:51The balance of his mind tips so that his emotions are transferred to a pathological desire
00:41:57for revenge on the girl or her prototype.
00:42:01Blondes.
00:42:02Under 30.
00:42:03About the same height and weight.
00:42:05And he'll keep on killing the same type of girl until you catch him.
00:42:10And so they had a little more to work with.
00:42:13Especially when the psychiatrist's information dovetailed with their first real break.
00:42:18A Glendale cabbie remembered picking up a fare at the produce market on the morning of the murder.
00:42:23He'd been afraid to talk before.
00:42:26There's a local ordinance that prohibits out-of-town cabs from picking up a fare inside city limits.
00:42:31Lieutenant Hamilton?
00:42:32Yeah, that's right.
00:42:33That's me.
00:42:33My name is Jackson.
00:42:34I'm with a rapid transit cab company.
00:42:36A size of work.
00:42:37Glad to know you, Sergeant.
00:42:38I've got some information for you fellas, but it's got to be off the record.
00:42:41It's got to be off the record.
00:42:42Forget it.
00:42:42It's about this crazy killer you guys are after.
00:42:48I'm at the produce market one day on my regular beat and I'm picking up a guy, see?
00:42:52It's a funny thing about this guy.
00:42:54I drop him off at the Union Station.
00:42:56I'm pulling up for a stoplight at the corner.
00:42:58I'm lighting up a cigarette and I take a look behind me and I see this guy making a beeline
00:43:02for a different cab.
00:43:03What kind of a cab?
00:43:04A yellow.
00:43:06Yellow.
00:43:06You sure?
00:43:07Yeah.
00:43:14Here it is.
00:43:15I knew he'd have it somewhere.
00:43:16Cab number 803.
00:43:17Picked up a fare at 605 at Union Station.
00:43:19Drove him to 4th and Hamilton.
00:43:21Thanks.
00:43:22Sure.
00:43:25Let me see.
00:43:28She does look a little familiar.
00:43:31But I see so many faces it's hard for me to-
00:43:33Try and think.
00:43:34I am trying.
00:43:37Yeah, I remember now.
00:43:40There was a dame in here that looked like that.
00:43:43Only a little blonder, I think.
00:43:46She was in here for a couple of hours.
00:43:49Gave some guy the come on and left.
00:43:53It was pretty late, I think.
00:43:55And he went out after her.
00:43:57What kind of a guy?
00:43:58What did he look like?
00:43:59Oh, just an average sort of guy, I guess.
00:44:02After all, it's been about a month.
00:44:04And a lot of other guys have been in here since.
00:44:06Don't you remember anything about him?
00:44:07His suit, maybe?
00:44:09Yeah.
00:44:10It was dark brown.
00:44:13No.
00:44:14Kind of a blue.
00:44:16I think.
00:44:19Thanks.
00:44:21Or was it, uh...
00:44:28So from now till the end of the operation,
00:44:30you're all assigned to us for special duty.
00:44:32Each of you's been chosen
00:44:34because of a close resemblance
00:44:35to the type of woman this man is likely to go for.
00:44:37It's your job to see that he does go for you.
00:44:40We've been able to figure his range of operations
00:44:42to an area within a radius of 15 miles.
00:44:45We've also classified the bars
00:44:46where he's likely to pick up his next victim.
00:44:49He's expected to strike in the next few days.
00:44:51Now for procedure.
00:44:53A plainclothesman will be detailed to each of you.
00:44:56You will never be out of his sight.
00:44:58You've just been given a good general description
00:45:00of the criminal on those cards.
00:45:02Don't waste time on anybody who doesn't match.
00:45:05When you have what appears to be a suspect,
00:45:07play him along until he makes a definite move.
00:45:10Then signal your detective to make the arrest.
00:45:13What would you call a definite move?
00:45:15Well, you'll have to decide that for yourself.
00:45:17We won't have the time of the men
00:45:19to pull in everybody who makes a friendly pass.
00:45:22On the other hand, always remember
00:45:23that you may be dealing with a homicidal maniac.
00:45:26The criminal seems to have a habit
00:45:28of letting the woman light a cigarette for him
00:45:30in her own mouth.
00:45:32Watch for that.
00:45:33Now, Don will give you your definite silence.
00:45:36Well, Betty, you're first.
00:45:37You go with Sergeant Lewis.
00:45:39And Ginny, I'm going to tag along after you.
00:46:08That's a good idea.
00:46:09I like the beach when it isn't so crowded.
00:46:12Let's go.
00:46:25Hey, what's the big idea?
00:46:26I'm a police officer.
00:46:27You're under arrest.
00:46:28Under arrest?
00:46:29What for?
00:46:30I haven't done anything.
00:46:31What about it, Betty?
00:46:32Book him on 836-3.
00:46:34You heard the lady.
00:46:35Let's go.
00:46:40Look, like I told you,
00:46:41I just stopped in for a drink after the show.
00:46:44I tell you, you got me wrong.
00:46:46I'm a happily married man.
00:46:48Look, that's fine.
00:46:49I bet your wife's proud of you.
00:46:51You've got to believe me.
00:46:52I never had any trouble with the police before
00:46:54in all my life.
00:46:55I've never been in jail before.
00:46:57Nothing like this ever happened to me before.
00:46:59Oh, a couple of coffee tickets and things like that.
00:47:02Okay, you can go.
00:47:04Honestly, officer, you've got to believe me.
00:47:06I'm telling you that you can go.
00:47:08I know, but you don't understand.
00:47:11Oh.
00:47:17Well, now I can go.
00:47:19You bring me, you bring me all the way down here
00:47:21and you fingerprint me and you,
00:47:22you embarrass me and then you tell me I can go home.
00:47:27Well, I got a half a mind to sue the city for false arrests.
00:47:30You wouldn't really do that.
00:47:32I wouldn't?
00:47:33Don't kid yourself, bud.
00:47:35I know my rights.
00:47:36You're not going to push me around, you flat-footed...
00:47:39You want to be jailed as a public nuisance?
00:47:42Oh, no, sir, I...
00:47:43I have a squad car, I'll deliver him to his front door.
00:47:46If he gives you any trouble,
00:47:48make sure his wife finds out why we brought him home.
00:47:52Thank you, sir.
00:47:58They weren't all quite so innocent.
00:48:01The next night, they picked up some parole violators carrying guns.
00:48:06They're back where they can't use them now.
00:48:09But it took time to pull every suspect in for printing and mugging.
00:48:13And time was running out.
00:48:15From now on, the girls would have to take greater risks.
00:48:18Let the potential killer show his hand more before they signaled for help.
00:48:31So that's the whole story.
00:48:34Twice a month, he goes away on a business trip and...
00:48:37And leaves you home the toilet of thumbs.
00:48:39It's not so bad.
00:48:41At least I get to meet a lot of interesting people this way.
00:48:44I bet you do.
00:48:47How about another drink?
00:48:51What are we wasting our time around here for?
00:48:54I don't know.
00:48:56Come on, let's go.
00:49:21Come on, let's go.
00:49:23Come on, let's go.
00:49:42Comfortable?
00:49:43Mm-hmm.
00:49:45I could go to sleep right here.
00:49:49Well, why don't you?
00:50:12How much farther do we have to go?
00:50:14Oh, nothing.
00:50:17What kind of place is it?
00:50:27Just a nice little place.
00:50:43I don't like it.
00:50:45It's too quiet.
00:50:48Let's go back to a town.
00:50:51What?
00:50:52After all the trouble I've gone to getting here?
00:51:09Why don't you turn in here?
00:51:12Why don't you?
00:51:21THE END
00:52:04Why'd you turn off the lights?
00:52:27What are you going to do?
00:52:34Nothing, but you're going to walk home from here.
00:52:36Maybe this will teach you there's still some guys who respect another man's home.
00:53:20What are you going to do?
00:53:52What are you going to do?
00:53:56What are you going to do last night?
00:53:57Anything important?
00:53:58We turned one of them over to robbery.
00:54:00Prince matched some from a liquor store hold up last week.
00:54:03The other two are in the clear.
00:54:05I still think what happened to Virginia last night is a classic.
00:54:08Driving a girl up on the hill is just to give her a lecture on morals.
00:54:12Return, Hamilton.
00:54:14Yeah?
00:54:15Where?
00:54:17Right.
00:54:17Hold the car.
00:54:18We'll be right down.
00:54:20I just found a blonde in the riverbed and stabbed to death.
00:54:23Let's go.
00:54:24Let's go.
00:54:38Let's go.
00:54:40Let's go.
00:54:41Let's go.
00:54:44Let's go.
00:54:47Let's go.
00:54:48Let's go.
00:54:49Let's go.
00:54:58Let's go.
00:55:00Let's go.
00:55:01Let's go.
00:55:07Let's go.
00:55:14Let's go.
00:55:15Let's go.
00:55:32Let's go.
00:55:34Let's go.
00:55:36Let's go.
00:55:41Let's go.
00:55:58Let's go.
00:56:08What do you have?
00:56:10Plenty.
00:56:11You'd be surprised what you can find on an old spring.
00:56:14Keep talking.
00:56:15It's from the murder weapon, all right.
00:56:17Fresh blood all over it.
00:56:18Signs of older blood, too.
00:56:21This baby's been used before.
00:56:23Probably three times before.
00:56:25What's it from?
00:56:26Garden shears.
00:56:28That ties in.
00:56:29That ties in.
00:56:31You see this?
00:56:33Yeah, what is it?
00:56:35Nitrate of soda.
00:56:37Urea.
00:56:39Monium phosphate.
00:56:41These are all basic ingredients of commercial fertilizer.
00:56:44We've analyzed a few surface crystals,
00:56:46and we'll get the complete formula eventually.
00:56:48Anything else?
00:56:50Well, we're just getting started.
00:56:52Take a look.
00:56:56Wood fibers.
00:56:57From the bark of some small tree or bush.
00:56:59We're still checking.
00:57:01Nice work, Charlie.
00:57:02You guys delight me.
00:57:04Well, sometimes we even delight ourselves.
00:57:11Oh, one more thing before you go.
00:57:18This guy must have gotten around quite a bit.
00:57:22We have evidence of three different types of soil.
00:57:25What do you mean, one more thing?
00:57:27Just give me a breakdown on each type.
00:57:29Right here.
00:57:39When the breakdown disclosed that the three types of soil found in the spring
00:57:43came from different sections of the city,
00:57:45they knew that gardening was not the killer's hobby.
00:57:49It had to be his profession.
00:57:52With that information to go on, the clues began to add up.
00:57:57The first step was to find the exact make of garden shears used as the murder weapon.
00:58:02It meant a rundown of every hardware store, supply house, and distributor of garden tools.
00:58:08It was a lot of legwork, but it had to be done.
00:58:12Somewhere in the city, there was a pair of shears that the spring would fit.
00:58:19In the laboratory, analyzing the components of the fertilizer identified with the murder weapon, called for a different routine.
00:58:27Not as much running around, but plenty of midnight oil burning.
00:58:31Eventually, they were able to break down the specimen solution to the exact chemical formula.
00:58:36From there, it was a simple step to determine the brand name.
00:59:00So, we finally made it.
00:59:06It's a efficient little thing.
00:59:08Where'd you find it?
00:59:09A present for you.
00:59:09Trendle Tool Company.
00:59:11Here's a list of their distributors.
00:59:13I didn't know there were this many hardware stores in the world.
00:59:16What about nurseries?
00:59:17About a hundred of them, Pete.
00:59:20Well, try a shortcut.
00:59:22There's no guarantee that our man buys his tools and fertilizer at the same place,
00:59:27but we might as well check the place of selling both products first.
00:59:44Good morning, Carl.
00:59:45Hi, Mr. Kent.
00:59:46Did you find out about that plant we discussed, the orchid plant?
00:59:48The Catalia?
00:59:49Well, it hasn't come in yet.
00:59:51You said there was no rush.
00:59:52But that was some time ago.
00:59:53My wife's birthday is the 10th of this month.
00:59:55Well, it ought to arrive any day, sir.
00:59:57I don't want to disappoint Mrs. Kent.
00:59:59Be sure it's planted by then, Carl.
01:00:01I'll see the news, sir.
01:00:09By the 10th.
01:00:10Yes, I know it's important.
01:00:13Well, I'm sure it'll be in by then.
01:00:16All right, I'll do what I can.
01:00:18Goodbye.
01:00:19Who was that?
01:00:21It was Carl Martin.
01:00:22He's worried about the Catalia orchid we ordered for him.
01:00:26It's all my fault.
01:00:27I told him it would be in by now.
01:00:28Well, you better call the express office again.
01:00:30All right, Dad.
01:00:33That's funny.
01:00:34What's the matter?
01:00:36Our honeymoon picture's gone.
01:00:38Sure you didn't take it home with you?
01:00:41No, it was right there on top of the safe.
01:00:44It must be around here somewhere.
01:00:46Here, honey.
01:00:47Come on, make your call.
01:00:48I'll help you look for it.
01:00:50All right.
01:00:57There never was a good shortcut to a killer.
01:01:00They found that out.
01:01:0387 places handled both the make of shears and the fertilizer they were after.
01:01:0620 of them in the valley alone.
01:01:09They checked those first and drew 20 blanks.
01:01:14It was the same routine time and again.
01:01:17Find the outlet, question the manager, cross the place off the list.
01:01:25Well, I'm terribly sorry, Carl.
01:01:27They promised me they'd deliver it today.
01:01:31I know tomorrow's too late, but sometimes they do make an extra delivery in the afternoon.
01:01:37I know I feel awful about it.
01:01:41Well, isn't there some other plant we...
01:02:02Well, it finally got here.
01:02:04Yes, it's a shame.
01:02:06You know, Carl wanted it for first thing in the morning.
01:02:08Hope he drops in before we close.
01:02:11Say, maybe I ought to deliver it.
01:02:13Where does he live?
01:02:14You think he should?
01:02:15I'll be back before closing time.
01:02:17What's his address?
01:02:18It's in the book.
01:02:19All right.
01:02:20You finish watering and I'll go look it up.
01:02:22Okay, honey.
01:02:49I will see.
01:03:08Which one is next?
01:03:11Saunders Nursery.
01:03:49I'm going to die.
01:04:17Carl, it's Jane Saunders.
01:04:22I'm going to go.
01:04:56THE END
01:05:40Hi. Carl. I was wondering where you were. You didn't look very hot. Didn't you hear me call you from
01:05:50the house? No. What were you doing there?
01:05:54Well, I have good news, Carl. The Cadillac orchard arrived. That's great. Let's go in and look at it. Well,
01:06:01I can't right now. Dad's all alone and I have to get back.
01:06:04It'll only take a minute.
01:06:08All right, Carl. Just for a minute.
01:06:23Hello. Are you the manager of this place?
01:06:25That's right. What can I do for you?
01:06:27You'd like a little information.
01:06:29I'll be right with you as soon as I turn off this water.
01:06:37It's very nice. Thanks for bringing it up.
01:06:41That's all right. I'm just glad it arrived in time.
01:06:47So, now if you'll excuse me, I do have to go.
01:06:50Why don't you stay and have a cup of tea?
01:06:52Really, Carl, I can't.
01:06:57You mean you won't?
01:06:58No, it isn't that. It's just that I have to get back.
01:07:03Why don't you just sit down?
01:07:05Why don't you sit down?
01:07:12Why don't you sit down?
01:07:17Why don't you sit down?
01:07:21All right, gentlemen. What do you want to know?
01:07:24You sell this make of shears and Vigoro fertilizer. Is that right?
01:07:29Yeah, I have been for some time. Why?
01:07:30You recall selling a pair of these shears or that brand of fertilizer
01:07:34to a man approximately six feet tall, 175 pounds, brown hair, about 30 years of age?
01:07:42Let me think.
01:07:44He's probably a gardener.
01:07:48I don't know. Six feet tall.
01:07:54Young and six feet tall.
01:07:59It sounds like Carl Martin. Why do you want to know?
01:08:03Well, it's nothing serious. We just want to ask him some questions.
01:08:06Oh. Well, I know he uses Vigoro.
01:08:08What about the shears?
01:08:10I sold it with some of his tools.
01:08:13I'd have to check the books. It'd take me some time.
01:08:16Go ahead.
01:08:18Okay.
01:08:37You know, you're the first company I've had since I've lived here.
01:08:40In that case, I am sorry. I can't stay any longer.
01:08:43It's not the kind of place you invite a girl to.
01:08:46I don't know. There's no reason not to.
01:08:49No? Have you taken a good look around?
01:09:09Well, let's see now.
01:09:14Sanders, Lawton, Mates...
01:09:18Here it is. Carl Martin.
01:09:20Yeah, he bought a pair of shears about four months ago.
01:09:23That's all right. We'll take your word for it.
01:09:26What's his address?
01:09:28632 Hill Road. Thanks.
01:09:31Has Carl done something wrong?
01:09:33No, no. It's just a routine check.
01:09:35The reason I asked it...
01:09:38I was just thinking about something.
01:09:40What is it?
01:09:41My daughter Jane is making a delivery at his house right now.
01:09:44Where it is, Don?
01:09:45It's around Chavez Ravine. Thanks very much.
01:10:04Thanks for the tea, Carl. It was very good.
01:10:08I'm sorry I have to run.
01:10:11That's all right.
01:10:16My wife was a lot like you.
01:10:18Your wife?
01:10:20Oh, I forgot.
01:10:22You didn't know I was married, did you?
01:10:45I'm sorry.
01:10:46I'm sorry.
01:10:47I'm not.
01:10:49I'm better off without her.
01:10:50Please, Carl, it's getting late.
01:10:52Mr. Martin.
01:10:54Mr. Martin.
01:10:55Sit down.
01:10:56I've got something very interesting to show you.
01:11:11Hello, Mr. Martin.
01:11:13What are you doing here?
01:11:15Shh.
01:11:16I'll wait my dog.
01:11:18Then you better go home and play.
01:11:20But you told me I could play anytime I wanted to.
01:11:23I don't kill what I said.
01:11:24I don't want you around here now.
01:11:26Go on.
01:11:26Go on.
01:11:48You can have your picture back.
01:11:50My picture?
01:11:52I won't need it anymore.
01:11:57I'm going out of your car.
01:12:00Don't make a sound.
01:12:01I won't.
01:12:26Oh, 66.
01:12:27It's probably up around the top of the hill, Pete.
01:12:31There it is.
01:13:25You must be around somewhere.
01:13:27The tea's still warm.
01:13:28The girl's been here, too.
01:13:30Check the facts.
01:13:31I'll be back.
01:13:32Got it.
01:13:40Nobody out in the yard.
01:13:44Take a look at this.
01:13:50That's it, all right.
01:13:52There was a kid out front.
01:13:54Let's see what she knows.
01:14:09Let's see what she knows.
01:14:12Honey, do you know the man who lives in that house?
01:14:16That house?
01:14:18Who lives there?

01:14:27My mommy won't let me take anything from strangers.
01:14:31Your mother's right.

01:14:49What's his name?
01:14:52Mr. Martin.
