00:00:00Look out! Oh, look at that!
00:00:02Absolutely phenomenal!
00:00:04Rudy Alcorn!
00:00:06Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:48Well, it may be dry January for some, but our cup overfloweth on Match of the Day tonight.
00:00:53Six games from a brizzy Premier League Sunday, as well as December's Goal of the Month and all the goals
00:00:59from yesterday.
00:01:00And joining me, Shea Given and making his Match of the Day debut, Gary O'Neill, who scored twice on
00:01:04his Premier League debut.
00:01:05So we are hoping for a similar performance tonight.
00:01:07Yeah, it went all downhill from there, but yeah, it was a good start.
00:01:10No pressure, no pressure.
00:01:11A win for Arsenal yesterday opened up a seven-point lead at the top of the table.
00:01:16Manchester City were looking to reduce that gap against managerless Chelsea, who parted company with Enzo Mareska on New Year's
00:01:22Day.
00:01:22Steve Wilson was at the Etihad.
00:01:26In his long managerial career in three countries, Pep Guardiola has never gone successive seasons without winning a league title.
00:01:35That record is under threat. They sit seven points behind Arsenal.
00:01:39It's eight seasons since Chelsea were champions, in which time they've had six full-time managers.
00:01:45Another is incoming.
00:01:46City make three changes to the eleven which drew at Sunderland on New Year's Day.
00:01:52In come Guardiola, Rodri and Reinders for Ake, Nico Gonzalez and Savinho.
00:01:58Callum McFarlane's time in charge of Chelsea will be short, but he makes five changes to the draw with Bournemouth.
00:02:04Caicedo is suspended again, Sanchez injured, Fofana ill.
00:02:08In come Jürgensen, Badia Shield, James, Pedro Neto and Jrau Pedro.
00:02:15Chelsea have lost eight of their last ten games in this stadium in all competitions.
00:02:21And I don't think many people would favour them here today.
00:02:26Estevão for Chelsea finds Enzo Fernandes.
00:02:29Pedro Neto is on. Here he is.
00:02:35Matthias Nunez ahead of him.
00:02:38Good ball in that and a chance for Estevão.
00:02:40It's blocked really well by Guardiola.
00:02:44That's the best chance of the game so far and it goes Chelsea's way.
00:02:48And now Manchester City have the situation under control and that's a great ball from Matthias Nunez.
00:02:56What a pass that is.
00:02:57Erling Haaland arriving, Phil Foden arriving.
00:03:00Here's Foden.
00:03:01Brilliantly done.
00:03:04Well, this would have been a sensational counter-attacking goal.
00:03:08Great awareness by Foden.
00:03:12Well, they've done really well, Chelsea.
00:03:14They've defended sturdily.
00:03:21Bernardo Silva trying to twist Gusto.
00:03:26And he's succeeded in doing so.
00:03:27And he gets the shot away.
00:03:31Well, great work in a very small area from Bernardo Silva.
00:03:35Manages to work that bit of space quite beautifully.
00:03:39Gets a bit of curl but not enough dip.
00:03:48Cherokee's header, Rodri, Foden, Haaland.
00:03:53Deflected!
00:03:54And really well saved by Jurgensen.
00:03:58That big deflection could well have looped over the top of the Chelsea keeper.
00:04:03But he's adjusted here to make a very good save, Philip Jurgensen.
00:04:19Heavy touch match in Pong but Rhys James is there.
00:04:22He's only held it up.
00:04:25And Rodri and Erling Haaland!
00:04:28Oh!
00:04:29Goodness me!
00:04:31You don't get any closer than that!
00:04:35And Chelsea get a throw in.
00:04:40Oh!
00:04:40And the post gets a rattling from Haaland.
00:04:44Oh, brilliant really.
00:04:46Very unlucky.
00:04:48His next goal will be his 150th for the club.
00:04:52It won't be long in coming, that's for sure.
00:05:01Chelsea have given the ball away.
00:05:04And Cherokee exchanges the touch with Rodri.
00:05:09Badia Shields touch.
00:05:12Rinders!
00:05:16Great finish!
00:05:19That is a pretty devastating finish from Tijani Rinders.
00:05:24And Manchester City break the deadlock.
00:05:28With four minutes of the first half remaining.
00:05:31Well, this really is a splendid goal.
00:05:34Haaland the threat, Badia Shields kept it from him.
00:05:37But played it straight into Rinders.
00:05:40A little flick off the Chelsea defender as it goes in.
00:05:45Rinders hits it beautifully.
00:05:48Might just be a touch off the toe of Badia Shield.
00:05:51But it flew into the roof of the net.
00:05:54And Manchester City lead by a goal to nil.
00:06:00O'Reilly's cushioned header down.
00:06:02Gusto's nicked it away from Rodri.
00:06:04Well won back by Guardiol.
00:06:07Now Rodri.
00:06:13And Cole Palmer.
00:06:15Guardiol is down.
00:06:17Enzo Fernandes to Palmer's left.
00:06:19And he plays him in.
00:06:21Enzo Fernandes.
00:06:22Lovely little pirouette.
00:06:23And Pedro Neto has missed it.
00:06:25With the goal gaping.
00:06:28And it really should be one each.
00:06:31Well, Guardiol was on the ground throughout that whole Chelsea attack.
00:06:36Which should have resulted in an equalising goal.
00:06:40Enzo Fernandes did well here.
00:06:45And Pedro Neto simply has to get that on target.
00:06:54Enzo Fernandes got to boot in but Bernardo Silva would not be denied.
00:06:57Erling Haaland here.
00:06:59Great pace.
00:07:00Tearing away from Canaba.
00:07:02Brilliant run.
00:07:03Gablon.
00:07:07Haaland still.
00:07:14And O'Reilly has failed to keep the ball in play.
00:07:18I'll talk about explosive here.
00:07:20Erling Haaland.
00:07:22Collecting the ball.
00:07:23A couple of metres inside his own half.
00:07:25And just driving on with enormous threat.
00:07:30Good block by Badia Shield.
00:07:34Gianluigi Donnarumma.
00:07:35Forward to Erling Haaland.
00:07:37Beautifully cushioned.
00:07:38Cherki.
00:07:39He's got the pace to get away from Santos.
00:07:41Bernardo Silva's there.
00:07:43Brilliant recovery from Harto.
00:07:45Well, that's outstanding.
00:07:48Great flick here from Erling Haaland.
00:07:51Good pace by Cherki.
00:07:53Too much for Andre Santos.
00:07:54Look how much ground Jor-El Harto made up.
00:08:05Dilap and Coltama and Enzo Fernandes getting forward.
00:08:09Here's Jor-El Harto.
00:08:17And Dilap.
00:08:19Good turn.
00:08:19Tight angled.
00:08:20Donnarumma save.
00:08:22And those nagging doubts about these three points from Manchester City continue.
00:08:28Chelsea have arguably been the more dangerous side in the second half.
00:08:33Well snubbered by the Italian.
00:08:39Certainly some anxiety around the Etihad right now as Enzo Fernandes finds Pedro Neto.
00:08:48And Jor-El Harto.
00:08:50And Jor-El Harto.
00:08:50Harto's cross missed by Coltama.
00:08:53And Dilap couldn't get anything really meaningful on it.
00:08:59That was a real opportunity for Coltama.
00:09:03Chelsea have taken only two points from their last eight league games against Manchester City.
00:09:08They still live in hope of getting one from this.
00:09:11Rhys James.
00:09:12Six minutes were indicated.
00:09:14Three of them have been played.
00:09:15Here's Gusto.
00:09:16Oh excellent.
00:09:17Got away from O'Reilly.
00:09:18There's four in the middle for Chelsea.
00:09:20Gusto.
00:09:21Dilap couldn't get there.
00:09:23Surely from Enzo Fernandes for Chelsea.
00:09:26It's 1-1 in stoppage time.
00:09:29And you cannot say they don't deserve it.
00:09:34Donnarumma is beaten.
00:09:36Fernandes scores.
00:09:38Chelsea and Arsenal celebrate an Enzo Fernandes equaliser.
00:09:45There is a check of course.
00:09:48Possible offside.
00:09:51Enzo Fernandes at the second attempt.
00:09:54Trotted it into the back of the net.
00:09:57And the goal will stand.
00:10:01It's Manchester City one.
00:10:03Chelsea one.
00:10:06Pep very frustrating finish to the game.
00:10:09It felt like the control got away from you a little bit.
00:10:12Because first half you were 1-0 up.
00:10:15It could have been more.
00:10:16Control go away for what?
00:10:18Well I felt you were completely in control of the game at half time.
00:10:22And they changed shape a little bit.
00:10:24And the momentum of the game changed a bit.
00:10:28I'm not agreeing.
00:10:29But it's okay.
00:10:29They scored a goal.
00:10:30That's why you analyze the results.
00:10:32Of course they make a step up.
00:10:33We make it more intense in the pressing.
00:10:35They had the chances because we lost two balls in the beginning of the second half.
00:10:40But if you believe they achieved the momentum, okay, you maybe knows better than me.
00:10:45We started really well.
00:10:47Especially the first half.
00:10:48The second half it was a bit more open.
00:10:50It went more up and down.
00:10:51And still we created some big opportunities.
00:10:54And yeah, disappointed that we conceded the goal so late.
00:10:58So we all know the week we've had.
00:11:00But the boys were focused.
00:11:02And yeah, in life you either drop your heads or you keep going.
00:11:06And for us we knew what the game plan was today.
00:11:09We knew what we wanted.
00:11:10And yeah, we done well to get the point.
00:11:12It's credit to the players.
00:11:14Imagine what they're feeling at half time.
00:11:17Manchester City were the much better team in the first half.
00:11:19Interim coach.
00:11:20All the change that's gone on.
00:11:21All the injuries we've had.
00:11:22But the character they've shown.
00:11:23And they've shown it all week.
00:11:25Like Reece, Enzo tossing.
00:11:26But the leaders in the group have really pulled it together.
00:11:29So it's a special, special group of players.
00:11:33A frustrated Pep Guardiola there.
00:11:34Because City have dropped four points in their last two matches.
00:11:37But Callum McFarlane there had a game plan to frustrate them.
00:11:41And it worked largely in the first half.
00:11:42Yeah, a rookie manager.
00:11:43You know, one chance in a lifetime to manage against Pep Guardiola perhaps.
00:11:46A weight they had.
00:11:47They had nothing to lose.
00:11:48But he had a game plan.
00:11:49He definitely had.
00:11:49And City couldn't find a way through.
00:11:51They did eventually with rounders.
00:11:53But at the same time, this was a game plan here.
00:11:54We've seen this for most of the first half.
00:11:56You see a 5-4-1 formation, Gabby.
00:11:59And now you're asking City, are they good enough to play through these lines?
00:12:02Play through the first.
00:12:03They're really nice and compact.
00:12:05And you know Callum McFarlane would have worked on this leading up to the game.
00:12:08It's a big day for him.
00:12:09But again, there's a lot of turmoil as he says at the football club.
00:12:11But there's a clear message.
00:12:12You see the five again.
00:12:13This time, Reinders receives the ball.
00:12:17Achimpong jumps out.
00:12:18But you see then, this opportunity, they do get in.
00:12:20But again, they've got enough players back in a defensive position to clear the danger.
00:12:24You see in the middle.
00:12:25We'll see Haaland.
00:12:26You know, 2v1.
00:12:26There's plenty of bodies back.
00:12:28Enough to defend the cross.
00:12:29And again, they look comfortable for long periods of the first half.
00:12:33Defending against Manchester City, who we know how good they are going forward.
00:12:36I said to Gary Offer, I said, at some stage, you'll have to throw a punch when you go to
00:12:40Manchester.
00:12:40You see here, they commit six bodies forward, Gabby.
00:12:43That's great if you can get a shot off or get a goal.
00:12:46But what it does do, if you won the tackle, which they do in the edge of the box,
00:12:49now you're buying in trouble.
00:12:50They do get away because they won the tackle high up the pitch.
00:12:52And you think they've escaped the danger.
00:12:54But they never got back into that 5-4-1 formation that we spoke about just previously.
00:12:59And City, again, we know how decisive they are in the forward positions.
00:13:02They move the ball really quickly, get forward.
00:13:04And again, there's a bit of luck at the end of this because it comes off the defender.
00:13:08You see a 4v4 high up the pitch.
00:13:10They're really stretched now at this point, Chelsea.
00:13:12But they nearly get away.
00:13:13A bit of luck, a bit of break.
00:13:14And you think Reinders on your left foot.
00:13:16You know, it's a brilliant finish from him because he's right-footed.
00:13:19And it's a fantastic finish.
00:13:20But again, defensively, I think Chelsea were really strong today in that first half.
00:13:24Pep might have alluded to that.
00:13:26He didn't think there was a momentum shift.
00:13:27But we certainly think there was one.
00:13:29Because 1-0 down at half-time, McFarlane wasn't afraid to make tactical changes.
00:13:33No, I think fair play to him because the easiest part of a manager's job is when you've got time.
00:13:37So when you've got the week to build your prep, like the bit that Shea's just covered there,
00:13:40you've got days to work on that on the training ground.
00:13:42But when it's match day and it's half-time and you're 1-0 down and you need to make a
00:13:46call,
00:13:46he didn't back out of making that call.
00:13:48You know, to take Esteval off, to shift the shape.
00:13:51You can see it here.
00:13:52They've moved Gusto back into his high right-back position rather than being on the left.
00:13:57Esteval has been withdrawn.
00:13:59They've put Santos on to play in that double pivot.
00:14:01And it's allowed Enzo to play higher up the pitch.
00:14:03And then he used that freedom, Enzo, to cause Man City real problems.
00:14:07You see here, they regain the ball.
00:14:09Cole Palmer rolled in off this right-hand side like he did so well against PSG in the Club World
00:14:13Cup.
00:14:13And now Enzo just using that running power.
00:14:16You know, and he's able to break forward and show great quality.
00:14:18And then Neto will be disappointed with that because I know he's better than that from those areas.
00:14:23And then the introduction of Liam De Lappe as well had a real impact on the game.
00:14:27Caused the centre-backs of Manchester City problems.
00:14:29You see Enzo again here with that running power driving the team forward.
00:14:32Wouldn't have been able to do that in the first half from the lower position he was in.
00:14:36Bit of a longer clip, but they managed to sustain the pressure.
00:14:39Get Enzo on the ball again in a high position.
00:14:41And a great ball into Liam De Lappe.
00:14:43And he did cause the centre-backs problems when he came on Liam.
00:14:46Although Manchester City did lose their two in Guardiola and in Diaz.
00:14:51They did cause the two that came on real problems.
00:14:54And then Gusto, high right-back.
00:14:55He's much better on that side than he is on the left.
00:14:5894th minute, Enzo still using his power and his running power to get himself in a position
00:15:04that allows Chelsea to take a well-earned point away from the Etihad.
00:15:07Which is no mean feat for an interim manager on his first day in charge.
00:15:11Yeah, sixth goal of the season. Look what it means to him there.
00:15:13And there were some lovely scenes at the end as well.
00:15:15We saw with Rhys James obviously making him go over to the Chelsea fans.
00:15:19And you can see as a manager that must be enormously gratifying.
00:15:22When you see the difference your changes have made.
00:15:24Yeah, and that should not be underestimated because that's difficult.
00:15:27He alluded to it in his post-match speech there around how the players would be feeling.
00:15:32You know, you've been completely dominated by Manchester City who just do that to teams.
00:15:35And then to be able to make a change and be able to make the players believe in that change.
00:15:39And then to produce numbers like that, XG, shots, everything up, touches in the opposition box.
00:15:45So Pep might not have felt the momentum change quite so much, but the stats definitely showed that there was
00:15:50one.
00:15:50Yeah, it might be a short tenure as interim manager because reports are, and we understand that,
00:15:55Liam Rosinia is already in London ready to be announced as Chelsea manager tomorrow.
00:15:59The Strasbourg manager currently where he's been managing and doing fairly well, Shea as well.
00:16:06153 matches in his managerial career today, including Hull. So not the most experienced.
00:16:11No, but I think this is Liam's dream. I think all his life is that he's managed at the very
00:16:15highest level.
00:16:16And at Chelsea is one of the biggest jobs you'll get in the Premier League and maybe in world football.
00:16:20And I think he's ready. He's managed 153 games. He's done his apprenticeship and he's ready to go.
00:16:26He managed a young Strasbourg team as well. Got them into European competition.
00:16:30And I think he'll be buzzing. You talk about the squad of players that Chelsea have.
00:16:35I know they've spent a lot of money, but they've spent well. He's worked with young players at Strasbourg before.
00:16:39And I think he's eager to jump into this position.
00:16:42The group own Strasbourg and Chelsea. They know how he works. They like the way he sets his team up
00:16:46there.
00:16:47He knows how they work. That's important as well.
00:16:49Yeah, it will be important. And that will be a key part to him taking the role, I think.
00:16:52And he's, you know, the Premier League's tough and he'll find that out.
00:16:55But it's much easier doing it with Chelsea and the top players that you have available to you.
00:16:59There may be an introduction to the Premier League for a promotion with a newly promoted side.
00:17:03So he's going to get a fantastic opportunity at a top club.
00:17:05And obviously we'll see very soon whether he's ready to grasp it.
00:17:09Thank you. Five more games to come from Sunday after December's goal of the month.
00:17:15I'm good at it.
00:17:23It's Cherki again.
00:17:25Pass comes here to Diaz.
00:17:27He's...
00:17:27Oh no, what a goal!
00:17:31What a strike!
00:17:32That was Vincent Kompany-esque.
00:17:35Well, it was a belter.
00:17:46Wilson.
00:17:48Oh, what a goal!
00:17:53The link-up play is absolutely sumptuous here.
00:17:58It is perfection.
00:18:07A bit of space here for Morgan Rodgers.
00:18:09Might have a go at goal.
00:18:10And it's a brilliant strike as well.
00:18:17Rodgers in a lot of space.
00:18:19And how about that for a finish?
00:18:25It's wild curse.
00:18:27It's got me feeling like it's gone.
00:18:33Oh, what a hit from Senghori!
00:18:39What a strike!
00:18:41Well, that's an absolute belter.
00:18:42Always looks good, doesn't it, when he comes in off the post?
00:18:49What a free kick, which a chance of hope will be a profitable one.
00:18:54Rhys James!
00:18:55Oh, it is!
00:18:57It's outstanding from Rhys James!
00:19:01Because that was inch-perfect.
00:19:09Again, he's given the ball in a precarious position, but he's kept hold of it.
00:19:16And Morgan Rodgers has kicked it in.
00:19:18Head down.
00:19:20It's Rodgers!
00:19:23It's an absolute ripper.
00:19:26He should never score from there.
00:19:28From that position, Rodgers in red-hot form.
00:19:36Dallin with the long throw.
00:19:40Valtimada's head.
00:19:41Dorgun!
00:19:47What a memorable way to score your first Manchester United goal.
00:19:59So impressive.
00:20:05It's did that well, though.
00:20:09Stack.
00:20:10Super ball from him.
00:20:11Out to Aronson.
00:20:14Up this forward here leads.
00:20:16Aronson.
00:20:17Calvert-Lewin!
00:20:23It's a fabulous team goal.

00:20:53Having won three of their last four, Fulham faced a Liverpool side unbeaten in seven in the Premier League.
00:20:58Stephen Wyeth, watch this one.
00:21:01As the temperature has plummeted, Fulham and Liverpool have stayed hot.
00:21:06Two form sides.
00:21:08The hosts endeavour to keep it up with three changes.
00:21:11Kenny Tete is injured, so Timothy Castagne replaces him.
00:21:15Issa Diop returns and Tom Cairney's reward for the equaliser at Palace is a rare league start.
00:21:22Liverpool's form is their best since spring, but they too are stretched.
00:21:26A minor hamstring issue means no Ugo Eketike.
00:21:29Cody Gagpo starts instead.
00:21:31Alexis McAllister and Miloš Kyrkjez replace Jeremy Fringpong and Andy Robinson.
00:21:40Underway a bit behind schedule today at Craven Cottage.
00:21:43A 15-minute delay due to a medical emergency.
00:21:47Not necessarily a fixture you would associate with Premier League heritage,
00:21:51but Fulham against Liverpool in recent times has been a blast.
00:21:57Curtis Jones.
00:22:00Gagpo's made his run and the flag has stayed down.
00:22:03Cody Gagpo is in.
00:22:06The shot has only just bobbled wide.
00:22:09And it's the kind of chance that really should have at least resulted
00:22:14in a testing of the Fulham goalkeeper, Bernd Leno,
00:22:17could watch it go harmlessly white.
00:22:21Lina Slott side on their best run of unbeaten form
00:22:26since their last visit to Craven Cottage.
00:22:29When Fulham ended a 26-match run unbeaten
00:22:33with a 3-2 win.
00:22:37A lovely flip, Raul Jimenez.
00:22:39Wilson is in here and has fired in, but from an offside position.
00:22:47Well, Fulham have really bided their time before looking to pounce on Liverpool.
00:22:52And it very nearly happened for them perfectly.
00:22:55Raul Jimenez towards Wilson now.
00:22:58That is going to require a much, much closer inspection.
00:23:03On-field decision was offside.
00:23:07But now the VAR Andy Madley is going to get involved.
00:23:12Because Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkhez both look
00:23:16like they might have been playing Wilson on-site.
00:23:20And Fulham are about to receive some very good news.
00:23:24Some very welcome news.
00:23:27Because the on-field decision was wrong
00:23:29and Fulham do lead
00:23:32courtesy of a former Liverpool player.
00:23:35Harry Wilson in sparkling recent form in front of goal
00:23:39has scored again.
00:23:41Well, for a moment it looked like it was too good to be true
00:23:44when Wilson was bearing down on goal.
00:23:46That was certainly the initial verdict of the referee's assistant.
00:23:52But confirmation, Virgil van Dijk, the one that was playing him on.
00:23:58And that splendid finish, beyond the reach of Alisson,
00:24:02is the goal to make it Fulham 1-0.
00:24:06Since the start of November,
00:24:08only the top three in the Premier League
00:24:10have picked up more points than Fulham.
00:24:17Charles Lai remains an option.
00:24:20Fulham remain well-organised.
00:24:27Mjobojlai, charged down by Smithrow, corner kick.
00:24:37Mjobojlai, and headed against the crossbar,
00:24:41Anderson there.
00:24:42Now appeals for a penalty.
00:24:44Fulham survive.
00:24:48McAllister head in hands.
00:24:50Knows how close he was to levelling things up.
00:25:00Bradley.
00:25:02Pouncing on a loose ball and driving at Fulham.
00:25:04And finding Florian Vertz.
00:25:08And once again,
00:25:11as the ball finds the back of the net,
00:25:15Liverpool discover that it was from an offside position.
00:25:17Florian Vertz this time.
00:25:19The unlucky player in red.
00:25:22And apparently did tremendously well.
00:25:24Arguably deserved an assist for his contribution,
00:25:27but Vertz was just beyond Issa Diop.
00:25:30This is just being cleared up.
00:25:33Just in case.
00:25:35Diop's trailing leg was beyond
00:25:37the outstretched right boot of Florian Vertz
00:25:40at the critical moment.
00:25:44Once again,
00:25:45the on-field decision is going to be overturned.
00:25:49And Liverpool have an equaliser.
00:25:51And Florian Vertz has another Liverpool goal.
00:25:54It has been delivered at a critical moment.
00:25:59Belated jubilation in the away end.
00:26:01It's a muted celebration from Liverpool
00:26:03who know there is still work to be done.
00:26:06Issa Diop adjudged to have just been playing.
00:26:10Florian Vertz onside.
00:26:13And just as in the first half of Fulham,
00:26:16Liverpool's goal has taken some unpicking.
00:26:19But the decision is to award it.
00:26:22And it's Fulham 1, Liverpool 1.
00:26:27They'll want more than a point now.
00:26:30So dominant have his side been in this second half.
00:26:35Bradley.
00:26:39Robinson.
00:26:42Superpass.
00:26:43Val Jimenez looks to be in.
00:26:45And Alisson has come.
00:26:46Not dealt with it.
00:26:47Wilson.
00:26:48Oh.
00:26:49Off the bar.
00:26:50Who'll get there first?
00:26:51Virgil van Dijk.
00:26:54So close Fulham to regaining the leap.
00:26:57The direct approach.
00:26:59Nearly working so effectively.
00:27:02Harry Wilson looking to add to his first half goal.
00:27:05Denied by the crossbar.
00:27:06And Van Dijk it was.
00:27:09Who made sure that he got to the loose ball.
00:27:13The unbeaten runs have taken Liverpool into the top four.
00:27:15And Fulham into European contention themselves.
00:27:19Which of the two.
00:27:21That's the greater desire.
00:27:22In the quality.
00:27:23To turn.
00:27:25The draw into three points.
00:27:28Time running out.
00:27:30But there is still time.
00:27:33Kravendare.
00:27:36In the Bradley.
00:27:38For Frimpong.
00:27:39Quality cross required.
00:27:42And that is a quality cross.
00:27:45Which looks to have produced a match winning moment for Cody Gagpo.
00:27:53Liverpool.
00:27:54Liverpool lead.
00:27:55Having been behind.
00:27:57And in stoppage time at Craven Cottage.
00:27:59Appeared to have got the job done.
00:28:02The man asked to fulfil the role.
00:28:04Of centre forward today.
00:28:06Has responded with a goal.
00:28:08At a critical moment.
00:28:11A vicious delivery.
00:28:13That Gagpo was alert to.
00:28:16Showing the instincts required.
00:28:18To step forward.
00:28:21Late on in the game.
00:28:22And score for Liverpool.
00:28:24A goal.
00:28:25That looks to have secured for them.
00:28:27A fifth win in eight.
00:28:32Well having scored.
00:28:33And having been cautioned as a consequence.
00:28:36Cody Gagpo is going to be withdrawn.
00:28:39But he can leave with the acclaim of the travelling support.
00:28:44They feel as though it's job done.
00:28:51Robinson's throw.
00:28:52To Kevin.
00:28:56And then we'll feel defeat is harsh on them.
00:28:58Harrison Reid from distance.
00:29:03An exceptional goal.
00:29:05From the most unlikely source.
00:29:08A howl and well moment from Harrison Reid.
00:29:12Just as the points look gone for Fulham.
00:29:16They have responded.
00:29:18Almost immediately.
00:29:20In the groove.
00:29:21Fulham.
00:29:21And they simply don't know at the moment when they are beaten.
00:29:25Sent on.
00:29:26To provide some midfield energy late in the game.
00:29:29And instead.
00:29:30It is Harrison Reid.
00:29:33Who has scored the most improbable late equaliser.
00:29:38A near perfect strike.
00:29:39Better than anything he could possibly have dreamed of delivering.
00:29:43An exceptional goal.
00:29:45To make it Fulham 2.
00:29:47Liverpool 2.
00:29:51Have you ever hit a ball better than that?
00:29:53It fell nice off the foot.
00:29:54And then I was just praying it went in the top corner.
00:29:56To see it dip in.
00:29:57Obviously circumstances as well.
00:29:58What an amazing feeling.
00:30:01I will tell you I've been practising and training.
00:30:02The boys know it.
00:30:04They've seen it as well.
00:30:05So I just had to get my chance.
00:30:06He says he's been practising.
00:30:08Is that what you sent him on to do?
00:30:10It's not the first time that you see it.
00:30:11To be honest.
00:30:12Yesterday of course is a moment that they use in the end of the minus one session to do it.
00:30:17Something I of course if you ask me of course I didn't put him thinking that he's going to score
00:30:21that goal.
00:30:22But of course that is poor inspiration from him and he deserves all the credits.
00:30:26I think we fought very hard in the second half.
00:30:28We were dominating at moments.
00:30:30Trying to create chances to go through.
00:30:33And at the end I scored I think 90 plus 5.
00:30:36The moment I sat down on the bench they scored.
00:30:40Wonderful goal to be fair.
00:30:41We were 2-1 up and having to defend a long throw in which we expected.
00:30:46And we brought Joe Gomez in because he's of course he's very good for the air.
00:30:51But they didn't take it long.
00:30:54They took it short.
00:30:55And it was an incredible strike.
00:30:57The boys should deserve to get a reward once in a while.
00:31:01But unfortunately we don't get it.
00:31:03And the only ones to blame is ourselves as well.
00:31:05Because we concede in these moments.
00:31:08But fighting so hard to be 2-1 up.
00:31:11It's unbelievable that every time then the ball goes in in the end.
00:31:15But it was a truly magnificent goal.
00:31:19Harrison Reid coming in with the heroics of Harrison Ford with that goal.
00:31:23At 92 minutes he comes on the pitch.
00:31:2596 minutes.
00:31:25I think you just need to wax lyrical.
00:31:27I don't think Marco Silva brought him off the bench for this.
00:31:30Probably just to maybe sew it up.
00:31:31Or to try and give it a bit of balance in midfield if Liverpool break away.
00:31:34But he set up for a long throw.
00:31:36He's Arnest Slotts.
00:31:37But Reid comes into the picture.
00:31:38You know he let the pictures do this justice.
00:31:40This is just a phenomenal strike.
00:31:42It's quite funny Harrison said after that.
00:31:44I've practiced this in training.
00:31:45But again, that just roider-over stuff it really is.
00:31:47To get that much dip in movement and Swaz Alisson's got absolutely no chance at all.
00:31:52And see if it just pops up as he hits it there.
00:31:54This is an unbelievable strike.
00:31:56I mean, Gary, you maybe weren't overly happy with the Liverpool defending.
00:31:59Yeah, and I understand they're set up for a long throw.
00:32:01But as soon as Fulham don't throw it long, you have to react to this 4v2.
00:32:06You know, some of them Liverpool players in the penalty area need to get up and get some pressure on
00:32:10the ball.
00:32:10You can't leave that 4v2 for that long.
00:32:12And of course, you don't expect to be punished like this.
00:32:14But boy, did Harrison Reid punish them a hell of a strike.
00:32:17I'm not sure many of his practices went where that one went.
00:32:20But the one that mattered did.
00:32:21Now, there's no Alexander Isak we know for Liverpool for a few months.
00:32:25Eketike out at the moment.
00:32:27Could be back later this week for the Arsenal game on Thursday.
00:32:29It's a short-term injury.
00:32:30So, Cody Gakpo playing in a more central role today.
00:32:34What did you make of his performance?
00:32:35Yeah, I didn't mind it.
00:32:36Actually, you know, I think Arnaslav talked about maybe in front of the goal we struggled.
00:32:39But I think Gakpo done well.
00:32:40You keep an eye on him here on the left-hand side.
00:32:42But he actually bends his run here as a centre-forward you want to do.
00:32:46And he gets through on goal.
00:32:47I mean, it's just not a great finish at the end of that on his weaker left foot.
00:32:49Of course, we know him cutting in on his right.
00:32:51He's very strong.
00:32:52But again, look how central the goal.
00:32:53And again, this is a brilliant hitter.
00:32:55Heads it back where it came from.
00:32:56Just a little bit unlucky that it's come back off the woodwork.
00:32:58But great movement for him.
00:33:00And then again, we show that he's involved in the goal.
00:33:01I think latter part of the stage, he went out to the left side, Kieson went up more central.
00:33:04But he's not happy just to be getting involved in the build-up.
00:33:07Gabby's thinking, right, can we score a goal?
00:33:08He makes himself 94, 95 minutes.
00:33:11Brilliant ball from Frimpong.
00:33:12And where is he?
00:33:12Number nine in the middle of the six-yard box where you want him to be.
00:33:15And he tucks it away nicely.
00:33:17And again, he thinks he's got the winning goal at this stage before Mr. Reid stepped up and stole the
00:33:22party off him.
00:33:23But I was happy with Gakbo how he played.
00:33:25It says he's played before there for PSV.
00:33:27He's played there for the Netherlands as well.
00:33:29So I think he knows the position.
00:33:31OK, there was a lot of noise online about Florian Wurz's goal.
00:33:34Of course, during the match, it was checked for offside.
00:33:36And to the naked eye, there are angles where it does look offside.
00:33:41Now, from a semi-automated kind of opinion and position, they're happy with the tolerance that they have with the
00:33:48lines, that it is onside.
00:33:50Because the advantage when the lines touch between the last player and the defender is about five centimetres.
00:33:56And it's given to the attacking player that kind of advantage.
00:33:59All the best, Gary.
00:34:01Gabby's done quite well explaining that there.
00:34:02Yeah, I've had my own battles with VAR and trying to guess as a manager whether it's on or off.
00:34:08But they did make the lines thicker four years ago, I think, to try and give an advantage.
00:34:13But I think all of us would say that on the naked eye, Florian Wurz's foot looks ahead of Diop's
00:34:19there.
00:34:20Florian Wurz looks like he's just drifted into that lighter cut of grass.
00:34:24Whereas we would say Diop looks firmly planted in the darker cut.
00:34:28So you would say that this is probably going to be disallowed for offside at this moment.
00:34:32But then when it then turns to the semi-automated view, you can see it doesn't quite look the same.
00:34:39And it looks like Florian Wurz has managed just to stay the right side of Diop.
00:34:45And whether that tolerance, we don't have the privilege of seeing the lines here,
00:34:48but whether that tolerance of about five centimetres has led to this goal standing is a possibility.
00:34:54But Florian Wurz needs the goal, to be fair to him.
00:34:57Fulham won't be so pleased with it, but a big goal for Florian Wurz.
00:34:59Marco Silva's reaction seemed quite measured.
00:35:02Yeah, I guess the Harrison Reid goal probably takes the edge off it a little bit for him.
00:35:07And I think as managers and coaches, in the end, you have to accept that the technology is there to
00:35:12do its job.
00:35:13And we have to accept that at the moment it's doing the best job that it possibly can.
00:35:17And it's being interpreted in the best way possible.
00:35:19You mentioned that it's been a few years now that that has been the way they've been viewed.
00:35:22And actually, the Premier League is the only major league left in Europe that is doing that.
00:35:25The others are still kind of working or are working to the toenail.
00:35:29Yeah, so a strong possibility that maybe would have been disallowed in some of the other major leagues around Europe.
00:35:33But as it is at the moment, the technology has got that one right for us and cleared up a
00:35:37very tight decision.
00:35:38You say cleared up. I mean, we're talking about that.
00:35:39Yeah, yeah. Cleared up to the better it can.
00:35:42OK. Next, Leeds United and Manchester United renew their War of the Roses as the Reds cross the Pennines to
00:35:49play the Whites of Yorkshire.
00:35:50Your commentator is Guy Mowbray.
00:35:54After today, every team in the Premier League will have faced all the others this season.
00:35:59The opponents Leeds look for first are the ones they've had to wait for longest.
00:36:05There are two changes to the Leeds line-up from their New Year's Day draw at Liverpool,
00:36:09with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor coming back in to start.
00:36:13Lucas Mecha is a substitute.
00:36:15Captain Ethan Ampadu ruled out suspended.
00:36:18And Jadon Bogle is out with a calf injury.
00:36:20For the visiting United, only one difference to their team in names as Leni Jorow replaces Joshua Zergzi.
00:36:27He's on the bench alongside five teenagers with a whole raft of senior players once again absent.
00:36:38Leeds waiting to play.
00:36:39Manchester United pales away compared with waiting to beat them.
00:36:43They haven't done that in nine Premier League meetings and in seven overall
00:36:47since Jermaine Beckford's 1-0 winner for then League One Leeds at Old Trafford.
00:36:5216 years ago yesterday.
00:36:56Lamans, nice easy stroke of the ball.
00:37:00Offside flag is raised as Matthias Cunha has a go and scores in fine style, but it's not going to
00:37:06count.
00:37:11And I'm pretty sure he was offside.
00:37:16Maybe not Matthias Cunha, but I'm pretty certain Czesko was and he went for the ball to try and help
00:37:22it on.
00:37:23Whether he touched it or not is largely irrelevant.
00:37:2922 minutes in and Leeds United pay tribute to Joshua Pick who died suddenly aged 22 recently.
00:37:38A Leeds season ticket holder from six years old.
00:37:41His dad and sister are here at the game today and we wish them all well.
00:37:50Justin, Calvert-Lewin shielding his eyes from the low sun.
00:37:54Here's Strouk.
00:37:57Stack.
00:37:59Calvert-Lewin!
00:38:01Off the post!
00:38:04So close to scoring again.
00:38:07It was inches away from being 1-0 Leeds through their number nine once more.
00:38:12Just what a striker in Dominic Calvert-Lewin's form would want.
00:38:16Only needed just a little bit more head on ball.
00:38:23That clears Bourne out.
00:38:25Cunha.
00:38:26Shaw.
00:38:28Two in the box for Cunha.
00:38:30Dorgou can't attack it though.
00:38:32It's turned behind by Goodmanson.
00:38:35And after a spell of Leeds being in the ascendancy, it might be Manchester United's turn for a bit now.
00:38:43Look Shaw to take the corner.
00:38:45It's a deep one.
00:38:47And it's Casimiro and saved by Lucas Perry.
00:38:50Brilliant reaction stop.
00:38:53Casimiro on to Lenny Uro just trying to divert it.
00:38:57All he could do there was get it goal-bound.
00:39:00He did that.
00:39:01Lucas Perry in the right place.
00:39:05A game that needs a creative spark.
00:39:08A game that needs a player of Eddie Gray's abilities.
00:39:11He made his Leeds United debut 60 years ago.
00:39:151st of January 1966.
00:39:173-0 against Sheffield Wednesday.
00:39:19He scored one.
00:39:20And he made two before assists were a thing.
00:39:23What a player.
00:39:26Strunk.
00:39:27Heaven has a look.
00:39:29Aronson is closing in.
00:39:30And Aronson is there first.
00:39:32And finishes.
00:39:36Ellen Road has erupted.
00:39:43Brendan Aronson's non-stop running has got reward.
00:39:48Aidan Heaven caught cold.
00:39:52A moment for all these young and old to absolutely love.
00:39:57Aronson has not always been flavor of the month here.
00:40:01Right now at this minute.
00:40:03He's the toast of the town.
00:40:06He wanted it just that bit more.
00:40:08But then he had to find the composure to put it in.
00:40:12Brilliantly dispatched.
00:40:13And it's Leeds United 1, Manchester United 0.
00:40:17And Manchester United now feel the need to make a change.
00:40:21Lenny Uro is off.
00:40:22Joshua Zerkesi comes on.
00:40:24Well, Aidan Heaven has performed really well
00:40:27in the seven games now in a row that he's started.
00:40:30But there was an aberration.
00:40:32You can't switch off in the Premier League.
00:40:34And in this fixture of all fixtures,
00:40:37you absolutely must be on it at every second.
00:40:42Zerkesi looking for Cunha.
00:40:45And Cunha has slid in and slotted it past Lucas Perry.
00:40:49It's 1-1.
00:40:52Leeds turn to get it all wrong in defense.
00:40:56This is one of huge importance for Manchester United.
00:41:01Cezco won it, laid it off to Zerkesi.
00:41:04He played a perfectly weighted pass for Cunha.
00:41:08And not for the first time, Cunha found himself free.
00:41:11And just like Aronson at the other end,
00:41:14well, how good was the finish?
00:41:17The game has been plugged in from 0-0 to 1-1
00:41:23in just under three minutes.
00:41:30Okafor on his way.
00:41:32Calvert-Lewin in the middle, but so is Heaven.
00:41:45Beal got a help on to that.
00:41:47Good try, good save.
00:41:50Lemons forced to spring into action
00:41:52after Okafor's acrobatic attempt.
00:41:58Great try.
00:42:01So Alex Ferguson was 84 on New Year's Eve.
00:42:05He was never going to miss this one.
00:42:09Dalo.
00:42:13Lugate.
00:42:14Zerkesi.
00:42:16Now Matthias Cunha.
00:42:17Luke Shaw is an extra center forward in this move.
00:42:20Here's Zerkesi.
00:42:21Zerkesi across.
00:42:22Cezco's effort is wide.
00:42:25He made good contact with the ball.
00:42:28Just maybe hit it too straight.
00:42:31Zerkesi planted firmly wide of the post.
00:42:33Big chance for Manchester United to take the lead.
00:42:39Beal's header goes straight to Cunha.
00:42:41Zerkesi gets it through the legs for Zerkesi.
00:42:44Now it's Dorgut.
00:42:46Cunha wants it.
00:42:47Cunha has the try.
00:42:48Oh, was it saved or just wide?
00:42:53Look at the curl on that from Cunha.
00:42:57So, so close to making it 2-1 Manchester United.
00:43:02It's Justin who heads forward to Nyonto.
00:43:07Lovely ball from Nyonto.
00:43:09Here's Stack.
00:43:10Piru to the right.
00:43:11Stack finds him.
00:43:13Piru!
00:43:14Under the roof.
00:43:17Made his mind up before the ball came to him.
00:43:20That that's what he was going to try to do.
00:43:24Not far away at all.
00:43:27And it is full time at Elland Road.
00:43:30Leeds draw for a third game in a row.
00:43:34There's seven unbeaten now.
00:43:36But Manchester United have only lost one of their last eight.
00:43:40They're much more resilient away from home these days.
00:43:43Leeds United won.
00:43:45Manchester United won.
00:43:47We are a bit disappointed because it was possible also to win this game.
00:43:50You could feel that we were a bit tired today and also we're missing many key players.
00:43:56It was probably football-wise not our best performance, but we found still a way to defend really well and
00:44:01to go in need.
00:44:02And it was definitely possible also to win this game for that.
00:44:05We are a bit disappointed, but on the other hand, it shows also and says a lot that you are
00:44:09disappointed with just one point against Man United as a promoted side.
00:44:12An important point for us, we talk about this, the resilience, and then everyone knows like it's so important to
00:44:19the players who miss today.
00:44:21But we have a big character in the team.
00:44:24We need to use the shirt and then show everything on the pitch.
00:44:27And I think we did it and then I hope we can do much more the next game.
00:44:31Yeah, we're going to take it with a ton of confidence because you know where we've been the last month
00:44:35of games that we've had.
00:44:36I mean, going to Liverpool, coming back home, you know, two away games and Sunderland too.
00:44:40They're not easy places to go to.
00:44:42So to stay unbeaten, I think we could even have more points from these games.
00:44:45So we just need to keep going from here.
00:44:47Well, after the match, Ruben Amarin said this in his press conference.
00:44:52I just want to say that I'm going to be the manager of this team, not just the coach.
00:44:56And I was really clear on that.
00:44:59And that is going to finish in 18 months.
00:45:01And then everyone is going to move on.
00:45:06That was the deal.
00:45:07That is my job, not to be a coach.
00:45:10If people cannot handle the Gary Nevels and the criticisms of everything,
00:45:16we need to change the club.
00:45:18I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach.
00:45:23And every department, the scouting department, the sport director needs to do their job.
00:45:26I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on.
00:45:30The question he was responding to, Ruben Amarin, was about control of the club.
00:45:35And that answer clearly would point to discord with regard to the hierarchy at the club.
00:45:41Yeah, yeah, he's not happy.
00:45:42It looks like there's a bit of a, it feels like, we don't know, obviously.
00:45:45It feels like there's a bit of a fallout between himself and, of course, Jason Walcox, the director of football.
00:45:50And he said in numerous cases, two or three times there, that he's the manager, not just the coach.
00:45:54So what that tells me is he's overseeing players coming in, he's overseeing maybe players going out,
00:45:59who comes to the club, who doesn't.
00:46:00Oh, he would like to.
00:46:01He would like to, but maybe that's not happened.
00:46:03Maybe it's been, you know, we're in January now, the promises of maybe players coming in.
00:46:06Maybe the goalposts have changed.
00:46:08And a lot of, you know, Gary may tell you better, but a lot of managers, you know,
00:46:10they are head coaches now and they've got heads of heads doing other things.
00:46:14But, you know, look at the great Sir Alex Ferguson, he managed that football club like no other.
00:46:18I look at maybe Anunay Emery at Aston Villa.
00:46:20It feels like he's got the final say in everything that comes and goes in Aston Villa and look where
00:46:24they're at in the league.
00:46:25And also, I'd say if Man United won on Weston 8 against Burnley, they're up the fourth.
00:46:29And if you look at their bench in the last couple of weeks, they've got a bunch of kids on
00:46:31there.
00:46:31So I don't think he's doing a bad job, but it does feel there's a bit of a falling out
00:46:35behind the scenes, perhaps.
00:46:36What do you think, as a manager sitting in that chair, his aim was?
00:46:39What was the end game?
00:46:40Yeah, no, I think when you deliver a press conference like that, you're obviously trying to make a point.
00:46:45He's unhappy about something.
00:46:46It's very difficult for us without knowing the inner workings at the football club and the conversations.
00:46:50That go on what he's unhappy with.
00:46:52I agree with Shea that there's not much for him to work with at the moment.
00:46:56If you look at that bench that Manchester United are naming, they are fifth or sixth in the league.
00:47:01And maybe they're not underachieving too much with what he's got available to him.
00:47:04So I understand his need and his want for more backing.
00:47:08But it is a dicey game to play when you're sat in that chair and you start to criticise people
00:47:12above you, maybe when it's not gone overly well for you over the last 18 months.
00:47:17But, you know, he's an intelligent guy, big boy, I'm sure he knows what he's doing.
00:47:20And if he feels he needs to make a point in that moment, then he has every right to do
00:47:24so.
00:47:24I guess recent example, Enzo Morescu, it didn't quite work out for him, did it?
00:47:27No, it goes one way or the other.
00:47:28You normally get some support or it can end fairly abruptly.
00:47:31On the pitch, the player that they're looking to at the moment for creativity and attacking threat, you know very
00:47:36well, Matthias Cunier, from your time at Wolves.
00:47:38Yeah, one of my favourite players that I worked with at Wolves, we did an awful lot of work with
00:47:42him on arriving in attacking areas that really suited him.
00:47:46So Manchester United have used him in a similar zone, but it does still feel like he's carrying a lot
00:47:51of the burden in the attacking.
00:47:52I know they're missing players at the moment.
00:47:54Fantastic finish, he's unlucky that Jesko's just not quite managed to get back from an offside position, but shows his
00:47:59quality.
00:48:00But here, just a lack of attackers on the pitch for Manchester United.
00:48:04And, you know, Cunier needs people, he needs runners to be able to find, and he'll find them.
00:48:09His right foot's one of the best in the business.
00:48:10So there he's only got Jesko and Dorg, who's really late to arrive.
00:48:14So a fantastic ball into a dangerous area from Cunier, but not enough attackers for him to play with and
00:48:19combine and create things.
00:48:21Here, Dallow playing outside, poor ball inside, and now Aronson punishes them on the counter-attack.
00:48:26And this was the catalyst, really.
00:48:28This was the thing that sparked a reaction from Amory and Manchester United.
00:48:31Zerksy comes straight off the bench, and literally, instantly, you see three attackers who are able to combine.
00:48:37No full-backs playing higher up the pitch.
00:48:39Three out-and-out attackers, and they're able to combine.
00:48:42Jesko sets Zerksy, Cunier makes that running behind, and we did loads and loads of finishing drills with him.
00:48:48And his right foot, when you get him in and around the goal, is deadly.
00:48:50He hits the net time after time.
00:48:52Same again, Zerksy, Zerksy, they work it between them, and then they find the third link.
00:48:56Mateus Cunier, once you get him here, if he's got a runner, he'll find it.
00:49:01In the first half, he didn't have one.
00:49:02Second half, Zerksy makes a fantastic running behind.
00:49:05Perfect weight on the pass from Cunier.
00:49:07And then Jesko will be disappointed he should do better.
00:49:09Same again, Cunier drops down to him.
00:49:12He's got two to combine with.
00:49:13Two attackers who he can play with would probably like more, but at least he's got two.
00:49:17They combine again.
00:49:19Zerksy and Zerksy are able to take the defenders away.
00:49:21Gets Mateus Cunier half a yard, and then that one-liver right foot nearly clinches the whole three points for
00:49:27Manchester United.
00:49:27But another big, big performance for him.
00:49:29And here you can see, like, they're not blessed with goals.
00:49:33You know, Mateus Cunier four, Casemiro four, and then there's not a lot else in that group.
00:49:38And I understand they're missing players, but this is Manchester United.
00:49:41It's the biggest or one of the biggest clubs in the country.
00:49:44And you would expect their starting XI and bench to provide a lot more goal threat than it does at
00:49:48the moment.
00:49:49So heavily reliant on Mateus.
00:49:50And it says a lot about Leeds and their run in December in particular.
00:49:53So the reaction of a lot of the players and the manager there, that, you know, yes, they're happy with
00:49:57the point.
00:49:58But they've had such a good run since that defeat at the end of November to City.
00:50:01They haven't lost a game in Manchester City.
00:50:03Yeah, the flag.
00:50:03He was under pressure, Daniel Farke, as well, wasn't he?
00:50:05And they trusted him.
00:50:06They stuck behind him.
00:50:07Seven unbeaten.
00:50:08Eight points clear of the drop zone.
00:50:09He's doing a great job.
00:50:10Well, OK, we've got plenty more sport coming up for you on the BBC.
00:50:14There's another round of Premier League fixtures in midweek, which means another match of the day.
00:50:18I'll be back on Wednesday evening at 10.40.
00:50:21There's live third round FA Cup football next Saturday.
00:50:24Non-league Macclesfield FC face holders Crystal Palace on BBC One at midday.
00:50:29The Masters snooker begins next Sunday on BBC Two.
00:50:32And if you've missed anything over the festive period, match of the day and individual highlights of every Premier League
00:50:38game are available right now on iPlayer.
00:50:41Now, with half this season's games played, Everton and Brentford faced each other, separated in the table by just a
00:50:47single point.
00:50:48Your commentator for this one is Tom Gale.
00:50:51David Moyes feels Europa or Conference League qualification is a realistic aim for Everton.
00:50:56Jack Grealish is now fully recovered from the festive Lergy.
00:51:00Tien O'Barry says watching videos of former top-league striker Romelu Lukaku helped inspire his goal last time out
00:51:06at Forest.
00:51:0827 points is Brentford's second highest telly at this stage of a Premier League season.
00:51:12Quivine Keller has seven seasons at Liverpool, including only one Merseyside derby, a 1-0 victory at Anfield in April
00:51:20of last year.
00:51:21After a dry December, Igor Thiago is looking to end a six-game wait for a goal.
00:51:32O'Brien trying to reverse the ball, can only find Dam's guards.
00:51:38Thiago blocks Jensen's attempted ball and Grealish gets away.
00:51:41Jack Grealish, back to Dwight McNeil, who draws a fine stop from Quivine Callaghan.
00:51:51First big moment for the Irish goalkeeper.
00:51:56First corner of the game to be taken by Dwight McNeil.
00:52:01Tricky one, cleared off the line by Thiago.
00:52:06Well, a nervy few minutes for Keith Andrews' men.
00:52:10And it's Brentford's number nine, back on defensive duties.
00:52:16David Moyes just a few days away from marking 12 months since his return back to the club.
00:52:21Everton 11 points better off at this stage than last season.
00:52:28Tarkovsky, Janel intercepts, cross towards Thiago!
00:52:36A first sniff of a goal for Igor Thiago, and he dispatches it.
00:52:44David Moyes clearly not impressed.
00:52:47Well, that happened ever so quickly for Brentford.
00:52:51Everton are in possession here.
00:52:54Tarkovsky, that pass is red, and Janel, very speedy on the delivery.
00:53:00And Thiago gets in behind Michael Keane.
00:53:03Only Erling Haaland has bagged more goals than the Brazilians so far this season.
00:53:08His 12th of the campaign to make it Everton 0, Brentford 1.
00:53:14Brentford's first effort on goal, bringing about maximum rewards.
00:53:21Jensen, Thiago to make it two!
00:53:25Denied by Jordan Pickford.
00:53:28Excellent movement off the ball from Thiago.
00:53:32Jordan Pickford uses the angle to his advantage.
00:53:38Grealish.
00:53:41Last chance possibly here for Everton to change the scoreline in the first half.
00:53:46Grealish.
00:53:47Still Grealish.
00:53:49On to his left.
00:53:50Ball across, and what a save!
00:53:52Barry denied!
00:53:54And so too Keane.
00:53:59Incredible goalkeeping from Quivine Kelleher.
00:54:02Keeps Brentford in front.
00:54:11Coyote, dams guard.
00:54:13Gets away from Irabunin.
00:54:16Goes low.
00:54:17Actually gave the Everton man another chance at that.
00:54:20But it will be a Brentford corner.
00:54:26Janelt in front of the away support.
00:54:29Decent one, and it's headed home!
00:54:33Captain fantastic Nathan Collins!
00:54:38Well what a start to the second half for Keith Andrews' side.
00:54:44The run's not tracked, and it's a simple header from close range for the Irishman.
00:54:51Everton 0, Brentford 2.
00:54:57Yannelt.
00:55:01Irabunin.
00:55:06Jensen.
00:55:07Through the legs of Keane.
00:55:10Sharder.
00:55:11Sharder.
00:55:12Thiago!
00:55:17Brentford are running riots at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
00:55:25Look at that from Jensen.
00:55:29Thiago takes charge.
00:55:32His second of the afternoon.
00:55:34Who saw this scoreline coming pre-kick-off?
00:55:38Is the suspicion of an offside?
00:55:41VAR are we having a look?
00:55:44Onside.
00:55:46Goal stands.
00:55:47I'm not sure that's necessary from Thiago.
00:55:51He's hugged Beto.
00:55:53Well, after what David Moyes described as Everton's best performance since his return back to the club.
00:56:00Away at Nottingham Forest.
00:56:01They're following it up with a horror show here against Brentford.
00:56:07Garner's ball in.
00:56:08Decent one.
00:56:09Net by Torkoski.
00:56:11And tipped over by Kelleher.
00:56:15Decent stop from underneath this crossbar.
00:56:23Beto challenges.
00:56:26Meijer.
00:56:29Beto slides in.
00:56:30And the decision is Everton thrown.
00:56:40Grealish.
00:56:42Beto glances it on!
00:56:44And Everton have one back!
00:56:48Muted celebrations.
00:56:50A sterny look from David Moyes.
00:56:53Is there life in this game yet for the home side?
00:56:57It's the first time this season that an Everton player has come off the bench and scored.
00:57:05Neat header.
00:57:06Kelleher beaten.
00:57:10I think a few minutes ago, maybe some Everton supporters were questioning whether or not they should see this one
00:57:15out.
00:57:16Well, that goal certainly changed their minds.
00:57:20Dam's guard.
00:57:22Only Lewis Potter to aim for so far.
00:57:25Does find him.
00:57:26Back to Thiago.
00:57:27On a hat-trick!
00:57:27And it deflects.
00:57:29And into the welcome arms of Jordan Pickford.
00:57:34The speed in which Keith Andrews' side transition.
00:57:37And they still managed to get a shot on target.
00:57:44Roll.
00:57:45Goes low again.
00:57:47And here's Thiago.
00:57:50He's in.
00:57:51On a hat-trick.
00:57:53Igor Thiago!
00:57:58Caps a superb away day for Brentford.
00:58:03He secures the match ball.
00:58:05And puts an end to this contest.
00:58:09Everton were taking risks.
00:58:11They were pushing men forwards.
00:58:12And look at just how much time and space Igor Thiago has.
00:58:19He's got the freedom of the Hill-Dickinson Stadium to bear down on Jordan Pickford.
00:58:26Everton one.
00:58:28Brentford four.
00:58:33As you can see, lots of blue empty seats amongst the home supporters.
00:58:39We've seen more than enough.
00:58:44Grealish.
00:58:47Grealish.
00:58:48Barry!
00:58:51Still time for more goals in this match.
00:58:56There hasn't been many positives for Everton here this afternoon.
00:59:00But both of their strikers on the score sheet is one.
00:59:04Everton two.
00:59:05Brentford four.
00:59:10We were excellent.
00:59:12Right from the off, really.
00:59:13Played with a lot of personality, conviction, energy, spirit.
00:59:18All the aspects of the game that I want to see from our team come into a very, very difficult
00:59:22ground.
00:59:23Even though it's a new ground.
00:59:25Difficult club to play against.
00:59:26Manager to play against.
00:59:27Who I have a serious amount of respect for.
00:59:30So we knew we'd have to earn a result today.
00:59:33But I have to say, I thought we were excellent.
00:59:35Disappointment that we didn't play better.
00:59:37But, no, we're just a bit short at the moment in some areas.
00:59:41But in areas we lost the goals today, we weren't short.
00:59:45We've been very strong in those areas.
00:59:46But I thought we were disappointed defensively today.
00:59:49And certainly not as strong as we have been.
00:59:52A word of appreciation for Igor Thiago.
00:59:54I'm sure you go against him a lot in training.
00:59:56So you'll know about his attributes.
00:59:58And a short spell without scoring, but back amongst the goals.
01:00:01He's just a handful.
01:00:02He has a bit of everything.
01:00:03You know, he runs in behind.
01:00:04He works hard.
01:00:05He holds the ball up.
01:00:05And he can finish a ball.
01:00:07He has everything to be the top striker.
01:00:08And if he keeps going like this, there's no reason he can't be.
01:00:10He's played really well recently and not scored.
01:00:13So I always felt the goals would come again.
01:00:15It was unrealistic to think he was just going to continue banging in goals left, right and centre.
01:00:19Week in, week out, like he had been.
01:00:21So his performance again today was sensational.
01:00:25And he truly deserves the accolades that he'll get off the back of it.
01:00:28Certainly not a typical Brentford performance on the road this season.
01:00:32They've lost seven of nine.
01:00:33But they were running rampant at the Hill Dickinson today.
01:00:35And Thiago in particular off the back of six games without scoring.
01:00:38Yeah, he was excellent, Gabby.
01:00:40There was no sign of a lack of confidence after not scoring for six games.
01:00:44Obviously, he's been in the goals over the course of the season.
01:00:47Everton were poor.
01:00:47You know, this is not their finest day.
01:00:49Mistakes, as you'll see in the build-up to a lot of these chances.
01:00:52But proper number nine.
01:00:53Great movement off the back of the centre-half.
01:00:55And a fantastic finish.
01:00:56And you can see him here.
01:00:58His teammates spoke about it there.
01:00:59Nathan Collins always wanting to threaten in behind.
01:01:01These runs in behind so hard to deal with.
01:01:04Pickford manages to save this one.
01:01:06But then maybe he learns from that chance where he's smashed it and Pickford's got a hand to it.
01:01:10He competes at the top of the pitch.
01:01:12And he's a target man for them.
01:01:13But now you see him again just threatening in behind that Everton back line.
01:01:16And he caused them real, real problems today.
01:01:18He doesn't get the first one.
01:01:20Gets this one.
01:01:20And that's a great finish.
01:01:21To just lift it over Pickford would have been easy to smash it against him.
01:01:25Another poor ball from Everton.
01:01:27And then not well organised behind the ball, Everton, on that clip.
01:01:30And you leave Thiago in this sort of space in the form that he's in.
01:01:32And all of us were pretty sure that this was going to end one way in a goal.
01:01:36Another little dink finish and a Premier League hat-trick for him.
01:01:39And well-deserved.
01:01:40A fantastic performance.
01:01:42And look at that.
01:01:43He's in very good company.
01:01:45He is.
01:01:46And I think there's a big tournament coming up in the summer, isn't there?
01:01:48The World Cup that I'm sure he's got his eyes on.
01:01:51Because Brazil haven't really had a set number nine for a while.
01:01:54And I know he hasn't been called up yet.
01:01:56But if he stays on that list and he keeps the company that he's keeping at the moment,
01:01:59then it would be very, very hard not to take him.
01:02:01I mentioned Brentford's away form because actually their league position is very good.
01:02:05And it's been built on their home form.
01:02:07Hill Dickinson for Everton at the moment, their form there isn't very good, is it?
01:02:13And having had a good start to their new home, things are looking a bit wobbly.
01:02:16Yeah, Moyes said they're short in a few areas.
01:02:18And again, he'll be looking maybe at the window to try and strengthen.
01:02:21But yeah, the graph speaks for itself, doesn't it?
01:02:22I mean, they're very...
01:02:23Hill Dickinson is a brand new stadium.
01:02:25And sometimes the opposition look like they like playing there more so in the home team.
01:02:28And sometimes that happens, Gabby.
01:02:29But David Moyes will want to put that right.
01:02:31We know he's a top manager and I'm sure he'll get it right.
01:02:33OK, Eddie Howe has said that January will be a season-defining month for his Newcastle side.
01:02:39They begin 2026 against another side struggling for form in Crystal Palace.
01:02:43Commentary comes from Martin Fisher.
01:02:47January will be defining.
01:02:49It will certainly be tiring.
01:02:51Nine games over the next 28 days for Newcastle in four different competitions.
01:02:56Palace know all about hectic schedules.
01:02:59This is their 32nd match of the campaign.
01:03:02No Premier League side has played more.
01:03:05One change for Newcastle.
01:03:06Harvey Barnes replaced by Jacob Murphy, who scored in their last two wins here over Palace.
01:03:12The Eagles give a debut to Brennan Johnson, who only joined them from Spurs on Friday
01:03:17for a club record fee of £35 million.
01:03:25Neither side in good form at the moment.
01:03:28First win in four for Newcastle on Tuesday.
01:03:32The first point in four for Palace on Thursday.
01:03:38Tonali, Gordon, two to his right.
01:03:43Gets it back from Gimmarais.
01:03:45On now for Murphy.
01:03:46Whistle waits in the middle.
01:03:48Mitchell with the block.
01:03:49Newcastle score.
01:03:55Some pieces again, something that they have struggled with of late.
01:03:59Lewis Hall to swing this in for Newcastle.
01:04:01It's deep.
01:04:02Henderson helps it on its way.
01:04:06Whistle.
01:04:08In by Tonali.
01:04:11Punched away by Henderson.
01:04:12Back in by Hall.
01:04:13Scher.
01:04:14Great save, Henderson.
01:04:19Well, it wasn't the greatest of punches away by the Palace goalkeeper at the start of all that.
01:04:25But he was in the right position to deal with it when it came back his way from Fabian Scher.
01:04:34Give him a rush.
01:04:36Lovely ball.
01:04:37Whistle.
01:04:38In on goal.
01:04:39Squares for Gordon.
01:04:411-0 Newcastle.
01:04:45Eighth goal of the season for Anthony Gordon.
01:04:49His first in the Premier League that hasn't come from the penalty spot this season.
01:04:56I wonder there if Whistle is actually just ahead of Lerma.
01:05:01So tight, isn't it?
01:05:06Cut of the grass, it looks ever so tight.
01:05:08But it's the shoulder of Whistle that is just ahead of the Palace man.
01:05:14It won't count.
01:05:16Newcastle celebrations cut short.
01:05:19Matthew Donahoe, today's VAR, with a decision.
01:05:27Inside for Gimaraish, looking for Whistle.
01:05:32And the block was by Canber.
01:05:36Whistle looking sharp.
01:05:38Timed his run better there than he did earlier.
01:05:4220-25 brought welcome glory for both of these clubs.
01:05:46A first domestic trophy in 70 years for Newcastle.
01:05:49First ever piece of silverware in Crystal Palace's history.
01:05:53One of the future holds for them in 2026.
01:05:57Now Hughes.
01:05:59Mitchell and Pino to his left.
01:06:02It's Pino through for Hughes, who's in!
01:06:04Oh, he should have buried it!
01:06:05What a chance for Will Hughes!
01:06:08Well, he doesn't score many.
01:06:10But he really should have buried that opportunity.
01:06:14Lovely way to pass by Pino.
01:06:16And from there, Hughes somehow puts it wide of the target.
01:06:21And look at the reaction of Oliver Glasner.
01:06:27Now Gordon.
01:06:30Four around the corner.
01:06:32Newcastle with four in the box.
01:06:33Here's Joe Linton.
01:06:34Now Whistle.
01:06:34And Palace scrambling away.
01:06:41Desperate defending, but affected defending by Crystal Palace,
01:06:44particularly by Tyreek Mitchell.
01:06:47Joe Linton.
01:06:51Barnes with his first involvement.
01:06:55Stopped by Canber.
01:07:02Sixth corner that Newcastle have had today.
01:07:04None of them have really caused Palace that much difficulty.
01:07:08Came off the bar, that one.
01:07:13And by Lorcan, he's face.
01:07:14He intended it.
01:07:16Look at the swing on that.
01:07:18Henderson will argue that he had it covered.
01:07:22Now a chance for Miley to cross.
01:07:25Gay nods away.
01:07:29Good night's trip by Wharton.
01:07:33Newcastle getting the free kick.
01:07:35This is where Oliver Glasner will be getting a little concern that Palace are beginning to tire again.
01:07:45First phase dealt with.
01:07:47Here's the second from Barnes.
01:07:49Arriving back post is Miley!
01:07:51And it's not at home!
01:07:54Bruno Gimaraes again!
01:07:57Gimaraes again!
01:07:58Comes up trumps for Newcastle.
01:08:03Palace's resistance.
01:08:06Finally broken.
01:08:07And Gimaraes nods home from inside the six-yard box.
01:08:13His seventh Premier League goal of the season.
01:08:15And that matches his best ever tally in the Premier League of two seasons ago.
01:08:22It's another goal that Palace have conceded from a set piece.
01:08:25It has been there undoing all too often in recent weeks.
01:08:32Driven in by Murphy.
01:08:33Miley.
01:08:34For Cher.
01:08:36And the header from Barnes.
01:08:37Completely saved by Henderson.
01:08:39It almost bounced to Wissett.
01:08:42But Cambo was there for Palace to shove it behind.
01:08:47Newcastle pressing hard now for a second goal.
01:08:52Another dangerous corner.
01:08:53Joel Linton got a touch and it's in!
01:08:56Malik Chao makes it two to Newcastle.
01:08:59And that is that, I'm sure, from St James's Park.
01:09:03Another set piece brings another goal against Crystal Palace.
01:09:08And once again, they have tired significantly the longer the game has worn on.
01:09:15Real pinball in there for a second or two.
01:09:18And it's Chao who gets the vital final touch.
01:09:25Forward by Gimaraes.
01:09:26Barnes looked like he timed his run brilliantly.
01:09:29Barnes is in here for Newcastle for number three.
01:09:32Oh!
01:09:34How was that put wide by Joe Willock?
01:09:39Henderson did really well to block the effort from Barnes.
01:09:43But it looked like it was just a temporary reprieve.
01:09:46As Joe Willock came bursting in from the far side.
01:09:50From there, Joe Willock has found a way of missing the target.
01:09:55But it won't matter.
01:09:56Newcastle have come through this one.
01:09:58In the end, rather comfortably.
01:10:00Newcastle 2, Palace 0.
01:10:03Two goals happened from two set plays.
01:10:05And that's what we have to solve.
01:10:08The problem conceding goals from set plays.
01:10:10I think from our last six defeats in five games,
01:10:13we just conceded goals from set plays.
01:10:15And not one, just every single one.
01:10:16Today, two, four at Leeds.
01:10:18Two against Man United.
01:10:19One against Tottenham.
01:10:20Two at Strasbourg.
01:10:21So, and then it's, it's, it's, you can't win games.
01:10:24Yeah, this is what, this is our responsibility.
01:10:27Responsibility is my responsibility to give the players better solutions
01:10:30that they can defend it in a better way.
01:10:32I think we work really hard at our set pieces
01:10:35and pleased to see them come off and they can win and lose your game.
01:10:37So, it was a defining factor today.
01:10:39When we come in at 0-0, we know we could play better.
01:10:42I thought we did play better,
01:10:42especially with the introduction of the substitutes.
01:10:45I thought they all made a difference.
01:10:47And finally, we had some sort of strength back in the squad today.
01:10:49You could see our bench was, you know, much stronger.
01:10:53And I think that made the difference.
01:10:55So, back-to-back wins for Newcastle United,
01:10:58and that coincides with two Premier League starts for Johan Wisser.
01:11:02He offers something of an Isak-esque quality to Newcastle.
01:11:06You see the difference.
01:11:06That's yourself for the Newcastle fans.
01:11:07Isak-like comparison.
01:11:09But, yeah, I agree totally, Gabby.
01:11:11And it was a good link-up play with him and Guimarães today.
01:11:13You see him in the picture.
01:11:13He drops deep.
01:11:14And Valtomar is good at this as well, dropping deep.
01:11:16But I'd like to keep an eye on Vissa's movement after.
01:11:19He drags the centre-half out of position.
01:11:21But he's not happy we can get involved in link-up play.
01:11:23Watch where he ends up here.
01:11:24Now, he probably should score here, Johan, at the age of the box.
01:11:26You know, it's a timid sort of shot at the end of that.
01:11:28But, again, he's got one thought in his mind, is to get in the box.
01:11:31And, again, Bruno receives the ball here.
01:11:32Look at Vissa.
01:11:33His first thought is, can he stretch the opposition?
01:11:35Can he play down the sides?
01:11:37And, again, a split like Isak last season.
01:11:39He'd done that a lot.
01:11:39It's very difficult for defenders to defend against pace and power.
01:11:42He was marginally offside in this occasion.
01:11:44Obviously, Gordon with the follow-up, but the goal was rightly disallowed.
01:11:47Again, can Bruno play that ball?
01:11:48You see Vissa peeling on the back of the centre-half.
01:11:51That's what he's good at, you know, occupying the centre-halves.
01:11:53And, again, he doesn't come out to try and link up on the age of the box
01:11:56that maybe have ultimated.
01:11:57He's getting in the middle of the goal.
01:11:58He has the best opportunity to score goals.
01:12:00You know, Palace just do enough to defend us.
01:12:02But, again, him and Bruno are in the box here trying to score.
01:12:05And, already mentioned set plays.
01:12:06It's a huge part of the game.
01:12:07We highlight Bruno in the middle of the box.
01:12:09And we should mention Lewis Mealy, the back,
01:12:11who was absolutely brilliant today, by the way.
01:12:12Keeps it alive.
01:12:13And you want your captain to step up at a key moment.
01:12:16The first goal in any game is so important.
01:12:18And, again, captain fantastic.
01:12:20Steps up to the plate.
01:12:20Gets the all-important goal.
01:12:22And you look at his stats as well.
01:12:23He's matched his best goal-scoring record already.
01:12:26And we're only in January.
01:12:27So, again, such huge, important goals.
01:12:29And you mentioned, Eddie mentioned momentum for this team now.
01:12:32Back-to-back wins.
01:12:32Can they push on?
01:12:33They've got some big games coming up.
01:12:34Oliver Glasner bemoaning the fact that Crystal Palace can't defend set pieces.
01:12:39And they do have a terrible record this season.
01:12:41They do.
01:12:42I'm sure this is driving him mad.
01:12:44Because they're always in games.
01:12:46You know, they're defensively sound.
01:12:47They're well-organised.
01:12:48Well-coached.
01:12:49But, like you said there, if you're going to ship this many goals from set pieces,
01:12:53over 50% of the goals they've conceded have been from set plays.
01:12:56And it's been a real struggle for him.
01:12:58And the more it happens, the more it becomes a thing.
01:13:00Because I'm sure he'll do a meeting on it tomorrow or the next day around.
01:13:04We need to be better at it.
01:13:05And then the lads go out onto the pitch.
01:13:07They give a corner away.
01:13:09And instantly everyone's thinking, oh, no, another corner.
01:13:12You know, we've struggled off these this season.
01:13:14So, the quicker they fix it, the better.
01:13:16Easier said than done.
01:13:17But I'm sure Glasner will be working hard at it.
01:13:19OK.
01:13:20Tottenham staggered into 2026 with a goalless draw at Brentford on New Year's Day,
01:13:25their first in 137 Premier League games.
01:13:27They were hoping for better at home to upwardly mobile Sunderland.
01:13:31Your commentator, Robin Cowan.
01:13:34Goalless draws for both Spurs and Sunderland to begin the new year.
01:13:38But the mood from the respective fan bases couldn't be more different.
01:13:41Tottenham's travelling fans were vociferous in their dissatisfaction at another toothless display.
01:13:46In response, Thomas Frank has replaced a holding midfielder in João Polinha
01:13:50for the more attack-minded Matthias Tell.
01:13:52The other change sees Ben Davies make just his second Premier League appearance of the season
01:13:56and first from the start.
01:13:58Sunderland have taken points of all of the current top four in the Premier League.
01:14:02Manchester City the latest side to leave the stadium of light frustrated.
01:14:06Regis Libris names the same 11 with this.
01:14:08A fixture former Arsenal man Granit Xhaka will have been especially looking forward to.
01:14:17Archie Gray, given away, but Granit Xhaka can't keep hold of it.
01:14:25Gray, allowed to advance.
01:14:27Options right and left.
01:14:30Serkin got a little touch on it.
01:14:33Porro's delivery!
01:14:36Mukiele, the faintest of glances ahead of Rashadesson.
01:14:41And if not got that touch, that would have been 1-0.
01:14:48Thomas Frank has admitted that the first half of the season, as Tottenham head coach, has been difficult to enjoy.
01:15:02Not a bad effort from Tell.
01:15:07The groups are pretty sure that that was heading wide.
01:15:13Good spell of sustained pressure, this from Tottenham, but is there something at the end of it?
01:15:19Romero.
01:15:25Odebert.
01:15:32Crosses, turned behind by Herr Schrauder.
01:15:42Tell.
01:15:45Romero takes it down.
01:15:46Van de Ven!
01:15:47And touched in by Ben Davis!
01:15:53Well, Tottenham looking for more potency up front.
01:15:58And it's the defenders who combine to get their first goal.
01:16:02You've got to say, this was slapdash from Sunderland.
01:16:07Christian Romero had time to take it down.
01:16:09Slip!
01:16:11And Mickey Van de Ven!
01:16:12Shot is turned in by Ben Davis.
01:16:17His first Spurs goal in over two years.
01:16:23Some hope for Reggie Slabrese.
01:16:25Only Aston Villa have won more points from losing positions this season than Sunderland.
01:16:31Mukiele.
01:16:33Charleston wins it.
01:16:35Hume has a go!
01:16:39Opened up nicely for him.
01:16:42No one really closing him down.
01:16:45They've really failed to lay a glove on Tottenham so far in this first half.
01:16:53Ben Tankour tried to flick that forward.
01:16:56Here's Trey Hume on to Mayenda.
01:17:02Find Xhaka and a bit of space here.
01:17:06Edingra.
01:17:10Oh, gets the cross in.
01:17:13Vicario came and Ben Davis was there.
01:17:18Unconvincing.
01:17:19From the Tottenham goalkeeper.
01:17:22This was a chance.
01:17:24And Vicario got nothing on that at all.
01:17:28Good positioning from Ben Davis.
01:17:34Can Sunderland prey on the creeping nerves of those inside the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?
01:17:43On edge at the moment.
01:17:46Mukiele.
01:17:47Well, that's the best Sunderland have offered all day.
01:17:52Enzo Le Fay just hits the base of the post.
01:17:57No intervention from Vicario.
01:18:00So close.
01:18:01And that will do nothing for the nerves inside here.
01:18:05Sunderland to have so much confidence, positivity, starting.
01:18:15To show what they're all about.
01:18:18Brobby receives the ball back.
01:18:20It's Brobby!
01:18:23It is brilliant!
01:18:26The pressure was building.
01:18:30Sunderland strike with 10 minutes to go.
01:18:34Lovely give and go between Brian Brobby and Enzo Le Fay.
01:18:40He has leathered that in.
01:18:42Good times.
01:18:44Keep coming for the Black Cats.
01:18:47And they are level.
01:18:52Mukiele.
01:18:54Since moving to right back.
01:18:59It's made Sunderland look.
01:19:03Much more of a threat in attack.
01:19:07Might fall nicely here.
01:19:09Brobby.
01:19:11Hume.
01:19:13One-way traffic now.
01:19:17Slightly fortunate bouts here.
01:19:19Brobby showing good strength to hold that up.
01:19:22And Hume finding space for the shot.
01:19:26Thomas Frank has...
01:19:28This section of the season.
01:19:30As a marathon.
01:19:31And I think they've hit the wall.
01:19:35Two minutes.
01:19:36Stoppage time remaining.
01:19:39Pedro Porro.
01:19:41Cross-wide.
01:19:43Polinia.
01:19:44Or Rosewell.
01:19:46But couldn't hit the target.
01:19:48And is that Tottenham's final chance?
01:19:53More frustration for the Spurs fans.
01:19:55And a familiar sound for Thomas Frank.
01:20:00What's your kind of message in it?
01:20:01Is there an understanding about the frustration from the fans?
01:20:04No, but I think the first and foremost throughout the game.
01:20:07I think the fans were very good in backing us.
01:20:10And we're behind the team.
01:20:11That's all we're asking for.
01:20:12After, I always said that's different.
01:20:14So, and I'm also pretty sure that the fans, they will acknowledge, especially first half.
01:20:19Acknowledge the hard work throughout the game from the players.
01:20:21Acknowledge that they tried so hard throughout the game.
01:20:23Sometimes, just don't go your way.
01:20:26We reached 30 points this afternoon, which is really positive for us.
01:20:31And it gives us confidence.
01:20:33Because even if you go through a difficult period, I think it was the case this afternoon,
01:20:38you are always on the edge.
01:20:41You don't give up.
01:20:43And the opponent, I think, can feel your quality.
01:20:46So, I think it's really positive for the future.
01:20:48But we'll have another challenge in three days.
01:20:51And go again.
01:20:51We're playing with three front players that hasn't got that many Premier League goals in
01:20:56Wilson, Mati and also Kolo.
01:20:58A very good player, but probably lack the final two, three good actions and goal and assist.
01:21:05Sometimes, you're on a spell where you need to work very, very hard to get the margins on your side.
01:21:11Frustration for Spurs.
01:21:12Because in that first half, they looked far the better team.
01:21:15Had so many chances to put the game away.
01:21:17Yeah, the game was there for them.
01:21:18I preferred their approach.
01:21:20I thought they were slightly more aggressive.
01:21:22You can see here, this is right from the start.
01:21:24After Sunderland.
01:21:25Not going to give Sunderland an easy afternoon.
01:21:27Which sometimes it feels like they can at this stadium.
01:21:29They got after them, but then poor decision from Richarlison.
01:21:32And the story of it was, they just really lack quality.
01:21:35You know, here it's not a difficult ball here from Benton Kerr.
01:21:38Big space to leave that in for Richarlison.
01:21:40He misses it.
01:21:42Lose the chance.
01:21:42They get it back again.
01:21:43Colin Mwani.
01:21:45Again, easy pass.
01:21:47Big, big space to get that in with Premier League quality.
01:21:50Doesn't manage to find it.
01:21:52Sunderland off the hook again.
01:21:53And when Spurs were on top and Thomas Frank talked about missing some opportunities.
01:21:58Here, Pedro Porro, when he breaks, he finally shows a moment of quality.
01:22:02And you think, this is it.
01:22:03What a ball.
01:22:04And then they lack quality on the end of it with a really poor first touch.
01:22:07And the chance fizzles out.
01:22:08And then, when you need a moment of quality, this Sunderland side never know when they're beat.
01:22:12And this is real top, top draw.
01:22:14The moment of quality didn't come from Spurs.
01:22:16It comes from Sunderland.
01:22:17Fantastic link up from Brobby.
01:22:19And that pass from Le Fay on the volley to get the weight of it and the direction of it
01:22:23right.
01:22:23And then an emphatic finish from Brobby.
01:22:26Smashes right through the ball.
01:22:28Absolutely no chance for the goalkeeper.
01:22:30And this Sunderland train keeps on rolling.
01:22:32And they're very, very difficult to stop at the moment.
01:22:35And there's pressure on Thomas Frank.
01:22:36You could hear the boos, couldn't you, at the end of the game.
01:22:39What do you feel the mood music is like around Spurs?
01:22:43I kind of look at the table.
01:22:44They're 13th.
01:22:44A couple of wins are in the Champions League position.
01:22:46It's very tight in the middle of the league.
01:22:48I know that's not what Thomas Frank wants.
01:22:50He wants results and the fans want results.
01:22:52But I think Stake Wolfen maybe.
01:22:53I know Johnson's left this week.
01:22:54Maybe he'll get money in the January window to strengthen his squad and push them up the league.
01:22:59OK.
01:22:59Shall we take a look at all the goals from yesterday then?
01:23:08Oh, dearie me.
01:23:09Give it straight to Emma Nielsen.
01:23:15And away from Semenyo and still going.
01:23:19And across.
01:23:20And blocked.
01:23:21But in.
01:23:22Arsenal level.
01:23:23And it is Gabriel.
01:23:26Jokoret has got the wrong side of his man.
01:23:28Sinesi struggling to recover.
01:23:30Odegaard now.
01:23:31Rice.
01:23:32Brilliant.
01:23:34Absolutely clinical from Declan Rice.
01:23:38Here's Bukayo Saka.
01:23:41Rice.
01:23:42Declan Rice at the double for Arsenal.
01:23:46Cook.
01:23:47Opens up for the hit here.
01:23:49Oh, what a hit too from Kruppi.
01:23:53Rodgers.
01:23:56Watkins.
01:24:00Cash is in space.
01:24:02Kamara has found him.
01:24:04McGinn coming in.
01:24:072-0 Aston Villa.
01:24:10Gibbs-White bursting forward and he's onside.
01:24:12It's Morgan Gibbs-White for Forrest.
01:24:16Hope is restored.
01:24:19Thielemans.
01:24:20Into McGinn.
01:24:22Oh, the goalkeeper's in no man's land here.
01:24:25And Sion McGinn.
01:24:27Makes him play.
01:24:33Ayari.
01:24:34Kostoulis is in there.
01:24:35Blasted home by Rutter.
01:24:39Lugachukwu tries to send it away.
01:24:41Sliding in.
01:24:42But Yasin Ayari collects it here.
01:24:44Oh, it's the perfect start to the second half.
01:24:47For Brandon Hobalbion.
01:24:51And it goes to Hoang.
01:24:53Hoang's ball across.
01:24:55And Wolves in front.
01:25:00And it's as far as Mane.
01:25:02He goes down and wins the penalty.
01:25:06So Hoang with an opportunity to give Wolves a 2-0 lead.
01:25:12An opportunity he takes.
01:25:17Mane's onside.
01:25:18No question of that.
01:25:19And he has a goal.
01:25:20And it's three.
01:25:26A big moment.
01:25:27A big day for Wolves.
01:25:29I know, you know, you're pleased for your old team there.
01:25:32One of your other old teams as a player, West Ham, in big trouble.
01:25:36Yeah, it seems that way, doesn't it?
01:25:37I thought that when they appointed Nuno, that they would start to move themselves away and we'd see an upturn.
01:25:42It hasn't quite gone that way yet.
01:25:44I'm sure they'll be doing their best in January to give him some support and try and give themselves an
01:25:49opportunity.
01:25:50Because that gap just seems to be widening.
01:25:52You know, Nottingham Forest haven't quite capitalised, but Leeds have moved themselves away from it.
01:25:56So, fantastic win for Wolves.
01:25:57Absolutely delighted for Rob as well.
01:25:59Because I know he's working his socks off there and he's got their first victory, which will feel like a
01:26:03big one.
01:26:03But West Ham with an awful lot of work to do to move away from that bottom three.
01:26:07Big game against Forest on Tuesday, of course.
01:26:08Now, we've loved having you here, haven't we?
01:26:10We've had a great day today.
01:26:11We've all been in since 12 o'clock watching all the matches.
01:26:13I'm sure you've had a lovely time as well.
01:26:15Yeah, it's been fantastic.
01:26:16I'd much rather be managing.
01:26:17Of course.
01:26:18Would you?
01:26:19Well, yeah, this has been great.
01:26:22It's not quite as stressful as managing, but I do miss being on the touchline.
01:26:25It's a fantastic feeling.
01:26:27So, hopefully back soon.
01:26:28Hopefully something comes up that you feel you want to do more than spend time with Shea and I.
01:26:32Yeah, yeah.
01:26:33Good choice, really.
01:26:35OK, here's how the Premier League table looks after 20 games played.
01:26:39Back-to-back draws for Manchester City means Arsenal have a six-point lead at the top.
01:26:43Brentford have made their joint best start to a Premier League season.
01:26:46And are only four points off Liverpool in fourth.
01:26:48In fact, a mere four points separates fifth all the way down to 14th.
01:26:51Leeds extend their gap above the bottom three to a healthy eight points after a seventh match without defeat.
01:26:56But Crystal Palace's run of poor form continues with a fourth league loss in five.
01:27:00Now, it's time for the results of Goal of the Month.
01:27:17And in third place is Fulham's Harry Wilson on 23.92% of the vote.
01:27:25This is relevant because Morgan Rodgers got 23.96% of the vote.
01:27:31Talk about tight margins for his goal against Manchester United.
01:27:34So, the winner with 26.46%.
01:27:38Well, it was a team goal, really, wasn't it?
01:27:40But it was finished by Dominic Calvert-Lewin for Leeds United.
01:27:48Leeds did that well, though.
01:27:51Stack.
01:27:52Super ball from him and to Aronson.
01:27:57Numbers forward here, Leeds.
01:27:58Aronson.
01:27:59And Calvert-Lewin!
01:28:06It's a fabulous team goal.
01:28:09And Calvert-Lewin's incredible streak in front of Goal continues.
01:28:18Scored on the 28th of December against Sunderland.
01:28:20A lovely team goal.
01:28:21Happy with that one?
01:28:22Yeah.
01:28:23Yeah, I thought they were all good goals, but nice to see a team goal win.
01:28:25Thanks for coming.
01:28:26Thanks for coming, Shea, as well.
01:28:27We'll see you again, definitely.
01:28:28And that's it from all of us.
01:28:30So, the festive period ends with Arsenal six points clear at the top of the table
01:28:33as Manchester City are left frustrated by the Enzo late show.
01:28:36Good night.
01:28:58Good night.
01:28:58Good night.
