00:00:00Pete, we are so fortunate to live in this glorious country of ours.
00:00:03It's surrounded by so much beautiful water and waterways.
00:00:07Yeah.
00:00:07Such a massive percentage of Australians live on the coast.
00:00:10It calms, inspires and energises us, doesn't it?
00:00:12Which is why we are so excited to show you through tonight's amazing home
00:00:16because literally all those ideas, it's part of this home's DNA.
00:00:20It has a roofline inspired by a wave which floats above the living areas.
00:00:25Honestly, it's one of many things that will whet your appetite
00:00:27on tonight's Better Homes and Gardens.
00:00:31Tonight, even our tiniest turtles need rescuing from time to time.
00:00:36I think the little creatures are so important.
00:00:38We always talk about the big ones.
00:00:40Find out what all the fuzz is about.
00:00:43Try our peachy dessert.
00:00:44I'm about to make this day a whole lot better
00:00:47by making the best peach tart you're going to see.
00:00:51Have you noticed how our streets are cluttered with parked cars?
00:00:55It's because our garages are full too.
00:00:58I can already see one big problem.
00:00:59Yeah, well, the car doesn't fit, mate.
00:01:03Plus, got a tree that's totally rooted?
00:01:06Charlie's on the case.
00:01:07This is a family show.
00:01:09I'm using a technical term, of course.
00:01:11And Valentine's Day might be long gone,
00:01:14but roses can live on.
00:01:16Today, it's a rose lover's paradise.
00:01:33Well, I'm standing on the bank of a farm dam,
00:01:35and there's a couple of blokes in front of me
00:01:37waiting around in the water,
00:01:38using their hands to look for something.
00:01:41What is it they're looking for?
00:01:45There we go.
00:01:46Got one.
00:01:47Oh, how's that for timing?
00:01:49Beautiful.
00:01:50Looking good.
00:01:52Aha!
00:01:54Well, Shane and Cain,
00:01:56what sort of turtles have we got, boys?
00:01:57This is the eastern long-necked turtle.
00:01:59And are they fully grown at that stage?
00:02:01Yeah, pretty well.
00:02:02Yeah, they can get a little bit bigger than this,
00:02:04but basically these are adult females.
00:02:06So, obviously, you rescue turtles.
00:02:08Do you rescue anything else as well?
00:02:10Oh, look, we don't discriminate.
00:02:11We work with a whole range of wildlife.
00:02:14Come on, such as?
00:02:15Well, including fish and frogs and lizards and snakes
00:02:20and all things that live around wetlands.
00:02:22We started it about a decade ago.
00:02:25Shane and I and our good turtle mate,
00:02:27we all got together,
00:02:29and basically we saw a requirement
00:02:31and a necessity for these animals to be saved,
00:02:33especially in Sydney growth areas
00:02:35where they're doing a lot of new infrastructure,
00:02:37road upgrades, housing estates.
00:02:39It's a wonderful thing to be able to do what you love
00:02:42and get paid for it.
00:02:43So where do you go to release the turtles?
00:02:47Well, we try to find a body of water
00:02:48if it's not going to be impacted in the future,
00:02:50if it's not too far away from where we rescued them from.
00:02:53We've got ourselves a couple of turtles.
00:02:55What happens now?
00:02:56If these guys were injured or unhealthy in any way,
00:02:58we would take them to the vet,
00:02:59and then they'd usually go back to Shane's
00:03:01or a carer's for rehabilitation.
00:03:03Don't tell me you... I'm interrupting you.
00:03:05Don't tell me you've got a turtle hospital at your joint.
00:03:08Yes, I have.
00:03:09He's got a turtle hospital at his joint.
00:03:11That's something I've got to say.
00:03:36I open my mouth and it's all in my throat.
00:03:43It must take a lot of time, mate, looking after all of this.
00:03:46It's a full-time job.
00:03:47You were, what, a fitter and turner, weren't you, wasn't you?
00:03:49Yeah, by trade.
00:03:50OK.
00:03:50Yep.
00:03:51So this is totally different to fitting and turning.
00:03:53It's a completely different thing altogether.
00:03:55Can you give me a random figure
00:03:56as to how many do you estimate are in this backyard?
00:03:58There's 200 to 300 in this backyard.
00:04:02We mainly breed the eastern long-necked turtles
00:04:05and I also breed the Murray short-necked necks.
00:04:07Yeah.
00:04:07What happens to them all?
00:04:09Where are they going to go?
00:04:10Well, I do rehome turtles.
00:04:13Yeah.
00:04:13The baby ones, I'm really fussy where they go to.
00:04:17Yeah.
00:04:17People got to have the correct tank set-ups.
00:04:20Yeah, that's important.
00:04:20And licences and everything else like that.
00:04:23OK, important point.
00:04:24Let's talk about licences.
00:04:25So you've got a licence to cover you
00:04:27from doing all this sort of stuff,
00:04:29you know, along with cone, right?
00:04:31You also would have to have a licence
00:04:32to be selling what are Australian native fauna,
00:04:34am I right?
00:04:35Yes.
00:04:35OK, so you have that too?
00:04:37That's a separate thing, yep.
00:04:38Yeah, agreed.
00:04:39That's a totally different thing.
00:04:40Yep.
00:04:40But you have to have that as well.
00:04:41Do those people who take one on board
00:04:43have to have a licence themselves
00:04:45or a permit to keep that animal?
00:04:47Yes.
00:04:48OK.
00:04:48So it's all well-controlled.
00:04:50Both of you, you know,
00:04:52I think what you're doing in the world today
00:04:55is saving the little creatures
00:04:56and I think the little creatures are so important.
00:04:57We always talk about the big ones.
00:04:59I would like to have a look at some rehabilitation.
00:05:02Of course, yeah.
00:05:03Can we have a squiz?
00:05:04Sure, Ken.
00:05:05Lead the way, Macduff.
00:05:14So this obviously had an injury to the shell just here, mate.
00:05:18Where did this turtle come from?
00:05:19This turtle was crossing a road and was hit by a vehicle.
00:05:23Somebody pulled over and collected the turtle.
00:05:25Yeah.
00:05:25And they took it to a vet and the vet has repaired its shell.
00:05:31Yeah.
00:05:31And they've brought it here just for rehab for a period of time.
00:05:35What's your general advice to people who see an injured turtle on the side of the road?
00:05:40We encourage people to just stop the car if it's safe to do so.
00:05:43Get that turtle into a box, some sort of containment,
00:05:46and just get it to the nearest vet.
00:05:47That's the best thing to do because the vet will know exactly who to refer it to
00:05:51or be able to care for that turtle themselves.
00:05:54This one in there looks like it's been on steroids.
00:05:56It's enormous.
00:05:57What's that one?
00:05:58That is a northern long neck.
00:06:00I guess for the people at home, they don't bite, do they?
00:06:02You take it?
00:06:03No, they don't.
00:06:04They might mistake your finger as food.
00:06:06Yeah.
00:06:07That's probably the only thing, but they're not aggressive or anything.
00:06:10This is a beautiful animal, isn't it?
00:06:12Look at the webbing on the feet.
00:06:13Look at that.
00:06:13They're so well-equipped to be able to swim.
00:06:17Little tiny nostrils right up here on the very top of the nose.
00:06:19They come right to the surface of the water, breathe so easily.
00:06:23Tiny little eyes.
00:06:26They're such amazing animals.
00:06:28But what happens to these wild turtles when they've finished their rehabilitation?
00:06:35Let's grab these turtles.
00:06:37Yep.
00:06:38Whoa.
00:06:40Is it technical what you're going to do
00:06:41or are you simply going to pop them in the water?
00:06:43Oh, look, we just place them on the bank and let them wander off into the water.
00:06:46Oh, you put them on the bank.
00:06:47Yeah, we do.
00:06:47Right, oh, well, go for your lives.
00:06:48They know what they're doing.
00:06:49So what do you do, just sort of put them on the edge or put them in the water or
00:06:52what do you do?
00:06:53Just sit them right here on the edge of the water and let them do their thing.
00:07:00Now, that's a bit cleaner water than they've come out of.
00:07:02It's beautiful.
00:07:02Yeah.
00:07:03I love it here.
00:07:03Look at that.
00:07:04Look at that go.
00:07:04How do you feel when you release one into the wild?
00:07:08Oh, look, it feels good knowing that those turtles have come out of a bit of a sticky situation
00:07:12and now they can go off and live their life happily in a picturesque location like this.
00:07:17So hats off to the ferrier.
00:07:19It's a great job.
00:07:20I don't know that I'd have to be stuck in the mud for four hours at a time,
00:07:23but they seem to enjoy it and the rewards speak for themselves.
00:07:43Honestly, it doesn't matter which way you look.
00:07:46Combining right angles, curves and creativity.
00:07:49And master craftsmanship.
00:07:50To a level we've really seen.
00:07:53Lana, look one is ready for you to see.
00:07:55Oh, my gosh, this is incredible.
00:08:06Living in a busy urban area certainly has its perks.
00:08:10But when it's time to switch off and recharge, you want your bedroom to be your sanctuary.
00:08:15The vibe in that space really does matter,
00:08:18which is why I've designed two DIY bed heads that will instantly elevate your sleep zone.
00:08:23And the best part is they're totally rent-a-friendly.
00:08:36Knock, knock. Hello.
00:08:38Hey, hey.
00:08:40Hi, Lana.
00:08:40Hi. How are you?
00:08:42Oh, my goodness.
00:08:43I'm so sorry.
00:08:44I just have to.
00:08:45That's okay.
00:08:45I'll give you a hand.
00:08:47I hear that you're struggling with the design of this room a little bit.
00:08:50Yeah, it's like I love the space, but I want to add personality and I can't nail anything to the
00:08:56wall.
00:08:57It all has to be temporary.
00:08:58I really like to have a sort of neutral base, but I want something to pop, whether it's like the
00:09:04doona, the pillow, the bed head, just to draw your attention to it.
00:09:09Sure.
00:09:09I can work with that brief.
00:09:10The first thing I need to do, though, is just measure the bed so we get the right size for
00:09:14the bed head.
00:09:17Thanks, Lana.
00:09:18So we want it to just overhang the bed a little bit.
00:09:22I think if we go to about $1,400, so it sits about there.
00:09:26That's great.
00:09:29I've had some MDF cut to suit my measurements and it's been under-coded and I want this bed head
00:09:34to have the look of an upholstered padded one, but they can be quite pricey.
00:09:38So I'm using this very cool pool noodle hack.
00:09:41The first thing I'm going to do is just take a bread knife and cut down the center.
00:10:02Now, as much as I love the look of pool noodles, they're not quite the height of fashion, so I've
00:10:07chosen this gorgeous block printed fabric to go over the top of them.
00:10:11The key here is to mark out the center point of your backboard and also iron in a crease in
00:10:20the center of your fabric, and that way the fabric will stay the right way with the pattern and it
00:10:26won't distort.
00:10:32Once you've stapled that center point at the base, you take one of your pool noodle halves and place it
00:10:39over that center point.
00:10:40And just for the first one, I'm going to use some hot glue to hold it in place.
00:10:57Okay, now you take the fabric and you want to pull it up fairly tight over the pool noodle and
00:11:03make sure that that center crease in your fabric is over the middle of the pool noodle.
00:11:10Then hold it tight, grab your staple gun, start on one side and put a staple in somewhere near the
00:11:18top, fairly close to the noodle.
00:11:25Right, now the first one is in, so then you put the fabric back over the pool noodle, press it
00:11:34fairly tight against the noodle and grab your second one on one side.
00:11:40Place it up firmly against the first noodle, pull your first noodle, pull your fabric back over, and then make
00:11:48sure it's straight and lined up.
00:11:51Take your staple gun again and do the exact same thing.
00:11:55Just make sure that you're holding the fabric really firmly so that it's nice and tight.
00:12:09I'm going to continue adding pool noodles just like this, and I'll secure the fabric at the bottom of the
00:12:14board as I go.
00:12:15Folding the excess fabric into pleats to keep it neat and out of the way.
00:12:20On the home stretch now, just this end and the other one, and then I'll fold the fabric over and
00:12:27secure it at the back, and then I'll be done.
00:12:52Oh my gosh, this is incredible.
00:12:55You did ask for a pop of colour, so that's exactly what I gave you on this bare white wall.
00:12:59Honestly, I would have never picked blue for this room, but it works perfectly, and it's like, and the green,
00:13:06I love the green.
00:13:08It's a very classic look, it's timeless, it'll sort of last forever.
00:13:12Yeah, it's incredible, and it feels really calm, like it feels, yeah, I love it.
00:13:17Well, this is the first look. I do have another idea for you. Should I go start working on that?
00:13:23Yeah. Let's go.
00:13:25Okay.
00:13:26This pool noodle headboard looks absolutely stunning, but next week I'm making a headboard that's just as easy, but in
00:13:33a totally different style.
00:13:47One of the most frequent things I get asked about when it comes to our makeovers is, why do we
00:13:51use so many plants and think about how much it costs?
00:13:53Well, yes, we do put a lot of plants in the ground, but the whole idea is to inspire you
00:13:59and get you out in the garden.
00:14:00But what are my favourite three things to do to save a bit of cash?
00:14:04Well, you can plant plants a lot smaller.
00:14:06That sounds obvious, but something like this peace lily, if you bought it in a small 140ml pot, 12 to
00:14:1118 months' time, you'll have something like this.
00:14:14You can plant things that are really easy to propagate. Hydrangeas, for example, they propagate really easily, as do ground
00:14:21cupboards.
00:14:22You can split this up into maybe four plants, spread it around the garden. It's a super easy way to
00:14:26save some cash.
00:14:27The last thing I like to do is think about spacing when it comes to planting.
00:14:37So, when you're planting a garden out, think about how big something's going to be when it's about 75%
00:14:41of its mature height, and plant it at that height.
00:14:44This fat here, for example, I give that about a metre to a metre and a half.
00:14:47So, if you follow those tips, you can have a pretty garden, but it won't cost you a pretty penny.
00:14:58We're turning Mike's untouched single-car garage into a multifunctional space with heaps of storage, and yes, we'll even fit
00:15:05his shiny new car.
00:15:07Pete, you like splashing around the waves.
00:15:09And you like keeping your head in the clouds.
00:15:10We've found an architectural masterpiece that takes the very best of Mother Nature as its inspiration.
00:15:17Stuck in a gardening rut?
00:15:18Well, this issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine is all about exploration.
00:15:22With lots of new things to try.
00:15:24Some plants are stranger than fiction.
00:15:27Take a look at some weird and wacky ones you'll have to see to believe.
00:15:31Are you wanting to move beyond the gardening basics?
00:15:34Find out how to take your skills to the next level.
00:15:37And spice things up by growing colourful chillies with me.
00:15:40Then cook up tasty favourites from your harvest.
00:15:43Grab this month's magazine for a whole world of gardening inspiration.
00:15:46And don't forget your chance to win a million dollars.
00:16:01Pete, there's something so magical about watching waves just kind of lap onto a shoreline.
00:16:07Yeah, right.
00:16:07It's quite mesmerising, the patterns that it makes.
00:16:09Well, I'll tell you what.
00:16:10The next house that we're about to show you, the owner and the architect took that simple idea
00:16:14and said, let's turn it into a house.
00:16:23Oh, and Joe, what an architectural and engineering feat they've created.
00:16:27Confident and curvy.
00:16:29A ceiling that floats amongst the trees.
00:16:31That is magnificent.
00:16:39This is even more beautiful inside.
00:16:41It's amazing.
00:16:42Look, most amazing homes we walk into, we're usually looking down and around.
00:16:46Or at the view.
00:16:47Yeah.
00:16:47But here, the real wow moment is not by looking down, but by looking up at this incredible
00:16:52curving ceiling, which is the real hero of this home.
00:16:55And kind of ironic because the owners in their original brief didn't want concrete news.
00:16:59Can you believe it?
00:16:59I think this would have changed their mind.
00:17:01Well, concrete had a bad name in the 50s and 60s, but here it's light and it's delicate.
00:17:06Yeah.
00:17:07And it's all formed concrete, which means it had to be all formed up in timber.
00:17:10But when you peel that off, you're left with this beautiful patterned patina.
00:17:14You use the word delicate, and I think it's perfect.
00:17:17I think it's that top bank of windows that leaves you with a feeling that this roof is
00:17:20just kind of floating above the entire home.
00:17:23It's a really important point, Joe.
00:17:24It's not only delicate, but elegant.
00:17:26The definition of elegance being something heavy held up by something light, like a stiletto
00:17:31shoe, right?
00:17:32Here we have those poles holding up the concrete roof.
00:17:35Yeah.
00:17:35And then, Pete, you've got the most magnificent lighting, the uplighting, which just highlights
00:17:40everything that you want to appreciate about this ceiling.
00:17:43And then these amazing cloud pendant lights that, honestly, they're very organic shape,
00:17:48but again, they just complement the curves.
00:17:50This house, very much inspired by nature.
00:18:00So it's a two-storey home, but the owners wanted everything that they wanted on one single
00:18:05level.
00:18:06And one of the owners is a sensational cook.
00:18:08So the kitchen was always going to be something pretty spectacular.
00:18:11The bench top, zinc metal, which plays into that minimalist architectural aesthetics.
00:18:16Now, that coolness is offset by the warmth of the Patagonian marble and the beautiful
00:18:21warm timber joinery.
00:18:22But there's always a friendly wrestle between the interior designer and the architecture.
00:18:27Here, the hero's ceiling didn't want to be interrupted by range hoods and piping.
00:18:31So what do they do?
00:18:31So what do they do?
00:18:32They've got this sensational induction cooktop, and it has a pop-up range hood.
00:18:37So that way, all your smoke gets drawn down.
00:18:40But you do have to have some projections through it, like downpipes, and they're inserted through
00:18:44the valley of the roof, and they become design features.
00:18:47You've got all of your appliances here.
00:18:49You've got your wine cellar, your major fridge.
00:18:54One of the silent features, but most important parts of this composition is this horizontal
00:18:59transom, which runs around the edge of the room.
00:19:02Now, it's set at 2.1 metres above the floor, the height of a standard door.
00:19:06It's a modernist technique, which keeps everything at a human scale.
00:19:10Below it, you have all the furnishings and these deep, embracing nooks.
00:19:19Pete, you just walked past this.
00:19:21This is what a wine cellar looks like when it's actually got bottles in it.
00:19:28This has got to be one of the most gorgeous and dramatic powder rooms I think I've ever
00:19:33been in.
00:19:34I'm loving these dark tiles, so your eyes can rest a little, the contrasting light, the
00:19:39toilet that's hidden away back here, and then these arches are just the perfect finishing
00:19:44touch.
00:19:55Wow.
00:19:56Look in here.
00:19:58This is extraordinary.
00:20:00I mean, the walk-in robe, that is something else.
00:20:03And this entouille, it goes for days either way.
00:20:07Beautiful deep bath at that end.
00:20:09I mentioned in the powder room how they'd chosen dramatic dark tiles and how it was about
00:20:13resting your eyes.
00:20:13I mean, look how light-filled this house is with so much glass.
00:20:17They've done it quite deliberately in all of the bathrooms and also with the colour paint
00:20:22choice here is to make those intimate areas feel a little bit more cave-like.
00:20:26Yeah, the dark colour helps embrace and makes it more intimate.
00:20:29Jo, I cannot get over this roof.
00:20:32I know.
00:20:32I mean, we've got to salute the builders and the traders that put this together.
00:20:36I mean, these dips and curves aren't random.
00:20:39They're carefully choreographed to allow the neighbours to see through the dips out to
00:20:44the view.
00:20:45Now, the glass is a story in itself.
00:20:47Yeah.
00:20:47It went in last.
00:20:48They had to cut out one-to-one plywood shapes, then hand that to the glazier, who then laser
00:20:55cut it, and then he inserted it.
00:20:56I mean, this is surgeon-like precision.
00:20:59I mean, but the result is, I mean, it'd be like sleeping underneath a wave.
00:21:11Wow, this home just continues to deliver, Pete.
00:21:14Now that we've stepped outside, I honestly feel like we've gone into some kind of, I
00:21:17don't know, high-end resort or spa.
00:21:20Well, speaking of resorts, the original brief was to create a private sanctuary, which was
00:21:25experimental and immersive.
00:21:27We'll have done that.
00:21:28I mean, look at this pool.
00:21:30Look at this little separation.
00:21:31These tiles almost look like it's its own separate pontoon, and accessible by both the
00:21:36master bedroom and the main home.
00:21:38We've certainly dived into high-end design tonight.
00:21:55And then the downstairs level is all about the guests.
00:22:00There's three guest bedrooms, very well proportioned, each with their own en-suite and landscape
00:22:05courtyard.
00:22:05Yeah, there's also a laundry, another powder room, and then there's something else that
00:22:10you just have to see and believe.
00:22:14Well, Pete, if you're going to create the perfect sanctuary, I don't think things get
00:22:18more luxurious than this.
00:22:19Yeah, a car on its own lazy susan.
00:22:21A little turntable.
00:22:23So put it this way, you never have to worry about reversing out your driveway.
00:22:26Would you be full comfortable driving that?
00:22:28Of course I would.
00:22:29No, I wouldn't, really.
00:22:39This has been such a treat.
00:22:41It's so easy to see why this home has been making waves in architectural circles.
00:22:45It's already been shortlisted for a number of awards, and I'm certain it is going to win
00:22:49many more going into the future.
00:22:51Yeah, and well done to architect Nick Kent, who, by the way, worked in the office of the
00:22:55great Australian architect Bruce Rickard, who himself was a disciple of the great American
00:22:59architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who very much is the inspiration to 20th century modernism.
00:23:04And I think both of those masters would be proud of this effort.
00:23:07Well, you can definitely see those touches all throughout this design.
00:23:09It is an absolute triumph.
00:23:11I'm sure the wave house will continue to create a few more ripples.
00:23:14I see what you did there.
00:23:17Coming up, life's not always peaches and cream.
00:23:21Sometimes the little custard's good too.
00:23:23Well, I'll definitely be making it again.
00:23:27And so will you.
00:23:28And is your garage driving you mad?
00:23:31You too can transform your garage into a smarter zone with these storage systems.
00:23:36And the best part is, you can get it done in a weekend.
00:23:46This segment proudly brought to you by Bunnings Warehouse, where you can get the lowest prices
00:23:52every day.
00:23:55Now here's something most of us can relate to.
00:23:57We've got a 1960s home that's recently been updated with a single car garage that hasn't
00:24:02been touched.
00:24:03And now the owner, here he comes now, has decided to go all 21st century and buy himself
00:24:08a beautiful new shiny EV.
00:24:11That's two worlds colliding.
00:24:13What could possibly go wrong?
00:24:19Oh, look at this.
00:24:22Wow-wee.
00:24:24Mike, how are you?
00:24:26G'day, Adam.
00:24:27How's it going?
00:24:28Loving the wheels, mate.
00:24:30Yeah.
00:24:30No, she's a great car.
00:24:32Absolutely beautiful.
00:24:33Definitely a car you'd want to lock up at night.
00:24:35Absolutely.
00:24:36You know, with all the bush around here, we're lucky to have it, but that also means a lot
00:24:39of dust.
00:24:39Yeah, well, let's talk about the garage.
00:24:41I can already see one big problem.
00:24:43Yeah.
00:24:44Well, the car doesn't fit, mate.
00:24:46Yeah.
00:24:48I think there's a wall in the way.
00:24:50Yeah, it's a bit of a problem.
00:24:51Yeah, yeah.
00:24:52And what about, you know, obviously you've got clutter like everyone does in the garage.
00:24:56I've got to say it's not too bad, but you need storage in your garage as well, don't
00:24:59you?
00:24:59Yeah, that'd be super helpful.
00:25:01We just bring stuff down, don't have time to think about it too much with three kids,
00:25:05so anything that doesn't fit upstairs, come straight down here.
00:25:08Come straight down here.
00:25:08But now you've got a new baby, so we need to make room for that, yeah?
00:25:13Absolutely.
00:25:13But also, we need to make storage, because we need somewhere to put all this stuff, yeah?
00:25:17Yeah, that'd be ideal.
00:25:19And what about, how are you charging the car?
00:25:21Well, at the moment, I'm just running it up to the public EV charger at the shops.
00:25:24Okay.
00:25:25So maybe we think about getting a fast charger in here or something?
00:25:28If you can make it happen.
00:25:29Well, only if you get those guns to work, mate, and start moving those weights.
00:25:33Have you seen how dusty they are?
00:25:34I've seen the size of your arms.
00:25:41What?
00:25:42Jesus, what's in here?
00:25:47With everything cleared out, it is already looking better.
00:25:50Now, one thing you want to look out for when you're working on a garage of this age is to
00:25:54check for asbestos.
00:25:56If you think you've got it, get the professionals in.
00:25:58Now, in our case, we're lucky.
00:26:00We've got some masonry walls here and this timber wall.
00:26:03And lucky for me, this is non-structural, which means I can simply just clear it out.
00:26:10How easy is that?
00:26:17Woo-hoo!
00:26:18Too easy.
00:26:18Now, obviously, this wall did serve a purpose, making a storage room back here.
00:26:23But now, we need all the room we can get.
00:26:25So, it's got to go.
00:26:41I have to say, this garage feels huge with this dividing wall taken out, but just a little bit mismatched.
00:26:48Now, we all know that one of the key things to a safe workspace is making sure you have good
00:26:53lighting.
00:26:54And it's fair to say, this garage does not have that.
00:26:56So, some new lights will help fix that up.
00:26:59But you know what else brightens an area?
00:27:01Well, a fresh coat of paint.
00:27:16It is amazing what a little bit of paint can do.
00:27:19How much better does this look?
00:27:21Now, while this dries, I'm going to head up to the hardware store to deck this garage out.
00:27:25Ooh-hoo!
00:27:29Ooh-hoo!
00:27:33Ooh-hoo!
00:27:34Ooh-hoo!
00:27:35Ooh-hoo!
00:27:35Looks like everything I need is upstairs.
00:27:37Ooh-hoo-hoo!
00:27:39Ooh-hoo-hoo!
00:27:40Now, maybe someday...
00:27:42The secret to a successful garage is really all about maximising space and storage.
00:27:48And here at Bunnings, they have a huge range of heavy-duty modular systems with flexible floor plans
00:27:54to help you to create the perfect multi-purpose hub and make the most out of every square metre.
00:28:08And one really efficient way to do that is with these ceiling mount systems, which allow you to put tubs
00:28:14up on the ceiling.
00:28:16Absolutely fantastic.
00:28:17Get everything off the ground.
00:28:19Ooh-hoo!
00:28:30The thing that I love about this aisle is they have all the displays set up so you can see
00:28:35what you need.
00:28:36I think to start off, I'm going to get these wire shelves here.
00:28:39We need extra storage.
00:28:41And then that workbench is looking at me.
00:28:43Every garage needs a good workbench.
00:28:45And while I'm at it, I'll grab a couple of those cabinets.
00:28:48Oh, this is what I'm looking for.
00:28:50Now, did you know that Bunnings has a large range of EV chargers and batteries for the home?
00:28:56And I did promise Mike, if he helped me out with the clear-out, I'll get him a little surprise.
00:29:00And I don't think I can go past this.
00:29:02He's going to absolutely love it, and it'll finish off the garage perfectly.
00:29:12The spark has been and hooked up some new lights.
00:29:15It looks fantastic.
00:29:17And now, the first thing I'm putting together is this new heavy-duty shelving unit that I picked up.
00:29:22And the best thing about them is they're super easy to put together.
00:29:25There's no screws or bolts.
00:29:27Everything just taps in place.
00:29:29And this matte black finish, well, it's going to look great against our nice new white walls.
00:29:50And I've got to say, that has to be the quickest shelving unit I've ever put together.
00:29:55Probably took all the five minutes.
00:30:02Look at that.
00:30:03One down.
00:30:04A few more to go.
00:30:17Nice.
00:30:18And the best thing about these locked-up cabinets is anything you want to keep away from the kids that's
00:30:23not safe for them can simply be put in here, locked up, you're going to take the keys with you.
00:30:27Come on.
00:30:40Look at that.
00:30:41And it's the perfect weekend workstation.
00:30:44Just grab what you want.
00:30:45Cut up a few things.
00:30:47Beautiful.
00:30:48A little later, a few more bits and pieces to fit out in Mike's garage.
00:30:52Then the big question, will his car now fit?
00:30:57This segment was proudly brought to you by Bunnings Warehouse, where you can get the lowest prices every day.
00:31:06They flower their socks off and they're super low maintenance.
00:31:10This could be the best ground-covering rose for your garden.
00:31:13Today I'm utilising the peach on the beach.
00:31:18Do you get it?
00:31:21To catch up on any stories you've missed, plus find lots of pet training tips and tricks, as well as
00:31:26loads of cute animals and exclusive content, check us out on 7+.
00:31:40It's an absolute peach of a day, but I'm about to make this day a whole lot better by making
00:31:47the best peach tart you're going to see.
00:31:53So this recipe will use about six peaches.
00:31:56So you don't want them too soft.
00:31:58You want a little bit of firmness in there, because we're going to cook them.
00:32:01Twist it.
00:32:04Do that six times.
00:32:15We're going to slice our peaches.
00:32:17It's not too thin.
00:32:17You want a little bit of thickness.
00:32:21Get them into a bowl.
00:32:27That's enough peaches.
00:32:29Now we're going to add a little bit of flavouring.
00:32:32I've got some nutmeg.
00:32:34About a teaspoon of nutmeg.
00:32:37And this wins will be interesting.
00:32:41There you go.
00:32:42Teaspoon of nutmeg.
00:32:45Any condition, I'm here for Better Homes and Gardens.
00:32:48Doesn't matter.
00:32:48I'm here for you.
00:32:54All right, got my nutmeg.
00:32:56Got my cinnamon.
00:32:57Little bit of lemon zest.
00:33:03I've got some thyme.
00:33:04A little bit of lemon thyme.
00:33:05Thyme or lemon thyme.
00:33:07Now, a lot of people don't associate a herb like this with sweet cookery,
00:33:11but it really emphasises the peach.
00:33:14So add a little bit of our thyme in there.
00:33:16Pick it in.
00:33:19A little pinch of salt helps bring everything out.
00:33:26And about a teaspoon of vanilla paste.
00:33:30Look at the wind.
00:33:31Go.
00:33:33And now what you do is just mix it.
00:33:39So let the peaches get covered in all that flavour.
00:33:43All right, so that's our peaches.
00:33:45Nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, lemon zest.
00:33:48That goes there.
00:33:49I need something to go under the peaches.
00:33:51So I thought, why not apricots and nuts?
00:33:54Because it's going to be soft.
00:33:55It's going to be sweet.
00:33:56So I soaked some apricots.
00:33:59So about a handful.
00:34:00Just drain them off.
00:34:01It would be like a little soft bed for it to sit on.
00:34:04Give them a quick chop.
00:34:10The next we've got macadamia nuts.
00:34:12Great for roasting.
00:34:13Great texture.
00:34:14It's about the same nuts.
00:34:15A little bit of my thyme.
00:34:17Just roughly chop that as well.
00:34:26All right, get that into a bowl.
00:34:38All we need now is the pastry.
00:34:40And a little secret ingredient that's going to sweeten this dish up.
00:34:43I love to use puff pastry for this.
00:34:45Just because it swells up around whatever you're going to use it in.
00:34:48I roll it out.
00:34:51Great from the fridge.
00:34:52Work with it when it's cold.
00:34:54All right, I was thinking something under the peaches.
00:34:57Because the peaches are going to be quite sweet.
00:34:59So marmalade.
00:35:00Because the marmalade is a little bit bitter.
00:35:02So that with the sweetness.
00:35:04And it's going to add a nice stickiness when you roast it.
00:35:07So you've got your marmalade.
00:35:12So I reckon a generous helping.
00:35:14And we're just going to spread it like you would on bread.
00:35:20Look at that.
00:35:24We've got our nut and apricot mix.
00:35:26We're going to spread that on.
00:35:30So we don't want to go right to the edge.
00:35:32So leave a little barrier and spread that out.
00:35:37So we've still got a little sort of picture frame around the actual pastry.
00:35:43So you get your peaches.
00:35:46And basically, you're just going to overlap the whole way along the tart.
00:35:51Fitting as many as you can in.
00:35:54Be generous.
00:36:07All right, you've basically covered all your apricot and your nuts.
00:36:10And now what you want to do is just lock everything in.
00:36:12And just sort of roll the pastry.
00:36:14So it forms a little guard.
00:36:17And this is what happens is this will blow up around the pastry when we cook it.
00:36:21All right.
00:36:22Beautiful.
00:36:22So that encloses in all your tart.
00:36:25And that will puff up when we roast it.
00:36:27Onto a roasting tray.
00:36:32So that goes in the oven.
00:36:34200 degrees for about 25 minutes until the pastry is crisp underneath.
00:36:47All right.
00:36:48What goes well with a tart?
00:36:50A custard.
00:36:51So I'm going to use about 250 mils of cream.
00:36:55250 mils of milk.
00:36:57Bring it to the boil.
00:37:03I'm going to flavour that with two tablespoons of white sugar.
00:37:08Just to sweeten it.
00:37:12A little bit of nutmeg.
00:37:14Just a little bit.
00:37:17A little pinch of vanilla.
00:37:28About six to eight egg yolks, depending on the size of the egg.
00:37:31So separate your eggs.
00:37:33You just want the yolks.
00:37:34So the yolk is what thickens it.
00:37:39Freeze your egg whites for later on.
00:37:42Just whisk them.
00:37:47All right.
00:37:48The reason that you don't put the egg yolks straight into the boiling hot cream is you'll have scrambled
00:37:54eggs straight away.
00:37:55So what you do is you pour the boiling hot cream into the cold egg yolks and cold bowl.
00:38:01So a little bit at a time.
00:38:03So pour a little bit in.
00:38:07Give it a mix just to incorporate.
00:38:22Now what we do is mixture back into our pot.
00:38:28And onto the flame.
00:38:30Now this is where you do not walk away.
00:38:33You just stir it and it will thicken.
00:38:36But as it heats, the egg yolks are going to cook.
00:38:39So what happens is it should coat the back of the spoon and you're left with a mark.
00:38:45That tells you it's thick enough.
00:38:46So it's not overly thick.
00:38:47It's a very light custard.
00:38:50Get it off into a cold bowl.
00:39:05So what you do now is, off the tray.
00:39:09So you just want to get a nice slice.
00:39:20Look at that.
00:39:21So you've got the soft fruit, the crunchy nuts.
00:39:24You've got those peaches melting.
00:39:26You've got the marmalade that's making it sticky sauce.
00:39:29You've got the marmalade that's making it sticky sauce.
00:39:33That, drizzle some custards.
00:39:43Oh yeah, the marmalade is stand-up.
00:39:46I'll definitely be making it again.
00:39:49And so will you.
00:39:59Not all roses are created equal.
00:40:01So I'm going to introduce you to some superstar performers that are a cut above the rest.
00:40:06That is the big question.
00:40:08Does the car fit in the garage?
00:40:09Let's find out.
00:40:10Let's find out.
00:40:11You've always wanted to try DIY or craft.
00:40:14The explore issue of Better Homes and Gardens magazine will give you all the inspiration you
00:40:18need to get started.

00:40:56If you ask me, the ideal garage should be one that's match fit for weekend sports, DIY projects
00:41:04and all that seasonal storage.
00:41:06So I'm helping my mate Mike re-imagine his single car garage.
00:41:11And we don't want to forget about that unused space sitting right above our heads.
00:41:15So now I'm ready to put the ceiling mounts on.
00:41:18Like I say, you can never have too many containers.
00:41:32Now it's ready for a test run.
00:41:37Look at that.
00:41:38They're fantastic.
00:41:40I can even walk underneath it.
00:41:42There's a room.
00:41:42And I'm enjoying it.
00:41:57Well, this garage is definitely coming together.
00:41:59But now I want to add a little bit of a personal touch.
00:42:02And I've got a great idea for this spot right here.
00:42:07So the plan is to make a wall unit.
00:42:09It's basically like a spice rack for all your bits and pieces like your spray cans, your glues
00:42:14and your gap filler.
00:42:16The material I'm using is some 140 by 19 dressed pine.
00:42:20Easy to get your hands on from the hardware saw.
00:42:22The only thing I have done is given it a coat of undercoat.
00:42:25And also, I've got this 42 by 19, which I'm going to use as my mounting block.
00:42:30So first thing I need to do is cut everything to size.
00:42:49All right, so the way this works is we've got two sides.
00:42:53They're 600 mil long.
00:42:55Then I've got five shelves.
00:42:57They're 400 mil long and those mounting blocks, which are also 400 mil.
00:43:02Now, I'm just going to start by making the perimeter of the frame.
00:43:06Counting on, dipping ideas, drifting away.
00:43:11Past and present, they don't matter, not a future, sort it out.
00:43:29All right, so that is the main frame together.
00:43:32But you can see you're not going to be storing much in here with just a rectangle.
00:43:36So to fix that up, I'm going to be adding these shelves.
00:43:38Now, here's a handy little tip.
00:43:39If you don't have a protractor, you can simply print one off like I have here.
00:43:43And then I'm going to be using my bevel to set the angle, which for me is 25 degrees.
00:43:49Now, the reason why I'm doing that is if I set these shelves in square,
00:43:52this would have to be a lot taller to fit all the bits and pieces in.
00:43:56So by putting it on the angle, that allows you to keep it compact,
00:44:00slide all your stuff in, and it is a great little space saver.
00:44:03All right, so when it comes to using this protractor, you want to start on the 90.
00:44:08That's basically, that is our zero, and then we want to subtract 25 from that
00:44:12to get our 25-degree angle.
00:44:15So that means I'll pull this across to the 65.
00:44:18Make sure we're lined up in the centre down here at our pivot point.
00:44:23And then you know that you've got the correct angle, and you can lock it in place.
00:44:44I'm going to get some matte black spray paint, go over the whole lot,
00:44:47which will tie everything together.
00:45:03How good does that look? Absolutely works a treat.
00:45:06And if you like this project and want to give it a go yourself
00:45:09and you need the worksheet, make sure you drop us an email.
00:45:27Oh, and the EV charger, Mike is going to absolutely love that.
00:45:31It will be perfect for his car.
00:45:33And this StoreEase starter kit is great for getting everything off the ground.
00:45:37Thinking about the weekend, I'm thinking about the weekend,
00:45:42I'm thinking about the weekend, I'm what I do with you.
00:45:47I'm thinking about the weekend, I'm what I do with you.
00:45:52There's only one thing left to do.
00:45:54Let's see what Mike thinks of it.
00:45:57Hey, Mike, this is unbelievable.
00:46:02A little bit different.
00:46:04Oh, overhead storage.
00:46:06Yeah.
00:46:07I mean, straight away, you can see how much of a difference
00:46:09the paintwork makes, doesn't it?
00:46:11It just brightens the whole area.
00:46:13And then these lights as well.
00:46:14I mean, you can actually see what's going on here.
00:46:16It's really just opened the whole thing up.
00:46:18I never have thought we'd have this much room in here.
00:46:21Yeah, well, it's amazing, actually,
00:46:22because as soon as we took this dividing wall out,
00:46:25it just blew the whole area wide open,
00:46:27and it's allowed us to get these smart storage systems in.
00:46:30I mean, each one of these shelves can take 600 kilos.
00:46:33Sounds like I'm going to need to buy more weights.
00:46:35You might have that home gym, finally.
00:46:37Yeah, definitely, definitely.
00:46:38And you've even got some locked-up cabinets over here,
00:46:41so if you want to keep stuff out of the way of the kids,
00:46:43you can put it in there.
00:46:44Yeah, fantastic.
00:46:44But most importantly, obviously, I like my DIY,
00:46:47so I did get you a little workstation here.
00:46:50You're inspiring me, Adam.
00:46:51I might have to get a little bit more handy myself.
00:46:53Yeah, definitely, mate.
00:46:54If you need some tips, mate, 7 o'clock, Channel 7.
00:46:57Now, I did say at the start,
00:46:59if you help me clear out and move those heavy weights,
00:47:01I might get you a surprise.
00:47:03How about this little EV charger here, mate?
00:47:05Mate.
00:47:05Hey?
00:47:06Oh, that's fantastic.
00:47:08That's going to help you out, isn't it?
00:47:10No, absolutely.
00:47:10It's going to definitely save me a lot of time.
00:47:12I can do this overnight while the car's parked in here, hopefully.
00:47:16Well, that is the big question.
00:47:18Does the car fit in the garage?
00:47:19Let's find out.
00:47:20Let's go.
00:47:26Bring it in, mate.
00:47:31Fingers crossed.
00:47:39Look at this.
00:47:41You can even swing the door open.
00:47:46You know what I say that is?
00:47:48Mate, that is a job well done.
00:47:49Absolutely nailed it.
00:48:07Coming up, Melissa's visiting a flower farm
00:48:10that'll sweep you off your feet.
00:48:12It really is hard not to fall in love with roses.
00:48:15And if your pot of trees are struggling,
00:48:18there's only one man for the job.
00:48:20I've got an olive to save.
00:48:24So much better.
00:48:35Roses bring so much joy to our lives.
00:48:37It's no wonder they're called the Queen of Flowers.
00:48:40So they symbolise love and beauty,
00:48:42and they're appreciated the world over
00:48:44for their spectacular colour and fragrance.
00:48:47Just magnificent.
00:48:48So if you're looking for some top-performing varieties
00:48:50for your home garden,
00:48:52well, this amazing place may just have you coming up roses.
00:48:55I was living my life until you came along
00:49:00A person that could do no wrong
00:49:03I'm in Sylvan, Victoria,
00:49:05in the stunning Dandenong Ranges
00:49:07at the Anthony Tesler International Trial Gardens,
00:49:09which aren't open to the public,
00:49:11so we're really lucky to be here.
00:49:12It's like a living showroom of plants
00:49:15spread over two and a half acres.
00:49:17And it's not just roses that they trial here,
00:49:19it's a whole bunch of different plants.
00:49:21But today, it's a rose-lover's paradise.
00:49:31So, Justin, you guys are expert plant breeders and selectors.
00:49:35What is it that you're looking for out of the trial gardens here?
00:49:37Well, basically, Melissa, with these trial gardens,
00:49:40we're looking to bring new plant varieties into Australia,
00:49:42so we need to make sure they perform in our climate and environments.
00:49:47And what is it that you are looking for in a top-performing plant?
00:49:50Basically, we need to know that it's going to perform
00:49:53and be easy maintenance,
00:49:56lots of flowers if it's flowering,
00:49:58but just easy care is the main thing we want.
00:50:01We want the gardener to put it in the ground
00:50:03and it be no fuss.
00:50:05So, in a way, you're doing all the hard work for the home gardener?
00:50:08That's right.
00:50:09So, we'll trial these plants for up to seven years
00:50:12to make sure that they perform as expected.
00:50:15And I can't go without talking about the colour of this rose.
00:50:18Yeah, this was an old variety that we trialled a number of years ago.
00:50:21We loved the colour,
00:50:22but unfortunately, there were other aspects to it
00:50:25that didn't suit what we were looking for for the home gardener.
00:50:28And I guess that does happen, does it?
00:50:30You spend all this time on something
00:50:32and then it doesn't necessarily, you know, play out.
00:50:34Exactly, and unfortunately, this is one of those for us.
00:50:37So, we still keep it here because we love the form of it,
00:50:41but, yeah, there's aspects of it that just don't suit.
00:50:44I love that you're looking for that.
00:50:45And that's what a trial garden's for, right?
00:50:47Yeah, exactly.
00:50:48So, yeah, we kiss many frogs here.
00:50:51And end up with a prince.
00:51:04Taking centre stage of the showpiece roses.
00:51:07Now, these are a great example of how good things come with time
00:51:10because these roses have been 20 years in the making.
00:51:13And you can see why.
00:51:14They're just stunning.
00:51:15So, they've got full, double, large flowers
00:51:19and they're highly fragrant.
00:51:20So, they have a touch of old world charm,
00:51:22but they also have everything that we love about the modern roses.
00:51:26So, for example, they're long flowering.
00:51:27You get blooms on these plants from late spring
00:51:30all the way through to winter
00:51:31and they have excellent disease resistance.
00:51:33And you can see they're nice and compact.
00:51:36So, they have a great shape
00:51:37and they only grow to about a metre tall,
00:51:39which makes them perfect for small gardens and patios.
00:51:42This beautiful one here is called Champagne.
00:51:45You can see it has beautiful apricot tones through the flower.
00:51:49Here's another stunner.
00:51:50This is lipstick.
00:51:51You can see that the buds start out bright red,
00:51:54but then they turn to this gorgeous sort of hot pink colour.
00:51:58And then another of my favourites, Blush, over here,
00:52:01which has a blush coloured flower,
00:52:02but the foliage is really beautiful and glossy
00:52:05and it's perfect in pots and containers.
00:52:15It's been around for 30-plus years,
00:52:17but the flower carpet rose
00:52:18is still the world's number one ground-covering rose
00:52:21and it's easy to see why.
00:52:23So, this is a collection that was released in 1992
00:52:26and when it was released,
00:52:27it really did change the face of what we think a rose should be
00:52:31because it was a no-fuss plant.
00:52:33And as a result, it introduced the world of roses
00:52:36to a whole new generation of amateur and novice gardeners.
00:52:40And it's a plant that's got a lot going for it.
00:52:42So, for a start, the sheer number of flowers.
00:52:44You get masses of flowers on this plant
00:52:46for up to 10 months of the year.
00:52:48And the flowers are self-cleaning,
00:52:50so there's no need to deadhead
00:52:51and even pruning is optional.
00:52:54Now, every year,
00:52:54the collection keeps getting bigger and better
00:52:57and this is the latest star in the range.
00:52:58So, this one is called Flower Carpet Mini Cherry.
00:53:01So, you can see it's got a smaller flower
00:53:03than a lot of the other varieties in the range,
00:53:05but look at the sheer number of flowers on this plant.
00:53:08It's also nice and compact but still sprawling,
00:53:11so it's perfect for mass-covering the ground,
00:53:13using it in borders or, of course, pots.
00:53:30The flower carpet roses are so low-maintenance
00:53:33that even if you decide not to prune,
00:53:35they'll still flower on a slightly larger bush.
00:53:37But if you do decide to prune, it's super easy.
00:53:39Super easy.
00:53:40As simple as a hedge trimmer.
00:53:41We've all got one now.
00:53:42There's no fancy pruning
00:53:43and they really are the best rose
00:53:45for a novice or amateur gardener
00:53:47that's looking to get into roses.
00:53:49Yeah, so we're talking like two-thirds back in the winter?
00:53:52Two-thirds back in the winter.
00:53:53They'll flower in the spring
00:53:54right through the following winter.
00:53:56Honestly, super simple.
00:53:57There's no reason not to grow roses at home.
00:53:59That's right.
00:54:00They're perfect.
00:54:09It really is hard not to fall in love with roses
00:54:13and thanks to expert breeding and selection
00:54:15and rigorous testing in trial gardens like this,
00:54:18as home gardeners,
00:54:19we really do have access to the pick of the best.
00:54:21So next time you're out at your local garden centre,
00:54:24make sure you check out some of these gorgeous varieties.
00:54:26And you know I'm going to say it this weekend.
00:54:29Take some time out to smell the roses.
00:54:31Wish I left you right where I found you.
00:54:36Some people get too big for their boots.
00:54:39This olive, much too big for its pot.
00:54:44If you're after international inspiration

00:55:26If I was to say to you that this olive tree here was rooted,
00:55:29you might say to me,
00:55:30looks pretty healthy, Charles.
00:55:31And I would reply,
00:55:32stop that filthy language.
00:55:33This is a family show.
00:55:34I'm using a technical term, of course.
00:55:36The plant's so healthy,
00:55:38it's bust through the bottom of the pot
00:55:39and it is completely stuck.
00:55:41Now, it could stay like this
00:55:42and live a healthy life,
00:55:43but it's not really in the right spot
00:55:44and it's going to be much happier
00:55:46if I can get it into the ground.
00:55:47But before I move it,
00:55:49I need to work out exactly how a tree works.
00:55:58It is easy to forget with trees
00:56:01that what you see above the ground in the canopy
00:56:03is replicated below the ground in the root zone.
00:56:06Now, that doesn't mean the roots go as deep
00:56:07as the plant is high,
00:56:09but they do spread out
00:56:10two to three times the width of the plant.
00:56:12And that is all part of the ingenious design
00:56:14that keeps them upright
00:56:15during rain, hail or shine.
00:56:24Of course, you can keep big trees in pots,
00:56:26but it's not set and forget
00:56:27like when you plant them in the ground.
00:56:29And bonsais are a great example of this.
00:56:32You can keep massive trees
00:56:33like oaks and maples
00:56:34in tiny little pots,
00:56:35but you will have to water them
00:56:37at least a couple of times a day.
00:56:38There's a strict feeding regime
00:56:39and then there's the repotting.
00:56:41But enough about that.
00:56:42I've got an olive to save.
00:56:53We could easily lift this olive up,
00:56:55put it into a bigger pot
00:56:56and it would have a happy life
00:56:57if we kept it pruned.
00:56:58But I want it to reach its full potential.
00:57:00So we're going to put it in a nice sunny spot.
00:57:03We're digging the hole
00:57:04before we start moving it.
00:57:05And the reason we do that
00:57:06is because we don't want to leave it
00:57:08out of the ground for too long
00:57:09because it adds too much stress.
00:57:10And because we're reducing
00:57:11the root system by so much,
00:57:12we also need to reduce the canopy.
00:57:14It lessens the transpiration rate.
00:57:16And also as it's in fruit,
00:57:18it stops the energy going into those fruit
00:57:20and the plant will start
00:57:21putting out new roots.
00:57:22I've also noticed
00:57:23it's not particularly healthy.
00:57:24It's covered in scale.
00:57:25So by reducing the canopy,
00:57:26we remove a lot of that scale
00:57:28and the fresh growth
00:57:29will have less of it.
00:57:30So get on to a bit of pruning.
00:57:42This may seem quite harsh,
00:57:44but it is a really important step
00:57:46and olives can take
00:57:47a really hard prune back.
00:57:49One thing you do want to make sure
00:57:50you're doing at the same time
00:57:51is remove any crossing branches
00:57:52like that one
00:57:53because over time
00:57:54they're only going to impede
00:57:55on the plant's growth.
00:57:57I'm pretty happy with that.
00:57:58The next stage we have to go to
00:57:59is removing the pot it's in.
00:58:01I'm going to use an angle grinder.
00:58:02I'm going to cut around the base
00:58:03and then up the sides
00:58:04and it should just peel away with ease.
00:58:22So if you were moving a plant
00:58:24that was in the ground,
00:58:25you'd want to take as much
00:58:26of the root ball
00:58:26as you possibly could
00:58:27but here
00:58:29our hole's pretty much
00:58:30been dug for us.
00:58:31We've got all the roots
00:58:31we need in the pot.
00:58:33We do have one
00:58:34that's obviously gone
00:58:35through the bottom of the pot
00:58:37into the ground.
00:58:37So I'm just going to
00:58:38try and lift it
00:58:39with this shovel
00:58:41to see exactly
00:58:41what we're dealing with.
00:58:45That was a lot easier
00:58:47than I thought it was going to be.
00:58:48I thought we might have to
00:58:49chop through that
00:58:50but you can see here
00:58:51that was the root
00:58:53going through the bottom
00:58:54of the pot.
00:58:55So we've severed that
00:58:56and you can see
00:58:57all the roots coming out
00:58:59into the ground.
00:59:01So it's time to get this
00:59:01into our hole.
00:59:05What you'll often find
00:59:06when you're planting up
00:59:09a pot that's been rooted
00:59:10is it's really root bound.
00:59:12So this mat of roots
00:59:13just won't let fresh roots out
00:59:14so you really need
00:59:15to disturb the surface.
00:59:16If it's really bad
00:59:17you can take an old hand saw
00:59:19and cut down the edge
00:59:20so you've got fresh potting mix.
00:59:21This one luckily for us
00:59:23isn't too bad
00:59:23so I can just use my fingers
00:59:25to rough up the edge
00:59:26of the root ball
00:59:28making sure we've got
00:59:29plenty of potting mix
00:59:30exposed for fresh roots
00:59:32to get out into our new soil.
00:59:34Now once that's done
00:59:35it can go directly
00:59:36into the hole.
00:59:36We've improved that
00:59:37with compost
00:59:37so it holds on to moisture
00:59:39and nutrients for longer
00:59:41and simple standard
00:59:42planting procedure
00:59:43not too deep
00:59:43not too shallow
00:59:45you want the orientation
00:59:46to be perfect
00:59:47so you don't have to
00:59:48move it again
00:59:48then we just backfill
00:59:49and water it in.
01:00:05When it comes to watering
01:00:07more is more
01:00:07you really do want
01:00:08to soak the ground
01:00:09that helps to get
01:00:10the soil in contact
01:00:11with the root system
01:00:12of the plant
01:00:13which will mean
01:00:14they'll dry out
01:00:14a lot less quickly
01:00:15and you'll have
01:00:16a lot less stress plants.
01:00:17Do it nice and slowly
01:00:18don't try and soak it
01:00:19too quickly
01:00:20that way it works
01:00:21its way in.
01:00:22Once you finish
01:00:22with the hose
01:00:23I like to get
01:00:24a watering can
01:00:24with some seaweed tonic
01:00:26and finish it off
01:00:27with that.
01:00:27Now you don't do this first
01:00:28otherwise you'll just
01:00:29wash it through
01:00:30and I use this
01:00:31over a fertilizer
01:00:32because a fertilizer
01:00:33will push out
01:00:33new growth
01:00:34whereas this
01:00:35will just reduce
01:00:35the stress
01:00:36on your new plant.
01:00:48So within about
01:00:4812 months
01:00:49our olive tree
01:00:50is going to be
01:00:50looking like
01:00:51it never rooted
01:00:52itself in its pot
01:00:53in that location
01:00:53it's going to bounce
01:00:54right back
01:00:55in the perfect world
01:00:56we would have moved
01:00:57it before it had put
01:00:58roots down through
01:00:59the pot
01:00:59and into the ground
01:01:00now something like this
01:01:01this is the perfect time
01:01:02to pop this into the ground
01:01:03this is ficus lyrata
01:01:05you'd want to rough
01:01:06those roots up
01:01:07this one on the other hand
01:01:08well this one
01:01:10you can tell by the roots
01:01:10on the top
01:01:11it's already pretty root bound
01:01:13so I'm going to show you
01:01:13how to revive this
01:01:14and put it up
01:01:15into a bigger pot
01:01:16oh have a look at that
01:01:20like the olive tree
01:01:21we need to remove
01:01:22some of the canopy
01:01:22before we start
01:01:23tampering with the roots
01:01:24I'm going to start
01:01:25with any of the crossing limbs
01:01:26and take them down
01:01:28as low as I can
01:01:32just take the tips
01:01:33off this one too
01:01:35so then from those cuts
01:01:36we're going to get
01:01:37new shoots
01:01:38and it just reduces
01:01:39that canopy
01:01:40a little bit further
01:01:42and with that done
01:01:43shoot that one there
01:01:45I can get on
01:01:45to pruning the roots
01:01:47now you can see
01:01:48how these roots
01:01:48are circling around
01:01:50because they've been
01:01:51stuck in the pot
01:01:51for too long
01:01:52if I put this
01:01:52into a bigger pot
01:01:53new roots aren't
01:01:54going to be able
01:01:54to get out
01:01:55and they're just
01:01:55going to keep
01:01:55going round and round
01:01:56so you can take
01:01:57your secateurs
01:01:58and trim them all off
01:01:59but I find
01:01:59using an old timber saw
01:02:02is a much better way
01:02:03to do it
01:02:03especially if it's
01:02:04an old one
01:02:04you're not worried
01:02:05about it getting blunt
01:02:05and what you want to do
01:02:06is basically cut
01:02:07the edge of the roots off
01:02:19well you can tell
01:02:19I'm a landscaper
01:02:20and not a carpenter
01:02:21but there's plenty
01:02:21of space here
01:02:22for new roots
01:02:23to get out
01:02:23into the fresh potting mix
01:02:25and you want to be
01:02:25using the best
01:02:26you can afford
01:02:27to give your plants
01:02:28the nutrition they need
01:02:29to make sure
01:02:30they don't get pot bound
01:02:31again
01:02:32you want to check on them
01:02:33every 12 months
01:02:34and they'll really
01:02:34thank you for it
01:02:42Pete and I
