00:00:05No skinny dipping, right?
00:00:09It's our first day back at work,
00:00:11so we thought that we would come to the beach
00:00:13to celebrate the return of better homes and gardens.
00:00:16Many of us have enjoyed some beautiful relaxing time off
00:00:19over the summer holiday,
00:00:20but meanwhile there have been thousands of volunteers
00:00:23who have dedicated their summer to keeping us safe.
00:00:26So we thought the best way to kick-start a new year
00:00:28was to say thank you to the army of surf lifesavers
00:00:32all around this island nation.
00:00:41So you ready for another massive year?
00:00:44Yes!
00:00:45But don't forget...
00:00:47To slip.
00:00:48Slop.
00:00:49Slap.
00:00:49Seek some shade.
00:00:51Slide on some sunnies.
00:00:52And when at the beach, stop, look and stay alive.
00:00:55Just brilliant.
00:00:56These are just some of the many ways
00:00:57that we're going to help you this year on Better Homes and Gardens.
00:01:00Hey, Grigsy!
00:01:01Oh!
00:01:04Tonight, he's usually head chef,
00:01:07but this time Colin has a co-conspirator.
00:01:11Today I'm elevating all my recipes with a new ingredient.
00:01:14It's called a Graham.
00:01:18This stunning home on Bribie Island is sure to get more than just tongues wagging.
00:01:24I do have it on good authority that this one has gone to the dogs.
00:01:30As they say in the classics, you've got to fight for your right to make this.
00:01:35It doesn't matter if you've got no space, your place can still be the life of the party.
00:01:42Plus, why not embrace life's finer details?
00:01:45Every glass house needs a chandelier.
00:01:51Anything Yuzu can do, Clarissa can do better.
00:01:55I'm going to make a Yuzu meringue pie.
00:01:59And Dr. Harry's horsing around at Australia's biggest Stockman's competition.
00:02:05Sit back, relax and enjoy.
00:02:12Welcome to 2026.
00:02:14Couldn't think of a better place to be.
00:02:20Thinking of where we are.
00:02:21Lobster.
00:02:22Thinking of where we are.
00:02:24We're going to do a sausage.
00:02:27Rather than sausage in a bun, I'm just going to do like a smashed patty.
00:02:31You know the way burgers are trendy at the minute?
00:02:33Smashed patties.
00:02:34Very, very.
00:02:34With a little bit of a sauce of a chilli number.
00:02:38So the first thing to do, I've preheated the pot.
00:02:41So in here, I have got six bird's eye chillies chopped.
00:02:45A rather large five centimetre block of ginger, which I've grated.
00:02:50And about two cloves of garlic chopped.
00:02:53That's garlic.
00:02:54Garlic.
00:02:54You like that?
00:02:55Yeah.
00:02:56That's worse than my joke.
00:02:58So it's not garlic, it's garlic.
00:03:00And what I'm going to do is very lightly give that a quick sweat.
00:03:04So if you want to pour some olive oil into the pan.
00:03:06So just a little drizzle, just to get it moving.
00:03:09All ingredients into the pan.
00:03:11Will you smell this?
00:03:14Whoo!
00:03:16That'll clear your lungs out mate.
00:03:19It's a match made in heaven, it's like you and me.
00:03:23You're right.
00:03:23It's kicking in now.
00:03:25So if you stir that, and I'll chop some capsicums.
00:03:28I can do this.
00:03:29So four capsicums, roughly chopped.
00:03:33So we get our capsicums in.
00:03:35If you want to add the 500 mils of white wine vinegar.
00:03:40Yep.
00:03:40So what we're doing is we're adding the vinegar to the chilli, garlic and the ginger and we're forming a
00:03:44very acidic base.
00:03:46So it's full of vinegar.
00:03:47Then we're going to sweeten that up with the sugar.
00:03:49So that's where the jam starts to come into play.
00:03:52So we're going to need 800 grams of sugar.
00:03:58So stir that in.
00:04:02So that's good.
00:04:03We let that tick along.
00:04:04You can add the lime now.
00:04:05So what you do is, you just microplane the zest in.
00:04:10So once you zest it, smell that.
00:04:12Yeah.
00:04:13Yeah, it's beautiful.
00:04:14So rather than waste the actual zest, if you want to do that.
00:04:18So what's the tips to growing limes?
00:04:21Well, you can have a pee on them at night.
00:04:23Lots of fertiliser.
00:04:25And watch out for all the different bugs that come in.
00:04:27Spray them with a horticultural oil on a regular basis.
00:04:31Certainly during this time of the year and right through to the end of autumn.
00:04:35And that'll keep the bugs at bay and you'll have beautiful citrus.
00:04:38What I took away from the whole conversation was you pee on your trees at night time.
00:04:44So we'll keep the juice for when we've finished cooking the actual jam.
00:04:48So obviously to make the putty, we need the mince.
00:04:51So the pork mince, about 500-600 grams.
00:04:55So to that, I'm going to flavour the pork.
00:04:57So think of a herb that goes really well with pork.
00:04:59Sage.
00:05:00Correct.
00:05:01Give the man a prize.
00:05:02Yeah.
00:05:03So a bunch of sage, sage, pork.
00:05:05Goes really well together.
00:05:12Into our pork mince.
00:05:16A little bit of salt and pepper.
00:05:24Then I'm going to add...
00:05:26Oh, yes.
00:05:27I love capers on a whole heap of things.
00:05:30In a sandwich, but in a bun.
00:05:32Even better.
00:05:33Yeah.
00:05:34And I'm just going to chop the capers.
00:05:36So the capers are going to add that little saltiness, a little bit of acidity.
00:05:40Yeah.
00:05:41All right, roughly chopped capers into the bowl.
00:05:44Yep.
00:05:45So what I'm going to do is I'm going to mix that.
00:05:47But if you want to fry some garlic, which is here.
00:05:51Oh, yeah.
00:05:51I've pre-chopped a few because I'm helping you out today.
00:05:53Yeah, cool, man. Thank you.
00:05:54So you're just going to fry it on the edge of the barbecue.
00:05:57You don't want not too much colour because we're going to add the garlic to the mix.
00:06:01Oh, okay.
00:06:04I'll just pick out the black bits.
00:06:06I'll do the mixing bit.
00:06:08So basically incorporate all our ingredients.
00:06:15This has been on all that time where we've been prepping.
00:06:19So have a look at the consistency of that now.
00:06:22Oh, yeah.
00:06:22It's reduced by half and it's got really jammy.
00:06:25I'll just have a little...
00:06:27Good.
00:06:28Concentrate in flavour.
00:06:29So I think all it needs now is a little blast of lime juice.
00:06:32So if you want to cut the limes in half there.
00:06:35And we'll add the lime juice to the mix.
00:06:38When it gets reduced down.
00:06:39Yeah.
00:06:40It loses some of that heat, doesn't it?
00:06:41Oh, a little bit.
00:06:42A little bit?
00:06:43Oh, not a lot. Okay.
00:06:45Let's get on to our patties.
00:06:47So what I'm thinking is,
00:06:49onions obviously go really well with that piece of meat.
00:06:52So what I'm going to do is put them on the grill,
00:06:54smash the burger on top of it,
00:06:55so it sort of indents into the meat.
00:06:57Beautiful. Okay.
00:07:00Sort of cover it.
00:07:04And what I'm going to do now is get the burger,
00:07:07start smashing them on.
00:07:09I'll add a little bit of paper.
00:07:16Like that?
00:07:18Yes.
00:07:23That's just oven paper, is it?
00:07:25Yeah, just a non-stick.
00:07:27Yep.
00:07:32Move that to there.
00:07:35Keep going on our onions.
00:07:38And these cook in seconds.
00:07:40Yeah, I can see that.
00:07:44We make a pretty good team.
00:07:46Yeah, absolutely, mate.
00:07:47So one, two, three.
00:07:52Smash.
00:07:54Because being thinner,
00:07:55they're going to cook really quickly, aren't they?
00:07:56See the way it starts to colour right at the edge?
00:07:59I can see that.
00:08:00That's time to turn it.
00:08:01Okay.
00:08:02So the onions are not overly cooked.
00:08:07Still a little bit crisp and crunchy.
00:08:08That's it.
00:08:11So that's how simple it is.
00:08:12How many did we get?
00:08:1310, 12 burgers.
00:08:14Two minutes.
00:08:15Right, we'll get them off,
00:08:16rest them in a tray.
00:08:18Keep them warm.
00:08:21I think that's us nearly done.
00:08:22Hey, cackleberries, mate.
00:08:23The eggs.
00:08:25Eggs.
00:08:26I said nearly done.
00:08:28Didn't say done.
00:08:28Yeah.
00:08:30What's your take on beetroot on a burger?
00:08:33Ah, no, I'm definitely for beetroot.
00:08:35Yeah.
00:08:35Yeah.
00:08:36Same.
00:08:39Need a little bit of freshness.
00:08:41So if you want to grab that iceberg lettuce,
00:08:42a little bit of parsley in there.
00:08:44Yep.
00:08:44A little splash of mayonnaise,
00:08:46just to moisten it up.
00:08:48So I've got some brioche buns,
00:08:49any buns you want.
00:08:50Milk buns, brioche buns,
00:08:52bread buns.
00:08:53I'm just going to gently warm these.
00:09:03All right, so these are just softened up a little bit.
00:09:06And now it's basically just time to build.
00:09:13Well rested.
00:09:16You can see the way the onion, like it's not overly cooked.
00:09:18Yeah.
00:09:19Some's cooked, some's a little bit caramelised,
00:09:20bit of texture.
00:09:21Crunchy.
00:09:22You wanted the sunny side up egg.
00:09:24I'm on the, uh,
00:09:25a little bit,
00:09:26a little bit of the chilli jam.
00:09:28So this is going to be messy.
00:09:31Look at that.
00:09:32It's like a little sunshine.
00:09:34Look at the colour.
00:09:37Crown it off.
00:09:40I'll present you with that one.
00:09:43Oh, that is awesome.
00:09:44What do you reckon to that, Graeme?
00:09:46That, that, that is like a picture.
00:09:48So we've elevated the humble sausage in a bun to a smashed sausage patty with a chilli jam,
00:09:55egg and salad.
00:09:56Brilliant.
00:09:56Oh, you've got to cheers.
00:09:57Cheers, mate.
00:09:58Mm-mm.
00:10:02How good is that?
00:10:04Wear your old gear,
00:10:05because it's going to go everywhere.
00:10:07What he said.
00:10:13Well, this is one way to arrive at a home that feels more like a five-star resort that could
00:10:17be yours.
00:10:19Well, I tell you what,
00:10:20one of the highlights of the whole weekend you're looking at right now.
00:10:24This is the billy gun race.
00:10:25Go, go, go.
00:10:26Look at them, they're rounding up the...
00:10:31So much better.
00:10:34Now, I know I'm supposed to be meeting Adam here for some projects today,
00:10:37but I don't know what we could be doing.
00:10:38Maybe it's building a surf rack,
00:10:40or perhaps potting up some salt-tolerant plants, or...
00:10:43Or maybe it's to see who's the best board paddler.
00:10:48Why do they let you make these decisions?
00:10:50Well, that's simple, Charlie.
00:10:51You say I've been here longer than you.
00:10:53Come on, plant boy.
00:10:54It's time to get those green thumbs wet, mate.
00:10:57If I'm plant boy, are you splinter?
00:10:58Because you'd get under people's skin.
00:11:00I'll tell you what, I can't wait for this.
00:11:02I have been training all summer.
00:11:03Come on, get your kit on.
00:11:05You'll look as good as me.
00:11:06Do you pick these colours?
00:11:07Yeah.
00:11:08Looking fresh.
00:11:21You are looking good, my friend.
00:11:23Ready to compete.
00:11:24Come on, grab your board.
00:11:25Let's go.
00:11:26How do you feel?
00:11:27I'm not particularly happy with you, Adam.
00:11:28No, you don't look happy at all.
00:11:30No, you don't look happy at all.
00:11:30Come on, get excited.
00:11:32Do you carry one of these things?
00:11:32You've got to get excited.
00:11:33Yahoo!
00:11:41Hi, Charlie.
00:11:42I want you to meet Taylor.
00:11:43Hi, Charlie.
00:11:44She's going to be running through some tips and, you know, all the safety on using these boards.
00:11:48Okay.
00:11:49It's really important I stay on this board because sharks like my moonlight tan, so I cannot fall in the
00:11:54water.
00:11:55Okay.
00:11:55Have you been doing this for a while?
00:11:57Yes, I've been doing it for about ten years.
00:11:58We're in safe hands.
00:11:59All right, where does it all begin?
00:12:00All right, so basically you want to start, when you get on your board, you want to be like in
00:12:04the middle of the board.
00:12:05Yep.
00:12:05You don't want to be too far forward because otherwise the nose will go in the water and you'll probably
00:12:09nosedive.
00:12:09Yep.
00:12:10And if you're too far back, it's like harder to paddle and the nose will come up too much.
00:12:14Okay.
00:12:14And then with your strokes, make sure you've got like long, smooth strokes one at a time.
00:12:19Make sure at the very end, don't flick your wrist.
00:12:22Oh, right.
00:12:22Like no flicking water at the end.
00:12:23Okay.
00:12:24All right.
00:12:24Is that the technique?
00:12:26Like this.
00:12:27Oh, okay.
00:12:28Yeah, like that.
00:12:29This reminds you of a dancing show.
00:12:32I don't know.
00:12:32I didn't do too well in that.
00:12:33I don't think you did either.
00:12:34Mate, you did better than I did, that's for sure.
00:12:38Yeah, we're going to be all right, Charles.
00:12:39You got it.
00:12:39They look perfect.
00:12:40Great.
00:12:40Awesome.
00:12:40You guys ready for a challenge?
00:12:42Sure.
00:12:43Yeah.
00:12:43Yeah.
00:12:43I don't know.
00:12:44We're ready, but we'll give it a go.
00:12:45Okay.
00:12:46This challenge, how hard's it going to be?
00:12:48Not too hard.
00:12:51You two blokes heading for a board race.
00:12:53What could possibly go wrong?
00:12:55Like Taylor, I'm a fully qualified surf lifesaver, so I want you just to relax.
00:12:59Standing by, Taylor.
00:13:00Keep your eyes open.
00:13:01I certainly feel safer now.
00:13:02I'm glad you do.
00:13:04With Mike Taylor.
00:13:05You guys look hot.
00:13:08Oh!
00:13:09Can we turn the heat off?
00:13:14Okay, let's get on the boards.
00:13:15Okay.
00:13:15No, no, no, no.
00:13:16That's cool.
00:13:18Hello.
00:13:19Are you guys ready for a race?
00:13:21A race?
00:13:22A race?
00:13:23You've got to hit start, Charlie.
00:13:24Okay, all right.
00:13:24Are you ready?
00:13:25Companion is ready.
00:13:27Yes.
00:13:27Place the water.
00:13:28Go!
00:13:35I call you judge, buddy.
00:13:37I call you judge.
00:13:37I shall not lose.
00:13:39That's unfair.
00:13:40I will not lose.
00:13:42You've been practicing.
00:13:44Landscapers all the way.
00:13:46Silly builders.
00:13:47They've got nothing on me.
00:13:49He's got nothing on me.
00:13:52Winner!
00:13:53I call that a draw.
00:13:57Do you?
00:13:57It's definitely a draw.
00:13:59You've got a head start.
00:14:00It's all in my shoulders.
00:14:01That was ridiculous, mate.
00:14:03It's all in my shoulders.
00:14:04You were doing five strokes to my one.
00:14:06Yeah, I know.
00:14:07I'm a legend.
00:14:24Boy, don't I love horse events.
00:14:26So, welcome to what is King of the Rangers.
00:14:29It's a competition all about horsemanship and great Australian cars.
00:14:35That's why everybody comes, and that's why I'm here, and don't you miss a minute of it.
00:14:39Let your horses run my way.
00:14:42That's all tonight.
00:14:44That's a great bird to get.
00:14:50This is where it all happens.
00:14:52The showgrounds at Marirundi.
00:14:54In the upper 100 of New South Wales.
00:14:56It's nestled in the foothills of what are the mountain ranges behind.
00:15:01It's a fabulous little township.
00:15:03Churches, pubs, some wonderful old buildings.
00:15:05Normal population, only about 900 people.
00:15:08But come showtime, it swells to well over 5,000.
00:15:12And what brings them here?
00:15:14Horses.
00:15:15Horses.
00:15:16And even more horses.
00:15:18It's what this place is all about.
00:15:32This is classic, isn't it?
00:15:33This is the cross-country event.
00:15:36And it's having quite a big area right out the back of the showground and part way up the hill
00:15:41up there.
00:15:41Basic quality riding on Australian horses with Australian stock men and women.
00:15:48And a lot of the youngsters too.
00:15:51Boy, can some of them ride.
00:15:52That's what it's all about.
00:15:54Dinky, die, Aussie, bush skills, bushcraft and horsemanship.
00:15:59Makes me feel proud.
00:16:02Still here.
00:16:09Rob, you're in charge of Paxo.
00:16:10Correct.
00:16:11One of the oldest events and one of the most necessary events for a stockman, right?
00:16:15Yes.
00:16:15I reckon it's a great event.
00:16:17It's a traditional event.
00:16:19We're trying to keep our heritage going.
00:16:21It's about a four-day pack for a stockman or a boundary fence rider for him to go out.
00:16:26He's got his shoeing gear.
00:16:27He's got his traps if you need something to catch to eat.
00:16:31Yeah.
00:16:31And he's got his horse feed and he's got his little bed roll and he's awake.
00:16:35And it's not just the blokes either.
00:16:37Rebecca has 16 minutes to pack, run the course, then unpack.
00:16:42If I could buy a house on memory lane.
00:16:46So as she's coming up to those tyres, she's got to stand in between the two big tractor tyres.
00:16:50Yeah.
00:16:51Then she has to send her horse around 360 degrees going over each tyre without her riding horse moving.
00:16:57It's very unnatural, but it's showing what your horse can do.
00:17:01And they're coming up to this ramp, yeah.
00:17:02Okay, this ramp, it's replicating hollow ground.
00:17:08You've got to square him up.
00:17:09She'll go back, she'll start again.
00:17:10Her riding horse is wanting to go off the hollow ground, but she's holding him back.
00:17:22And then straight over to here.
00:17:23Good effort.
00:17:26How do you think you went?
00:17:27I think I did all right.
00:17:29I'm pretty puffed, but I got there.
00:17:30Got it done.
00:17:31I think you did absolutely well.
00:17:33You really did.
00:17:34Thanks.
00:17:34And lining him up for coming over that little apex over there, that's really hard.
00:17:40Yeah, that was tricky.
00:17:41And he didn't want to go over the log road down the back.
00:17:43No, I got a bit of rope burn, but that's all right.
00:17:45Show me.
00:17:47Missing a few fingerprints there, maybe it'll be all right.
00:17:49A bit of skin balm should be right.
00:17:51Well done.
00:17:52You love this, don't you?
00:17:53I do.
00:17:54You live locally?
00:17:55No, we're from Ballarat down in Victoria.
00:17:57Ballarat in Victoria?
00:17:58Yep.
00:17:59That was from gold mining to coal mining.
00:18:01Yep, pretty much.
00:18:02Congratulations on the great effort.
00:18:04Thank you, Dr Harry.
00:18:16So, this is the stock whip competition.
00:18:18So, what's involved?
00:18:20Well, any stockman uses the stock whip all the time.
00:18:23What's he use it for?
00:18:24Two things.
00:18:25One, the cracker at the end of the whip actually makes this sound.
00:18:28And it's the sound that helps control the animals he's working, usually cattle.
00:18:35So, it's all about using the stock whip properly while you're still riding the horse.
00:18:39This competition, there's all little obstacles all around the arena.
00:18:43You get points from everyone, you cut, and it's all about time as well.
00:18:52And that's a great round.
00:19:01And here at the Rundle this weekend, we are celebrating the Australian stockmen and the stock women.
00:19:17Dave, Harry Cooper.
00:19:19Dave Mitchell.
00:19:19Pleased to meet you, Harry.
00:19:20Good to meet you.
00:19:21You're a quietly spoken young man.
00:19:23You've been very successful here at this event, haven't you?
00:19:26I have, yes.
00:19:27How many times have you won it?
00:19:28Three times here.
00:19:29Listen, I saw a little bit of you riding bareback.
00:19:32Not easy.
00:19:32Tell me I'm right.
00:19:34That a lot of kids should learn to ride bareback because that's how you get your balance.
00:19:38Absolutely.
00:19:39Absolutely.
00:19:40The standard and the kids coming through, they just want it.
00:19:43And, like, the level of horsemanship's just gone through the roof.
00:19:46So, to win one of these things, you've really got to come along.
00:19:49Hopefully, in time, they keep coming back.
00:19:52Thanks, mate.
00:19:53Pleasure.
00:19:54I hope they keep coming back too.
00:19:56Good on you.
00:20:10Well, I tell you what, one of the highlights of the whole weekend you're looking at right
00:20:13now.
00:20:14This is the Billy Goat Race.
00:20:16Yeah, I know.
00:20:24I'm too good.
00:20:26I'm too good.
00:20:26I'm too good.
00:20:26I'm too good.
00:20:26Here we go.
00:20:26Here we go.
00:20:27Dream what I'm dreaming.
00:20:30There's something for everyone here.
00:20:32And the kids are having an absolute call.
00:20:36I think the game is winning at the moment.
00:20:39Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
00:20:51Well, hey, what's that?
00:20:52If you're into horses, you've got to be full right up to the brim by now.
00:20:56Fantastic action and a lot of real skill shown.
00:20:59But wait, we've got a whole lot more next week.
00:21:02So be sure you're watching again when we get to actually crown the king of the rangers.
00:21:09We'll be watching next Friday and we'll all find out.
00:21:16Oh my goodness, Kendall, this home is so stunning.
00:21:19It's spectacular.
00:21:20I'm a little bit distracted by what's going on behind you.
00:21:24Simple materials, straightforward build, but the result?
00:21:28Well, they'll get a party started at your place.

00:22:16Like so many Australians, I am a surf lifesaver.
00:22:19In fact, I was a lifeguard for many years at Bondi.
00:22:22But Tilly, can I tell you, my journey started like these guys
00:22:25as volunteer nippers, and this is your next generation.
00:22:28They are.
00:22:29They're the next generation of our surf club.
00:22:30They're the best ones here, if you ask me.
00:22:32Oh, really?
00:22:32I've got my North Bondi cap here.
00:22:34Who wants to wear a North Bondi cap?
00:22:35Huh?
00:22:36There you go.
00:22:37It's a pretty special one, that one.
00:22:39Whoever wins can have my North Bondi cap.
00:22:40Heads down.
00:22:41Let's go.
00:22:42You ready?
00:22:42Heads up.
00:22:44Heads down.
00:22:45Go!
00:22:45Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
00:22:47Got to be close.
00:22:49Yeah.
00:22:51Oh, they're great, aren't they?
00:22:52I can't pick it.
00:22:54Who you got there, Tilly?
00:22:56I couldn't tell.
00:22:57I couldn't tell.
00:22:58You're an age manager, which is another word for saying you look after the young nippers.
00:23:02Why is it important to get kids involved early, do you think?
00:23:05Well, I think for many reasons.
00:23:06I think one of your main reasons why it's so important is so they know about beach safety,
00:23:11where to go when you come to the beach, to look out for signs such as rips and currents,
00:23:14and just to grow that confidence in the water.
00:23:17And what about the fun?
00:23:18Oh, well, we have heaps of that here at Monavow.
00:23:20We do boards, we do flags, and then also just making friends as you go.
00:23:24I think that's one of the most fun parts about nippers, and everyone should do it.
00:23:28It's not only competition, it's family and community, isn't it?
00:23:32100%.
00:23:32They are your basis of your surf lifesaving community, and it's just a great time.
00:23:37Who got it?
00:23:38I reckon it was Evie.
00:23:39Evie, come on here.
00:23:40Come on, turn around.
00:23:41Right on.
00:23:42Congratulations.
00:23:43You get to win my North Bondi cap.
00:23:45But just remember, you're a moan of our girly.
00:23:47What about a round of applause?
00:23:49Well done.
00:24:00This segment is brought to you by Marta Price Home.
00:24:04Could the next winner be you?
00:24:07Whoa!
00:24:14A trip to Bribey Island, just north of Brisbane, could be done by car.
00:24:18But when you've got your own private skipper and outboard boat, as if I was ever going
00:24:23to take any other option apart from this.
00:24:25Now whilst I'm loving the private guided tour, I'm actually here to see the latest Marta Price
00:24:30Home and discover what it has in store.
00:24:32Although I do have it on good authority that this one has gone to the dogs.
00:24:48Oh, there's a familiar face.
00:24:50Hello.
00:24:50Hello.
00:24:51Hello.
00:24:52How are you?
00:24:53It's so good to see you.
00:24:54It's been a while since I'm working at Seven as a journo in the newsroom.
00:24:57Yes.
00:24:57Having said that, you are literally like the busiest woman in the world up here.
00:25:01For years, Kendall was one of the faces of Seven News in Queensland.
00:25:05So up and running.
00:25:05Now the mum of two has a new role as a Marta Homes Ambassador.
00:25:10I can see why you like this gig, being a Marta Price Home Ambassador.
00:25:13No surprises, getting to hang out in beautiful homes and hang out with people like you.
00:25:17Oh, honestly, you won't get rid of me at this rate.
00:25:19I can't get over that 20 metre frontage.
00:25:20It's pretty special, isn't it?
00:25:22Taking in all of that waterway plus the pool.
00:25:25Plus this.
00:25:26I've never actually been in a home that has a teppanyaki plate.
00:25:28This is one of my favourite parts because it flows out from the kitchen.
00:25:32For having friends over, this would be pretty special.
00:25:34Oh, honestly, I could just live in this part of the home.
00:25:36Yes, I agree.
00:25:37Having said that, I do want to have a look inside.
00:25:39I want you to have a look inside.
00:25:40Get in there.
00:25:41I've got some guests, special friends coming for you to see shortly.
00:25:44That's what we call a tease in the biz.
00:26:00Not surprisingly, the first room that I have come to check out is the kitchen.
00:26:03I love being in the kitchen.
00:26:05I love cooking and entertaining.
00:26:06And this is pretty much entertainer's paradise.
00:26:17We have seen some seriously impressive primary suites in Mata-Prize homes and this one definitely
00:26:23fits the bill.
00:26:34And then what about this walk-in robe?
00:26:37If I'm being really honest, this is actually bigger than my bedroom at home.
00:26:47How do you actually say that you're living in a home that is full of just complete luxury
00:26:52without saying the words out loud?
00:26:54Well, I would suggest it would be sitting in a room like this, enjoying a movie, surround
00:26:59sound, a 90-inch projection screen.
00:27:02Looking about that night, halfway to heaven, really lost my life, lost, but I found it
00:27:09My goodness, Kendall, this home is so stunning.
00:27:12It's spectacular.
00:27:13I'm a little bit distracted by what's going on behind you.
00:27:15Yes, Jo, because we know that Mata-Prize home helps fund vital medical research, patient
00:27:20care and equipment, but this is another program that we support, our Mata Pet Therapy Program.
00:27:26So I've brought Lynn, Kat and Gina here to introduce you to some special friends.
00:27:30So tell me why you guys actually got involved with the pet therapy program.
00:27:34So this is Tilly.
00:27:35She's turning seven in a couple of weeks' time and she's been at the Mata Hospital for four
00:27:40and a half years now.
00:27:42So she started just when she was about two.
00:27:44It's a source of joy for us as humans, but I think as the dogs, they really enjoy it as
00:27:49well.
00:27:49This is Hunter.
00:27:50He's my border collie.
00:27:52He'll be three in January and we started in June.
00:27:55I guess my journey with Mata goes back to when my daughter was diagnosed.
00:27:59I was a newly single mum and found out she had a rare condition.
00:28:03She had the rarest form of it, which would require surgery at the Mata.
00:28:06We weren't living in Brisbane at the time, but yeah, it involved basically having her skull
00:28:11removed and replaced and it was just something that was the most daunting thing to be going
00:28:16through by myself as well.
00:28:19But knowing that I was going through it with the Mata, it's a hospital that doesn't just
00:28:23treat you.
00:28:23It actually takes genuine care of you.
00:28:25And she was just this tiny baby, completely covered in tubes.
00:28:28And there was one patch of skin I was able to touch and just said to her, stay, Danny,
00:28:32I need you.
00:28:33And she had to go after the CT scan and I just had to hope she would come back.
00:28:38And she did.
00:28:38The Mata literally saved my daughter's life.
00:28:41Do you think the dogs themselves know as well?
00:28:42Oh, 100%.
00:28:43She picks up on people.
00:28:46She will know which ones want to see her, which don't, which ones need more love.
00:28:51She can reach the ones that can't reach her.
00:28:53She'll always get a little bit closer.
00:28:55She backs into people so that they can reach her just right.
00:28:58It's just amazing.
00:29:01Well, Kendall, this has been such a special day to see where some of the funds raised
00:29:05from this Mata Prize home are actually going to.
00:29:07But can you remind me again exactly what you get for a $2 ticket?
00:29:10Well, Jo, not only do you get the fully furnished four-bedroom home,
00:29:14which you've had a look around, you've been out on the boat,
00:29:17the Cobalt R4 outboard boat, incredible.
00:29:20You get a Toyota Land Cruiser GR Sport, perfect for taking on the beach nearby.
00:29:25And there's also a BMW 330i sedan.
00:29:29So what, you actually get to choose the car to suit the lifestyle
00:29:31that you want on a particular day?
00:29:33Absolutely.
00:29:33And to go with that, there's also $1 million in gold bullion.
00:29:38And you met some of our amazing dogs, part of the Mata Pet Therapy Program.
00:29:42And that's the kind of amazing work that the Mata Prize home is able to fund.
00:29:46Honestly, that was such a thrill today.
00:29:48And to hear the stories of the three incredible owners, I just, I loved it.
00:29:53It really is amazing.
00:29:55Your ticket to paradise can also change so many lives.
00:29:58Love it.
00:29:58Love today for lots of reasons, including catching up with you.
00:30:00You too.
00:30:05This segment was brought to you by Mata Prize Home.
00:30:08Buy tickets today to also be in the draw to win an extra 5K in gold bullion.
00:30:15Coming up, Adams discovered the quickest way to win friends and influence people.
00:30:21I'm going to build a drinks cabinet and an entertaining hub
00:30:24which will make this little balcony the hottest spot in town.
00:30:29This dessert tastes amazing.
00:30:31No matter how you slice it,
00:30:33this is a pretty good-looking piece of pie.
00:30:39And who says being used and worn is a bad thing?
00:30:43Beauty does not have to be brand new.
00:30:51We are so lucky in Australia.
00:30:53We've got some of the best beaches in the world.
00:30:56But who keeps us safe in the water?
00:30:58Our lifeguards and our lifesavers.
00:31:00And today, they're using modern technology.
00:31:07James, good to meet you, mate.
00:31:11Lovely to see you, Dr Harry.
00:31:12Welcome to Sunny Monerville Beach.
00:31:13Now, if I'm not wrong, this is a drone, right?
00:31:16This is a drone.
00:31:16It's a UAV or an uncrewed aerial vehicle.
00:31:19Wow, that's a mouthful, isn't it?
00:31:21So what do you do with this?
00:31:22In particular at Surf Life Savvy New South Wales,
00:31:24we use it to patrol off the break of the waves
00:31:26for marine wildlife out there.
00:31:28OK, so I guess the main thing is looking for sharks
00:31:30and things like that, is it?
00:31:31That is the core of what we do, yes.
00:31:33We work with New South Wales government
00:31:34and they fund a program across the whole New South Wales coastline
00:31:37at 50 locations, two flights every hour, every single day,
00:31:40to patrol mainly for sharks and those target species.
00:31:43So it does a lot of other things?
00:31:44It can do a range of things.
00:31:46It's got a speaker on top there,
00:31:47so we can alert the swimmers to any particular hazards
00:31:49that are out there and it carries really well across the water.
00:31:51It can have thermal imagery, these drones, as well.
00:31:54The camera and gimbal moves around
00:31:55and you can get different levels of these drones.
00:31:57They're exceptional little tools.
00:31:59We use it for search and rescues with the New South Wales police.
00:32:01They're very good at detecting heat signatures,
00:32:03you know, for koala spotting in the wilderness as well.
00:32:06There's all sorts of things.
00:32:07There's not too many koalas going swimming though, are there?
00:32:08Not out here, no, but there's a whole lot of marine wildlife,
00:32:11that's for sure.
00:32:12There's whales and dolphins and we saw a penguin the other day,
00:32:15which was interesting.
00:32:16You're pretty excited about this, aren't you?
00:32:17I love this stuff and I could talk all day about it.
00:32:28About there.
00:32:29Then we can do a bit of a control check.
00:32:31Back and forth, making sure it's all responsive.
00:32:34Yeah.
00:32:35We'll go left and right a little bit.
00:32:37Forward and backwards.
00:32:38We'll go up higher.
00:32:42And then off we can kind of go.
00:32:44You can see at the moment we're up at about 50 metres.
00:32:46See the hawk flying out?
00:32:47Yeah.
00:32:48Just sussing out his backyard.
00:32:49Who else is up there in the airspace with him?
00:32:53What about the wind?
00:32:54You've got a lot of equipment.
00:32:55How does it handle that?
00:32:56Being on the coast, we're exposed to a lot of salt and wind
00:32:59and those kind of harsh environments.
00:33:00But these drones, to their credit, do very well to hold up.
00:33:04You can see straight down.
00:33:05We can see the board riders out there below us.
00:33:07Yeah.
00:33:08So you can see straight through that water column.
00:33:10So anything that pops up is very easy to detect.
00:33:13But as you can imagine and as you can see there,
00:33:15we see a lot of marine wildlife out there.
00:33:17It's very easy to kind of pick things up.
00:33:20What amazes me is that this tool can save lives
00:33:23in your hands at a beach in Sydney.
00:33:27Fantastic.
00:33:28What a great tool.
00:33:29And what a good operator.
00:33:34While this balcony may be little,
00:33:36it doesn't mean that Oni's party spirit matches.
00:33:39So I'm going to build a drinks cabinet
00:33:41and an entertaining hub
00:33:42which will make this little balcony
00:33:44the hottest spot in town.
00:33:46Now it all starts with me removing this clothesline
00:33:49because they don't use this area
00:33:50to dry their clothes anymore.
00:34:09The key to this drinks cabinet
00:34:11is to keep the design simple and achievable.
00:34:14Now I'm going to be using some dressed pine to make it
00:34:16and the best thing is that's easy to work with
00:34:18but also affordable.
00:34:20The first thing I'm going to be doing
00:34:21is cutting all my pieces to size.
00:34:29The size of our drinks cabinet
00:34:31is 900 high, 560 wide and 185 deep.
00:34:36But if you want the detailed plans
00:34:37and all the measurements,
00:34:39make sure you send us an email.
00:34:45Oh, so this is the overall shape of our cabinet.
00:34:48Now to hold it together,
00:34:49I'm going to be using some PVA glue
00:34:51and these 50mm screws.
00:34:53But what I will be doing
00:34:54because we're screwing into this end grain,
00:34:56I'll be pre-drilling it
00:34:57before I put the screw in
00:34:58and that's going to stop this timber from splitting.
00:35:00Spare me all the stories of how
00:35:23Now you will notice
00:35:25that this middle shelf
00:35:26is actually stepped down by 5mm
00:35:28and that's because
00:35:29I'm going to be sitting a mirror
00:35:31inside this cabinet
00:35:33which means I need to now
00:35:35continue a frame
00:35:36around this inside perimeter.
00:35:38To do that,
00:35:38I'll be using this 19x19 baton.
00:36:00With our battens on,
00:36:02the last step is simply
00:36:03to add these rails
00:36:05at the top and the bottom.
00:36:06I'll insert them inside our cabinet
00:36:08and basically that's going to help
00:36:09strengthen everything up.
00:36:28With our cabinet complete,
00:36:30it is now time to get onto the front
00:36:32and that is going to be a door.
00:36:33But this isn't just any old door.
00:36:35There's going to be a door
00:36:36that then doubles up as a bar top
00:36:38because when it's open,
00:36:39you can sit around it.
00:36:41So make it.
00:36:41I'll be using some more dress pine.
00:36:43I've got my 140x19.
00:36:45Now the first thing I'm going to do
00:36:47is take these sharp edges off
00:36:49by going around with my planer
00:36:50and arrasing the edges.
00:36:52Now if you don't have one of these,
00:36:53you can use sandpaper
00:36:54or you can use a hand planer.
00:36:57It's just going to be
00:36:58a nice design feature.
00:36:59Once all these pieces are done,
00:37:00I'll lay them out.
00:37:01I'll put two rails across
00:37:03and screw them all together.
00:37:06From your love, from your love,
00:37:08So it's turning me so
00:37:09From your love, from your love
00:37:11I'll be down the floor
00:37:13I'm here for anything more
00:37:15Baby, you took it all
00:37:18I'm going through the withdrawal
00:37:25With all our pieces prepared
00:37:27and before I bring them all together,
00:37:29I'm going to go over the outside
00:37:31of this cabinet with a charcoal stain
00:37:33and then I'll keep the inside clear.
00:37:35It's going to look fantastic.
00:37:37I don't want to go up too fast.
00:37:40They spend every day trying to get back to class.
00:37:43So I want to do dumb things for you.
00:37:47While we can still paint it on you.
00:37:51With everything dry, it's now time to turn this cabinet into a real bar.
00:37:55How are we going to do that?
00:37:56Well, we are going to be adding in the mirror.
00:37:59And remember, that's why we created this 5mm step down.
00:38:02So the mirror will sit in here, which will bring us flush with our frame.
00:38:07And then I'm going to use this plywood on top,
00:38:09which will sandwich it together and get screwed to our outside perimeter.
00:38:32And the wait is finally over.
00:38:34I know you've been sitting there trying to think,
00:38:36how are we going to make this work as a door and a bench at the same time?
00:38:39Well, it is super simple.
00:38:40I've just attached a piano hinge to our cabinet,
00:38:43and that's what's going to allow it to go up and down as a door.
00:38:46And then these two chains here,
00:38:47well, that will hold it in place when it's open like a bench.
00:39:08All right, now we're ready to fix this to the wall.
00:39:11Now, because it's a brick wall,
00:39:12I'm going to be using some masonry plugs to hold it in place.
00:39:16Hey, this might be a feature,
00:39:18oh, really?
00:39:20Always.
00:39:20Aweshey, all so yeah,
00:39:21oh, makrifat,
00:39:21aweshey, ah,
00:39:23my stick,
00:39:24aweshey, yeah.
00:39:25And you're falling back,
00:39:28you're always,
00:39:29oh, so,
00:39:30ps4,
00:39:31aweshey.
00:39:33Aweshey, avashey.
00:39:35Again, drawing,
00:39:36and you're gonna be the place.
00:39:38Oh, please,
00:39:39aweshey.
00:39:40Offare.
00:39:41Aweshey, yeah.
00:39:43Aweshey, avashey, yeah.
00:39:46And I've just added some finishing touches.
00:39:48I put a hook on this side, great place to hang a towel
00:39:50and a bottle opener on the other side.
00:39:53But I tell you what, there is a lot to love about this build,
00:39:56whether the door's shut and it's tucked away
00:39:59or it's opened up like this, ready for entertaining.
00:40:01I mean, we use basic building materials,
00:40:04simple carpentry skills, no crazy tools needed,
00:40:07and it looks absolutely stunning.
00:40:11The end result speaks for itself,
00:40:12and there's only one thing left for me to do,
00:40:14and that's to enjoy a refreshing beverage.
00:40:17Cheers.
00:40:19When my heart is beating, do you feel it too?
00:40:28Oh, you can touch the ceiling.
00:40:34How about a yuzu meringue pie?
00:40:38It is absolutely delicious.

00:41:09A dash of red and yellow has become an iconic part
00:41:13of life on the beach in Australia over summer.
00:41:15And with 200,000 members around the country,
00:41:19Surf Life Saving is the largest volunteer community
00:41:22of its kind in the world.
00:41:23So we've gathered at the stunning Moan of Our Surf Life Saving Club
00:41:27on Sydney's northern beaches
00:41:28to meet some of those volunteers.
00:41:32So here he is.
00:41:33Hello, Ollie.
00:41:33I've been told that you're the man to speak to you
00:41:36about everything to do with this club and surf life saving.
00:41:38Oh, I guess so.
00:41:39Well, you've been a member here for a long time, haven't you?
00:41:41I have.
00:41:41I've been here for 15 years or so,
00:41:43so I started out as a little nipper on the beach
00:41:45and now I'm a patrol captain on the beach.
00:41:47Tell me what it is that you actually love
00:41:49about volunteering for Surf Life Saving.
00:41:51I think what I love is the community.
00:41:53It's like I get to come down to the beach
00:41:54and I have so many different mates from a variety of backgrounds.
00:41:57It's not your schoolmates you grew up with,
00:41:58it's people that are all walks of life from all over Sydney.
00:42:01There is a serious side to what you have to do, though, as well.
00:42:04There's a lot of training that goes on behind the scenes
00:42:05that people don't realise as well
00:42:07and lots of retraining.
00:42:08You've got to keep it fresh, don't you?
00:42:09100%.
00:42:09So annually, we all have to do our annual proficiency
00:42:12in skills maintenance.
00:42:13So I did mine about a month ago
00:42:14and then three days later, I helped with the CPR
00:42:16and a member of the public in Newport.
00:42:18So it's really valuable.
00:42:25You actually get out and about
00:42:26into the community a fair bit as well?
00:42:28100%, yeah.
00:42:29So, yeah, through our work,
00:42:31I get to go out and chat to people,
00:42:33members of the public.
00:42:34We're trying to educate them
00:42:35and talk about where it's safe to be on the beach.
00:42:37So a really big one we've been pushing
00:42:39is stop, look and stay alive.
00:42:41So stop before you go on the water,
00:42:43look and see if the conditions around you are safe.
00:42:45So seeing if there's rips or other hazards
00:42:47and looking for the red and yellow flags
00:42:49and then staying alive.
00:42:50So going in only if you feel comfortable
00:42:53to go into the ocean.
00:42:54Like today is a perfect day to go on the water.
00:42:56So if there are ways that people want to get involved,
00:42:58what would you suggest for them?
00:42:59I mean, obviously they can volunteer.
00:43:00100%.
00:43:01And I think that's the beauty of Surf Lifesaving.
00:43:03There's so many different ways now.
00:43:04So if you're not comfortable in the water,
00:43:05you could be going and flying drones from the beach.
00:43:08And you can always donate money.
00:43:09I mean, that's another way to actually support it
00:43:11is fully volunteer.
00:43:12We always appreciate it.
00:43:13It's what funds us and keeps us buying boards like this,
00:43:15keeping our flags up on the beach.
00:43:17Ollie, I love the passion.
00:43:18You were definitely the right person to chat to me.
00:43:28When I heard that the team was gathering at the beach
00:43:31for a picnic,
00:43:32I decided I want to make a meringue pie.
00:43:35Now, not just your lemon or lime meringue pie.
00:43:39I'm going to make a yuzu meringue pie.
00:43:46It all starts off with a biscuit base.
00:43:48Here, I've got 250 grams of digestive biscuits,
00:43:52which I have processed in a food processor
00:43:56to a sen-like consistency.
00:44:00With that, 100 grams of melted butter.
00:44:06If you're using salted butter,
00:44:09you just use less salt.
00:44:11But if you're using unsalted butter,
00:44:13I would definitely suggest a good pinch of salt.
00:44:22Mix it till it all combines together
00:44:25and until you get a wet sort of paste.
00:44:32Okay.
00:44:33And in it goes to a removable base tart tin.
00:44:41Once you get it all evenly distributed,
00:44:45using a bottom of a glass
00:44:48and pressing it to compact it as much as you can.
00:44:54Step one, three ingredients tick.
00:45:06So I'm going to separate six egg yolks from the egg whites.
00:45:10I use the egg yolks for the filling
00:45:13and I use the egg whites for the meringue.
00:45:16So nothing here gets wasted.
00:45:32150 mils of yuzu.
00:45:36It comes usually from China or Japan.
00:45:40It tastes in between lime and a lemon
00:45:44but it does have a very floral smell to this.
00:45:49It smells almost that you can drink it
00:45:53but it's very, very tart.
00:45:56Give it a bit of a whisk.
00:46:02We're using one and a half cans of condensed milk.
00:46:06Tiny bit more.
00:46:09Okay, that looks like half a can.
00:46:11So that's the consistency of the filling.
00:46:14That's all you need.
00:46:16So all we have to do now is
00:46:19pour the filling on top of the base.
00:46:22Pre-heat your oven at 180
00:46:27and it goes in for about 15 to 20 minutes
00:46:31or until it's set.
00:46:39Now while that's cooking in the oven,
00:46:42we're going to start off with our meringue.
00:46:45The six egg whites into a stand mixer.
00:46:54Let it beat
00:46:56till it becomes a little bit frothy.
00:47:04And here is when I want to add
00:47:06the cream of tartar.
00:47:15Okay, now it's time to add
00:47:18150 grams of sugar.
00:47:21A little bit at a time.
00:47:34I'm going to check
00:47:35to see if the sugar has dissolved.
00:47:38And how you check it is
00:47:39there's no grittiness
00:47:40between your fingers.
00:47:42The sugar's dissolved.
00:47:43And that's perfect.
00:47:47The pie has been cooked
00:47:49and I let it cool down completely.
00:47:52The next part is the fun part.
00:47:55Putting the meringue on the pie.
00:47:58Can make it look a bit rustic.
00:48:02Just slap it on like that
00:48:04and then sort of make swirls
00:48:07so you get a bit of height.
00:48:10How's that?
00:48:11Doesn't that look impressive as it is?
00:48:14Now you can serve it like this
00:48:16or you can zhoosh it up
00:48:18and make it a little bit more impressive.
00:48:21You can use your oven.
00:48:23Heat up the grill at 220 to 230.
00:48:26Put your pie tin as high as you can
00:48:30but not touching the grill.
00:48:32Put it in for 30 seconds
00:48:34and that should brown the top
00:48:36of your meringue.
00:48:37But I have got today
00:48:41a blowtorch.
00:48:45Wow.
00:48:46I am really proud of myself
00:48:48with this one.
00:48:49For someone who doesn't
00:48:50really like sweets
00:48:51this is a pretty good looking
00:48:54piece of pie.
00:48:58Come with me as we wander
00:49:00through this garden
00:49:01where old meets new
00:49:02and nature meets design.
00:49:04I have a great idea
00:49:06for those indoor plants
00:49:07you have just hanging around.

00:49:42right now
00:49:42for a whole world
00:49:44of cooking to explore.
00:49:51I'm about to take you
00:49:52into a garden
00:49:53that is both timeless
00:49:54and fresh.
00:49:56It embraces
00:49:57sustainability
00:49:57and creativity
00:49:58and it goes to show
00:49:59beauty does not have
00:50:00to be brand new.
00:50:06I'm immediately drawn
00:50:08into the garden
00:50:09by this amazing
00:50:10aged olive tree
00:50:11in this raised bed.
00:50:12It's got such an amazing
00:50:14structural form to it
00:50:15which really pulls you in
00:50:16and off the circular pattern
00:50:18well there's all these
00:50:19different garden rooms
00:50:20but I have to say
00:50:20as you enter the garden
00:50:22it's just such a wonderful experience.
00:50:24You've got water houses
00:50:25which close you in
00:50:26with this fantastic archway
00:50:27with Boston ivy going over
00:50:29which is going to give
00:50:29great autumn colour
00:50:30but it's the level of detail
00:50:32that really sets the tone.
00:50:33Take this step for example.
00:50:35You could have easily
00:50:35just had recycled bricks
00:50:37but instead
00:50:37there's a recycled sleeper here
00:50:39and the way it's been cut
00:50:41into this metal work
00:50:41is absolutely divine.
00:50:43I cannot wait
00:50:44to check out
00:50:44the rest of this space.
00:50:52The garden is split
00:50:53into various garden rooms
00:50:55each one with a distinct purpose
00:50:56and this one
00:50:57is all about cut flowers.
00:50:59The planting scheme
00:51:00for the remainder of the garden
00:51:01is predominantly native
00:51:02so this space is all about
00:51:03growing things
00:51:04that might look a little bit
00:51:05out of place there
00:51:06but what the owner
00:51:07really wanted.
00:51:07Things like buddlia,
00:51:09we've got some ecchium
00:51:09and even foxgloves.
00:51:11As you walk through
00:51:12it's flanked by two acacias
00:51:13a variety called sterling silver
00:51:15which is looking
00:51:16absolutely spectacular
00:51:17but it's this fence
00:51:19that helps to pull
00:51:20the whole garden together.
00:51:21It works around the outside
00:51:22and it meanders
00:51:23through the different spaces.
00:51:24Now this is actually
00:51:25copper pipe
00:51:25which is plumbing pipe
00:51:27and hardwood timber
00:51:28each one individually drilled
00:51:29and tapped on.
00:51:31This would have taken
00:51:31absolutely ages to do
00:51:33but it's well worth the effort.
00:51:44Mitch and Josh
00:51:45how are you guys?
00:51:46How are you buddy?
00:51:47You well?
00:51:47Yeah, very good.
00:51:48Jolly good.
00:51:49So landscape designer,
00:51:50landscape builder
00:51:50and brothers as well.
00:51:52That's right.
00:51:52A combination that seems to work.
00:51:54This garden is absolutely stunning.
00:51:56How big is it?
00:51:57It's about 600 squares.
00:51:58Okay, so it's like
00:51:59a standard old garden.
00:52:01Yeah, that's right.
00:52:01Most people would normally
00:52:02have a lawn in there
00:52:03with maybe a hedge
00:52:03around the outside.
00:52:04Why have you guys
00:52:05gone for different garden rooms?
00:52:06We're trying to create a garden
00:52:07one that would create
00:52:08a sense of intrigue
00:52:09one that would kind of
00:52:10draw you to walk around
00:52:10and explore
00:52:11and then by you having
00:52:12avenue plantings
00:52:13and larger established trees
00:52:14would really block it off
00:52:15so your point of view
00:52:16you need to walk around
00:52:17and explore.
00:52:18I guess by having those rooms
00:52:19as well it makes the space
00:52:20feel larger
00:52:20because you don't see it all
00:52:21at once.
00:52:22Yeah, that's right.
00:52:22Being more of an open space
00:52:23too we're trying to make it
00:52:24feel a bit more
00:52:25intimate and private
00:52:26so by kind of closing in
00:52:28the spaces
00:52:28it creates that
00:52:30yeah, sense of safety.
00:52:31Yeah, great.
00:52:32And there's a lot of
00:52:33recycled materials
00:52:33was that difficult to build?
00:52:35It can be difficult at times
00:52:36they all have their own
00:52:38tendencies
00:52:39how they want to react
00:52:39when you cut them
00:52:40they split
00:52:41this and that
00:52:42so just like a person
00:52:44that has a bit of character
00:52:44to them
00:52:45they can be a bit hard
00:52:46to work with at first
00:52:47but once you figure them out
00:52:49it can turn into something
00:52:50a lot more beautiful
00:52:51than what was just
00:52:51manufactured
00:52:52out of something new.
00:52:53So what was the inspiration
00:52:55behind the garden?
00:52:56Because there is a lot of
00:52:57recycled materials here
00:52:57isn't there?
00:52:58The client loved like
00:52:59an inner city cafe
00:53:00and that was one of the
00:53:02big ones
00:53:03and then too
00:53:04something like the glass house
00:53:05and a fireplace
00:53:06she really wanted to
00:53:07incorporate aspects of them
00:53:08into the garden
00:53:09Okay
00:53:09Yeah
00:53:10And the planting scheme
00:53:11is mainly native
00:53:12isn't it?
00:53:13Yeah
00:53:13But it feels very contemporary
00:53:14the way it's been put together
00:53:15how have you achieved that?
00:53:17Just by having like
00:53:18a mixture of kind of wildness
00:53:20so have plants encroaching
00:53:21on the pathways
00:53:21to soften them
00:53:22but then having like
00:53:23clipped spheres
00:53:24like the western
00:53:25just kind of give it
00:53:25a bit more structure as well
00:53:27Yeah, they give a great
00:53:28formal shape, don't they?
00:53:29Fantastic
00:53:29Well, I cannot wait
00:53:31to have a little bit
00:53:32more of a look around
00:53:33I'll catch up with you guys
00:53:33a bit later on, okay?
00:53:34Very good
00:53:34All right
00:53:35Thanks
00:53:42Well, if you are after
00:53:46a destination in the garden
00:53:47you really can't beat
00:53:48a glass house like this
00:53:50I absolutely love the way
00:53:51there's no ridge beam
00:53:52so when you look up
00:53:53all you can see
00:53:54are the lovely gum trees
00:53:55It is quite a cold area
00:53:57here in winter
00:53:58so having a glass house
00:53:59like this
00:53:59is just going to extend
00:54:00the growing period
00:54:01The garden beds
00:54:02well, they're actually
00:54:02raised plastic wicking beds
00:54:04hidden behind a facade
00:54:05of recycled bricks
00:54:07so they always get the moisture
00:54:08that they need
00:54:09As you go down
00:54:10the tiles
00:54:11they're recycled
00:54:11from the owner's
00:54:12previous bathroom
00:54:13it really is spectacular
00:54:15all the timber is recycled
00:54:16the finishing touch
00:54:17well, every glass house
00:54:19needs a chandelier
00:54:29Recycled materials
00:54:30and veggie patches
00:54:31go hand in hand
00:54:32and here
00:54:33they've used the
00:54:34recycled sleepers again
00:54:35to raise the beds up
00:54:36and like the step
00:54:37that we looked at
00:54:38we've actually used
00:54:39the same metal here
00:54:40now this is the tracks
00:54:41from the railway
00:54:43and the way they've
00:54:43cut in that timber
00:54:44is absolutely delightful
00:54:46to tie all the gardens
00:54:47together though
00:54:47they've got repeat planting
00:54:48you can see these balls
00:54:49of wastringer
00:54:50like where I met the guys
00:54:51and that just makes
00:54:52the whole garden
00:54:53feel cohesive
00:55:03well guys
00:55:04you've saved the best
00:55:05till last
00:55:05this is awesome
00:55:06this little spot
00:55:07thank you Charlie
00:55:08absolutely love it
00:55:08this fireplace is great
00:55:09so there is a lot
00:55:11of detail in this garden
00:55:12like where materials
00:55:13meet up
00:55:14all those junctions
00:55:15things like
00:55:16even though
00:55:16the way the
00:55:17the lighting cables
00:55:18are hidden in a copper cable
00:55:19there
00:55:19is that done
00:55:20at the design stage
00:55:21or is it done
00:55:22at construction stage
00:55:23a bit of a blend
00:55:24sometimes
00:55:25we're big on flexibility
00:55:26as we go along
00:55:27and some things
00:55:28you'll have to adapt
00:55:29and find some creative
00:55:30solution to make it work
00:55:31how is it working
00:55:32together as brothers
00:55:33do you fight a lot
00:55:34do you
00:55:35we're normally pretty good
00:55:36you know
00:55:37I stick to design
00:55:37and Josh sticks to
00:55:38how we build
00:55:39we have an argument
00:55:40we just have a bit
00:55:40of wrestle on the grass
00:55:41and that's all set out
00:55:42pretty cool
00:55:42and the clients are right
00:55:43with you wrestling on the grass
00:55:44they get the hose
00:55:44and just hose us
00:55:45to try to calm us down
00:55:46I like it
00:55:47I like it
00:55:47and now this garden
00:55:48has won an award
00:55:49hasn't it
00:55:50yeah that's right
00:55:50best design
00:55:51up to 500 square metres
00:55:52and then also
00:55:53best emerging designer
00:55:54too nationally
00:55:54well I can say
00:55:56that they got it
00:55:56absolutely spot on
00:55:57because this garden
00:55:58is fantastic
00:55:59thank you so much
00:56:00for showing us around
00:56:00it's a great use of space
00:56:02it feels enormous
00:56:03when it's just a sort
00:56:04of standard sized block
00:56:05so congratulations
00:56:06to both of you
00:56:07and well done
00:56:08thank you Charlie
00:56:09thanks for coming out
00:56:10thank you
00:56:15coming up
00:56:16keep summer alive
00:56:17for a little longer
00:56:18those essential oils
00:56:19and flavours
00:56:20will be with you
00:56:21for months to come
00:56:23and this clever craft project
00:56:25won't tie you
00:56:26up in knots
00:56:27I think this is
00:56:28the easiest DIY project
00:56:30I've ever done
00:56:30give it a go
00:56:44the amazing thing
00:56:45about surf lifesaving
00:56:47is that their influence
00:56:48extends well beyond
00:56:49the red and yellow flags
00:56:50that's exactly right
00:56:51they offer a range
00:56:52of training programs
00:56:53aimed at raising
00:56:54awareness and safety
00:56:55right along the coast
00:56:56so Dan
00:56:56thank you for joining us
00:56:57what a stunning location
00:56:58this is
00:56:59absolutely fantastic
00:57:00place to be
00:57:01so tell me a bit
00:57:01about the range
00:57:02of programs you offer
00:57:03absolutely
00:57:04we do rock fishing programs
00:57:05we do junior first aid
00:57:07beach to bush
00:57:08mental health first aid
00:57:09but CPR and first aid
00:57:11is where we spend
00:57:11most of our time
00:57:12a lot of people
00:57:13would have done
00:57:13first aid courses before
00:57:14but what is the difference
00:57:15between a traditional
00:57:17first aid course
00:57:17and what you do
00:57:18we've just rolled out
00:57:19a national program
00:57:20to all of our volunteers
00:57:21called life-saving CPR
00:57:22really targeting
00:57:23our volunteers
00:57:24whether they're
00:57:25in Batemans Bay
00:57:25or Broome
00:57:26the response
00:57:27doesn't really change
00:57:28everyone is trained
00:57:29the same way now
00:57:30when it comes to CPR
00:57:31we want to make sure
00:57:32that the ambulance
00:57:32obviously is on the way
00:57:34making sure that
00:57:35everyone's nice and safe
00:57:35but when it comes
00:57:36to our CPR
00:57:37we find the middle
00:57:37of the chest
00:57:39arms nice and straight
00:57:40we're on a table today
00:57:41but let's get them
00:57:42on the floor
00:57:42pushing down nice and hard
00:57:44full release
00:57:45we want to make sure
00:57:45we want that heart
00:57:46to fill back up
00:57:48and it's quite fast
00:57:49isn't it
00:57:50two per second
00:57:51so we want to do
00:57:5130 compressions
00:57:52followed by our
00:57:53two rescue breaths
00:57:5526, 27, 28, 29, 30
00:57:58we tilt the head back
00:57:59grab the chin
00:58:02two quick breaths
00:58:03and then get back
00:58:04into it
00:58:04we want to maximise
00:58:06our time on the chest
00:58:07by minimising
00:58:08our time off the chest
00:58:09and would you keep
00:58:10doing this until
00:58:11the ambulance arrived?
00:58:12absolutely
00:58:12with nearly 80%
00:58:14of CPRs happening
00:58:15at home
00:58:15we want to make sure
00:58:16people are continuing
00:58:17to compress
00:58:17until those ambos
00:58:18walk in the door
00:58:19keep it simple
00:58:20call, push and shock
00:58:21that's our key message
00:58:22thanks so much Dan
00:58:23thank you for having me
00:58:24amazing work
00:58:34with the season
00:58:35really booming along
00:58:36you may find
00:58:37that you've just got
00:58:38so many herbs
00:58:39you can't use them
00:58:40quickly enough
00:58:40in the kitchen
00:58:41well
00:58:42best thing is
00:58:44grab your herbs
00:58:45tie them off
00:58:47with a bit of string
00:58:51and then
00:58:52you can keep them
00:58:53for later on
00:58:55but the trick is
00:58:56is to hang them up
00:58:57now if you hang them up
00:58:59somewhere where it's
00:59:00very dry
00:59:00the laundry is too much
00:59:02moisture
00:59:03so the garage
00:59:03or somewhere
00:59:04where it's nice and dry
00:59:05and you haven't got
00:59:06any moisture coming in
00:59:07you'll find
00:59:08the herbs will really
00:59:10last for a very
00:59:11very long time
00:59:23and of course
00:59:23you can do the same
00:59:24thing with lavender
00:59:25and lavender is so
00:59:27handy
00:59:27because you can use
00:59:28it in so many
00:59:29different ways
00:59:29and you still get
00:59:30the aromas
00:59:31right the way
00:59:31through the house
00:59:32when they're
00:59:33hanging there
00:59:33to dry
00:59:33by the way
00:59:34when you do
00:59:35go to use them
00:59:35take them down
00:59:36into the kitchen
00:59:37just let them
00:59:38acclimatise in the
00:59:39kitchen
00:59:39because there'll be
00:59:40much more moisture
00:59:40there
00:59:41and the leaves
00:59:42actually tend
00:59:43to re-energise
00:59:44themselves
00:59:44strip them off
00:59:45and put them
00:59:46into your cooking
00:59:46and those essential
00:59:48oils and flavours
00:59:49will be with you
00:59:50for months to come
00:59:54even if you don't
00:59:56consider yourself
00:59:56crafty
00:59:57I guarantee
00:59:58you can do this
01:00:00stuck in a gardening
01:00:01rut
01:00:02well this issue
01:00:02of Better Homes
01:00:03and Gardens
01:00:03magazine
01:00:04is all about
01:00:05exploration
01:00:05with lots of
01:00:06new things to try
01:00:07some plants
01:00:08are stranger
01:00:09than fiction
01:00:10take a look
01:00:10at some weird
01:00:11and wacky ones
01:00:12you'll have to
01:00:12see to believe
01:00:14are you wanting
01:00:15to move beyond
01:00:16the gardening
01:00:16basics
01:00:17find out how
01:00:18to take your
01:00:18skills to the
01:00:19next level
01:00:20and spice things
01:00:21up by growing
01:00:21colourful chillies
01:00:22with me
01:00:23then cook up
01:00:24tasty favourites
01:00:25from your harvest
01:00:26grab this month's
01:00:27magazine for a
01:00:28whole world of
01:00:29gardening inspiration
01:00:30and don't forget
01:00:31your chance
01:00:31to win a million
01:00:32dollars
01:00:36so much better
01:00:39I absolutely
01:00:40love hanging
01:00:41plants indoors
01:00:42not only do
01:00:42they purify the
01:00:43air but they
01:00:44also look so
01:00:45lush and green
01:00:46and gorgeous
01:00:46but traditional
01:00:48hanging baskets
01:00:49like this
01:00:49that usually
01:00:50go outdoors
01:00:51don't look so
01:00:51stylish inside
01:00:52the home
01:00:53so I'm going
01:00:53to show you
01:00:54how to make
01:00:54a really stylish
01:00:55version that
01:00:56won't have you
01:00:56jumping through
01:00:57hoops
01:01:02for this you'll
01:01:03need some
01:01:03embroidery hoops
01:01:04you might have
01:01:05some of these
01:01:05in your craft
01:01:06box otherwise
01:01:06you can buy
01:01:07them at the
01:01:08store
01:01:08you'll need
01:01:08two large ones
01:01:09and then one
01:01:11smaller one
01:01:11and you need it
01:01:12to fit just
01:01:14under the rim
01:01:14of your pot
01:01:15like that
01:01:16if yours is
01:01:17too big
01:01:17what you can
01:01:18do is just
01:01:19tie some
01:01:20macrame cord
01:01:21around it
01:01:21and then you'll
01:01:23find it'll
01:01:24fit snugly
01:01:26so then
01:01:27you take
01:01:27the smallest
01:01:29ring
01:01:30place it
01:01:31in the centre
01:01:31the two
01:01:32larger ones
01:01:33either side
01:01:34then take
01:01:35a couple
01:01:35of cable ties
01:01:36and where
01:01:37the rings
01:01:37meet
01:01:38you'll just
01:01:39tie those
01:01:39around
01:01:48the trick
01:01:49here is not
01:01:50to tighten
01:01:50the cable ties
01:01:51too tight
01:01:52at this point
01:01:53what you want
01:01:53to do is
01:01:53bring up
01:01:54the larger
01:01:54hoops
01:01:55on either
01:01:56side
01:01:56use another
01:01:57cable tie
01:01:57there
01:01:58and then
01:01:59you can
01:01:59tighten
01:02:00the lower
01:02:00ones
01:02:01and after
01:02:01that
01:02:02I'm going
01:02:02to conceal
01:02:02the cable ties
01:02:03with macrame
01:02:04cord
01:02:07to secure
01:02:08the macrame
01:02:09cord in place
01:02:09I'm just
01:02:10using
01:02:10a dab
01:02:11of hot glue
01:02:12on the
01:02:12underside
01:02:13here
01:02:15and then
01:02:15I'm going
01:02:16to take
01:02:16the cord
01:02:17and just
01:02:18hold it
01:02:18in place
01:02:19for a second
01:02:19until it
01:02:19starts to
01:02:20set
01:02:20and then
01:02:20I can
01:02:21start
01:02:21wrapping
01:02:21it
01:02:21around
01:02:29then
