00:00That dusty, grimy, that cinematic basement tape sound, was that intentional or was that just the
00:06gear? You know, people say hindsight is 20-20, but it was intentional. I first made hip-hop
00:11with a four-track tape at home, and all demos played throughout the hood. When the Jizzer made
00:17his demos, they played throughout the hood. When the Jizzer did his first album, it didn't sound
00:21like the demo tape. The demo tape sounded real, sounded pure. The album sounded polished,
00:26and I wanted to get away. I wanted it to sound like the demo. I wanted it to sound like
00:30hip-hop.
00:31When I got the Cold Crush Brothers tape, I wanted it to sound like the feeling that that gave me,
00:35and the equipment probably helped. That PV board is not a mixing board. It's better for live music.
00:41People was using SSLs and Amex when we had the cheap PV, but all I needed was faders, bro,
00:47to separate my sound, and I knew how to do the rest, and I had good engineers smart enough to
00:52move out my way. Backstage Pass, hosted by Gentry Thomas.
