00:12was sealed off as over 4,000 police officers
00:16searched for a cop killer.
00:18They were in a line abreast,
00:20walking towards a man who would not hesitate to shoot them.
00:2637-year-old Barry Pruden was on a killing spree.
00:31Barry Pruden had already killed police officers.
00:34We knew that he would have no qualms about shooting one of us.
00:38It was a frightening time.
00:40This is a man who's killed in Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire,
00:46multiple locations across the country.
00:48He's clearly very dangerous.
00:51They have to find him, and quickly.
00:54Trained in survival,
00:56Prudham knew how to stay hidden amongst the vast forests of Yorkshire.
01:00Today, a drone would cover that in minutes,
01:03but the technology wasn't available then.
01:06It was down to a pair of eyes and a pair of boots.
01:09It was as simple as that.
01:10In total, officers would spend 17 days searching for Prudham.
01:15A killer on the run just puts the fear of God into everybody.
01:22Where is he going to pop up next?
01:24Detectives were in a race against time
01:27to reveal Barry Prudham as one of Britain's most evil killers.
01:54When Barry Prudham decided to take his own life rather than face justice,
02:00it brought an end to the nationwide search that had gripped the country for over two weeks
02:06during the summer of 1982.
02:09It became the biggest manhunt in British history.
02:14It created so much fear, not just in the small market town of Malton,
02:17but throughout the UK, because nobody knew where or when he was going to strike again.
02:23Prudham had burgled, taken hostages, and tried to kill anyone who confronted him.
02:29Chief Constable Kenneth Henshaw led the police operation
02:33that tried to catch the man who'd murdered one of their own.
02:38His actions certainly were evil.
02:42I think his life story was one of failure,
02:46and he certainly vented his vengeance against authority.
02:52It was the police that had caused all this trouble for him,
02:56not the things that he'd done, and therefore he wanted to kill us.
03:05This killer's story begins in the Yorkshire city of Leeds in 1944.
03:12We don't know an awful lot about Prudham's childhood, really.
03:16We know that his mother was unmarried
03:19and that he didn't really know his real father,
03:23and when his mum did eventually get married,
03:26he took that man's name and he basically became his father.
03:32He doesn't seem to have been unusual in any way.
03:38He wasn't a high achiever, but he wasn't an underachiever.
03:42He just seemed to go through life.
03:46It's quite possible that because of his very unremarkable childhood
03:51and the fact that he didn't really know his dad
03:54may have given him the feeling that he was unnoticed
03:59but felt he deserved more notice.
04:02In 1965, 21-year-old Barry Prudham got married
04:07and the couple had two children.
04:10He worked full-time as an electrician
04:13but also began training as a part-time soldier.
04:18He did survival training.
04:20He did reconnaissance training.
04:22I think he wanted to join the SAS
04:25but in the end failed the test
04:27and went back to being an electrician.
04:31And it's quite possible that he was searching
04:33for some kind of identity within that kind of organisation,
04:37something that would give him a sense of being.
04:41But he didn't want to be an ordinary reservist.
04:43He wanted to go higher than that
04:45with those men who were considered heroes
04:47and when they rejected him,
04:49that must have been difficult.
04:55In 1973, 28-year-old Prudham received news
05:00that his mother, Kathleen, had died at the age of 53
05:04while she was on holiday on the Kent coast.
05:07Prudham's mother died in suspicious circumstances.
05:12She drowned, but the coroner gave an open verdict.
05:17There was a question mark over whether she had,
05:19in fact, taken her own life.
05:21That might have had a significant impact on him.
05:25He may be left wondering,
05:26was there something I could have done?
05:28Did I look after her enough?
05:31And Prudham may have felt
05:33that he'd lost his only kind of identity.
05:44Four years after losing his mother,
05:46Prudham decided that he wanted a new challenge
05:49and bought a business for his wife to run.
05:52He bought her an off-licence in Leeds
05:55so that she could have an income and something to do.
05:59But he needed some more money to help pay for it,
06:02so he got a job.
06:03He was a trained electrician at this point.
06:06He got a job in Saudi Arabia to pay for it.
06:10Whilst Prudham's working away,
06:13his wife decides to leave him.
06:18She said she couldn't take his possessiveness
06:20and jealousy anymore,
06:22which fits with the kind of person, I think,
06:26that Prudham is starting to turn into,
06:29a very, perhaps, controlling person
06:33who's asserting himself and his personality on people
06:37because he seems to have difficulties with that.
06:39He would have felt a deep sense of injustice
06:42that this had happened to him.
06:45And, of course, this comes after his mother
06:48and the way that she died as well.
06:51So he's not having much control over his life
06:54or the people in his life at this time.
07:03After the breakdown of his marriage,
07:06Prudham once again decided to leave the UK.
07:10He got a girlfriend, then they went travelling to America,
07:12and he managed to get a gun.
07:16Obviously, he's starting then to think about guns, weapons,
07:22and you wonder what was going on in his mind at that point.
07:29They come back to this country in 1980,
07:32and as part of his luggage, Prudham brings with him a gun.
07:38Now, why on earth he brought a pistol back with him
07:41is completely mysterious.
07:43Anyway, they set up house together in Leeds,
07:46and life goes on.
07:49Two years after his return from America,
07:53Prudham was arrested for a violent attack.
07:56In January 1982, for reasons that we simply do not know,
08:02Prudham attacks a man with an iron bar in an argument.
08:06He's caught.
08:08He's given bail.
08:09And at that point, for some reason,
08:12I don't think anybody will ever really know,
08:15Prudham decides to go on the run.
08:23Skipping bail is actually a really stupid thing to do,
08:27because just because you skip bail doesn't mean it goes away.
08:34Prudham is probably thinking,
08:36you're not controlling me,
08:37you're not going to tell me what to do.
08:39You know, I can survive on my own.
08:42And off he goes.
08:44But of course, that's not really thought through.
08:46The system doesn't go away just because you do.
08:56On the 17th of June, 1982,
08:59PC David Haig was sent to a car park north of Leeds
09:04to arrest a known petty criminal who was sleeping rough.
09:09I'd met David on a couple of occasions.
09:12I knew he was a family man.
09:14He was well-loved, and he was well-respected by the people.
09:17After David confronted who he thought he'd been sent out to arrest,
09:22police control lost contact with him.
09:25He's not responding to the radio,
09:27so another officer is dispatched
09:29to find out what's happened to him.
09:33And that's when they discover his body beside his panda car.
09:39The person at the very top of the list of suspects
09:42would have been the person that PC Haig had gone out to arrest,
09:46but it was very quickly found out
09:48that that person was already in custody,
09:51so it could not have been him.
09:53The police are faced with a scene.
09:56They have no idea what's happened,
09:58and they have no idea what the motivation is.
10:02It was a scene that could shake
10:04even the most seasoned of officers.
10:07PC David Haig had been killed in broad daylight
10:10in the line of duty.
10:13No-one knew exactly how it happened,
10:15but one thing was clear.
10:17A cop killer was on the loose.
10:21And the hunt was on
10:23before he could strike again.
10:35In June 1982,
10:37police launched a manhunt
10:39for the killer of one of their own.
10:41PC David Haig had been found shot dead
10:44next to his patrol car
10:46at Norwood Edge Car Park, north of Leeds.
10:49His murder shocked everybody who lived in the area.
10:53North Yorkshire is a beautiful rural part of the country.
10:57There is very little crime,
10:59very few murders.
11:01There were certainly very few firearms offences.
11:05So for a police officer to be shot
11:07and killed was really extraordinary.
11:13PC Haig was the first police officer
11:16to be shot and killed in North Yorkshire, sadly.
11:20Determined to find his killer,
11:23investigators retraced David's steps
11:25and discovered that moments before his death,
11:28he'd been making notes on his clipboard
11:30about someone that he'd approached.
11:33All police knew was that it wasn't the individual
11:36that he'd been sent out to arrest,
11:38so they needed to learn as much as possible
11:41about the person he encountered.
11:44Chief Constable Kenneth Henshaw headed up the investigation.
11:49He was a very conscientious chap, was David.
11:54He asked the driver for his details
11:58and he was putting the answers down in writing
12:01on his clipboard.
12:04He gave him a name
12:06and he also gave him his date of birth.
12:09He took a note of the vehicle, the green Citroen,
12:14and he took the registration number
12:17and then went to his patrol car
12:19to have it checked on the police national computer.
12:23And he was about to speak on the radio
12:28and the man had come up behind him
12:30and shot him in the head
12:32and killed him.
12:37Police recovered David's clipboard
12:40from the scene of his murder
12:41and focused on the details he'd written down.
12:44The name the man had given, Clive Jones,
12:47came back with no leads.
12:49So detectives turned to the green Citroen.
12:53A search was made for the car,
12:56but nothing was found.
12:58And the following day,
13:00a farmer was doing his usual morning visit,
13:03and as he was at the top of the field,
13:07something glinted at the bottom.
13:10And it was the green Citroen.
13:14The driver, of course, had long gone.
13:16The police have a rough description
13:18of the man who bought the car.
13:20I think he was in London.
13:21But it's very, very vague.
13:23There's not much to go on at all.
13:24They have absolutely no clue
13:26as to who committed this appalling crime
13:30of killing a police constable in cold blood
13:32in broad daylight.
13:38Six days into searching for the killer,
13:41another murder was reported.
13:43On the 23rd of June,
13:45Kenneth got a call from another chief constable
13:47who thought this second murder over 80 miles away
13:51could be linked to David's case.
13:55They told me that there'd been an incident
13:57at Girton in Nottinghamshire
13:59where a man and woman had both been shot.
14:06The victims were a married couple,
14:0852-year-old George and 50-year-old Sylvia Luckett.
14:12Their son, Brian, was in his late 20s at the time.
14:17There was a knock at the door.
14:18It was probably about 8 o'clock in the morning.
14:20Two policemen were stood there,
14:22asked me who I was,
14:24confirmed who I was.
14:26I was taken down to the police station,
14:28and this detective by the ranking bloke
14:32told me exactly what had happened
14:34to being an intruder.
14:36And Dad had been shot.
14:37Mum had been shot,
14:39but she was alive and in hospital.
14:41Despite her injuries,
14:43Sylvia had managed to escape the intruder.
14:48She was determined.
14:49She climbed out of the house
14:50and went to her nearest neighbour
14:51with great difficulty.
14:53I don't know how long it took her to get there.
14:56She obviously alerted the police
14:58and then the whole thing got unravelled like, you know.
15:02Investigators quickly established
15:04that this was yet another
15:06seemingly motiveless murder.
15:08They examined the bullets
15:09to see if they could provide any clues.
15:12The same gun that had killed David Hague
15:15was used in the murder of Mr Luckett,
15:18and therefore it was clear
15:19that we had a dangerous criminal
15:21on a national scale,
15:23loose in the country.
15:28Police were no closer
15:29to identifying the killer.
15:32All they knew was
15:33that the suspect was male
15:34and that he'd stolen a car
15:36from the Lucketts,
15:37a brown rover.
15:40The focus then began
15:42on trying to trace
15:44the brown rover car,
15:45and an instruction went out
15:46to all forces
15:47to look and check
15:49every brown rover car
15:51that they could see.
15:58On day seven of the manhunt,
16:01the 24th of June,
16:02a call came in to say
16:04PC Ken Oliver
16:05had been shot in Dolby Forest
16:07in North Yorkshire.
16:08PC Jim Kilmartin
16:10was on duty
16:11when he heard the news.
16:12When the call came through
16:14to the control room
16:15at Scarborough
16:16that this had happened,
16:17I made my way out
16:18to Bickley
16:19where I met Ken Oliver.
16:21Ken had managed
16:22to avoid any fatal shots
16:24and was able
16:25to tell his colleagues
16:26that this began
16:27when he spotted
16:28the brown rover car
16:29that they were all
16:30on the lookout for.
16:32They'd walked to the car
16:34and he recalled
16:35that looking in the eyes
16:37of the driver,
16:38he realised
16:39that something
16:39was not right.
16:41He realised
16:43that the man
16:43was turning in his seat,
16:45thrusting a gun
16:47into his face
16:48and fired.
16:49The shot grazed his nose
16:50and startled him.
16:53Ken then ran
16:54back to the car.
16:55As he ran,
16:56he could feel bullets
16:57plucking at his coat
16:58and his collar
16:59and one went through
17:01his trousers
17:02and hit him
17:03in the thigh.
17:07Despite being hit,
17:08Ken managed
17:09to run to a house
17:10nearby
17:11and call for backup.
17:13Officers were quick
17:14to the scene
17:14hoping to follow
17:15the trail
17:16of the gunman.
17:18I then left Ken
17:20and I took off
17:21to trail
17:22the car
17:23that they'd driven off.
17:25As I drove along
17:26the road,
17:26a report came in
17:27over the radio
17:28that the Forestry Commission
17:30had seen smoke
17:31arising
17:32from the forest area
17:34and as I turned
17:35a corner,
17:36I could see
17:37a car burning.
17:38Jim knew he wasn't
17:40far behind the suspect
17:42and began tracing him.
17:45I could see
17:46by the way
17:47things had gone
17:48and the way
17:49some of the debris
17:50had been left behind
17:51that he'd made off
17:53in the direction
17:53into the woods.
17:55He'd gone round trees
17:57two and three times,
17:59he'd climbed up banks
18:00and jumped down
18:01over banks
18:02so I could tell
18:04that here was a man
18:05who'd obviously
18:06been trained.
18:07He knew what
18:08he was doing.
18:10At one point,
18:11I came across
18:12the trail
18:13that took to a bank
18:14and on the bank
18:15was a clear muddy patch
18:17and right in that patch
18:19was a clear footprint.
18:22The footprint
18:23was a strong lead
18:25but as night fell
18:26the trail went cold.
18:28Bullets retrieved
18:29from the scene
18:30confirmed the suspect
18:31was the same man
18:32that murdered
18:33David Haig
18:34and George Luckett.
18:35Ken was able
18:37to give a description
18:38of the suspect
18:39which was circulated
18:40within the
18:41North Yorkshire
18:42police force.
18:43One officer
18:44recognised him
18:45as the man
18:46who'd skipped bail
18:47five months earlier.
18:50A policeman
18:51at the Bridewell
18:52in Leeds here
18:53said,
18:54oh, I know that fella.
18:55He sent photographs
18:56and details of him
18:58and of course
18:59it was shown
19:00to Ken Oliver.
19:01I think it quite upset him
19:02actually
19:02to see the man's photograph.
19:05Ten days
19:06after the first murder
19:07police had the name
19:09of the man
19:09they were hunting
19:1037-year-old
19:12Barry Prudham.
19:16The last sighting
19:18of him
19:18was somewhere
19:19in the expanse
19:20of Dolby Forest.
19:22Today
19:23a drone
19:23would cover that
19:24in minutes
19:25but the technology
19:27wasn't available then.

20:24police were hunting

20:29and dangerous
20:29gunman
20:30who'd already
20:31killed twice
20:32and was willing
20:33to shoot anyone
20:34who confronted him.
20:35Police didn't know
20:37where he was
20:38but now they
20:39had a name
20:39they were able
20:40to search
20:41his home.
20:44In there
20:45they found
20:45lots of books
20:46about escape
20:47of A and
20:48the SES
20:49various things
20:50like that
20:50and a book
20:52by Eddie McGee.
20:55So we then
20:56had a clear
20:57indication
20:58that he was
20:58somebody who was
20:59quite clearly
21:01able to live
21:01rough
21:02and to move
21:03through country
21:03evading
21:04capture.
21:08That was part
21:08of the problem
21:09of finding
21:09this guy
21:10because he
21:12was skilled
21:12in hiding
21:13himself.
21:14He was very
21:15clever
21:16very clever.
21:19They knew
21:20that not only
21:21was he somewhat
21:22capable
21:23but also
21:24very very
21:25willing
21:25to go
21:26into hiding
21:27and that
21:28that might
21:29make it
21:30a lot more
21:31difficult
21:31for them
21:32to clear
21:32this up
21:33really quickly.
21:34As the search
21:36for prudom
21:36continued
21:37the media
21:38interest
21:39began to
21:39grow.
21:41The story
21:42just kept
21:43building and
21:44building and
21:44building.
21:45We all
21:45envisaged
21:46that he
21:46would be
21:47caught
21:47within
21:47a couple
21:49of days.
21:52And I
21:53think what
21:54made the
21:54story so
21:55big was
21:55it just
21:56went on
21:56and on
21:57and on
21:57day after
21:59day
21:59night
