A designer has gone viral with a stunning jacket lined with clothes that used to belong to his client's late mom so she could “always be close to him.” Mason Wagner, 25, from Racine, Wisconsin, started his clothing design company GoodNatured as a creative outlet, after seeing hundreds of pounds of used cloth on Facebook Marketplace. Right from the first idea he had – creating a jacket out of old painters' drop cloths – his designs have gone viral, prompting hundreds of unique requests. One request came from Eric, whose mom had recently passed away, and he had a collection of her clothing that meant a lot to him. Eric asked Mason if he could turn his mom's clothes into something he could wear, to keep her close. Mason admitted he initially wasn't sure what to create, so spoke to his grandmother, a lifelong quilter, and came up with an idea to piece the garments together to line the inside of a jacket. The process was more difficult than Mason thought, as the different weights and textures of the clothes meant he spent around 10 hours trying to make the lining work. Knowing Eric's mom's love of the ocean, he used a material for the jacket itself evoking water.

00:00Eric had some clothes from his mother who had passed away, asking, how can I make that into
00:04a jacket? What we came up with was making it the lining. It's a little easier to wear,
00:08but it's also close to your heart. My mom and I were very close. She passed away unexpectedly
00:14just about two years ago. Her and I talked on the phone every day. She gave so much of herself
00:21to others, and it's been really hard without her. Eric had reached out and let me know that he had
00:26some clothes from his mother. He's like, hey, do you have any ideas? And he kind of just left it
00:31up
00:31to me. My mom lived in Ohio her whole life, but she loved the ocean and the beach. I think
00:38that was
00:39her happy place for sure. So, you know, found some scarves with anchors on it. When I think of my
00:45mom,
00:46I think of her like being really happy at the ocean. And so the pieces I was looking were for
00:52things that helped remind me of that. The fabrics that he had were very different thicknesses and,
00:57you know, elasticities to kind of makes it really tough to make one singular garment. After talking
01:03with my grandma, who's a big quilter, seemed like a good way to put together a bunch of different
01:08fabrics that don't look like they go together and make it one thing. What we came up with was making
01:12it the lining. And the good part about that is it's a little easier to wear, but it's also close
01:17to
01:17your heart. The first time I saw it was when he sent me the link to an Instagram post that
01:24has
01:24now gone viral. I thought he did a remarkable job honoring my mom's memory and telling her story.
01:31It feels really special. It feels like I have her close to me, which is really nice.
