Portugal tests fire response in European exercise with 700 operatives from six countries

With the arrival of hot weather and the increased risk of fires, more than 700 operatives from six European countries took part in an exercise in Viseu that simulated a large rural fire.

00:00With the arrival of hot weather, Portugal is once again preparing for the fire season.
00:05Every year, fire consumed thousands of hectares, making the country one of the hardest hit
00:10in Europe.
00:12In Viseu, more than 700 emergency responders from six European countries participated in
00:18a major international civil protection exercise.
00:21Teams from Cyprus, Czechia, Spain, France, Poland and Portugal tested their response
00:27to a large scale, rapidly spreading wildfire.
00:31The exercise involved real resources on the ground, day and night operations and simulated
00:36scenarios that included forested areas and residential zones without any risk to the public.
00:43In addition to firefighting, the exercise included training in evacuation procedures, support
00:49for affected communities and coordination of national and international resources.
00:55Funded by the European Union, the exercise aims to strengthen international cooperation
00:59and prepare European countries to respond to increasingly frequent and complex disasters.
