In 1925, the Lippe capital of Detmold stood at the center of a "wave of festivities" marking the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Hermannsdenkmal.
On the day of commemoration, each distinct political subculture hosted its own separate celebration at the monument.
The *Deutsche Turnerschaft* (German Gymnastics Association) was the most heavily represented group; through its plan for a relay run that traversed the entirety of Germany beforehand, it succeeded in overshadowing all other political organizations.
The *Deutsche Turnerschaft*—which felt called to pursue higher national objectives and remained deeply attached to a "glorious German past"—had always demonstrated a knack for harnessing national celebrations to advance the cause of the gymnastics movement.
