00:04On Ask This Old House, our experts travel across the country to answer questions about your house.
00:17Today, Richard will show us how to make an old toilet fit properly on a new tile floor.
00:23Then, Lee offers some useful maintenance tips that will keep your gas-powered mower up and running.
00:28Something that an average homeowner can do?
00:30I think so. I really do.
00:32And, have you ever wanted to add a secret door to your space?
00:36Nathan will show you how.
00:40Nice.
00:41On Ask This Old House.
00:51Hey Richard.
00:52Hey Kevin.
00:52Funny finding you by the toilet.
00:54Well, I thought we'd talk about one of the most important seals in the entire house,
00:57and that's underneath the toilet, between the toilet bowl and the flange.
01:00Something most people probably never see.
01:03Absolutely.
01:03And, it's a seal that's challenged all the time.
01:06You know, the toilet can rock or the floor can rot away.
01:08So, I thought we'd look here to see what's underneath in the place you don't see.
01:12Okay.
01:13Okay.
01:13So, here's the standard.
01:14This happens to be PVC, but this is called a closet flange, a toilet flange.
01:18But, in an older building, it could be cast iron, it could be stainless steel.
01:22You'll always have these two bolts and have a wax seal.
01:25And, this is actually connected to the plumbing.
01:28It's connected to the plumbing, the pipe itself, the drain pipe.
01:31But, it's also connected to the building.
01:33It has to be really secure.
01:34Because, this is the critical.
01:35You don't want to trust the pipe.
01:36You want to trust the building to hold the torque of that toilet.
01:40Okay.
01:40So, bring that toilet in.
01:41I'll just show you.
01:43So, on the bottom is the horn of the toilet.
01:45We need to make a nice tight seal against sewer gas.
01:47And, so, that would sit here.
01:49And, that would then compress right against the air and make a nice tight seal.
01:53But, it's only going to be as good as the connection.
01:55Because, if you wiggle the toilet enough, that wax seal gets deformed.
01:59Yeah.
01:59So, now, that's perfect, you know, for the typical flange.
02:03But, now, sometimes, the floor has been rotted.
02:05You'd like to get some new plywood in there.
02:07You'd like to raise the grade.
02:08Or, in my own house case, I wanted to get rid of the thresholds.
02:12So, I wanted to add some underlayment, some three quarters of an inch.
02:16So, I came on top here.
02:18Are you doing a renovation without Tommy's permission?
02:20Don't tell him, please.
02:22Okay.
02:22So, now, bring it back in.
02:24So, you might be able to do this.
02:27And, they make a wax ring with a horn.
02:29That'll give you about three quarters of an inch.
02:31So, this is on the edge you've been able to be a tight seal.
02:35Okay.
02:36Now, what happens, though, if you want to go a little higher?
02:39So, if you now go here.
02:40So, now, it's got a big gap.
02:42What we did historically was to add these flange shims.
02:47If you're going to put them together, you could actually glue them
02:49because they're not going to be watertight otherwise.
02:52And, now, you could do your buildup.
02:54Pick as many as you need.
02:55Pick as many as you need.
02:56Okay.
02:57And, then, you could use a conventional.
02:59So, go ahead.
02:59Yeah.
03:00Wax seal.
03:01You get it tight there.
03:02I will point out, Richard.
03:04Originally, your bolts were coming through.
03:07Correct.
03:07Which allows me to secure it down.
03:09Correct.
03:09They are no longer coming through.
03:10Correct.
03:11So, there's a limit.
03:12Now, what I want to introduce is an interesting kit that I saw.
03:17It has a flange like this.
03:19It has a wax seal right here.
03:20Now, I want to do one thing before I do this.
03:23This system comes with longer bolts.
03:26Can I see that?
03:26Yep.
03:27Just so you understand how that works.
03:28So, on the bottom, you've got sort of that rectangular shape,
03:31which allows you to put it in, slide into place, and then, when you turn it, it doesn't pull
03:36up.
03:36It has a plastic tab right here, which is really important.
03:40These things hold these things perfectly, so that when you bring the toilet down, they're
03:44not flopping around.
03:45We come down over the top.
03:50So, now, bring that in, and watch what happens.
03:56You see it?
03:57Oh, yeah.
03:57You've got a sort of a shock absorber keeping a tight seal no matter what happens up here,
04:02but you've got a positive seal at the bottom.
04:04Now, you can secure this down.
04:06Because I've got the bolts that are now coming through.
04:08That's right.
04:09Because you've extended those.
04:10That's right.
04:10You can cut them if you have to.
04:11You can just take a saw and cut them off at the right height and put the caps on.
04:15But then you can finish it off nicely.
04:17Okay.
04:17So, with this, if you're going to have as much as an inch or inch and a half buildup,
04:22this is really a perfect solution.
04:24If you've got smaller, then you could use, if there's a half inch or three-quarters of an
04:29inch in concert with these flanges are fine.
04:31But this is a really good innovation.
04:33It's a good way to solve it because otherwise you'd have to ask a plumber to come, cut the
04:38pipe, make a new connection underneath it, or adapt it to raise that grade.
04:42Yeah.
04:42And how are you going to find a plumber?
04:43You can't find a plumber.
04:44I have caller ID when you call me.
04:45I won't tell Tom that you're freelancing.
04:47Thank you, Richard.
04:48All right.
04:56Hey, Lee.
04:57How you doing?
04:57Good to see you.
04:58All right.
04:58Same here.
04:59Oh, look at this.
05:00Here we go.
05:03We always have issues because these things have been sitting in the garage or in the shed.
05:07So we have a fuel issue we might have to look at, air cleaner issues, things like that,
05:12spark plug issues.
05:12All the things that come with a small engine.
05:14Yes.
05:14Snow blower, weed whacker, even the gas blowers, anything with gas that has carburetors.
05:20Okay.
05:20Where do you want to start?
05:21So there's three things that make these things start up.
05:24Fuel, a spark, and also air.
05:27Nice.
05:27Okay.
05:28Sort of same for every small engine.
05:30And I guess if I've got one of these at home, I want to think about keeping it in the
05:34good
05:34shape.
05:34Or if it's not running.
05:36Yes.
05:36How do I fix it myself?
05:38Do some troubleshooting.
05:39All right.
05:40So what I like to do is check the air filters.
05:44This is probably the easiest, most straightforward thing you can do.
05:47Yep.
05:47So the engine has to breathe.
05:49But look at this.
05:50This is brand new.
05:51So we know that.
05:52Beautiful, right?
05:53That's exactly what we want it to look like.
05:55Not going to look like this after a season or two.
05:57Correct.
05:58It's going to be gray.
05:58It's going to be dirt.
05:59So just blow it out.
06:01You could if you want it, or you could just get a new one.
06:04Okay.
06:05So we have that.
06:06Yep.
06:06And then underneath that is our carburetor.
06:09So this is the fuel tank.
06:10Correct.
06:10But eventually it's actually going into that carburetor because that's where all the business
06:14is happening.
06:15Yes.
06:15It gives it fuel for the engine to run.
06:17If you have an issue with it, you might want to loosen it up.
06:19There's a bolt under here.
06:20We loosen that up and drain out the gas that's in the bowl.
06:23Fuel is kind of an issue.
06:24Yes.
06:25Especially these days.
06:26It is.
06:26Right?
06:27So you have stabilizers that are really good to put in.
06:31So you're not having issues like this.
06:33See the separation from the moisture that's in the fuel.
06:36Kind of like a gel on the bottom.
06:38Yes.
06:38And then something a little thinner up on top.
06:41Correct.
06:41That is fuel that's separated.
06:43That's not going to run and that's going to gunk up your machine.
06:46Exactly.
06:46And that's happening why?
06:47Because there's water?
06:48There's water.
06:49Condensation, water, just moisture in the air.
06:51Okay.
06:52And you also could have a little bit of water in your gas tank.
06:54So you've got to change, you know, your fuel tank.
06:56Yeah, this is the thing with our fuel these days.
06:58Yes.
06:58Right?
06:59They've added the ethanol.
07:00Yes.
07:00So you've got a solution to prevent that?
07:02Yes.
07:02We have stabilizer.
07:04So this is good fuel right here.
07:06Yeah, it's good fuel.
07:06That's what I want it to look like.
07:08Yeah.
07:08Okay.
07:09And you can have stabilizer you can put into it.
07:11You want to mix some?
07:12Sure.
07:13Right.
07:14I'm going to open this up here.
07:16They've got ratios for this, you know, how many ounces to a gallon.
07:19But just to give a sense of what's going on.
07:21And so the combination of those two, hopefully, is going to prevent this from happening.
07:27Correct.
07:27Beautiful.
07:28I like that.
07:29Although, you know what I like even more?
07:31I've got to tell you, I'm partial to this stuff.
07:32You like this stuff?
07:32Okay.
07:33I do.
07:33So like on my backpack blower, I don't use it that much.
07:36It's sitting there a lot.
07:37Yep.
07:38This works really well.
07:39And so this is...
07:40That's an all-free.
07:41Yeah.
07:42So you're not going to get the gelling up.
07:44Gallon for gallon, a lot more expensive.
07:46Yes.
07:46But if it prevents this from happening or from that from gunking up, it could be worth the price.
07:53Yes.
07:53Beautiful.
07:54Totally.
07:54All right.
07:55So on the carburetor, if we get the separation or we get buildup and the thing stops working, can I
08:03fix it?
08:04Sure.
08:05Look at this big cutout we have here.
08:06Obviously, it doesn't go with this, but this is all the moving parts.
08:09So you hold that right there.
08:10I'm going to hold that for you.
08:11Yep.
08:11Okay.
08:12So look at this.
08:14Yep.
08:14So this would be the choke.
08:16Okay.
08:16So you open this, it lets more air in.
08:19Yes.
08:19Closes it down.
08:20Correct.
08:20Boom.
08:21And then how do the floats work?
08:22The floats go up and down by the fuel that you're asking for.
08:27Right.
08:28So that's going to tell us how much is in the well if we need more.
08:31But it has these jets.
08:34So these jets and ports have to be clean.
08:36What are we suggesting?
08:38Dump this out?
08:39Dump this out.
08:39And start cleaning?
08:40Correct.
08:40Dump that out in a container.
08:42Maybe you have to take it back to your gas station, local gas station, they'll take it.
08:45Okay.
08:46So that's it poured out.
08:47Yep.
08:48This coloration.
08:49And I mean, I can see it.
08:50There's actually some granular grit in the bottom there too.
08:54Yep.
08:54That can't be good for the operation.
08:57So once I dump all that out.
08:58Mm-hmm.
08:59You're telling me that these, you know, little stems like this, little holes like this need
09:03to be cleaned?
09:03Correct.
09:04Because the fuel is actually blowing through there.
09:06Mm-hmm.
09:06Okay.
09:06So you can have a little brush like these.
09:08See the brush?
09:09That cleans those out really well.
09:10Pipe cleaner brush?
09:11Yep.
09:14Get that cleaned out.
09:15See that?
09:16Yep.
09:16Clean up those ports.
09:18Okay.
09:19And then let's put your glasses on and I'm going to shoot some of this carburetor cleaner,
09:24which evaporates really quickly and that cleans out real good.
09:27Carb choke parts and cleaner.
09:32Look at that.
09:33See that?
09:34It's going to blow the gunk out.
09:35Correct.
09:36And hopefully, you get this nice and clean, you get those ports cleaned, we're putting
09:41this guy-
09:42Back together.
09:43Back together.
09:44Yep.
09:44Back into your mower.
09:46I'm not going to screw that back together, but I will just set it down.
09:48Okay, great.
09:49So fuel, air, and you said the third thing is spark?
09:53And look what gives us spark.
09:54These spark plugs.
09:55Okay.
09:56So this one here, brand new.
09:57So that's what you want them to look like.
09:59What do you think?
10:00Clean.
10:00Yep.
10:01No buildup.
10:02And I'm looking at the little arch right there and a little copper below.
10:07There's a little gap.
10:08Yep.
10:09That's what we want, right?
10:10Yes.
10:10Because that creates a little arc.
10:11That's what we want.
10:12Okay.
10:13This one here has a little bit of buildup on it.
10:15And when we say buildup, we're talking carbon.
10:18So the fact that it is dark and dirty.
10:20Yeah.
10:21Can that be cleaned or is this one toast?
10:22You can probably get away with cleaning this one.
10:24Okay.
10:24Yeah.
10:24But I have another one here that I think would be toast.
10:27I think that one there would.
10:28Way more buildup there.
10:30Way more buildup.
10:30You think this one has served its purpose and off it goes.
10:33Exactly.
10:33And then sometimes they come damaged and this one doesn't have that arc on it.
10:37Okay.
10:37So that one there, I would take it to your small engine repair because it could be lost inside
10:42the motor.
10:42So that right there is missing.
10:45Yes.
10:46And if it's not here, it could be over there.
10:48Exactly.
10:49Beautiful.
10:50Let me steal those.
10:52Yep.
10:53And then there's a tester for these.
10:55Okay.
10:55I'm going to walk you through it.
10:56We're going to talk about it.
10:57Okay.
10:57So what I would do is you plug this on the spark plug.
11:01So this is a plug in my mower.
11:04Yes.
11:04And in there, it's got a cap.
11:06And then we're going to replace that with this.
11:08Okay.
11:08All right.
11:09And then we're going to start the engine and that light should glow.
11:13So if we put the cap back on there, we've basically got the same circuit.
11:17Yes.
11:17Except this now interrupts it.
11:19Mm-hmm.
11:19And what happens?
11:20There's a light inside here that's going to glow.
11:22When that glows, that means this plug is good.
11:25So we're good there.
11:27So if I'm pulling the cord, the machine's not working.
11:30I suspect it's a spark plug.
11:32I could put this on.
11:33If I get a light, it tells me spark plugs good, problem somewhere else.
11:36Problem somewhere else.
11:37Ooh, that's pretty sexy.
11:39Okay.
11:39All right.
11:40Then the other thing we have is oil in here.
11:42Which is not part of the gas mix.
11:44Some people confuse that.
11:45Yes.
11:46Oil is just for?
11:47Oil is for the lubrication of the engine.
11:49That's all it is.
11:50Okay.
11:51All right.
11:51And then we have some samples over here.
11:53What it looks like after a year or so in the engine.
11:58That's dirty.
11:59Dirty oil.
11:59You can't even see through it.
12:01Correct.
12:01Where is the good stuff?
12:02Brand new oil.
12:04Dark but translucent, right?
12:06Nice color.
12:07So this eventually becomes this with use.
12:09Yes.
12:10How frequently do I want to change it out?
12:11If I'm using it once a week, maybe even twice a week, I want to change it once a year.
12:16All right.
12:17And then some machines, this particular one does not have it, but some machines have an oil filter.
12:21Right.
12:21Okay.
12:22So that should be changed.
12:23So I would suggest to stock up with a couple of these.
12:25Yeah.
12:26Would you change the filter every time you change the oil?
12:29Yes.
12:30Definitely.
12:30Definitely.
12:31But the trick on these, Kevin, if you flip it around, there's a gasket on here.
12:34I don't want you to put the gasket on dry.
12:36Okay.
12:37What I want you to do is take your finger, rub some oil on it, and then put that on.
12:41Okay.
12:41Because if it's on dry, it would be almost impossible to get it off.
12:44How about if I take your finger and I put some oil on it?
12:46You can do that.
12:47Well, we're going to change these every once so often because they get dirty as well.
12:50Correct.
12:51Okay.
12:52So I guess the big question is, Lee, do you think all of these steps, preventative and repair,
12:58is something that an average homeowner can do?
13:00I think so.
13:00I really do.
13:01I really do.
13:01You can do it.
13:02Just take your time.
13:04Saturday morning.
13:04They're pretty simple, and they haven't really changed the design.
13:07Haven't changed in over a hundred years.
13:08Good deal.
13:09All right.
13:10Well, if that's the case then, I'll make sure I bring mine down and have you get after it.
13:13We'll figure it out.
13:14Thanks.
13:14You got it, Lee.
13:37Hey, Brett.
13:38Hey, Nathan.
13:38Nice to meet you.
13:39Nice to meet you as well.
13:40Come on in.
13:40Beautiful spot you guys have here.
13:42Yeah.
13:42Beautiful home.
13:43Beautiful neighborhood.
13:44It's an 80s-style cape home.
13:46Nice.
13:46It's pretty basic.
13:47Yep.
13:48And we like to add some creativity and unique spaces to our home.
13:51And you wrote in about a pretty cool idea.
13:53Yeah.
13:53So come on over here.
13:55So in behind this wall here is just your basic closet.
13:58Okay.
13:59But we want to put in a bookshelf and turn this into a classic speakeasy.
14:03So like some hidden doors?
14:04Yeah, exactly.
14:05Mind if I take a look?
14:06Go on in.
14:06All right.
14:07You guys have been busy in here.
14:09Yeah.
14:09This is looking good.
14:10We had it all cleared out and had an electrician come by and kill all the power.
14:15Yep.
14:15Yep.
14:16No plumbing in the wall here.
14:17What did this look like before?
14:18Oh, yeah.
14:19Let me give you a quick look.
14:21So this thing, this space was pretty packed.
14:23It was a proper bar.
14:25You can see all our barware there in the back.
14:27Nice.
14:28We even had some beer steins for hosting our Oktoberfest in the fall.
14:32Fully stocked.
14:33Yep.
14:33So it's going to be fun to change this over into a speakeasy now.
14:37One concern I have though is for framing, is this a load-bearing wall at all?
14:41It's not.
14:42We actually had a structural engineer come by and inspect it.
14:44Okay.
14:45All right.
14:45Great.
14:45That's going to make it framing a lot easier for us.
14:47Let's go to the other side and take a look.
14:50Yeah.
14:50So this is a nice wall to put on a hidden door right here.
14:53Yeah.
14:54What size are you thinking?
14:55Double, single?
14:56I prefer to have a double door.
14:58Okay.
14:58We want to be able to open it up and kind of walk in.
15:00All right.
15:00So a double door swinging out.
15:03Probably could fit.
15:07That's about a six foot kit right there.
15:09That would work.
15:09That's a really nice width.
15:10And then we'll check the height.
15:12It'll probably finish somewhere around six, eight.
15:15Okay.
15:15Which is about there.
15:17So I think that would fit well into that beam.
15:19And we'd like to be able to paint it and kind of blend it into the wall in the room.
15:23So I actually have a kit in mind.
15:25I'm going to go pick it up and we'll get started.
15:27Great.
15:31All right.
15:32Let's get started with our layout.
15:33The kit that I picked up is 70 inches wide, 80 inches tall, but the rough opening called
15:38for is 72 inches wide and 82 inches tall.
15:41Okay.
15:42I'd like to center it in this wall.
15:44Let's get started there.
15:46All right.
15:47So we've got 92 3 quarter.
15:52So let's go 46 3 eighths.
15:54Okay.
15:57And then we'll check it coming back.
16:0146 3 eighths.
16:02All right.
16:02So we've got a good center line to work off of.
16:05So I'm just going to make a little, little mark here, just a reference.
16:12All right.
16:12So that's our center line.
16:13So off of this point, we're going to go 36 inches is what we need to come over.
16:18Okay.
16:18So we've got 36.
16:22And then 36.
16:31All right.
16:31So let's double check that.
16:32Then we've got our 72.
16:36All right.
16:36Perfect.
16:38All right.
16:38Now I'm going to go off our mark here and I'm going to make a plumb line for the outside
16:42of our opening.
16:43All right.
16:44You can plumb that side up.
16:56Looks good.
16:57All right.
16:57So now I'm going to take my tape and I'm going to measure up 82 inches from the finished floor
17:02because this kit has a threshold on it.
17:04So it's going to sit right on the floor.
17:07All right.
17:08So now we're just going to connect those dots.
17:16So the next step that I want to do is transfer this layout to the inside.
17:21I'm going to pull off the baseboard, save that for later.
17:24Then we can start cutting the drywall up.
17:25Great.
17:30All right.
17:30We're ready to cut the drywall.
17:31I'm going to use an oscillating tool.
17:32We're only going to cut about a half inch deep.
17:34I also have the vacuum set up to help control the dust.
17:36So we'll plunge in.
17:38We'll cut out our rough opening and pull the drywall down.
17:40Sounds good.
17:46Now we can see what we're working with.
17:47We're going to take these typical studs out.
17:49I'm going to leave a little up top, but we're going to cut that with an oscillating tool.
17:52All right.
17:53Okay.
17:54How much room are you leaving up there again?
17:56So what I'm doing is I'm making a three inch mark up behind the drywall because we're going
18:02to put a, like a non load bearing header in here, just two, two by fours on the flat, which
18:07is really just going to support the trim or any drywall.
18:10So I'm making a three inch mark.
18:11We'll take the oscillating tool.
18:12We'll cut up there and that header package will tuck up inside.
18:15Got it.
18:19Now that we have those laid out, I'm going to make a quick relief cut down here at the middle
18:23point.
18:23It's going to make it easier to pull those out after you cut them.
18:26Sounds good.
18:26All right.
18:48So I brought along this framing mock up to show you what we're going to be doing because
18:53everything's going to be tucked in and behind the drywall.
18:55So it's kind of hard to see, but let's start at the bottom.
18:57We've got our bottom plate, which is still there.
18:59We're going to be introducing a king stud and a jack stud.
19:02The jack stud will support our header, which we're going to put in there up behind the drywall.
19:06And remember when we made all those cuts, there's our typical stud or our common stud,
19:10which we turned into a cripple stud.
19:12And then we have a double top plate, which is up there.
19:14So we're going to be framing from the bottom up, putting the king stud and the jack stud together,
19:19putting the header in, creating that rough opening we need.
19:21After we have that framed, we'll cut that bottom plate out and we'll be ready to put the door in.
19:26I didn't realize there are that many names of all the different studs.
19:28Lots of little parts and pieces.
19:30All right.
19:31Now we're ready to start framing our rough opening.
19:32I have all the pieces cut.
19:34I'm going to start by putting in my king stud on either side.
19:37This is the stud that's going to go from the bottom plate all the way up to the top plate.
19:43I already have it cut to length.
19:46So it's going to be a little tricky, but we're going to get it in there.
19:48We're going to screw that down.
19:50I'm going to go put the king stud on that side.
19:52Then I want to get my header in.
19:53Okay.
19:54Then I'm going to put the jack studs underneath, so that way we don't have to fight the header later.
19:57Yep.
19:58Okay.
20:00That first line is with the drywall.
20:02That's going to be where our jack stud goes.
20:10All right.
20:10Now we're ready to put our header package in.
20:13Yeah, so we'll put them in one at a time.
20:15Second header.
20:33All right, now we're ready to cut and remove our bottom plate.
20:43Pull it down.
20:44You pry up and I'll go down.
20:49All right, here we have our hidden door kit.
20:51It comes broken down, but it has everything we need.
20:54Let's start at the bottom here.
20:55We have our threshold.
20:56It's going to attach to our jam that's broken down as well.
20:59So we're going to put our kit together, left leg, right leg.
21:02We have a header going across the top, lock everything in.
21:05We have these hinges at the top and the bottom that have pins, so we'll need to align those
21:08onto the doors.
21:10We'll just assemble everything and then put it into place.
21:12Sounds good.
21:13All right.
21:14Try and get these pins in, and then I'm going to get the glue and the screws, and we're
21:18going to fasten things together.
21:22We're going to watch that pin.
21:23We're going to watch that dowel.
21:26All right, now let's see if it fits.
21:27Sounds good.
21:28All right.
21:30Nice and level, perfectly plump.
21:34You've got these cedar shims ripped to two inches.
21:36We're going to tuck in a fat end and then a skinny end.
21:38Put it into that void right there until it fills that space perfectly.
21:42A little screw right through that.
21:44So we're going to go top, middle, bottom.
21:51I think that looks nice.
21:52You're going to be able to put a lot of books on that shelf.
21:58Nice.
21:59All right.
22:00So the right one goes in first.
22:03Nice latch.
22:04Second one goes in.
22:05Sets it.
22:06All right.
22:07I think you're good to go.
22:08Looks great.
22:10Works perfectly, and it's exactly what we wanted.
22:12Awesome.
22:13I'm glad you're happy.
22:13But now we're going to take everything off.
22:15A little bit of primer, a little bit of paint, whatever color you like.
22:18Okay.
22:18And I think you're good to go.
22:19Sounds great.
22:20All right.
22:20Enjoy it.
22:21Thanks, Nathan.
22:22See you later.
22:42Next time on Ask This Old House, Morrow teaches a homeowner how to paint their ceiling.
22:48And you're going to get really close to the crown.
22:51Now you go back and you spread the paint.
22:54Then, Nathan discusses the options available in home siding.
23:00And do your floors squeak?
23:01Boy, that floor has a lot to say there, doesn't it?
23:04Tommy helps a homeowner make his floors nice and quiet.
23:07All that on Ask This Old House.
23:10All that on Ask This Old House.
23:36All that on Ask This Old House.
23:37Well, thanks, David.
