03:27They see their loved one is shot in the head.
03:29In the passenger seat of the vehicle, we learned that the surviving victim was the driver of the
03:35vehicle and drove the victim to the residence after the shooting.
03:40The actual shooting happened at a restaurant parking lot, which is probably five or ten minutes
03:45away.
03:48At this point, we're going to take the surviving victim back to the 4th District Station for
03:52questioning.
03:56When I arrive on scene, the victim has been taken from the scene by the coroner's office.
04:06I learned that the victim's name was Malcolm Solomon.
04:09He was 22 years old and a New Orleans native.
04:12His friends and family called him Paul.
04:17I was told there was a police officer in the gas station on the opposite side of the restaurant
04:23where the shooting took place.
04:25That officer heard the gunshots, so he called them out on the radio, and then he made his
04:32way over there.
04:33By the time he got there, the perpetrators had fled, and the surviving victim had left
04:38in her car with the deceased victim.
04:40Once they got to his house, the call was made to 911 that there was a shot person there,
04:45and then it was pretty easy to connect the two.

04:52When I got over there, somebody jumped out the dumpster and went around the dumpster and
04:55started shooting.

07:24The surviving victim has probably been through one of the most traumatic experiences
07:28she's been in her entire life.
07:30It was apparent very quickly that she was there to tell us what happened
07:34and she wanted to get justice for Malcolm.

10:02We know the surviving victim statements are pretty accurate

10:08that the perpetrators did show up in a red SUV.

10:16from the rear driver's side

10:19And those two people walk off camera
10:21in the direction of the dumpster.
10:25The surviving victim pulls into the spot
10:28right next to them on their passenger's side.
10:32The surviving victim gets out of her car,
10:35walks around the front of her car,
10:38gets in the passenger's side of the perpetrator's car.
10:43There was an exchange of money,
10:45and then as she's seated in the perpetrator's vehicle,
10:49roughly a minute passes
10:51when the two people that were hiding by the dumpster
10:54approach the back of the car.
10:55One person goes and opens her door
10:58and began to rob her.
11:00She tried to take her money back.
11:02The surviving victim runs around the front of her car.
11:06One of the two started shooting at her,
11:08and in turn, Malcolm gets shot
11:10as he's seated in the front passenger seat of her car.
11:16From what we have right now,
11:17we can't identify a license plate,
11:19but it corroborates her story
11:21as far as the timeline of events.
11:24Now I want to show the surviving victim a lineup.
11:28Being in a traumatic incident like that,
11:30I wanted to get her to look at it as quick as possible
11:33because that face is still fresh in her mind.

13:39But there's three perpetrators, and they would all be culpable for the death of Malcolm.
13:48I was able to get search warrants for the phone number that was registered to Kamani Johnson.
13:54And so hopefully, we're able to get better video footage after the sun comes up and get a better view
14:00of what actually took place.
14:20On a late night, early morning investigation, I'll be able to go home, decompress, change clothes, shower.
14:28Maybe get a couple hours, maybe get a couple hours of sleep, and then come back early in the morning
14:32when business is open, and start back with the investigation.
14:45We're looking for a small red Nissan SUV may or may not have ballistic damage that appeared to be narcotics

34:56get my template because I didn't want to get pulled over.

35:17I was just using it as a stopgap, man, between getting, I didn't think it was going to be

35:25I pretty much explained to him where the plate is from.
35:28He doesn't know anything about the homicide and he just explained how he came into possession
35:32of the plate.
35:56The plate on this car came off of a homicide vehicle.

36:01I just want to take the plate off, photograph the plate on the car, and then fingerprint
36:07the plate after you take it off.

36:12License plates are pretty conductive to lifting fingerprints off of them because they're
36:18a smooth surface.
36:18They're not permeable.
36:19So I'm hoping that if the plate was taken off of the perpetrator vehicle by the suspects,
36:25maybe their fingerprints will still be on the license plate somewhere.

37:02What's the odds of grabbing that plate?
37:03I was like, bro, you grabbed the worst possible plate you could have grabbed out of that.
37:07Oh, my God.
37:07So out of all of the plates in the box, he grabs the one that's tied to a murder.

37:21I don't think he's going to be one of my perpetrators.
37:24He was pretty straightforward about where he got the plate from.
37:27That plate could have come in off the street from any of the dozens of local scrappers that
37:33go around and just pick up metal and trash and bring it to these scrap yards.
37:39Now I'm just still looking for this car and see if we can find Gregory Jones.
37:46The arrest warrant is a paper document.
37:49It goes into a nationwide database.
37:51So no matter where you're at in the country, if a police officer stops you and runs your name,
37:57they're going to see that you're wanted for murder.

38:37So they finally found Gregory Jones.

38:41The marshals picked him up in the east.
38:43They were having trouble finding him.
38:45They couldn't pin him down close enough to hit a house.
38:49How the arrest went?
38:50Anything crazy?
38:51No.
38:51The marshals pretty much just said they rolled up on the house and he was outside.
38:54They saw him go inside.
38:56So they surrounded the house.
38:58Called him out.
38:59But he came out unarmed, hooked him up and took him to jail.
39:03Good decision.
39:04Yeah.
39:05Kimani and Gregory's cell phone records both came back and put him on the scene, traveling from the house to
39:11the scene and then back to where they laid up that night.
39:14So they done.
39:16It's over.
39:16So we have the guns, phone records, putting them on scene, the car right by their house.
39:21Like, we got everything.
39:24Didn't you get like a license plate off the car?
39:26Yeah, the plate was on somebody else's car that worked at a junkyard.
39:30We took the plate and fingerprinted it, but none of the fingerprints were suitable.
39:34But that doesn't hinder my investigation.
39:37Any updates on the third suspect?
39:40Not really.
39:41You got the two you need right now?
39:43Yeah, for sure.
39:44With that being said, how do you think Malcolm's family going to react to it?
39:48I think they're going to be relieved because four or five months I've been telling them that we've been looking
39:52for this dude and we finally got Gregory in jail.
39:55He's not running around anymore.
39:57The marshals are relentless.
39:59They'll find you.

41:17I look at these beautiful pictures, these beautiful faces, your brothers, your sisters,
41:24your children.
41:25You know, I just can't think of any deeper pain than the loss of a child.
41:30I think we owe it to this community.
41:32We owe it to you to take it further and try to prevent this from happening in the future.
41:38And we want your help to be able to do that.
41:40We do not want this circle to grow and grow and grow.

41:50I think that it's important that as those who have experienced pain and heartbreak move
41:56towards a sense of healing, you know that you're not doing this alone.

42:42Malcolm was totally innocent.
42:44Just wrong place, wrong time.
42:46And it's not just important for NOPD, it's important for everyone in the city for us to
42:51solve these crimes and the people that are responsible are going to face the consequences.
42:56I definitely think I've gotten justice for Malcolm Solomon.
