00:00Well, it's not complicated. The Labour Party got 35% of the vote of the last election.
00:03They're currently running at 19, 20% in the opinion polls.
00:06They've lost more or less half their support.
00:09I mean, it's quite interesting today that just very recently,
00:13Ipsos repeated a question they've asked regularly.
00:15It reflected a common criticism that's made of his prime minister,
00:18and that is, do you think you know what Keir Starmer stands for?
00:22And it continues to be the case that people, only around 30 people,
00:26say they think they know what he stands for.
00:28The proportion who hold that view is actually lower than it was when he was leader of the opposition.
00:32But the truth is, actually, Keir Starmer has never been as popular as his party.
00:37It's never been clear that he's somebody who's been an asset electorally.
00:42And in a sense, when people say that they don't know what he stands for,
00:46they are reflecting the criticism that's commonly made by people who are quite sympathetic to the Labour Party,
00:52which is that he doesn't have a story or a narrative about what the government is about,
00:56that that phrase, change in 2024, did not give anybody any idea, change to what.
01:02And it doesn't seem so far, at least, that Keir Starmer has developed the ability to overcome that weakness.
