00:18He's all over the side of the race.
00:20We're about to stop him.
00:22Deputy Ben Davidson is one of just three deputies
00:25responsible for patrolling 538 miles of rural countryside.
00:32Hey, what's going on?
00:34Okay, you got your driver's license?
00:35Okay, I ain't got no license.
00:37Okay.
00:38Come on, hop in out for a second.
00:40Hey, man, you seatbelt don't right.
00:43I think I had one on, you know what I mean?
00:47I feel like I just got a hint of marijuana.
00:49Is there anything in there we need to know about?
00:51I got a little bit of marijuana.
00:53That's just about a joint or so.
00:56All right.
00:56Well, if you would, just go step back here and hang out with him.
00:59I'm going to take a quick look, see what we can find.
01:12Oh, what's this?
01:14You're going to tell us about this?
01:16What?
01:16That's mine.
01:17That's yours?
01:18Uh-uh.
01:19Don't touch it.
01:20Turn around and put your hands behind your back.
01:22Turn around.
01:23It's just a little marijuana, and this, now, this is a felony amount of meth.
01:28Watch your foot.
01:30There are over 3,000 jails in the U.S., detaining over half a million, each one a world of
01:37its
01:38own.
01:38Running a jail is tough.
01:41Surviving inside is tougher.
01:43Hit them with the thunder.
01:45Let's go, let's go.
01:46For 120 hours, five days, our cameras are inside.
01:51Stop them now.
01:52Capturing the officers, inmates, and moments that define life behind bars.
02:09Located in the middle of the state, Leak County, Mississippi, is home to roughly 21,000 residents.
02:15But behind the quiet landscape, methamphetamine remains one of the county's most persistent
02:20threats, beating addiction, crime, and repeat arrests.
02:25At the center of it all is the Leak County Jail, where deputies manage the steady flow of inmates
02:34from six law enforcement agencies.
02:42Deputy Ben Davidson escorts the driver he arrested for meth and marijuana possession
02:47into the booking room.
02:48Hey, you all right?
02:50Oh, yeah.
02:51How are y'all?
02:51Good.
02:51Who we have here?
02:53Christopher.
02:53Christopher.
02:55What's the charge then?
02:57Controlled substance, marijuana less than 30.
03:00Driving my license suspended.
03:03County jail serves as the entry point into the justice system.
03:07Arrestees are booked, processed, and given a chance to post bail.
03:12Those who can't stay in custody until their case is decided in court.
03:16Nothing else in your pocket.
03:18Okay.
03:19Please, I'll print this out and get a metal machine while you search them, okay?
03:24I love it here.
03:25You know, I feel like we're all family.
03:27Everybody has each other's bag, you know, when we need it.
03:30But you have to mean business every day when you come through the door.
03:34You gotta mean what you say and say what you mean.
03:36Well, what's on that money?
03:37Let me give you a little love on you.
03:39You smoked a lot?
03:43You been up for three days.
03:45Oh, Lord.
03:46Glad I'm getting off at six.
03:50I'm pretty much everywhere down here.
03:52There's no specific job that we do down here.
03:54We do a little bit of everything.
03:56But booking is where it all begins.
03:58It's where it all begins.
04:00You come through that gate, and it goes from there.
04:03And we deal with all type of people.
04:05You know, misdemeanors to felonies to we've gotten murderers.
04:10Some of everything comes through that door.
04:19At booking, repeat offender James Larabelle faces processing once again,
04:23this time on a range of new charges.
04:26At 9.30 this morning, they pulled me over for no blinker.
04:30And my license is suspended, so I gave them a probable call.
04:34They searched me.
04:35Searched a ride.
04:36My blood pressure was stroke-level.
04:38So I went to the hospital.
04:39And when I got back, they tended to tell me that they're going to charge me
04:42with a dangerous weapon and possession of a controlled substance
04:47that they found in the back of the car park.
04:50And supposedly, I just put in there, leaving the hospital.
04:54That's crazy, dude.
04:56So can you read that and sign it for me?
04:59That's this property, right?
05:01All right.
05:02It's ready to be searched.
05:03After booking, every arrestee goes through a full strip search
05:07to make sure no contraband, such as weapons or narcotics,
05:10make it inside the facility.
05:12You take all their belongings, jewelry, cell phones, hair ties,
05:15because when we search them, we search everything.
05:18Turn around anyway.
05:20Hands up.
05:21Squat in the car.
05:25I usually give them at least eight hours to see if they can bond up.
05:28I make sure they have the phone calls,
05:30at least some type of contact before we just send them to population.
05:34Inmate Larabelle is put in a holding cell
05:37while he waits for a judge to determine
05:39if he is eligible for bail.
05:40I've been doing time since I was 17.
05:43But I'll be honest, though.
05:45This is the first time I've ever been locked up.
05:47First of the that I didn't do.
05:49You know what I mean?
05:50Like, honestly.
05:51This is like the 10th time they pulled me over trying to find something
05:54and they never find that, so now they pinned something on me.
06:00I'm familiar with a lot of people that have come through here.
06:03You know, I don't let the charges that they have
06:07keep me from treating everyone the same.
06:10We're all human.
06:11You know, and I do let them know just because they made
06:13the decision that they made outside there to come here,
06:16it doesn't take away from who they are as a person.
06:19You know, it could be any of us.
06:21You know, just one mistake could have us in that same predicament.
06:28Excuse me, just a moment.
06:30Lee County Jail, how can I help?
06:36I'm going on 26 years of being in law enforcement.
06:40I'm very proud to be from Lee County.
06:43My family moved here in the 1800s.
06:46I think in 1832 is when my, I don't know how many grandfathers
06:50that would be back moved to this county,
06:52so it's a very special place to me.
06:54It's nowhere else just like it.
06:58Hey, sir, how are you?
06:59How are you?
06:59You doing all right today?
07:01Good, good, good, good.
07:02Sheriff Randy Atkinson and Warden Jerry Horn
07:05are making their daily rounds through the jail.
07:09How are you?
07:09You doing all right today?
07:10Yes, sir.
07:11How are you?
07:11Good, good, good.
07:12You doing all right today, Sheriff?
07:13Good, good, buddy, good.
07:16Being a sheriff in a smaller community,
07:18well, I would say I know the majority of the people in the county,
07:21and that makes it a little bit more unique
07:23in serving the citizens as you know who you serve.
07:26How are you serving?
07:27Good, sir.
07:27You doing all right today?
07:27Good, good, good.
07:29And you see people that, you know, you grew up with
07:31or you went to school with.
07:34You know, it's a revolving door.
07:35Yeah, we deal with 20% of the people 80% of the time.
07:40Good morning, guys.
07:41Good morning.
07:42Everybody enjoying the food?
07:43Yes, sir.
07:44It could be worse, huh?
07:45It could be worse.
07:46Huh?
07:48Inmates in Lee County Jail
07:49are housed in dorm-style units known as zones.
07:53Each zone holds multiple bunks,
07:55shared bathrooms, and a common area.
07:58We rode the same school,
07:59but, you know, a lot of us grew up together,
08:01a lot of family, man.
08:02A lot of us, we all just trying to make it out.
08:04That's all we try to do, make it out.
08:07Most of the people that's in here
08:08is because of the addiction of meth.
08:11You doing all right?
08:12I didn't even see you over there.
08:1326 months, man.
08:1426.
08:15Yeah, I'm ready to go.
08:16All right.
08:17Well, they working on your case.
08:19I was right.
08:19They are.
08:20All right.
08:21I'm just a regular old country boy
08:23that, you know, I speak my mind
08:25and I'll stand up for what's right
08:27and try to let people know that,
08:29hey, I'm here to help you,
08:30but I'm not going to tell you what you want to hear.
08:33I'm going to tell you what you need to hear.
08:35Y'all know what to do, know what not to do, okay?
08:37Yes, sir.
08:37You got to have a passion to want to help people.
08:39That's what my passion was.
08:41And I will always say the good Lord guided me
08:43into doing this job.
08:45And I mean, you in it long enough,
08:46you have those stories of people you see
08:48that tells you how much they appreciate
08:50that you're being, you know,
08:51even hard on them
08:52and trying to change your life.
08:54You know, that's the rewarding part
08:55of law enforcement to me.
08:57Y'all take care.
09:13Among the crowded bunch
09:15is inmate Tamontez Gill,
09:17who is no stranger to Leek County Jail.
09:19I've been here about five sometimes.
09:21The hardest part about it
09:22is just not being seen in the family.
09:24Yes, sir.
09:27What are your charges?
09:29I got caught selling drugs.
09:30I ain't no jail taking a plea.
09:31So I do about a year.
09:34One more, I bet you don't.
09:35I'm known for being in a lot of shooting,
09:39fights, but I don't start on them.
09:41I'm more of the type of the finish.
09:44Inmate Gill must remain housed
09:46at the Leek County Jail
09:47until he is transferred to prison.
09:49Hey, you chief?
09:53Hey, Mr. Wayne.
09:54How you doing?
09:55It's fine, ma'am.
09:56How are you?
09:56Good, good.
09:56I'm all right.
10:07We have five housing units for males,
10:11and we also have one housing unit for females.
10:14As of yesterday morning,
10:16we have 119 male inmates
10:18and 18 females.
10:20The zones themselves
10:21do not have an assigned officer,
10:23so the best way
10:25to monitor the zones
10:27is with our camera system.
10:29Officers can monitor cameras
10:31from several locations
10:32throughout the jail.
10:58Officers rush into zone B-15
11:00after a brawl breaks out
11:02among the inmates.
11:03Everything good?
11:04Who's on top?
11:05Nobody.
11:06You just ran around.
11:07You just ran around.
11:08You just ran around.
11:08You just ran around.
11:09You just ran around.
11:10You just ran around.
11:10You just ran around.
11:11Hey, who you doing?
11:13What's going on up in here,
11:14first of all?
11:16Now, we just ran around.
11:17Now, we don't play around like this.
11:19Yes, ma'am.
11:20Take that off your head.
11:21Officers allege
11:22that inmate Gil
11:23is one of the parties involved.
11:25Take it off your head.
11:26No, f*** off.
11:27I'm going to do something
11:28to that damn boy.
11:29Uh-uh, I'm going to do something
11:31to that damn boy.
11:31All right.
11:31You just ran around.
11:34Calm down.
11:35Calm down.
11:36I'm good.
11:37I told you to f***ing stop playing.
11:38I told you to b***h
11:40to f***ing stop playing.
11:41I'm going to be a bitch.
11:42Oh, nice if you can't hold up to me.
11:45Cheers the f*** out.
11:48Both inmates are separated
11:50and sent to solitary confinement,
11:52giving them time to cool off
11:54while jail officials investigate
11:55what started the fight.
11:56Hey!
12:16Inmate Gil waits to see the nurse
12:18after spending the night
12:19in a holding tank
12:20for fighting with inmate Meredith.
12:23Lee County Jail.
12:24How can I help you?
12:25He resisted a little bit.
12:27Last night,
12:28um, didn't,
12:29didn't walk the block completely,
12:30so we had to encourage him
12:32to come on in.
12:33Oh, ho, ho, ho.
12:35That, that whole thing
12:36hurt me.
12:37I'll beat on them all night
12:38telling me,
12:39please let me out.
12:40Please take me back to the other side.
12:42She said,
12:43you right where you need to be tonight.
12:45They don't play down here.
12:47Get out of line,
12:47they're going to put you in line.
12:49This is all down here.
12:50They're going to want to eat this?
12:51No, they're going to eat it.
12:52They're going to mace you
12:53and put you in the hole
12:54for, for a couple days or something.
12:57It looks pretty swollen.
12:58Yeah, that's my knuckle.
13:01That ain't really hurting bad,
13:02but it hurt.
13:04What were you guys beeping on?
13:07Not really.
13:08No, I said,
13:08we were just having
13:09a several-hour conversation.
13:10We just got mad.
13:12Yo, Gil.
13:15Two, six,
13:16central,
13:1611, 11, 11, 11.
13:18While inmate Gil
13:19waits to see the nurse,
13:21inmate Meredith
13:21remains in isolation,
13:24waiting to learn
13:25whether he'll face
13:25disciplinary action
13:26for his part in the fight.
13:29We were chilling,
13:30playing dominoes,
13:31and we were just,
13:32you know,
13:32chilling at the table,
13:33and he said something
13:35about my homeboy,
13:35and he got shot in the back,
13:36and he mentioned it,
13:38and that made me mad,
13:39so I had,
13:40went with my first mind,
13:41I said,
13:41I'm not going to take
13:42that level of disrespect,
13:43so I just did it.
13:46If you let one person
13:47disrespect you,
13:48the next person
13:48feel like he got
13:49the door,
13:49they can disrespect you.
13:51He really just young
13:52and hot,
13:53and he can't take it,
13:54like,
13:55when somebody talk to him,
13:56and they tell him the truth,
13:57he can't take it.
13:59I mean, him,
14:00like, we cool
14:00on the outside,
14:02and we don't allow
14:03street beef
14:03when we lock there,
14:04because street beef
14:05ain't got nothing to do
14:06with when we lock there.
14:07If you got a part
14:08with somebody
14:08from the outside,
14:10y'all sit there
14:11when y'all get out.
14:14He's a cool dude,
14:15it's just,
14:15you know,
14:16like,
14:16I know him,
14:16though,
14:17he's going with my cousin,
14:18so,
14:18I mean,
14:19you acting hard
14:19for these people,
14:20man,
14:20I know you personal,
14:22like,
14:22don't do that,
14:23bro.
14:23I really,
14:24I really hated
14:25that it,
14:25it,
14:26it,
14:26it happened like that,
14:28but,
14:29it either me or you,
14:32so,
14:32I really react to all,
14:34I ain't,
14:34I ain't really,
14:35just try to,
14:36just fight him,
14:36though.
14:38I haven't been in,
14:38like,
14:3910,
14:3912 fights since I've been here,
14:40I've been here a whole year,
14:42no,
14:42I'm just ready to do my time,
14:43go home.
14:44What are you charging?
14:45Well,
14:45I'm ready to stop.
14:46Are you worried that this might
14:48incur more charges for you this way?
14:50Yeah,
14:51sometimes,
14:51like,
14:52I kiss myself,
14:53being a little angry,
14:54a little hothead,
14:55like,
14:55I'm 21 years old,
14:57but,
14:57I got a lot of growing up to do.
14:59Yeah.
15:00Yeah.
15:01Yeah.
15:01Yeah.
15:04Yeah.
15:04Yeah.
15:06Yeah.
15:09Yeah.
15:10Yeah.
15:24James Larabelle has spent the night in a holding cell,
15:26trying to make bail.
15:28You talked to the judge already?
15:30Yes.
15:30The bond's $61,000.
15:34I don't even know why it's that high,
15:36to be honest with you.
15:37I don't even know what it is on each charge.
15:41I'm still just in the awe,
15:43you know what I mean?
15:43I don't have $6,000 to get out,
15:46you know?
15:46It's just outrageous.
15:48Okay.
15:49In order to bail out,
15:50an arrestee must pay 10% of the bail amount
15:53to a bondsman
15:54who will then guarantee
15:55the full bail to the court.
15:58Where you going, man?
16:00What are you doing, Larabelle?
16:02All right now, Ms. Williams.
16:04Hey, y'all taking care of Ms. Williams.
16:09That's our favorite officer right there,
16:11Ms. Williams.
16:13I asked to come over here to 30
16:14because it's a lot calmer.
16:16Inmate Larabelle has been assigned
16:17to Zone B30,
16:19one of the jail's quieter units
16:21reserved for older inmates.
16:22I've been to 15
16:23and all that over there
16:24and it's just a bulls**t.
16:29A little younger crowd
16:31that always want to fight
16:32or start s**t over nothing.
16:34You know what I mean?
16:34If they don't like you,
16:35they're going to get you
16:37one way or another.
16:46We had a fight last night at B-15.
16:48DeMontis Gill
16:49and DeJuan Meredith.
16:50Warden Jerry Horn,
16:51Jail Administrator Michael Sistrunk
16:54and Investigator Austin McCraney
16:55are reviewing the inmate fight
16:57between inmates Gill and Meredith.
16:59Nobody taken to the emergency room?
17:01No, sir.
17:02They have been cleared by medical.
17:03The outcome of the investigation
17:05will reveal whether the altercation
17:07warrants extra charges
17:08against either inmate,
17:10anything from disorderly conduct
17:11to assault,
17:12which could add an additional
17:14six months to their sentences.
17:15This is about the beginning
17:17when it started to happen last night,
17:19both at the table.
17:20DeJuan is sitting on the table
17:21and you can see him
17:22kind of arguing back and forth.
17:24DeMontis is there
17:25and here in just a minute
17:26he's going to try to walk away
17:28from the situation.
17:28He's going to go stand by the wall
17:31and then Meredith follows him
17:32over there.
17:36They've done a lot of arguing back then.
17:37There was the first punch.
17:40One thing you've got to watch for
17:41in these situations
17:42is these guys start kicking and stomping
17:44somebody in the head
17:44while they're down on the ground.
17:46If it's bad enough,
17:47more than likely it'll be
17:48assault charges
17:49for one or both.
17:57You can see him
17:58kind of arguing back and forth.
18:01There was the first punch thrown.
18:05So Meredith is definitely
18:06the aggressor.
18:07Yes, he really seems
18:08to be the aggressor this time.
18:10Warden Jerry Horn
18:11and his investigative team
18:12continue reviewing security footage
18:14from the previous night's fight.
18:17Depending on their findings,
18:18one or both inmates
18:20could see new charges added.
18:21Nobody else gets involved.
18:23The rest of the zone,
18:24it looks like they let it go on
18:25for a minute
18:25and then they try to break it up.
18:26A couple of other guys
18:27are going to reach in
18:28and kind of pull them apart.
18:31Is this Jomo?
18:32Yeah, that's Jomo Madison.
18:33He's one of our older guys in there.
18:34He was one of the ones
18:36trying to break it apart,
18:37separate them.
18:38During the whole fight,
18:39I didn't see anybody
18:40pick up any objects
18:41hitting anybody.
18:42I didn't see anybody kicking,
18:44kneeing.
18:45Seemed like they were just
18:46getting a whole lot
18:46out of their system.
18:47Meredith being the aggressor
18:48was placed in lockdown.
18:50DeMontes was placed
18:51in a holding tank last night
18:52just to give them time
18:52to calm down.
18:53He's back in the zone
18:54this morning?
18:55Yeah.
18:55Okay.
18:56We'll leave Meredith
18:57in lockdown for like five days.
19:00This was one of the
19:01more meaker fights
19:02that I've seen
19:03since I've been here.
19:05If we were to saw
19:06someone run in
19:07and stomp somebody
19:08or kick somebody
19:10or a weapon,
19:11at that point,
19:11it could be turned
19:12into an aggravated
19:13assault-type situation.
19:16This was two guys
19:17just trying to settle
19:18their differences
19:18as far as I'm concerned.
19:20The aggressor's going to
19:21spend about five days
19:22in lockdown.
19:23That's 22 hours a day
19:24locked up.
19:25They come out
19:26for a shower once a day
19:28and they get a yard
19:29an hour a day.
19:30So that's isolation.
19:32That'll work on anybody.
19:35Isolation cells
19:36are smaller than
19:37the housing zones
19:38and inmates inside
19:39lose access to TVs,
19:41books,
19:41and other resources,
19:43making their stay
19:44significantly more difficult.
20:01Hello, ladies.
20:03Hello.
20:04What are y'all
20:04fixing up in here?
20:05Well, I suppose
20:06we're making something
20:07for real.
20:08So, come on over.
20:10So, I got some chili
20:12in the microwave.
20:14I'm letting it cook's on.
20:16Sheriff Randy Atkinson
20:18checks in on the facility's
20:19only female zone.
20:21They gonna feed
20:22everybody in here?
20:23I mean, I be trying
20:24to do it with everybody
20:25in the zone,
20:26even the ones
20:27that don't make
20:28commissaries,
20:29but everybody
20:30don't like
20:30to participate in the zone.
20:32Yeah.
20:33Inmates can purchase
20:34snacks and other essentials
20:35using money
20:36from their jail accounts,
20:38often funded by friends
20:39or family on the outside.
20:42Stuff that you can make
20:43is just better?
20:44To me, yeah.
20:45Yeah.
20:46Everybody in the kitchen
20:47don't know what to do.
20:48It's like being close to home.
20:50So, it makes me feel close to home.
20:55Clarissa Brown is one of the few inmates here
20:57who's seen life
20:58from both sides of the bars.
21:00I've been working
21:01in corrections for 15 years.
21:03While I was a corrections officer,
21:05I had dealings
21:07with a former inmate.
21:09That's why I'm incarcerated.
21:11In Mississippi,
21:13any correctional employee
21:14who engages
21:15in a sexual relationship
21:16with an inmate
21:17commits a felony,
21:18punishable by up to five years
21:20in prison.
21:20The inmate himself,
21:22he pretty much told
21:23what happened,
21:24how it happened,
21:25or however it happened.
21:27So, I'll have to go to prison
21:29for the terms
21:30of a year and a day.
21:35Why do you put him
21:36in the bathroom?
21:37That makes the cracks me.
21:39Don't panic
21:40when we stick him
21:41in the microwave, okay?
21:42Just don't panic.
21:45That's why I don't carry
21:46my microwave.
21:46No!
21:48What other stuff
21:49besides food do y'all do?
21:51We play cards.
21:53Love playing space.
21:55I actually play basketball.
21:56I watch football.
21:57Football Sundays.
22:00I pretty much
22:00don't want to tell anybody
22:01what's going to go on
22:03with my situation
22:04because of the simple fact
22:05of who I am.
22:06Once was an officer,
22:07then I kind of worked
22:08my way up the chain
22:09to a deputy warden,
22:10so that's pretty big.
22:11Like, I had a whole career.
22:13Yeah, so.
22:15I mean, I've walked
22:16that path of dignity
22:17all my life.
22:18Never had a speeding ticket,
22:19never drank,
22:20never smoked.
22:21I'm a family-oriented woman,
22:23so how could this
22:25possibly have happened?
22:27I replay it in my mind
22:28hundreds and hundreds
22:30and hundreds
22:31and hundreds of times,
22:32and I just come to
22:33realization,
22:34I'm only human.
22:36We all human.
22:38We make mistakes.
22:39So I've prayed about it.
22:42I'm going to put this
22:43under my belt
22:44and let this be my past
22:45because I've already
22:46been forgiven
22:46for what I've done.
22:48Now it's just me
22:49moving forward
22:49and holding myself accountable.
22:55Inmate Brown
22:56will remain housed
22:57at the jail
22:57as she waits
22:58to be transferred
22:59to prison
22:59to serve out
23:00her sins.
23:08How about a prayer call?
23:10Yeah, prayer call.
23:12Tempting on the song
23:13or prayer call?
23:13Oh.
23:14How about your hands
23:15and prayers?
23:16Lord,
23:17we ask that you
23:18protect us
23:19from any harm.
23:21Anything that's
23:22not of you,
23:23Father,
23:23we ask that you
23:24remove it from this zone.
23:25Father,
23:26help us come together
23:27in one mind,
23:28one body,
23:28and one spirit.
23:29In Jesus' name
23:30we pray.
23:30Amen.
23:31Amen.
23:32We'll pray for all
23:33this time.
23:36I'm 51 years old now.
23:39Most of these guys
23:40in the zone
23:41is my kids' age.
23:44And they went
23:45through the same thing
23:46my kids went through
23:47because my children
23:49didn't have a father
23:50because I was in
23:51and out of jail
23:52all my life.
23:53It's just a vicious
23:55siphon.
23:55You're repeating
23:56itself.
23:58And I
23:59want to be there
24:00for my kids.
24:01I had
24:02three sons
24:03in here with me.
24:05They are, man.
24:06And that's
24:07why I turned to God.
24:09He's on the main line.
24:12Tell him what you want.
24:15I don't want to get out of here
24:17and keep doing
24:17the same thing.
24:19So I want these guys
24:21to see
24:21me as an elder.
24:24Me to teach them
24:25how to get out
24:26and not
24:27do what I did.
24:29You know,
24:30you'll be back
24:31if you don't change a life.
24:48Out of love
24:49to be back home.
24:51That's what they
24:51pussing about.
24:52They didn't act
24:54right on the yards.
24:55And I'm a mom
24:56so sometimes
24:57we got to get
24:57their mom old
24:58like something they want.
25:00So
25:00they leave you
25:01fine for a little while.
25:08Something about to happen.
25:11Security cameras
25:12pick up rising tensions
25:13in the women's yard,
25:15prompting officers
25:16Williams and Massey
25:17to respond.
25:38Shut it down.
25:38We're going to take y'all
25:39back in.
25:54Officers Williams
25:55and Massey
25:55work to deescalate
25:57a fight
25:57between two inmates.
25:58Trying to talk
25:58to everybody
25:59like they're kids.
26:00Trying to tell everybody
26:00what they're doing.
26:01See, that's the problem.
26:02She's cussly,
26:03bringing her cuss down.
26:04Memory didn't even
26:05get offended by the cuss.
26:07But my thing is,
26:08why she get offended?
26:09And you want to talk
26:10cuss like I ain't hear you,
26:11be direct,
26:12be a woman,
26:13say what the cuss
26:14you got to say to me
26:15because you're
26:15talking about me.
26:17We're going to have
26:18to drop this down
26:18or y'all going to have
26:19to go in
26:20and y'all going to be
26:20separated.
26:21Y'all be isolated.
26:21The only reason
26:22I brought you out
26:23was because your mama
26:24called.
26:25So I'm going to need
26:25you to chill
26:26because it's obvious
26:27you really wanted
26:27to come outside
26:28if your mama
26:28called me to bring
26:29you out there.
26:30I'm through with it.
26:31At the end of the day,
26:32we women
26:33and we're going to
26:33conduct ourselves
26:34as women.
26:35Okay?
26:36Let's enjoy the sunshine.
26:38Isha got the ball
26:39in her hand,
26:39ready to shoot a shot.
26:40Go ahead, Isha.
26:41And let's have
26:42a good day, okay?
26:43Let me see you.
26:44I'm going to try.
26:46I'm going to try.
26:48I can't.
26:51Y'all that's what I want.
26:52Be happy.
26:53I can't enjoy this.
26:54I really do apologize.
26:55It is not me.
26:56It's not me at all.
26:58It's just,
26:59the devil's name
27:00hella beast.
27:02Y'all have a good day.
27:03Enjoy this sunshine.
27:04You're going to eat
27:05in a few minutes, okay?
27:16This is the department's
27:18evidence locker.
27:19Every drug case
27:20that comes through
27:20Leak County,
27:21the drugs will
27:22eventually be in here.
27:24So all of this
27:24is methamphetamine.
27:26Methamphetamine is
27:27something that we
27:28struggle with
27:29in this county.
27:30We have a lot of users,
27:32a lot of sellers.
27:33Meth-related crimes
27:35account for nearly
27:3640% of all bookings
27:37at Leak County Jail.
27:39One of our
27:40pretty good busts,
27:41this guy was selling
27:42and we ended up
27:43eventually getting
27:45a search warrant
27:45on his place
27:46and ended up
27:47finding his stash.
27:48And a lot of this dope
27:49actually came from
27:51this dealer.
27:52The meth is a big
27:53problem because
27:54it leads to so many
27:56other things
27:56because a lot of people
27:58that get high on meth,
27:59they tend to do things
28:00that they normally
28:00wouldn't do.
28:01Steal, rape,
28:03they have wrecks,
28:04same thing as
28:05drinking and driving.
28:06Once they get hooked on it,
28:08they're chasing that
28:09next high.
28:21Rulers should not
28:22crave alcohol,
28:23for if they drink,
28:24they may forget the law.
28:26Alcohol is for the dying
28:27and wine for those
28:28in bitter distress.
28:29Let them drink
28:30to forget their poverty
28:31and remember their
28:31troubles no more.
28:35I got charged with
28:36receiving stolen property,
28:38and possession of
28:39a controlled substance.
28:40I was on
28:42methamphetamine.
28:45The methamphetamine,
28:47you know,
28:48it's like it's a world
28:50and you're stuck in it.
28:52When you're on those drugs
28:53and they make you feel good,
28:55you start thinking,
28:56I need them,
28:57I want them,
28:58I want them more.
28:59It's like the devil
29:00inside your head
29:00telling you,
29:01you ain't high enough.
29:05Jill, it's been hard.
29:07I don't have any kids,
29:08but it gets really emotional
29:10missing your family.
29:11I miss my niece.
29:13I miss my grandma.
29:14My grandma's birthday
29:15was on the 14th,
29:17you know,
29:18so that was hard
29:19because I wanted
29:20to be with her.
29:22And when I first came in,
29:24I was coming down
29:25off of the high
29:27and it took me
29:28about two weeks
29:29to call my grandma.
29:30You know,
29:31my grandma was like,
29:32no, you know,
29:33she'll never be ashamed of me.
29:34She loves me
29:35and jail saves people.
29:36And this jail saved me.
29:39Inmate of Mariana Griffin,
29:41who's taken the role
29:42of the Zone's
29:43spiritual ambassador,
29:44offers words of inspiration
29:46to the other inmates.
29:47This is a bag of prayers.
29:49It's a personal message
29:50from God
29:50when you pick one.
29:51And this one says,
29:55Father,
29:55we long for the day
29:56when we are released
29:57from our present struggles
29:58to enjoy life with you
29:59and in a new creation forever.
30:01Strengthen our faith
30:01as we begin to experience
30:03eternal joy,
30:03even now,
30:04in Jesus' name.
30:05Amen.
30:05Amen.
30:07That's how I get by.
30:09My aunt today says,
30:10Father,
30:10we come to you
30:11with praise and adoration.
30:13Thank you for your amazing
30:14love and care for us.
30:15May our lives be
30:16a never-ending prayer.
30:17of gratitude to you.
30:18Amen.
30:20It just is a lifting,
30:21knowing that you're
30:21always cared for in love.
30:22And you can always
30:23turn to God.
30:25You tend to find
30:26more God in here.
30:27Thank you, Mary.
30:28You are very welcome.
30:29Yes, everybody.
30:44With drug addiction
30:46gripping the county,
30:47the jail works just as hard
30:48to keep drugs
30:49out of the facility
30:51as deputies do
30:52to keep them
30:52off the streets.
30:54All right,
30:54what we're going to do,
30:55we're going to do a shakedown,
30:56just look around a little bit,
30:57see if we can find
30:58any of the contraband.
30:59When we go in,
30:59we're going to tell everybody
31:00to stand by the racks.
31:01We're not going to put them
31:02on the floor this time.
31:03We're going to get them
31:03to stand by the racks.
31:05We're going to pat them down,
31:07search the racks,
31:08look under the mats,
31:08look in the drawers.
31:10Should be an easy one today.
31:12That's it.
31:12All right, let's roll, then.
31:15Everybody knows
31:16you get contraband
31:17in the prison
31:18and then you've got trouble.
31:19So we do a shakedown
31:21just to be seen out here
31:22and that usually keeps it down.
31:25Unannounced shakedowns
31:26reduce the chances
31:27of concealed weapons
31:28or drugs being brought inside
31:29and reinforce the jail's security
31:32from the inside out.
31:34Get up and stand by your racks.
31:35Get up.
31:36Get up.
31:37Get up.
31:37By your racks.
31:39Everybody stand up
31:40by your racks.
31:40Come on, get up.
31:41Get up.
31:42Get up.
31:44Come on, get up.
31:58Warden.
32:00They've dug the crack there.
32:02Did what?
32:04The holes are dug out.
32:06Show me.
32:07Show me.
32:09They've been quite busy, haven't they?
32:11They have.
32:14They've started there.
32:17Someone from the outside wall
32:18could be able
32:19to pass something through.
32:20In a county crippled
32:21by meth addiction,
32:22it's critical that officers
32:23seal every hole
32:24or vulnerability
32:25to prevent the drug
32:26from making its way
32:27into the jail.
32:29They get a little
32:30small toothbrushes
32:31and they can struggle
32:31on the concrete
32:32and get a sharp point
32:33on one end of it
32:33and just dig that mortar.
32:35Dig whatever's in there.
32:36It takes time,
32:37but they'll do it.
32:39We'll just put some liquid nail
32:40in the crack there
32:41and fill it.
32:51What is this?
32:58Is that a coffee roll, Chester?
32:59What's this?
33:01This is coffee rolls.
33:04They'll take paper
33:05and they'll soak it in coffee,
33:06light it,
33:07and then they smoke it.
33:09Put your hands up
33:10on the wall for me.
33:30Go blue.
33:33Mr. Horn,
33:35when I was searching for him,
33:37he had a top
33:39with some pills
33:40in front of his jacket.
33:45What is that, Morton?
33:47Looks like eggs pills to me.
33:49Ecstasy pills.
33:55What is that, Morton?
33:57Looks like eggs pills to me.
33:59Ecstasy pills.
34:01While conducting a pat-down,
34:03an officer uncovers
34:04a concealed vial of pills
34:06tucked inside
34:06the inmate's jumpsuit.
34:08It was in the front pocket.
34:09He just got here.
34:10His dice is not as
34:10.
34:13No, sir.
34:14It was right here in the front pocket.
34:16What do you say?
34:17I don't know.
34:17It was in the joint.
34:18It was in the front pocket.
34:21Everything get washed
34:22right here in the front pocket.
34:23Before you get put on,
34:24everything get washed.
34:25I didn't put that in, though, sir.
34:29That's all.
34:30I didn't put that in.
34:30Turn around.
34:31Put your hands up.
34:32Turn around.
34:35He actually said
34:37that they were already
34:37in the pocket
34:38of the pair of coveralls
34:40that he was issued.
34:42Impossible.
34:44Impossible.
34:45Yeah, all the coveralls
34:46or jumpsuits
34:47or some of them's pants
34:49and tops,
34:49they all go through the wash
34:50before they reissue
34:52to another inmate.
34:53So that would not have
34:54been in a pocket.
34:55Even though you do
34:56a full search
34:57whenever they come in,
34:58a small item like this
34:59can easily be put in places
35:01that you can't see,
35:02males and females.
35:03So sometimes
35:04something like that
35:05could be held pretty tight.
35:07And you wouldn't
35:08necessarily find that
35:10whenever you did
35:10your search.
35:14We're good, guys.
35:16Right now,
35:17he's going to go
35:18to the segregation unit
35:19until this investigation
35:20gets started.
35:21And we're going to turn
35:23this over to
35:23Investigator McGraney
35:24to refer charges on him.
35:27As part of the investigation,
35:28the confiscated pills
35:30will be sent
35:30to the crime lab
35:31for narcotics testing.
35:33He'll probably be charged
35:34with contraband
35:35in a prison,
35:36which it'd be 36 months,
35:37it could be 60 months.
35:56Save you half of it, Doug.
35:58You hungry every morning?
36:01How's it been going?
36:02It's been going.
36:03Just sleeping.
36:05It's jail, I guess.
36:07It does suck.
36:09Inmate Larabel
36:10is still waiting
36:11for his preliminary hearing,
36:12where he'll learn
36:13more details
36:13about the charges
36:14against him.
36:15I haven't heard
36:15anything at all
36:16about what's going
36:16to happen to him yet.
36:18My main concern
36:18is what they're
36:19going to do to me now,
36:21you know?
36:22Stuff they have on me
36:22is not even right.
36:24You know what I mean?
36:24They got it all wrong,
36:25but I guess
36:27that's everybody
36:27in here, too, though.
36:29Everybody in here
36:30didn't do it, you know?
36:40You got a chip bag
36:41in your room.
36:42You got a chip bag
36:44in your room.
36:50So awesome, right?
36:52Yeah.
36:57What's this for?
36:58It's just something
36:59to do to be there.
37:00Last time I was here,
37:02I actually took him home
37:03and used him
37:03as my Christmas ornament.
37:08Morning, ladies.
37:10Morning, ladies.
37:11Miss Brown!
37:13Take it up.
37:15Hey, that's morning,
37:16ladies and gentlemen.
37:17We're going to be glad.
37:18Hallelujah.
37:19Inmate Clarissa Brown
37:20is being moved
37:21to state prison,
37:22where she will serve out
37:24the remainder
37:24of her sentence.
37:26Keep her safe
37:27and throw it back
37:28onto her kids'
37:29and family work.
37:29Tears of joy
37:31sad at the same time
37:33because I know
37:34that the people
37:35that I came in with,
37:36you know,
37:37I'm not going
37:38to see them again.
37:39But it's a relief
37:41to know that
37:41I'm leaving Lee County
37:42so I can go ahead
37:44and finish my sentence
37:44in prison.
37:45Bye, y'all.
37:46Take care, y'all.
37:47Be safe.
37:48Before transferring
37:49to state prison,
37:51all inmates must change
37:52out of their jumpsuits
37:53and into their
37:54personal clothing.
37:55So I put on
37:55frame clothes?
37:56Yeah.
37:57Okay.
37:59No, look at this.
38:01All right, my.
38:06Inmate Gil
38:06is also being
38:07transported
38:08to state prison.
38:09Hold it down,
38:11hold your head up, dude.
38:15You nervous,
38:15you know what I mean?
38:19It ain't really
38:20nothing to be nervous about.
38:21All things
38:21it is down and up.
38:23You just locked
38:23them with a lot
38:24of different forms.
38:25You're on the zone
38:26with a lot of forms
38:26with worse charges
38:28than you.
38:28You're on that force
38:29with murder charges,
38:30rape charges,
38:31kittin' their charge,
38:32all that.
38:33You just know
38:34you in prison.
38:35That's the only thing.
38:39It's been over
38:40two months
38:40since I've worn
38:42outside clothes,
38:43and I'm gonna put it
38:43like that, yeah.
38:45So I'm excited
38:46and a little nervous
38:47at the same time.
38:48I've always been
38:49an officer, you know,
38:51walking a straight path,
38:52but I'm going
38:54to prison now,
38:54so now I have
38:55to follow the rules
38:57and regulations
38:57and the policies.
38:59While some inmates
39:00await their transfer,
39:02inmate Meredith
39:03remains in isolation,
39:04a consequence
39:05of initiating
39:06the fight
39:07with inmate Gil.
39:08I can't lie.
39:10I'm a strong person,
39:11but being up in jail,
39:12it hurt, man.
39:14It hurt,
39:14especially being
39:15away from your family.
39:17You know,
39:18I just want to change,
39:19get a job,
39:20show my mama
39:21I can do something better.
39:22I don't care
39:23how hard these people
39:24try to act
39:25in that free world,
39:26get locked up in jail,
39:27man,
39:27it's going to
39:29hurt you.
39:29You're going to
39:30start trying
39:30to do right
39:31in life.
39:44How about
39:45a gospel track?
39:47Jesus Logan,
39:48man.
39:49How you doing, boss?
39:50A gospel track?
39:51Yes, sir.
39:52All right.
39:52There you go.
39:54We want to make
39:55a difference
39:55in people's lives.
39:56We don't want
39:57to just put them
39:57in jail.
39:59It's a matter
39:59of giving them
40:00second chances,
40:01you know.
40:06It's really
40:06a rehabilitation
40:07place, man.
40:08We really in here
40:09is get help.
40:10You get yourself
40:10together,
40:11get your mind
40:12together,
40:12and you get
40:13closer to the Lord,
40:14man.
40:15I've been on
40:16the bad end
40:16of the stick
40:17a long time,
40:17and I done
40:18worked my way
40:18with good graces
40:19with these folks.
40:20They ain't did
40:21nothing to try
40:21to help me.
40:21They ain't gonna do
40:22nothing to try
40:22to help me.
40:24Let's go,
40:24Lord, to prayer.
40:25Thank you, guys,
40:26that there's not
40:26a person in you
40:27that you didn't create
40:28and that you don't
40:29love and that you
40:30didn't die for.
40:37I've been in
40:37this business
40:38for over 26 years,
40:40and I've seen
40:41it every way
40:42you can see
40:42as far as changing
40:44somebody that
40:44is incarcerated.
40:45The most important
40:47thing is change
40:47somebody's heart,
40:49showing them
40:49a little bit
40:50of compassion
40:51and empathy
40:52sometimes.
40:53We thank you,
40:54Lord,
40:54for Leap County,
40:55and we pray
40:56in Jesus' name
40:56that everybody's
40:57right in here.
40:58Amen.
40:59We need to rely
41:00on people
41:00to guide us
41:01to recovery,
41:03but to stay recovered
41:04and stay out of it.
41:06You need Jesus Christ,
41:08your Lord and Savior.
41:10When you see
41:11that person
41:12somewhere down
41:13the road
41:13and they say,
41:14hey, what you did
41:15made a difference
41:15in my life.
41:16That helped me.
41:17That's the most rewarding
41:18part.
41:19I take a lot
41:20of pride in that.
