00:01Australian educational institutions are today scrambling to determine if any of the personal
00:07information of their students and staff have potentially been impacted by a global cyber
00:13security attack on learning management system Canvas, which is used by thousands of institutions
00:20across the world.
00:21The security breach of the cloud-based learning management system developed by American company
00:26Instructure occurred on Saturday.
00:28It's used by more than 9,000 institutions worldwide and is used to manage everything
00:34from courses, schedules and grading for students and staff.
00:39The impacts have already been felt across major universities here in Australia.
00:44In a statement, the University of Technology Sydney says that they were working with Instructure
00:49to confirm what data had been compromised and to fully understand the potential impacts,
00:55but do say that Canvas was operating as normal for its students and staff.
01:01Tasmania and TAFE have so far given the most comprehensive answer regarding the breach,
01:06making clear that they have been told by Canvas' parent company that some of their students
01:11and staff data may have potentially been accessed by a criminal third party.
01:16They do say that some personal information may have been compromised, but have been quick
01:22to say they do not believe it includes any government identifiers or critical financial information.
01:29The Tasmanian Department of Education also says they are so far unaware if the breach has impacted
01:35any of their public schools.
01:37The New South Wales Minister for Education has been contacted this morning to determine
01:41if any schools here in New South Wales have also been impacted, while Jason Clare has made
01:47clear that any institutions that may have been impacted by this cyber security attack should
01:53stay on the lookout for any future scams in the wake of the breach.
