00:18Welcome to Ridiculous, the ridiculously clever show where three teams of riddle solvers take
00:23on our devious riddle master. Hello, Henry. Hi, Rami. Now, you know, I always get nervous
00:29at this point because you always challenge me with something and I feel bamboozled,
00:33but I'm ready for you. It's coming. Here it comes. It's coming. Okay.
00:36I'm an imperfection that sounds like I can be found on every level of a building. What am I?
00:43A few nods over there. I think maybe some of the contestants have already got it, Rami. Have you got
00:47it?
00:47I feel like I know it. Okay, good. But I'm just going to, you know, make you wait for it.
00:52Shall we meet today's teams? Let's do it. Let's do it.
00:56Who's with us today? Hi, I'm James from Dalbiti and this is my friend Scott and he's from East
01:00Corbide. Hi, I'm Ryan and this is my friend Laura and we're from Manchester. Hi, I'm Ethan and this
01:06is my friend Dan and we're both from Sheffield. Super to have you all on the show. Now, not to
01:10steal
01:10your thunder, but I feel like I know the answer to the opening riddle of the show. Hit me with
01:15it.
01:15Okay, so the riddle is, I'm an imperfection that sounds like I can be found on every level of a
01:20building. What am I? Yes, you were nodding, Ethan and Dan. Does anybody else know it?
01:28Oh, okay. Go on then, I'll let, go on Ethan and Dan.
01:32Floor. Floor, of course it is. Yes. Floor, the right answer. And imperfection is a floor and of
01:37course, different levels of buildings are also called floors. You are flawless, riddle master,
01:41in my eyes. You're very kind. The image of perfection. Super way to start the show. Well
01:49let me tell you how this is going to work. You're going to face a series of riddles from
01:53Henry and in order to unlock each riddle, you'll first have to correctly answer three general
01:59knowledge questions from me. Now, in this opening round, questions are worth 25 pounds. Henry,
02:06how much are your riddles worth? Well, in this round, the riddles are the simplest ones you'll
02:09face. If you can get them right, they're worth a hundred pounds each, but these are the easiest,
02:13as I say, so you don't want to be getting these ones wrong.
02:14Flawless start to the game, hopefully for some of you, but we will be saying goodbye to one team
02:20at the end of this opening round. So from the offset, every single question is important to you.
02:28Are you ready for some general knowledge? Yes. Yes. Let's do it.
02:33Good luck, all of you. What is the name of the object that is struck with rackets in a game
02:39of
02:39badminton? Ryan and Laura. A shuttlecock. Correct.
02:45£25 to you. Which singer had a 1979 UK number one single with I Will Survive? Ryan and Laura.
02:56Gloria Gaynor. Correct. Ryan and Laura, you're already just one correct answer away from facing
03:01the riddle master. You seem a bit nervous by this prospect.
03:05Well, we'll see. Yes, here we go. Of the animals in the Chinese zodiac, which is the only one that
03:13is a bird?
03:15Ryan and Laura. It's the rooster. It is the rooster. Yes, very good. Okay, well, a clean sweep for Ryan
03:23and Laura.
03:25Now, we must say that there are three of you on your team today, so you may have an advantage.
03:29Yeah, sure. Your baby brain might take over. How far along are you? Seven months pregnant. I'm due in ten
03:37weeks' time.
03:37Wow. Okay, well, take a seat when you need it. Ryan, how did you two meet?
03:44We met through our local tennis club. Became firm friends very quickly and ended up being doubles partners.
03:51Yes. Really rubbish doubles partners. Yes.
03:53Generally at tennis, but it's always an experience, I think, when you play with us because we just laugh.
03:58Super stuff. Right. Great to have you on the show. You're about to face the riddle master. Good luck.
04:02But now, remember, you do have access to a clue, but you only get one throughout the whole show, so
04:07just use it wisely.
04:09Henry, over to you.
04:10Ryan and Laura, good luck. First riddle of the game.
04:12I'm where the sea sees sand, where waves reach the beach, and a mixed-up horse finds its form. What
04:20am I?
04:21I think I know this. Yeah, I think I know too.
04:24Yeah, because mixed-up horse would be shore, wouldn't it? Because that's an anagram of horse.
04:30Yes. And it's where the sea sees the sand, it's where the waves reach the beach. I think shore.
04:35Sure. Are you shore? Yes, I'm shore.
04:37Yeah, nice.
04:38We'll lock in shore.
04:39Sure. Sure.
04:40Sure.
04:43It's the right answer. Well done, shore. Yeah, of course. Yeah.
04:46Absolutely. And as you say, you were very shore because you worked out all the different bits of that riddle.
04:51Of course, the sea sees sand at the shore, the waves reach the beach at the shoreline, yeah?
04:56And of course, yeah, if you mix up the letters of horse, you get shore as well. Very well deduced.
05:02Very good. So, £100 to Ryan and Laura.
05:06And just to say, I know you said you're from Manchester. Ryan, it's not a Mancunian accent I'm picking up,
05:11just to be clear.
05:11No, I'm originally from Canada.
05:13Lovely. How long have you been over in the UK?
05:1518 years, last week.
05:17Do you feel British or do you still feel Canadian?
05:18I feel British.
05:20You do?
05:20Yeah, definitely.
05:21Marvellous.
05:22Yeah.
05:22Well, we're happy to have you. Super stuff. Right, let's keep playing.
05:25In human anatomy, the Hallux is otherwise known as the big what?
05:31Ryan and Laura.
05:32Big toe?
05:33It is the big toe.
05:35Was that a guess?
05:37Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
05:37Very good. Okay.
05:39Which novel about Lisbeth Salander is the first of the...
05:43Ryan and Laura?
05:44The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?
05:46Correct.
05:47The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, yes, is the first of the Millennium Trilogy by Stieg Larsson.
05:53Which citrus fruit is called a naranja in Spanish?
05:58Ethan and Dan?
05:58Orange.
05:59Yes.
06:00Good answer.
06:01So you're up and running.
06:02That's £25.
06:04Which 2024 film stars Ryan Gosling as a stunt...
06:09Ethan and Dan?
06:11The Fall Guy?
06:11Correct, yeah, the Fall Guy.
06:13He plays a stuntman named Colt Seavers.
06:17Now, you're also just one correct answer away from facing the riddle master.
06:22On a factory production line, what do the letters QC usually stand for?
06:28Ethan and Dan?
06:29Quality control.
06:30Yes, quality control.
06:32I saw Scott going for it.
06:33It was just a split-second difference, wasn't it, between you and Ethan and Dan?
06:37Welcome to the show.
06:39Officially, does it feel good to have unlocked your first riddle?
06:41Oh, very good.
06:42At long last.
06:43At long last.
06:44You've been building up to this moment and here you are on the cusp of greatness.
06:49Tell us a bit about your friendship.
06:50Yeah, we both met at university.
06:53We both went to university in Sheffield doing very, very different things.
06:56But we met playing lots of pool and doing pub quizzes in bars.
07:00Then lost contact for a little bit and found out a couple of months later
07:05that we'd been living next door to each other for about a year.
07:08I see.
07:09Since discovering that, we've seen each other quite a lot more
07:12and continue to sort of keep quite a firm friendship.
07:14And what do you both do for a living?
07:16I'm a civil servant.
07:17Yes.
07:19I'm currently doing a PhD in material science and engineering.
07:23My research looks at turning radioactive waste into glass.
07:28Wow.
07:28Well, I feel slightly bamboozled and hugely impressed by both of you.
07:32So, Ethan and Dan, good luck with your riddle.
07:34Henry, over to you.
07:35Yeah, I love this one.
07:36Ranvir, you play a starring role.
07:37Ooh.
07:37If Ranvir won with two when I showed five, but lost with two when I showed nothing,
07:44how many does she need to show to beat me if I show nothing again?
07:49If Ranvir won with two when I showed five, but lost with two when I showed nothing,
07:55how many does she need to show to beat me if I show nothing again?
07:59OK, so...
08:00So, what are we thinking here?
08:01Instantaneously, it sounds like it's part of a game.
08:03You can show things, yeah, show your hand.
08:05Show a hand. I'm trying to think of...
08:07But winning with two...
08:09Well, I showed five. Is there something going on with that?
08:12Yeah.
08:13I don't think there is. Maybe there is.
08:14So, what, blank? What's in show nothing again?
08:17What's that?
08:18I... Yeah, I... I'm stumped by this.
08:21When I show nothing.
08:23Well, we're not going to use the clue, to be clear.
08:26No.
08:28So, I think we just guess a number.
08:30Guess a number? That seems a strong tactic to me.
08:34So, one with two...
08:35Show nothing. We know that two loses it previously,
08:38so we can't guess two.
08:39I want to guess nothing, if I'm honest.
08:41You want to guess nothing?
08:43OK. Oh, you mean the answer nothing, not just saying nothing?
08:47No, no, no. Cool.
08:48We will say the answer.
08:49Make sure you're clear about that.
08:50Yes.
08:51Not confidently at all.
08:53We have nothing to lock in.
08:54As in the word...
08:55The word nothing.
08:56Nothing.
08:57You're looking at the word nothing.
08:59Yeah.
09:00I'm afraid it's the wrong answer.
09:02No.
09:03This is meant to be the easy round.
09:05I know. It's a tough one, isn't it?
09:06A tough one.
09:07Quite a... Yeah, quite...
09:08Yeah, a tricky one.
09:08Tricky one.
09:09Obviously, yes.
09:10Oh, hang on.
09:10James has put his hand up.
09:12Like an excellent pupil of ridiculous class.
09:14Well done.
09:14Hand up.
09:15Yeah, lovely.
09:16It's five.
09:17Five.
09:17It's all paper scissors.
09:18Rock, paper, scissors is the solution.
09:20Yes, absolutely.
09:22Can we get James to explain it, Henry?
09:23Please do, yeah.
09:24A zero is a rock.
09:25Two is the scissors.
09:27Five is paper.
09:28Absolutely right, yeah.
09:29If you slot all those in, it makes complete sense.
09:31Ranveer won with two when I showed five.
09:33So in that situation, you were showing the scissors.
09:35Yes, yes, yes.
09:35I was showing the paper, right?
09:37So you would win, the scissors beats paper.
09:39But you lost with two when you had scissors and I had nothing,
09:42which is the rock.
09:43So the rock would beat the scissors, right?
09:44So therefore, how many does she need to show to beat me
09:46if I show nothing again?
09:47So if I show nothing, that's rock.
09:49So therefore, to beat the rock, you need to show five, yeah, paper.
09:52Hands down, a fantastic riddle.
09:55Very good, wasn't it?
09:56Yeah.
09:56The moral high ground to James and Scott.
09:59Yeah, absolutely.
09:59But I'm afraid we can't add anything to your prize pot
10:02for that brilliant answer.
10:03So that was our second riddle, two riddles still to go.
10:07So keep playing hard.
10:08Good luck to all teams.
10:10Here we go.
10:11The 2024 Paralympic Games were hosted by which...
10:14James and Scott.
10:15France.
10:17I can't accept your answer.
10:19The 2020...
10:20Ethan and Dan.
10:22Paris.
10:23Yes.
10:24The 2024 Paralympic Games were hosted by which European city?
10:30OK.
10:31£25 to Ethan and Dan.
10:34Cupid is the Roman equivalent of which Greek...
10:37Ryan and Laura.
10:39Eros.
10:40Yes.
10:41The full question was,
10:42Cupid is the Roman equivalent of which Greek god of love
10:46who is often depicted as the son of Aphrodite?
10:49The answer is Eros.
10:50Which games console released by Nintendo in 2017
10:53features controllers known as Joy-Cons?
10:56Ryan and Laura.
10:57The Switch.
10:58Correct.
10:59You like your gaming, do you?
11:01Yeah.
11:01Yeah.
11:02OK, here we go.
11:03Ryan and Laura, one correct answer away from unlocking the third riddle of this round.
11:07Which former Conservative MP presents the documentary series Great British...
11:15Ethan and Dan.
11:15Michael Portillo.
11:16Great British Railway Journeys.
11:18Michael Portillo is the correct answer.
11:19Good interception.
11:21Ethan and Dan, you're also just one correct answer away from unlocking the next riddle.
11:24Consisting of sliced raw fish or seafood served on rice...
11:31Ryan and Laura.
11:32Sushi.
11:33Incorrect.
11:34Consisting of sliced raw fish or seafood served on rice,
11:39pokey is a dish that originates...
11:42Ethan and Dan.
11:43Hawaii.
11:44Yes, originates from which US island state?
11:47Hawaii.
11:48And that answer means that you're about to face the riddle master once again.
11:51So, you were totally outdone by the riddle master on the last riddle.
11:58Let's see if you can get one over on him this time.
12:01What's on your head beside your brow or somewhere holier than thou?
12:07So, it's going to be part of your head that's a synonym for sort of...
12:11Church or...
12:12Church or...
12:14Chapel.
12:14Chapel.
12:15Cathedral steeple.
12:17Holier than thou.
12:19Head beside your brow.
12:20Temple.
12:20Temple.
12:21Oh, that's it.
12:23Can we lock in the answer temple, please?
12:25Temple.
12:27Tell me why, Dan.
12:28The temple is the side of your head, beside your brow,
12:32and somewhere holier than thou is a place of worship.
12:35Absolutely right.
12:36Temple is the right answer, of course.
12:37Yeah, place of worship, temple, temple at the side of your head.
12:40Well done.
12:40Fantastic stuff.
12:41Right.
12:42£100 to Ethan and Dan.
12:44Right, we have one more riddle to go.
12:46Keep playing hard.
12:47James and Scott, come on.
12:48I know you can do it.
12:51Which car manufacturer makes the models Civic and Jab?
12:55Ethan and Dan?
12:56Honda.
12:57Correct.
12:59What is the name of the nun who founded the missionaries of charity...
13:04Ethan and Dan?
13:05Mother Teresa.
13:06Mother Teresa.
13:07Yes.
13:08What is the name of the nun who founded the missionaries of charity in Calcutta and was declared a saint
13:13in 2016?
13:14You're one correct answer away from unlocking another riddle here.
13:18In which 1942 romantic drama film does Dooley Wilson sing As Time Goes By?
13:26James and Scott?
13:28Casablanca.
13:28Correct.
13:29£25.
13:30Well done, James and Scott.
13:31It's nice to see you up and running.
13:33The name of which Great Asian Desert derives from the Mongolian meaning...
13:39Brian and Laura.
13:41Gobi.
13:41Yes, which means waterless place.
13:44Gobi.
13:45First published in 2014, What I Know For Sure is a book by which US talk show host?
13:54Ethan and Dan?
13:55Oprah Winfrey.
13:56She's the most famous talk show host in the world.
13:59Well, it is Oprah Winfrey, it was worth a guess because that now means that you've unlocked another riddle in
14:05this round.
14:06You did brilliantly with the last one.
14:08Will you be worshipping at the temple of the riddle master?
14:11Who knows?
14:11Let's see.
14:13We are a number of insects and we rent a house together.
14:17What are we?
14:18Sounds like your student days, probably.
14:21Right, OK, so number of insects.
14:24Right, I think I've got this, Dan.
14:26Yeah?
14:26I think, what are you when you rent a house together?
14:28I mean, you are flatmates, you could be housemates, but more importantly to a landlord, you are tenants.
14:34Ten ants.
14:35Number of insects, it's ten ants and you rent a house together.
14:38That's phenomenal.
14:39You are tenants.
14:40Can we lock in tenants, please?
14:43Fantastic, yeah, tenants is absolutely right, well done, yeah.
14:45Pretty work for Ethan, an excellent kind of morale and support from Dad, lovely, it was nice to see.
14:51Great, yeah, tenants.
14:52Doing all the hard work.
14:53I'd like a bit of that from you, when I say something good, you go, Ranvio, you're phenomenal.
14:57I promise to do that.
14:58That's the kind of friendship I want, this one here.
15:00Super stuff.
15:01Right, £100 to Ethan and Dan.
15:05Right, so teams, at the end of this round, Ethan and Dan, you now have £425.
15:11Ryan and Laura, you have £300.
15:13And James and Scott, I know you know this.
15:16You only managed £25 into your prize pot, which sadly means we already have to say goodbye.
15:20I'm terribly sorry.
15:21You've been friends for many, many years, haven't you?
15:24We have, yes.
15:25We both went to the same school together.
15:27I joined the bank and James joined a year later in the late 70s.
15:31And we've been friends ever since, really.
15:34Absolutely fantastic.
15:35And you spend a lot of time together, do you now?
15:37We like our golf, we like our walking, yep.
15:39Yeah, and did you enjoy being on the quiz today?
15:41I know it hasn't turned out quite as well as perhaps you want to.
15:43It's been a great experience, thank you.
15:45Well, it's been lovely, James and Scott, to have you on the show.
15:47Thank you so much.
15:49Right, and that is it for part one.
15:50Henry, we've got a competition on, haven't we, here?
15:53I know.
15:54But have you got another riddle for us over the break?
15:56I certainly do.
15:57I rank highly in the army, but it sounds like there may be a small amount of truth in the
16:02fact I'm a bit corny.
16:04What am I?
16:05I'll give you the answer when we come back.
16:18Welcome back now.
16:19We call it a break, but you don't let us actually rest.
16:22No, there's no break.
16:22So, I've been working very hard over this break.
16:25You've heard me muttering away to myself.
16:27Yeah.
16:28Go on, what's the riddle again?
16:29The riddle is I rank highly in the army,
16:31but it sounds like there may be a small amount of truth in the fact I'm a bit corny.
16:36What am I?
16:38So, you were getting pretty close during the break, Robbie.
16:40I was saying things like, OK, so what's a different thing for corny?
16:43Is that cheesy or does it mean something's got corners?
16:45I don't know.
16:45Yeah.
16:46And then you think about high-ranking people in the army, a major or a captain.
16:51You're correct that it is a military rank that we're looking for.
16:53It's a military rank.
16:54Now, what's disconcerting is that I turn this way and everyone's nodding.
16:59You've just left me here, haven't you?
17:00You left me hanging people.
17:01Right, go on, put me out in my misery.
17:04Colonel.
17:05Colonel is the right answer, yeah.
17:06A colonel of truth, a colonel of corn, and, of course, colonel is a senior military rank.
17:10If only the breaks were ten minutes long, I would have got it.
17:14Very good.
17:14I hope you got that at home as well.
17:16Now, Ryan and Laura, Ethan and Dan, well, you're very well matched as competitors, aren't you?
17:22Yes.
17:23Ryan and Laura, you were racing ahead in the first couple of riddles, weren't you?
17:26Yes.
17:27Yes.
17:27And are you feeling relaxed?
17:29Are you feeling focused?
17:30How are you feeling?
17:31A lot more relaxed, I think, than at the beginning of the show.
17:34I think at first I was...
17:35I probably hit the buzzer quickly just because my hand was shaking close to it, you know?
17:38Yes.
17:39And then, of course, Ethan and Dan, you've now snuck ahead.
17:43Just by a little bit, though.
17:44Just by a little bit, but it's really good, actually.
17:47And you're all very competitive people, aren't you?
17:49If we're playing tennis, not competitive in the slightest.
17:52No.
17:52We would just be very sad all the time if that was the case.
17:57Right, because you don't play that well as doubles.
17:59Because we don't play very well.
18:00Right.
18:00But if it's a quiz or if it's something...
18:04Like ridiculous.
18:05Yes, absolutely.
18:06The gloves come off and we want to win.
18:08Look at that fighting talk from Laura.
18:12OK, Ethan and Dan.
18:13So, you guys, when it comes to competition and quizzes, where do your emotions go?
18:18How far can it go?
18:18To a very dark and negative place.
18:21Wow.
18:22We're both quite competitive when it comes to these sorts of things.
18:26Over-competitive, perhaps, between each other, but...
18:29Oh, you usually play against each other, do you?
18:31We usually play against each other,
18:33so we're combining forces to perhaps see if we can achieve a greater good.
18:38I love it.
18:39Right, OK.
18:40Well, this is going to be quite a second round, isn't it?
18:43I know.
18:44I can feel it already.
18:44All of our teams have quite a big competitive edge.
18:48Yeah, they do.
18:50Right, OK, guys.
18:51Let's just take a look at the scores.
18:52As you said, Ethan and Dan, you're only slightly ahead.
18:55Ryan and Laura have £300, and Ethan and Dan, you have £425.
19:00And now, here in round two, the questions from me are worth £50.
19:06Once again, you need three correct to unlock a riddle,
19:09and those riddles are different, aren't they, Henry?
19:12They certainly are.
19:13In this round, you're going to be facing visual riddles.
19:15So, as you might expect, they contain pictures,
19:17but also numbers, shapes and words.
19:19They're a little bit trickier this time,
19:21so if you can get them right, they're worth £200 each.
19:24Now, only one member of your team will be able to answer the riddle,
19:28and you'll have just 60 seconds in which to get it right.
19:32Also here, if you get your riddle wrong,
19:35then it will be handed over to the opposing team for a steal.
19:38So, you can see, these scores will be changing a lot in this round, I expect.
19:43OK, hands by the buzzers, let's play.
19:46Which Scottish indie group shares its name with an Austrian Archduke?
19:52Ryan and Laura.
19:53Franz Ferdinand.
19:54Correct.
19:55That's £50.
19:57Which type of primate has species named Howler, Macaque, Ethan and Dan?
20:03Monkey.
20:04Correct.
20:04And Capuchin.
20:06Monkey it is.
20:07Which Spanish club won the 2024 UEFA Women's Champions League?
20:19Ryan and Laura.
20:21Barcelona.
20:22Correct.
20:24You seem surprised by your brilliance there, Laura.
20:27Oh, I love football, me.
20:31OK, Ryan and Laura,
20:33your one correct answer away from unlocking our first visual riddle.
20:37At the end of a children's book by Dr. Seuss,
20:40which part of the Grinch grows three sizes?
20:43Ryan and Laura.
20:44His heart.
20:45Yes.
20:46Isn't it a lovely tale as well?
20:48Lovely stuff.
20:48Here we go.
20:49So, only one of you can face this riddle.
20:52There are three categories to choose from.
20:54Let's take a look.
20:55Numbers, names and animals.
20:58I quite like numbers in general.
21:01I quite like when you volunteer to do stuff like this, so...
21:04OK, looks like...
21:05That looks like that's what you're going to do.
21:07Yeah.
21:08OK, great.
21:08So, Laura, if you take centre stage...
21:10OK.
21:11Oh.
21:13Right.
21:13Now, remember, you can ask for a clue in this round.
21:17Yeah.
21:17OK, good luck.
21:1960 seconds, Laura, to give me a correct answer
21:21after I've finished reading the riddle that goes with this.
21:24OK.
21:24How much is a goal worth?
21:26Your time starts now.
21:28Oh, OK.
21:30So, the third one down.
21:34Nine plus five, 14, minus 11, is three.
21:38So, a glove must be three.
21:41So, a glove plus boots is eight.
21:44So, boots must be five.
21:47So, a football minus five is two.
21:51So, a football must be seven.
21:53So, seven plus seven is 14, minus a goal is 13, is one.
21:58So, a goal must be one.
22:01One.
22:02Locked in.
22:03Locking in one?
22:04Yeah, please.
22:05You mainly play tennis?
22:06Yeah.
22:07But you like football too?
22:08Woo!
22:09That's two football questions.
22:11Yeah, it's the right answer.
22:12Well done, yeah.
22:12One, of course, goal.
22:13Yeah, one.
22:14Yeah, well done.
22:15You quickly identified, of course,
22:16it's the third equation there that you've got to work out, right?
22:18You've got all the pieces there to work out that a glove is worth three.
22:21Once you know where the glove is, you can work out where the boots are.
22:23Once you know where the boots are, you can work out that the football,
22:26yeah, seven, of course, two.
22:27Sevens are 14, minus one is 13.
22:29So, the goal must be one.
22:30Well done.
22:31Brilliant.
22:32Laura, as you were deducing that, I thought,
22:33I wish she'd been my maths teacher at school.
22:35I might have done better.
22:37But actually, interestingly, you do teach in a way, don't you?
22:40Yeah, I'm a lecturer at university.
22:43I teach students about the creative industries,
22:46so art direction and marketing and events and curation.
22:49Well, you can just definitely see you're very methodical,
22:52very clear, very eloquent.
22:53I can see you'd be an amazing teacher, actually.
22:56Fantastic stuff.
22:57Right, Ryan and Laura, that's £200 added to your prize pot.
23:01Well done.
23:02OK, so we have two more visual riddles here.
23:04Let's keep playing.
23:06What is the name of the house that is the official country residence
23:10of the UK Prime Minister?
23:13Ethan and Dan.
23:14Checkers.
23:14Correct.
23:16Who is the title character in the cartoons
23:19that also feature Ranger Smith and Boo Boo?
23:23Ethan and Dan.
23:24Yogi Bear.
23:25Yes, correct.
23:27Which object, typically found in a bathroom,
23:31can follow the words baby and meteor?
23:34Ethan and Dan.
23:35Shower.
23:36Yes.
23:37I was looking at you, Laura, there, briefly.
23:39Baby shower.
23:41Superstar.
23:41Right, well, I have to say, Ethan and Dan, well done.
23:45So, you have a decision to make here.
23:47You could choose from names or animals.
23:50Which do you prefer, Dan?
23:51Because I think you're going to end up doing this.
23:54OK, I'll take animals, I think.
23:56I've been volunteered.
23:57You have.
23:58We've got a spreadsheet where we've been tracking
24:01how we've been doing while we're watching the show.
24:03And Dan is better at round two, so we're sending him in.
24:06I love that a spreadsheet.
24:08You've looked at the data, eh?
24:09It's great.
24:10Come on.
24:10A civil servant.
24:11A civil servant doing a spreadsheet for a quiz.
24:14It's the best thing ever.
24:16Right, Ethan, if you step back.
24:18Dan, good luck, animals.
24:20Yeah.
24:21Dan, let's see if you can turn this one clear as glass.
24:2460 seconds to give me that right answer
24:25after I've finished reading the riddle that goes with this.
24:28Which of the animals pictured doesn't live on Hideaway Farm?
24:32Your time starts now.
24:34OK, so looking at the text at the bottom, you can see at the end of each one they've got
24:42animals.
24:43So, live in chic kennels becomes chicken.
24:47Uh, cheap igloos becomes pig.
24:51Uh, so chicken and pig are all fine.
24:55Uh, oh, idiotic owls becomes cow.
25:00And...
25:01Oh, a poor secret becomes horse.
25:04So we've got chicken, pig, cow, horse.
25:10So it means that sheep must be the one that doesn't live there.
25:15You're locking in sheep?
25:16Yes.
25:18Dan is the right answer.
25:20Well done.
25:21Yeah, fantastic work.
25:22Very quick work there.
25:22Of course, the clue is, yeah, Hideaway Farm.
25:24Uh, the animals are hidden.
25:26One in each line.
25:27There's four there.
25:28Uh, as you correctly say, chic kennels becomes chicken.
25:30Cheap igloos becomes pig.
25:32Idiotic owls, cow.
25:33Uh, and a poor secret.
25:35Horses hidden in there.
25:36Uh, those are all the ones hidden there on Hideaway Farm.
25:38The only one that isn't hidden is the sheep.
25:40Well done.
25:41Wow.
25:42Absolutely brilliant deducing.
25:44Well done, Dan.
25:45So, £200 to Ethan and Dan.
25:49Right, we've got one more visual riddle left.
25:52Let's keep playing.
25:53The logo of which messaging app is named Ghostface Chiller?
25:58Ethan and Dan.
25:59Snapchat.
26:00Yes.
26:02In hospitals, the ENT department deals with problems
26:06of the ear, nose and what?
26:07Ethan and Dan.
26:08Throat.
26:08Correct.
26:10One away from unlocking the final visual riddle here.
26:13Gary Oldman plays MI5 agent.
26:17Ryan and Laura.
26:18Slow horses.
26:19Yes.
26:19Plays MI5 agent Jackson Lamb in which Apple TV Plus series?
26:23It's a great show, isn't it?
26:24Slow horses.
26:25Love it.
26:26Next question.
26:27The Devon village of Westwood Ho is the only place in the UK.
26:32Ethan and Dan.
26:33Exclamation mark.
26:34Yes.
26:35It's the only place in the UK his name contains which grammatical symbol?
26:40Westwood Ho.
26:40There you go.
26:41Well done.
26:42So, here we are.
26:43Ethan, you volunteered, Dan.
26:45Yeah.
26:45And again.
26:46And again.
26:47Right.
26:47Let's take a look at what the category is.
26:49Names.
26:50Perfect.
26:51Names.
26:51Dan, you have a name.
26:52I have a name.
26:54I think that makes me qualified.
26:55Well, I have to say, you solved that last riddle so methodically, it was very impressive.
27:01Yeah, amazing.
27:01Really quick work.
27:02Let's see if you can do the same again for names.
27:04Once again, Dan, 60 seconds to give me the right answer after I've finished reading the riddle.
27:08Which of these names is the odd one out?
27:10Your time starts now.
27:12Okay.
27:13L, B, Liza, E, Emma, G, Anya, T, L, E, K, Ruth, J.
27:22I'm trying to think if you can...
27:25Oh, hang on.
27:26If you move the last letter to the front with almost all of them, you can make another name.
27:32So, Belle, Eliza, Gemma, Tanya, Kelly.
27:35So, Ruth J, because I don't think Druth exists as a name.
27:40Ruth J is the odd one out.
27:42Ruth J.
27:45Dan is right.
27:46Well done.
27:46Yeah, of course.
27:47Ruth J is the odd one out because all the others, you can move the final initial to the beginning
27:51of the name and gives you a different name.
27:53Belle, Eliza, Gemma, Tanya, Kelly, but not Ruth J.
27:56Well done.
27:57Very, very good, Dan.
27:59Ethan, step forward.
28:00You made the right decision, frankly, didn't you?
28:02Let's be clear.
28:03I was nowhere near that.
28:04You were nowhere near it.
28:06It's impressive, isn't it?
28:07Yeah, amazing.
28:07Almost too impressive for the real master.
28:09I know, I'm raging.
28:10Dial up the difficulty in the final round.
28:12Right, well done, team.
28:14That is £200 added to your prize pot.
28:17And so, at the end of that round, Ethan and Dan, you're now on £1,175.
28:22Ryan and Laura, you're on £700.
28:24But that gap definitely and regularly changes hands in this following round, the deciding round.
28:30So, bear that in mind, both teams.
28:32No room for complacency.
28:33Henry, what kind of riddle do you have for us over the break?
28:37What is thick-skinned and sounds like it has no regard for the feelings of others?
28:42I'll give you the answer after the break.
28:47APPLAUSE
28:54Welcome back to Ridiculous, the ridiculously clever and brain-teasing show.
28:59Now, before the break, you set us all a challenge.
29:01Certainly did.
29:02What is thick-skinned and sounds like it has no regard for the feelings of others?
29:07Ryan, Laura, Ethan, Dan, any ideas?
29:10I think it's callous.
29:12Callous, absolutely right.
29:13Yeah, of course, callous.
29:14Yeah, thick-skinned might be callous.
29:15Yeah, or also, if you're careless, you might be callous.
29:18Brilliant answer.
29:19Well done, Ethan.
29:20You've cracked that one too.
29:22Ryan and Laura, you're on £700.
29:24Ethan and Dan, you've got £1,175 as we enter this deciding round.
29:31This is where the competition gets serious as the team with the highest prize pot
29:36at the end of this round will be going through to the final
29:39to face Henry's riddle run.
29:42Now, this time, correct questions are worth £100.
29:45And, Henry, how much are your riddles now worth?
29:48Well, this is the deciding round.
29:49So these are the toughest riddles you've faced so far.
29:51If you can get them right, they're worth £300 each.
29:54OK, if you're both ready, let's play.
29:58How many vertical columns are there in a standard game of Connect Four?
30:04Ethan and Dan.
30:05Seven.
30:05Correct.
30:06That's £100.
30:08What title is shared by a 1997 number one hit by the Spice Girls
30:15and a BBC genealogy series?
30:18Ryan and Laura.

30:21Yes.

30:32Correct.
30:33What does the V stand for in DVLA,

30:42from unlocking our first high-value riddle.

30:51Ethan and Dan.
30:53Cricket.
30:53Cricket.
30:54Cricket.
30:54Either one of you could now be unlocking the next riddle.
30:58Good luck.
30:59Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger are the founders of which online open-source encyclopedia...
31:05Ethan and Dan?
31:06Wikipedia.
31:07Wikipedia?
31:07Yes.
31:07Wikipedia is the right answer.
31:10Well done.
31:10Right.
31:11Henry, your first tricky one of this round.
31:14I know, I've got to try and get one past you guys.
31:16Here we go.
31:17We are four of a kind.
31:19One beneath your feet, another brings you heat.
31:22One provides your breath, the final gets you wet.
31:27What are we?
31:27OK, so I think I might already have this.
31:30I was going to say, you're nodding, tell me.
31:32So, it's going to be something that you can group into four.
31:34I think it's the four traditional elements.
31:36One beneath your feet being earth.
31:38One brings you heat, fire, provide you breath, air and get wet, water.
31:44So, I assume it's sort of the traditional four elements.
31:47Absolutely.
31:48Let's lock that in.
31:48Let's lock that in.
31:49The elements.
31:50The elements.
31:51I mean, you have got time to discuss it, but, you know.
31:54No need, it's the right answer.
31:56Yeah, the classical elements.
31:57Yeah, of course, four of a kind.
31:59There's four elements in the classical elements.
32:01Earth, fire, air and water.
32:02One beneath your feet, earth.
32:04Another brings you heat, that's fire.
32:05One provides you breath, that's air.
32:07And one gets you wet, water.
32:08Well done.
32:09Very good answer.
32:10£300 to Ethan and Dan.
32:13Let's keep playing.
32:15Which ceremonial item was carried into Westminster Abbey by Penny Morden?
32:19Ethan and Dan.
32:20It's a sword.
32:22I can accept that.
32:23It's the sword of state, but a sword is correct.
32:26Carried into Westminster Abbey by Penny Mordaunt at the 2023 coronation.
32:32What term, meaning confidence in one's own worth, is the stage name of the British singer,
32:39Ethan and Dan?

32:52In which long-running Radio 4 show do contestants attempt to speak about a subject for 60 seconds?
32:59Ethan and Dan?
33:00Just a minute.
33:00Just a minute.
33:01Without hesitation, repetition or deviation.
33:04You're not even taking a minute to solve our riddles at the moment.
33:08Right.
33:08Come on, riddle master.
33:09What have you got?
33:10Here we go.
33:11Good luck.
33:12I live in trees and among the flora.
33:15I've certainly got a magical aura.
33:17I'm in the stories upon your shelf, but can you see the answer itself?
33:22What am I?
33:22So all this stuff about being in things and can you see the answer itself, it's making
33:27me wonder if it's in between some of these words going on.
33:29It could be.
33:30I assume it's going to be something relatively wild.
33:33I mean, the story is upon your shelf, so books, fine.
33:36What's part of the book's spine?
33:38No.
33:39No.
33:39It's a bit rough, this one.
33:40Yeah, we could always use our clue.
33:42We've got a bit more time, I think, to have a quick gander.
33:45In the stories upon your shelf.
33:48No, I'm not seeing it in there.
33:49Cut.
33:50I think we might do it.
33:52I think we're going to use the clue.
33:53Okay.
33:54Henry?
33:54You'd like the clue, of course, yeah.
33:55Pull apart a word in the question and the answer will reveal itself.
33:59Ah, fantastic.
34:00Okay, right.
34:00So, we've got that far.
34:02So, pull apart a word in the thing.
34:04So, it's going to be within one of the words.
34:06Okay, so.
34:07So, what have we got?
34:09So, I mean, the stories upon your shelf.
34:11Stories upon your shelf.
34:14Is anything backwards?
34:15Yeah, that's fine.
34:16I'm now trying to.
34:17Not poo's.
34:20It did break apart, didn't it?
34:21It didn't say reverse anything, so.
34:23Shelf becomes flesh, but that's not it.
34:26Flesh?
34:26It's not.
34:27It's not flesh.
34:28I mean, that's good.
34:29Flesh.
34:29We've misspelt flesh backwards in shelf.
34:32So, you're locking in?
34:34We know it's not right.
34:37We know it's not right.
34:38You're locking in flesh?
34:39Yes.
34:40I'm afraid it's the wrong answer.
34:41Right, well, Ryan and Laura, deep in thought, what's your answer for a steal?
34:47Elf.
34:48Elf, Ryan, why?
34:49Well, it says the answer, it's elf.
34:52And it's also in the word shelf.
34:54Shelf.
34:55And elves have magical auras and they live in the trees.
34:58Elf is the right answer.
34:59Oh, very good.
35:00Well done, yeah, of course.
35:01Elf, yeah.
35:02Absolutely.
35:02They live among the flora, yeah?
35:03Of course, a magical aura.
35:04You're looking for a magical creature.
35:06That's the first part of the riddle there.
35:08I'm in the stories upon your shelf, of course.
35:09Elves appear in literature, particularly in bedtime stories, things like that.
35:13But can you see the answer?
35:15It's elf.
35:16So it was written right there.
35:17And you guys took that apart in lots of different ways.
35:19You looked at things backwards.
35:20You looked at anagrams.
35:21But it was that simple.
35:23But can you see the answer?
35:25It's elf.
35:26And, of course, it's in the clue as well.
35:27Pull apart a word in the question and the answer will reveal it's elf.
35:31So we had that.
35:31That clue is in there twice for you.
35:33A superb steal.
35:36£150 to Ryan and Laura.
35:38OK, we have one more riddle left in this round.
35:42Good luck to both teams.
35:43What snack, often made over a campfire,
35:47consists of toasted marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched between two biscuits?
35:52Ryan and Laura.
35:53S'mores.
35:54Correct.
35:54S'more.
35:56The period of industrial action that became known as the Winter of Discontent
36:00took place during which decade?
36:02Eaten and Dan.
36:031970s.
36:04Correct.
36:05Which decade of the 20th century?
36:07What species of animal is the Beatrix Potter character named
36:12Mrs Tiggywinkle?
36:14Ethan and Dan.
36:16Hedgehog.
36:16Correct.
36:18Which Welsh band released the albums
36:22Word Gets Around and Just Enough Education to Perform?
36:27Ethan and Dan.
36:28Stereophonics.
36:30Yes.
36:32That guess, essentially, has got you back in the flow with the riddle master.
36:37Let's see.
36:38Well, you outdid them.
36:39I'm glad I managed to get one past you, but let's see if I can do it again.
36:43I have a mouth in the middle, yet I never speak.
36:45I throw shade at the moon and bring darkness to the day
36:49and have the power to steal your light.
36:52What am I?
36:53So, having a mouth in the middle, I think we're looking for something like a synonym of mouth.
36:58All I've got is lips.
36:59So, a word with lips in the middle.
37:01I throw shade at the moon, so what happens when the moon becomes dark?
37:05I would say an eclipse.
37:07That brings darkness to your day, it steals your light, and it has lips in the middle.
37:12So, I think eclipse.
37:14Locking it in.
37:15You've locked an eclipse.
37:16Eclipse is right.
37:17Well done.
37:17Yeah, eclipse.
37:18Of course.
37:18Very quick work.
37:19Yeah, fantastic.
37:20A mouth in the middle, a lips, yeah, of course, is the word you're looking for.
37:23Hidden in the middle of the word.
37:25It never speaks, because it's just the word hidden in the middle, just letters.
37:27Throw shade at the moon, of course.
37:28That's a lunar eclipse, and, of course, brings darkness to the day in a solar eclipse.
37:33It has the power to steal your light.
37:34If you eclipse someone, you might steal their thunder or steal their light.
37:37Yeah, well done.
37:38Brilliant work.
37:39Well done, Ethan and Dan.
37:40Once again, £300 added to your prize pot.
37:44Well, after that round, congratulations.
37:45Ethan and Dan, you're through to the final with a prize pot of £2,000.
37:49£1,675.
37:51But Ryan and Laura, you were fantastic throughout, and you ended up with £1,150, which means,
37:58as you know, it's time to say goodbye.
37:59Have you enjoyed your time on the show?
38:01Oh, yeah.
38:02It's been brilliant.
38:02OK, well, listen, Laura, good luck with the baby.
38:07Do you know what flavour of baby you're having?
38:08A little boy.
38:09A little boy.
38:10That's lovely.
38:11Thanks so much, Ryan and Laura, for being on the show.
38:13Well, Ethan and Dan will face Henry's riddle run now, and we'll see how they cope with
38:18the pressure, with all that cash that they've accumulated up for grabs.
38:21But before all of that, Henry hit us with another riddle.
38:24Here it comes.
38:25How might you describe people who were around 40 to 60, or who were around 476 to 1450?
38:31I'll give you the answer when we come back.
38:44Welcome back.
38:45This is Ridiculous Now.
38:47Henry, you set us all a devious riddle.
38:50Certainly did.
38:50I asked, how might you describe people who are around 40 to 60, or who were around 476 to
38:561450?
38:57Ethan and Dan, you're our top riddle solvers.
38:59You've got everything right, apart from just a couple, I think.
39:02So, what do you think?
39:03I think we both think it's middle-aged.
39:05Middle-aged.
39:06Yeah, of course.
39:07Yeah, or middle-aged.
39:07Yeah, well done.
39:08If you're between 40 and 60, you're middle-aged.
39:10Or if you lived between the year 476 and 1450, those were the middle-ages.
39:15I'm taking this personally.
39:16I'm going to say that's wrong, and it's youthful, actually.
39:18Thank you very much.
39:19Thank you very much.
39:20Moving on.
39:21Correct.
39:22Moving on.
39:22Rude.
39:23Right.
39:24Dan and Ethan, well done.
39:26You're in the final.
39:27How are you feeling?
39:28Pretty good.
39:29I think we started off a little slow, and we've worked into it.
39:32We both feel decent.
39:34Yeah, you should do.
39:35You've accrued an impressive £2,675 to your prize pot.
39:40So, what would that money go on if you managed to take it home today?
39:43Well, for me, my partner, he's just about to start a PhD in kind of biology and that kind
39:48of thing, and he'd really like to go to the Galapagos to go and see some of their stuff.
39:52Yes.
39:52So, I would go with him.
39:53I'm not just shipping him off.
39:55But, yeah, I think a lot of it would go on that.
39:57My girlfriend's just moved over to Manchester, so we don't get to see each other as frequently
40:02now.
40:02So, I'd probably spend a lot of it on actually learning to drive, finally.
40:07Oh, lovely.
40:07Because I still don't know how to.
40:08So, it will go on driving lessons in sort of the short-term train tickets.
40:14Yeah.
40:14So, you've got travelling to Manchester and you've got the Galapagos Islands.
40:18OK, fine.
40:20Two very different ambitions, but equally worthy.
40:22Now, to take that money home, you have to face Henry's riddle run.
40:25Henry.
40:26So, in the riddle run, you're going to be facing puzzles in which words are represented
40:29by combinations of pictures and letters.
40:31They're often known as rebus riddles, and the answers can be phrases, sayings, or a combination
40:36of words that are familiar to all.
40:38Ethan and Dan, the rules are simple.
40:39There are ten riddles in all, and you need six correct in 60 seconds to take home the
40:45money that you've built up so far.
40:47If you're not sure about a particular riddle, say pass, then you can come back to it.
40:51And that's not all.
40:52If you do answer six correctly, you'll then have the chance to double your winnings and
40:57take home £5,350.
41:00And don't worry.
41:01If it all goes wrong, you still go home with our collectible teacup and saucer.
41:07First, though, you've got to face Henry's riddle run.
41:10Are you ready?
41:11Yes.
41:12Yep.
41:12Henry, over to you.
41:13Here we go.
41:14Your 60 seconds will start as soon as the first riddle is revealed.
41:17Good luck.
41:18Let's play.
41:19The grass is greener.
41:21The grass is always greener on the other side.
41:23Yep.
41:23Correct.
41:24Last man standing.
41:25Correct.
41:28Cow box.
41:29Cow box.
41:30Twelve cows.
41:31Box of cows.
41:32Herd of cows.
41:33No.
41:33Pass.
41:37A tin of beans.
41:40A can of beans.
41:41A can of beans.
41:41Open a can of beans.
41:44Spilling beans.
41:45Spilling the beans.
41:46Correct.
41:48Half price.
41:49Correct.
41:52Space station.
41:53Correct.
41:57Eye candy.
41:58Correct.
42:01Well done.
42:03Ethan and Dan.
42:05Right.
42:05Well, that means you've got all six riddles that you needed and you've just won £2,675.
42:12Don't leave him hanging.
42:14I'm not going to leave him hanging.
42:19Well done.
42:20You've done absolutely brilliantly.
42:21I don't think it was ever in doubt.
42:23You've played so fantastically throughout.
42:25But, Henry, it wasn't all plain sailing.
42:28No, no.
42:29You had a pass in there.
42:29You got a little stumped on a couple, which was nice.
42:32For me, anyway.
42:33And this one you got stuck on.
42:35Any ideas now?
42:36Obviously, it's cows.
42:37But what are the cows in?
42:39Cow grid?
42:39Grid cow?
42:40I've got no idea.
42:41Grid is right.
42:42Cattle grid.
42:43Cattle grid is the right answer.
42:45Yeah, cattle grid.
42:46I like that one.
42:47Cattle grid.
42:48Tricky.
42:48But, yeah.
42:49You've got everything else right.
42:50Well done.
42:50Very, very impressive round.
42:52Good stuff, both of you.
42:53So, the Galapagos Islands and Manchester, both on the agenda now.
42:57You've managed to win £2,675.
43:01Now, if that's enough for you, then we are delighted.
43:04And you can finish your game and leave with that money.
43:08Or you can choose to face one last riddle.
43:11This time, you'll have just 20 seconds to give an answer.
43:15If you get it right, you will double your winnings and take away £5,350.
43:21But if you can't find the right answer in that time, you'll lose everything and you'll leave
43:27with nothing apart from, of course, our teacup and saucer.
43:31So, figure out what you want to do.
43:33Right.
43:34So, I think you want to go for it, don't you?
43:36Well, you know, the Galapagos is expensive, Dan.
43:39What can I say?
43:40But, I mean, the spreadsheet would have it, but we should go for this.
43:43Yeah.
43:43But what do you think?
43:45Now the money is potentially in your hands.
43:47I mean, I'd happily take it, but if you're really sure, I'm happy to trust you on this one.
43:51There's some new riddles we haven't seen there.
43:52Yeah?
43:53I'm happy to trust you and go for it if we want.
43:55OK.
43:56Will I get blamed for this when we go home?
43:58Oh, not for too long.
43:59Not for too long.
44:02Let's go for it.
44:03All right.
44:04Ethan and Dan, good luck.
44:06You're feeling brave.
44:07Henry, over to you.
44:08Here we go.
44:09Good luck, guys.
44:1120 seconds to give me that right answer, and the time will start as soon as the riddle's revealed.
44:15Let's play.
44:17OK.
44:18Parking backwards.
44:20Backwards parking.
44:21Reverse parking.
44:21Reverse parking.
44:22Correct.
44:26Unbelievable.
44:27Very, very nicely done.
44:29Well done.
44:29Yeah, of course.
44:30Yeah.
44:30You noticed that it was the word parking backwards and then very quickly got there.
44:33Reverse parking is the right answer.
44:35Well done.
44:35Fantastic.
44:36Dan, you trusted Ethan on this one.
44:38No recriminations.
44:39And, in fact, you've outsmarted the riddle master, and you're leaving with an impressive
44:43£5,350.
44:47Well done.
44:48Wow.
44:49What a game.
44:50Ethan and Dan, that spreadsheet appears to be the magic sprinkling that we all need in
44:54our lives.
44:55Incredible, yeah.
44:56Incredible.
44:56I'm really impressed you got that one.
44:57But, well, will you be able to do the reverse parking in your upcoming driving lessons?
45:01That's the real test.
45:02Yeah, that is the real test.
45:03It probably is just as challenging as doing the riddles itself.
45:08Ethan and Dan, congratulations.
45:09Well done on playing a smashing game.
45:11And thank you for joining us at home.
45:13And we'll see you next time for more Ridiculous Riddles.
45:45APPLAUSE
45:46Amen.
