00:00:10i think i found the problem there's a discrepancy in the date of the land grant discrepancy yes
00:00:16captain nathaniel mass received a land grant of 300 acres in november 1721 but
00:00:25captain mass was in england at the time he didn't return to the colonies until 1723 which
00:00:31means he couldn't have helped settle the region until two years after he was given the land given
00:00:37the land exactly because he wasn't even here i don't know how to thank you taylor this is the

00:02:57Ray, sorry I'm late.
00:02:58I gotta parlay to help my dad.
00:02:59Man, I still can't believe you grew up on a ranch in Montana.
00:03:03Oh, come on, man. My family in Forest Ridge go way back.
00:03:06My great-great-grandfather cleared the land for that ranch.
00:03:08Yeah, you told me. Him and Daniel Boone.
00:03:10Look, this is so far away from you busting sergeant
00:03:12running your tech company in Silicon Valley.
00:03:14Oh, my phone.
00:03:16Come on, man. You gotta love this place, right?
00:03:19Every time I come here, it's like stepping back in time.
00:03:22Which is why it's costing so much money to bring it into the 21st century.
00:03:26Haven't you taken a good look at that electric panel?
00:03:28Yeah, did you talk to Lyle Lindquist about doing the rewiring?
00:03:31Yeah, about that. Your buddy's been coming a bit too high.
00:03:34Okay, well, I'm not sure I'd call him my buddy,
00:03:36but he said you two have known each other since grade school.
00:03:38Regardless, I hear he's a good electrician.
00:03:40And I'm your business manager.
00:03:42Okay, I really appreciate this passion project of yours,
00:03:45but it's my job to watch the bottom line.
00:03:48I know, Ray. It just makes a lot of sense to hire as many locals as possible, you know?
00:03:53None of it's going to put us over budget.
00:03:57Okay, all right. You're right. We'll get some more beds.
00:04:00Oh, one last thing before I leave.
00:04:04Apparently not everyone's too thrilled that we'll turn the Graff Hotel into a luxury tourist attraction.
00:04:10I was worried about this.
00:04:14This could be good for the whole town.
00:04:16Why would anyone want to stop it?
00:04:18Well, you can find it when you ask them at the meeting.
00:04:20Wait, what?
00:04:22One of us needs to be there.
00:04:25You're the local boy made good.
00:04:28Sounds good, doesn't it? I'll call you.
00:04:38Hey, Dad.
00:04:40Hey, there.
00:04:42I was just going to make some lunch. You want to join me?
00:04:45Yeah, sure. Let me give you a hand with that.
00:04:49I'm heading into Helena for some meetings.
00:04:52I'll be back tomorrow.
00:04:55Supposed to be a storm front moving in. A couple inches of snow.
00:05:01Dad, it's October. The leaves just started changing. It's not going to snow.
00:05:05That wouldn't be the first time we were in for a surprise.
00:05:08There's a frost warning. You better watch the roads. Could get icy out there.
00:05:12I'll be fine.
00:05:14All that time living in California.
00:05:17You could be out of practice driving in it.
00:05:19I'll be okay. All right? I promise.
00:05:22Hey, let me ask you something.
00:05:24Do you know anything about this town meeting tomorrow night?
00:05:29Yeah, what about the hotel?
00:05:31Yeah, why didn't you tell me?
00:05:33I figured you knew about it. I mean, you grew up here, Joel.
00:05:37You know, when people got something on their mind, they're not shy about speaking up.
00:05:41Yeah, that I do.
00:05:44So, what is it exactly on their mind?
00:05:48They barely see you around here anymore.
00:05:50Then one day you show up, say you're gonna turn one of the oldest establishments in town into some sort
00:05:56of fancy resort.
00:05:58It's not a resort.
00:06:01It's a...
00:06:03It's a destination.
00:06:05See? Right there.
00:06:07Destination.
00:06:08What does that even mean?
00:06:10Well, so what are you saying? I got a bit of a PR problem.
00:06:13I'm saying, you gotta talk straight to people if you want to get them on board.
00:06:20Look, why don't you take my truck?
00:06:23That little go-kart of yours isn't gonna be much good if the weather turns.
00:06:28Okay, Dad.
00:06:29You know what? I'll tell you what.
00:06:30I'll leave you the keys, you can take that little golden ride for a spin.
00:06:59I'll leave you the keys, you can take that little bit.
00:07:01Oh.
00:07:02It's okay, it's just, it's just a little ice.
00:07:10Please.
00:07:24Oh, no.
00:07:29Oh, man.
00:07:38This is great.
00:07:44Okay.
00:07:49Really?
00:08:01I'm not even having a hard enough day already.
00:08:04Oh.
00:08:05Ow.
00:08:06I'm not even having a hard enough day.
00:08:36Thank goodness.
00:08:37You all right?
00:08:38Uh, yeah.
00:08:39Yeah, I think so.
00:08:40I think I must have hit a patch of black ice and I thought I was gonna freeze out here.
00:08:44Yeah.
00:08:45Thank you for stopping.
00:08:47You lose something?
00:08:53I don't suppose you have any reception out here?
00:08:57Uh, yeah, not out here.
00:08:58What I can do is I can offer you a ride if you'd like, but you don't know me.
00:09:04So here's what I'm gonna do.
00:09:06Uh, I'm gonna write my license plate down, as you can see.
00:09:13You can take this, put it on your dash, and you know, if anyone comes looking for you, they'll know
00:09:21where to find you.
00:09:22Well, that's very thoughtful of you.
00:09:24Easy.
00:09:26So, uh, you know, before I do commit to this, which way are you headed?
00:09:31Uh, I'm actually heading to a small town called Forest Ridge.
00:09:34I know it well.
00:09:35Come on, get you out of here.
00:09:38It's been quite the day.
00:09:39I see that.
00:09:40Come on.
00:09:47I'm Taylor, by the way.
00:09:51Introductions.
00:09:52Forgot about that part.
00:09:53Uh, Joel.
00:09:55It's nice to meet you.
00:09:56Nice to meet you.
00:09:59So, uh, well, what brings you to Forest Ridge?
00:10:03Uh, my big brother lives here with his family.
00:10:06I've actually never been here before.
00:10:09Well, I might be slightly biased, being that I'm from here, but there's no place quite like it.
00:10:16And I know I've been around a lot, so I think you're gonna enjoy it.
00:10:21Yeah, I hope so.
00:10:43Can I give you a hand with this?
00:10:44Oh, no, I'm fine.
00:10:45I got it.
00:10:45You've been already so helpful.
00:10:47All right.
00:10:48It was an absolute pleasure meeting you, Taylor.
00:10:52Uh, yeah.
00:10:52Yeah, you too.
00:10:53Thank you for, you know, rescuing me.
00:10:57Uh, yeah, no, it was fun.
00:10:58It was fun.
00:10:59It was fun.
00:10:59You should do it again.
00:11:00Real soon.
00:11:01Yeah, so fun.
00:11:02Or not.
00:11:03Okay, thank you.
00:11:07Hope to see you around.
00:11:09Yeah, that'd be great.
00:11:11Why?
00:11:23Hello.
00:11:24Hey, there she is.
00:11:27Craig, hi.
00:11:28It's so nice to see you.
00:11:29So good to see you too.
00:11:31We were a little worried about the weather.
00:11:32You're glad you made it.
00:11:33Oh, yeah, more or less.
00:11:34Aunt Taylor.
00:11:36Oh, my gosh, Zoe.
00:11:38You've gotten so big.
00:11:41Hi, Christine.
00:11:42Thank you so much for letting me sit.
00:11:44Of course.
00:11:44Your house is so beautiful.
00:11:47I'm so glad we could get you to Forest Ridge.
00:11:49Yeah, it's such a nice change of pace from going to Seattle all the time, right?
00:11:53Yup, I made it.
00:11:54Four years later, here I am.
00:11:56Let me take your jacket.
00:11:57We're just happy that you're here now.
00:11:59I made you a drawing.
00:12:00You did?
00:12:01Why don't you go get it, sweetie?
00:12:03She's been working on it all morning.
00:12:05She's so excited to show you.
00:12:08How was the drive?
00:12:09Uh, it was very exhilarating.
00:12:13My car is actually in a ditch right now, but a kind stranger gave me a lift and dropped me
00:12:18off.
00:12:18Why didn't you give me a call?
00:12:19I had no signal.
00:12:21Were you scared?
00:12:23I was cold, but I'm here now and I couldn't be happier.
00:12:27Here you go.
00:12:28This is for me?
00:12:29Yeah.
00:12:30Wait, is this me?
00:12:32That's very impressive.
00:12:34She's so talented.
00:12:37You're welcome.
00:12:38Um, I'm going to need you to call a tow truck in the morning.
00:12:40Absolutely.
00:12:41Okay.
00:12:41Yeah, no problem.
00:12:42Well, dinner's almost ready.
00:12:43Why don't you get settled in?
00:12:44Okay.
00:12:45I'll show you your room.
00:12:46Yes, please.
00:12:48Yay!
00:13:14Hi.
00:13:16Hi.
00:13:16Hi.
00:13:17Guess what?
00:13:18What?
00:13:19I have a surprise for you.
00:13:21Really? Thank you.
00:13:23You're welcome.
00:13:27Wait.
00:13:29Where did I put it?
00:13:31Put what?
00:13:34My phone.
00:13:35I must have left it in the car.
00:13:39Which I will get tomorrow.
00:13:41Because right now, we have some reading to do.
00:13:44I like this one.
00:13:47That's a really good choice.
00:13:52All right.
00:13:58I thought you and Danny hit it off.
00:14:00We did. He's great.
00:14:02Except, except, I don't know.
00:14:05Living in Seattle, I just keep meeting these tech bros.
00:14:08They're all the same.
00:14:10They have their own startup, brilliant minds, awkwardly cute.
00:14:13They plan to take over the world and become millionaires by the time they're 30.
00:14:16That doesn't sound so bad.
00:14:18Yeah, except for the fact that the only books they read are on tiny little screens.
00:14:24But maybe they're right.
00:14:27Right about what?
00:14:29That as much as I love what I do, libraries are obsolete.
00:14:33Not as long as you have anything to say about it, right?
00:14:38Hey, did I ever tell you that my little sister back in high school wouldn't date a guy unless he
00:14:44could name all three brownie sisters?
00:14:45No, that's not true.
00:14:47No.
00:14:48Two out of three was okay.
00:14:50That's better.
00:14:50Oh, yeah.
00:14:50That's a lot better.
00:14:51Got to run?
00:14:52Give me a kiss?
00:14:54I'll call the tow truck when I get to work, okay?
00:14:56Okay.
00:14:57And listen, why don't you come by the graph later?
00:14:59Yeah, for sure.
00:15:00All right.
00:15:00Okay.
00:15:01I love you.
00:15:02Love you, too.
00:15:02Have a good day.
00:15:04Hey, somewhere out there, there's a guy who's going to appreciate your love of books.
00:15:12Zoe!
00:15:13Come on.
00:15:13Got a scoot.
00:15:15How are we doing?
00:15:16Pretty good.
00:15:17Good stuff.
00:15:18Um, the folks in 401 called down.
00:15:20They got a leaky faucet.
00:15:22Oh, okay.
00:15:22I'll go check it out.
00:15:23Yeah.
00:15:23And Joel Sheenan and that other fellow are in the office.
00:15:29Sounds like they're going over some more bids.
00:15:31Perfect.
00:15:32Just in time to turn the graph into Montana's newest all-inclusive entertainment experience.
00:15:36Yeah, I guess so.
00:15:37Um, so, you're coming to the meeting tonight, right?
00:15:41Yes, of course.
00:15:42Absolutely.
00:15:42But if these guys get their hands on those permits, we don't recognize this place.
00:15:49What room was that?
00:15:50Um, 401.
00:15:52401.
00:15:54Okay.
00:16:11Oh, man, am I glad to see you.
00:16:13You must be Taylor.
00:16:15Hi.
00:16:16Everything checks out.
00:16:17You might want to start it up, let her warm up a bit.
00:16:19Okay, yeah, I'll do that.
00:16:20How much do I owe you?
00:16:22All taken care of.
00:16:23Wait, really?
00:16:25Craig did not have to do that.
00:16:27Actually, it was a fellow by the name of Joel Sheenan settled the bill.
00:16:30Wait, what?
00:16:31You're good to go.
00:16:33Have a good day.
00:16:34Yeah, you too.
00:16:40Okay.
00:17:02You're looking for something?
00:17:04Oh.
00:17:08Right.
00:17:09It was in your car.
00:17:10You know, I think there's an outside chance you might have dropped this in the truck.
00:17:15I mean, losing my phone twice in one day, that's not a good thing.
00:17:18Oof.
00:17:19Well, if it makes you feel any better.
00:17:21I once misplaced a really, really big cow.
00:17:26Well, it was a little awkward.
00:17:28But I did find her, though.
00:17:30I mean, eventually.
00:17:31So, I mean, these things happen.
00:17:34That's good to know.
00:17:35Hmm.
00:17:37What happened to your truck?
00:17:38Oh, yeah.
00:17:39Uh, well, I tend to switch things up from time to time.
00:17:45And, uh, what do you think?
00:17:49I don't know.
00:17:50You seem like more of a truck guy to me.
00:17:52Do I?
00:17:54I mean, you did just tell me a story about a cow.
00:17:58It's a true story.
00:17:59I just don't know if it'll fit in the back of your auto.
00:18:01Oh, it's roomier than it looks.
00:18:04Um, listen, I really appreciate you calling me a tow truck, but I cannot let you pay for it.
00:18:09No, of course not.
00:18:10Absolutely not.
00:18:11I wouldn't dream of it.
00:18:12I mean, come on, we just met.
00:18:13It's a little forward, huh?
00:18:15But what I will do is I'm going to write my number down right here.
00:18:19I'm going to give it to you.
00:18:20What'd you do with it?
00:18:20You know, that's on your own accord.
00:18:22But I'm hoping maybe, just maybe, you'll call me.
00:18:26And maybe we go grab coffee.
00:18:29And then you can pay me back.
00:18:31What do you say?
00:18:35It's the deal.
00:18:38All right.
00:18:43Hey.
00:18:45Until then.
00:18:47Until then.
00:19:03A harvest ball.
00:19:05If we could get that on our file, then that'd be great.
00:19:07Absolutely.
00:19:08Hey, look who made it.
00:19:10Taylor, I want you to meet Samantha Wilde.
00:19:12Hi.
00:19:13It's my sister Taylor.
00:19:14So nice to meet you.
00:19:15You too.
00:19:16Sam runs the front desk and makes sure that everybody stays nice and happy around here.
00:19:20How do you like your little town so far?
00:19:21Oh my gosh.
00:19:22It is so beautiful.
00:19:23Yeah.
00:19:24And I hear that you guys have something big coming up.
00:19:26Yes.
00:19:26The autumn harvest ball next week.
00:19:28That's when we really shine.
00:19:29A ball?
00:19:30That sounds fancy.
00:19:31It used to be.
00:19:32It's way more casual now.
00:19:34It's a lot of fun for the whole town.
00:19:37Oh, excuse me.
00:19:39Hey, so I called about your car this morning and they said it was already taken care of?
00:19:43Uh, yeah.
00:19:44Looks like my kind stranger came through again.
00:19:47Does the kind stranger have a name?
00:19:48I know that look.
00:19:49No, you are not setting me up.
00:19:51I don't think so.
00:19:52All right.
00:19:52Have it your way.
00:19:55So, what do you think of the place?
00:19:57It really is so lovely.
00:19:59It's like stepping back in time.
00:20:00Yeah.
00:20:01It's over a hundred years old and all things considered, it should go for another hundred.
00:20:05Assuming we can stop it from getting completely gutted.
00:20:07What do you mean?
00:20:08There's some developers and they say they can bring more money into town if they bring in
00:20:12more businesses and tourists and stuff.
00:20:14All we have to do is turn this into a fancy new resort.
00:20:18I mean, I like it the way it is.
00:20:20Which is exactly what I plan on telling the town council tonight at the meeting.
00:20:23Oh, yeah.
00:20:24I saw the flyer at your house.
00:20:25Yeah.
00:20:26Hey, you should come along.
00:20:28I mean, I can use all the help I can get.
00:20:29Okay, yeah.
00:20:30Sure.
00:20:31Great.
00:20:32Let me show you around.
00:20:33Awesome.
00:20:34I brought an extra sandwich if you want.
00:21:03One of my favorites.
00:21:05Oh, mine too.
00:21:07I'm Joyce Kelvin, the librarian here.
00:21:10Oh, Taylor Harris.
00:21:11So nice to meet you.
00:21:12Harris.
00:21:13Ah.
00:21:14You must be Zoe's aunt.
00:21:17How did you know?
00:21:18Zoe always talks about her Aunt Taylor being a librarian too.
00:21:22She's been very excited about your visit.
00:21:24Oh, well, not as excited as I was to see her.
00:21:28Why don't I open up a card for you so you can check that out?
00:21:31Oh, I mean, that's so nice, but I've read this probably a dozen times, and I don't know
00:21:37how long I'm going to be here, so.
00:21:38While you are here, think of it like visiting an old friend.
00:21:43I love that.
00:21:45Okay.
00:21:45Thanks.
00:21:49The point is, why say anything at all?
00:21:52Look, just go to the meeting, smile nice, and let them get out their system.
00:21:59It's more important than that, you know?
00:22:01I just, I want everyone to know we're on the same team.
00:22:04It's a team shmeep.
00:22:05Listen, when those tourist dollars start rolling in, everyone's going to be your best friend.
00:22:09That's not going to be for two months.
00:22:11In fact, in the meantime, I'd like the whole town to be on board.
00:22:14All right.
00:22:15You want to make a speech, right?
00:22:18Let everyone know how much you're looking forward to going to this Harvest Ball thing.
00:22:22I mean, that's all they want to talk about anyway.
00:22:24But it happens to be a pretty big deal around here.
00:22:27Okay.
00:22:29Better idea.
00:22:31You find a date and you go to the ball.
00:22:34I mean, who's going to stay mad at you when you're tripping the light fantastic?
00:22:37Right, right.
00:22:38Right?
00:22:38I ain't tripping any light fantastic at the ball.
00:22:41Or otherwise.
00:22:44Anyways, I got some stuff here.
00:22:45You got it?
00:22:45Where are you going?
00:22:47I will see you back at the hotel.
00:22:50I got something to do.
00:22:55Taylor.
00:22:57Hey.
00:22:58Hi.
00:22:58What are you doing here?
00:23:00Uh, I had this, uh, business thing.
00:23:02It's, so, uh, how's the town treating you?
00:23:06Find your way around?
00:23:07I am, actually.
00:23:08I just stopped by the library and got myself a card.
00:23:11Oh.
00:23:12Oh, that's a good choice.
00:23:13Although, you know, I've always been more of a Charlotte fan.
00:23:17Charlotte?
00:23:18Charlotte.
00:23:19Bronze.
00:23:20Who said Emma?
00:23:22You know Jane Eyre.
00:23:24Well, we cannot forget their favorite sister.
00:23:29And how could we ever forget Anne?
00:23:31Oh.
00:23:31I love Anne.
00:23:32You're full of a lot of surprises, aren't you?
00:23:35Don't.
00:23:37Uh.
00:23:38Is that your business thing?
00:23:39Yeah.
00:23:40I gotta go.
00:23:42Sorry.
00:23:43Uh, I'll call you about that coffee.
00:23:45I'm looking forward to it.
00:23:48Bye.
00:23:56Bye.
00:23:57Bye.
00:23:58Bye.
00:23:59Bye.
00:24:01Bye.
00:24:02Bye.
00:24:02Settle down.
00:24:03As you all know, we're here to take public comments on the permit phase of the proposed
00:24:09renovations of the Graff Hotel.
00:24:11Craig Harris has asked to get the ball rolling.
00:24:14Yeah.
00:24:21Thanks, Phyllis.
00:24:22Um, I just want to say that, well, I've been working at the Graff for four years now.
00:24:28I suppose that means I know it as well as anybody.
00:24:34I didn't grow up here like a lot of you did.
00:24:36When my wife Christine introduced me to her hometown, it's safe to say that I was smitten
00:24:43with my wife too.
00:24:45Since then I've fallen in love with Forest Ridge and everything about it, especially the
00:24:49Graff.
00:24:52It's part of our history in this town.
00:24:55And I think that that's something that should be preserved and cherished, and I don't think
00:25:00it should be sacrificed for a quick profit.
00:25:08Thank you, Craig.
00:25:10I'm going to open the floor now.
00:25:12Who's next?
00:25:13Excuse me, I'd like to say something.
00:25:17Uh-huh.
00:25:36Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.
00:25:38My name is Joel Sheenan.
00:25:40Well, I'm the reason that we're all here tonight.
00:25:43You see, my company, we bought the Graff Hotel, and with these permits, we intend to make
00:25:48some pretty big changes.
00:25:51My family has a deep, deep roots here in Forest Ridge.
00:25:55So I'm doing this because I love this town.
00:25:58I've seen towns like ours grow and prosper by attracting visitors every year.
00:26:10That's the goal.
00:26:12You see, but what they realized was that as important as their history is, they can't let
00:26:17it hold them back.
00:26:19They need to move into the 21st century.
00:26:21They need to plan ahead for the future.
00:26:24And so do we.
00:26:27The plans that we have for the Graff Hotel, they're going to be good for this town.
00:26:32That's why we need this council to endorse these permits.
00:26:36It's for us.
00:26:37So we can take that next step forward and prepare for the future.
00:26:42Because we don't want our history to hold us back.
00:26:47Again, my name is Joel Sheenan, and I thank you for your time.
00:26:53I actually have a question.
00:26:55Sure.
00:26:56Isn't the Graff Hotel 100 years old?
00:27:00So that means it's eligible for a landmark status.
00:27:03For landmark status, the state of Montana says we have to prove that a significant historical
00:27:08event took place involving the building.
00:27:11That's exactly right.
00:27:12Thank you, Phyllis.
00:27:14And according to our research, there's no evidence of that with the Graff Hotel.
00:27:18Well, who did this research?
00:27:20Well, I hired some extremely reputable experts to look into it.
00:27:24You mean your company hired people to look up the landmark status for a building that
00:27:28you want to develop?
00:27:30Oh.
00:27:31You could put it that way, yeah.
00:27:33Okay, so you're saying that if we find a significant event happened at the Graff, and
00:27:37then the hotel would be preserved?
00:27:39According to the state of Montana, yes.
00:27:41Well, I don't know.
00:27:42Maybe Mr. Sheenan's idea of significant is really just in his own best interest.
00:27:47Oh, okay, okay, okay.
00:27:49Look, that's a little far.
00:27:50Phyllis, maybe we could take some time to explore this before the council makes their
00:27:56final decision.
00:27:58All right.
00:27:59This is what we'll do.
00:28:00We'll take a week to look this over, then we'll reconvene and hear what everyone has
00:28:04to say.
00:28:05Any objections?
00:28:07Good.
00:28:08Meeting adjourned.
00:28:17It's a disaster.
00:28:21You did it.
00:28:22I just got the ball started.
00:28:23I've still got to find some proof.
00:28:24Yeah, but it looks like this is really in your wheelhouse.
00:28:27What do you say?
00:28:27You want to give us a hand on this?
00:28:30Yeah, sure.
00:28:33Great.
00:28:39You made quite the impression last night.
00:28:42Everybody's talking about it.
00:28:44I got to admit, I was a little surprised the way you called out Joel Sheenan like that.
00:28:47Yeah, well, he threw me a curveball, too.
00:28:50Do you remember that kind stranger I told you about?
00:28:53Wait, that was Joel?
00:28:54Yes.
00:28:55And I can't tell Craig, obviously, because he's not exactly his favorite person right
00:28:59now.
00:28:59No, this is true.
00:29:00He seems so nice, too.
00:29:02And so down to earth.
00:29:04I can't believe I fell for that story that he grew up in Forest Ridge.
00:29:08That wasn't a story.
00:29:10Joel and I went to school together.
00:29:12Wait, you did?
00:29:12Yeah.
00:29:13We did really well, too.
00:29:15Honorable, valedictorian.
00:29:17He never really made a big deal out of it, though, so none of us really knew how well
00:29:20he did until he got a full ride to college.
00:29:23Okay, I don't understand.
00:29:24How did he get the money to buy the hotel?
00:29:26After graduation, we all thought he'd move back to the ranch to work with his dad, but
00:29:30he ended up getting recruited by some tech company in California.
00:29:35Another tech guy.
00:29:36Yeah, so we stayed there until his stock was vested, and that's how we got his startup
00:29:40off the ground.
00:29:41He has his own company?
00:29:43Yeah.
00:29:43He helped develop a couple apps that got a lot of attention, so he seems to be doing
00:29:49quite all right for himself.
00:29:51Okay, so this is what I don't understand.
00:29:53If he doesn't live here, why even buy the hotel?
00:29:56I've been wondering that myself, but I will say, I'm not surprised he stopped to help you
00:30:01the other day.
00:30:02What do you mean?
00:30:02Growing up, Joel was always the first person to lend a helping hand to anybody who needed
00:30:06it, so maybe the hotel is his way of giving back to the town.
00:30:15No, because why make all these changes that nobody wants?
00:30:17Maybe you should ask him the next time you see him.
00:30:23I can't.
00:30:23I promised Craig I would help him, and I can't do that and hang out with Joel at the same
00:30:28time.
00:30:29Besides, I need to focus.
00:30:30I have to, I have to find a job.
00:30:33Yeah, no.
00:30:34We don't want anything to distract you.
00:30:39Hey, Dad.
00:30:41I'm in town.
00:30:42Should be home for dinner.
00:30:44Heard the meeting last night got mighty interesting.
00:30:49Oh, yeah.
00:30:50News travels fast in Forrest Ridge.
00:30:53Social media got nothing on us.
00:30:57What are you going to do?
00:30:58I don't know how much I can do until we get those permits.
00:31:01I'm not talking about permits, son.
00:31:03I'm talking about all those people that need to know you're acting in good faith.
00:31:07I told them, Dad.
00:31:08I did what I could.
00:31:09I'm here to help.
00:31:14Well, the way they see it, part of their town, part of their history, it's changing
00:31:20forever.
00:31:21There's no record of anything historically significant happening at the Graff Hotel.
00:31:27Even besides me falling in love with your mother at our first harvest ball.
00:31:31Besides that, of course.
00:31:33See, that's what it's all about, Joel.
00:31:35Things people remember.
00:31:38What they wore, the song they danced to first, the way the lights shined a certain way.
00:31:45Me?
00:31:47I always remember the wallpaper.
00:31:50Wallpaper?
00:31:51Yeah.
00:31:53In the hallway, on the way to the ballroom, I remember Addie and I were on our way in.
00:31:59We were just a couple of kids, all dressed up for a grown-up fancy ball.
00:32:06I noticed the blue in the wallpaper matched the color of her eyes.
00:32:11I knew right then and there, we were going to be dancing with that ball for the rest of
00:32:15our lives.
00:32:17You never told me this story.
00:32:19I guess it's been on my mind lately.
00:32:21But with the ball coming up, and how your mother and I never miss one.
00:32:27Till now.
00:32:28I know.
00:32:31I'm sorry, Dad.
00:32:31I miss her, too.
00:32:34You want to talk about historical significance, you take a look at that wallpaper.
00:32:53Quick question.
00:32:55Did I come on too strongly about my preference for Charlotte instead of Emily?
00:33:00I...
00:33:01What?
00:33:02No, no, no.
00:33:02I mean, I get it.
00:33:03I get it.
00:33:03I can really dig my heels in when it comes to the Bronte sisters.
00:33:08You were very diplomatic.
00:33:11Okay, then I'm stumped.
00:33:13I am, because up until that point, I didn't think we disagreed about anything.
00:33:20Of course, up until the meeting, that is.
00:33:24Joel, look, when you stopped to help me, I thought you were just this nice, small-town
00:33:29guy who probably looks really cool riding a horse.
00:33:32Well, be fair.
00:33:33Be fair.
00:33:34You find the right horse.
00:33:35It's hard to look bad.
00:33:37What I didn't know is that you own your own tech company, and you drive a flashy car,
00:33:41and you can afford to buy and refurbish old hotels.
00:33:45Okay, technically, it's one hotel.
00:33:47That's probably not the point.
00:33:49No, no, the point is, is you weren't what you said you were, and you left out some pretty
00:33:56important details.
00:33:57It's just, the thing is, it's like any time I tell people what I do, or about my foundation,
00:34:02or I talk about my collection of first editions, or art, or anything.
00:34:07Wait, you collect books?
00:34:09See?
00:34:10Right there.
00:34:11That's what I'm talking about.
00:34:12You see, people see me in a completely different light, and then, it's like there's this enormous
00:34:19elephant in the room, and I have to work so hard to get around it.
00:34:23Rachel, wait, stop.
00:34:26There's something I haven't told you yet.
00:34:30There are a lot of people in this town who love that old hotel.
00:34:37You noticed?
00:34:39One of those people happens to be my brother.
00:34:43Craig cares.
00:34:48Your brother's Craig?
00:34:52Oh.
00:34:54When I'm visiting.
00:34:56That's why you came to town.
00:34:57Okay.
00:35:00So now that I know who you are, and you know who I am, I think, I think it's probably
00:35:06best
00:35:06if you just send me the tow truck, girl.
00:35:09And I'm guessing you want to pass on a cup of coffee.
00:35:16I'm sorry.
00:35:18Yeah, me too.
00:35:21Bye.
00:35:24Bye.
00:35:29And we redesigned the main floor to accommodate new shops and a restaurant.
00:35:34You can look at the floor plans to see which spaces you prefer.
00:35:36And, oh, I'll let Joel tell you about this part.
00:35:44Joel?
00:35:45Hmm?
00:35:47Uh, this way.
00:35:49My favorite part is what they call the Grand Ballroom.
00:35:57Oh, uh, it's the decorating committee for the ball.
00:36:01I told them it's okay to get started, but if you need the room...
00:36:03No, please.
00:36:04You, um, go ahead.
00:36:06All right, I'll tell you what.
00:36:07Um, in the meantime, we can go back to my office and let them finish up, and we'll take a
00:36:14look at the plans.
00:36:15Uh, how's that sound?
00:36:17Uh, would you mind escorting them, Ray?
00:36:19Oh, yeah, sure.
00:36:20Right this way.
00:36:26It's gonna look great, Craig.
00:36:30Colors.
00:36:31Yeah.
00:36:32Lights.
00:36:34Corn, man.
00:36:36It's just...
00:36:37It's corn.
00:36:38I'm gonna go.
00:36:39Okay.
00:36:39To my meeting.
00:36:40I worked with you, but I needed to tell you.
00:36:43Good job.
00:36:45I want you to forget it.
00:36:46I'm just like...
00:36:47Wow.
00:36:48See you later.
00:36:50Wow.
00:36:52Great.
00:36:52So, I'm sure you both agree that this is an opportunity of a lifetime.
00:36:57Again, thanks for coming.
00:36:58I'll call you guys next week.
00:37:09You okay?
00:37:12Yeah, I'm fine.
00:37:13What's with the sudden fascination with wallpaper?
00:37:17Yeah, I wasn't fascinated.
00:37:20Listen, buddy, you gotta keep your head in the game.
00:37:23Word's getting around.
00:37:24What are you talking about?
00:37:26I'm talking about the fact that the locals aren't crazy about this project.
00:37:30I'm getting a few calls from our potential store tenants.
00:37:32They want to know if we're still moving forward.
00:37:34Of course we are.
00:37:36Then we better make sure that this doesn't steamroll on us.
00:37:38Maybe.
00:37:39You know, maybe that's not a bad idea about you finding a date with us, Cindy.
00:37:42Hey, lay on the charm.
00:37:44Do a little schmoozing.
00:37:45Ray, I am not taking a date to the ball to make people like me.
00:37:49All I'm saying is we gotta do something.
00:37:51Hang on.
00:37:54Think about it.
00:37:56We got a lot riding on this.
00:37:57Hey.
00:37:59Okay.
00:38:01Okay.
00:38:05Are you enjoying your visit with Catherine and Heathcliff?
00:38:08Very much.
00:38:09I was thinking, my part-time librarian recently moved to Denver,
00:38:13and I've been looking for someone to help out around here, if you're interested.
00:38:18Oh, I mean, that would be amazing.
00:38:20I just, uh, I don't know how long I'm here for.
00:38:23Well, while you are here, I could sure use your help.
00:38:26That's, yeah, I, yes, I would love to.
00:38:30Wonderful.
00:38:31Come by tomorrow, and we'll get you started.
00:38:32All right?
00:38:33Okay.
00:38:33Thanks.
00:38:38I was wondering if you could help me find a book.
00:38:42Well, you see, I finished this one again.
00:38:46Jane Eyre.
00:38:47It's impressive.
00:38:48And I'm looking for something a little different.
00:38:50And I figured, who better to ask than a librarian?
00:38:55Well, I don't officially work here yet.
00:38:59Well, then we'll make it unofficial.
00:39:02I'm looking for something a little bit less romantic and more down to earth, you know,
00:39:09with people who don't necessarily belong together, but they are willing to take a chance,
00:39:14even if the odds are stacked against them.
00:39:17Well, it might not be a happy ending.
00:39:20There's only one way to find out.
00:39:24Let me give you a tour of the hotel tonight.
00:39:27Why would you want to do that?
00:39:28Because, Taylor, I respect the fact that you're standing by your brother.
00:39:32I do.
00:39:32But I also think that if you get to know me better, that you can decide for yourself, the person
00:39:38that I really am.
00:39:43So, a tour?
00:39:45Just a tour.
00:39:47Not a date.
00:39:49Come on.
00:39:51You're ridiculous.
00:39:53Um, yeah.
00:39:56Okay.
00:39:57I'll see you at seven.
00:39:59Tonight.
00:40:00Tonight.
00:40:01Oh.
00:40:03And, uh, Romeo and Juliet.
00:40:07Romeo and Juliet.
00:40:11See, the idea is to remodel and refurbish the place and still keep the feel of the old hotel.
00:40:16If you want it to feel old, why don't you just keep it the way it is?
00:40:19Nah, people still want the amenities.
00:40:21They just want them wrapped in a more nostalgic package, right?
00:40:25I hear you on the nostalgia.
00:40:28Wow.
00:40:28This looks like it's been here a long time.
00:40:30My dad still remembers it from the first time he brought my mom to the bowl.
00:40:34They used to go?
00:40:36They did.
00:40:38Every year.
00:40:40She passed away last year.
00:40:44I'm sorry.
00:40:48The first time he came here, he saw that wallpaper.
00:40:54The way the color matched my mom's eyes.
00:40:58He knew he'd spend the rest of his life with her.
00:41:03It sounds so simple.
00:41:05I mean, two people.
00:41:07I mean, two people just, no.
00:41:10I think it is.
00:41:12We're restoring two people.
00:41:17Come on, May.
00:41:19It's the best part.
00:41:25Oh.
00:41:27What's that?
00:41:29I thought you might get hungry.
00:41:33Is this part of your tour?
00:41:36Well, I can always have him take it back.
00:41:38It's fine.
00:41:40But, it's still not a date.
00:41:44Didn't say it was.
00:41:49You're Jackie, my lady.
00:41:58After you.
00:42:01Sugar is not dead.
00:42:03It's just been on vacation.
00:42:05Until you met me.
00:42:11Craig and I grew up in Seattle.
00:42:14He's actually the reason I got my first librarian job.
00:42:17Really?
00:42:18Mm-hmm.
00:42:19We were in high school.
00:42:21And this one summer, our local library was looking for a volunteer.
00:42:25And I wanted the job more than anything.
00:42:28So, Craig took the bus all the way downtown so that he could go talk to the head librarian.
00:42:35And he told them that no one loves books as much as I do.
00:42:39And that he would never have even opened a book if it weren't for me.
00:42:45He must have been really convincing because I got the job.
00:42:50And he's been there for me ever since.
00:42:53He sounds like a great brother.
00:42:55Yes.
00:42:56And very determined once he makes his mind up about something.
00:43:01This much I know.
00:43:05Craig thinks you're doing this whole thing for the town as a business deal.
00:43:11And what do you think?
00:43:15I believe you want to help the town.
00:43:18And that your intentions are good.
00:43:21But.
00:43:23But.
00:43:24Why the craft?
00:43:25Why all the extra time and money?
00:43:30Isn't there something else you can do to help the town?
00:43:36Growing up.
00:43:37My dad and I, we used to work the ranch all the time.
00:43:41And sometimes.
00:43:43We would camp out.
00:43:45Overnight.
00:43:46Just the two of us.
00:43:47We'd be under the stars.
00:43:49We'd talk all night.
00:43:51It was so special.
00:43:53I used to wish I had a magic wand.
00:43:56And I could wait and just make those moments last a little bit longer.
00:44:03You know?
00:44:05You said it's wonderful.
00:44:06That's how I feel about this town.
00:44:10And all the people.
00:44:12That if I could just wave a magic wand and make force rage the way it was when I was
00:44:19growing up.
00:44:22It turns out I'm not a wizard.
00:44:25I have a wand.
00:44:29Things are always changing, Joel.
00:44:31You're right.
00:44:33And all we can do is make sure and try to change them for the better.
00:44:38That's all I want to do.
00:44:41I want to help my hometown grow and keep all the things that make it so special.
00:44:50Like Harvest Ball?
00:44:57What are you doing?
00:45:00May I?
00:45:01Oh.
00:45:02No.
00:45:03No, I'm not.
00:45:04I'm not much of a dancer.
00:45:07Follow my lead.
00:45:12I can't believe I'm doing this.
00:45:16It's all in the hips, baby.
00:45:18What are you talking about?
00:45:26It's you.
00:45:27You're a great dancer.
00:45:29You're a great partner.
00:45:32I'm not going to argue with that.
00:45:34It's true.
00:45:36It's true.
00:45:40Listen, Taylor.
00:45:42I was wondering.
00:45:48You and me.
00:45:53Oh, my gosh.
00:45:54I.
00:45:57Why do I suddenly feel like I'm back in high school?
00:46:01Well, from what I hear, you were actually really cool in high school.
00:46:04Yeah, that's debatable.
00:46:06Yeah, that's debatable.
00:46:07I don't know.
00:46:09Okay.
00:46:12Would you like to go to the ball with me?
00:46:17I mean, seriously?
00:46:19Seriously.
00:46:25Whoa.
00:46:28Wait, Craig.
00:46:29No, I just, I saw the lead.
00:46:31I thought somebody forgot to show you.
00:46:32Craig.
00:46:33Sorry.
00:46:34Sorry.
00:46:36Sorry.
00:46:38You okay?
00:46:41No, no, no.
00:47:03Hey.
00:47:04Hey.
00:47:07Listen, Craig, about tonight.
00:47:09You don't have to explain.
00:47:10I want to.
00:47:14When my car broke down in the ditch, Joel was the guy that ended up stopping and helping me.
00:47:20Yeah, I kind of put that together.
00:47:21And he was so nice, and we hit it off, but I had no idea how you really felt about
00:47:25him until the meeting.
00:47:27I know I probably should have told you about tonight, but I thought maybe if I went and talked to
00:47:31him, I could change his mind.
00:47:32I don't know.
00:47:34I don't know.
00:47:35Taylor, I'm not upset that you danced with Joel.
00:47:38But the way you left...
00:47:40I can take that place apart and put it back together again.
00:47:43If Joel runs through this place with his plans, they won't need me anymore.
00:47:48You mean you won't have a job?
00:47:50I didn't say it, but it just makes sense.
00:47:54Once that hotel's all new and shiny, why keep me around?
00:47:57Craig, I really don't think he's like that.
00:48:00He's a businessman.
00:48:01Sooner or later, they all do the math.
00:48:03Well, you heard the council.
00:48:05All we have to do is find a historically significant thing.
00:48:10You really think that's possible?
00:48:11It's what I do.
00:48:12Besides, I know how much it means to you, and I promise you I will not stop until I find
00:48:17something.
00:48:18Did he ask you the ball?
00:48:23I haven't given him my answer yet.
00:48:26You should go.
00:48:27It's a lot of fun.
00:48:29You never know.
00:48:31This might be the last.
00:48:37You know, I know why you're here, and I completely understand, but Craig is your brother.
00:48:43You want to help him.
00:48:45You're right.
00:48:45I do want to help him.
00:48:47But I also want to go to the Harvest Ball.
00:48:50With you.
00:48:51Oh, wait.
00:48:54Wait, uh, you do?
00:48:57I do, as long as you're okay with me doing everything humanly possible to save the Graff Hotel.
00:49:03Oh, okay.
00:49:06I have to admit, this is without a doubt the most unusual offer I've ever had.
00:49:13So what do you say?
00:49:16Is it a date?
00:49:18Oh, what do I say?
00:49:20Ah.
00:49:22As long as you understand, I'm not going to go easy just because it's you.
00:49:28I would expect no less.
00:49:33Well, then, it's a date.
00:49:38A darn good one.
00:49:40I look very much forward to it.
00:49:42The best way of digging up the hotel's history was from some local sources.
00:49:47Perhaps a first person's account?
00:49:48Much better than searching the internet, yes.
00:49:52And, considering you know the area so well, I was hoping you could point me in the right direction.
00:49:56Ah.
00:49:57I may have one idea.
00:49:59Great.
00:50:02Over the years, the library's collected a kind of archive of the town's history.
00:50:08Newspapers, photographs, uh, letters and diaries.
00:50:14What are you doing with all of these?
00:50:15Well, the plan was to have it digitized and online, but, as you can see, we haven't made much progress.
00:50:22If you think it can help.
00:50:23It looks like a great place to start.
00:50:25Oh, wonderful.
00:50:26Okay.
00:50:27All right.
00:50:41Wow.
00:50:43See, I thought I was the only one who came in early.
00:50:46Yeah, well, I had some time before the library opened, so I figured I would help out with the decorations.
00:50:52Very nice.
00:50:54Do you want to help?
00:50:55Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
00:50:57That is, uh, way beyond my skill set.
00:51:00No, it's not.
00:51:01Come on.
00:51:02It's easy.
00:51:03All right.
00:51:05Sit.
00:51:07Okay.
00:51:09Okay.
00:51:11You're going to take one of these, and you are going to bend the floral wire into a J, and
00:51:16then you're going to place it right beneath there.
00:51:19The letter J?
00:51:21Yeah.
00:51:21Or, like, a little loop.
00:51:24Yeah, I think I might have single-handedly ruined the entire ball.
00:51:30Okay.
00:51:31No, let's, um...
00:51:32Glue?
00:51:33Let's try this one.
00:51:35Here.
00:51:35Let me do this together.
00:51:37Uh...
00:51:38So, we're going to take the wire, kind of bend it like this, and then we're going to weave it
00:51:44through.
00:51:47Hey, pay attention.
00:51:49Would you like to come to the ranch tonight and have dinner with my dad and me?
00:51:54Dinner?
00:51:55I don't care.
00:51:55Yeah.
00:51:57Come on, he's a good cook.
00:51:58I'd love to show you around the ranch.
00:52:00You're not too busy.
00:52:03Uh, yeah.
00:52:04I'd love that.
00:52:13Hey.
00:52:14Oh, Bert.
00:52:15That wind really cuts through you, doesn't it?
00:52:17Oh, yeah, that's nothing.
00:52:18Around here, it's not really cold until your eyelashes freeze over.
00:52:21Oh, don't even joke.
00:52:23Here, come on.
00:52:24Let me take your jacket.
00:52:25Oh, thank you.
00:52:26Of course.
00:52:29Taylor, welcome.
00:52:30Hi.
00:52:31Hey, thank you so much for inviting me.
00:52:33My pleasure.
00:52:34Um, sorry to say I'm going to have to skip dinner, though.
00:52:37One of the calves stopped taking the bottle.
00:52:39I've got to get out there and see if I can get her to eat something.
00:52:42No, come on, Dad.
00:52:42You've been outside all day.
00:52:44Look, let me go.
00:52:45Let me take a shot at it.
00:52:46You don't have a guest.
00:52:48No, I mean, this is important.
00:52:50Look, I'm sorry, Taylor.
00:52:51I think we're going to have to reschedule.
00:52:53I mean, this could take a while.
00:52:55Well, I'd love to help if I could.
00:52:57Are you sure?
00:52:59You know it's going to get a lot colder.
00:53:01You know, I think my eyelashes can take it.
00:53:05All right.
00:53:06All right.
00:53:06Let's go.
00:53:12So does this happen a lot?
00:53:14Oh, yeah.
00:53:16You know, it's always something.
00:53:18That's my way.
00:53:19Too hot.
00:53:20It's too cold.
00:53:23River's flooding.
00:53:25River's dried up.
00:53:27Sounds like a lot of fun.
00:53:29Oh, yeah.
00:53:30It's barrel monkeys.
00:53:33So, is that why you left?
00:53:35To get away from?
00:53:37I'm sorry.
00:53:38It's probably none of my business.
00:53:41No.
00:53:45It's a fair question.
00:53:47I love this place so much.
00:53:49Why leave it?
00:53:51You know, no matter how much I love Forest Ridge, I just had this feeling.
00:54:01The things I wanted in life, they weren't here.
00:54:05Does that make sense?
00:54:07I didn't even know what that was.
00:54:10But I knew that it was out there somewhere.
00:54:14And if I wanted to find it, then I had to leave the place I love.
00:54:19So, have you found it?
00:54:21What you're looking for?
00:54:23Not yet.
00:54:27Feels like I'm getting closer all the time.
00:54:39There we go.
00:54:42Oh, there we go.
00:54:44Is she going to be okay?
00:54:46Yeah, she's going to be just fine.
00:54:49You all right?
00:54:51Yeah.
00:54:53Yeah.
00:55:09Hey.
00:55:11Paul Bunyan.
00:55:14I thought you were coming into town.
00:55:16Yeah.
00:55:17My dad's got about a hundred things to do around here.
00:55:20Figured I'd give him a hand, you know?
00:55:21Uh-huh.
00:55:22Well, have you been checking your messages recently?
00:55:25My phone's in the house.
00:55:26Why?
00:55:26What's going on?
00:55:27Alan's trying to reach you.
00:55:28The whole system crashed this morning.
00:55:30What?
00:55:31Yeah.
00:55:32They need me to head back or?
00:55:34No, I don't know yet.
00:55:35Let's see what Alan says when he gets us back online.
00:55:37But besides, you need to be here for that meeting with the town council.
00:55:40Yeah.
00:55:41And the ball.
00:55:43Since when was that on your calendar?
00:55:44Yeah, I decided I'm going to go.
00:55:48Wait, with an actual date?
00:55:49As a matter of fact, Ray, yes.
00:55:52With an actual date.
00:55:53You sly dog.
00:55:55You see, now, this is what I'm talking about, right?
00:55:57Chopping wood, going to the ball.
00:55:59This is how we're going to win the hearts and minds around here.
00:56:01Wait a minute.
00:56:02No.
00:56:02No, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:56:03Don't move.
00:56:03Don't move.
00:56:04I should take a picture.
00:56:05You know?
00:56:05You and the ax for the website?
00:56:07No.
00:56:07Yeah, why?
00:56:08No, no.
00:56:08Look, I'm going to go call Alan, make sure everything's all right.
00:56:15All right.
00:56:17Hey.
00:56:18Oh, hey.
00:56:21How old is that thing?
00:56:23Um, I believe Lincoln was president.
00:56:26And somehow you still keep it up and running.
00:56:29Yeah.
00:56:30Against all odds.
00:56:32What brings you down here?
00:56:33Sam said you were down here.
00:56:35I walked Zoe over from the library.
00:56:37She's upstairs helping with the decorating.
00:56:38Yeah, I'm almost done here.
00:56:39Just hitting that and we're good.
00:56:42Okay.
00:56:43All right.
00:56:45How goes the search?
00:56:47Uh, good.
00:56:49I mean, it's going.
00:56:51There's still a couple days until the meeting and I'm hoping something turns up.
00:56:56Hey, um, sorry for getting involved in all this.
00:57:00What do you mean?
00:57:02Ah, it's just, I mean, what are we hanging on to?
00:57:06You know, a bunch of old stories and a few fond memories.
00:57:09It's, it's all right.
00:57:15Okay.
00:57:15Those are important things, too.
00:57:17Oh, I know they are.
00:57:18It's just, you heard what Joel said.
00:57:24Man, that guy can be convincing when he really wants something.
00:57:26Yeah, well, so can I.
00:57:28Yeah, you're telling me.
00:57:30Uh, hey, what's in here?
00:57:33Oh, this is the old maid's quarters.
00:57:37Wait, they lived at the hotel?
00:57:39Oh, yeah.
00:57:40Back in the day, they were on call 24-7.
00:57:43Management wanted them close, so they put them up in here.
00:57:48Do you mind if I can?
00:57:49Yeah, go ahead.
00:57:50All right.
00:57:52Uh-huh.
00:57:53Don't get in any trouble.
00:57:54Oh, my God.
00:58:22Babe.
00:58:57I find anything interesting.
00:59:01Maybe.
00:59:03The letters are addressed to Catherine Donnelly, care of the hotel.
00:59:07This must be her.
00:59:09She emigrated from Dublin and made her way cross-country to Montana.
00:59:13She worked at the Graff?
00:59:14Sounds like she was a maid soon after it opened.
00:59:17What happened to her?
00:59:18I don't know. She must have moved on.
00:59:20But she left these behind.
00:59:23Maybe we can...
00:59:25Actually, Joyce, do you have a magnifying glass?
00:59:27Um, yeah. Sure.
00:59:30Great.
00:59:32Here you go.
00:59:33Okay. So you see that woman on the right?
00:59:36I think that's Mary Catherine.
00:59:38But check this out.
00:59:39The guy in the middle, right in front.
00:59:41Who does that look like?
00:59:47Whoa.
00:59:49Right?
00:59:54Is that...
00:59:56It sure looks like him.
00:59:58Oh, my God.
00:59:59President Theodore Roosevelt.
01:00:02Oh, my God.
01:00:04Oh, my God.
01:00:04It's not real.
01:00:11Theodore Roosevelt was president from 1901 to 1909.
01:00:15During that time, he traveled all across the country while he was in office.
01:00:19I just can't find anything that says he's been in Forest Ridge.
01:00:22Well, maybe he was just passing through.
01:00:26But suppose he was here on official business.
01:00:30I think that would be a piece of history worth saving.
01:00:33Along with the hotel where it happened.
01:00:37How do we find out?
01:00:39Well, now that we know the time frame, we can just narrow down the dates.
01:00:42Okay.
01:00:43Back to square one, man.
01:00:44I think it's our best shot.
01:00:46Well, let's get started.
01:00:50Hey, Alan.
01:00:51Yeah, what's going on?
01:00:54All right.
01:00:55Yeah, no, keep me posted.
01:00:59Okay.
01:00:59All right, thanks.
01:01:02Uh, so?
01:01:03We've been caught in time, but we'll definitely act.
01:01:06Let me call him.
01:01:07I'll get on top of it.
01:01:08Hopefully it's nothing too serious.
01:01:10All right.
01:01:10I'll catch you inside.
01:01:12All right, cool.
01:01:29Hey there.
01:01:30Hi.
01:01:31Listen, I'm sorry I didn't call earlier.
01:01:34I just, well, I've been putting out fires everywhere today.
01:01:39It's okay.
01:01:39Things are hopping over here, too.
01:01:41How's our hungry cat doing?
01:01:43Much better.
01:01:44Thank you for asking.
01:01:45You know, in fact, she wanted me to, well, invite you over so she could personally thank
01:01:50you for your help.
01:01:52She did, did she?
01:01:54Listen, listen.
01:01:55I know that this is, well, incredibly last-second notice, but, um, what do you think if we reschedule
01:02:03the dinner for tonight?
01:02:04I promise you, no cattle wrangling this time.
01:02:08Sounds good.
01:02:09I'll see you tonight.
01:02:10I'll see you tonight.
01:02:16That was so amazing.
01:02:18Learn to cook on a campfire.
01:02:20It's an old Sheenan family tradition.
01:02:24A tradition that's been passed down to the next generation?
01:02:27It's hard to tell.
01:02:28It's not much on the great outdoors these days.
01:02:32Yeah, that ought to tell you something.
01:02:34So, Joel tells me that you're going to the Harvest Ball together.
01:02:39I'm really looking forward to it.
01:02:41I don't know if he told you, but that ball is another Sheenan family tradition.
01:02:45Never missed a one.
01:02:47Joel, too, when he was growing up.
01:02:50Should have seen a little tight suit and tie.
01:02:53Man, I think I got pictures around here somewhere.
01:02:56No, she doesn't want to see any photos.
01:02:59No, I sure do.
01:03:01Maybe later.
01:03:03Little fella was so shy, he couldn't get up the courage to ask a girl a dance, so he would
01:03:08ask his mom.
01:03:09Oh, God.
01:03:10Which is how he learned to move around the floor so well.
01:03:12That's so sweet.
01:03:14Of course, he hasn't been back to the ball since, uh, when?
01:03:18Since you went off to college?
01:03:19Uh, yeah.
01:03:22Guess he just hasn't met anybody he wanted to take.
01:03:26Till now.
01:03:28It's very subtle.
01:03:29Yeah?
01:03:30It's very subtle.
01:03:33Which one's your mom?
01:03:36Uh, right there in the middle.
01:03:38Well, it's just beautiful.
01:03:40Never more beautiful than at the Harvest Ball.
01:03:46And that hard-working young fella is Timothy Patrick Sheenan, my great-grandfather.
01:03:51That's the only photo we even had of him.
01:03:53Yeah.
01:03:54Where was that taken?
01:03:56Right here.
01:03:58You know, he built that cabin back before Montana was even a state.
01:04:01Cleared the land for the ranch.
01:04:04Got married.
01:04:05My family.
01:04:07And Sheenan family has been here ever since.
01:04:15There's something about this photo.
01:04:18What do you mean?
01:04:20I don't know, but I can't put my finger on it.
01:04:25I don't understand why there's nothing online about him traveling to Forest Ridge.
01:04:29I mean, he was the president.
01:04:30Shouldn't there be some sort of record?
01:04:32Maybe they didn't know he was here.
01:04:35Right.
01:04:36Teddy Roosevelt just happened to slip under the radar and come to Forest Ridge, Montana.
01:04:40Well, if anybody can get to the bottom of this, you can.
01:04:53I knew there was something about this photo.
01:04:55What?
01:04:58There's two feet of snow on the ground.
01:04:59It must have been freezing.
01:05:01And no one's wearing a coat, not even Roosevelt.
01:05:04Huh.
01:05:05Yeah, you're right.
01:05:06When I saw the snow, I assumed it was winter.
01:05:08But look at the trees.
01:05:10You're covered with leaves.
01:05:12Exactly.
01:05:12So it must have been taken in spring.
01:05:14That happens sometimes.
01:05:15We get a freak snowstorm that time of year.
01:05:17So maybe Roosevelt didn't know that and he wasn't expecting snow.
01:05:22But still, there must have been a reason he was in Montana at that time.
01:05:25So how did we find that?
01:05:26So my girlfriend, Caitlin, she works at the National Archives in D.C.
01:05:29So I emailed her the photo and she said she was going to search the records to see all the
01:05:33traveling that the president did during that time.
01:05:35Can't you find out before the town council meets?
01:05:38Fingers crossed.
01:05:38She said she would get back to me as soon as possible.
01:05:40But I think it's looking good.
01:05:43In the meantime, instead of just sitting around and waiting, I figured I would come help decorate.
01:05:47What can I do?
01:05:48Yeah, well, can you help bring in the rest of the centerpieces from the lobby?
01:05:51Of course.
01:05:56So every year the locals have this big harvest dance thing here at the hotel.
01:06:01It's actually a lot of fun.
01:06:03You want to talk about dedication.
01:06:05Joel here is so determined to win over his old hometown to make sure those permits get approved.
01:06:10He actually went out and found himself a date for the dance.
01:06:15So, hey, don't get me wrong.
01:06:16She seems very nice.
01:06:18But this might be just any old date on his arm.
01:06:21Her brother just so happens to be the leading opposition.
01:06:25So if I know my buddy Joel at all, those permits are in your bag.
01:06:51What a pleasant surprise.
01:06:53I literally just got done saying hello to our girl.
01:06:58I decided to drive all the way out here to tell you in person that I'm not going to the
01:07:03ball with you.
01:07:04You can find someone else to win over your hometown.
01:07:08What are you talking about?
01:07:09I was there.
01:07:11I heard everything.
01:07:13You know, all the things Ray said to the guys about your real reason for asking me?
01:07:18No, no, no.
01:07:20Taylor, you don't understand.
01:07:22You're right.
01:07:22I don't understand.
01:07:23I don't understand how the guy that I'm starting to care about isn't real.
01:07:28You're not who I thought you were.
01:07:31You said you weren't sure that you'd ever find what you were looking for.
01:07:37Looks like you just found it.
01:07:43Taylor!
01:07:51Ray said those things?
01:07:54You didn't speak up?
01:07:56No, Dad.
01:07:57I didn't.
01:07:58I didn't say it.
01:08:00I was in a business meeting.
01:08:02There was a time and a place, and I wasn't it.
01:08:06Some things mean more than money.
01:08:10I thought you knew that, son.
01:08:30Oh, hi.
01:08:32Hey.
01:08:35Christine told me what happened with Joel today.
01:08:37I'm sorry.
01:08:39Yeah, you were right.
01:08:41It's just another business deal.
01:08:43I didn't want to be right this time.
01:08:46What?
01:08:49When Joel drove you into town, I knew how you felt about him.
01:08:53And there's a part of me that hoped that whatever it is that you saw in him would be who
01:08:58he was.
01:09:00Yeah.
01:09:01Me too.
01:09:03But look, the council meeting's tonight.
01:09:05In one way or another, this is all going to get settled.
01:09:08And when it does, I want you to promise me something.
01:09:14Well, that depends what the promise is.
01:09:17Okay.
01:09:18I want you to promise me that you are going to come to the ball with Christine and I.
01:09:23Craig.
01:09:23Just come see what the fuss is about.
01:09:26Come to the ball and see how much this town means to all of us.
01:09:35Okay, fine.
01:09:35I'll go.
01:09:37Okay, fine.
01:09:38We'll have you.
01:09:40See you in a bit.
01:09:41See you in a bit.
01:09:47All right, Joel, you got this.
01:09:50Just give them that sunny smile and remind them how great this is going to be.
01:09:54All right?
01:09:55Oh, yeah.
01:10:11Oh, my gosh.
01:10:12It's my friend Caitlin at the archives.
01:10:14I have to get to the library.
01:10:16The meeting's about to start.
01:10:17Yeah, yeah, I know.
01:10:18Um, don't worry.
01:10:19I'll be right back.
01:10:21What do you mean?
01:10:21Taylor?
01:10:21I'll be right back.
01:10:22Don't worry.
01:10:41Thank you, Caitlin.
01:10:46Thank you, Teddy Roosevelt.
01:10:49Thank you, Teddy Roosevelt.
01:11:12All right, folks.
01:11:14Let's get started.
01:11:15As you all know, we're here to take public comment on whether the Graff Hotel should be or even can
01:11:21be designated an historic landmark.
01:11:39Craig, Craig, are you ready?
01:11:43Craig?
01:11:44Hi.
01:11:45Yes.
01:11:46Yeah, I'm ready.
01:11:47I'm ready.
01:11:47Yes.
01:11:54So.
01:11:56Is everything all right?
01:11:57Yeah, I just.
01:11:59Just have to.
01:12:01It's a little.
01:12:03I got it.
01:12:04I got it.
01:12:10In addition to all of the social events that we, uh, that we hold at the, the, the Graff, like,
01:12:18um, the Harvest Ball, which, yeah, right?
01:12:23I know we're all looking forward to the Harvest Ball.
01:12:26Absolutely.
01:12:27Yes, as I'm sure you are.
01:12:29Indeed.
01:12:30Yes.
01:12:31So, I think it's also, uh, relevant and, uh, very important to pay close attention to the, um, civic benefits
01:12:41that...
01:12:42Do you have a, a point?
01:12:43I do.
01:12:44I'm getting, I'm getting, I'm sorry.
01:12:46Okay.
01:12:53The Graff is old.
01:12:57It, it's, it's, it's the, the right kind of old.
01:13:00It's a good old.
01:13:01We have a furnace down there that your grandfather couldn't repair.
01:13:05Can you please, we've been over this.
01:13:06Being old doesn't qualify a building for landmark status.
01:13:10I'm afraid, unless you have something new to add, you're going to have to yield the floor.
01:13:17I am making a point.
01:13:18I'm, I'm, I'm making, I have several points, and I'm just, I, I'm...
01:13:21I may be able to help with that.
01:13:24Oh, crap.
01:13:27Sorry, I'm late, everybody.
01:13:33Okay.
01:13:37I think I may have found proof that shows that the Graff Hotel deserves to be a historic landmark.
01:13:44Uh, do you mind if I...
01:13:46Oh, please, yes.
01:13:48It's all mine.
01:13:54Mary Catherine Donnelly worked as a maid at the Graff Hotel from 1900 to 1903.
01:14:00We don't know much about her, except for a few letters that she left behind after she
01:14:06moved on.
01:14:08Fortunately, she also left behind some photographs.
01:14:12One in particular was very interesting.
01:14:17In April 1903, Mary Catherine had her photograph taken next to President Theodore Roosevelt's
01:14:25in front of the Graff Hotel.
01:14:27Teddy Roosevelt was in Forest Ridge.
01:14:30Mm-hmm.
01:14:32That spring, he was at Yellowstone National Park to lay the cornerstone of the Roosevelt
01:14:37Arches, which still stand at the north entrance today.
01:14:40Teddy loved this part of the west more than anything, so he decided to stay and do a little
01:14:45bit more exploring.
01:14:48What nobody was expecting was that it was going to be the coldest spring on record.
01:14:55A freak snowstorm rolled in, leaving three feet of snow, and Teddy and his entire crew
01:15:01stranded just outside Forest Ridge.
01:15:04By the time that the party made it back into town, they spent three nights at the Graff Hotel
01:15:10until the roads were clear.
01:15:11And you have proof of all this?
01:15:13I do, actually.
01:15:18Right here, I have a diary entry from Roosevelt.
01:15:23He kept one most of his life.
01:15:25And in April 1903, he wrote, snowed in at a little scrappy town called Forest Ridge.
01:15:33Stayed at the Graff Hotel, best three nights of sleep in years.
01:15:38But it wasn't just the Graff that inspired him.
01:15:43It was Forest Ridge.
01:15:47It was Montana.
01:15:48It was this entire part of the country and its people and the culture that inspired him
01:15:56while he was snowed in.
01:15:57So shortly after he went back to Washington, he decided to sign the Antiquities Act, which
01:16:05gave him and all of the future presidents the power to preserve the beautiful country of
01:16:11ours so that future generations could enjoy everything that he had.
01:16:17By making the Graff Hotel a historic landmark, we are not only celebrating Roosevelt's legacy,
01:16:25we are celebrating the spirit that makes this city, this country, so special.
01:16:43Thank you, Taylor.
01:16:46That was, well, if we didn't love our town before, we certainly do now.
01:16:52Well, now I believe Joel Sheenan would like a chance to have his say.
01:17:11I love this town.
01:17:14I do.
01:17:16It's my home.
01:17:20You know, my family's been a big part of Forest Ridge for five generations.
01:17:26Five generations.
01:17:28It's crazy.
01:17:32If they were here, I think my great-great-grandparents,
01:17:37Timothy, and Mary Catherine Sheenan,
01:17:44they'd be proud to support whatever decision this council makes.
01:18:00The request for building permits has been tabled pending our official submission to the state of Montana
01:18:07for the Graff Hotel to be granted landmark status.
01:18:28We're up early.
01:18:32I think it's about time to head back.
01:18:35I've still got a business to run.
01:18:38Besides, it's going to take a while to rework the plans for the Graff.
01:18:43You think the state will go along with the town?
01:18:45Make the hotel an official landmark?
01:18:50It's pretty hard to argue with Tay Roosevelt.
01:18:54Hmm.
01:18:56What Taylor found?
01:18:59About Mary Catherine, your great-great-grandmother.
01:19:03Kind of part of our history, too.
01:19:06Hmm.
01:19:09Harvest balls tonight.
01:19:10You don't think he could hold off leaving for one more day?
01:19:13Not that.
01:19:14I can't.
01:19:14I just...
01:19:16You know, I'm about the last person that anybody wants to see at the ball.
01:19:25Especially Taylor.
01:19:32Truth is, I'm...
01:19:36I made up my mind a go.
01:19:40It's a remembrance to your mother.
01:19:43But...
01:19:44It'll be my first one without her.
01:19:47Kind of hoping you'd be there.
01:19:50Help get me through it.
01:19:57Okay.
01:20:01We'll stay, Dad.
01:20:02But I won't drink this.
01:20:04You can't make me do it.
01:20:07It's like dirt.
01:20:14Wow.
01:20:15Look at you.
01:20:16Oh.
01:20:17Thanks.
01:20:18Sitter's here.
01:20:19Okay, great.
01:20:19I am almost ready.
01:20:21Oh, hey.
01:20:21Guess what?
01:20:23The library in Seattle called.
01:20:25And they want me back.
01:20:27Get out.
01:20:28That's great.
01:20:29I know, right?
01:20:30They want me to start next week.
01:20:32Wow.
01:20:33That fast, huh?
01:20:34I just...
01:20:34After everything you did for the town, I thought you'd want to hang around.
01:20:37Yeah, I mean, you were so right about Forrester Ridge.
01:20:40This place is really special.
01:20:42And I love it, but I, uh...
01:20:44I can't.
01:20:46I gotta get back.
01:20:47Fair enough.
01:20:47Let's make this harvest ball one we'll never forget.
01:20:51Yeah.
01:20:52Perfect.
01:20:53Look at that.
01:20:55There you go.
01:20:56It concludes the lock.
01:20:58I agree.
01:21:05Cast your visions and bring them back to shore.
01:21:13Come on, make a move.
01:21:16There's another world outside your door.
01:21:19Oh, my God.
01:21:23Hang on, make a move.
01:21:25Stop moving in your God.
01:21:28Oh, my God.
01:21:30Oh, my God.
01:21:31You can't take good control of all that you are inside.
01:21:38Oh, my God.
01:21:40There's another world outside.
01:22:11I owe you an apology.
01:22:15Ray.
01:22:16Joel told me you heard what I said to our investors.
01:22:20I'm sorry.
01:22:22I just got so caught up with the pitch, I didn't realize I was coming between you and Joel.
01:22:26I mean, it wasn't your fault.
01:22:28Joel could have said something.
01:22:29Trust me, he did.
01:22:31The moment those guys were gone, he told me taking you to the ball had nothing to do with business.
01:22:36Really?
01:22:38I mean, I didn't...
01:22:40I had no idea.
01:22:45Well, now that everything's settled, I got to get back, but I didn't want to leave without telling you.
01:22:51Thanks.
01:22:53Wait, where is Joel?
01:22:54Someone spoke with him, he said he was heading to California.
01:23:06Joel, hey, it's Taylor.
01:23:08Look, I just spoke with Ray and he told me what you said and that you really wanted to go
01:23:13to the ball with me.
01:23:14And that that part of you that I really wanted to believe in was real.
01:23:19Just like you said that you were finding what you were looking for out there somewhere.
01:23:23I...
01:23:26I've been looking too.
01:23:28And I know that I have found it here with you.
01:23:32Anyways, I'm still at the graph and I'll wait for you.
01:23:36Look, just please, please don't leave.
01:23:40Okay, bye.
01:23:45You were right.
01:23:47Business or not.
01:23:50I should have spoken.
01:23:53You didn't leave.
01:23:55Gus, look at you.
01:23:59Come here.
01:24:05I couldn't leave without saying, I'm sorry.
01:24:17You're showing me my great-great-grandmother's face for the first time.
01:24:23You know, I recognized her name from the marriage certificate.
01:24:28But we never had a photo of her.
01:24:33Until now.
01:24:35Well, if I knew who she was, I obviously would have told you.
01:24:38Seeing them like that, just...
01:24:42I guess it made me wonder what it was like for them.
01:24:46They were starting out together.

01:26:46Oh, love, I'll never let you go.
01:26:55My heart is where it always was.
01:27:03Oh, love, I'll never let you go.
01:27:35Oh, love, I'll never let you go.
01:27:38Oh, love, I'll never let you go.
01:28:33Oh, love, I'll never let you go.
01:28:36Oh, love, I'll never let you go.
