Gov’t, LGUs urged to shift to micro data centers for faster, standardized digital services

Local government units (LGUs) and national agencies should consider shifting to micro data centers to improve service delivery and IT system management, an industry expert said during the launch of Cannovate Micro Data Center in Makati City on May 5, 2026. Paul Jason Lapus, director for Smart and Secure Infrastructure Group at Microgenesis Business Systems, said micro data centers offer a standardized, all-in-one solution that enables faster and more efficient implementation of digital infrastructure.

00:00So micro data center is actually the terminology for something in terms of technology-wise that maximizes small power.
00:10So anything between 1 to 3.2 to 3.6 to 1.
00:14When you look at micro data center solutions, in itself, when you look at the system and the attractiveness in
00:24terms of the positioning, it's mostly for edge facilities.
00:27So faster deployment, branch implementation, something that you can roll in, use existing power, nothing that you have to plan
00:35for, and then be able to deliver resilient, monitored, and powerful tool to manage your IT systems.
00:46So micro data center as a technology is an all-in-one system.
00:50So putting standardization as a priority in building facilities moving forward, micro data center is actually a perfect tool.
01:01So similar to what Canovate is providing, this is something that you can roll in, something that you can develop,
01:07expand.
01:08And then, of course, in terms of delivering the promise, it's something that you can roll in much quicker, much
01:14faster.
01:15Okay, sir.
01:16Sir, so do you think micro data centers can realistically operate in rural or off-grid areas in the Philippines?
01:24Oh, yeah, definitely.
01:26Because when you look at rural and off-grid facilities, let's say, when you talk about areas wherein electricity starts,
01:35data centers are quite complicated in terms of the functionality, monitorability, and, of course, the management of IT facilities.
01:46Micro data centers are rolling systems, all-in-one, incompatible, so something that can be delivered as a whole system.
01:54So micro data centers can be plugged, and then, at the end of the day, get the benefit.
01:58So micro data centers is actually something really positioned for rural and unique areas that need power protection, stabilization, and,
02:11of course, IT systems.
02:13So, sir, last question.
02:15Do you think it is time for the national and local government units to switch to micro data centers like
02:21Canovate, especially the LGU?
02:24That's a very good question.
02:25My take is that when you look at empowering the LGU, when you look at types of technology, micro data
02:32centers such as Canovate is something that they need to look at.
02:35It's something that empowers them to actually deliver services, allows them to manage systems better.
02:42At the end of the day, in terms of cost standardized, in terms of management standardized, in terms of all
02:49-in, end of the day, very quick, faster implementation, the LGU gets the benefit.
02:55And then, looking at also edge facility, edge facilities are somewhat something that will not die.
03:02Because at the end of the day, big data, compute, you will need, or end users will still need the
03:08ability to manage their own IT infrastructure.
03:10So, micro data center facility or IT facilities like this will definitely benefit it.
03:16Sir, how about the supporting factors like this one, the Canovate?
03:22For example, since micro data centers na siya, from my point of understanding, paano siya mag-operate?
03:30For example, there's in-power interruptions like mentioned earlier.
03:34Are there cloud supports, something like that?
03:37No, no.
03:37So, when you look at infrastructure, there are specific elements that you have to have for a data center.
03:44Racking system would be number one.
03:46Power, cooling, distribution, fire, security, and access.
03:55So, ultimately, these are things that you have to think about.
03:58Your question is primarily power protection.
04:01So, having a UPS as part of a micro data center facility with all the elements gives you that ability
04:09to manage much better.
04:11So, having a UPS, having a redundant system UPS gives you that edge, gives you that protection.
04:17Similar with cooling.
04:18So, cooling already attached to the rack allows you to better manage the cooling and requirements of the IT systems
04:24that go inside.
04:25So, a lot of these elements have to be present when you talk about data center solutions.
04:30And the micro data center system that kind of it just provides you with all of that in-compassing with
04:35one specific rack cabinet solution that can be rolled in.
04:39Thank you so much.
