07:24straight 22 years of hurt oh dear who are you mac horton what do you do mac over this summer
07:36you're swimming you look like you've just got out the pool i think i'm most scared of
07:40the unknown is that hard work it's warm i've swum for 17 years i've won olympic gold but that's all
07:49something that you can train for i've never been tested like this you will address us at all times
07:56from now on as staff do you understand that yes we have shared blood sweat and tears
08:05tears for our country so pathetic people like you can have your life sas selection is the toughest
08:13military test in the world it takes the one percent of the best one percent to create a special forces
08:20operator you the english from the beautiful motherland and you the australians the colonials
08:31from down under you're gonna get a real sample of our world the aussies call us whinging poms and
08:38we call them prisoners of mother england do you understand yes we'll now find out we're the
08:47greater nation walk forward to the railings
09:00the first task of selection is an emergency evacuation drill in a life-threatening scenario
09:10pay attention to what's going on because obviously you
09:12fuckers are going to be doing it in a minute
09:18lowered from a height of 260 feet the recruits will be harnessed in pairs into the plane's fuselage
09:31once fully submerged they must hold their breath for 30 seconds and remain seated until the time is up
09:42the recruits must exit through the rear side door in an agreed order to pass the task
09:51the possibility of drowning is a real risk in the special forces it's absolutely terrifying every part
09:58of their body will want to eject themselves out of that seat and get out of that situation
10:08it's paramount that they're composed and work as a team you go in that seat over there you go in
10:15this
10:16seat here the first recruits to face the dunk our olympic swimming champion mac and tv personality gabby
10:24i think people are going to be really surprised when they see me on the selection because they know me
10:28as gabby from love island who just sits there in a bikini talking about feelings all day
10:33keep the composure keep talking i'm going to show them a very different side to me
10:38what about this if i fail in the water task i will be disappointed my reputation
10:48hangs on it i might regret saying that i'm petrified water just control yourself it's no big deal
11:00last breath
11:24it's a panic she's panicking
11:38in a special forces survival drill recruits mac and gabby must hold their breath underwater for 30
11:47seconds until given the signal to escape
11:54she's panicking
11:59having been unable to hold her breath
12:03stop okay gabby has failed the task
12:10fail confirmed fail she panicked and had to be pulled out through the window yeah okay
12:14roger that i weren't scared about the height weren't scared about the water and then i
12:18fucking didn't take in big enough breath what the fuck
12:24probably better to be a little bit thirsty as opposed to having a full mouth yeah
12:30holy shit the next pair of recruits to take on the task
12:34is actor natalie and social media personality jack
12:40relax
12:42if you can't swim you're pretty fucked on this
12:46i don't think being in the military was ever an option for me i am scared of everything
12:55flying confrontation large crowds claustrophobia bugs insects spiders remain in the position till you get
13:04out of the squeeze once that fear kicks in it's too late
13:17that's good stay relaxed
13:45i'm so happy
13:48i'm so happy
13:49i'm so happy
13:49fuck off not you it's okay breathing in
13:59don't panic you chill i'm not chill i've been involved in helicopter crashes
14:06it is an absolutely horrific experience
14:10a crashing into water if you survive the crash you're then in an environment that wants to kill you
14:16it's very difficult not to panic your body's telling you you need to do something because you are going to
14:22die
14:25your lungs are screaming and then you can feel the emotion almost flood your system
14:47you have to be able to calm down and then think logically about what you've got to do
14:55you then go through a process of getting yourself out of it
14:58you're going to die
15:11you never think you're going to die
15:17fucking dial in do what you're meant to do come over to me last to take on the
15:25dunk his former neighbors actor Ryan and TV personality Danny all right now I'm
15:32petrified physically I've got this mentally is what I'll struggle with my
15:37brain attacks me all the bloody time I really want to cry but I don't want to
15:40cry I just want to believe in myself a little bit more and stop being a negative
15:46Nancy we're gonna breathe out get rid of all that carbon dioxide I would describe
15:51myself as pretty full-on here we go I can lose my temper quickly yeah I can get
15:57quite frustrated we are strong we are calm I'm shaking the thing that I will
16:02struggle the most is if people don't take it serious enough and go hard enough
16:07there's every chance I'll tell him to pull the fucking finger out yeah fucking
16:12concentrate and switch on you know remain composed focus on what you're doing we
16:22are strong and we are calm we're going to take a deep breath and we're going to be
16:27fine we're going to both undo I will go first
16:53did someone just come out already
17:00both will fail pathetic it's probably panic just like I did catastrophic fail
17:12that was a dire effort wasn't it why'd you panic as soon as the wall hit me I was like
17:17I can't do it
17:18expected more from you toad fish making made for this in yeah mister embarrassing
17:31there were only two passes out of all of you there and the rest of them were fails some of
17:37them catastrophic so let's start switching on taking on board the information and applying it
17:52all right what shit show I don't know how long a little life that was hard yeah instantly I failed
18:17this way in and around between the chains the recruits have been brought to a remote desert fort
18:25where temperatures can reach over 40 degrees English this side Aussies that side it will be their home
18:33for the remainder of the course right now you will become a number do you understand that yes sir the
18:42desert is a brutal environment it just makes life almost unbearable strip out of that civilian kit
18:50let's go hurry up no reason to be shy from the minute you get up to the minute you are
18:56able to go back to
18:57sleep the heat just hits you it drains you of energy it feels like you're being suffocated by the
19:03country upside down fucking buffoon you're susceptible to heat injuries whether that's dehydration
19:11heat stroke exposure whatever let's go go quickly don't be lost if you do not conduct yourself in the
19:20right way it will kill you they're gonna wish they're fucking somewhere else right this is your
19:26accommodation underneath that camouflage net over there that is water that will be continuously topped up
19:31the one thing I say about your water bottles they will always be topped up to the brim and I
19:39mean the
19:39brim okay yes stop all right fucking cheer up if you look like you're having a good time you will
19:44have a good time even if we're a bunch of fuckers yeah this is absolutely nuts in it yeah
19:54that's will you do my water bottle when you're ready thanks babe sorry I'm being fit
20:00oh just make sure you're refilling it yeah yeah
20:05huh hey guys can I grab everyone's attention so if you if you look on the bag here got these
20:12clips here
20:13so if you do them up and you tighten them right down you'll have less jingle jangle
20:20yeah yeah all right cool happy days he's pretty serious isn't he
20:28huh I was gonna say that to you entire day
20:34anybody stands out yeah number 12 ryan maloney he's so keen and wants to make a good impression that he's
20:41overdoing it yeah probably number four because she's just like no she's a little bit sort of
20:47underconfident she's not physically imposing like five's the same size but five's actually fit
20:53whereas four's a little bit fragile I think three a bit a bit of a dope just not listening properly
20:59and number one because he's a bit twitchy in it he's like yeah I think 12 is gonna get roasted
21:05you know like when you're in the old dorms on selection there's always some knobber
21:09who thinks he knows better knows it all and then by day two telling you what you should have in
21:16your
21:16bird that's right recruit 12 coming oh my god right I knew it a couple times 12
21:31concerned about his character the DS want to learn more about number 12 ryan
21:45how's it going in there it's good actually I'm uh going through periods of you know fear and kind
21:54of going up and down and throwing myself into it as best as I can and learning the rules first
22:01um the challenge is get the shit out of me
22:06so where did you grow up uh in Melbourne yeah what was wrong like uh yeah growing up it's interesting
22:15you know um a pretty shit aggro childhood but you know it's kind of the way it is um so
22:24we'll just
22:25leave it at that but you know got a gig on neighbours at 15 years old and then I'd kind
22:30of stay there for 30 years that's a fucking long time to be someone else yeah how do you think
22:38that's
22:38shaped you uh it's a very hectic time when you go to work and you're in this headspace for 12
22:47hours
22:48and then you go home and you do you try to do family life and then you learn your lines
22:53for the
22:53next day so you're you're right there so you don't really get a break from it but for a very
22:57very long
22:58time I've been pushing myself to kind of go oh so there's neighbours but I've got to have something
23:04else so you sell and buy properties and build farms and build houses and you know building places is
23:10one of the most stressful things you can ever fucking do and kind of constantly moving family
23:14around and just the ultimate stress after stress after stress after stress just hadn't really
23:21had a break so it's that pedal pedal pedal pedal and nothing's ever good enough um
23:38just kind of found myself
23:45oh fuck sorry I wasn't expecting this to come out I apologize
23:53found myself standing in a paddock going if this is it
23:56I don't want I don't want to do it anymore and uh
24:04and then it was okay all right well that's not the answer um I need to work out what's going
24:11on
24:11with my head and then I was diagnosed with ADHD
24:17was it the um the diagnosis that that's helped you
24:22once I kind of got that diagnosis it was like that's the best fucking news I've ever heard
24:27because now I understand why my brain does what it does because now I now I get why
24:36I see things very differently
24:40so what what are you hoping to get from this you know what I actually don't know I don't know
24:45what
24:45this is going to bring out I don't know like I didn't fucking know that that was going to come
24:49out so
24:50I just I just want to find out
24:52well you look strong I'm excited to see how far you'll go on the course
24:55it's going to be difficult though
24:59stick with it
25:11no one's unbreakable I've broken many times you gotta break to to get stronger
25:20before I got diagnosed with ADHD there was a lot of pressure and stress
25:24stress on life just that constant feeling of of being lost
25:28I can see you're in the zone
25:31ah no it's just like wasn't expecting that to come out
25:34oh it's incredibly important to be able to understand what's actually going on in your brain
25:41when you feel like you want to quit on life don't just find an answer if that's not the one
25:47find another one
25:49and don't quit
25:50no we're good
25:53we're good
25:54you should
25:55yeah
25:55you want to sit over there and just chill be quiet
25:57we're good
25:58I'm here mate if you need it
26:07oh my god what is that
26:10are you okay
26:11is it dangerous
26:12yeah it bites
26:13yeah home run
26:14bang
26:15I think you got it
26:16nice
26:16I did get it I did get it but it's fucking over us
26:19recruits five minutes full kit
26:23come on area
26:25has everyone got a full water bottle
26:27quickly
26:28coming to you guys
26:28quickly
26:30what do you like being called
26:31Ryan
26:32Ryan
26:32I didn't want to start saying fucking toady because I'm so used to seeing you on the telly
26:36that's right man
26:40you still do like being back at school innit
26:41it is yeah
26:42like a teacher shouting it yeah
26:44I quite like it that it's fun
26:47I'd say there's definitely mistakes I've made throughout my life and because of this
26:52I've kind of been living way too much in my comfort zone
26:56those bags are heavy then
26:58they are so heavy
26:59I'm hoping that I can overcome those fears
27:04I need a big challenge
27:06if I managed to get through this I think it would help a lot
27:11close the guards
27:13close the guards
27:14the next task will subject the recruits
27:17to one of selection's most brutal rituals
27:23everything you do in the special forces world is preparing you for combat
27:26fall in right there facing me
27:28it's absolutely horrendous physically and mentally
27:33some will crumble
27:35some will shine
27:38turn around
27:43it's pretty well fucking known
27:45there's always rivalry between the English and the Australians
27:49in the special forces world
27:52we have to work together closely
27:54now and again there's resentment
27:57that is soon put to bed
27:59we have a method of doing that
28:01it's called milling
28:03we fight and we use sheer violence and aggression
28:08you're not just fighting for you
28:10you're fighting for your nation
28:14right listen in
28:16number 12
28:19toward fish
28:20get over here
28:21take my comforts out
28:23first to fight is recruit number 12

28:30his opponent is number one
28:32social media personality
28:34Cole
28:35I stay fit
28:36by going to the gym
28:37maybe four or five days a week
28:40you know I think I can protect myself in a fight
28:43I can be pretty aggressive
28:45if that's the game then that's what we're doing
28:47what are you going to do?
28:49I'm going to rip his head off
28:50not a fucking chance
28:51and if the rules are
28:53you've got to smash him
28:54well then
28:56giddy up
28:57it was simple
28:58I will say fight

34:20I thought you said start, sir.
34:21What did I say?
34:22Stop.
34:24There's only two commands.
34:25Did anybody hear me say start?
34:27No, sir.
34:30Right, because of that, it's a draw.
34:35That was horrible. You had to do it.
34:49Take 50 before 50. Get beaten the shit out of. Awesome.
34:53Obviously, like...
34:55Don't worry, you were fucking punched like a beast.
35:00You all right, Jack? You're upset, ain't you?
35:02You're sorry.
35:03Sorry, how about you?
35:04It's hard for that.
35:05No, I know.
35:07But I didn't try and go with my heartache.
35:09No, I don't think you did.
35:10But when I went like that, I was like, oh, fuck now.
35:14Yeah.
35:14I didn't really...
35:16Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:17Imagine you ate it and then she was off the coast, then I'd get it.
35:20But she's fine.
35:26Has everyone got full water bottles and shit?
35:29Hey, can I also suggest, because it's a fucker to fill these up all the time,
35:34that we just keep them filled up and if we're thirsty in here, we just use our mugs.
35:38So much easier.
35:46Okay, so...
35:49Day one.
35:50Milling.
35:51The Aussies versus the English.
35:52Chief instructor Billy and his DS have gathered to assess their new recruits.
35:59Number one and number twelve.
36:02One and twelve, yeah.
36:04One was Mr. Freaking Sugar Ray Leonard.
36:06I mean, he was all about it, you know, before the punches started.
36:09When twelve, we started banging his gloves together.
36:11Fucking what was I...
36:13What's going on, man?
36:14Cuckoo!
36:16Anyway.
36:17The next bout was number five.
36:19Thirteen.
36:19And number thirteen.
36:21That turned into a bit of a disaster.
36:23Number thirteen.
36:24She took two or three punches in the stomach and then went into fucking Funderbird's puppet with the strings cut.
36:30And that was a win for number five.
36:31The final fight was number three.
36:33And ten.
36:34Number ten.
36:36Man v. woman.
36:37He was obviously better, but then the way he conducted himself at the end...
36:42Yeah.
36:43...I wasn't willing to give him a win.
36:45No, and that was a good call, mate.
36:46Good call, mate.
36:48And if you can't control yourself and fucking see Red Mist, which is what he did, he's a liability.
36:54Anyway, I think it might be worth having a look at number three.
36:58Yeah.
36:59I agree.
37:03Number three!
37:05Oh, I'm not...
37:06They're gonna shout at me for not being ready.
37:08You've got thirty seconds!
37:10I'll come with you.
37:10Come on.
37:11No, I'll go.
37:12I'll go.
37:12I'll go.
37:13Go on.
37:19Sure you're appropriately fucking dressed, number three.
37:22Come here.
37:23Having shown a lack of discipline in the previous task,
37:27the DS want to find out more about number three.
37:30Jack.
37:38Adopt a normal breathing pattern.
37:41You fucking sound out of breath.
37:43Yes, sir.
37:46Are you nervous?
37:47Yes, sir.
37:50How's it going in there?
37:51It's been really hard.
37:53I'm really not a fan of heights, and the milling just absolutely sent my head into a spiral.
37:59Why?
38:00I said before I came on here, if I had to bite a girl, that might be one thing that
38:06makes me quit.
38:08And, er...
38:09You did the complete opposite.
38:11I know I did.
38:12And I felt guilty, I felt stupid, because I obviously didn't pay attention to the instructions.
38:18And I think that's one thing I've noticed, is that I'm not great at listening, it seems.
38:23With the milling, we put you in that situation, you had to deal with it.
38:28Yes, sir.
38:28So, just take us right back to the start.
38:31How was your upbringing?
38:34Parents were super supportive of everything I did.
38:37So, I'd say, yeah, my childhood was fairly privileged in that sense.
38:42What was school like?
38:45I did fairly well in school.
38:47A bit of a goody two-shoes, to be honest.
38:50But after college, it wasn't quite the same.
38:52Why not?
38:55My dad, he's ex-military.
38:57So, as you can imagine, he's very much, play it by the rules, don't try the fast way forward.
39:03Slow and consistent.
39:05But I was young, naive, and I didn't pay attention.
39:08I was very fit.
39:10You know, super lean, fairly muscly.
39:13People in my family are bodybuilders, natural bodybuilders.
39:16My dad's super into it.
39:18And I went to a bodybuilding gym.
39:21And I hear a lot of talk of this supplement, which is like a legal steroid.
39:29So, I bought this supplement from her website.
39:33And, yeah, after six weeks, I had liver failure.
39:39Out of the fucking liver failure.
39:42I went all yellow.
39:45Pupils all yellow.
39:46So, my brain completely just went south.
39:51It's a hard thing to describe.
39:54I had to go into hospital every day for about nine, ten months to give blood every day.
40:01And I had to be under supervision.
40:04So, the way you pass away with liver failure is, I was told that you just go to bed at
40:10night and you don't wake up.
40:12And it was hard because every night, every single hour, my parents came in my room to check if I
40:21was dead, basically.
40:23And that broke my heart.
40:30Do you find yourself beating yourself up about this?
40:34Yeah.
40:34You can see that.
40:38It's hard to see your parents with that kind of emotional weight when you know you've caused it, no way.
40:46Does it still have an impact?
40:48Yeah. I mean, since then, I'm quite an anxious person.
40:53And that's kind of why I came on this course.
40:56I hide my emotions a lot.
40:58Even my parents, my friends, they don't really see it.
41:03How does your father feel about you, his son?
41:05Yeah.
41:05Who obviously nearly killed himself coming onto an extremely challenging course.
41:12It'll probably piss him off if I quit.
41:14That is one thing that's kind of keeping me here, to be honest.
41:17So, this is kind of like a personal thing for me.
41:22What matters is what's in your heart, what's in your head.
41:25Yes, sir.
41:26Guard!
41:34Walk.
41:39In a really, really strange way, I'm glad it happened to me.
41:43Before that, I was under the impression I was invincible and nothing could hurt me.
41:48I could do anything and it would go right.
41:50But when you're hit with, you might die at 19, you realise that anything could happen.
41:57That's done.
41:59Right.
42:00You got a lot to give.
42:01You got a lot to learn.
42:02It's fucking tough.
42:03Stick with it.
42:04Go and get them.
42:04Thank you, sir.
42:05You've really got to respect and appreciate this life you're given and not take it for granted because it could
42:11be taken at any moment.
42:18I've got a fucked up story.
42:20Yeah.
42:21It'll blow your mind.
42:22Okay.
42:25Um, once I was having sex and I shat on the guy's nuts by accident.
42:32I shat on his nuts.
42:34You shat on his nuts.
42:35I was like, super.
42:37It stinks in here.
42:42What can you do?
42:45Get to the shower now.
42:49Does anybody know what the time is?
42:50It is 9.08.
42:52Can I suggest you take this time to fill up your water bottles, make sure your bags are all packed
42:57and that there's less stress for you if they call us?
43:01Yeah.
43:04Roger that.
43:09Guys, the DS is coming.
43:11Get up, pray!
43:15With the day almost over.
43:17Fuck me.
43:18The DS call a shock inspection.
43:21Quickly.
43:21Quickly, fast as you can.
43:23Fuck, hell.
43:24Quickly!
43:26Let's go.
43:27Get that top on now.
43:28Get your top on.
43:30Run.
43:31Tuck in your shirt, Frank.
43:36Right, everyone take your water bottles out.
43:37Undo the lids.
43:38Hold them out in front of you.
43:45Put it away.
43:49Just throw it away.
43:51Over your head.
43:53Tip it over your head.
43:54Fucking hell.
43:55Day one.
43:56Tip it over your head.
44:07Being in the Special Forces is all about doing the basics to a very high standard.
44:12When we say to the brim, we mean to the brim because that fucking millimetre counts. Is that clear?
44:18Yes, sir.
44:19We're living in the desert.
44:20It's fucking hot.
44:22It's about having the self-discipline to adhere to the minutest of details.
44:27Let's go.
44:2820 burpees.
44:30Pays to be a winner.
44:31Let's go.
44:31As soon as you're done, straight over to the water tank.
44:33All right.
44:34It proves that you are someone that doesn't cut corners.
44:38As fast as you can.
44:41Because on the battlefield, you'll get killed.
44:44We can't afford those sort of people to be in our units.
44:49In and out!
44:50On your numbers!
44:52Turn it.
44:55Let's go, 12!
44:57Let's go, Niner!
44:58Hooray!
45:03Make sure you take your water bottles.
45:05Make sure they're full up.
45:06Make sure you're prepared to go again.
45:08Go!
45:09Let's go!
45:19Everyone fill up their water bottles.
45:22Oh, God!
45:28Did you have to pour it on yourself?
45:30Oh, shit!
45:34Fill up your fucking water bottles first!
45:42Use your cups to drink in here.
45:45So you've always got a full fucking bottle.
45:49He runs a place.
45:50I feel like he's another DS, don't you?
45:51Runs a place.
45:53What's your name again?
45:55My name is fucking pissed off.
45:57Because now I've got two fucking wet things of clothes.
46:00Because people haven't fucking filled up their water bottle.
46:02When all day I've been saying to do it.
46:04So, yeah, I'm pissed.
46:07I know I'm not a fucking DS, but I'm one of your teammates.
46:12Nice way to talk to everyone, isn't it?
46:22Next time.
46:23Oh, that is a massive ship.
46:25It's like the size of my forearm.
46:27Down in the ditch, let's go!
46:29You're in the mud.
46:30You're crawling around.
46:31Covered with rats.
46:32Covered with human faeces.
46:33I'm stuck!
46:34Just to get close to the enemy.
46:35It's like the tunnel's giving birth.
46:37But that is all it will take in order to survive.
46:40This is Hell's front door.
