00:00to the big story of the day in baseball.
00:01And I suppose if you're the Tigers right now,
00:06you really are just hoping that Tarek Skubal can come back
00:10at the end of the season if you're in it,
00:11because this is just devastating in a lot of different ways.
00:14Number one, to the team, because they
00:15have high aspirations to compete.
00:17And then the business of baseball steps in, Jack,
00:20because if the Tigers were not doing well,
00:22you could find a world where Skubal could have been moved
00:25to some other team to help them compete for the future.
00:28All of that is out right now.
00:30And the injury, to be honest with you,
00:32is a little murky when I hear loose bodies in an elbow.
00:35I'm not even really sure what that means.
00:38Yeah, so I'll tell you, loose bodies is something
00:41that is a bit more like, so it's arthroscopic surgery.
00:43It's a bit more cloudy than a standard UCL injury,
00:47but it's also better news than a standard UCL injury.
00:50An arthroscopic surgery to address loose bodies
00:53means that the UCL is intact.
00:56And if the UCL gets torn, that's when guys get Tommy John surgery
00:59or they get the internal brace procedure.
01:01So that's the thing that, like, will actually throw a guy off.
01:04Edwin Diaz, the Dodgers, a couple of weeks ago,
01:06he went down, he had surgery to address loose bodies in his elbow, too.
01:10So these are things that are just kind of, like,
01:12literally how they sound, loose bodies.
01:14They, like, fragments of bone that are just kind of floating around
01:16that could do some damage to the UCL and you want to get them out.
01:20Bad news is that's about a three-month rehab process,
01:24three-and-a-half month if Scooble's looking at this.
01:26So he could be back at the end of the year,
01:28and he will be back at the end of the year.
01:30But we're talking about probably a post-deadline return for Scooble.
01:35And to your point, Craig, like, that is the first kind of business
01:37of baseball thing that jumps out.
01:39If the Tigers do slide, the value of Tarek Scooble as a rental
01:44goes down drastically.
01:45So we're talking about a guy that the Tigers may have even entertained
01:50moving this offseason for a king's ransom,
01:53coming off back-to-back Cy Young Awards.
01:54First guy to do that in the American League since Pedro Martinez.
01:57Like, we're talking about a pitcher trade return that we've never seen before,
02:01probably something close to, like, the Juan Soto trade return.
02:04But with Scooble now, it's not like you can ship him off of the deadline.
02:08The other thing is I feel terrible for Tarek Scooble.
02:11We were talking about this guy that, I mean,
02:14he won an arbitration case.
02:15He's making more money than any pre-free agent pitcher
02:18has literally ever made in a given year.
02:20He's making $32 million this year.
02:22So we're talking about a guy that was in line
02:25to possibly get a $400, $450 million contract.
02:29What does an elbow surgery in your walk year do to that number?
02:34Does it drop it from $450 to $350?
02:36You're still the highest-paid pitcher ever,
02:38but that's $100 million that we're leaving on the table here.
02:41We're talking about huge sums of money as it pertains to Tarek Scooble right now.
02:46This is a little bit more of a kind of thing that sticks around,
02:46I'm going to do a tail for you.
