00:00Part of the reason people are so invested on what happens to Indy, the question of does the dog die?
00:05I think it does speak to the I think what horror movies have trained us to think happens to most
00:10dogs in horror movies, which is to say it's the whole film is built on this trope of, you know,
00:16hey, you know how your dog, you know, suck your own dog might stare into an empty corner.
00:21Or, you know, how in horror movies, there's that dog who's always suspicious of the basement or suspicious of that
00:26weird old neighbor.
00:28Usually that dog in horror movies doesn't make it out of act one.
00:30This is obviously a film entirely about Indy.
00:33So we're expanding that story, you know, quite a bit.
00:37But in terms of like, are we surprised by the reaction?
00:40I mean, yes, I think so.
00:41But it's been delightful.
00:44We certainly think our dog is really compelling.
00:46I think everyone thinks their own dog is the cutest, most compelling dog in the world.
00:50So maybe my wife and I are going to be a little warped now.
00:54But no, it's been delightful to see that people are this invested in Indy and his story and outcome.
00:59You know, you did kind of say, oh, no, he doesn't die just to let you guys know.
01:04Was that like something that you had to be like, OK, I need to like, can you talk about if
01:08that was like a debate in your mind to let people know?
01:10Well, I would say something my co-writer and I were always thinking of is that horror movies work best
01:16when the stakes feel real.
01:18And, you know, usually with human talent, that means, you know, you're trying to get the audience to see their
01:23own lives on screen so you can relate to, oh, a scary thing is happening in this house.
01:28It looks like a house I've lived in.
01:30That makes it feel scarier.
01:31I think we were always trying to thread the needle of people are familiar with the trope of dogs and
01:37horror movies, and we want there to be a real sense of danger.
01:41We knew the ending of the movie.
01:43We knew Indy was going to, you know, make it.
01:46But we still wanted audiences to feel like this is really, you know, you know, dangerous and threatening.
01:52I mean, it's probably not so different than I think people know when they go and see a Mission Impossible
01:56movie, Tom Cruise isn't going to die.
01:58But the filmmaking still has to let you think he might fall off that airplane and die potentially for real
02:04when you're watching Mission Impossible.
02:06So it's it's a different way to solve a kind of similar problem.
