00:01Hello, I'm Jeremy Vine and I do urge you to step away from the remote control, don't touch that dial,
00:06hands off the Betamax VHS and DVD, resist all temptation to pause the show, because I'm about to oversee four
00:13reasonably responsive celebrities as they peruse their way through our palace of perplexing puzzles. This is Celebrity Puzzling.
00:38Hello, welcome to Celebrity Puzzling. As always, first order of business, meet our team captains. Well, she's a giant puzzling
00:46fish in a small puzzling pond, Carol Vorderman.
00:50And here to get one over on Carol is a woman who claims she can still do the splits. Let's
00:56cancel round one, I'd rather see that.
00:58It's Sally Lindsay. I can, I can.
01:01But which puzzle-hungry celebrity will be joining in tonight? Well, alongside Carol is a man sure to make a
01:07big impression, John Cullshaw, whom we love.
01:11And with Sally is a comedian who once had a job licking envelopes. The job was boring, but the pay
01:16was first class.
01:17Hey! Stephen Bailey! Welcome!
01:21So nice to have you on the show, John.
01:23It's great to be here. I'm looking forward to a bit of mental agility in a space that looks like
01:27the TARDIS.
01:28Yes!
01:29Well, I always, when, it's the thing about being an impressionist, is people always say, go on, give us your
01:34favourite one.
01:35And I guess you must have a favourite, do you?
01:38Well, I think that at the moment, the Darnold, every impersonator has to do the Darnold, like every DJ has
01:43to have the Beatles.
01:46I've got Lewis MacLeod, my great pal, and we love to compare notes about how to do you. Now, Lewis
01:52does you, that sort of way.
01:57I tend to, maybe do it a bit quicker, a little bit like that.
02:00A bit of up and down, I'd love to get your thoughts on this.
02:04LAUGHTER
02:06He does it better than me, him and Lewis do it better than me.
02:10You are the new David Prost, everybody needs to do you.
02:13LAUGHTER
02:14It's so hard.
02:16Now, Stephen, you know you made it when someone says, OK, Stephen, we got your impression of you.
02:20It's coming, my friends!
02:21Oh, I don't even know if I want to hear someone's impression of me.
02:25By the end of this show, John will have you.
02:27John will have you take.
02:28I sound like a retired female smoker.
02:31LAUGHTER
02:32It's an audible smile, your voice, I can tell that already.
02:35Can you do it yet?
02:36It's a lovely thing.
02:37I might be able to.
02:37This is an opening sort of gambler.
02:39LAUGHTER
02:42It's like looking in a mirror.
02:44It really is.
02:45You were telling me some good news.
02:46You're doing some work with one of the greatest writers.
02:49I am.
02:49Russell T Davies.
02:50Yes.
02:50And he does quite serious dramas.
02:53Can you give us an outline?
02:55Yes, in the new Channel 4 series he's doing Tiptoe, that's out later this year,
03:00with Alan Cumming and David Morrissey.
03:02Wow.
03:02I'm feeling myself about this.
03:03I feel very fancy.
03:06LAUGHTER
03:07I am.
03:08I feel very, like...
03:08You are fancy, fancy.
03:09They filmed it in Manchester, ten minutes from my house, Canal Street,
03:12so obviously I knew everyone there.
03:14LAUGHTER
03:14And I feel also very, like, smug, because it's one of those where
03:19I can't say anything yet.
03:21LAUGHTER
03:21Well, that is good that you told us that much.
03:23Great.
03:24All right, now our players are about to face random puzzles
03:27that should come as no surprise to them.
03:29If it does, they should probably fire their agents.
03:31No two episodes feature the same puzzles.
03:33Now I sound like John Kelshaw doing an impression of me.
03:36All the celebs need to do is solve as many of them as they can.
03:40Ideally, they'll build up a big old lead before our final round,
03:43Answer Bank.
03:44Because in Answer Bank, and this is close to being a catchphrase,
03:46it can all switch around.
03:47For the winning celebrity, there's more.
03:49They will get to take home this.
03:51Ah!
03:53The celebrity puzzling, puzzling cube, as it's known for Sean.
03:56And there's a picture of Sally.
03:58You can wobble Sally's head.
04:00There we are, Sally.
04:01Give your head a wobble.
04:02There we are.
04:03Or Carol's, or mine.
04:05There we are.
04:06So, with all the disclaimers and the caveats complete,
04:08let's feast our eyes on round one.
04:10The temperature's about to reach boiling point for our first game.
04:13It's called Heatmap.
04:16This is how it works for each puzzle in this round.
04:18The players are shown an image on a QWERTY keyboard.
04:21Above the keyboard is a category.
04:22This is just an example.
04:23Gary Oldman TV series.
04:25This is nice.
04:25Now, if it's green, it means it's in it once.
04:28If it's orange, the letter's in twice.
04:30If it's red, three or more times.
04:33So, just as an example, you can give it a thought.
04:37It's slow horses.
04:38Slow horses, yeah.
04:39It's brilliant.
04:40It's really good.
04:40Yeah, it's a lovely premise.
04:42Sally and Stephen, you're up first.
04:43Here's your first puzzle.
04:44We're playing for real now for two points.
04:46Here's the keyboard.
04:48Oscar-winning US actress.
04:51And the E is in it at least three times.
04:53Oh, OK.
04:53There's a Z here, darling.
04:57Renee Zellweger.
04:58Yes, it is in it.
05:00I think, because of the Z, and because of the 47Es,
05:06I think it is...
05:08What did you say, dear?
05:09My fight was Renee Zellweger.
05:11Yes.
05:12All right.
05:13Let's give it a shout.
05:14Renee Zellweger.
05:16How many E's have we got?
05:18We've got six E's.
05:19Yeah.
05:20And a Z can be helpful, can't it?
05:22Yes.
05:23Funnily enough.
05:24Carol and John, here's your first one.
05:26The category, tree.
05:28Oh, tree.
05:29A tree.
05:29OK.
05:32There's at least three Ws.
05:35I've got two Weeping Willow.
05:38Yeah, that's it.
05:39That's it.
05:41I'm very happy with that.
05:42We're going for Weeping Willow.
05:43Yeah, yeah.
05:43All right, you're going straight there.
05:44You're happy with that, John?
05:45Yeah, that's...
05:46I'm very...
05:47I'm delighted with that.
05:49Is it Weeping Willow?
05:52Yes.
05:54Again, the proliferation of Ws,
05:57or the provenance of Ws,
05:58or the...
05:58What's the word I'm looking for?
06:00The preponderance of Ws.
06:02Helped you there.
06:03Very fancy.
06:04OK, Sally and Stephen, here's yours.
06:07South America.
06:08What is it, a country, a thing?
06:11Is it a place?
06:14Chile, Brazil...
06:17Erm...
06:18Hmm...
06:19That's really hard.
06:20Isn't it?
06:21Two As.
06:22Two As.
06:23Two As.
06:23Two As and three Ls, or over three Ls.
06:27What's that beautiful statue called?
06:30Ah!
06:32I think it's that.
06:34I don't know what it's called.
06:40I don't know.
06:41Sorry, it's escaped me.
06:43Sorry.
06:43All right, no answer.
06:44No, sorry.
06:45So we give the other side a chance to steal.
06:48For a point.
06:49No, just because of the Ls and the As,
06:51I was going to say Galapagos Islands,
06:53but obviously it isn't.
06:54Oh, I like the idea of that.
06:55Let's just try it.
06:56Galapagos Islands.
06:58No.
06:59No.
07:00It's not actually a country name.
07:01That's the key thing.
07:02Let's have a look.
07:04Angel Falls.
07:05Oh, OK.
07:05I wouldn't have got that.
07:06It is the highest waterfall in the world.
07:09Oh, OK.
07:09It is in Venezuela.
07:12Carol and John, here's your next one.
07:13You can take the lead with this.
07:16Also and Politician.
07:17Oh, heck.
07:18Could be quite a few of them.
07:20Right.
07:21Saucy novels nowadays, don't they?
07:23I think I might...
07:24I might know.
07:26Oh!
07:26Oh!
07:27That was quick.
07:27I think this author and politician speaks in this sort of tone.
07:32I think, you know, he's quite sort of obstinate like that,
07:36talking under arched eyebrows.
07:39Is it Geoffrey Archer?
07:41Is it Geoffrey Archer?
07:42Jay.
07:43Yeah.
07:43Very good.
07:44Very good.
07:46The only books you sell?
07:47450 million.
07:48Wow.
07:49Yeah.
07:49He's behind JK Rowling, who's behind Agatha Christie,
07:51but he's at the top.
07:52He's at the top.
07:53Well done, John Kelshaw.
07:54That is Geoffrey Archer.
07:55You've got it right.
07:56So, a little bit of pressure on Sally and Stephen.
07:58Yeah.
07:58Oh, no.
07:58Don't want to get too wrong in a row.
07:59Here's your next one.
08:00Here's the keyboard.
08:01OK.
08:02US President.
08:04Oh, gosh.
08:07Oh.
08:08OK.
08:09OK.
08:09So, there's at least three A's.
08:13Er...
08:13Oh, I think I know it.
08:16So, I think it's a president in my childhood.
08:19I think.
08:21It was an actor.
08:23Ah.
08:23Ah.
08:24I think it's Ronald Reagan.
08:25OK.
08:26Is it Ronald Reagan?
08:28Yay.
08:29President.
08:29Oh, I tell you who can do a Ronald Reagan.
08:31I bet you can.
08:32Oh, no.
08:32Go on.
08:33Do it.
08:33Do it.
08:34That was one of the greatest.
08:36The logic of war seems to be if a belligerent can fight, he will fight.
08:40Oh, my gosh.
08:41That's bell on.
08:42That's bell on.
08:42Ronald Reagan.
08:43Carol and John, your next puzzle.
08:45Thanks, Geoffrey.
08:45OK.
08:47Beverage.
08:48Beverage.
08:49And at least three E's.
08:52Er...
08:52I was going...
08:53A couple of G's.
08:54I went for gin and tonic.
08:55That says a lot about me.
08:57Can we have one?
08:59Yeah.
09:00That's so good.
09:00Is it one of the 1027 names for coffee?
09:05Er...
09:05Could be.
09:15Er...
09:15Uh-huh.
09:16Might it be, er...
09:17Could it be ginger beer?
09:19Ooh!
09:20Might it be that?
09:21Lashings of?
09:22Lashing long.
09:23Lashings of!
09:25Got it.
09:26John got it.
09:27OK, John.
09:28Er...
09:28Lashings of ginger beer?
09:30Ginger beer is it.
09:32Oh, well done.
09:32It should be gin and tonic, but we'll have them.
09:34I know.
09:34It's close to being, isn't it?
09:35Is it ginger beer?
09:36Yes.
09:37There we are.
09:39Right.
09:40At the end of that round, it is Sally and Stephen for...
09:44Oh, no.
09:44Carol and John heating it up.
09:46Six.
09:50Very dramatic game, isn't it?
09:52What do you think, John?
09:53I'm just waking up and figuring it all out, you know.
09:57Oh, bless him.
09:59Bless Ozzy.
10:00So nice to hear.
10:01Keep doing that impression, it's great.
10:03Are you beating our celebrities so far?
10:05So it's time for our teams to try to win some more points
10:08as they play a game over at the letterbox.
10:10And this one can be a bit tricky to follow.
10:12It's called Pathwords.
10:16This is how it looks.
10:17You are going to see three rows of five jumbled letters
10:19which must be rearranged to complete three words.
10:21Letters highlighted are locked in place
10:23while the letters on physical tiles are those to be rearranged.
10:26In this case, you rearrange the black ones, the darker ones.
10:29So they can only be moved vertically within their column.
10:33That's the key thing.
10:34So have a look.
10:35What would we do there?
10:36So the first word starts with an S and M, it's with a K.
10:38So I think the first word is...
10:40Shirk.
10:41Shirk.
10:42Shirk!
10:42So you're moving the H-I-R up.
10:44OK.
10:45So shirk, yeah, that looks good.
10:46It goes green, hopefully.
10:47Raven.
10:48Oh, then raven.
10:49Raven.
10:49And then lunch.
10:50Yeah.
10:51There we go.
10:52Simple as ABC.
10:54Hope that helped.
10:55You are against the clock here to complete all three words.
10:57Sally and Stephen, you're leading.
10:59Let's take you over to the letterbox to play Pathwords.
11:05Sally and Stephen, in your first puzzle, the first letter of each word plus two extra
11:09letters will be locked.
11:10Once you're happy, press the buzzer for three points.
11:12Here's your first Pathword.
11:14Your time starts now.
11:15OK.
11:16F.
11:17Erm...
11:18Er, OK.
11:19Yeah, F-U could be a thing.
11:20Shall we do...
11:21Shall we do this one first?
11:22Yeah.
11:23So is it...
11:24Er, what's O?
11:26G...
11:27L...
11:28What's that?
11:30Gumbo.
11:31Oh.
11:32OK.
11:32So then, er, what's that?
11:36Erm...
11:37Pig...
11:37Me.
11:38Oh.
11:39Pig me.
11:40Flora.
11:41Oh, I like the way you did that.
11:43That was so...
11:44It was baffling me, because the, the wise, as we know, a stinker has called us out many times.
11:49I'm sick of them wise.
11:50Gumbo is quite an unusual word.
11:52It's actually, I, I really like gumbo.
11:54Is it a spicy soup, is it?
11:55Yeah, and it is, it is weirdly weird, but it, man, yeah, the family member used to make
12:00it, and I actually know what it is.
12:02Flora and fauna, flowers, in other words, and pig me.
12:05Two Ys in pig me.
12:07Horrific.
12:08Yes.
12:08We got that one.
12:10It's gonna get harder as we lock one letter fewer.
12:13For your trouble, this is worth four points.
12:15Here it is, your time starts now.
12:19OK, so...
12:20Could it be ton something?
12:23Er, tonic.
12:25Tonic.
12:26Tonic.
12:26Tonic.
12:26OK, so...
12:29Er...
12:30Clang?
12:30Clang?
12:31Is that a word?
12:31Karma?
12:32No, that's not right.
12:33No, that's not right.
12:33Er, so, so it's gotta be a, erm...
12:36Karma.
12:37Karma.
12:38Karma.
12:39Clang.
12:40All right.
12:40OK, I see what you did there.
12:41So it was calm and clang, but the other way round.
12:43It was, and I guess...
12:44One tonic was tonic.
12:45Who knew that clang was spelt with a C and not a K?
12:48There we go.
12:49Perfect.
12:49Tonic, karma, clang.
12:51What a good selection of words.
12:53It's because, as Carol was saying earlier, gin and tonic.
12:56Yes.
12:56So some things that are my realm.
12:58RenÃĐe Zellweger, South America, not for me.
13:01Yes.
13:01Politicians, not for me.
13:03Gin and tonic.
13:04Gin and tonic, for me.
13:06We're cracking up the difficulty in the third puzzle.
13:08We will only lock the first letter per word.
13:10The correct answer is worth a whopping five points here.
13:13Wow.
13:13Your time starts now.
13:16ECH at the front.
13:18OK.
13:19What about hype something?
13:23Oh.
13:24Oh, no, that's not right.
13:25Hyper?
13:25Oh, no.
13:26That's not.
13:26OK, let's see.
13:28Let's find one word first.
13:30So E-T.
13:32E-T.
13:34E-Thor?
13:36No.
13:36Ethos.
13:37Ethos.
13:38Ethos.
13:38Ethos?
13:39OK.
13:40Hyde.
13:42Hyde.
13:43Hyde.
13:43Hyper.
13:44Hyper.
13:45Oh, no.
13:46See...
13:47See, that's not right.
13:49No, that's not right.
13:51Oh, sy!
13:52Sy!
13:53Ten seconds.
13:55Sy...
13:56Sy...
13:56No, it's not.
13:57So it's...
13:58Hairs...
13:59Cedar!
14:01Cedar!
14:01OK, do it.
14:02Cedar!
14:03Oh!
14:04God, no!
14:05Oh!
14:05I thought you were heading for Cedar, but Ethos is a good spot really early on.
14:10Yeah.
14:10And should have lined you up, but we had too many options here, didn't we?
14:14Ethos, Cedar, Hyped.
14:16Oh, what a shame.
14:16Don't worry, it's not the end of the world.
14:18It's serious.
14:20But it's not the end of the world.
14:21How did you get home?
14:23Did you beat our fantastic celebrities?
14:25Well done, Sally and Stephen.
14:26Your trip to the letterbox has scored you seven, although not the maximum.
14:30Carol and John, are you feeling confident?
14:31John?
14:33It's if they pop out, isn't it?
14:34You either see them or you don't.
14:36Yeah.
14:36That's what we always say.
14:37That's a good catchphrase.
14:38Yes, they pop out, you either see them or you don't.
14:41That's a brilliant...
14:41That's our catchphrase.
14:43That is our catchphrase.
14:43That's it.
14:44OK.
14:45Before Carol and John play Pathwords, it's time to take a short break.
14:47Why not use this opportunity to tick a few things off your bucket list?
14:51Better be quick, though.
14:52You only have three minutes.
14:53See you after this.
14:57Have a go at this Pathwords puzzle.
14:59Swap the letters in just one column to reveal the answers.
15:03Choose wisely.
15:11Did you manage to solve this Pathwords puzzle?
15:14If you got these answers, well done.
15:21In John's great phrase, let's see if they pop out.
15:24I'm Jeremy By.
15:27Here we go.
15:28Katyn, Sally, Lindsay and Carol Vorderman have been joined by some very fabulous cohorts,
15:32John Culshaw and Stephen Bailey.
15:34So, they're fighting tooth and gorgeously manicured nail for victory.
15:37It's fixing to be an absolute belter of a battle.
15:40Carol, John, you're going to try and bank some points now with your turn at the letterbox.
15:43Remember, you're going to see three rows of letters which must be rearranged
15:46to complete three new words, but you can only move tiles vertically within their column.
15:51Once you're happy, hit the button.
15:52Your time starts now.
15:54Okay.
15:56So, what's that?
15:57That would be an I, would it be?
16:00Um...
16:01Wiper.
16:02Yeah.
16:02Wiper is a word.
16:04Nice one.
16:05Uh...
16:05What's that?
16:06M...
16:08O...
16:10Um...
16:10Motto.
16:11Motto.
16:12Scrap.
16:13Beautiful.
16:13Well done.
16:14Yes, wiper.
16:15These are funny.
16:15We'll do five-letter words.
16:17We'll come up with funny words.
16:18Yes.
16:19Mottos an odd word.
16:20Yes.
16:21Two O's, two T's.
16:22Yes.
16:22Well done.
16:22That's your first one.
16:23But the difficulty increases as we lock the first letters and only one extra letter.
16:28This is for four points now.
16:30And your time starts now.
16:32FML at the front.
16:34Okay.
16:35Right.
16:37Uh...
16:38Let's see.
16:38Let's see.
16:39Mango's not an actual word, is it?
16:42Mango.
16:44Mango.
16:45Oh, right, I'll do that.
16:45Yes, wonderful.
16:46Let me put that back in the right place.
16:49Okay.
16:50Mango.
16:50Yeah.
16:50And then I think that's fight.
16:55What does that lead?
16:56Lucid.
16:57Lucid.
16:58Lucid.
16:59Yes.
17:00The famous punk band.
17:02Mango.
17:02Fight, mango, lucid.
17:03Yeah.
17:04Terrific.
17:04Okay.
17:05It gets harder again.
17:06This time I will only lock the first letter of each word.
17:08Solving the puzzle is worth a huge five points.
17:10If you're ready, your time starts now.
17:14EJs at the front, that's all you get.
17:17Let's try that.
17:18Uh...
17:19What would that be?
17:20Jire, jire, jippit, jippit, jippit, jippit.
17:23Right.
17:24What's up there?
17:25Done.
17:26Hmm.
17:27S.
17:28N.
17:29Snoggy.
17:30Snoop.
17:31Right.
17:32I'm going here with Snoop.
17:33That's one word.
17:34Snoop.
17:35Yeah.
17:35What would that be?
17:41Jiggy!
17:42And Doobie!
17:44Duvet!
17:47How about that everyone?
17:49Oh, no.
17:50It's going to help you because they got their third one.
17:52Jiggy is, does it mean just get a bit sort of, um, antics?
17:57Restless.
17:58Yeah, yeah.
17:58I hear you, I hear you.
17:59Jiggy.
18:00Jiggy with it.
18:01Getting jiggy with it.
18:02Okay.
18:03Alright, Duvet, Jiggy, Snoop.
18:05Yes.
18:06Please head back to your seats, we will check the scoreboard.
18:13How many puzzles did you solve at home?
18:15Carol and John, your visit to the letterboxer scored you 12?
18:18The maximum!
18:20Let's see what he's done for the overall scores.
18:22And I can tell you, Sally and Stephen on 11.
18:26Very good.
18:26Scooting ahead a little bit, Carol and John on 18.
18:33How would Tony Blair celebrate that achievement?
18:36John?
18:36You know, we mustn't get carried away.
18:38There's still a lot more to do.
18:40There are more rounds to observe.
18:42So we will keep our resolve and see what comes next.
18:48And would Gordon Brown be cross about it?
18:52I think praise must be given to Carol,
18:56who found those answers very quickly
18:58and saw instantly where the tiles should be
19:01and came in on budget and on time.
19:04That's brilliant.
19:06OK, let's see what the next game is going to be.
19:08Blink and you'll miss this one.
19:09It is called Word Flash.
19:13In this round, you're going to be given a category
19:14followed by some of the answers.
19:16Your job is to fill in the full answers.
19:18So, example.
19:19Country is the category here.
19:20Yeah, and we see the words sort of arriving and leaving
19:23and gradually getting more and more obvious,
19:25but they're not at the start.
19:27So it's three of them.
19:28Oh, I think...
19:28Go on.
19:30What do we think here?
19:31It's a three-word country.
19:35Papua.
19:35Papua New Guinea.
19:36Papua New Guinea.
19:36Yes.
19:37It looks as if it's Papua New Guinea.
19:39Let's see if it is.
19:39Yes, it is.
19:40There we are.
19:40That's how you do it.
19:41But the thing is, we're on the buzzer.
19:43Oh, no.
19:44And you're buzzing against each other.
19:46Carol, John, Sally, Stephen, are we ready?
19:49Fingers on buzzers.
19:50Here is your first one.
19:52Passenger.
19:59Eight letters.
20:00Six letters.
20:02Just two words for you.
20:04Got an AC together.
20:08RI together.
20:09One ends in a T.
20:13It's not enough yet, is there?
20:14Oh, hang on.
20:17Stephen.
20:17Backseat driver.
20:19Backseat driver, he says.
20:22Yes.
20:23Stephen, well done.
20:25I need you to...
20:26Very good.
20:27Very good.
20:27They're annoying, aren't they, Carol?
20:29You ever have that on a plane?
20:30Backseat driver?
20:31Yes, you do in a plane.
20:33Do you?
20:34Someone behind you.
20:34But then the good thing,
20:35because everyone has to wear headphones,
20:36obviously, when you're in a light aircraft,
20:38you can switch them off.
20:42Fingers on buzzers.
20:43Here's the next one.
20:45Singer.
20:49Five letters.
20:51Three letters.
20:53Then five.
20:57John.
20:57Billy Ray Cyrus.
20:59Is it Billy Ray Cyrus?
21:01Yes.
21:02Yes.
21:04The father of...
21:06Miley.
21:06Miley Cyrus.
21:08Get ready, then.
21:09Here's the next one.
21:11Ed Sheeran's song.
21:16Six, two, and three, and four.
21:22Four words.
21:22Oh, yes, Stephen.
21:23Castle on the Hill.
21:24Castle on the Hill, he says.
21:26Love.
21:28Hey, good.
21:29You're a fan?
21:30Yeah, I love him.
21:32I do, too.
21:32Yeah.
21:33I like to listen to him and I feel a bit sad as well.
21:35Do you know when it's raining and you could just do your own montage?
21:38Yeah.
21:42No, he's really good, he's really good.
21:45OK, Action Stations, time for another.
21:49Horror film.
21:52Five letters.
21:53Two letters.
21:55Then three.
21:57Then six.
21:59Oh, blimey.
22:00Then four.
22:05Oh.
22:06OK, there's an of.
22:09Carol.
22:10Now, I don't like horror films at all.
22:13I've never watched one, but I think it might be Night of the Living Dead.
22:16Oh, well done.
22:18Could it be Night of the Living Dead?
22:21That's right.
22:25OK, here's the next one.
22:31It's four letters.
22:34Oh, then six.
22:36Five.
22:39Three words, then.
22:41Four letters, six and five.
22:48Oh.
22:49Oh, Sally.
22:51Wall Street Crash.
22:52Yeah.
22:52The Wall Street Crash.
22:53Could it have been?
22:56Yes, it was.
22:57Good play.
22:59Pingers on buzzes.
23:00Here's your final one.
23:02Game.
23:03Oh, no.
23:04Here it is.
23:05Come on.
23:05This is it.
23:06Very important moment in the game.
23:07In our game.
23:08So it's a seven letter.
23:09Then a three.
23:11Then another seven letter, three words.
23:14Stephen.
23:15Noughts and crosses.
23:16Noughts and crosses.
23:19Yes.
23:22So, at the end of that round, Sally and Stephen have, let's see, 19.
23:27In that quarter.
23:28Harold and John are still a bit ahead, though.
23:30We're falling back slightly.
23:3122.
23:35Yeah, they did the old rope-a-dope, these two.
23:37Pretended they were out of it.
23:38And then they're back in.
23:40Were you quicker than our celebrities on the buzzer?
23:42I hope you enjoyed playing it at home.
23:44OK, time to briefly put this genie back in the bottle.
23:47We'll see you after the break for much, much more celebrity puzzling.
23:53If you want to keep puzzling, see if you can pick which letter to move one space up or down
23:57in the alphabet to solve this up or down puzzle.
24:00Best of luck.
24:07Have you figured out which letter to move to solve this up or down puzzle?
24:12If you did, well done.
24:18Welcome back to Celebrity Puzzling.
24:19For those of you who have already forgotten, I am Jeremy Vine.
24:23Time to single out some of our guests for extra special punishment.
24:26John and Stephen are about to be put through the celebrity guest puzzler head-to-head.
24:31And the game in question is up or down.
24:35So, Carol and Sally, you can feel very pleased you're out of this one.
24:37I know you didn't like this one.
24:38You can rest your little grey cells and zip that so you don't whisper.
24:43You let your teammates take the strain now.
24:45Here's how it works.
24:46You will see a clue plus a series of letters on the screen.
24:49The clue here is hobby.
24:51Now, each letter has been moved either up or down by one step in the alphabet.
24:55So, the J could be an I or a K.
24:58If you've got two letters, like the H's and the O's,
25:00in this example, they will move in the same way both times.
25:04So...
25:05Got it?
25:06I've got it.
25:07Go on.
25:09Knitting.
25:09Let's see if it's knitting.
25:13Yes!
25:15Very good.
25:17So, there we are.
25:18Knitting is the answer and that's perfect
25:19because I'm expecting a bit of a needle in this round.
25:22Well done if you've got that at home.
25:24Here we go.
25:25You're first.
25:26Only our guests remember.
25:29Five letters.
25:30Bank account.
25:32The I can be H or J.
25:36I-P-O-S.
25:38Ends in something else, not an S.
25:42Bank account.
25:44Joint.
25:46Joint.
25:47Joint.
25:48Ah.
25:49Oh, I say.
25:51Very good.
25:52Very good.
25:53Fingers on buzzers, here's the next.
25:57Six letters against.
26:00A T, a V at the beginning, T or V.
26:04Two R's.
26:06R at the end, but not an R.
26:08Ah.
26:11John.
26:13Versus.
26:14Versus.
26:14I say.
26:15Oh, wow.
26:15I think you're right.
26:17Versus.
26:18John.
26:19Very good.
26:20Versus, which is usually short of the V, S or V, isn't it?
26:23OK, get ready, here's the next one.
26:27Six letters, kitchen item.
26:29Right.
26:29Now, let's have a think here.
26:30I've got another J.
26:36D-S-S, double S.
26:39Those two S letters are the same.
26:41Stephen.
26:42Kettle.
26:43Let's see, is it kettle?
26:44Oh!
26:45Yes!
26:47The Bailey, pot's black, well done.
26:50Action stations, time for another.
26:53So, six letters.
26:55Rugby.
26:55Oh, goodness sake.
26:56Starts with an H or a J.
26:58Yeah.
27:05So, double letter there, double Ns.
27:07Both will be the same letter, whatever they are.
27:10LFQ.
27:13Oh, yes, Stephen.
27:15Is it a hooker?
27:17Is it a hooker?
27:19Yes.
27:21Hooker's a position rugby.
27:23I know that right now.
27:24Is it now, but I'm not good on my rugby.
27:26Carol knows her rugby.
27:27Yes, they're in the front row of a scrum.
27:29That's it.
27:29They're in the middle.
27:30And they, when the ball is put into the scrum,
27:33they hook it with their feet.
27:35So, they're called the hooker.
27:36And traditionally, they can be the shorter person, can't they?
27:38Because they're lifted.
27:39Aren't they lifted by the other two?
27:41Well, they're still big boys.
27:43Yeah.
27:44Excuse me.
27:44Would I be able to have two points for that?
27:47Because I don't know anything about rugby.
27:51That's a really difficult one.
27:52Let me just ask the producer.
27:54I can't repeat that on here.
27:56Here is the final one.
28:01Eight letters.
28:03Stimulant starts with a C or an E.
28:09Because the D is there.
28:14John.
28:15Caffeine?
28:16Is it caffeine?
28:18It might be.
28:19Yes, it is.
28:20Well done.
28:22Well done.
28:24Well done.
28:25What a good bit of play from both sides, actually.
28:28John and Stephen.
28:28John, you scored six.
28:31Stephen scored four.
28:32Very good.
28:33Let's look at the totals, then, for each team.
28:37So, Sally and Stephen have got 23.
28:40And you're slightly behind Carol and John, who've got 28.
28:44That's all right.
28:45It's fine.
28:46It's fine.
28:46It's fine.
28:46And we've got a contest here, haven't we?
28:48I hope you managed to get a few of those at home.
28:50If you did, well played.
28:51Well hooked.
28:52Our next puzzle tonight is, and I can't think of a better way to put this, in other words.
28:58All right.
28:59I'll explain.
28:59I'll show you the initials to the answer.
29:02There we are.
29:02Two initials.
29:03BS will be an example.
29:04Written inside each initial, you'll see what we call synonyms.
29:07From the synonyms, you work out the word.
29:10So, B is mouthful, nibble, taste.
29:12S is magnitude, measurement, proportion.
29:16What do we think of that?
29:19Bite size.
29:20Bite size, says Stephen.
29:22Just the example.
29:23Let's have a look.
29:24You're going to want a point for that now.
29:26Can I have a point for that?
29:26No, you can't.
29:28I always wonder if Patrick Moore, Carol, had seen that game, what would he have made of it?
29:34Well, I think it's very beautifully coded, and of course it would be very useful on the International Space Station,
29:40where things have to be simplified and symbolised very quickly.
29:42Oh, you're so good, John.
29:45Oh, you've really taken me back.
29:48I know.
29:49For anyone who liked the sky at night who remembers that.
29:51Yeah.
29:52Wonderful.
29:53Okay, Carol and John, I'll let you start.
29:55Here is your first In Other Words.
29:57Carol and John for one point.
29:59MD.
30:01Spread, repast, dinner, agreement, promotion, bargain.
30:04Other words.
30:06Spread.
30:07Well, in Wales we call it margarine, but it isn't that.
30:12Dinner.
30:13Goodness me.
30:15It's not meal deal, is it?
30:18Yes, it is.
30:20Is it?
30:21Is it?
30:22It is.
30:23He's a genius.
30:25Well, I know.
30:27Is it meal deal?
30:29Yes.
30:30Yes.
30:30Well done, Nicole Shaw.
30:32Sandy and Stephen, here's your first.
30:34Oh, I've got to get this.
30:35So, DJ, oh, I say.
30:38Not the obvious disc jockey.
30:40Pop's father, Pater, gag, travesty, riptickler.
30:47Yeah.
30:48Got it.
30:49Okay, yeah, we've got it.
30:49Oh, go on.
30:49We've got it.
30:50I think it's dad joke.
30:54Is it dad joke?
30:56Yeah.
30:57Yeah.
30:58Every single joke I make at home is, um...
31:00Every single joke you make here.
31:02Yeah, no, I know.
31:04That's why we love you.
31:05Oh.
31:06My husband, he's got a blockbuster's card, and every time we go out for dinner, wherever we...
31:11He's done it with you, haven't he?
31:12At the same time.
31:12In the ivy, Scott's anything, he puts a blockbuster card down.
31:16And he's done it for, like...
31:18Oh, he's done it, hasn't he?
31:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:19He's done it for, like, 22 years.
31:21Of course.
31:21And there's one blockbuster's left in LA.
31:23I want a blockbuster's card.
31:25It's hysterical.
31:26I want a blockbuster.
31:27I want to do that as well.
31:28Brilliant.
31:29Okay, Carol, John, you get fewer synonyms this time, but it's worth two points.
31:34CR.
31:35Coward, rooster, dash, oversee.
31:38Run.
31:40Chicken run?
31:42Chicken run, yes.
31:46Chicken run.
31:47Oh, yeah, chicken run.
31:48Chicken run, they say.
31:49Is it chicken run?
31:51It is a chicken run.
31:52Well done.
31:54Sally and Stephen, yours for two points.
31:58Trying to catch up here.
32:00Feeble, frail, connect, join.
32:02Ah.
32:03Yeah.
32:04Weak.
32:07Weak.
32:09Link.
32:11Ah, yes.
32:12Weak.
32:13Unless it's, like, weakest link.
32:15Weakest link.
32:17Weak link.
32:18Is that the answer?
32:20Yes!
32:24Carol and John, one synonym per word, the trickiest yet, it is worth a bump of three points.
32:28Here we go.
32:29Lot riding on this.
32:30So, your letters, C, H, and the words, apparel, mount.
32:39Clothes horse.
32:41Yeah.
32:41Yeah?
32:42Yeah.
32:42Clothes horse.
32:43Is it clothes horse?
32:46Yes, it is.
32:49Okay, Sally and Stephen, belly aptitude.
32:56So, it's gut, aptitude, instinct.
33:04Oh, gut instinct.
33:06Gut instinct.
33:07Gut instinct.
33:07Gut instinct.
33:09Gut instinct.
33:11Yes, well done.
33:13Yeah.
33:13Nicely done.
33:14Yeah.
33:14Think in round corners.
33:15So, how did you get on at home?
33:16Are you giving our celebrities a run for their money?
33:18At the end of that round, Sally and Stephen have got 29.
33:22Carol and John have got 34.
33:26He's just got to make up that gap that you can do it in the final round.
33:29Okay.
33:30It's time for our penultimate round.
33:31And in this one, both teams will risk getting their fingers caught in our infamous letterbox.
33:36Fastest team to solve their puzzle correctly will receive two crucial bonus points.
33:41So, all to play for in Fernandrum.
33:45Let's see how Fernandrum works.
33:46You will see three anagrams, each a letter longer than the one before.
33:49This is really straightforward but sometimes very tricky.
33:51You've got to rearrange the tiles.
33:53You must start with the shortest word.
33:54What do you think is the first one there?
33:55Mucky.
33:56Mucky.
33:57And then you move up to the next.
34:00What is that?
34:03What's that?
34:04Permit.
34:05Permit.
34:06Permit.
