A new model of dementia care group home will open in Cherrybrook, NSW for up to 10 residents.
Transcript
00:03The Videri is a household model for people living with dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases.
00:10And it's a real move away from the traditional models of care in Australia.
00:14It's a home for anywhere between 8 to 10 residents living with a diagnosis.
00:20The homes function and smell and look and feel and operate as a real home does.
00:25Residents get involved in everything that we have to offer, so cooking, baking, gardening, shopping, the routine of the home.
00:32And so it's really about not focusing on the deficit of people, but really focusing on what they can do.
00:37And at Videri, we really encourage our residents not to live in their home, not to live in their room.
00:44You don't get a room when you join Videri, you get a home.
00:49And this is where the dining room essentially will be.
00:53So all the meals here are cooked fresh.
00:56On-site, we have a nutritionist who organises that.
01:01And we really encourage residents to eat together to create that community.
01:05And there's morning tea and breakfast and so on.
01:09And the kitchen's also really, I guess, the heart of the home.
01:13So this morning I've prepared what we would have in our homes for morning tea.
01:18So we've got a carrot muffin.
01:20It's fortified with yogurt, olive oil and almond flour.
01:23So it's got the sweetness from the carrots, but lots of lots of good stuff in there as well.
01:29And then we've got a granola biscuit.
01:31So for some of our residents that prefer a finger food for breakfast, this is a really nice option to
01:37be able to dignifiably be able to eat.
01:40But you're getting all of your nutrients.
01:41Yeah, so our homemakers will make all of the meals fresh daily.
01:46So we'll have breakfast in the morning together, which can go anywhere from eggs to porridge to jam on toast,
01:53whatever you prefer.
01:55We have morning tea together.
01:57So that's always some sort of macro balanced muffin that's always really fortified with protein and fibre.
02:03Lunchtime we'll have something like a beautiful quiche with roasted pumpkin and bacon and caramelised onions, something like that.
02:11We'll have another afternoon tea together, most likely in the garden or in another space in the house, which could
02:17be fruits, you know, cheese and crackers,
02:20something that you would ordinarily have at home.
02:22And then dinner we'll have together as well.
02:24That might be a slow cook in winter.
02:26It might be a barbecue in summertime.
02:28So at the dairy, we have a seasonal menu cycle.
02:31So every season we have different recipes, different produce, and we take a lot of our inspiration from our residents
02:40and their families to create the recipes.
02:42And we also will cater to any cultural preferences, dietary preferences, and of course, a texture modified diet.
02:50So this is a really important space because lots of natural light obviously you think you can see really opens
02:56up the springs that sort of outside into the building.
03:00And then out here, we've got a courtyard.
03:03This is a really popular space for residents.
03:06They like to come outside and really just enjoy the garden.
03:09So the way to think about the garden space, in a Videri home, we have two locked doors.
03:14That's the front door and a medication cupboard.
03:16But residents love to have access to the outdoor space and the sunlight, the sunshine, being able to garden, be
03:23part of a barbecue, water the grass.
03:25It's a very therapeutic space without necessarily being an artificial space.
03:29It's a real garden.
03:30And so it's very simple, but it's quite a powerful, magical space where home happens.
03:37So as you walk through the home, you'll see that the environment becomes part of the therapy.
03:42Different spaces to gather and have meaningful gatherings, not sort of a big gathering, which is overstimulating.
03:48The contrast of colors, the different finishings and furnishings, so hard flooring and soft floorings.
03:53So you've got sort of these large spaces here that will be furnished.
03:58And seven rooms, all with en-suites.
04:03And we really encourage the residents to decorate the room how they want.
04:08So there'll be photos on the wall, perhaps of grandkids, their own linen, etc.
04:14And then as we walk in here, this is a vast room.
04:19The vast rooms are fairly similar in each room.
04:21So very spacious, got their own space to put their own things, etc.
04:26In traditional aged care, you have a vacancy and you welcome someone in.
04:30And so for us, it's really about connecting people, not based on their core morbidities,
04:35but connecting them based on the things that are meaningful and purposeful and the things that matter to them.
04:40So they might enjoy gardening or have the same type of music,
04:42or they might have come from the same professions or cultural backgrounds.
04:45really tapping into their narrative and their stories and connecting people based on who they are, not their deficit.
04:52What do you want to see if you don't mind is you using a hometown?
04:57I can't remember.
