00:02Bali is known for its natural beauty and tropical beaches, but there is a stench that is drowning
00:07out its wonder.
00:09It's a very big problem because you have such a nice island and there's dredge everywhere
00:14so you must respect nature, that's a problem I think.
00:20Bali is producing more waste and running out of places to put it.
00:24The situation has worsened after the partial closure of its largest landfill site, which
00:29had been in operation for 40 years.
00:32The tip, which has exceeded its 32 hectare capacity, is said to be permanently closed
00:37by the end of July.
00:39In the wake of its closure, the provincial government has put in place stricter sorting measures
00:44and set up temporary collection sites.
00:48This sorting makes people more disciplined because if the waste is mixed, of course the
00:53officers at the landfill will face difficulties processing it.
00:57Others see this as an opportunity to help farmers who have been struggling with fertiliser shortages
01:01caused by blockades in the Strait of Hormuz.
01:06The culture of cleanliness for this waste sorting in Bali must really be implemented related
01:10to organic, residual and inorganic.
01:12Organic is very helpful related to making fertiliser and compost.
01:16Maybe the government and the community can work together to provide fertiliser for farmers
01:20whose prices are soaring.
01:22But there have been mixed reactions to the household sorting.
01:25There are reports some residents have resorted to burning or throwing their rubbish in the
01:29river after it wasn't collected on time.
01:32For now, authorities are urging locals to take their sorted trash to the waste processing
01:37sites.
01:38In the long term, they're planning to build several waste-to-energy projects set to begin
01:43as early as June.
