THIS is the shocking moment a plane smashed into a building in a built-up city in Brazil.

The aircraft was seen circling the Silveira area of Belo Horizonte, in the south-east of the South American country, before colliding with a low-rise building.

The pilot and co-pilot died, according to Globo.

The pilot was trapped in the wreckage, and three others were seriously injured, the local fire department said.

No one in the building was injured.

The aircraft took off with five people on board from Pampulha Airport at 12.16 pm.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene of the crash at 12:25 p.m.

The pilot had reported to the Pampulha Airport control tower that he was having difficulties taking off.

Lieutenant Raul of the Fire Department said: “It [the aircraft] hit between the third and fourth floors, in the stairwell.

“If it had hit the sides, it could have struck some residences; those apartments were occupied.

“What we saw was the structure of the aircraft projected inside the stairwell, without hitting any other apartments.”

Avani Soares, who lives in the buildinthatch was hit by the aircraft and said she thought “the world had ended”.

She told Globo: “Everything went dark, a lot of debris fell, and I thought, ‘The world has ended.’

“On the other floor, people were screaming for help. I didn’t know what to do.”

Ms Soares added, “Then I ran to the window because it had gone completely dark.

“Then I saw it and said, ‘It can’t be a plane.’ There was a strong smell of fuel.

“I just grabbed my phone and glasses, a nd went downstairs. didn’t grab anything else.”

According to records held with the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC), the aircraft is an EMB-721C model, made in 1979.

The owner is identified as Flavio Loureiro Salgueiro.

Investigators from the Centre for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents have been brought in to examine the incident, according to the Brazilian Air Force
