Hydration break! Legends match is stopped so players can drink BEER and a shot in hilarious scenes

A legendary match was halted by a hydration break with a difference, as Real Madrid and Werder Bremen players were presented with a beer and a shot on the pitch.

Hydration breaks during the World Cup had largely been booed by fans in stadiums due to matches being delayed as players took on water and received tactical advice from their coaches.

The hydration break at Werder Bremen's Weserstadion on Saturday, however, was warmly received.

Play was halted in the 32nd minute of the match, which was aimed at marking the 100th anniversary of Werder Bremen's stadium.

Servers, who wore white shirts and black aprons, emerged and walked down the touchline carrying trays.

A beer and a shot were visible on the trays, which were then presented to the players on the field.

Brazilian striker Ailton, who helped Werder Bremen win the Bundesliga title back in 2004, was seen picking up and drinking the beer during the break in play.

The halting of the match in the 32nd minute was a tribute to former referee Wolf-Dieter Ahlenfelder.

Ahlenfelder famously blew the whistle for half-time in the 32nd minute of a match at the stadium between Werder and Hannover back in 1975.

The referee, who was persuaded to continue the match, later revealed he had a beer and a Malteser shot at lunch before the game. Ahlenfelder, however, denied being drunk during the match.

A beer and Malteser shot reportedly became a popular drink around the stadium following the incident.

The legends match featured former Werder Bremen stars Diego, Naldo, Ailton and Per Mertesacker.

Claude Makelele, Pepe, Christian Karembeu and Esteban Cambiasso were among those to feature for Real Madrid.

Werder Bremen ultimately emerged as 4-3 winners in the match.
