00:00The warning that we had of attack was very short
00:05and the first indication we had that a missile was had in fact been fired at us
00:09was when the missile was seen visibly low against the horizon.
00:17I have never met anybody that's been on the receiving end of an Exocet missile before.
00:25I know this is the first time for the RN that this has happened.
00:30And it's probably true of most Western navies as well.
00:33Therefore, from that point of view, in every sense, this was a very new experience.
00:39It caused a rent in the ship's side, approximately 15 feet long and 4 feet deep.
00:46I think we started thinking that we were on a losing wicket
00:55when we realised the fire was spreading.
00:58The decks were hot on the upper deck.
01:02You could feel the heat of the deck through your feet with shoes on.
01:08The superstructure was steaming.
01:11Paint on the ship's side was coming off.
01:14The area around the initial area where the missile penetrated the hull was glowing red.
01:28It was white hot and red hot.
01:33We feel great sympathy for our families, or rather the families of those of our friends on board
01:40who lost their lives during the attack.
01:43We feel deep sorrow for the loss of our ship
01:49for which we had great affection.
01:52We feel considerable anger that we were struck in the first place.
01:58We feel particularly frustration
02:03that we're not still fighting alongside the task force.
02:08And finally, we are, of course, deeply upset
02:12by the other losses
02:14that have occurred in the Falkland struggle
02:17since our own.
02:29And now, again, we'll get out.
