00:20:37all
00:20:38in your head who was it telling you nobody when i was seven years old i remember my parents took
00:20:44me
00:20:44out to the mall downtown i was standing there holding my mom's hand and i saw another kid there holding
00:20:50his
00:20:50mom's hand only i had never seen anyone like him except maybe on tv so at seven years old i
00:20:57was unfamiliar with
00:21:00but i am asking you is that my fault you're not seven no more brian
00:21:16thanks for the ride our house is up here on the left
00:21:37what was that i don't know probably somebody blew a tire on that pothole again oh i guess

00:22:35i drove out i pulled up and i see someone laying on the floor and i ran over
00:22:39i shook him that's where my hands got bloody so you kill kids and you sell drugs right lechon no
00:22:45you
00:22:45put that in my mouth i didn't say that you said that why would you put that on me marcus
00:22:49marcus
00:22:50tell me what happened so we can all go home come on man i know you just protecting your friends
00:22:55but it's not going to work
00:22:57because your boys right now my two partners got them in a room one of them is already talking
00:23:02i wouldn't be surprising you're just filling out a sheet against you right now that's a lie they
00:23:06wouldn't do that you don't sound too sure about that they don't care about what i got to say that
00:23:12and they mind i did it in your mind i'm a murderer in your mind
00:23:20oh and now we have a warrant which entitles us to search your premises yeah yeah what we should
00:23:26expect to find when we tour that house up there i don't know man now can i talk to my
00:23:30lawyer i'm tired
00:23:31of talking to y'all you know what that is oh yeah no it's like a real good look i
00:23:37don't like cocaine to
00:23:37me whatever it's not my source i have reports saying that you two are in a fight not too long
00:23:42ago
00:23:42it wasn't a fight it was a heated basketball competition what were you fighting about are
00:23:46you even trying to listen to we got past that i can do something for you if you give me
00:23:53something
00:23:59you can go fetch me some weed yo i'm gonna talk to my lawyer though not that
00:24:06get your ass off me sit up i'm gonna block you up and lose the key how'd you like that
00:24:13i got it
00:24:14i got this i got this and they'll find you in a freaking dumpster listen you don't want to
00:24:19close it again i'm on a piece of trash like this it's not gonna be like the last guy who
00:24:24pulled the
00:24:24trigger who pulled the trigger your mama that's who pulled the trigger
00:24:36power 92.3 terence palmer here like everyone i am talking about brian sutter mill the boy from the
00:24:43burbs killed in front of his own house mr coley styles you're being charged with murder in the first
00:24:48degree in the death of mr brian sutter mill do you understand yes sir and how do you plead not
00:24:54guilty
00:24:55your honor the murder happens every day here in chicago when it happens outside of the city that's
00:25:00when it makes national news chicago tribune the chicago sun times red eye all have devoted front page
00:25:06coverage there's a lot of unconscious bias that goes on it happens with all of us it's very natural
00:25:13because your perspective is based on your environment and what you've experienced asa canton
00:25:18yes now you've succeeded in getting life sentences your last three murder trials when you seek life
00:25:22again now jake you know i'm not prepared to discuss that at this time do you believe that you're being
00:25:26a
00:25:26black man in this particular case puts you in an awkward position look i'm not the first black
00:25:32prosecutor to try a black defending and i won't be the last every murdered child deserves front page coverage
00:25:38like i just saw a video recently in the news where people literally saw a kid dying yeah and
00:25:43were like walking away because they were scared so was it a hate crime was he killed because he was
00:25:48white mr styles given that this is the first charge against you you're going to set bail at three
00:25:52million dollars who did a judge think his dad is he diddy jay-z this is not blue ivy that's
00:25:59in jail right
00:25:59now whether you um you call suffering to someone it is a mistake unless you plan to murder them on
00:26:05purpose then it's not a mistake with coley being accused of murder we have to look at it from a
00:26:11from a christian perspective we have to look at it through those christ lens your honor i believe one
00:26:17or even two million would be sufficient even those figures would be near impossible for my client to
00:26:21obtain but three million is nowhere within his reach black man the black man i would be sympathetic
00:26:26except i chose to make something myself while he chose a different path so no i'm not in an awkward
00:26:32position he and i in more ways than one are completely opposite sides and my team and i
00:26:38are going to make sure that this city and the jury see that as clear as day see the lamestream
00:26:43media
00:26:44wants to keep the narrative going of black versus white black versus white because that's how a lot
00:26:48of these guys make money the news media some of the community organizers they got to keep black and
00:26:53white people fighting because it's a good story and when we realize they're sitting at the big table
00:26:57getting rich and we're down here fighting and killing each other over nonsense it's a never-ending
00:27:02struggle for all minorities but for some reason it's forgotten that the fact it's not just black
00:27:08injustice in america mr franklin you're no stranger to cases like this some might even say that you helped
00:27:13write the book on putting murderers like this away now that's not a question is it well but don't you
00:27:18think that it could send the wrong message now that's a question but no i don't now i doubt you
00:27:23would
00:27:23ever exhibit such a breach of etiquette as they asked me to cut bail in half we're not for the
00:27:27simple fact that you're defending your son let this be the only incident sorry your honor forgive me
00:27:33aj canton didn't ask me to join this case i went after the prosecution for the sole purpose of joining
00:27:40that team and it just so happens that the lead prosecutor is my good friend mr aj can let us
00:27:46remember
00:27:46the family of coley styles remember chicago we haven't heard it all yet there'll be no more
00:27:56an 80 000 advance that's a lot of cash jackie i know i feel terrible even having to ask and
00:28:04you'll
00:28:04be acting as his attorney so what you're telling me is you want 80 grand and you'll be pretty much
00:28:15unavailable to work for me for the next several months after i've only hired you a few weeks ago
00:28:19sir with all due respect i can't just leave my son in there jackie i think you're a good guy
00:28:24but i can't
00:28:26afford you that much money however i'll keep you on a leave of absence and in lieu of pay i'll
00:28:35arrange
00:28:35additional support for your team from one of our younger counsel but i can't afford that don't you
00:28:40worry about that it's on me you just worry about closing this case and helping your boy
00:28:45and take whatever time you need your job will be waiting after you win thank you mr show thank you
00:28:53i mean church the world doesn't need more religion what we need is more love and once we love one
00:29:00another in spite of our differences once we love one another in spite of our flaws once we love one
00:29:06another in spite of our differences we leave people to christ all right inmates we got a new one ezekiel
00:29:1522 30 says i look for someone among them that would build up the wall and stand before me on
00:29:24behalf
00:29:25of the land so i would not have to destroy you preachy man come meet your new neighbor but
00:29:30i found no one church we need to stop judging i mean we can't all be saints in the church
00:29:41i know
00:29:41i'm not i know you guys are saints and you guys are innocent but i know i'm not
00:29:49i mean i've been on the block i probably sold some of you when i was coming up on stony
00:29:55island well you
00:29:56know me look we all are and were flat broke and in need of someone to pay our debt
00:30:06and the only one worthy died on calvary i mean greater love has no one than this to lay down
00:30:13one's life
00:30:13for one's friend
00:30:21look at your neighbor grab their hand
00:30:29and let them know i'm with you let them know i'm with you i am with you i am with
00:30:38you
00:30:39because if not you then who
00:30:46tension is rising all across the world and social media is heating up on your news feed you scroll
00:30:51and you see the face accused of the crime and right there that's you know judge and jury blacks have
00:30:56to
00:30:57work twice as hard to accomplish what white people get that's not true in the past few decades i mean
00:31:03thousands of young latino men shot and killed by police officers can you name me one you think
00:31:08what white people just get everything handed to him i can give you two ricardo diaz seferino
00:31:13gardenia 2013 antonio zambrano montes basco watch 2015. both killed by state police officers and those
00:31:23state police officers they went back to work like nothing happened it's easy to see why a police officer
00:31:28would look at coley and think oh he's a murderer because that was his mindset anyway his mindset was
00:31:32already he's up to no good it's almost like we've become desensitized and this is like the the norm
00:31:37this is just america now and as you grow up you realize the stuff we used to do as teenagers
00:31:41and
00:31:41then coming into adulthood we was basically being racist and stereotyping each other you think you
00:31:46have it harder than me no i know i do so can you help me i need you to dig
00:31:52around see what you can find
00:31:53anything i got jackie i'm sure across your mind that's a pretty weak alibi frank you know coley do i
00:32:01do you hey you're a great dad but sometimes you know a kid can slip you know and there's just
00:32:09nothing you can do well i know what i need to do and that's proof he didn't do this
00:32:14now my question to you is will you help me you already know i will
00:32:22but where are we gonna start
00:32:27mr boss
00:32:30mr shaw is everything okay are you familiar with the coley styles brian
00:32:35sedermill case i am and i'm sure you know better than i do that it's it's pretty clearly open and
00:32:40shot i mean don't you think so it doesn't really matter what i think you've just been promoted mr
00:32:46boss you'll be taking second chair for the defense on this trial a trial that i need to handle with
00:32:52care mr styles is a great investment investment that we need to get back to work do you understand
00:33:02good well you should get going you have a lot to get familiar with
00:33:13i wasn't in bed yet because the baby was screaming that's when i heard the bang and i thought i
00:33:17don't
00:33:17know maybe an old car somewhere was having trouble took me a moment to calm her down i didn't realize
00:33:21i was still hearing screams peeked out the window and saw bill and that black kid
00:33:27any idea how long from when you heard the shot to when you look out the window i'm sorry one
00:33:31minute
00:33:31five minutes i was focused on my daughter at the moment how well did you know brian i used to
00:33:36be
00:33:36just the boys a few years ago i don't feel like much of a friend discussing this but brian was
00:33:42a
00:33:42pothead nothing beyond what kids tend to do i mean i was a now and then smoker myself but you
00:33:47become
00:33:48a dad you get delivered from all that and you don't want your kids around people do the things you
00:33:52used
00:33:52to do yourself
00:34:05i need his weeviloth uniform i boxed it
00:34:13which box donations i don't want you in here
00:34:20i'm keeping everything i'm making something for him
00:34:35don't wear that shut the box on the back
00:35:03you see zoe
00:35:07you're in front of coley styles
00:35:11i'm a detective working on his case what wpd nothing like that fine i'm looking for coley's
00:35:17dad family friends yeah well i got nothing hyped then hey you don't mind if i ask you some
00:35:22questions he was at your party that night right him and brian yeah and everyone else in town so
00:35:26you had any contact with him that night yes i did but he didn't say anything about killing brian so
00:35:32how well do you know coley
00:35:35get to the park well i've known coley all his life right and i'd like to prove that he didn't
00:35:39do this and
00:35:40if like you said he didn't mention it to you or act suspiciously all night then you might be somebody
00:35:44who can help they found him standing over brian's body don't that mean he did it actually no it
00:35:49doesn't but the cops don't have any other suspects and they aren't looking
00:35:54i can see that you care that he meant something to you
00:35:58we need your help all right i need to get inside this and you're the only person that can do
00:36:02that
00:36:03what do you need me to do brian's world the people in him i need to get inside his life
00:36:09can you do that
00:36:11yeah i think i can do that
00:36:16mr styles i'm nancy avas jerry sent me over yeah come on in that's frank right
00:36:24yeah have a seat
00:36:26yeah i think i remember seeing you uh in the office there how many cases like this have you won
00:36:34um
00:36:34well i just passed the bar last summer so you know this will be one of my first but i've
00:36:39helped
00:36:39in a lot of civil cases here um i pulled some files on similar cases we can look at that
00:36:47is the
00:36:48state of illinois versus elias braley he was an african-american teenager who was caught on a parking
00:36:53lot camera shooting a white teenager they got a reduced sentence of 10 years after proving he was
00:36:57attacked first look my son doesn't belong in there another 10 minutes let alone 10 years i think it's
00:37:02only fair that i put this out there right from the start okay i've reviewed the facts of coley's case
00:37:07and i am not entirely convinced that your son is innocent now i'm going to do whatever i can to
00:37:13help but i think the best line of pursuit may be to admit that he shot the boy first while
00:37:17showing how
00:37:17the earlier altercation provoked brian into attacking him the toxicology test proved that they'd both been
00:37:23drinking that night it's an option jackie huh we've been racking our brains here i've come up with nothing
00:37:30now it still doesn't explain how coley got a gun coley doesn't own a gun how can you be so
00:37:35sure you
00:37:35know maybe one of the other two boys he was because he's my son i know my son and he
00:37:40wouldn't do this
00:37:42i know it i believe it this is something my kids are upset my wife is afraid and we've never
00:37:48been
00:37:48afraid before it is a little too close to home this story i actually admire the guy for sticking around
00:37:52even if he did it in calling for help because what are the cops going to think the first time
00:37:56they roll up
00:37:57and they see you admire him but what's the first thing they're going to see when they see a black
00:38:00kid hunched over a seemingly dead body covered in blood i'm surprised they didn't shoot well there
00:38:05you go you think aj canton is an uncle tom it's not his fault that he's a black man from
00:38:09the inner
00:38:09city that has to take down another black man from the inner city i mean can you think about what
00:38:13he's probably thinking about you know i gotta tell you i've met aj canton i think he's a fine man
00:38:18i think he's got a thankless job listen personally i think the brother's okay okay he kind of reminds me
00:38:23of
00:38:23something like a black harvey dick you know the famous local hero all right all right bye
00:38:32what's up man you know i'm too young and too pretty to be up here all laid out i mean
00:38:37i'll give it young
00:38:38but that's about it what man you better get out of here uh look what the uh wind blew that'd
00:38:44be nice
00:38:44ron he's nice with the pockets yeah what's up my brothers aj what's up yo why it's so dead up
00:38:57in
00:38:57here huh hey bobby what you got on the game man i think i might want to get a piece
00:39:03of that
00:39:16i'm sorry what i think you heard me just fine yeah whatever man so what we have to that man
00:39:22bobby you
00:39:23know how like to get my hair cut man so you tell me what's really good all right all right
00:39:36let's put
00:39:38it out there so what's up i got a problem with me or something is the money that good aj
00:39:44there it is
00:39:46is the money that good here i am thinking i could at least come to the shop and not have
00:39:51to hear this
00:39:51garbage hey you brought the garbage to the shop brother all right ron seems like you got an opinion
00:40:00about the thing the floor is all yours go ahead lay it all out for us ron why you got
00:40:05to get your nose
00:40:05up and everything no i mean i see you you jump from one high profile situation to the other but
00:40:11you
00:40:11don't actually try to help anyone let alone your own people i mean not unless of course there's a
00:40:16sea of reporters out there shoving cameras in your face so what happened man first of all who you think
00:40:22you're talking to right now you see it seems like you got all these opinions right but i don't recall
00:40:27you doing a thing for the advancement of black folks okay so you're doing something includes taking
00:40:34down a black man oh so check this out when rah rah got shot right after he got pulled over
00:40:40it was cool
00:40:41for me to prosecute that white man no hold on hold on hold on it's cool for me to prosecute
00:40:47the white
00:40:47man right but as soon as a white boy from the burbs loses his life and i take the case
00:40:51now you want
00:40:52to come at me like this you act like you ain't getting paid oh man come on like you want
00:40:56us to
00:40:57think that you're just doing this because it's your civic duty it is my civic duty a young man got
00:41:03murdered
00:41:04see y'all seem to be forgetting exactly where it is i come from what ain't nobody forget where you
00:41:09come from
00:41:10anybody forget where you come from it's you that forgot where you come from what that's the
00:41:15second time you act like you didn't hear me let me ask you a question go ahead shoot where's the
00:41:20bullet oh no where's the book as a matter of fact where's the gun all right you're gonna prosecute
00:41:27a young black man and you ain't even got no physical evidence you see that bobby this brother is
00:41:33now a lawyer don't seem like it's that hard to do not nowadays okay look we all know that you
00:41:39work
00:41:39for yours ain't you all right and you're running for mayor and all that and you want to be the
00:41:43leader but the question is why you got to take this case so tell me ron who you think should
00:41:49take the
00:41:49case huh you see i'm getting real sick and tired of this y'all when they started tearing down the
00:41:57community
00:41:57i stepped up when they ripped the guts out of the taylor homes i was there right beside the people
00:42:04but i can't make a difference if i just stay right beside the people i have to lead and provide
00:42:09justice
00:42:11for all the people let me tell you something brother i can remember when harold washington one of the
00:42:18greatest to ever grace this city would come through these doors almost every sunday after services at
00:42:24blackstone church he'd come through that door and he'd sit down right here right in that seat and
00:42:30i remember it like it was yesterday and he would take time away from actually running this city to help
00:42:38educate and spread positive messages to every man woman and child that came through that door he
00:42:46was definitely one of the best of us and i still feel him beside me today
00:42:57so you still want that lining up for all the cameras gonna be in your face
00:43:07man why you gotta try to get so deep on a sunday you can't take the sermon get out the
00:43:11church
00:43:13it's all good though it's all good it's all good we'll always have a chair for you man even after
00:43:18you lose this case yeah well may the right man win then all right all right
00:43:25you're going through it's not meant to destroy you but rather to develop you
00:43:43why can't i just enjoy you playing hey mister you said i could have anything i want for my birthday
00:43:49this
00:43:49is what i want come on come on back straight arms out i got this
00:44:02even if you feel alone think of me and you'll be home of all the things
00:44:14that we may never know don't worry i'll be there by your side
00:44:25thank you thank you
00:44:31george you pray for me heavenly father we thank you for this moment lord we trust lord that you would
00:44:40continue to continue to bless his life with seasons of uncommon favor that he would know lord
00:44:45that the pressures of life are simply meant to develop promote and to qualify him for all that you
00:44:51have in store for him live in him express yourself through him and may he know you in a sovereign
00:44:57way
00:44:58we thank you for it lord amen you have no prince so he they shouldn't even be holding him
00:45:05right he should be out on one he was screaming for help why would he do that if he was
00:45:09the killer
00:45:09i don't know man i'll probably go miles away then call the police or something like that no one
00:45:14expects a killer to stick around and call for help isn't that the perfect cover he was murdered by
00:45:19someone right we still don't know who didn't they find him with a gun what's this guy's name coca
00:45:24coli no styles and you're bringing a wallet back to that's not a good look like you robbed him and
00:45:27killed him and then came back the white kid was standing over the black body and everybody ran up
00:45:31they'd be like hey man what happened man first thing they would think is we need to call
00:45:37his family it's tragic how tragic it is for coli's family they do not put people in prison for
00:45:45nothing what where have you been for like the past 200 years basically he's toast that's what all the
00:45:52kids are saying at the school anyway well i think they have good as a chance as anyone really believe
00:45:58that yeah we're gonna try it in the city so you know race is not really gonna be a question
00:46:04you might as well do it on the moon i mean it's not about the location location doesn't mean anything
00:46:09it's about public perception you can't take race out of that he's not being persecuted because he's an
00:46:15african-american kid he's being persecuted because he's covered with blood with a dead kid at his feet
00:46:20this is still a world of race issues yes right yes and this trial is going to be sisyphus pushing
00:46:27the boulder up the hill again again and again and it's not going to stop and those people up there
00:46:35with their their newspapers they're going to be force feeding us articles about their local opinion
00:46:40you all remember the central park five of course 1989 a woman is jogging through the park
00:46:44is raped five men all black stand accused i'm sorry i'm sorry quinn what is your point to get
00:46:50perspective to get personal in 2002 on what those men were vindicated when the real rapist was found
00:46:55through dna if the roles were reversed they would have seen brian as innocent you're a muslim oh well
00:47:03i'm jewish we have fears we're both to an extent afraid of the natural prejudices that come with us as
00:47:10being who we are that's what this whole case is about i don't believe that racism is something that
00:47:16we come into the earth as humans naturally participating in i believe it is a condition
00:47:22that is taught why does everything in chicago have to be about race crack at the end of this day
00:47:27it has to be about the facts okay and to accept that it isn't it isn't something i'm prepared to
00:47:32do
00:47:33well then i hope you're right so do you think he's innocent brenda no i think he's guilty and i
00:47:37think
00:47:38he should go to jail for life all right brenda thank you very much for your call what if it's
00:47:41all said and done nicole is not guilty he's innocent no matter what this guy is being crucified and judged
00:47:48in the media and that's another life destroyed it's sad these are two kids but at the same time if
00:47:53he is
00:47:54guilty he does need to be in jail for the rest of his life because brian's mother and brian's dad
00:48:01cannot get another moment with their son so this is all i have now i wouldn't call this much of
00:48:16a plan
00:48:17could be better but you know jackie really believes what coli's telling him i know my son
00:48:24and he wouldn't do this and he what do you think and you still believe that this boy did it
00:48:29there may be a bit of doubt
00:49:00how are you holding up
00:49:02i wish everyone asking me that would stop i'm fine i feel bad it was my party you weren't handing
00:49:11out guns at the door were you look i didn't know brian that well but you seem like a nice
00:49:18guy is there
00:49:19a reason you're talking to me zoe my parents died car crashed six years ago i still don't talk about
00:49:27it
00:49:27with anybody not even my sister
00:49:32it was about the time i moved in with my uncle and it you were with him that night coli
00:49:39yeah you seem like a nice guy
00:49:44yeah he does
00:49:50nobody can say he didn't have a coming he pissed off a lot of people but he was good to
00:49:57me and i loved him
00:49:59he had such an ego you know you're so confident that's why i liked him
00:50:05no
00:50:08i loved him
00:50:13ryan could always hold a grudge
00:50:17and i never thought he'd end up dead
00:50:26hello mr manheim is that right yes i'm nancy abbas i work for coli styles we were just
00:50:32wondering if you'd answer a few questions regarding the murder that took place next door
00:50:36please come in okay so you were outside that morning must have heard the gunshot pretty loud and clear
00:50:44i did i know the sound of a gun ranger retired a gunshot here it's about as foreign a sound
00:50:54as you
00:50:54can get so i mean what did you do when you heard the shot well i ran toward it i
00:50:59figured someone might
00:51:00have gotten hurt it only took me a minute to pinpoint the direction but by the time i got
00:51:05close enough to see this sutter mill house all i could see was that car taken off down the road
00:51:12what car i just saw a pair of red lights speeding off getting smaller and smaller body type was like
00:51:21a
00:51:22tesla or mercedes okay and then you saw brian hello i saw someone
00:51:31a body on the ground and by the time i got back down there was bill holding his son and
00:51:39that black
00:51:40boy right beside him bill sutter mill says he found brian around 4 40. this man heard the gunshot at
00:51:484 30.
00:51:49took a minute or two to locate the source so the car drive away and leave brian alone
00:51:56then bill comes out at 4 40 and sees coley there with brian why would he come back if he
00:52:01was the
00:52:01killer no that doesn't mean anything jackie it's our first break no i'll tell you what this is
00:52:08you think i'm a murderer the guards look at me like i'm nothing the dudes look at me like a
00:52:15pushover
00:52:17are they keeping you safe my roommate is a priest he's cool but once i go to the cafeteria once
00:52:25i go to
00:52:26the gym we may have a witness a man says he saw a car pull away just after the murder
00:52:32it was before you
00:52:33went back that's great you should be a little happier son
00:52:44you think i'm a murderer
00:52:48i was here she would believe me no son
00:52:51i didn't raise a murderer and your mother your mother does believe you she saw everything she has
00:53:00the best seat in the house and your mother knows you didn't kill that boy you understand
00:53:05i just want to go home i didn't kill nobody
00:53:13107.5 wgci you're live with kendra g you know today is trial day
00:53:19coley styles is facing life in prison on trial right now as we speak if coley styles were white
00:53:27would we be having this same discussion absolutely not first of all you'd have no reason to talk to
00:53:31me he wouldn't be in jail all rise the prosecutor is also black aj canton he's also from a similar
00:53:39background as coley i mean why is he taking this case what is his personal motivation well i i think
00:53:45it's a high profile case career aspirations think about it i think it seems pretty obvious or there's
00:53:50an obvious answer at least the honorable judge renita haley presiding you may sit coley is also being
00:53:58judged because of the stereotypes of chicago right now the innocent he's pulling for coley but meanwhile
00:54:04i feel like everywhere else they're kind of everybody thinks he did it brian and coley had a
00:54:12contentious relationship did they not they got into it the first time they met if that's what you
00:54:16mean a fist fight might as well have been well what was it about they just didn't like each other
00:54:23now brian and coley rode home together could it be they patched things up maybe but if you knew brian
00:54:31you knew he had a pretty hot temper he could be a best friend woman and your worst enemy the
00:54:35next
00:54:36how long had you and brian been dating before he died two years wow that's a long time for two
00:54:44teenagers i know but we were in love and that night when you saw your boyfriend for the last time
00:54:52what was his demeanor this conversation is over this conversation is over i loved him but
00:55:01sometimes it was just like you flipped the switch then is it possible that night despite brian's good
00:55:09mood that he may have flipped the switch as you said and antagonized coley styles and in turn coley may
00:55:19have flipped the switch on him i guess so maybe yes you were there the night of that basketball game
00:55:32right what was your impression of coley i just want to see what you keep pressure me i'm gonna show
00:55:38you
00:55:38what i can do i got a bad vibe elizabeth did you feel safe around him
00:55:50no
00:55:54no i didn't
00:55:56thank you the latest developments in our ongoing coverage of black white and red
00:56:02with the trial of coley styles well underway speculation is circulating as to whether or
00:56:08not assistant state's attorney and mayoral candidate aj canton will once again be flagged
00:56:14we have all these anti-gun programs and anti-drug programs but there's no program strong enough
00:56:20to counter bad influences turn that off i want to see you on tv i said turn it off hey
00:56:27j all right
00:56:28don't talk to them like that they care about you and they're interested in what you do i know toy
00:56:33besides seeing you on television like that kind of makes you a little famous
00:56:39i'll do what you got
00:56:47hey guys are you mad at us no buddy daddy is not mad at you i just didn't want you
00:56:55guys to see me like
00:56:56that but you've been on tv before dad i've seen you get interviewed for things lots of times i know
00:57:03and
00:57:03you're right but this time this case what they're saying about your dad and what my plans are this
00:57:14time is different do you guys understand why did you do something wrong are you going to be in trouble
00:57:21no no no no i'm not going to be in any trouble all right why were you so upset was
00:57:26it because of
00:57:26what what happened at the barber shop with uncle ronnie a little bit look what i want you guys to
00:57:33understand is that god made this beautiful world of right and wrong now sometimes it's just that black
00:57:42or white no in between but sometimes the world shakes things up a bit and it gives us this
00:57:51lukewarm gray area and that's what's happening with your dad's case a lot of people out there
00:57:57especially the media are going to try to take advantage of the community and everyone in it
00:58:02and the biggest piece of ammunition is your father and what his plans are see they're going to try to
00:58:08paint me as a bad guy and i just hoped i could still be your hero for just a little
00:58:16bit longer
00:58:17don't worry daddy i won't let anyone put any pain on you
00:58:24call me a little man
00:58:27you two get over here come on daddy loves y'all my babies
00:58:33and you too my big baby
00:58:38i love you
00:58:42you may call your next witness
00:58:46the state calls marcus jones
00:58:57i'll tell you the truth maybe i don't like people like you
00:59:01and i know if i dig around i'm gonna find a family of people just like you
00:59:07mr jones please face me raise your right hand
00:59:11you swear to tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth so help you god i do
00:59:16and look may may you saw the call it didn't pop brian right so we need you to testify
00:59:24under oath
00:59:26come on man you got my sheet i walk in that room those people take one look at me and
00:59:30they're gonna
00:59:31think i think i'm lying you got a brother 23
00:59:37you got a crackhead mama lord have mercy
00:59:43and you got a daughter little tanya
00:59:49you don't got a daddy no more do you
00:59:58forgive me
00:59:58forgive her what they may or may not think we need you or how cool he needs you you gonna
01:00:04help us
01:00:06now you're gonna tell me right now who did it and tell me who pulled the trigger
01:00:14mr jones you were at the party with mr styles and you two were best friends right
01:00:23yes and you were with him the whole night from approximately 6 30 p.m to 4 a.m right
01:00:30by his side
01:00:31the whole time no he was in that girl's room for about an hour i didn't see him again until
01:00:37after
01:00:37that will the court please allow me to present exhibit g a nine millimeter handgun into evidence
01:00:51mr jones is this your gun yes and how did it wind up in court today
01:01:01the police they found it out of my bed was this the gun used to kill brian sutter mill
01:01:10yes
01:01:13so was it you that shot brian no sir i did not okay okay so if you didn't murder then
01:01:21who did
01:01:24coley what objection i don't know why i had it on me when i got in the car i guess
01:01:28he slipped it off
01:01:29your honor this is a clear violation we will have
01:01:40or this witness mr canton here has clearly and deliberately withheld this information and we
01:01:47moved for a mistrial
01:01:48you killed brian yes you pulled the trigger mr jones that is enough
01:02:00you can't help coley i want to but i can't you know what that is
01:02:09why are you doing this
01:02:10but you brought the trigger you killed brian
01:02:31this is outrageous we get no discovery and then the prosecution whips out a gun
01:02:36this jury can't unsee that pistol and they can't unhear that false testimony down mr styles what is
01:02:43this the end of his case your honor and for a lack of a better term he just heard the
01:02:48last
01:02:49nail him into that coffin and understandably they're panicking neither asa canton nor the
01:02:53state's attorney's office provided any information regarding the discovery of this gun canton deliberately
01:02:58withheld this information thereby robbing this defense of the time to prepare a proper cross
01:03:03examination he's just mad his son's little hood friends are going to back up this nonsense story
01:03:07you have no idea what you're talking about your honor if you're not going to give me the mistrial
01:03:12the least you could do is sanction the prosecutor what by tossing out the witness's entire
01:03:15statement you know we can see that he is clearly blind and distracted when it comes to his son and
01:03:21justice for brian sunday that is enough now mr canton is he right did your office withhold this
01:03:27information from the defense and think before you answer me yeah i know we only became aware of mr
01:03:37jones's desire to testify this morning up until then we had no intention of putting one of the
01:03:43defendants best friends on the stand that's nonsensical what prosecutor in their right mind
01:03:48would do something like that and yet you did marcus reached out from cook county and requested to be
01:03:54here he said that he had to tell the truth that what was going on was eating him up inside
01:03:58not to be
01:03:59kidding me i'm sorry this is classic sandbag oh come on you can't just pop up with evidence in the
01:04:06middle
01:04:06of a trial and expect me to cross-examine and then no way would maymay my son's best friend from
01:04:10childhood suddenly want to just flip and make those outrageous statements i've known that boy too long
01:04:17he wouldn't your honor if he would check with the prison i'm sure there's a record of the call
01:04:21and then he can see that when we got it and followed up there would be no time to have
01:04:26this formal
01:04:26sit down discovery session what about the gun that came even later yana i promise you that everything
01:04:35is legit legal and on the up and up here i'm sorry man all right i truly truly am don't
01:04:43apologize to me
01:04:44you apologize to my son you're saying over styles is falling apart his case is paper thin and it's
01:04:54already started to crack and wither away yeah i see it i'm sure he sees it too you don't sound
01:05:01too
01:05:02pleased with that you're not a father yeah sure i mean most likely we got it right and coley killed
01:05:11brian sutter mill but that man is still in there fighting for his son's life well let's not forget who
01:05:16he's fighting against don't start doubting yourself that would be suicide it's not about me doubting myself
01:05:23or not it's about father to father what that man must be going through look i'm about to shatter what
01:05:30little bit of a world he's been able to hold on to and i'm gonna do my job doesn't mean
01:05:37i have to like
01:05:38doing it just make sure you do it
01:05:48three four
01:06:01samuel billings the interpreter of the voice of god i go to church i have my whole life i know
01:06:07god
01:06:07i know right from wrong but you i can't even take you seriously for a minute was my son perfect
01:06:13no
01:06:15but he didn't deserve what he got i've seen you on television heard your interviews on my son's case
01:06:21you're a performer is this a church or is this a concert venue all right mr sutter mill out of
01:06:27respect for your situation i will allow what you said to be forgotten but please don't let this outfit
01:06:31fool you jesus is still my lord and if you keep going on the route that you're going then the
01:06:36lord
01:06:37will have to protect me for my next action are you threatening me we come to this place of worship
01:06:41making accusations and you're asking me about make this about anything other than what it is what
01:06:45what is i walked outside my front door and i saw my son sitting in a pool of his own
01:06:50blood i don't
01:06:51care what color cold he was he murdered my son do you know how long kids have been killing kids
01:06:56outside
01:06:57of these doors that's supposed to help me i'm sorry about those kids i truly yeah but my son is
01:07:02gone
01:07:02and my wife and i have been drowning ever since because he was taken taken by a monster a monster
01:07:08shanice teller willings sir she was my daughter my heart i held her in my arms okay i felt her
01:07:19body
01:07:19turn cold two holes in her chest and she was only seven years old ask me if they saw her
01:07:25case was this
01:07:26turned into a black lives matter campaign no she was a gun down by a cop was it a hate
01:07:32crime no she was
01:07:34riding on her para wheel like she does every single morning i went inside to get her a glass of
01:07:39juice
01:07:40she was safe 30 seconds i came back and she was gone just like that you want me to say
01:07:48i'm sorry
01:07:50how terrible that must have been for you mr sutter mill i don't want anything from you sir that you
01:07:54can't
01:07:55find yourself your son is gone another bright light of his creation just snuffed out before he had
01:08:04the chance to shine and we are all the lesser for it all of us you really have to give
01:08:12yourself
01:08:12permission to change course
01:08:17this is more than just a coat of paint that i'm spraying mr sutter mill
01:08:23we may not be able to see past each other's weakness but we can all find common ground
01:08:41father god i come before you in prayer dear lord to help us understand the things that we just don't
01:08:47understand just give us the eyes to see and the ears to hear and the heart to receive your truth
01:08:53even when the situations are tough we honor you and we thank you for this moment in jesus name amen
01:09:01we're debating all this nonsense you're bringing race into it that i don't think's fair it's getting
01:09:05away from us and you know the body is still in the morgue because it's a part of a crime
01:09:11investigation
01:09:11we have the body of brian sutter mill just deep freezing on ice so they can't release the body
01:09:21to the funeral oh that's so sad sometimes it takes tragedy to really discover what's the best
01:09:29in humanity what's really in deep down inside of us someone died so as we sit here uh you know
01:09:34with
01:09:35all our theories and everything playing amateur colombo i want to dedicate this program to brian
01:09:39sutter mill and covey who right now is sitting in jail accused of a crime i want to dedicate this
01:09:45program to the guy that was killed brian told me he'd be heading out to uic with some friends
01:09:51i figured he'd be going off to college on a basketball scholarship come summer anyway he was ready
01:09:55so i figured sure he took off around six turns out he stayed right in town to go to a
01:10:01party that night
01:10:02and when you opened the front door i thought i saw a ghost because that couldn't be my boy laying
01:10:10there no way i mean things like this don't happen to boys like brian no i mean we live in
01:10:16a good
01:10:17neighborhood this can't happen in winnetka this is exactly why we left indiana and then i see the
01:10:22blood pooling up behind his head there's a hole going right through it right here he should be
01:10:32playing ball this weekend you know he's been talking about his game every night over dinner i
01:10:37i had i'd hugged him just a few hours earlier
01:10:44and did you see anybody else out there
01:10:50yes
01:10:52i didn't get a good look at him at first all i saw was blood i saw his
01:10:57his legs his chest his hands they were all painted red
01:11:01well when i got a good look at his face
01:11:05it was blank can you point him out in the court today
01:11:17mr suddermill you've already lost a son here i risk losing mine
01:11:25sir did you see coley styles pull the trigger no so you heard the gunshot but you didn't come
01:11:32downstairs right away correct we don't hear guns in my neighborhood it was a bit startling so how
01:11:38long after the time that you heard the gunshot before you'd gone outside five minutes so five
01:11:46minutes after you heard the gunshot you went downstairs to see the person that you believe
01:11:53to be the killer yes i saw your son i believe i made that quite clear sir what is the
01:11:59likelihood
01:12:00that someone who just committed a murder would stick around for five whole minutes at the crime
01:12:06scene wouldn't they run away immediately mr styles i'm a professional psychologist people do all kinds
01:12:12of things for unexplained reasons what is it that you want me to do provide an alibi for your son
01:12:20and how do you know he was a drug pusher a friend of mine bought from him got screwed over
01:12:25so
01:12:27it's likely that brian had enemies objection this is all hearsay how about we just stick to the
01:12:34knight in question your honor can i get just a little bit of leeway here i'll allow it for now
01:12:39miss swanson you invited coley to your party personally he seemed like a nice guy and how did
01:12:47he get along with the other guests at the party he blended in just fine people seemed to like him
01:12:54now he'd been drinking did the intoxication affect his temper no he was a fun drunk not a mean drunk
01:13:02now were you ever at all intimate with him that evening objection your honor building to the
01:13:08suspect's state of mind moments before the incident your honor mr canton sorry judge it's fine it's fine
01:13:16judge uh he's just grasping at straws i say let him grasp objection with john we kissed that's it that's
01:13:26it he was respectful yes so you felt safe in his company yes i did
01:13:39you're sure that's the vehicle you saw leaving the scene of the crime that night yes sir that's the car
01:13:45no more questions uh-oh it seems as though we've got ourselves a ghost car here
01:13:53stop me when i've said something that isn't true you don't know who the car belongs to you didn't
01:13:59bother to write a license plate number down and as far as you know this car could have just been
01:14:05passing through the neighborhood no i saw it was stopped then it took off uh-huh let me ask you
01:14:14how thick are those glasses anyway i can stay here i think they won't give you a bite i love
01:14:24you we're
01:14:25gonna get through this now when we get in here you're gonna be under a microscope it's not what they
01:14:30know it's what they can prove right now every remark that is made they're gonna be looking to you for
01:14:36your reaction and that's how they're gonna make their call so 25 is what they hear 75 is what they
01:14:47see
01:14:49so let's make sure they see the right thing all right don't slouch you look good ready
01:14:57i love you i love you too son mr styles have you any more witnesses
01:15:02i'd like to fall to the stand coley styles

01:15:48are you a god loving man
01:15:52yes

01:16:33no more questions john very well as it is already after four we'll recess for the day
01:16:40and start with closing arguments first thing in the morning
01:16:51can you imagine what mr styles was going through with his son locked up exactly
01:16:56by all accounts a promising guy this guy slowed his way up the father in my neighborhood and uh
01:17:01uh this uh this nightmare and then of course um coming up this weekend the suddermill family
01:17:08is going to let you know

01:21:41that's right
01:21:41i said celebrate
01:21:43i mean to the naked eye

01:25:54I stand here today having been challenged as a father.
01:25:58Such a young life was lost in such cold fashion
01:26:01because of the lack of warmth in the hearts of humanity.
01:26:07Some would say we live in a fallen world,
01:26:09but as I stand here and look out, I can't help but see hope for a brighter day.
01:26:20He did that.
01:26:23Although he lies sound asleep, his voice is louder than ever,
01:26:29strongly urging us to fight our hate,
01:26:33to live better than our ancestors could have imagined,
01:26:38to the Sutter Mills, to Brian.
01:26:44Let us lift them up in prayer and extend a hand towards them.
01:26:50To a young man who was loved so much, we say goodnight.
01:26:58We will see you in the morning.
01:27:01To the world, I stand here and I say good morning.
01:27:06We are just getting started.
01:27:27Listen to your own heartbeat.
01:27:29Listen to the times where you needed someone to show you grace and no one was there.
01:27:37And when you hear that heartbeat,
01:27:40you'll see that the heartbeats don't tell us whether or not we're innocent or guilty.
01:27:44It just says that we're humans.
01:27:48And so I have a special message.
01:27:50I'll say a little bit.
