00:01Out of a community's grief comes action.
00:05It's been six months since Mercury Sulacus was fatally attacked by a shark.
00:10If there was a drone in the sky that day, Mercury would still be with us.
00:13The state government is taking the lesson,
00:16handing out drones to 60 board riding clubs between Newcastle and Wollongong.
00:21Embrace new technology and new ways of monitoring for sharks
00:25and keeping people safe on our beaches.
00:29125 volunteer pilots are being trained up too.
00:32They'll fly the drones year-round during board rider events and training.
00:37I'll just consistently pop the horn and then everyone in the water knows to come out of the water.
00:41The program costs $650,000, but surfers feel it's worth the peace of mind.
00:47I kind of go on the basic odds of sharks and so I never feel too unsafe,
00:53but certainly with kids and things like that I welcome any additional safety measures.
00:57The view of the drones now, they can see so clearly into the ocean.
01:01So I think it's a good step for the safety of other surfers.
01:05These drones will fly at Sydney's northern beaches before the program expands to the city's south.
01:10When they take to the sky, it'll be with a message commemorating the surfer whose legacy they carry on.
01:15These drones represent progress. They represent the lives that may be saved.
01:20But there could be more progress due to artificial intelligence.
01:24They've kind of nailed the AI detection side of it.
01:27Now what we've got to get is we've got to take what we call the processing side of it.
01:31Another bet on technology to make the waters safer.
