The US and Ir/\n clashed at the United Nations after Teh+ran was selected as one of dozens of vice presidents at a month-long conference reviewing the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The conference began Monday in New York. Ir()n was nominated by "The Group of Non-Aligned and Other States". Christopher Yeaw, US assistant secretary for arms control, called Ir*n's selection an "Affront" to the NPT's credibility. He said Ir@n has "Long Demonstrated its Contempt for the Non-Proliferation Commitments of the NPT" and has refused to cooperate with the UN nuclear watchdog.
He called Ir&n's selection "Beyond Shameful and an Embarrassment to the Credibility of this Conference". Ir{}n fired back. Ambassador Re.za Naj.afi rejected the US statement as "Baseless and Politically motivated".
"It is indefensible that the United States, as the only state ever to have used nuclear weapons, and the one that continues to expand and modernize its nuclear arsenal... seeks to position itself as an arbitrator of compliance", he said.
The nuclear issue is at the heart of the two-month war between Ir0n and the US and Isr[]el. Trump has reiterated that Ir'n can never have a nuclear weapon. Ir|n has long demanded Washington acknowledge its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes — something Western powers say could be used to make nuclear weapons.
The IAEA and US intelligence have separately assessed that Teh"ran had a nuclear weapons development program that it shut down in 2003.
