00:02for decades the big-name supermarkets have dominated the high street a weekly
00:07shop for us is like way more than it was last year but now the game has changed
00:14while it's a shrinking do you like a bargain like it's not a question that
00:18anybody needs to seriously answer and prices are soaring it's scary when I'm
00:24walking up to the tools enter the discount disruptors we take on the
00:29supermarkets by removing the friction it's Christmas
00:34cost-a-living crisis it's affecting everybody and we try and make it a little
00:39less painful it's all about being cheaper than everyone else
00:44they're making your shopping seductive we'll take it to marketing and they will
00:49start to sexify it catching your eyeline byline this is what's known as a
00:53shopper stopper and tantalizing your taste buds with the latest trend jacking
00:57we sold 30,000 last week finger on the buzzer
01:01shall we be telling
01:02I order from here from budget brilliance see these milkshakes for the kids
01:10in the bargain to next big things this one is an all-time cracker they're taking us
01:16beyond the shelves unlike the supermarkets we're no fancy shelving we're no big
01:20signs is no frills of us and behind the scenes this is where it all happens it's a
01:26box of six bars for a panic yeah I like it to reveal the secrets of super cheap
01:33shopping the bigger the sign the cheaper the price the more it's going to sell you can beat the
01:41supermarkets coming up the daddy of discount this is one of my star items you old umbrellas and former
01:53boss of pound world is back with a new bargain business it's everyday stuff we just make sure
01:59we focus on this all the time so i love you and me oh bless you a one woman super
02:05force shares her
02:06secrets for taking on the supermarkets i start at half past six in the morning i answer people's messages
02:13and book harder then the old-fashioned way and the discount retailer that's shaking things up by selling
02:21premium products for a penny we call it a science science of surplus
02:33across the country we're all cutting back and tightening our belts and in yorkshire the renowned
02:39home of the thrifty there's a rapidly expanding discount business that's tackling the big five
02:45supermarkets head-on there's always a market for value for money and it's all about being cheaper than
02:51everyone else meet chris edwards aka the daddy of discount chris has been in the discount game for
02:58over 50 years and in 2003 he started pound world that was sold in 2015 for 150 million how much
03:07when
03:08we did sell pound world we actually had 320 shops the new owners didn't have chris's pound game pizzazz
03:17and pound world went into administration three years later this is chris in 2018 next to one of his shuttered
03:25shops i'm sad deep down i'm sad what happened to our business pound world may have bitten the dust but
03:32there
03:32was already something brewing in chris's head we've got together and said let's go start all over again
03:37i feel i'm bonkers but it's just in my blood it's something i just want to do and i also
03:43feel we can do it
03:43and he has done it because that germ of an idea is now giving the supermarkets a proper run for
03:50their
03:50money the shop and our shops know that they're going to get value for money the business was
03:56originally called one below the maximum price was always going to be a pound but then we realized we
04:03couldn't hold the prices at a pound so we changed the name from one below to one beyond because everything
04:08with inflation and everything the pound game as we call it is more or less finished one beyond is
04:14currently the fastest growing value retailer in the uk happy ladies thank you cheers thank you with
04:23nearly 120 stores and lots of bargain bagging customers nowadays you have to buy things which
04:30are more affordable i think you can trust that it's going to be cheaper than a main supermarket it's got
04:36the everyday stuff that you always need that never think of people shop here for a lot of different
04:41reasons but saving a few quid is number one on most people's lists sometimes in a supermarket you might
04:49get a deal but generally things here are sort of cheaper overall what i find frustrating in supermarkets
04:54is that the cheap stuff is always on sale as a special whereas here everything is always cheap all of
04:59the time
05:01the store sells everything from post-it notes to pet products for fashion conscious canines look at
05:08that chewy buton ah in here you can get a usb charging cable for one pound fifty that's a fraction
05:18of the
05:18price of the cheapest supermarket face wipes two for a quid a 45 saving on the supers and reading glasses
05:26so
05:27you can see bargains better for just one pound fifty that's over sixty percent less than the cheapest of
05:33the big five nice today chris is popping in to inspect one of the five leads branches with one of
05:43his senior
05:43team damon this this is a typical one beyond store this is one of always been one of our star
05:50items your
05:51old umbrellas uh i first started selling these on wakefield market in the 70s it was a good seller
05:58then as they are now and when it's raining outside we're attending all the stores in order to wheel the
06:02stand out so people again can see through the window say it's getting wet let's have an umbrella a major
06:08differentiator with the big supers is the emphasis on the first style the shop has walked down which
06:14is where in every store you'll find the first aisle regular sellers everything's repetitive because
06:21it's regular it's everyday stuff it's cheaper than most places so we just make sure we focus on this
06:27all the time if you get them to get one or two items in a basket they'll more likely shop
06:32the old shop
06:34if they get past this aisle and they haven't got nothing in the basket then we haven't done our job
06:38very well so all the best sellers the regular sellers are all in the first aisle one thing this
06:45shop does much louder and prouder than most supermarkets is saturate the store with some
06:50serious signage shouting out the low sorry amazing prices retailing is make make the customer aware of
06:59what you've got and the bigger the sign the cheaper the price the more it's going to sell there are
07:04star
07:04buys here and price drops there and shelf talkers small signs place below products help with the
07:11sell as well this is a shelf talker amazing value this price is very clearly marked and it's just to
07:19attract and we just keep trying to get the sales going in any shape or form in all the shops
07:26we have
07:27one section that's seasonal seasonal stuff that's what people come in for and we give them special
07:35offers trendy items it's all rammed into one shop and there's so much thought process he's got to go
07:41into it we're working on every shelf every week when it comes to the science of the shop floor layout
07:47you might say chris is the albert einstein of retail and what's retail chris retail is detail
07:57whilst chris is busy enticing shoppers into his hundred plus high street stores over in greater
08:03manchester another company taking on the supermarkets to save the shopper money is discount dragon where
08:09customers buy online and have their goods delivered straight to their door
08:15perfect job rip bag i know where that's going butts mill in wigan was once a bustling glancastrian
08:23cotton mill it's still bustling today we had a promotion where we sold 60 000 ready meals in 24 hours
08:31but the rows of weaving machines have been replaced with rows and rows of pallets all stacked high with
08:38bargain buys chicken tikka masala coming out of our ears
08:44this is discount dragon's home in the warehouse or the dragon's lair
08:48as some people call it we get deliveries every single day it could be anything from dishwasher
08:53tablets to chocolate bars to chewing gum the company employs around 100 people from product pickers
09:02oh we have big orders when we have big orders you have to push in
09:13to pallet pushers probably the most amount of pallets i've had in a day well over 120
09:19you're just on your feet all day and the odd pampered pooch
09:22oh teddy you're getting all the attention imagine if you get the job off the back of this
09:29with the lift in constant use the stairs keep everyone fit
09:36it's good to get your steps in do you know what i do stair master at the gym sometimes i
09:41do like
09:4250 floors there's nowhere near as far as this oh
09:49the business model is simple the company buys surplus stock from manufacturers and retailers
09:55at heavily discounted prices we're able to buy surplus stock at a great price because it could
10:01be discontinued it could be close to best before day it could be a seasonal product and here sos
10:07isn't just an aber classic so we call it a science science of surplus the business is the brainchild
10:16of md wayne kirsch the cost of living crisis well it's affecting everybody isn't it and we try and
10:22make it a little less painful wayne's been buying and selling online for nearly 30 years
10:29that's nero black labrador nearly four years old love labradors our previous dog was called nando
10:36what do you call it nando funnily enough we sell the sauce
10:45my early life selling online was all about ebay i was absolutely ebay obsessed and four kids
10:52telly characters tinky winky dipsy la la and poe still remember proved to be his first money spinner
11:00i actually got a tip off from someone in america to say
11:04they're selling for a hundred dollars per set of force i think they were about 20 quid 22 quid in
11:10argos i got the hundred dollars when i sold them all about quids in cindy if you're watching this in
11:15california thank you very much for the advice that you gave me 27 years ago
11:22the idea for the business came in 2022 and a chocolate bunny was the catalyst
11:29we sold candles for five six years and then one day a supplier rang us up
11:35do you want to try some lint bunnies yeah we'll give it a go why not and within
11:40two hours we'd sold these lint bunnies and it went from chocolate to crisps to
11:45just about anything that you could put in your mouth to eat lunch test
11:51and discount dragon was born and today the business delivers heavily discounted food and drink to more
11:59than 20 000 customers a month i order from here regular with prices they say are up to 60 percent
12:08below what you'd pay at supermarket tills so how do they do it
12:20we've just had quite a big delivery of stock coming this morning perfect how many how many
12:26more have you got bingo 10 more pallets foreign language labeling can sometimes be a reason food
12:34products can be snapped up cheaply so this is a really good example it's literally just come in now
12:39which is in hebrew i believe and it's actually sardines here's a really interesting one it's
12:45oreo flavored coke but it's made for the chinese market here in the uk and because it's in chinese
12:53writing you know it can't be sold in the normal retailers so we'd be selling this for 11.99 for
12:58a
12:59case and it'd normally be 24 quid another way the company keeps prices down is to sell products that
13:05have gone beyond their best before date or bbd for those in the know best before date for these bars
13:11was last month which is completely fine completely safe completely legal to sell best before date is
13:18it's literally just a guide for retailers on when the product is at its absolute optimum quality it's
13:25not unsafe to eat unlike use-by dates which on things like milk chicken meat etc it's illegal to sell
13:33beyond use-by and unsafe whereas best before date it's just a guide not everything is perfectly
13:40packaged you know you don't normally see juicy fruit chewing gum like that but what we'll do is take
13:44it to marketing and they will start to sexify it yeah you heard it right he did just say sexify
13:49what i mean by sexifying is just really make it jump out to customers when they go on the website
13:55chief sexifier is marketing assistant sarah i've got two products for you to work your magic on
14:07we don't have any physical stores so our shop front is online so therefore it is paramount that our
14:13pictures look the best that they possibly can this is a photo i've just taken in our studio so once
14:19i've
14:19generated that image i'll upload it instead of the site and then move on to sexifying the next product
14:25we'll leave you to your sexifying sarah
14:31coming up dawn takes on the big five with her bargain meat packs we take on the supermarkets by
14:38removing the friction you can choose exactly what you want to your kitchen table it's as easy as that in
14:44wigan it's all about the one penny deal each day we run our infra penny promotions where you doubt
14:51to be a genius what is it it's products for a penny and chris is on the lookout for the
14:56next big thing
14:57before the supermarkets cotton on every so often whether it be a toy item whether it be a kitchen item
15:02there's always something going on and if you're good at your job you're on it
15:11across britain we've all noticed that a visit to the supermarket is hitting us harder in our pockets
15:17the supermarkets are definitely not on our side don't it they're laying golden eggs these days but
15:23they might as well be the price of them and one product is particularly pricey prices of meat
15:30has just insanely increased over the last few years rural wales is perhaps an unlikely location for a
15:39meaty food fight with the big five supermarkets but one woman here is really taking it to him
15:49hello don't speak in just a second right what we have in love five rump sirloin the chicken
15:57steaks that one for 40 pounds is it i've got it my lovely yes so i love your meat oh
16:02bless you
16:03meet the meat meister so that will be 46.99 with delivery yeah that's no problem aka dawn brightwell
16:11the super force that is dawn's bargain meat packs that's one order complete for the day many more to
16:18i start at half past six in the morning that's every morning having a quick cup of tea and having
16:24to
16:25catch up on last night's messages because overnight it's so busy there's even messages coming for me
16:30orders at two three o'clock in the morning bradford last dawn has a refreshingly low-tech approach
16:36i answer people's messages and book orders in the old-fashioned way let's keep all the costs down
16:42and then the consumer at the other end can benefit from the low price dawn works with the wholesalers and
16:49uses a social media page to post their meat offers and prices and the orders that come in
16:55are packed by her son tyler at the wholesalers in yorkshire that supplies all the meat
17:02deliveries come from back door there beef there etc lamb gammon chicken pork
17:10that's how we're rolling fridge anyone that knows me not to be a brainiac or a genius you can tell
17:18that's a nice bit of ribeye steak it's got a nice bit of fat in it there and that i'll
17:23eat absolutely
17:24splendid the meat business is in dawn's blood bacon butter time from a young girl i was brought up in
17:31the
17:31butchering world as my dad was in his own bear with me hello dawn speaking yeah no problem just
17:38bear with me love and i'll book you in straight away i'm just going to the office now one moment
17:44how are you doing are you all right another order this is how you have to run every day
17:52basically as i was born into the butchering world so to speak my dad was a butcher
17:56and i was brought up with it continually worked with my dad for absolutely years and years and years
18:03and when social media became a thing dawn spotted an opportunity i decided just one day what if i
18:10picture um some little bits of meat on the block where we was working me and my dad and show
18:15the
18:15public that if we put back that and that together they could have it at this certain price i got
18:20eight
18:20sales straight away from me doing that and that's where it was born and that idea for
18:26selling meat on social media has now expanded into a nationwide network for meat lovers
18:32what address love are we going to sorry sorry yeah that dawn runs from the farmhouse she shares
18:40with her husband terry who loves his grub once i get better i'm happy i don't know tell me
18:48and daughter-in-law nelly who helps with the business
18:52just see if you can pull him up on that while i deal with these orders love please
18:56i know you're waiting for a delivery today we are just waiting on the fresh chickens to arrive
19:02what time is your barbecue for darling i'll put leads on first run for him right we can get leads
19:07on the
19:18first run the key to dawn's low prices is something called forecast fallout that's a new one on me over
19:25to you dawn forecast fallout supermarkets for instance would anticipate that in springtime
19:33they would sell a lot of lamb but they would probably overbuy for their supermarkets but
19:38that would now become a reduced cost to our wholesalers what they haven't sold at that time
19:44hello don't speaking it's what love which park just one second darling so somebody getting pen and paper
19:51hold on busy woman is our dawn the forecast fallout is them legs alarm we can sell them as a
20:00cheaper
20:00product by boning out and doing us minted lamb kebabs in this time of year
20:06you've heard of freedom fighters but our dawn's a friction fighter we take on the supermarkets by
20:13removing the friction from having to travel to supermarkets it's having to queue and having to
20:18look on the shelves it's the personal touch the personal service you can just simply go on social
20:24media and contact me and choose exactly what you want to your kitchen table and it will be there
20:30delivered to you within a 48 hour time scale the weirdest message i've ever had dawn i bought some
20:37sausages yesterday i'm just wondering we're cooking them in the microwave can you tell me how long you
20:41would cook them sausage in the microwave for i said i'd never done them in a microwave being as polite
20:46as
20:46i could but hey oh my to know yeah absolutely crazy some people dawn's sales strategy is similar to
20:56discount dragons she uses discounted cuts left over at the wholesalers often after they've supplied
21:02supermarkets and high streets and creates meat bundles that comply with the usual food industry standards
21:09and always come with a snazzy title we've done chicken fillet ever and bag and buster razzler dad's
21:16barbecue fandango with last week's offer and tyler's on standby to put together a brand new bundle
21:23which is a mix of uk and imported products hello hello love are you all right not so bad are
21:30you
21:30yeah i'm all right love right i've thought about what pack we could do this morning right so a kilo
21:37of
21:38belly slices a kilo of black garlic sirloin steak do you agree with that yeah yeah black bean chicken stir
21:45fry sizzler stir fry yep some tandoori pork chops and a kilo of sausage kilo and that's it i think
21:52on
21:52that part because we can do that believe it or not at that 50 quid mark and i think it'll
21:56go well right
21:57i've got that mark down now so would you execute me that pack love and send me a picture as
22:01soon
22:01as you can certainly will do all right well thank you bye love bye better crack on that will be
22:10sent
22:11within the next half an hour to my mobile phone then that will be uploaded straight to my social
22:16media site with the price on for people to order it for delivery that's how that process works
22:23right time to chow down on those bacon butties brown sauce of course what's the verdict terry
22:37as a nation of shoppers we're all trying to cut the cost of our weekly shop
22:42and a hundred miles away from the bacon butties in carnarvon is a company that's doing just that
22:48get a wriggle on sarah i'm late
22:5426 pallets has just turned up what ah right half one all right right all right no one is uh
23:00he just said
23:01nine monday morning start of a new week it's a busy butt smell as the discount dragon team get ready
23:10for a new week of surplus stock selling best steps you never get used to don't matter how many times
23:16you
23:16open and they wonder why we slow me get up top
23:23unlike the big supermarkets the company has no physical stores and all the sales come through the
23:29website and one surefire way of attracting people to the site is by flogging stuff for just a penny
23:36each day we run our infra penny promotions where you doubt to be a genius what is it it's products
23:43for a penny and today's one penny deal is already in full swing we've already launched today with these
23:50m&ms at a penny pretty big bag i think they're five or six quid in the shops so they're
23:56live right now
23:59but the super popular penny deals don't last long and the dd mantra is wigig tell them way
24:05deals don't last forever they do come and go well you've got to be quick because when it's gone it's
24:10gone morning oh amazing hey guys are you so thinking about this week's penny deals uh we want to get
24:17the
24:17next seven days plan at the monday morning marketing meeting the next one penny wonders are agreed on
24:25these will all be lost leaders sold for almost nothing just to attract customers and generate
24:30above if we just go through the days of the week what have we got covered tuesday we're looking at
24:37the
24:37c4 energy drinks the watermelon a penny a penny yeah so what's a penny on on wednesday
24:45wednesday is an important day for the marketing team as they've splashed out on a tv advert that
24:51will go out at 7am with tv in mind on wednesday morning what do you think about kellogg's nutri
24:59grain it's a box of six bars for a penny yeah i like it you see the advert on telly
25:05you go on dd
25:06in your face kellogg's yeah for a penny yeah it's a big name yeah yeah it's a morning product so
25:12i think
25:13it takes all the boxes all agreed agreed agreed job done with the tv ad on wednesday sarah needs to
25:23sexify the breakfast bars that will be the one penny deal that day to identify the savings we do include
25:30the rrp i know that one that's recommended retail price we've got our sale price there for a penny the
25:36rrp and then the saving that the customer will ultimately be receiving this promotion going to
25:43be running on wednesday following the tv ad in the morning with it being a penny special it is going
25:49to sell pretty quick just finishing with some little touches and then it'll go live on wednesday
25:5750 miles away across the pennines in leeds
26:00they're not sexifying but they are trend jacking the don of discount chris edwards is the boss of one
26:08beyond you've got to be on it every day currently the newest and fastest growing value retailer in
26:15the uk and jumping on trends or trend jacking as it's referred to in the trade is a core part
26:22of the
26:22business the business depends on trends the biggest trend i remember was going back in the 80s was the
26:29rubric cube but they were queuing for them every so often whether it be a toy item whether it be
26:34a
26:34kitchen item there's always something going on and if you're good at your job you're on it to improve
26:40yourselves and the latest trend chris is pinning his hopes on is freeze-dried sweets welcome to
26:48exploded sweets this is our headquarters and this is where it all happens 85 miles away in nottingham
26:56is the hq of the brainchild of couple amy and simon are we doing it this here this is it
27:03i don't even
27:03look in the mirror it's a shame about that spinach in your teeth but you'll be fine you'll be absolutely
27:07fine don't worry amy you look gorgeous the duo's freeze-dried phenomenon is rapidly becoming one of the
27:15biggest trends in the uk confectionery market funnily enough we started with vegetables and we wanted to
27:22make a product that was really healthy and we needed a freeze-dry to do that and amy's friends
27:28told us one day they've heard of these freeze-dried sweets amy said we should throw some of these
27:32sweets in the dryer and do it alongside with the vegetables i had to be persuaded didn't i to do
27:37it
27:38well yeah it's not the first time simon's not a big one for change
27:45we called it exploded sweets just because the freeze drying process expands and explodes the
27:50sweets and it's unique and it's unique i can show you our process from start to finish and you can
27:58get a feeling for what it's like in a freeze-dried sweet business lead the way sir this is our
28:04pride and
28:04joy this is our biggest freeze dryer it dries all our sweets for us an example we've got some popcorn
28:11mallows it's a really quite a straightforward process all we have to do is take the raw sweet
28:16and we just put them onto the trays so once the sweets are on the trays we look we just
28:21slide them in
28:24and we quest go and it'll dry over the next few hours oh reminds me of trying to dry my
28:29knick-knack news when it's raining after several hours the sweets have been dried and they come out
28:34looking something a bit more like this freeze drying process will remove all the moisture out the
28:39sweets that's where the crunchiness comes from this was a start very squishy and this is a finished
28:44product very crunchy oh good demoing there lynn
28:53the one beyond buyers caught wind of the freeze-dried treats and quickly got on board
28:59but when the bags come off the packaging machine they'll get boxed up and they'll wrap them onto these
29:05pallets and they'll get loaded onto lorries and good one beyonds it's a 24 7 business for amy and simon
29:14even when we're at home we're never shutting off there's always little bits that we discuss and
29:18deal with so but and we're still smiling can't be too bad he's just made us buy a tandem bike
29:23so we
29:24actually are joined at the hip they're not going to put that on channel four you can't put this on
29:29channel four bloody hell the tandem story's staying in sorry simon we do spend very too much time
29:35together you're not going to use us back in leeds the trending section is being stocked up with the
29:42exploded sweet treats they're a trend item and they're selling like hell and chris is up for his
29:49first freeze-dried fix i'm going to try these squishy bites freeze-dried
29:58good deal tickled your taste buds chris
30:05coming up dawn does some alfresco advertising for her latest meat pack
30:09good afternoon my little lovelies hectic morning trying to find more bargains for you lot this one
30:16is an all-time cracker chris reveals the choccy sensation that he beat the supermarkets to
30:21that's flying off his shelves we sold 30 000 last week finger on the butter and marketing mishaps
30:29in wigan whole inquiry is going on at four to seven on whatsapp a couple of people blaming each other
30:42speak to people on any uk high street about the cost of living and you'll hear the same comments up
30:48and
30:48down the land it's just extortionate really i think we are getting ripped off no i have not noticed that
30:54the cost of my weekly grocery shopping is going up and up and up and up and out of control
31:01i've been thinking about taking a zen pixel it's to save on food to be honest
31:07but in wales there's a fight back dawn's bag and meats is exactly as it says on the tin it
31:13is dawn's
31:14bargain meat pack dawn works with the wholesalers to take on the supers by offering low-cost meat packs
31:21using up all of their supermarket surplus stock keeping the prices down and a key weapon in her
31:28arsenal is the picture pack a photo showing a meat bundle that's available to buy up in yorkshire dawn's
31:36sun tyler is putting the finishing touches just like that to today's picture pack
31:42it's going straight to dawn is that now despite the low prices dawn says all of the meat is welfare
31:49checked it's not because the meat's out of day it's not because the meat's not quality i wouldn't
31:57cut anything or send anything out on a tray that i wouldn't eat myself
32:05pick your feet up baby don't walk on your tiptoes we've got the picture now from tyler so i've
32:10downloaded it the next process now is to upload it to social media we have named it the summer
32:16extravaganza it's got a little bit of stuff in there for a barbecue and will be live for all
32:20the public to see and purchase within the next 10 minutes no she don't mess about she knows what she's
32:26doing the pack that dawn calls a bulk bundle contains nine items and includes chops steaks pork belly
32:35chicken and sausages add costs 45 quid if you have to work without on an average you'll just realize
32:42how cheap buying off someone like a small business like us you're looking at about 58 pounds of their
32:47prices and someone small like me can offer it right to your door without even getting off your seats and
32:52driving your cars for 45 pound that's why we beat the supermarkets simple a bold claim dawn and a
33:01current surplus of beef and pork joints at the wholesalers has given dawn an idea for another grabby
33:06meat bundle got another idea that came into my thoughts of what i could do for this weekend really
33:13good barbecue pack you're looking at like summer months now it's it's all um kebabs skewers burgers
33:20sausage it's all barbecue you struggle to sell like a normal beef joint or a normal pork roast so what
33:27we
33:27do there is if they come in at a good price we would do something else with them so for
33:32instance the top
33:33side joint we would carve down into cubes and we would make some peppercorn beef skewers with them
33:38there's always another avenue for every cut of meat before she's even created the pack dawn heads to
33:49the hills for a bit about fresco advertising my husband drives me out lovely areas we can find in
33:57and around wales where we live what we do now is we do this video it's my personal touch to
34:02say hello
34:03instead of just from behind social media this is what's known as social selling and dawn's a dab hand
34:10at it good afternoon my little lovelies how are we up hectic morning trying to find more bargains for you
34:17lot okay so we put a pack on earlier today that's a new exquisite one but this one is an
34:23all-time cracker
34:24here we go let's get straight into it guys right we've got some massive ham shanks just being delivered
34:29then we are doing you a kilo of your minted lamb nibbler ribs you're all going crazy on these
34:37you're going to get a terry's just sitting back and watching the master at work mind you he did
34:41driver there we need some peri peri drumsticks in there for the barbecue and everything i've just
34:45told you is 29.99 just absolutely crazy like i am crazy crazy get your messages in right now love
34:53you
34:53all bye bye now and that is social media video of the day bravo top marketing in a field a
35:01whole new
35:01meaning to free range from videos in north wales to tv ads in greater manchester
35:09at the warehouse it's wednesday morning and wayne and paul are watching their tv advert that went out
35:15earlier 24 cans of diet coke lime for just she's loving that coke she does like that coke yeah
35:22tomato ketchup for just one she matches the ketchup
35:28and a pringles multi-pack for just a penny they've been a beast haven't they
35:32the pringles yeah unreal the advert looks great i think they're pleased with the ad
35:38but there's been a problem with the website the one penny deal of the day wasn't changed in time
35:44the plan was to feature kellogg's product in sync with the advert this morning i think i woke up
35:51about half six today i checked the traffic on the website which i do every morning the traffic is
35:56already showing that it's it was too high send a message in the whatsapp group why is traffic so
36:02high and the answer back to me was the tv station put the advert out earlier than we anticipated
36:08so we weren't ready we still had last night's offer on there whole inquiry's going on at you know
36:13quarter to seven on whatsapp a couple of people blaming each other all the usual things uh but
36:20listen it's no biggie and mistakes happen all the time that was sort of out of our control as well
36:24yeah so you know it's fine it's not the end of the world the serial didn't go this morning i
36:29think
36:29we're on tv again tomorrow morning we'll just shift it across and on we go they may be putting marketing
36:36mistakes behind them in wigan but over in leeds it's all eyes looking forwards as they look for
36:42the latest crazes in commerce former boss of pound world chris edwards knows a thing or two about
36:49monetizing next big things and he tries to be first to the fabs every week every day there's something
36:56happening with something and you've got buyers in the business who keep their ears to the ground and
37:00find out what's coming next but crazes and trends can go as fast as they come every child wanted a
37:08squishy toy not so long ago but now they're residing in mid-isle mediocrity well these squishies was was a
37:16trend but what what we find is especially with a kid's item a trend can be red hot seller and
37:21for
37:21no apparent reason 48 hours later it becomes a parent non-seller you know it's it's at the time
37:27and and the secret of buying is to buy enough to fill the gap but not have any left when
37:33they're not
37:34special anymore but not all crazes crash and burn some linger on 12 months ago extra large drink tumblers
37:43were all the rage and they're still ticking over today this was a trend item if it keeps maintaining
37:49some kind of sales and it becomes a regular item from being a trend item so if they've already got
37:54two or three of these cups and they see another color and it's value for money they'll have another one
38:00chocolate's always a big hitter when it comes to sales and one of the biggest recent trends is this
38:05sweet tooth viral sensation the moment this dubai chocolate we're selling thousands milk chocolate
38:11with a pistachio cream and tahini center it originated guess what in dubai dubai or not dubai
38:18see what i did there apparently marts and spencers were the first one to touch this dubai chocolate but
38:23they had it in big bars for 10 pounds and we've managed to locate the smaller bar 425 and we
38:30were one of
38:30the first ones to get this size bar and we've never looked back with it so far finger on the
38:35butter
38:38we sold 30 000 last week even though it's coming to the end of the trend because we make it
38:43viable
38:44and the price is right then you get people trying it without a doubt can i be honest i've never
38:49tested
38:49it and don't forget i'm on a diet oh come on chris time to pop your dubai chocolate cherry well
38:57here we go then
39:04it tastes all right it's good
39:11coming up dawn's meat is put to the test we're having a family barbecue tonight we're getting a
39:17bulk buy so we've got lots of food to treat everybody and wayne sees if his one penny breakfast
39:23bar's got the nation munching today's penny deal we put on the website at 6am ready for the advert
39:29so looking at the sales on that do i think that's a success
39:39in wigan wayne is tackling the six flights of stairs at his cotton mill company headquarters
39:45there's 96 steps i'm trying to only do them once a day i sometimes check my heart rate on my
39:52watch so
39:53right now 103 which i think is pretty decent resting rate 71 i think maybe you're just showing off now
40:02wayne here we go head of creative nile has just rocked up with a local speciality we can come out
40:25so what's in this wig and kebab then nile meat and my tape pie on a barn simple simple simple
40:32fee for a simple guy
40:34so not a kebab then
40:40yeah
40:42that's good yeah that's good than that don't find back
40:46go on wayne go on i'll feed this place won't be my baby
41:00what do you think out of ten good aim yeah i'll take that
41:04you want that but not everything's as tasty today after the fiasco of the last one penny
41:16promotional offer the kellogg cereal bars have now gone out as a one penny deal on the website
41:22but wayne's not dining out on the numbers so today's penny deal looking at the sales on that only 112
41:29sold do i think that's a success i'd say not it won't be running again i don't like calling things
41:36a failure because everything is a learning process you know we never fail we we learn uh what have we
41:42learned today don't give the cereal bar that prime position on a day when there's a tv advert but the
41:48good
41:49thing is we're in such a dynamic game if you like we go again tomorrow for every bad day we'll
41:55fix it
41:55and we'll have better days beating the supermarkets and giving cheap deals keeps wayne buzzing if
42:03someone says to me wayne are you are you a workaholic yes or no yeah my answer is yes you
42:10could never
42:10rest it's a 365 24 7 business you could say surplus never sleeps
42:17i'm extremely proud of the business it's what i love doing it's addictive
42:28hello dawn speaking how can i help hi don i'm just wondering if you've got a rough delivery time
42:33what postcode are you from her farmhouse in wales dawn brightwell is making it cheaper for the nation
42:40to buy meat you're going to be looking at after after half past one i know that much she's challenging
42:47the supermarket's hold on shopping with her cut price cuts that come directly from a wholesaler's
42:53surplus and fresh from a trip to the high street dawn's doing a price comparison
43:01we've got four quarter pound beef burgers four lamb chops here we've got 700 grams of pork chops on the
43:08bone we've got one sirloin steak we've got a kilo of chicken thighs we've got 750 grams of lean less
43:18than five percent fat mince chicken thighs a kilo with some pork loin steaks there and last but not
43:24least we've got some chicken breast fillets so i've paid in the supermarkets for that for 41 pound and 21
43:31i can produce you exactly what is there in front of you wait for weight lean for lean i could
43:38do you
43:38everything on there today for 30 pounds that's a saving of more than 25 percent meaning cheaper chops
43:45and less expensive loins i am heavily competing with supermarkets this is all down to cutting out the
43:53middle man working straight from the wholesaler and having low cost from working here from home producing
43:58orders you can get things cheaper by shopping around you can beat the supermarkets 150 miles away in
44:07yorkshire two of dawn's customers karen and jody are about to get a mass hoof meat delivery we're having
44:14a family barbecue tonight we're getting a bulk buy so we've got lots of food to treat everybody
44:36we've got some burgers no fat milk steaks and then we've got fry steak a big pack of that
44:43there's more meat here than you can shake a carving knife at spicy chicken fillets 10 sausages turkey
44:51steak garlic drumsticks crikey ladies is the hall of leeds coming to this barbecue and a garlic and herb
45:00hot loin joint which is absolutely marvelous we've got all this for a hundred pound at the supermarket
45:08easily probably about 160 pound i think yeah yeah it's a shame don don't do alcohol
45:17she doesn't do booze and that's probably a good thing but she is going to be marketing her meat for
45:24many moons to come oh hundred percent meats in my blood there is nothing else the brain is constantly
45:30ticking of what i can do with me what i can make a pack out of and what name i
45:36could give that pack
45:37that is what i live and breathe for the wholesaler sold 97 of dawn's 29.99 barbecue packs and the
45:44summer extravaganza pack went out to 85 customers north and south not bad for a butcher's daughter from
45:51bradford i think your old man would be proud of your door this is so the best thing that happened
45:56to me
45:56was being my dad's daughter wonderful man taught me everything i know to this day from the early days in
46:03the market selling me on car boots we did everything me and dad together all the way through so yeah
46:09it's
46:09very much in my blood as to what dad did and i followed his footsteps and i'm proud of that
46:14to this day
46:17so
46:30so
