00:00:59grades in school he doesn't have some terrible traumatic past he was very well educated with
00:01:06genius in his classes and he doesn't have one of those hard-to-know-my-mama-and-daddy
00:01:13stories he doesn't cat rejected a scholarship to the national science academy choosing instead to
00:01:19become a comedian and following the steps of his idols such as don knots phil cosby and richard pryor
00:01:25cat rarely speaks of his past but he does talk about his parents in this rare interview
00:01:29so the question was has my family always been supportive of what i did i mean that's
00:01:38i guess you could say yes about as much as a family would be supportive of somebody trying
00:01:43to do something that doesn't give you a guaranteed paycheck and doesn't involve college he spent the
00:01:48next few years bouncing around the nation eventually performing at comedy clubs in the san francisco area
00:01:53i say i probably knew cat 10 years before we even toured when i first started doing comedy in 93
00:02:00i had did this bay area comedy competition in oakland and i guess he saw me there or somebody did
00:02:07so i
00:02:07would go to oakland a lot to do shows back in the day and cat would bring me the first
00:02:12time that i knew
00:02:13about cat he wasn't just called cat he was cat in the hat back in the day cat in the
00:02:19hat and the thing
00:02:22i remember is that everywhere he went he just destroyed everything he just was it was like
00:02:30an explosion of comedy and he would leave the stage and the mic would literally be smoking and
00:02:37people would be wiping their face and they had spilt their drink word of mouth spread and his
00:02:42popularity rose he moved to los angeles and started to gain popularity at the comedy clubs i had like i
00:02:48say i ran a comedy club in moreno valley thursday night and i would just go to la and go
00:02:54to the
00:02:54comedy clubs and look for comedians to hire and bring out to my club he's just i mean he's one
00:03:00of
00:03:01the people i my hand to god that when i first seen him perform i knew he would change the
00:03:06face of comedy

00:05:18your life
00:05:19three o'clock in the morning

00:06:03at three o'clock in the afternoon hello
00:06:09damn nigga you know my story's on nigga call me back in an hour
00:06:13but it wasn't until 2002 that cat williams had his big breakthrough
00:06:18he was cast in a small but very memorable role as funny mike in the film friday after next
00:06:26uh see the thing is we just opened up round here you know what i'm saying and uh we've been
00:06:30having some problems obviously as you see
00:06:31i appreciate what y'all did because these cockroaches would have cleaned me out this season
00:06:35speaking of cockroaches
00:06:37where was your antennas when them niggas were stealing my shit out the stove

00:06:48work round there
00:06:49this ain't for play
00:06:50i don't do this for fun
00:06:51i'm sorry
00:06:52the thing that was crazy was
00:06:56he was so convincing in his role
00:06:58that people who didn't know him before us
00:07:01actually thought he was a pimp
00:07:04he had to really work to get that
00:07:07that off of him
00:07:09yeah money mike also was another stepping stone to the tour because once they saw him as money mike with
00:07:15ice cube it just set it off everybody who's this money mike who's this and then him portraying a pimp
00:07:21oh god they love that
00:07:22the film put cat's name on the media radar afterwards he appeared on several nationally syndicated shows including the tracy
00:07:30morgan show deaf comedy jam and my wife and kids as the fast talking break dancer bobby shaw
00:07:37oh my god it's it's it's bobby shaw
00:07:42fresh and in
00:07:45of the flesh
00:07:48how are you jake
00:07:50i'm fine thank you bobby
00:07:53you are still one
00:07:55funky cold medina
00:07:57appearing in only three episodes bobby shaw left an indelible mark on the show
00:08:03sup shaw
00:08:05sup michael
00:08:10you haven't changed a bit since high school
00:08:12thank you very much
00:08:13no i mean you haven't grown an inch
00:08:16yeah well thyroid plus i smoke cigarettes and drink coffee
00:08:22jay did you invite this man to my house
00:08:25invite this man you don't invite the wind the wind just blows in
00:08:32cat also took roles on shows not associated with conventional comedy
00:08:36i watched him once on girlfriends do a role that i was like wow i didn't even know cat could
00:08:43do that but he surprised me pleasantly surprised me so what do you do exactly
00:08:51well you know as a computer guy i mostly
00:08:57work on computers
00:08:59work on computers
00:09:28that's why white kids grow up and kill everybody in the goddamn school
00:09:31because you done treated them like a german shepherd ever since they were three
00:09:34they'd be in the store like oh i won't
00:09:37thumbs up and kill everybody in the city that actually doesn't want to
00:09:59see you guys
00:10:06like that
00:10:07and then for us to do the numbers that we did was wonderful.
00:10:12The DVD would go on to sell a million copies.
00:10:16Is your DVD collection in need of a pimp slap?
00:10:18Here's the man you need to see.
00:10:19This DVD is so pimped out, it's also available in alligator skin.
00:10:23By Cat Williams, The Pimp Chronicles on DVD.
00:10:26The secret of Cat's success was in his comedy.
00:10:29His jokes didn't just create laughs.
00:10:31They served other purposes as well.
00:10:33I think the reason why Cat's such a phenomenon
00:10:35is that he is totally aware of everything going on around him in the world
00:10:38with people, with like, this is my gangsta daughter
00:10:42or this is the way, if I was, you know,
00:10:45stuck working a bad job at McDonald's, this is what I would do.
00:10:49You're going to learn something.
00:10:50Not only are you going to get some laughs, he's trying to educate
00:10:52and you're going to find that he's, um, he's well-spoken
00:10:57and he knows this shit, he's quite articulate.
00:10:59Cat's comedy is extremely, rawly, unapologetically honest.
00:11:10He'll make a joke out of anything or anybody himself.
00:11:13It doesn't matter. It's all in fun.
00:11:16Cat explains his philosophy of comedy in this exclusive interview.
00:11:19If you're going to be the caliber of comic that I am,
00:11:22there's got to be a lot of bullshit in your life.
00:11:24Just a lot of, a lot of stuff and a lot of people watching
00:11:28and a lot of lies and truths and things that you saw
00:11:33that you weren't supposed to see
00:11:35and stuff you documented in your head
00:11:37and your head has to work a certain way to be a really good comic.
00:11:41At this point, Cat was a recognizable face for millions.
00:11:45His manic energy, yet super cool persona,
00:11:48made him a fan favorite.
00:11:50And though his fame accelerated at a fast pace,
00:11:53his graciousness to his fans never faltered.
00:11:56To this day, Cat still takes the time to sign autographs
00:12:00and connect with his fans.
00:12:02I think his fans is what really took him to that next level
00:12:05because they saw the love that they was getting back from him.
00:12:08He wasn't all, no, I ain't got time.
00:12:09Never, never did he not have time for a fan.
00:12:13If he had a show that he wasn't happy with,
00:12:15he'd give the fans their tickets.
00:12:17He'd refund them their tickets.
00:12:20Who does this?
00:12:22We were in a limousine in New York City one time.
00:12:25Traffic.
00:12:25And there was a kid way four lanes over
00:12:31walking on the street.
00:12:33He was yelling,
00:12:33Cat, Cat, I love you, man.
00:12:36You're my idol, Cat.
00:12:37Cat got out of the limo,
00:12:39which also sent the security out of the limo,
00:12:42went across four lanes of traffic,
00:12:44signed the boy's hat, took a picture with him,
00:12:46ran back through the traffic,
00:12:47got back in the car with these two big security guys following him.
00:12:51You know what I get scared?
00:12:52See all my six-foot fans walking up on me,
00:12:55big women putting their mouth on me,
00:12:57and I don't, their breath is tight.
00:12:59I don't care.
00:13:01I love them all.
00:13:03The fans' devotion to Cat can sometimes be hilariously obsessive.
00:13:06Well, I remember one young lady,
00:13:08she came with a wedding dress
00:13:10and said she was going to marry Cat.
00:13:12That was really funny.
00:13:14Every show, there's some fan,
00:13:16and I do a joke about it where I say,
00:13:17you know, the hoes be coming up to Cat.
00:13:19I know it's a ho out there
00:13:20because it's a ho at every show,
00:13:22and you should see them coming up to Cat.
00:13:23And so what she did was she pulled her titty out
00:13:26and asked Cat for an autograph,
00:13:28and Cat's like,
00:13:28where do you want me to sign?
00:13:30You know, he's all excited.
00:13:31I'm like, sign on one of them lines
00:13:33because Lord knows her titty had a whole bunch of stripes on it.
00:13:37The big girls would, like, you know,
00:13:40squeeze him to death,
00:13:41and he'd be buried in this big Atlanta bosom
00:13:45with his little head sticking out
00:13:47with big bosoms all around his head.
00:13:50Standing at only 5 feet 5 inches,
00:13:53jokes made about his height are common
00:13:55from both Cat and his friends.
00:13:57But I've been short all my life,
00:13:58and I've been beat down by more than six people at a time.
00:14:01Oh, Cat Williams.
00:14:04When did they start selling pimp clothes at Baby Gap?
00:14:11Jokes about his use of marijuana
00:14:13would prove to be extremely popular with his fans.
00:14:16Well, the marijuana jokes
00:14:18are based on extensive research by all of us,
00:14:22and they come from a place of love and appreciation for the plant.
00:14:27And that's all I'm going to say about that.
00:14:29Some of y'all just need to smoke some weed
00:14:31and see if it don't help the quality of your motherfucking life.
00:14:35I know, I see some of y'all.
00:14:36Look, I understand.
00:14:37If you ain't smoking weed because you got a good job,
00:14:40then by all means make your paper, boo-boo.
00:14:42But if you ain't got no job,
00:14:43and you're not smoking weed,
00:14:45I don't know what the fuck you are doing with your life.
00:14:47I really don't.
00:14:50Don't give me that shit about it's a drug.
00:14:52It ain't no motherfucking drug.
00:14:53I done done the research.
00:14:54It's just a plant.
00:14:55It just grow like that.
00:14:57And if you should happen to set it on fire,
00:15:02there are some effects.
00:15:04But that's not the same as drugs.
00:15:06Drugs, you got to do shit to it chemically.
00:15:08You got to add baking soda, water, stir it up.
00:15:10I don't know the recipe.
00:15:11I'm just saying.
00:15:14It's some shit you got to do to it.
00:15:17But why the fuck is it legal?
00:15:18I don't know.
00:15:19Aspirin is perfectly legal.
00:15:20But if you take 13 of them motherfuckers,
00:15:22it'll be your last headache.
00:15:25Long as you've been living,
00:15:27you ain't never heard of a motherfucker overdose on marijuana.
00:15:29You might have thought that nigga was dead.
00:15:31He ain't dead.
00:15:33He's going to wake up in 30 minutes
00:15:34hungry enough to eat up everything in your house.
00:15:37That's the side effects.
00:15:38Hungry, happy, sleepy.
00:15:40That's it.
00:15:41Instead of hiring the hottest comedians
00:15:43to open his shows,
00:15:44Cat chose old friends such as Linnell,
00:15:47Cookie, and Melanie Camacho
00:15:48for his opening acts.
00:15:50This group of comedians
00:15:51would later be known as the Cat Pack.
00:15:53Cat loved Frank Sinatra,
00:15:54and he loved the idea of the Rat Pack.
00:15:57When Cat reached back,
00:15:58literally reached back,
00:16:00and got me and asked me
00:16:02that I want to go on tour,
00:16:03it was my first opportunity
00:16:05to go on tour doing comedy,
00:16:07and I was very grateful
00:16:09Yeah, he changed my life
00:16:12by exposing me to the masses
00:16:15and to the audiences
00:16:18that he exposed me to.
00:16:19When he got to L.A.,
00:16:20he reached out for me
00:16:21to come do comedy.
00:16:22I've been, you know,
00:16:23wherever he was at,
00:16:24and he called me for the tour, you know.
00:16:26In addition to the priceless exposure,
00:16:29Cat's generosity exceeded
00:16:30their wildest dreams.
00:16:31Well, he surprised us all
00:16:33one day with a shopping spree
00:16:35when we were on the road,
00:16:37and he rented a bunch of vehicles
00:16:41and gave everybody a bunch of money
00:16:44and told us to go shopping,
00:16:45and we wasn't expecting that.
00:16:46He surprised me.
00:16:47I guess it must have been around Christmas,
00:16:49and I was admiring another lady's boots.
00:16:52You know, I'm the queen of boots.
00:16:53I have all the boots,
00:16:54and I saw some boots,
00:16:56and I was like,
00:16:56oh, them is bad.
00:16:57Where you get them from?
00:16:58And she didn't want to tell me
00:17:00or whatever,
00:17:00so a couple of weeks later,
00:17:02it was almost Christmas.
00:17:03Here comes this big old box,
00:17:04and I guess everybody else
00:17:06had seen them already on the tour,
00:17:07and I hadn't seen them yet,
00:17:09and they were like,
00:17:10I said,
00:17:11what is it?
00:17:11What is it?
00:17:12Don't worry.
00:17:12Just open the box.
00:17:13Open the box,
00:17:13and it was the boots.
00:17:14There they were.
00:17:15Cat's newfound visibility
00:17:16led to a slew
00:17:17of film and TV appearances.
00:17:19The multi-talented Williams
00:17:21was now allowed full reign
00:17:22to show off his many creative talent.
00:17:24Nick Cannon's Wild N' Out
00:17:25showcased Cat's freestyle skills.
00:17:27Now, Wayne Brady,
00:17:28I know you a star,
00:17:29but I got more chrome on this buckle
00:17:31than you got on your car.
00:17:32Your hickory, hickory dock.
00:17:34Your girl was on my f***.
00:17:37She gonna go to my house,
00:17:38I turned her out,
00:17:40and now she sells my r***.
00:17:44Cat also introduced
00:17:45one of his funniest characters,
00:17:47the hilariously corrupt
00:17:48Judge Moe Dollars.
00:17:49Justice has a new name,
00:17:51Judge Moe Dollars.
00:17:53Court is in s*** session.
00:17:56Judge Moe Dollars.
00:17:57Peaches,
00:17:58what the hell are you doing here?
00:18:00It's your damn kids.
00:18:01Look at Larry,
00:18:02six years old now,
00:18:02you ain't paying s***
00:18:03even six months.
00:18:04You gonna come in here
00:18:05on my show,
00:18:06and if it's me,
00:18:06bitch,
00:18:07you could've went
00:18:07to another court show.
00:18:08You could've went to
00:18:09damn Price Right.
00:18:11And if that wasn't enough,
00:18:12Cat began a recurring role
00:18:14on the popular animated show,
00:18:15The Boondocks.
00:18:17That's what I said,
00:18:17Slickback.
00:18:18No,
00:18:19no,
00:18:20it's a pimp named Slickback,
00:18:22like a tribe called Quest.
00:18:23You say the whole thing.
00:18:24A pimp named Slickback.
00:18:26Can we call you Slickback for short?
00:18:28No, n***a,
00:18:30I'm a pimp named Slickback.
00:18:32Crystal,
00:18:32who is this person?
00:18:34N***a,
00:18:34are you deaf?
00:18:35I'm a pimp named Slickback.
00:18:37Say it with me now.
00:18:40He's my pimp.
00:18:41Cat expanded his experience
00:18:43as an actor,
00:18:44landing roles in hit films
00:18:45such as Epic Movie and Norbit.
00:18:47Yes,
00:18:48for a limited time only,
00:18:49we are proud to present to you
00:18:51our barbecue,
00:18:52baby back,
00:18:54horseradish,
00:18:55mustard,
00:18:55and peanut butter
00:18:56encrusted ribs
00:18:57with a slight
00:18:58Jägermeister infusion
00:19:00sprinkled with
00:19:01chamomile leaves
00:19:02with a horseradish
00:19:03and dandelion salad
00:19:05on a bed of rice.
00:19:07Though not common
00:19:08in Hollywood film,
00:19:09much of Cat's characters
00:19:10and dialogue
00:19:11come from improvisation.
00:19:13Directing Cat
00:19:13and actually
00:19:14writing with Cat
00:19:16is a great way
00:19:17to take credit
00:19:18for funny stuff.
00:19:20I think that's
00:19:21what I learned
00:19:22more than anything
00:19:22from working with Cat
00:19:23is that
00:19:24you can put your name
00:19:25on something
00:19:25and he made it funny
00:19:27and then you get
00:19:27credit for it.
00:19:28He's a non-scripted actor.
00:19:31You give him a script
00:19:32but he's going to
00:19:34punch it up
00:19:34and say something
00:19:35more funnier
00:19:36than what you have
00:19:37written on your script.
00:19:38It's not nothing personal
00:19:39or nothing like that.
00:19:40It's just that
00:19:41sometimes you have to let
00:19:43that caliber
00:19:44of entertainer
00:19:45be themselves
00:19:46and when they be themselves
00:19:47it comes off
00:19:49exactly how you want it.
00:19:51What church are you in?
00:19:53Ricky, sit down.
00:19:54What?
00:19:55No, get your hands
00:19:56off of me.
00:19:56Sit down, man.
00:19:58It is hot
00:19:59as Satan's breath
00:20:00in here.
00:20:00Ricky, are you alright?
00:20:03Yes, I'm alright.
00:20:04Are you alright, miss?
00:20:05I just fainted
00:20:06trying to one-up me
00:20:07because you saw me
00:20:08faint one time
00:20:09and now you think
00:20:10everybody can faint.
00:20:11No, I'm fine.
00:20:13I am fine.
00:20:15I'm just a little frustrated.
00:20:17Kat's first taste
00:20:18of controversy
00:20:19came on November 6, 2006
00:20:22when Williams
00:20:22was arrested at LAX
00:20:24after a stolen gun
00:20:25was found
00:20:25in his carry-on bag.
00:20:27Once you pull up
00:20:28in front of the airport
00:20:29and get out
00:20:30with this new
00:20:31multimedia age,
00:20:33the pictures
00:20:33start there.
00:20:35The texts
00:20:35start there.
00:20:36Kat Williams
00:20:37is coming through
00:20:37the airport.
00:20:38So you get
00:20:39to the TSA agents
00:20:41and they always
00:20:42have some reason
00:20:43to try to pat him down.
00:20:45And, you know,
00:20:46could you step over here
00:20:47for additional screening?
00:20:49Please.
00:20:49Yeah, as if we didn't know
00:20:51that was gonna happen.
00:20:52What the fuck am I doing
00:20:52at the airport
00:20:53with a goddamn pistol
00:20:54and I'm supposed
00:20:54to be doing shows
00:20:55and shit?
00:20:57That was a mistake.
00:20:58I had too much luggage,
00:21:00too many guns.
00:21:01My motherfucking bag,
00:21:02at least my nigga friends
00:21:03understood.
00:21:04My white friends
00:21:05didn't understand at all.
00:21:07That motherfucker,
00:21:07what?
00:21:08What?
00:21:09He had a gun?
00:21:11Niggas like,
00:21:12uh, yeah.
00:21:15Nigga better have
00:21:16a motherfucking gun.
00:21:17White people was like,
00:21:18but it was stolen.
00:21:20Uh, yeah.
00:21:22I'm gonna shoot
00:21:23a nigga with my gun?
00:21:24What kind of bullshit
00:21:25is that?
00:21:26Bam, bam,
00:21:27there's the evidence.
00:21:27Come find me.
00:21:29His explanation
00:21:30was self-defense,
00:21:31given that he traveled
00:21:32in some dangerous places
00:21:33where guns were necessary.
00:21:35He was sentenced
00:21:36to three years probation,
00:21:37but the incident
00:21:38had become part
00:21:39of Kat's public image.
00:21:40Yeah, how was it?
00:21:41How was it in there?
00:21:43Uh, it was a jail.
00:21:44I don't recommend it
00:21:45on the day your DVD
00:21:46comes out.
00:21:47Thanks for everybody
00:21:48for buying it.
00:21:49It was a good look.
00:21:50What do you think?
00:21:51What's gonna happen?
00:21:52Are you gonna make it
00:21:53to the BET Awards?
00:21:54Going to the BET Awards
00:21:56right now.
00:21:57Right now, I'm going.
00:21:58Uh, but yeah.
00:21:59Thanks for everybody
00:22:00for your support.
00:22:01You're buying my DVD,
00:22:03helped me get out.
00:22:04Appreciate you
00:22:04for posting my bail for me.
00:22:06Uh, it's something
00:22:07that happens.
00:22:08Good stuff happens,
00:22:09bad stuff happens.
00:22:10It just happens.
00:22:10Thank you, guys.
00:22:12Kat's image also
00:22:13became synonymous
00:22:14with flashy outfits
00:22:15and expensive jewelry.
00:22:17Kat had always
00:22:17taken his fashion seriously
00:22:19as it contributes
00:22:20to his allure.
00:22:21For him to be the comic
00:22:24that brings bling
00:22:25to comics, you know,
00:22:27because comics
00:22:27wasn't blinged up
00:22:28until then.
00:22:30You know,
00:22:30the famous ones,
00:22:31they'd have a ring
00:22:32or watch,
00:22:34but to have it
00:22:35the way rappers have it,
00:22:38yeah, that's
00:22:39Kat Williams.
00:22:40You know,
00:22:41if you're gonna have
00:22:41hats for him,
00:22:42you better have
00:22:43some $30,000 hats
00:22:45that no one else
00:22:45has ever worn,
00:22:46and you better have
00:22:47a selection,
00:22:48because there's a reason
00:22:49he likes one,
00:22:50and there's a reason
00:22:50he doesn't like another.
00:22:51The more successful
00:22:52you are,
00:22:53the better you dress,
00:22:55the more you bling.
00:22:56It's just to show
00:22:58everybody else,
00:22:58hey, I've arrived.
00:23:00Let me also ask
00:23:01about the jewelry.
00:23:04This is nice.
00:23:05This is jewelry.
00:23:06Yeah, I'm becoming
00:23:07the new Liberace,
00:23:08it appears.
00:23:08Everybody wants to
00:23:10talk about the jewelry.
00:23:11I just need the motivation.
00:23:12I need to look down
00:23:13and see I'm doing something
00:23:14to keep me excited
00:23:16about things.
00:23:16Right, right, right.
00:23:17So you look down
00:23:19and you see,
00:23:19like, things are good.
00:23:20Yes, things are good.
00:23:21Don't worry about
00:23:22the economy,
00:23:22the recession,
00:23:23the mortgage,
00:23:24the cash prices.
00:23:25Let's ignore all that.
00:23:26Cat is meticulously
00:23:27involved in every detail
00:23:29of his wardrobe,
00:23:30including designing
00:23:31his outfits.
00:23:32But, like,
00:23:32something wild,
00:23:33you know,
00:23:34like, the color
00:23:35didn't do us
00:23:36very much
00:23:36for a disservice,
00:23:37and if we can
00:23:37keep it open,
00:23:39we're actually
00:23:39showcasing the belt,
00:23:40even with the tux,
00:23:41that'd be cool.
00:23:42We found one pair
00:23:44of tuxedo pants
00:23:45that actually has
00:23:46a belt,
00:23:46which makes it,
00:23:47which brings it
00:23:49into another century,
00:23:50because then you
00:23:51can have the,
00:23:51you know,
00:23:52the gaugly diamond
00:23:54encrusted belt
00:23:55out of your touch.
00:23:56Cat's fans might wonder
00:23:57what lies behind
00:23:58all of the diamonds
00:23:59and expensive clothes.
00:24:00Cat's public persona
00:24:02and his private persona
00:24:03are vastly different.
00:24:07His public persona
00:24:08is he's got a bunch
00:24:09of bravado
00:24:10and lots of diamonds
00:24:13and flashy clothes
00:24:16and cars
00:24:17and all that stuff,
00:24:18and that's him.
00:24:19But on the other side,
00:24:21he's extremely intellectual,
00:24:23he's very well-read,
00:24:25he's very much
00:24:26up on his politics,
00:24:27he's a lot quieter
00:24:29in person,
00:24:30he loves children,
00:24:33he loves home life,
00:24:36and he has a really huge,
00:24:39huge, huge heart.
00:24:41If you ever meet Cat,
00:24:42he's going to want
00:24:43to play basketball,
00:24:44he's going to want
00:24:45to shoot at the pool
00:24:46with you,
00:24:46he'll pitch horseshoes
00:24:48and miniature golf.
00:24:51He's a competitor
00:24:51and he's a life competitor.
00:24:56He competes for life.
00:24:58You might not expect it,
00:25:00but he's a nice guy,
00:25:03he's a polite guy,
00:25:05he's respectful,
00:25:07but at the same time,
00:25:09if you don't respect him,
00:25:12he's not going to be happy.
00:25:13There are a few things
00:25:14guaranteed to make Cat happy,
00:25:16one being a popular dessert.
00:25:18He loved
00:25:21apple pies.
00:25:23We would stop at McDonald's
00:25:25and get like $10
00:25:26for apple pies.
00:25:28Another of Cat's
00:25:30favorite indulgences
00:25:31is a popular beverage
00:25:32probably helpful
00:25:33for his endurance.
00:25:34The blue Gatorade,
00:25:36yeah,
00:25:37I don't think he could live
00:25:39without the blue Gatorade.
00:25:41A sign of his increasing stardom,
00:25:44Cat was given
00:25:45the prestigious role
00:25:46of MC
00:25:46for BET's
00:25:472007 Hip Hop Awards.
00:25:50But Cat created
00:25:51a media storm
00:25:52of his own
00:25:52when he arrived
00:25:53on the red carpet
00:25:54in a shiny pink suit
00:25:55with a noose
00:25:56wrapped around his neck.
00:25:58Like when the racers
00:25:59were putting them nooses
00:26:00on black university
00:26:01professors' doors
00:26:02and shit
00:26:03and hanging the nooses
00:26:04off of trees and shit
00:26:05and I got fucking mad
00:26:06and put a noose
00:26:07on my neck
00:26:08and walked down
00:26:08the red carpet
00:26:09of the Hip Hop Awards.
00:26:10I was trying to say
00:26:12niggas ain't scared
00:26:13of rope.
00:26:14It's the fucking hanging
00:26:16we had a problem with.
00:26:17So if you not gonna
00:26:18hang them, motherfucker,
00:26:19then what the fuck
00:26:20is you putting nooses around
00:26:21trying to scare
00:26:22some goddamn body for?
00:26:24His display seemed
00:26:25tasteless and insensitive
00:26:26to some members
00:26:27of the black community.
00:26:28He was baffled
00:26:29by the reaction
00:26:30but didn't apologize
00:26:31for his behavior.
00:26:32Aside from court
00:26:33and controversy,
00:26:35Cat showed a softer side
00:26:36to the public,
00:26:37sharing deep
00:26:38tales about his role
00:26:39as a father
00:26:40to eight children,
00:26:41seven of whom
00:26:42were adopted.
00:26:43He has his son,
00:26:45Micah, of course,
00:26:46his biological son
00:26:47and then the woman
00:26:49that he had children,
00:26:52a child with,
00:26:53had more kids
00:26:54and Cat just didn't want
00:26:55his son separated
00:26:57from his sisters
00:26:58and brothers.
00:26:58She had a substance
00:26:59abuse problem
00:27:00and the kids were all
00:27:01gonna be going
00:27:02through the system.
00:27:02So Cat adopted
00:27:04all of her kids
00:27:05and got them back
00:27:06out of the system
00:27:07and got some
00:27:08before they ever
00:27:09went in.
00:27:10I'm gonna say a word.
00:27:11You tell me
00:27:11the first thing
00:27:12you think about.
00:27:13Ready?
00:27:13Muffins.
00:27:15Big eggs.
00:27:16All right.
00:27:17And here we go.
00:27:19Syrup.
00:27:20Big eggs.
00:27:22All right.
00:27:23Breakfast time
00:27:24next to the bacon.
00:27:27Syrup.
00:27:28Syrup.
00:27:29Cat jokingly refers
00:27:30to his family life
00:27:31in both interviews
00:27:32and his comedy sets.
00:27:34I don't know.
00:27:34It's crazy.
00:27:34You try to do something
00:27:35good with your life
00:27:36but adoption is
00:27:37such a crap shoot.
00:27:38You never, you know.
00:27:40It's just like
00:27:41reaching in a bag.
00:27:42You're like,
00:27:42come on.
00:27:43Oh, no, that's a murderer.
00:27:44That's a murderer.
00:27:45It's wonderful.
00:27:46It's good for being a father
00:27:48and I didn't have to go
00:27:49all the way to Africa
00:27:50to find these.
00:27:50These were...
00:27:52Right here.
00:27:53You'd be surprised.
00:27:54There were like
00:27:54needy children
00:27:55right down the street.
00:27:56Wow.
00:27:57That's amazing.
00:27:57On January 13th, 2008,
00:28:01Cat Williams'
00:28:02second comedy special,
00:28:03American Hustle,
00:28:04premiered on Comedy Central
00:28:06to nearly 2 million viewers.
00:28:19Hey, God damn it.
00:28:20What's going on, Chicago?
00:28:22Shit!
00:28:23The film documented
00:28:24Cat's massively successful
00:28:262007 comedy tour
00:28:27but also added
00:28:28a new twist.
00:28:29The movie featured
00:28:30elaborate sets
00:28:31and a scripted plot
00:28:32inspired by
00:28:33Williams' experience
00:28:34in Hollywood.
00:28:35My pitch was that
00:28:36we would make fun
00:28:37of the executives
00:28:38who were sort of,
00:28:40you know,
00:28:42trying to control
00:28:43Cat
00:28:44and Cat's life
00:28:45and his career.
00:28:46We
00:28:47want to be in the film business
00:28:49with Cat Williams.
00:28:52Okay.
00:28:53All right.
00:28:54All right.
00:28:54Here's how we see it.
00:28:56Okay.
00:28:56Let me throw some names at you.
00:28:58Please.
00:28:58Eddie Murphy.
00:28:59Eddie Murphy.
00:28:59Martin Lawrence.
00:29:00Martin Lawrence.
00:29:01Tyler Perry.
00:29:01Tyler Perry.
00:29:02All took their motherfucking career
00:29:05to the next motherfucking level
00:29:07with one device
00:29:08that makes a good movie
00:29:11into a great movie.
00:29:14Okay.
00:29:15Fat suit.
00:29:39Cat's jokes from the American
00:29:41Hustle Tour for his best.
00:29:42Crocodile Hunter
00:29:43was the shit.
00:29:45He wasn't scared of shit.
00:29:46If you think he ain't gangster,
00:29:47go to your neighbor's house
00:29:48and jump on their Rottweilers
00:29:49and see how that work out for you.
00:29:54That white boy was the shit
00:29:55because he wasn't mean
00:29:56or nasty or nothing.
00:29:58He was friendly
00:29:59and informational.
00:30:02Motherfuck would be
00:30:03hunting crocodiles.
00:30:04Oh, that's a beauty
00:30:05right there, mate.
00:30:07All right, I've got her
00:30:08in my sights now.
00:30:10Wait for it.
00:30:11Wait for it.
00:30:12Wait.
00:30:27She tried to do
00:30:28the bloody death roll on me.
00:30:29Did you see?
00:30:30I tried to roll.
00:30:32American Hustle
00:30:33features celebrity cameos
00:30:34by the brand Snoop Dogg,
00:30:36Ludacris,
00:30:37and Jeremy Piven.
00:30:38Now, here's my question to you.
00:30:39Do you have your inner pimp
00:30:41with you now?
00:30:44You waited way too long.
00:30:46What the fuck are you doing?
00:30:47Of course you do.
00:30:48American Hustle
00:30:49was originally supposed to feature
00:30:50several more of Cat's
00:30:52celebrity friends.
00:30:53So there were so many people
00:30:54who wanted to be in it.
00:30:54Like, I mean,
00:30:55Shaq wanted to be in it.
00:30:56Terry Crews wanted to be in it.
00:30:58Samuel Jackson.
00:30:59Like, it was actually,
00:31:00it was kind of crazy
00:31:01because it would be like,
00:31:02Cat would be like,
00:31:02I got to take this
00:31:03because it's Shaq.
00:31:03And so,
00:31:06and, you know,
00:31:06we just couldn't,
00:31:07because we had such
00:31:08a late schedule
00:31:09and Shaq was in Miami,
00:31:10Samuel Jackson was
00:31:11shooting something somewhere.
00:31:12And so a lot of those people,
00:31:14we just couldn't get them in.
00:31:15For the live show,
00:31:16Williams reached back
00:31:17to his cat pack,
00:31:18choosing Linnell,
00:31:19Red Grant,
00:31:20and Melanie Camacho
00:31:21for opening acts.
00:31:22They starred in the film as well.
00:31:24It was like touring
00:31:25with your best friends.
00:31:27We played so many games
00:31:29and had so much fun.
00:31:30People stop you on the street.
00:31:31Did y'all really travel
00:31:32in that car?
00:31:34Like, hell no,
00:31:35we didn't travel
00:31:35in that car
00:31:36in that Cadillac.
00:31:38But if we had,
00:31:40it would have been
00:31:41just like it looked
00:31:42in the movie.
00:31:43I'm just sitting back
00:31:44and saying,
00:31:44if this is any indication
00:31:46of what's going to happen tonight,
00:31:47I'm going to get home.
00:31:49It's a little bit of an indication.
00:31:50And hey,
00:31:51don't be wearing
00:31:51them bright colors
00:31:52to the show.
00:31:53Wait a minute.
00:31:54Trying to blind somebody.
00:31:55Wait a minute.
00:31:55She does not speak for Pippin'.
00:31:58I know you already
00:31:59got it picked out.
00:32:00No nine green gators tonight.
00:32:02Only nine green gators.
00:32:04I want all the crippled
00:32:05keloid women
00:32:05to wear your loud colors
00:32:06and come on.
00:32:07No, no, no.
00:32:08You told my cat
00:32:10can't come to the show now.
00:32:11I can't go now.
00:32:12We don't want my bag
00:32:13and the skittles
00:32:13all up in the performance.
00:32:15That's cat every night.
00:32:18I represent
00:32:19the opinion of Pippin'.
00:32:20I want the pimpers
00:32:21to come now.
00:32:22Anybody with polyester
00:32:23gets 10% off?
00:32:25That's right.
00:32:26The show goes down
00:32:27tonight,
00:32:27Donald Charleston
00:32:28performing on center.
00:32:29Showtime is at what time?
00:32:30I don't know.
00:32:317.30,
00:32:327.00,
00:32:337.00-ish.
00:32:34I hope you are not
00:32:38the opening of that
00:32:38because you don't know
00:32:39what time.
00:32:39Uh-oh,
00:32:40you in trouble now.
00:32:41Stories from behind
00:32:42the scenes say
00:32:42that Cat and his friends
00:32:43were riding high
00:32:44during the filming
00:32:45of American Hustle,
00:32:46so to speak.
00:32:47There was a scene
00:32:48in the movie
00:32:50where we had to
00:32:52smoke some weed.
00:32:53Cat Williams
00:32:53is not the man
00:32:55to fake smoking weed.
00:32:58So,
00:32:59you know,
00:33:00from a professional
00:33:02standpoint,
00:33:02it makes things funnier
00:33:03to the people
00:33:05who were smoking it.
00:33:07So,
00:33:08I remember Brett,
00:33:08the director,
00:33:09he said,
00:33:10okay,
00:33:11you guys get
00:33:12get the fake joints
00:33:14out here.
00:33:14And we were like,
00:33:15fake joints?
00:33:17And he was like,
00:33:18yeah,
00:33:18we're like,
00:33:19well,
00:33:19we got some real weed.
00:33:21And he's like,
00:33:22who's got weed?
00:33:22We're like,
00:33:23I do,
00:33:23I do,
00:33:24I do,
00:33:24I do.
00:33:25Red,
00:33:26Grant,
00:33:27doesn't smoke.
00:33:28But he had to smoke
00:33:30during the scene.
00:33:31So he's getting all
00:33:33messed up
00:33:34and,
00:33:35you know,
00:33:35we were just giggling
00:33:36and it was just crazy,
00:33:38it was fun.
00:33:38And then you watch
00:33:40Red and he's just,
00:33:41you know,
00:33:42all of a sudden
00:33:43he's getting twitchy
00:33:44and his eyes are bloodshot
00:33:46and he just starts laughing
00:33:47so hard.
00:33:53Flexing his musical muscles,
00:33:55Cat made guest appearances
00:33:56on albums by Ludacris,
00:33:58Lil' Kim,
00:33:58and several others.
00:34:00He writes his own songs
00:34:01and records in the studio
00:34:02when he finds time.
00:34:05A long time ago
00:34:06I had a,
00:34:07I was attempting
00:34:09to start a record
00:34:09like the Ricochet Records
00:34:11and I never got started
00:34:12but I knew a bunch
00:34:13of rappers
00:34:14and I would take Cat
00:34:17to the studio
00:34:17and he would out
00:34:19rap these rappers.
00:34:21I mean,
00:34:21these are real
00:34:22professional rappers
00:34:23and these guys
00:34:24are really,
00:34:24you know,
00:34:24out here on the struggle
00:34:25and out here on the grind
00:34:26and they writing
00:34:27and he is blowing
00:34:29them out the water.
00:34:30His rap music,
00:34:31he's passionate about.
00:34:33He's very passionate
00:34:34about,
00:34:34it's very good.
00:34:36I mean,
00:34:37it stands out there
00:34:38with the rest of them.
00:34:39And he raps
00:34:40about topical things
00:34:42and he's very witty,
00:34:43very smart,
00:34:45lyricist
00:34:46and he's,
00:34:47he's an excellent rapper.
00:34:49He really is.
00:34:49But I think
00:34:50that there's nothing
00:34:51that he couldn't do
00:34:53that he wants to do.
00:34:56The next step
00:34:57for the next game
00:34:58of comedy
00:34:59Where the man says
00:35:01All you gotta do
00:35:02is laugh
00:35:05I don't want
00:35:07all your money.
00:35:08I'll take that.
00:35:10Cat may be a rapper,
00:35:11but his taste in music
00:35:12might surprise his fans.
00:35:14Cat
00:35:16used to always
00:35:17play in the limousine.
00:35:20Corinne Bailey
00:35:30You wouldn't think
00:35:31that he would listen
00:35:32to her.
00:35:33But he listens to her.
00:35:34He listens to a lot
00:35:35of rock and roll.
00:35:37He listens to
00:35:40symphony music
00:35:42and arias
00:35:43and he's
00:35:44very well-rounded.
00:35:46He's not what
00:35:47you would think.
00:35:47His musical tastes
00:35:49are all over the place.
00:35:51But the Corinne Bailey
00:35:53Ray thing
00:35:53really threw me.
00:35:55Though busy
00:35:56with his own music career,
00:35:57Williams took the time
00:35:58to appear in music videos
00:35:59for Outkast,
00:36:00Ludacris,
00:36:01Sugar Free,
00:36:02E-40,
00:36:03Nick Cannon,
00:36:04and Lil' Kim.
00:36:05Raise your right hand.
00:36:07Put it over
00:36:08your left shoulder
00:36:09and smack the taste
00:36:11out of anybody.
00:36:12Say any more rumors
00:36:13about anybody,
00:36:14let alone Lil' Kim.
00:36:16Now,
00:36:16wealthy from the success
00:36:17of his films,
00:36:18Cat built a luxurious
00:36:19estate in Los Angeles,
00:36:21California.
00:36:22He gave fellow comedian
00:36:23Kathy Griffin
00:36:24a rare inside look.
00:36:26His regal property
00:36:27includes a collection
00:36:27of cars,
00:36:28a golf course,
00:36:29and a mini zoo.
00:36:31Cat's living style
00:36:33is extravagant,
00:36:36lavish,
00:36:37to say the least.
00:36:38And you wouldn't believe
00:36:40that he waters
00:36:41all of his plants.
00:36:42You know,
00:36:43he takes his little thing,
00:36:44he waters all his love,
00:36:46he got a green thumb.
00:36:47He's a big kid,
00:36:48he got lots of toys,
00:36:50which are cars,
00:36:51he got lots of toys,
00:36:52he likes to play,
00:36:53and dogs,
00:36:53he's a dog lover.
00:36:54He's got plenty of dogs,
00:36:56you'd be scared to go over
00:36:57Cat's house,
00:36:57all the damn dogs around.
00:36:59Fresh from the success
00:37:00of American Hustle,
00:37:01Cat hit the road again
00:37:02with an all-new show.
00:37:04In a historic year,
00:37:06only one man
00:37:07has the courage
00:37:07to take on Washington
00:37:08and tackle
00:37:09the big issues.
00:37:12What's going on,
00:37:13dude, please?
00:37:14Selling out several nights
00:37:16at New York's
00:37:17Radio City Music Hall
00:37:18and other large venues,
00:37:20It's Pimpin' Pimpin'
00:37:21was named
00:37:21the number one
00:37:22comedy show

00:37:30side of Cat,
00:37:30including a new focus
00:37:32on politics
00:37:32and the then-upcoming election.
00:37:34Um, the Pimpin' Pimpin'
00:37:36tour,
00:37:36he got political
00:37:39maybe because
00:37:39the election
00:37:40was coming up,
00:37:41but I think it's just
00:37:41the subjects
00:37:42that people want to hear
00:37:43that you have to touch
00:37:45when you're a comedian.
00:37:46All they want to talk about
00:37:47is the election.
00:37:48The election,
00:37:49it's time for a new president.
00:37:50I think first
00:37:51we need to celebrate
00:37:52the fact that Bush
00:37:53ain't gonna be president
00:37:54no goddamn more.
00:37:55First.
00:37:56First.
00:37:59This motherfucker.
00:38:02I don't understand.

00:38:14water,
00:38:15air,
00:38:15everything.
00:38:17And he's not just stupid.
00:38:18Bush don't even
00:38:19give a fuck.
00:38:20He won't even try.
00:38:21At least if you're stupid,
00:38:23you should try.
00:38:24He don't even try.
00:38:25I don't even know
00:38:26why he go to
00:38:26the press conference.
00:38:27He don't even be
00:38:28talking about shit.
00:38:29They even be
00:38:30talking about it.
00:38:30They just,
00:38:31what do you think
00:38:31about the problem
00:38:32in dark fur?
00:38:33You get on that horse,
00:38:34you gotta ride it.
00:38:39Who the fuck
00:38:40asked him about
00:38:41a goddamn horse?
00:38:43Then he walk off
00:38:44like he done really
00:38:44said some shit.
00:38:49Opening for Cat
00:38:50on the tour
00:38:50were Cookie
00:38:51and Big Les.
00:38:53Big Les'
00:38:53high-energy antics
00:38:54made for a memorable act.
00:38:56Yeah,
00:38:57let's start with
00:38:57the two serial killers.
00:38:58Who the fuck

00:39:13You look sick.
00:39:14You look sick, nigga.
00:39:15This is a pedophile sweater,
00:39:17nigga.
00:39:17That's...
00:39:18Cat even added a joke
00:39:20about Big Les
00:39:20into his routine.
00:39:22Can we please
00:39:22give it up for Leslie
00:39:23one time?
00:39:24Can we give it up
00:39:25to you and Leslie
00:39:26one time?
00:39:27I be wanting Leslie
00:39:29to suck my dick,
00:39:29but she look like
00:39:30she take it way too serious.
00:39:32She look like
00:39:33she'll suck a nigga dick
00:39:34long past the point
00:39:35of being a man about it.
00:39:36Just wait a minute,
00:39:37Leslie.
00:39:38Stop it.
00:39:40You're...
00:39:44You're hurting me,
00:39:45Leslie.
00:39:48There's nothing else
00:39:49in there.

00:41:15like it was
00:41:16a national tragedy
00:41:17and shit.
00:41:18Just,
00:41:18oh,
00:41:20it's so sad.
00:41:21What?
00:41:22I didn't see
00:41:23nothing sad
00:41:24at all.
00:41:25These was grown motherfuckers.
00:41:27I feel like
00:41:27if you a grown motherfucker
00:41:29and you get killed
00:41:30and you get killed
00:41:32by a tiger
00:41:33and you get killed
00:41:35by a tiger
00:41:35in a zoo,
00:41:36I think God's will
00:41:37has been done
00:41:38for your life.
00:41:39I think that's exactly
00:41:40what the fuck's
00:41:41supposed to happen
00:41:42and these motherfuckers
00:41:43zookeepers
00:41:43got on TV
00:41:44and started
00:41:45talking shit
00:41:46about the tigers.
00:41:48Start snitching
00:41:49on the tigers
00:41:50like they was
00:41:51disappointed
00:41:51in the tigers
00:41:52and shit.
00:41:53Like,
00:41:53we can't believe
00:41:54they would even
00:41:55do something like that.
00:41:56They've never done
00:41:56anything like that before
00:41:57and if they're a danger
00:41:59to the community,
00:42:00then we'll have
00:42:00to get rid of them.
00:42:01You gonna get rid
00:42:02of the tiger?
00:42:03You gonna get rid
00:42:04of the only real
00:42:05motherfucker
00:42:05in the whole goddamn equation?
00:42:07You gonna get rid
00:42:08of the tiger?
00:42:09Fuck that.
00:42:09I'm a parent.
00:42:10I got kids.
00:42:11I feel like
00:42:11if you raise a child
00:42:12at any age
00:42:13that's dumb enough
00:42:14to climb
00:42:14into a tiger's cage,
00:42:16you should tell them
00:42:17the rest
00:42:18of the goddamn story.
00:42:19Then the tiger
00:42:20eat your asshole
00:42:21out, baby.
00:42:22That's the end.
00:42:23But for Cat,
00:42:24more controversy
00:42:24was on its way.
00:42:26Exactly two years
00:42:27to the day
00:42:27that he had been arrested
00:42:28for concealing a gun,
00:42:30Cat was arrested
00:42:31on November 7, 2008
00:42:33after cops allegedly
00:42:34spotted three guns
00:42:35in his 10-person
00:42:36posse's convoy.
00:42:37The incident further
00:42:38reinforced his street persona.
00:42:40Fortunately for Cat,
00:42:41weapons possessing charges
00:42:42against Williams
00:42:43were made a drop.
00:42:44One time,
00:42:45Cat was arrested
00:42:48and got bailed out.
00:42:50You know,
00:42:50I have a theater
00:42:51full of people
00:42:53waiting to see him
00:42:55and they were able
00:42:56to get him out
00:42:57and, shoot,
00:42:58came straight to the show
00:42:59and went on stage
00:43:00and said,
00:43:01I just got out of jail
00:43:03just literally
00:43:05minutes ago.
00:43:07Always known
00:43:08to share his wealth
00:43:09and success,
00:43:09many of Cat's friends
00:43:11tell stories about Cat
00:43:12giving back to his fans.
00:43:13This headline you were in
00:43:14said,
00:43:15Cat Williams hands out
00:43:16$100 bills
00:43:17at Comedy Club.
00:43:18What was that all about?
00:43:19I saw that on the news.
00:43:20You were just handing out money.
00:43:21It was a robbery,
00:43:23actually.
00:43:25No,
00:43:25I was trying to pay
00:43:26my tithes,
00:43:27you know.
00:43:28Sometimes you had to
00:43:29just go to the people
00:43:30and actually pay it directly.
00:43:32Really?
00:43:33Cat has such a big heart.
00:43:34He would do stuff like,
00:43:36we're on stage,
00:43:37show is over,
00:43:38we're doing a college,
00:43:38Cat takes $5,000 cash,
00:43:41hundreds out of his pocket,
00:43:42throws it to the college students.
00:43:44These kids are about
00:43:45to kill themselves
00:43:45trying to get into the $5,000.
00:43:48Your problems becomes his
00:43:49and he tries to figure out
00:43:51the way they help you solve them.
00:43:52As 2008 rolled to a close,
00:43:54Cat's popularity
00:43:55eclipsed almost all of those
00:43:57who he saw as competition
00:43:58in the urban comedy market.
00:44:00Fueled by both the comics
00:44:02and comedy fans,
00:44:03a battle brewed
00:44:04between Steve Harvey
00:44:05and Williams.
00:44:06Harvey was the only comedian
00:44:08that Cat saw as a threat
00:44:09to the throne
00:44:10of being the king
00:44:10of black comedy.
00:44:12I thought he was cool,
00:44:13I gave him love every time,
00:44:14had him on my show every time.
00:44:15But if you're gonna do
00:44:16another stick,
00:44:17just tell the brother
00:44:18that you're sticking with me.
00:44:19Dog.
00:44:19I'm gonna be dogging you
00:44:20on the radio.
00:44:21But it's just,
00:44:22we just moved and take it.
00:44:24We can go in the huddle
00:44:25and go let it break.
00:44:26But now,
00:44:27don't just do it.
00:44:28Then I come to town
00:44:29and I hear about it.
00:44:30Because then tonight,
00:44:31now I just gonna do
00:44:32what I do.
00:44:33I don't say nothing negative.
00:44:35My show is my show.
00:44:36All right?
00:44:36Steve Harvey's a radio disc jockey.
00:44:39Okay?
00:44:40He's the host of the four guys
00:44:42who all wear the same suit.
00:44:44Okay?
00:44:45He's the host of that show.
00:44:47Cat Williams is this new voice,
00:44:49this different voice.
00:44:51Attention built to a crescendo
00:44:52on December 31st, 2008,
00:44:54when Harvey and Williams
00:44:55were put on the same bill
00:44:56in Detroit
00:44:57as the Battle of the Comedy.
00:44:58The championship of comedy
00:45:00with the original king,
00:45:02Steve Harvey.
00:45:04This ain't the radio show.
00:45:06And the king of underground comedy,
00:45:08Cat Williams,
00:45:09in his last comedy stand-up performance.
00:45:11It was almost like
00:45:12you had to choose sides.
00:45:14Who was you,
00:45:15or you're on Team Steve
00:45:17or Team Cat.
00:45:18Looking at my Gucci,
00:45:19it's almost that time.
00:45:21Ladies and gentlemen,
00:45:22I cannot wait
00:45:23to get to Detroit.
00:45:24I know what you heard.
00:45:25I know what people been saying.
00:45:27I promise you,
00:45:30they over-exaggerated.
00:45:33I am on my way.
00:45:35And if you like me,
00:45:37you should be there.
00:45:39And if you don't like me,
00:45:41you should be there.
00:45:42Based on the audience's reaction,
00:45:44Williams was the crib-cut victim.
00:45:46Cat made a concert
00:45:48out of just verbally
00:45:49abusing Steve Harvey.
00:45:51You should have talked about me
00:45:53the way I've been
00:45:54to talk about his bitch name.
00:45:57And if you're going to be
00:45:58going to go to a championship,
00:46:00I'm looking.
00:46:02You did.
00:46:02You did.
00:46:05Steve Harvey should have
00:46:06never did that.
00:46:07He should have just did the show
00:46:08and not called it a battle
00:46:10and all that.
00:46:11Because it's hard for you
00:46:12to step in a ring
00:46:14that you're not used to.
00:46:17Okay?
00:46:18Steve Harvey is not used
00:46:19to the Cat Williams ring.
00:46:21You can't step in
00:46:22Muhammad Ali's ring
00:46:23if you,
00:46:24if you,
00:46:25uh,
00:46:26uh,
00:46:27is a wrestler
00:46:28and not a boxer.
00:46:29Cat,
00:46:30when he goes on stage,
00:46:31it's,
00:46:32it's war.
00:46:34It's war.
00:46:36And normally,
00:46:37it's just
00:46:37a war of jokes.
00:46:39It's not directed
00:46:40at a person.
00:46:42Or,
00:46:43you know,
00:46:43it's,
00:46:44and it's,
00:46:44it's not,
00:46:45it's just,
00:46:46uh,
00:46:46just jokes.
00:46:47And I don't know
00:46:48how it got to that level,
00:46:50but it was just a joke.
00:46:53It should have been just jokes.
00:46:54That night also served
00:46:56as another important landmark.
00:46:57As Cat announced
00:46:58that he would make the show
00:47:00his final stand-up performance,
00:47:02citing wear and tear
00:47:03on the road,
00:47:04the need to keep
00:47:04his family together,
00:47:05and a desire to help
00:47:06young up-and-coming
00:47:07comedy acts
00:47:08get their start.
00:47:09He speaks about his retirement
00:47:11in the following interview,
00:47:12his final on the subject.
00:47:15I'm retired.
00:47:16That means I'm done.
00:47:17That don't mean
00:47:18if something else
00:47:19comes down the pike,
00:47:20what,
00:47:21what,
00:47:21what comes down the pike,
00:47:23the opportunity
00:47:24to do stand-up again.
00:47:25I've been doing stand-up
00:47:26for 18 years.
00:47:27That's long enough
00:47:28to have a baby
00:47:28and get it out the house,
00:47:29right?
00:47:30That's true.
00:47:31A lot of this
00:47:34retirement time,
00:47:35it was just that
00:47:36it's a good time
00:47:36for my children,
00:47:37you know?
00:47:38And they,
00:47:38they already gave
00:47:40so much to comedy.
00:47:41I didn't believe
00:47:42that he wanted
00:47:42to expand himself
00:47:43and do other things,
00:47:44but I never knew
00:47:45that he would step down
00:47:46from stand-up.
00:47:47You know,
00:47:47sometimes when you think
00:47:48you've done it all,
00:47:49it's like,
00:47:50what next?
00:47:50You go out on top
00:47:52or come back
00:47:53and go down low?
00:47:54So, you know,
00:47:55I guess he'd want
00:47:56to quit while he's ahead,
00:47:57I'm assuming.
00:47:58I think he reached
00:47:59the point that he wanted
00:48:00to reach,
00:48:01but will he come back?
00:48:05I don't know.
00:48:05I think Kat decided
00:48:08to retire
00:48:09because he got
00:48:11tired of all
00:48:12the stuff
00:48:13that goes
00:48:14with a tour
00:48:15that big
00:48:16and with the business.
00:48:17I don't think
00:48:18he got tired
00:48:18of doing comedy.
00:48:19I don't think
00:48:20he's tired
00:48:21of doing comedy now.
00:48:22I don't think
00:48:23that he'll never
00:48:23do comedy again.
00:48:25I don't think that.
00:48:26But I think
00:48:27when you get that big
00:48:28and the deals
00:48:29start coming through
00:48:31and the lawyers
00:48:32start coming in
00:48:33and the lawsuits
00:48:34start coming in
00:48:36and people want
00:48:37to take advantage
00:48:38of you
00:48:39and the jealousies
00:48:41start to play in
00:48:42and a little haterade
00:48:44gets sprinkled around,
00:48:46all that stuff
00:48:47can be pressure,
00:48:48pressure, pressure.
00:48:49It's hard to trust
00:48:50somebody in this game.
00:48:51It's hard, you know.
00:48:52Once you start
00:48:53bringing in all that money,
00:48:54everybody's got
00:48:55their hand out for it.
00:48:56So it's hard to trust
00:48:57for anyone.
00:48:59Kat reveals
00:49:00his personal feelings
00:49:01about his career
00:49:02in this exclusive clip.
00:49:03I plan to grow old.
00:49:05I plan to die.
00:49:07That's basically
00:49:07where it comes out to.
00:49:10Future plans otherwise
00:49:11are, you know,
00:49:12I've got a lot
00:49:13of future plans.
00:49:14Very few of them
00:49:15have anything to do
00:49:16with the entertainment
00:49:16business just
00:49:18because you don't know.
00:49:20You know,
00:49:21and I know
00:49:22that's a common question
00:49:23just what are
00:49:23your future plans
00:49:24when I'm supposed
00:49:24to say,
00:49:25well, I'm going to
00:49:25do some more movies
00:49:26and I'll be making
00:49:2720 million
00:49:28and, you know,
00:49:30I've got these
00:49:31TV shows.
00:49:31Those aren't
00:49:32my future plans.
00:49:33My future plans
00:49:34are to be 45
00:49:35and working
00:49:37whenever the fuck
00:49:37I want to work.
00:49:38In November 2008,
00:49:40Kat Williams' name
00:49:41flooded the news
00:49:42yet again.
00:49:43That is Kat Williams
00:49:44trying to check
00:49:45into a motel
00:49:46in Sumter.
00:49:47The same Kat Williams
00:49:49who's a world-renowned
00:49:50comedian
00:49:50known for his
00:49:51raw humor.
00:49:52So what was he doing
00:49:53at the Mount Vernon Inn
00:49:55in Sumter
00:49:55at 8.30
00:49:56Friday morning?
00:49:57Wanted to have a room
00:49:59for a couple
00:49:59of nights?
00:50:01Marion Donning
00:50:01had no idea
00:50:02who he was.
00:50:03And when I asked
00:50:04for his ID,
00:50:06he started to look
00:50:07in his pockets
00:50:08and couldn't find
00:50:10his ID.
00:50:11Technology is the reason
00:50:12Kat's in the news
00:50:13so much.
00:50:14Everybody got a camera
00:50:15on their phone
00:50:16or with them
00:50:17so they can film
00:50:19this stuff,
00:50:19download it
00:50:20onto YouTube,
00:50:21then it hits
00:50:22news to news to news.
00:50:23Marion says Williams
00:50:24then started to lose
00:50:25his composure,
00:50:26you can see him
00:50:27squat by the door.
00:50:29I just wondered
00:50:30if he was alright.
00:50:31Marion says the two men
00:50:32left the hotel
00:50:33without checking in.
00:50:35However,
00:50:35his troubles
00:50:36had just begun.
00:50:37The following year,
00:50:39Kat was arrested
00:50:39in Kuwaita County,
00:50:40Georgia,
00:50:41having been charged
00:50:42with burglary.
00:50:42Channel 2 was there
00:50:43tonight as a throng
00:50:44of fans greeted
00:50:45comedian Kat Williams
00:50:46as he walked out
00:50:47of the Kuwaita County
00:50:48jail.
00:50:49Williams is facing
00:50:50burglary charges
00:50:51and tonight he's
00:50:52defending his name.
00:50:53Channel 2's Eric Phillips
00:50:54spoke one-on-one
00:50:55with Williams.
00:50:56He's live in
00:50:57Kuwaita County
00:50:57with what he's
00:50:58saying about the
00:50:59arrest.
00:50:59Eric.
00:51:00John,
00:51:00I met up with
00:51:01Kat Williams
00:51:01after he was
00:51:02released from jail
00:51:03this evening
00:51:03and he told me
00:51:05that he did not
00:51:05resort to stealing
00:51:06when he was homeless
00:51:07and he certainly
00:51:08would not do so
00:51:09as a multi-millionaire.
00:51:10He's broken
00:51:11into a house.
00:51:12He stole some
00:51:14jewelry and coins.
00:51:16We don't want
00:51:17no coins.
00:51:18Black folks
00:51:19don't even collect
00:51:20coins.
00:51:21We want some coins
00:51:22but we don't want
00:51:23no coins like that.
00:51:24And he wears like
00:51:26$30,000 worth of
00:51:27jewelry in the
00:51:28bathtub.
00:51:29Why would he want
00:51:31anybody's jewelry
00:51:32and breaking into
00:51:33a house?
00:51:34You know,
00:51:34from what I know
00:51:35of my friends
00:51:36there's always
00:51:38an explanation.
00:51:39Williams says
00:51:40he did break a
00:51:40pane of glass
00:51:41in the caretaker's
00:51:42home while he was
00:51:42away but it was
00:51:43so he could turn
00:51:44on the lights
00:51:45so that horses
00:51:45on the land
00:51:46would not become
00:51:47frightened by their
00:51:47own reflection
00:51:48in the glass.
00:51:49He says the
00:51:50accusations are bogus.
00:51:51Kat reveals his
00:51:52side of the story
00:51:53in this exclusive
00:51:54interview.
00:51:55I'm saying I
00:51:55have to be the
00:51:56only cat burglar
00:51:57that steals
00:51:58stuff worth
00:51:59less than
00:52:00everything he
00:52:00has.
00:52:02This is their
00:52:03car.
00:52:06This is their
00:52:07house.
00:52:09This is the
00:52:10total of their
00:52:11life.
00:52:13And what they
00:52:14told the police
00:52:15was that I
00:52:16stole a $5
00:52:18cedar jewelry
00:52:20box from them
00:52:21with six
00:52:22collectible coins
00:52:24totaling $100.
00:52:26Uh, I can
00:52:28say that, I
00:52:29mean, I don't
00:52:31think none of
00:52:32this is true and
00:52:32a lot of it I
00:52:33know not to be
00:52:34true.
00:52:34So I think
00:52:35that, you know,
00:52:37um, they
00:52:39twist a lot of
00:52:40stuff, which
00:52:41is, that's what
00:52:41the media does.
00:52:42They twist up
00:52:43everything.
00:52:44Williams resurfaced
00:52:45in the news just a
00:52:46month later, having
00:52:47been arrested for
00:52:47disorderly conduct at
00:52:49a Walmart in
00:52:49Georgia.
00:52:50Police were called
00:52:51to an area of
00:52:52Walmart today after
00:52:53someone reported a
00:52:53disturbance involving
00:52:54comedian Kat
00:52:55Williams.
00:52:56Authorities have
00:52:56been questioning
00:52:57Williams for hours
00:52:58about the
00:52:58incident.
00:52:59We have again
00:52:59another incident
00:53:00today involving
00:53:01Kat Williams and
00:53:03law enforcement
00:53:03today at this
00:53:04parking lot of a
00:53:05Walmart here in
00:53:06Noonan.
00:53:07There are reports
00:53:08of a fight that
00:53:09were involved, that
00:53:10did involve the
00:53:11actor and comedian
00:53:12and he has been
00:53:14questioned by
00:53:15police here in
00:53:16this case, though
00:53:17he has not been
00:53:18charged.
00:53:19Capping it off, in
00:53:20May 2010, news
00:53:22reports announced
00:53:23that Kat was in
00:53:23debt to the IRS to
00:53:24the tune of $284,000.
00:53:27His representatives
00:53:28quickly responded to
00:53:29the press, stating
00:53:30that everything would
00:53:31soon be rectified.
00:53:32This, however, did
00:53:33not stop rumors of a
00:53:34bankrupt Williams.
00:53:35Kat addresses the
00:53:36bankruptcy rumors in
00:53:37his only post-retirement
00:53:39interview.
00:53:40I don't care what
00:53:41lies they are.
00:53:42They said I was
00:53:43bankrupt.
00:53:44The same day they
00:53:45said I was bankrupt,
00:53:46I got a check for
00:53:47his pimping pimping
00:53:48for $1.4 million.
00:53:50I haven't cashed it.
00:53:51I still got it.
00:53:53And I'm trying to
00:53:54figure out how I
00:53:54make it with $3
00:53:55million.
00:53:56It's still a $3,500
00:53:58worth of jewelry in
00:54:00Coeta County, Georgia.
00:54:02I hope that the, uh,
00:54:04I hope all the court
00:54:05stuff's still in
00:54:05stops, though, because
00:54:07it's not good for him.
00:54:08It's bad publicity, and
00:54:12it makes me worried.
00:54:14As his friend, I worry.
00:54:15Even while fighting
00:54:16lawsuits, Kat focused his
00:54:18attention back to his
00:54:19acting career, appearing
00:54:20in films such as the
00:54:22independent drama
00:54:22Lonely Street.
00:54:24Man, my grandmother
00:54:25made this jacket.
00:54:26Get off me.
00:54:26You tell me about
00:54:27his killer.
00:54:28What do you mean?
00:54:29You mean, what do I
00:54:29mean?
00:54:30You asked me to watch
00:54:31the room, and I
00:54:32watched it.
00:54:32Then you asked me to
00:54:33get you the Master
00:54:34King, which I did.
00:54:35And then you went in,
00:54:37and then he's dead.
00:54:38I didn't kill this guy,
00:54:39Roden.
00:54:39I didn't kill him.
00:54:40Did anybody else come in
00:54:41or out of that room?
00:54:41Everybody came in and out
00:54:43of that room.
00:54:43It looked like the
00:54:43goddamn Cinco de Mayo
00:54:45parade.
00:54:45Just people in and out.
00:54:46And in his most recent
00:54:47film, Cats and Dogs,
00:54:49The Revenge of Kitty
00:54:50Galore, Kat voices the
00:54:52role of Seamus, the
00:54:53wisecracking pigeon.
00:54:54If I don't know
00:54:55anything, I tell you,
00:54:56my brain is the size
00:54:56of a grape or a raisin.
00:54:58Either a big raisin
00:54:59or a little grape.
00:55:00Oh, boy.
00:55:01As for his retirement,
00:55:03it's questionable
00:55:03whether Kat will return
00:55:05to the mic or not.
00:55:06His friends offer their
00:55:07thoughts to the situation.
00:55:08Jordan retired three,
00:55:10four times.
00:55:10Magic retired three,
00:55:11four times.
00:55:12Ain't no reason Kat
00:55:13can't retire three or
00:55:14four more times.
00:55:15Come on.
00:55:15He's just too good.
00:55:17Like, there are a lot
00:55:18of bad stand-ups out
00:55:19there.
00:55:20And so it would be
00:55:22nice to have him
00:55:23back up on the
00:55:24microphone.
00:55:25I absolutely think
00:55:26that he will do
00:55:27stand-up again.
00:55:28Don't know that he
00:55:29will go on a tour
00:55:30again.
00:55:31I mean, it happens
00:55:32to the brothers.
00:55:33It ain't gonna happen
00:55:34to me.
00:55:34If I get fame
00:55:35before something like
00:55:36that, I'll be it.
00:55:37But look at Chappelle
00:55:38and look at Martin
00:55:39and look, you know,
00:55:40people, they walk
00:55:41away.
00:55:42Because the pressure
00:55:43gets to be too much
00:55:44and actually,
00:55:47the simple life
00:55:48that you lived
00:55:49before, you yearn
00:55:50for that again.
00:55:51Life is change.
00:55:53And, you know,
00:55:54people say stuff like,
00:55:55don't let the money
00:55:55change you,
00:55:56don't let fame
00:55:57change you.
00:55:57But that's, you know,
00:55:59that's when you're not
00:56:00trying to be changed.
00:56:01I'm trying to be changed
00:56:02by all new circumstances.
00:56:04So, it would be ridiculous
00:56:07for me to get money
00:56:08and fame and not change.
00:56:10Because otherwise,
00:56:11what was the point?
00:56:12If I was gonna stay the same,
00:56:13I could have stayed
00:56:14in the same position.
00:56:15Regardless of his future,
00:56:16Cat has already earned
00:56:17his important place
00:56:18in the legacy of comedy.
00:56:20Years from now,
00:56:21my grandkids,
00:56:22their kids,
00:56:23will be still loving
00:56:25Cat Williams
00:56:25like they did
00:56:26Richard Pryor.
00:56:28You know,
00:56:28Red Fox,
00:56:30Flip Wilson.
00:56:31There's just no body
00:56:33that has caused
00:56:35a stir like this
00:56:38since Eddie Murphy.
00:56:40And,
00:56:42I think he earned
00:56:43every moment of it.
00:56:45It's unclear
00:56:45where Cat will go next,
00:56:47but one thing is certain,
00:56:48he'll do it his way.
00:56:50Should we get to
00:56:51a certain point
00:56:51where we make
00:56:52so much money
00:56:52that we should not
00:56:53complain about anything?
00:56:56I would hope not.
00:56:57Because that's probably
00:56:58when your money stops.
00:57:00Because complaints
00:57:01generally mean
00:57:01that you're not happy
00:57:02with the situation.
00:57:03And the,
00:57:05as a comic at least,
00:57:08money is not
00:57:10conducive to what you do.
00:57:12Like,
00:57:12the laugh comes
00:57:13from the struggle.
00:57:14So,
00:57:14you know,
00:57:15I try to complain
00:57:17as often as possible
00:57:18because I'm never
00:57:19comfortable.
00:57:20And I think
00:57:22you want to stay
00:57:23uncomfortable
00:57:24as long as you can.
00:57:25Whenever he decides
00:57:26to hit the stage again,
00:57:27his fans
00:57:28will be waiting.
00:57:30Hey, Cat,
00:57:30where are you?
00:57:31This right here,
00:57:32nigga,
00:57:32this right here,
00:57:34that's Cat Williams.
00:57:35This shit right here.
00:57:37This shit right here,
00:57:38right here.
00:57:38That dude right there,
00:57:39that dude right there
00:57:41is a funny individual.
00:57:42Look, gorgeous,
00:57:43look right here.
00:57:43Shout out
00:57:44is out here
00:57:45by the masses
00:57:46waiting for you.
00:57:47Pimptown,
00:57:48Pimptown!
00:57:49Cat Williams,
00:57:50I love you!
00:57:50I just want to say,
00:57:52Cat,
00:57:53if you see this,
00:57:53you know I love you
00:57:54very much
00:57:55and keep being you
00:57:56and never let anybody
00:57:59stop you
00:58:00from being you
00:58:01because you
00:58:02are the reason
00:58:03that comedy
00:58:04has changed faces
00:58:06in the last 10 years.
00:58:08And I think
00:58:10that everybody
00:58:11is just mad
00:58:12because they can't
00:58:12keep up with you.
00:58:13I just like him.
00:58:15I think he's
00:58:16the hottest comedian
00:58:17in the door.
00:58:18Yeah,
00:58:18we should have
00:58:19taken care of.
00:58:23I don't know
00:58:24if anything
00:58:25will ever
00:58:26parallel the excitement
00:58:28that we had
00:58:30being on that tour
00:58:31and the places
00:58:33we ate
00:58:34and the things
00:58:35we saw
00:58:36and the places
00:58:36we stayed.
00:58:39It was something
00:58:40I'll never forget
00:58:42and I will love
00:58:44that boy
00:58:45until the day
00:58:46that I go to heaven
00:58:49and I love you
00:58:50Kat.
00:58:54Yep.
00:58:55Thank you man.
00:58:56I appreciate it.
00:58:56Kat Williams,
00:58:57the best cover there is.
00:58:59He was a little set
00:59:00I mess with the rock
00:59:01if you want to come out.
00:59:02And he funny.
00:59:04So we're going
00:59:04to record the show.
00:59:07Kat when he reached back
00:59:09and got me
00:59:10to come out
00:59:11on this tour
00:59:11he showed me
00:59:12love that
00:59:14nothing can break.
00:59:15There's nothing
00:59:15you can do.
00:59:16I don't care
00:59:16what they say
00:59:17about you
00:59:17in the news.
00:59:18I know you.
00:59:19I know your heart.
00:59:20I was there.
00:59:21A hundred cities.
00:59:22I know you.
00:59:23There's nothing
00:59:23you can say
00:59:24to me Kat.
00:59:25My love forever.
00:59:27For always.
00:59:28Always.
00:59:28Whenever you need me
00:59:29holler.
00:59:30You know the number.
00:59:31It ain't changed.
00:59:32Give me a buzz.
00:59:34Friends for life.
00:59:34I love you.
00:59:35I love you Kat.
00:59:36Kat will.
00:59:37Kat will.
00:59:38Kat will.
00:59:39Kat will.
00:59:39Kat will.
00:59:40Kat will.
00:59:41Hey.
00:59:41I'm more like
00:59:41boys when
00:59:42this nugget is
00:59:43funny as my mom
00:59:44but he is short.
01:00:04Kat will.
01:00:21God bless you what you sell.
01:00:22Bye.
01:00:22Bye.
01:00:23Bye.
01:00:24Bye.
01:00:25Bye.
01:00:26Bye.
01:00:28Bye.
01:00:30Bye.
01:00:32Bye.
