00:02There is no such thing as friendship in the world of politics.
00:06Only the settling of old scores.
00:07And sometimes those particular scores run very deep.
00:10That was simply a matter between the state of Iran and Israel.
00:14For 30 long years, we were strictly strategic partners.
00:16Not friends mind you, just partners.
00:18Bound together by nothing but fear.
00:20That fear began in 1948.
00:22Israel had just been formed.
00:25And it was surrounded by enemies.
00:27Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan.
00:30Facing that enciclement, Ben Gurion made a cold calculation.
00:34The neighbors of the Arab states could become partners.
00:37And that partner was indeed found.
00:40Tehran during the 1950s.
00:42The Iran of the Shah.
00:44Modern, western facing and just as deeply wary of Arab nationalism.
00:49That is why the two countries met in secret.
00:51An Israeli officer and an Iranian officer at a table.
00:54Devoid of any emotion.
00:56The first deal on that table was for oil.
01:00According to the Associated Press.
01:0180% of Israel's oil came from Iran.
01:0580%.
01:06And that oil arrived via a pipeline.
01:091968 from Eilat to Ashkelon.
01:12Cutting across Arab territories.
01:14Not just the pipeline.
01:16According to CA documents.
01:17Israeli officers helped create SAWAK.
01:21SAWAK.
01:21A name that became a source of terror in Iran.
01:25There was one man who gave that terror a proper name.
01:28But that man was living far away.
01:29Cast out in lonely exile.
01:31And he was feeling incredibly, deeply and truly furious.
01:33It was exile in Najaf, Iraq.
01:37From 1964.
01:38Ruhollah Khomeini would record cassette tapes.
01:41Every day.
01:42Those tapes were copied and passed from hand to hand.
01:45From the mosque to the bazaar.
01:46Faster than censorship.
01:48The message on those tapes was clear.
01:50This is not a partnership.
01:52Not in any way.
01:53This is nothing but a betrayal.
01:54The soul of Iran was sold to America and Israel.
01:58And they were young men who had studied in the Shah's universities.
02:02They were listening to those very tapes.
02:04And something was changing.
02:05But in those very days, December 1977.
02:08According to the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library.
02:11Carter raised a glass in Tehran.
02:14Iran.
02:15Once considered an island of stability.
02:17That island was engulfed in flames just one year later.
02:21Then came Black Friday.
02:22The army opened fire upon the gathered crowd.
02:24And then on January 16th, 1979.
02:27As reported by the Associated Press.
02:29The Shah finally departed Tehran.
02:31Under the guise of a holiday.
02:34And then came February 1st.
02:36Khomeini's plane landed.
02:38Millions were on the streets.
02:40A journalist asked,
02:41How do you feel?
02:42He replied,
02:43Nothing.
02:4418 long days after that period of nothingness.
02:47The precise moment finally arrived that changed absolutely everything.
02:51It was the 18th of February.
02:54According to Reuters.
02:55Yasar Arafat arrived in Tehran.
02:57He was given the keys to the Israeli embassy.
03:00With those keys, the Israeli flag was lowered.
03:03And another was raised.
03:0430 years of history settled in a single afternoon.
03:08But that end was not the death of a friendship.
03:11It was the end of a cold calculation.
03:13And the birth of a new, very dangerous war.
