An oil tanker has just been hijacked off the coast of Yemen — boarded by armed men — and is currently being steered toward Somali waters as we speak. Yemen's coast guard is tracking it. No group has claimed responsibility. And the crew's fate is unknown.

The vessel is the M/T Eureka — a small oil products tanker, Togo-flagged, owned by a UAE-based shipping company out of Sharjah. According to Yemen's coast guard, unidentified armed men boarded the tanker off the coast of Shabwa province on May 2nd, seized control of the vessel, and began steering it toward the Gulf of Aden — in the direction of Somali waters.

The tanker had departed Fujairah in the UAE about eight days prior and was anchored near Al Mukalla on Yemen's coast just two days before the boarding. Routine stop. Then — gone.

01:51Now, here's why this story is bigger than one tanker.
01:55The Gulf of Aden and waters off Yemen and Somalia have been a maritime security nightmare for months.
02:01Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping have already pushed global freight costs through the roof and forced major rerouting around
02:10the Cape of Good Hope.
02:11Somali piracy, which the world largely considered a solved problem after the early 2010s crackdowns, has been quietly resurging.
02:19And now this, a UAE-linked tanker, hijacked in Yemeni coastal waters, being driven toward Somali waters by unidentified armed
02:29men with no claim of responsibility and a crew whose nationality and numbers haven't even been confirmed publicly yet.
02:37Is this Houthi-linked?
02:39Somali pirates seizing an opportunity amid regional chaos?
02:43A criminal opportunist operation?
02:45Right now, nobody knows.
02:47That uncertainty is itself the story.
02:50The waters around Yemen are already among the most dangerous on Earth right now.
02:55The Strait of Hormuz to the north is still recovering from blockade tensions.
03:00The Red Sea to the west is a Houthi hunting ground.
03:03And now the Gulf of Aden, the exit ramp out of all of it, has a hijacked tanker being steered
03:09toward one of the world's most notorious piracy zones.
03:12For global shipping, for insurance markets, for the crews of every vessel transiting this region, this is another alarm bell
03:20in a corridor that is running out of room for more bad news.
03:24The MT Eureka is out there right now, moving, tracked, but not recovered.
03:30Crew status unknown.
03:32Perpetrators unidentified.
03:33Yemen's Coast Guard is working it.
03:36The world is watching.
